On behalf of the Supreme Lodge, I am also proud to announce that Brother J.C. (Jerome Charles) Dressler of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, has been named the State Fraternalist of the Year for 1992.

His selection is a tribute to the dedication that J.C. has given to our Society and to the community.

Brother Dressler, a member of the SPJST,for 52 years and a member of Lodge No 172, Pasadena, was selected at the January meeting of the Supreme Lodge as the Society's 1992 Fraternalist of the Year.

Let's Hang On to What We've Got Lessons to be Learned?

Sears, Roebuck & Company dropped a bombshell on American consumers last week when company officials announced that the retailer would be shutting 113 "unprofitable" stores and discontinuing its famous catalog.

Arthur Martinez, the Sears executive who initiated the cuts, said that the "new Sears" would be a much smaller, more focused and more profitable enterprise.

That may be sobut in so many ways, it's a sad turn of events. Apart from the fact that 50,000 people will be losing their jobs, we'll also be losing that great big Sears catalog-and along with it, an important part of our American culture.

How important can losing a catalog be? Well, that depends on how sentimental you want to get. At one time, the Sears catalog-next to the Bible-was one of the most important pieces of literature in the American household. At various times it offered everything from groceries and farm equipment to complete home construction kits and tombstones. Something for everyone. Even I can remember, as a child, growing up on the farm, and every Christmas, picking out toy from the Sears wish book. Now those days may be gone forever.

The point is this: The catalog was a faithful friend to generations of American families and will be missed. Why, then, did Sears executives "pull the plug" on the book?

The reason for the dynamic overhaul, according to Wall Street Journal reporter Timothy Schellhardt, was that Sears simply "failed to change with the times."

"Sears often moved too slowly to respond to changing tastes and shopping habits," says Schellhardt. "Sears responded belatedly to changing times.

But those changes weren't enough."

While that may be oversimplifying the reason for Sears' decline, it does, however, address the issue of customer service-an important area of concern for all businesses-including fraternal benefit societies.

As part of their customer service programs, many private and cooperativelyowned businesses routinely conduct surveys to find out how their customers feel about various services offered. Not only does this enable the organization to know how it is doing, it helps disappointed customers get satisfaction.

Would customer surveys have saved 50,000 Sears employees their jobs?

That's a lot to ask from any survey.

However, if the studies had been done twenty years ago, and if the results had been properly interpreted and acted upon before the situation turned from bad to worse-well, who knows?

Is there a moral to this story? More than a moral, there is a reminder:

To grow and prosper, our Society can never afford to rest on its past laurels. In today's world, customer service-or if you like, call it courtesy, innovation and enthusiasm-before and after the sale, must always be a part of our SPJST's total fraternal package. *** Academic Season is Here It's that time of year again, when many of our younger members across the state, are gearing up to compete in the state's University Interscholastic League (U.I.L.) scholastic contests. Indeed, many of our adult members who teach in the Texas public school system, will also be involved as sponsors, coaches and directors in these worthwhile competitions.

Since it was organized in 1909, our state's U.I.L. program has grown into the largest literary and academic competitive program in the nation. A total of 36 different contests encompass many areas of artistic and academic expression, ranging from storytelling and picture memory contests in the lower grade levels to spelling, writing, mathematics, science and theatrical contests at the junior high and senior high levels.

One of the most impressive aspects of U.I.L. competition-be it on the local, district, regional or state level-is the hours of study and practice that our young people put into preparing for these contests. Why do they do it? Speaking as a past competitor, the real attraction is the challenge. The contests provide healthful, character-building experiences that teach lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork and individual responsibility. Participation is its own reward. Participants learn humility in victory and grace in defeat.

Three cheers to all of our young people who have accepted the challenge and will be involved in U.I.L. contests this spring!

*** Upcoming Local Lodge Workshop Already, the article that appeared on the cover of last week's Vestnik is generating some good discussion about the Local Lodge Workshop scheduled Saturday, March 13, at Lodge 177, Academy.

Vice President Gebala, who is coordinating the program, says that this year's workshop is designed to pick up where we left off in 1992. Those of you who attended last year's sessions will recall that quite a few good ideas for maintaining and building membership were generated. As much as anything, this year's challenge will be to update the ideas and then developing some specific action plans for implementing the best ideas. Readers Write Read Any Good Knedlik Recipes Lately?

Dear Editor, Your Vestnik is very informative and enjoyable to read. We look forward to receiving it.

Is there a chance that for those of us looking for good Czech cooking recipes, a column could be made?

What I am looking for is a recipe for "kneblicks." The spelling might not be right but the pronunciation is correct. It's a dumpling made with bread dough.

If there is someone that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

SPJST Queen on Endurance and Perseverance

Dear Members, This past year has been one that I will never forget. Winning a title that has not been won by a District Five Queen for 25 years was an honor. On August 15, 1992, I received the honor of being named SPJST State Queen for the 19931993 year.

This honor has brought with it many responsibilities. I have been given the job of representing the SPJST. This is a big job. I never thought the day would come when I would have such a large responsibility at my age. When I was little, I always dreamed of being State Queen but I never thought it would happen. I had so many doubts about running for Queen. I thought to myself, "What if I mess up my speech, or trip as I walk up on the stage?" I also had doubts about whether or not I could even write a decent speech.

My speech topic, "Endurance and Perseverance," are the two words that I

live by. Be it grades or family problems, I must endure any bad news that I receive. I cannot let the problems-stop me from enjoying life to its fullest. I also must persevere—as I said in my speech, " ... no matter the obstacle."

Nearly three years ago, I lost a very close friend to cancer. She meant the world to me. When we lost her, I felt like life was cruel and unfair. In some way, I even felt like her death was my fault.

Through enduring the pain of her death and realizing that she was taken by the Lord, I went on and began to live life to the fullest once again. I had to persevere to get over her death.

To me, endurance and perseverance are what get people through the toughest times in their lives. It is what gets me through mine. This is not to say that you do not need to use other methods to get through those trying times, but nine times out of ten, if you endure and persevere, you will make it through.

This year, I have had many wonderful experienced. From the West-Fest to the Temple Christmas Parade—every event has been a great one. I would like to thank Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for his warmth and generosity to the whole Royalty Court. Our State Youth Director Joni Lange has been a pure miracle for Paul and myself. She has helped us so much through this year and she is greatly appreciated.

In no way can I forget District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton, who has encouraged me from the very beginning to go as far as I possibly can in life.

She inspired me to run for queen— something I will always be grateful for.

My Youth Leader Barbara Linney also deserves my appreciation. She handles all of the behind the scenes activity for Paul and myself. She has helped me so much during this past year. Thank you!

I would also like to thank everyone in my lodge who has given my Duchess Tamara Williams, their support and love. I would also like to thank you for your support as well. I Lindsey Michalak hope that I can serve the rest of my reign as well as I was able to last year.

Let's pray that 1993 is more prosperous than 1992.

From the President's Office SPJST Presents 1992 Fraternalist of the Year (Continued from Front Cover) Brother Dressler has held the positions of both Vice President and President at Lodge No. 172 since 1982. In addition, he has also held and assisted in various other lodge positions during that time.

In the years that Brother Jerry has served as an officer for Lodge No. 172, his devotion to the duties of his office have been "above and beyond the call of duty." As a retiree, he spends countless hours managing the affairs of the lodge.

He is always ready to assist the various committees and chairpersons—both with suggestions and by participating in their activities.

Brother Dressler has encouraged the lodge to participate in several worthwhile community benefits, including the Kilroy Foundation, The Rose, and other projects organized to support individuals in need. He is one of the founders of the Gulf Coast Czech Festival and a member of many active heritage associations.

Brother Dressler is also active in his community, serving as a Junior Achievement Coordinator at Galena Park High School.

Through Brother Dressler's foresight, many challenges have been overcome in the lodge. Under his leadership, members of Lodge 172 payed off the lodge mortgage through the devotion of many hours of time and labor.

Brother Jerry's parents, Frank and Cecilia Dressler, were also active members of the SPJST. His father served as Secretary-Treasurer of Lodge 50 in El Campo for many years. Brother Frank and Sister Cecilia raised a lovely family of seven girls and four boys in El Campo.

J. C. graduated from high school in El Campo and attended college at South Illinois University in Carmendale, Illinois.

He served in the United States Air Force as a Tech. Sgt. Flight Engineer-Gunner in World War II for five years, from 1940 through 1945, in the European Theatre.

Brother Dressler and his wife Vicki have been married for 50 years. They are the parents of three sons, and one daughter. They are also the proud grandparents of six grandchildren The presentation of the 1992 Fraternalist of the Year award will be made at the Local Lodge Workshop on March 13 at Lodge 177, Academy.

Once again, congratulations to Brother Jerry and the other fraternalists for their outstanding achievements.

SPJST Salutes 100 Percent Families With seven districts and 118 active lodges, the SPJST depends heavily on family participation to prosper and maintain a spirit of fellowship. In appreciation of that support, the Supreme Lodge introduced its "100 Percent SPJST Family" program in September. Through letters to local lodges and articles in the Vestnik, 100 percent families were encouraged to report their 100 percent families to the SPJST Supreme Lodge. To date, that response has been great.

The following is the eleventh listing of 100 Percent SPJST families who have registered their family and will be receiving a certificate acknowledging their contribution to the Society. More names will appear in upcoming issues of the Vestnik.

Majek's and Vrazel's Perform at Star Hall The Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi and the Vrazel Polka Band frm Cemeron, Texas, performed for a capacity crowd at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Sunday, January 10th. In addition to the traditional good Czech music that was played for the festive crowd, there was a food and community aplenty despite the 35-degree temperature outside.

Midway through the musical merrymaking, a special concert was performed by both orchestras, featuring 15 musicians to the delight of the crowd.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Reports on anuary Meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met on Sunday, January 10, 1993 at the Hallettsville Youth Center.

President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Youth Club presented an enjoyable short program. It consisted of a song and a skit called Sports Resolutions. Participating were: Jeremey Kalmus, Tucker and Trevor Scott, Adam and Joshua Siptak, Nicholas and Elizabeth Vahalik.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. Correspondence was also read. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report and FAC Gaye Galetka read a letter from Frank Klinkovsky, State FAC and announced that there would be entertainment at the next meeting.

Elsie Mascheck reported on the bingo held for the residents at Stevens Convalescent Center. Members assisting were: Helen Zak, Leona Miculka, Ida Neubauer, mary Matula, Vicky Zak and Elsie Mascheck.

Youth Leader Annie Vahalik reported on the youth club activities. They have five members and two social members.

District VI Director Matt Vanek was present and he spoke to the members about SPJST activities and benefits. He then installed the following officers that will serve for 1993: President—Annie Vahalik Vice President and FAC—Joe Siptak Corresponding Secretary—Erwin Holy Treasurer—Helen Zabransky Flag Bearer—Adam Siptak Youth Leader—Annie Vahalik Reporter—Patsy Zabransky The members thanked Director Vanek for being with us and installing our officers and invited him to visit with us again.

After the meeting was adjourned, an enjoyable lunch was served. - Winners of door prizes donated by Director Vanek were: Jennifer Hessler, Adam Siptak, Vicky Zak and Annie Vahalik.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 14th at the Youth Center at 2 p.m. Committees will be named and the Audit Committee will report. They Youth club will have a Valentine's Day program and January, February, and March birthday celebrants will be honored. Lunch will be served as usual.

Karel Jong, No. 28, East Bernard Encourages Meeting Attendance Lodge

Dear Members: The February monthly meeting will be held on the first Sunday, the 7th, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street. It is with much hope that there will be a better attendance than at the January monthly meeting. Those members who live in the immediate East Bernard area (5-mile radius) should especially make an extra effort to attend.

Remember, members, our lodge, Lodge Karel Jong, No. 28, will be 95 years old on March 19th.

A fraternal hour luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting.

On January 3rd, the monthly meeting had an appalling attendance. The members present all live further than the fivemile radius of East Bernard. The meeting was very short. Most of the reports were not given and no business was discussed or handled.

The fraternal hour luncheon started early and those present had plenty of time to visit.

Opinions and views placed hereforth are this writer's—his alone—and no one else's: Commentary

With many members as Lodge Karel Jonas has in the East Bernard area, it is very sad that so few attend the meetings. Especially since there are articles in the Vestnik from different persons and/or groups which give the impression that these persons and/or groups are very active in the local lodge, Lodge Karel Jonas. In most cases, this is questionable.

On occasions that this writer has invited members to attend the meetings, he has heard all kind of excuses. Some of these excuses are: "The meetings are too long;" "Who wants to attend a dry old meeting that cannot be understood;" "There are some members who attend and hold office that I do not like. Why don't you chase them out?" (This last one is this writer's favorite).

Here are some answers to all of this unadulterated bull. The meetings are as long as they need to be, depending on reports given and business needing immediate attention. Also, the meetings will always take longer when "The Chair" has to interrupt the one who has the "floor," because "The Chair" has to stop someone who starts their own private conversation. Most meetings can last up to an hour or less. As to our meeting being dry, most items brought forth in a meeting are to enlighten members on insurance policy changes (new ones and their own), operational policy changes that have been received from the Supreme Lodge and those items of a recreational nature that may be sponsored by the Supreme Lodge, Districts or other local lodges. On the local level, items of business are introduced that the membership has a right to deliberate a proper disposition. As to understanding what is going on, all meetings are conducted in the English language (American English) as is taught in schools and is used everyday to communicate in the business world and on T.V. At this point, this writer could introduce several pathetic cases, but for the sake of brevity, will not.

On the comment, "There is nothing to

do," all this writer has to say is, it takes two to tango—unless you are dancing with a broom. To play cards, dominos or any other games, you have to have more than one player, unless you are playing solitaire. Naturally, if one has nothing else to do, one can play "twiddle thumb."

On those persons holding office, the writer does not place anyone in an office, the membership present in the annual meeting vote the office holders in or out.

If someone wishes to get someone out of office, they should attend as many meetings as they can (at least seven [7]), and take part in the democratic process.

Members are members. None can be kept away if they are in good standing, act like proper human beings and are not doing anything wrong according to the "By-Laws" and/or local rules of conduct.

32, Victoria Hosting Valentine's Polka-Waltz Fest Lodge

Make plans to join us for a Valentine's Day special treat—The Vrazel's and Bobby Jones Band will provide lots of good music from 2 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 14th at the Inez Community Center. The snack bar will be open and great desserts will be available.

What better way could you treat your sweetheart. Come on out and join in the fun.

President Franklin Elles presided over our meeting held on January 13th. We discussed our Christmas party and the upcoming Polka-Waltz Fest. We were glad to have Adolf Motal back with us again after being in Houston the past few years.

Our sympathy to Lois Elles on the loss of her mother, Leola Kalich. Mrs. Kalich was also the sister of Ella Arnold.

She was a guest at our Christmas Party this year and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Also, we extend sympathy to Katherine Wokaty on the loss of her sister-inlaw, Larinne Wokaty. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 10th at the REA Building on Ben Jordan at 7:30 p.m. The meeting place is a change so he sure to take note.

40, El Campo-Hillje Reports on anuary Meeting Lodge

El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40 met at 9:30 p.m. after the social games with nine officers and three members attending.

Rita Vanek, our President, led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a silent moment of prayer remembering our deceased and sick members. the minutes of our November and December meetings were approved.

Correspondence received and read was as follows: (1) Name Change: Cheryl Ann Mazach to Cheryl Ann Racka.

(2) New insurance/annuities and terminations/lapses for November and December, 1992.

(3) "Thank you" letter from the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services for our $100 contribution for foster children.

(4) Thank you note from Madeline Shimek, our treasurer, for flowers and cards received during her stay at the hospital following surgery.

Treat your sweetheart to a special Valentine's Day with an afternoon of dancing to the sounds of the Vrazel's and the Bobby Jones Band. Music and dancing will be from 2 until 8 p.m., located on US 59, between Victoria and Edna. the snack bar will be open and desserts will be available.

Admission is $5 per person. Please join us!

Bennie Reck reported that records were audited on December 16th by the Committee consisting of Bennie Reck, Janet Marek and James Bacak. All records were in order. The committee recommended that checks not be signed by two officers prior to being issued.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek gave the Financial Report. A copy is on file, subject to audit.

F.A.C. Dora Lee Kopecky presented the proposed schedule for the year. After completion of the schedule, membership will vote to approve same.

A motion was made by Madeline Shimek and seconded by Dora Lee Kopecky, to continue salary for Mary Ann Karasek, former youth leader, until such a time that a new youth leader is elected. The motion carried.

A motion was made by Madeline Shimek and seconded by Bennie Reck, to accept Brandon Kyle Dornak and Luke Thomas Urhanovsky as new members of our lodge. Motion carried.

New business for our lodge was accepting a bid from the K-C Lease Services, Inc. to provide material and equipment to repair the parking lot at our hall.

Motion by Bennie Reck, seconded by Landis Kopecky. Motion carried. Also, a motion was made by Frankie Vanek and seconded by James Bacak to purchase a new popcorn machine for the kitchen. The motion carried.

The meeting adjourned on motion with Gene Valigura winning the door prize.

Dear Members, Another year has begun and the first month of the year is almost gone.

Everyone is preparing for all of the upcoming activities, including Taroky and Domino tournaments. We hope all of you have had a very successful New Year.

Our January meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Jim Locke.

Flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Sandra Trickett. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alicia Neslony and the SPJST motto was led by Justin Engelke.

The roll call of officers showed that all officers were present.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved. The minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting were also read and approved.

Sister Lucille Cervenka gave the entertainment committee report. Regarding our Christmas party, there were 425 people present for the meal. For our February 21st meeting, members are asked to bring meat casseroles and the committee will provide desserts and coffee. The lodge will furnish drinks. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine will be honored.

New members are Geraldine Jackson, Joyce Chudej, Lisa Chudej, Lesa Marie Sulak, Charles Stanton Bussell, and Larry Dean Bacak. Welcome to Lodge 66!

Sister Mary A. Langlotz gave the fraternal activities report. There were 28 present at our January social game night.

Our next social game night will be on February 8th at 7 p.m. Bring a snack.

Sister Langlotz also reported that the SPJST State Tarok Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 66, Waco at Linden Hall on February 20, 1993.

The Straight Domino Tournament at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall will be on March 6. The State "42" Tournament will be at Lodge 15, Buckholts on March 29.

The Cheer and Condolences report was given by Jeanette Smith. Get well cards were sent to Frank Miller and Mrs. Benito Leos. Sympathy cards were send to Robert and Lucille Cervenka.

The Cheer and Condolences Committee also delivered fruit baskets t the shutins during the holiday season.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported that there were 16 members, one visitor and five adults present at the youth meeting. She reported that the youth donated their Christmas candies to the Cheer and Condolences Committee. Youth Club members will have a Valentine's Day Party on Sunday, February 14. Their "Clean Up the Highway" project will he on April 3.

The youth also gave a donation to the Toys for Tots program, Caritas and the Salvation Army.

Brother George Pauling offered thanks for the monetary gift and presented it to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

The Auditing Committee Chairman reported that all of the books were in good shape.

Brother Keith Gatewood, bookkeeper, gave the quarterly report.

Our door prize winner was Sophie Leshi kar.

The 50/50 game prize was won by Libbie Parma.

Birthday celebrants for the mont of January are Justin Engelke, Libbie Parma and Frank Kofnovec.

The birthday cake was brought by Justin Engelke.

84, Dallas Anticipates a Good Year

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The year of 1992 has ended wit some sad times, but with more pleasant memories, good thoughts and success stories.

Thanks to all who have helped us have a good year.

Now it is time to look ahead to plans, meetings and activities for 1993. Our monthly meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. If you have not been attending the meetings, come join us. Better yet—extend a fraternal invitation to a brother and sister and bring them with you. This is your lodge!

Get a group of your friends and family and come have fun at the dances. On February 6, we will dance to the music of the Henry Rejcek Polka Band. Then, on February 20, we will have our Czech version of Mardi Gras. Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six will be the band for the evening.

Mark your calendars—February 15 and March 28—both are important dates.

February 15 is our initiation for new members. A light meal of cold cuts, finger sandwiches and trimmings will be served at 6:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring desserts. After the meal, the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

For March 28 , plans are underway for Lodge 84's Anniversary meeting, dinner, program, etc. There will be more details later.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Green of Houston. She is the granddaughter of the late John A. and Talita Hilsher and the late Albert and Katherine Green.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James. R. Allbritton, Sr. and the grandson of Mrs. Lois Weise and the late Ernest Roy Allbritton and Marie Rezek and the late Bill Rezek.

The wedding music was played by Reg Brown with Jim Vassalls as trumpeter and soloist Helen Hegwood. For

the wedding, Tracie selected a traditional satin gown covered with lace and pearls.

The elbow length featured a pearl crown enhanced by a pouf of bridal illusion.

The attendants dresses featured a black velvet bodice with an emerald green skirt. The attendants were: Maid of Honor, Traci's sister Kristen Green; Bridesmaids were Amy Hodder, Nicole Durosette, Givenda Wilson, Aleena Gramatikos, Dena McCord, Doris Fabrygel and Debbie Barcak. Che Knight was the flower girl.

Frank Kurz: He's Been Working on the Railroad "Finally, the colonel found another rental and we moved in, only to find that I had been transferred again. My wife and daughters refused to go. They were tired of moving from one school to another. So, I traveled to San FranIn nearly 50 years with Southern cisco alone. It wasn't easy finding a Pacific Railroad, Frank Kurz worked in place to live, but through a friend, I got jobs ranging from apprentice mechanic an apartment on the campus of Stanto research manager, from Ennis. ford University.

"I was sent back to El Paso where I Texas, to around the world.

Frank was born in 1902 and grew up was a master mechanic for the railroad. in Ennis, where his father worked for I can remember one time when 40 cars were derailed outside of Deming and the Southern Pacific.

The mother of the bride wore a purple crepe dress and the mother of the groom wore a blue crepe dress. Both mothers looked so beautiful.

As part of the wedding ceremony, the following verse, written by Traci and Bobby, was read: To our God we thankThee for choosing us as lifetime partners and we askforyourguidance as we start our new life together.

To our parents, thankyou for your love and support throughout our lives and for raising us in a Christian home. Without you,this moment would not have been possible.

To our attendants, thankyou for standing at our side and making our wedding more memorable.

To our friends and relatives, we thankyou for being here and sharing these most precious moments of our lives.

The reception was spectacular with all these fine college students from Texas A&M, the University of Texas, Baylor and other places. A delicious dinner and dance followed afterwards at the SPJST Lodge 88 Chandelier Ballroom. The dinner was served by Staff's Catering Service and the music was furnished by "The Wilderness."

Many of the A&M students were in attendance with Best Man Vernon Hegwood leading the group in the "A&M Yell Practice." To me, and I am sure to many others, it was so impressive. The family history was also on display with pictures on the beautiful table in the foyer.

The Grand March was led by Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt. It was for the young and old—all who were able to participate. After the march, the dance followed and everybody danced their hearts out.

Traci and Bobby have been very prominent in the Lodge 88 Youth Club, therefore it was most interesting to everyone.

Traci and Bobby are both Texas A&M graduates. Bobby works for Fairmount Supply Company in Beaumont and Traci had been employed in Houston but has moved to Beaumont and will find employment there.

The couple's honeymoon trip was a Carribean cruise on the ship "Majesty of the Sea." All of us wish them a long, healthy and happy marriage.

Submitted with love by their aunt, Pearl Hanka P.S.—Traci and Bobby's Showers On Saturday, October 10, a "HoneyDo" shower was given for Traci and Bobby by Joyce Lyons, Diana Sokol, Arlene Marshall and Pearl Hanka. This was a fun shower and Bobby got all the tools for "Honey-Do." On Sunday, October 4, a miscellaneous shower was given for Traci by Clara Broz, Shirley Stonaker, Pat Neskorik, Bernice Wahlberg, Doris Knapeck, Willie. Mendoza, Billie McRae and Annette Scranton.

Traci's mother also informed me that a lingerie shower was given for Traci by the bridesmaids.

Lodge 88, Houston Reports on anuary Meeting President Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:30 after which the colors were presented. All officers were present except Shirley Stonaker who is ill. The minutes were approved, and in the absence of Shirley's report, names of new applicants and deceased members in December were not available. Recalled, however, were the deaths of A. J. Zalesky, John J. Bravenec, Gene Mraz, and Martha Baxter. A. J. Zalesky, John J. Bravenec, and Martha Baxter were all at one time active members of the lodge and contributed greatly to the success we now enjoy. Gene Mraz, many of you will recall, was the son of Bill and Anna Mraz, who owned and operated Bill Mraz's Hall on 34th Street.

The names of all committee members appointed were read and approved.

Josephine Pflughaupt and Doris Knapick were elected by acclamation to the Remunerations Committee.

All 1992 reports were outstanding and the officers and committees did a superb job. One of the most fascinating reports to me is from the Youth. Their activities wear me out just hearing about what they have done. The Youth of today will be the leaders of the SPJST tomorrow, and certainly, we are to encourage them.

And speaking of youth, I don't know how many years young the members of the the Men's Club are, but I can say one thing—they have fun while contributing many hours to the lodge. I also hear Tom Marsh is a real gourmet cook—next time he cooks, I may just pop in for a crumb to check this out.

My good friend, Pearl Hanka, always does such an outstanding job of reporting facts from Lodge 88. It makes it so much easier for me. After reading her letter, there is little that I can add except I do encourage all of you to send your favorite recipes to District Five Secretary Dorothy Pflughaupt for inclusion in the cookbook now being assembled for the benefit of District Five's youth.

For you dancers, don't forget that Lodge 88 is the best place to go and bring your friends. the February 14th celebration is up on us again, so save that day to wine and dine with your friends at Lodge 88. The next meeting is February 8th at 7:30, with refreshments following.

Dear Members and Friends: It looks like it's winter today and summer tomorrow. These rapid changes in the weather—they can't be too good for our bodies, changing from hot to cold in just a few hours. There are many who are sick with colds and the flu, but we have to take whatever is given to us.

Wednesday, February 3, 1993—VESTNIK/9

I would like to correct some errors that appeared in the last letter. Joyce and Frank Tesar, the lodge managers, are not the ones to get married, as they have been married several years. Their son, Eugene, is getting married. Also, Bennie Bartek, is not John. Anyway, errors will always be made if you are doing something.

Our dance on January 24th resulted in a nice and enjoyable evening. The Mynarcik band played well. Our Lodge wants to thank the Polk of A's of Dallas and Arlington that were here. They performed an interesting dance called "The Waterfall." The members formed two lines—with the men on one side and the ladies on the other; then they met in the center of the floor and took a partner.

This process continues and each time the dancer would take a new partner.

It was nice to see our good friends, Leonard and George Ann Wienkon, from Dallas. They love to dance, so when a polka band plays, they go to that hall.

Leo and Helen come here quite often.

We have been very close friends with them for more than 55 years.

Do not forget our Valentine Dance coming up on Saturday, February 13.

The Sulak band will be playing from 8 to 12 p.m. Also, please remember that our next meeting starts at 12:30 p.m. This time there will not be any meal or pastries.

The game nights are doing fine and if any of you care to learn the game of Taroks or Dominos, come and you will not regret the fun that you will have.

Game nights are the first and third Tuesdays of each month and start at 7 p.m. and last till 10 p.m.

I am sure that on Sunday, January 31, we will know who the champions of professional football are. I am also sure that all of you are pulling for the Dallas Cowboys.

An SPJST member's son did not like soap and water. His mother tried to reason with him one day. "Surely, you want to be a clean little boy, don't you?"

"Yes," replied the son, "But can't you just dust me?"

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle Reports on Meeting

The first meeting of the Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle was opened

by Clara Cohen, retiring president.

Some words of wisdom for this new year were read by the secretary:

The minutes of the last meeting were then read and approved as read. The treasurer's report was filed as read.

The Sunshine chairman gave a report on cards sent at Christmas to members unable to attend our meetings. A sympathy card was also sent to Clara Marchioni in the loss of her husband, Claude. On the sick list was Estabelle Hubenak, Mary Cihacek and Art Gillis, who was involved

in a car accident—no injuries resulted.

The meeting was turned over to Flora Koci, who installed the officers for the coming year. President Marie Tesar received a corsage and the gavel to preside over the rest of the meeting.

New Business In new business, Evelyn Spacek suggested that we give a monthly donation for the use of the hail. Jo Prochaska made a motion that we give a donation now and another later. The motion was seconded and approved. President Marie Tesar appointed Jo Prochaska as Hostess chairman. February hostesses will be Liz Howard, Mona Hattendorf, Victor Murphy and Helen Kubala.

Happy Birthday was sung to Eva Dockery, Julia Due'ser, Annie Langer, Lorenda Manasco, Kitty Rippin, Mona Hattendorf and Frank Kovar. Door prizes went to Pauline Morbitzer, Mary Windham and Lorenda Manasco. The meeting adjourned with 38 ladies and seven men present. After a good lunch, games were played until 2 p.m.

No. 133, San Antonio Reports on January Meeting Lodge

Acting President Anthony Trilicek called a special meeting before the regular meeting on January 17 at 2 p.m. to take care of unfinished business from the December meeting. The elected officers for Lodge No. 133 for the year 1993 are Jarolyn Popp—President Wm. Pavliska—Vice President Anthony Trilicek—Secretary-Treasurer Frankie Campbell—Youth Leader Joe Stryk—Flag Bearer At 2:20 p.m., newly elected President Jarolyn Popp called the regular meeting to order. There were 28 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a few moments of silence were observed in memory of the deceased members.

All officers were present, except for Youth Leader Frankie Campbell. The minutes from the December 20, 1992 meeting and the treasury report as of December 31, 1992 were read. A report from the Entertainment Committee was also read.

Sister Viola Kurtz reported the following anniversaries for January: Brother Ernest and Sister Ophelia Popp, 51 years; Brother Joe and Sister Vila Spacek, 49 years; Brother Robert and Sister Jarolyn Popp, 15 years; and Brother Raymond and Sister Dana Schimcek, 3 years.

Brother Emil Matula reported that he and Sister Evelyn visited Brother James Kostelnik, Sister Mary Kostelnik (Rest Home), Brother August Blanar, Sister Marie Blanar (Rest Home), and Brother Jaraslav and Sister Marcella Kleprlik (Both in Rest Home).

Brother Joe Spacek reported that Sister Ann Spacek was still in the hospital and doing fine.

Anthony Rosas reported was accepted as a new member of Lodge No. 133.

The Audit Committee reported that all records were in good order and complimented Secretary-Treasurer Jarolyn Popp for her work.

President Jarolyn Popp reminded the

members of the upcoming Spring District Meeting which Lodge No. 133 will host on April 18, 1993. Further information will appear in the Vestnik at a later date.

There were several very nice compliments from the members regarding the excellent work that the Editor Brian Vanicek is doing. Keep up the good work.

Members attending the meeting and celebrating birthdays in January were: Siter Evelyn Matula, Brother Don Netek, Brother Joe Spacek, Brother Anthony Trilicek and Sister Agnes Rohan.

Attendance prizes winners were Valarie Popp and Viola Fajkus. After the meeting, members socialized and enjoyed a nice lunch (svacina).

Lodge 139, Danbury Reports on January Meeting Danbury Lodge No. 139 welcomed Helen Hegwood as a guest at the January 13 meeting. Sister Helen explained several insurance policies and announced rate changes for some. She expressed her thanks to the lodge sales representatives for their support of the Society.

After the meeting was called to order

by President Lonnie Lostak, Wesley Baldwin led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of recently deceased member Bill Starr.

Minutes of the December meeting and correspondence were read by the secretary, Lorenda Baldwin.

Treasurer Eloise Lostak gave the financial report and reported that 19 members and one guest attended the lodge's Christmas dinner at E. J.'s Restaurant.

Vice President Monte Baldwin announced the scholarship fund goal for the year had been reached. He also handed out forms for the 1993 fraternal reports. A social was held at the conclusion of business.

The One Gift That Always Fits and Never Goes Out of Style: An SPJST Life Insurance Certificate Lodge 155, Austin Reports on Lodge Activities The November 1 meeting was held at the Sponberg home and a scrumptious supper was served. Both Mina and Charles are excellent chefs. A social hour ensued. Attendance was good.

A very nice Christmas dinner and social was held on December 13 at 2 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade on Research Blvd. We were happy to have Adeline and Willie Kohutek as our honored guests. The same officers will serve for 1993 as 1992. Please see photographs.

Donation checks have been sent to Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor, the Salvation Army Shoe Fund, Battered Women and the Austin State School.

District II Director Willie Kohutek gave us an update on current SPJST proceedings and plans for the SPJST centennial in 1997.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Meets in January Dear Readers, On Sunday, January 10, 1993, our Youth Club held its first meeting of 1993 with me as their new youth leader. We have an eager group of boys and I am looking forward to working with them and their parents.

At our adult lodge meeting, the boys led the lodge in the Pledge of Allegiance and then were "Good Sports" in a New Year's program. Elizabeth Vahalik and Joshua Siptak participated in the program, setting the stage with a "Happy New Year" banner, with each boy then offering New Year's resolutions, keying on jargon from their chosen sport.

At our Youth Club meeting, new officers were elected and are as follows: President—Jeremy Kalmus Vice President—Tucker Scott Secretary—Adam Siptak Treasurer—Trevor Scott Historian/Reporter—Nicholas Vahalik We discussed several ideas and projects which included plans for the annual Valentine prize drawing at the February meeting. Tucker will be chairman of the prize drawing and Jeremy is in charge of the exciting games that will be played after the meeting. Nicholas volunteered to work on the Valentine's Day program.

Matt Vanek, our District VI director, visited our meeting and met each of our members. He wished us well and encouraged all of us to participate and share our fraternalism.

I would like to thank Shirley Kalmus and Diane Llanes for being mom assistants at our meeting. With their help, the boys were able to complete their Vestnik projects, address Valentines for the local nursing home, and have lots of fun with games.

187, Round Rock Youth Report on Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, The Lodge No. 187, Round Rock youth meeting was held on January 24, 1993 at 4 p.m. Carrie Holman called the meeting to order and Ronnie Leschber led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 13 youth members and five adults present.

Sharon Holman, our youth leader, reminded us that it was not too early to start our projects for Y.A.D. She would like more members to participate.

We have one member, Donny Leschber, who will be graduating this year. We plan on doing something special for him in April.

On Sunday, February 21,1993, the adult members of Lodge 187 will be having a tip party for all workers. The youth will also be having a fund raiser at that time. All members are asked to bring one or two cakes for a cake walk and also an item for a prize drawing or silent auction.

Our next meeting will be at 1 p.m. on February 21st, before the tip party.

Rok 1972 byl Rokem hudby v Koline. Vgechny aspe gne koncerty dirigoval Josef Novak. Oslavy 100 let trvani Kmochovy hudby vyvrcholily slavnostnim koncertem v Lucerne v Praze. A opet na gi rozdavali radost a dobrou naladu. Po ceVr rok hrala Cast souboru v Krajskem divadle v Koline jako hudebni doprovod hry J. Czivige Kmochova eeska muzika. Hudba natoeila gramofonovou desku se skladbami Franti gka Kmocha.

Kmocha, jeho Hine pochody, v nich2 je zaklad proslulosti Ceske lidove hudby. Spolu se g‘47carskou Mestskou hudbou z Usteru byl nag orchestr cenen nejvyse.
