Class of '93 The Quick Start II program that the SPJST is about to embark upon is a proven method of sales training. We are extremely proud of those who have given us a commitment of both time and money in enrolling in this course.

Special attention should be given to the fact that many of our senior sales representatives have enrolled so they can

be aware of new techniques that are now incorporated in insurance sales.

Supreme Lodge Looking Ahead Making Plans for Tomorrow Although Brother Leonard Mikeska's minutes of the January meeting of the Supreme Lodge will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Vestnik, it is noteworthy to report that directors and officers spent a good part of one of their afternoon sessions discussing the Society's longterm goals, objectives and philosophy.

Supreme Lodge President Leshikar introduced the subject by calling attention to the Society's "Goals and Objectives," which were approved by the Supreme Lodge in July 1990.

This 20-page document, which was appeared in its entirety in the August 29, 1990 issue of the Vestnik, covered a lot of ground and established goals and objectives for the Society's various areas of operation.

Brother Leshikar's request was that Supreme Lodge members revisit the plan and determine how well the various branches were meeting their respective objectives.

This process amounted to a page-bypage review of the document with each officer commenting on his area. While each division-in terms of working to meet their departmental goals-were doing their job, the consensus opinion evolved that "just doing the job," will not be enough to propel our Society into the next century.

As much as anything, according to Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, our Supreme Lodge must establish a clear vision and operating philosophy for the future of our organization.

"We have to be able to paint a really clear picture for the membership of where our organization is going and what we are trying to achieve as a Society," Brother Mikeska said. "We, as leaders, need to address that area."

Vice President Bernie Gebala agreed, adding that in order to accurately define future goals and objectives, "It's important that we find out why people join the SPJST and what they expect to get out of their membership in the Society.

After considerable discussion, officers and directors voted to work together to establish an updated business plan that will be presented and discussed at the March board meeting.

As was stated here last week, our founders did a fine job of laying the groundwork for the SPJST. As a result, our Society does a wonderful job in providing security and social interaction for its members and important charitable services for many of the communities that have SPJST lodges.

By committing themselves to the strategic planning and goal-setting process, our Supreme Lodge is working to ensure these good works continue.

While a plan for the future can never be a "cure-all," it will increase the SPJST's likelihood for success and lessen the likelihood of crisis situations ever developing.

The planning process itself can serve to enhance the performance of our Society in several ways: It can reveal unknown obstacles, it can improve communications, it can identify promising business opportunities and it may force management to work better as a team so that ultimately it should produce a Society that can better serve its members.

Certainly, the future was not the only item on the agenda last week. The Supreme Lodge agenda covered a lengthy agenda of day-to-day management concerns.

The minutes of this meeting, as previously noted, will appear at a later date in the Vestnik.

"Just doing the job" will not be enough to propel our Society into the next century.

After reviewing the long list of names, it is clear that a good many of our SPJST sales representatives have put a premium on the value of continuing education and are ready and willing to do a better job for our Society.

*** Spread the Word Just as the SPJST has urged continuing education and professionalism for its sales force in order to achieve financial goals, so too we must inform and train those handling communications and public relations for our Society. It is important that we effectively communicate the benefits of membership in the SPJST to our members and prospective members.

One way to approach the subject might be through a series of district communication workshops or perhaps a special public relations segment as part of our annual officer's workshop. It's just an idea, but at least this opens the floor for discussion.

With space and time in most news mediums at a premium, getting a piece of it requires a strong story. A good communicator recognizes what will be interesting to the media and to the public. Learning how to do that takes practice. A good place to start is by being an active contributor to the pages of the Vestnik.

Spreading the word about the SPJST is not the hallowed ground of your local lodge reporter or Vestnik editor. Any memberif he or she truly desires-can help spread the message of fraternalism and of the many benefits our Society has to offer.

From the President's Office State FAC Summarizes 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive The drive has ended and the results are in, surpassing even our highest expectations. Congratulations to everyone for your support and for your donations.

The officers, directors and members of the SPJST Society say "Thank you."

About three weeks ago, we made a commitment in the Vestnik that we would present some gifts to the donors whose contributions would enable the scholarship fun to reach the original $8,000 goal and also the $9,000 and $10,000 levels.

They are as follows: Joe and Mary Kozel from Fort Worth were the members whose contribution took us to the $8,000 goal. A gift from Lodge 88, Houston enabled us to hit $9,000; and thanks to a gift from Peggy Brinkman of Austin, we reached the $10,000 mark. These two individuals

and Lodge 88 will each receive a set of SPJST dominoes.

As we have said, our original goal was to raise $8,000. You good-natured members were so willing to help our young people achieve a higher education that we greatly exceeded that amount, collecting a total of $10,742.45—enough for 21 $500 scholarships.

The pennies drive has ended but be reminded that SPJST has an ongoing Memorial Scholarship Fund that you may contribute to in memory of your loved ones.

Bennie Engelke, above, and wife Darlene. of Lodge 66, Waco brought in a box of money to donate to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. The box, which weighed 37-pounds contained 107 rolls of pennies in addition to several other rolls of coins and bills. This collection reflects a three-month combined effort of all the members of Lodge 66 collecting at their meetings and other activities, including their lodge Christmas party. On top of the money collected, Lodge 66 also made a contribution of $500 to the fund. Thank you to all Lodge 66 members for your great effort—and to John Engelke, son of Bennie and Darlene, for rolling all the coins!

From the Secretary-Treasurer Update on Supreme Lodge Minutes The minutes of the October 5-6 regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge were approved in the January Board meeting as presented with any corrections. There was one correction in the minutes of the December 18, 1992 special meeting of the Supreme Lodge. The first sentence under "ANNUITIES" read: Vice President Gebala presented for consideration a new proposed annuity contract with a guaranteed rate of 3 percent." That sentence was corrected to read: "Vice President Gebala presented for consideration a new proposed annuity contract, as requested by the Board, with a guaranteed rate of 3 percent."

I also call your attention to a new policy set by the Supreme Lodge concerning

printing of the minutes in the Vestnik.

The policy set by the Board in the January meeting is that the Supreme Lodge minutes be published in the Vestnik after approval by the Board. The Board now meets every two months, so this will only be a relatively short delay. Since the new Board policy does not appear to be in conflict with the By-Laws, I will abide by the new policy.

Czech Classes Offered Czech Study Schedule Lodge 88, Houston Ahoj, all lovers of Czech study! Our 23rd course of study at Lodge Pokrok, Houston has planned the following schedule of meetings for 1993: Jan. 18, 25 Feb. 1, 15, 22 March 1, 15, 22, 29 April 5 Classes meet during the hours of 7:30 9:30 p.m. on Mondays.

We are proud of the intense interest shown by the students. In fact, the number

of registered participants has never been less than 39, with as many as 59 attending.

During the past term, which ended December 7, 1992, 11 visitors from Czechoslovakia met with us and were amazed at the genuine interest of the students.

Should you be interested in joining our group, feel free to attend our meetings.

Czech Class in Alief Ready to Start in February

Another

Alief Evening School under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District) is again going to offer a basic conversational Czech course at the beginning of February 1993 at Hastings High School. Its location is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief —Clodine on the North, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in southwestern Houston.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 1, Fayetteville Reports on December Meeting and Party Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 met on December 13, 1992 for their quarterly meeting and Christmas Party.

The minutes from our previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given and approved.

The bar, kitchen, and entertainment reports were also given and approved.

We were sorry to hear that one of our members, Johnny Vybiral, had passed away.

On our sick list, Leslie Sakowitz had been in the hospital but was able to come home on Saturday.

We are very proud to have been chosen to host the State "42" Tournament on March 27, 1993.

We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Joe Zajicek for hosting a barbecue dinner to welcome our new members. We would also like to thank Willie Kohutek for furnishing the crowd with refreshments.

Lodge 29, Taylor Reports on Meeting The monthly meting of the Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 was called to order

by President Melvin Steger. All members present stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll call and correspondence was read. The treasurer's report and minutes were approved from the December meeting.

The Property Committee reported that our lodge will host a Super Bowl Party and urges all members to come out and have a fun time with us.

There was a discussion about new activities for the upcoming May Fete.

We are open for any new ideas.

We also discussed this year's New Year's Eve Dance and talked of hiring a different band.

A work day has been set for January 23rd at 8:30. Even though its a "work day," we have lots of fun. We need your help.

The Senior Citizens gave a brief report and there was no old business.

Under new business, we discussed taking part in the snake races at the Annual Rattlesnake Show.

New members accepted are: Hubert E. Dubec and Clayton Pelzel.

Our hall needs two new thermostats and we are looking for someone to donate the funds to purchase them.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, February 14th at 4 p.m. A covered dish supper will follow.

Lodge 72, Cameron members were invited and welcomed to Lodge 15, Buckholts on January 10. Brother Joe Zajicek generously donated a barbecue meal for all members attending the first meeting of 1993; drinks were furnished by District II Director Willie E. Kohutek. Approximately 20 members of the recently disbanded Cameron lodge attended and are encouraged to attend future lodge meetings.

We had a splendid occasion at Lodge 88 on Sunday, November 29, 1992, when Anton and Delores Fabrygel celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Anton and Dorothy are two young and worthy people, as Anton sings in the Lodge 88 Choral Group and Dorothy has joined our Social Night Committee. They are very dependable which means so very much.

The lodge was beautifully decorated and Dorothy wanted her Aunt Lillie Spies mentioned as she always helps when help is needed. Also, she mentioned that Lillie's daughter, Aggie and her husband, Joe Foster, from London were there and Aggie

Mr. and Mrs. Anton Fabrygel was in their wedding party. In fact, all the wedding party of 25 years ago were there except Dorothy's brother who is deceased.

Agnes McCloskey decorated the tables and Verda Brown, her godmother, made the cake.

The Fabrygels were blessed with two beautiful girls, Doris and Kimberly.

The Central Texas Sounds immediately played and the show was on the road.

Everybody danced until 5 p.m. when Mikeska's served a most delicious dinner—barbecued beef, chicken and sausage.

The Grand March was led by John Konarek and all those who participated had a "blast."

We had a wonderful time and everyone looks forward to the 50th anniversary. I do hope you have many more happy and healthy years.

The Fabrygels own a farm near Hallettsville and have a beautiful garden most of the time.

I had a real interesting conversation with Viola Cox. She told me that on December 22, 1992, their son, Donnie and his wife, Jina, had twins—a boy and a girl.

They both weighed about the same. The boy, Connor Christian Cox weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and the girl, Courtney Noel Cox weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

(The little miss outweighed the brother.)

The Coxes also have two other children, Cayla and Cody, who greeted the new arrivals when they got home from the hospital. Don't you know that was a joyous and Merry Christmas for that family!

Viola and Harlie have six grandchildren now.

Personal comment: Donnie was one of our busy youth; a very good boy. When the boys got a little "rambunctious," my husband, Ernie, always said,"They'll all turn out to be good boys," —and they did.

The "boys" I am referring to are: Freddie Sembera, Lyn Lesak, Bruce Lindemann, Joe Marshall and Jimmie Vornsand.

I know all of our members at Lodge 88 wish the Cox family the best of luck with their precious babies.

Finally, congratulations to Adam Marshall, son of Joe and Pam Marshall.

He recently made us all so happy and proud of him. Adam, who is in the fourth grade, won the Oak Creek Elementary School Spelling Bee, competing against 19 other fourth and fifth grade students. He correctly spelled "proclivity" and "pebbled," to cinch the championship. On January 26, Adam will compete against the winners from other elementary and middle schools in the Spring Independent School District.

Al and Arlene Marshall are the grandparents and Pearl Hanka is the greatgrandmother.

88, Houston Contributes $685,000 to Needy

Yes, it's true—sounds unbelievable doesn't it?

This is a very generous contribution from lodge members, sister lodge members, fraternal organizations and various friends.

How could so much money be involved when there hasn't been at least one greenback that has changed hands?

Well, the answer is very simple—if you only ask Brother Alexander, your Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC).

He initiated a program in 1986 to assist the unfortunate and needy that proved to be most successful without realizing at the time that it could pyramid into such a huge benefit for the indigent.

Brother Alexander collects and distributes used eyeglasses to the Lighthouse Houston.

They, in turn, are sent to the Telephone Eye Bank of Houston where they are tested, graded and also are sent to the "Eyes for the Needy" in New Jersey.

These repaired eyeglasses are redistributed both locally and abroad.

In return for these eyeglasses, the Lighthouse receives "Eye Cards" which are provided to local indigent individuals to assist them in obtaining glasses at greatly reduced costs, or at no cost.

To date, Brother Alexander has collected 3,428 pairs of glasses.

Based on an approximate cost of $200 for a new pair, it is estimated that Lodge No. 88 has contributed $685,600 to those unable to buy new glasses.

Won't you also help other see better by turning in your old glasses to Brother Alexander?

This eventually could become a statewide project at each SPJST lodge by collecting used glasses from the membership and delivering them to Brother Frank Klinkovsky, State FAC, whenever a lodge member visits the Home Office.

88, Houston Entertainment Committee Report

The year of 1992 was a great one for the Entertainment Committee of our lodge. We ended the year with a beautiful New Year's Eve dance with John Sullivan playing. During the evening, a proclamation from Bob Lanier, Mayor of Houston, declaring Thursday, December 31, 1992 as John Sullivan Day in Houston was brought in and read by Ray Donely. Mr. Sullivan, a native Houstonian and pioneer of big band music was recognized for his efforts to preserve and advance music from the Big Band Era. Another special event on this evening took place at 12:30. Judge Shearn Smith was sworn in for the upcoming year by his brother, Judge Jack Smith, on the stage of the Chandelier Ballroom. We were honored to have this interesting ceremony take place in our lodge.

Our committee is looking forward to another good year in 1993. Members of this committee are: Viola Cox, Chairman Harley Cox, Vice Chairman Bennie Kocich, Alt. Vice Chairman Gladys Smallwood, Alt. 92, Fort Worth Reports on Recent Activities

Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: We are starting a new year. Let's hope that with each new year we try to make this world a better place. God gave us a good world but many people have not tried to better it—look at the wars, for instance, going on in foreign countries.

The trouble is Greed has taken over.

In the past years, we have lost mothers, fathers, sisters,brothers and other relatives, but we must keep going forward. As the newborn babies come into the world, the older ones go to our Creator. We are born to die. We start dying the day we are born—so that is why we should do good while on this earth. As our past President John Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your coun-

try. So, let's all try to do better for our country and for our fellow man.

This year has not started off very well as we have had a number of illnesses to report. Several of our members have had heart surgery: Brother Joe Kozel, a double bypass and Joe Botik, five bypasses. Brother James Powolny suffered a broken pelvis. Sister Gladys Powolny had blood clots in both legs.

John Bartek, who is in the rest home, was sick but is better now; Vlasta Dolkos, also in a nursing home, is about the same. Sister Elsie Davenport is reportedly not doing very well but is going in for tests now. Justine Chaloupka also underwent several tests lately.

Joy Paprskar seems to be improving some. Mary Cichacek broke her leg.

Esta Belle Hubenak is in the hospital in Granbury with a low blood count. And Helen Kubala has those dizzy spells.

We extend a speedy recovery to all the ones that are ill.

Our members that went to play Taroks at Lodge 47, Seaton did well.

Jerry Brezina won first place and Albert Kubala came in around seventh.

Albert Kubala gave the FAC report as Helen was not feeling well. He said that the game nights are doing fine and that there will be a domino contest soon and everyone is welcome to attend. He stated that the young children should learn to play Taroks and have tournaments just like the adults.

I do enjoy being president of Lodge No. 92 again after several years of not serving. All officers of the lodge are very good and are always trying to better the lodge. Members are always thinking up ideas to make the lodge interesting.

The meal prepared by Brother and Sister Al Kercho was very tasty as were the pastries contributed by the members.

As our lodge managers will be getting married on February, which is our regular meeting date, the members have voted to start the meeting at 12:30 p.m. so Joyce and Frankie can be ready at the wedding. However, there will not be any food at this meeting as most will be attending the wedding after the meeting.

The next dance will be on January 24th with music by the Minarcik Band, from 3 until 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.

So, until next time, good health to each of you and happiness through all the year.

An SPJST member's wife lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy who returned it to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "That's funny.

When I lost my bag, there was a $10 bill in it, now there are ten $1 bills in it."

"That's right," the boy quickly replied.

"The last time I found a lady's purse, she did not have change for the reward."

133, San Antonio Enjoys Christmas Luncheon Lodge

The members of Lodge 133 enjoyed a Christmas luncheon on December 20, 1992. Ham was provided by the lodge and members brought various casseroles and desserts.

After a short meeting in reference to the rules and regulations of 133, Presi-

dent Anthony Trilicek called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held for all deceased members, especially John Giambernardi, who passed away on December 3, 1992. The roll call of officers showed all present except Flag Bearer Joe Stryk.

Sister Viola Kurtz congratulated Otto and Jane Hurta who celebrated a December wedding anniversary. It was reported that Sister Gloria Sells was suffering from cancer. Sister Ann Spacek had her leg amputated. Sister Mary Kostelnik was not doing well. Christmas wishes were extended from Mr. and Mrs. Kleprlik by the President and a card from them was read by the secretary.

Members were encouraged to participate in the Scholarship Drive. $50 was collected from the members. That was matched with $50 from the lodge. Members were asked to complete the 100 percent Family Membership Form and the Fraternal Activities forms.

Brother Trilicek appointed Joe Spacek and Mary Popp to the auditing committee. Viola Kurtz was appointed

by Vice President Bill Pavliska.

Brother Anthony Trilicek was presented a plaque by Brother Dominic Netek to thank him for the seven years he devoted to lodge 133 as President.

Brother Trilicek thanked the members and thanked his wife, Alma, for her help in his work. Vice President Bill Pavliska then presented Brother Trilicek with a certificate recognizing him as the lodge's 1992 Fraternalist of the Year. He also presented Brother Trilicek a pen and pencil set from the membership.

President Trilicek then installed Bill Pavliska as vice president, Jarolyn Popp as secretary treasurer and Frankie Campbell as youth leader.

Members celebrating December birthdays included Viola Kurtz, Mary Popp, Emil Rohan, Grace Rohan, Opie Popp, Shannon Zigmond and guest Karen Popp.

Attendance prizes were won by Sophie Hull, First; Agnes Rohan, Second; and Ernest Popp, Third. Other attendance prizes were given to MAry Popp, Lucille Dlugosh, Emilie Newmann, Betty Bienk, Doris Moczygemba and Sandra Heath.

Split the Pot was shared by Doris Moczygemba, Valerie Popp and Ernest Popp.

Members then enjoyed refreshments and visiting with one another.

133, San Antonio Extends Condolences Lodge

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 133, San Antonio, wish to extend to the family of John Giambernardi, our sincere condolences. Mr. Giambernardi passed away Thursday, December 3, 1992, in a local hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Brother Giambernardi was born September 26, 1948. He was 44 years of age at his death. He is survived by his mother, Ursula Giambernardi Bartram; one aunt, Leona Giambernardi and numerous nephews and nieces.

On January 6, we held our monthly meeting and the election of officers for 1993. Prior to the meeting, we had a covered dish supper with lots of good good. Thank you all, for the food you brought.

President Jerry Dressler called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m., opening with the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by a moment of silent prayer for our deceased brothers and sisters.

We were sorry to report the death of one of our lodge brothers, Travis (Jerry) Jaroszewski, Sr. He has served as an officer of the lodge and also as a youth leader. We express our sympathy to his family and loved ones.

The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved as correct. The financial report was read and all committees gave their reports. Also, it was reported that the New Year's Eve dance was a sell-out with 884 tickets sold.

Several members were reported on the sick list. Brother Joe Machann was reported sick and in the hospital. Sister Bessie Findley was also in the hospital for surgery as was Brother Joe Krenek.

Sister Vlasta Machann was also reported on the sick list. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

Wishes for good health were also extended to Brother Raymond Skrabanek that he might return to our lodge meetings. We miss you, Brother Raymond.

President Dressler then called on Brother Louis Hanus, District V Director, to give us a report on what is happening in the SPJST. We're always glad to have Brother Hanus and listen to his reports.

Following all of the reports and the completion of all the business, President Dressler called our attention to the January 27th meeting which will be at 7:30 p.m.

The next order of business was the election of officers for 1993. The results of the election are as follows: Tennie Walla—President Robert Mayfield—First Vice President Alvin J. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor Hosts Christmas Party The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 held their Christmas Party in December. Mr. Woody Richards, administrator, welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming, then emceed the program.

Rev Atkins Noble from the First United Methodist Church gave the Christmas devotion. Then Milton Bloomquist sang a couple of Christmas songs.

This was followed by a performance by the Country Cousins Band, under the direction of Mrs. Phillis Carlow. They played "Here Comes Santa Claus" as Santa gave out the gifts from under the Christmas tree.

Refreshments were served by Demetria Shiller, Lois Gainer, Barbara Barnes, Catherine Holubec, Allison West, Sadie Blaha and Shirley Holubec, F.F.S. The 10th Street Methodist Circle 4 ladies and our kitchen baked all those delicious cookies that were served to the residents with punch. Mrs. Pauline Kovar (AD) wishes to thank all the people and organizations who made our Christmas blessed and a happy one.

On Monday afternoon, December 14, Rev. Jensen and the Hope Lutheran Church Women conducted services.

They also brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

On Wednesday morning, December 16, the kindergarten children of Needville came carolling.

On Thursday afternoon, December 17, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinett with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought cookies for the residents. In the evening, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes came carolling and gave gifts.

Celebrating birthdays during the

month of December were residents: Joan Spezia, Lupe Arechiga, Emma L. Tielke and Ethel Corso; and staff: Mary Trevino, Linda Donald, Joylen Guillory and Sandra Donohue.

The birthday party was held Friday afternoon, December 18 and included singing "Happy Birthday" and listening to music on tape. The Unique Shop provided the corsages. St. Michael's Altar Society provided the cake.

Volunteer Mildred Novak helped serve the cake, ice cream, punch and coffee. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the afternoon. In the evening, Cub Scot

Troop No. 129 came carolling and gave gifts.

On Saturday afternoon, December 19, SPJST Lodge 88 from Houston provided singing in Czech and English and brought gifts. Refreshments were served.

On Monday afternoon, December 21, Ed Pisklak provided music on his accordion.

On Wednesday morning, December 23, Brownie Troops No. 185 and No. 533 came carolling and gave gifts. In the evening, the Assembly of God Choir came carolling.

Everyone enjoyed a joyous Christmas.

On Wednesday afternoon, December 30, Rev. Kuebler with the Immanuel United Church of Christ conducted services. This was also a special day for Emma L. Tielke because it was her 100th birthday.

The residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of December.

Thanks to all denominations of churches and to the volunteers that do services in the home for the residents.

McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Meeting Set The McLennan-Hill Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society has scheduled a meeting for Sunday, January 24th at 2 p.m. at the West Community Center in West, Texas.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge sister, ANNIE 0. JANOUSEK who passed away on December 2, 1992 at the age of 79.

Survivors include, husband, Otto Janousek of Dallas; son James Janousek of Los Angeles, Calif., and three grandchildren, Joanna Janousek of Lincoln, Neb., Jim Janousek of Omaha, Neb, and Dennis Janousek of Columbus, Neb. Rosary was recited at SparkmanCrane Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. John T. Gulczynski as celebrant. Expression of Sympathy

We. the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, SHIRLEY HEJL HORTON, who died December 21, 1992 in a Longview hospital.

Sister Horton was born on May 16, 1948 in Snook, Texas, the daughter of Henry, Jr. and Annie Micha Hejl. She had lived in Longview for the past six years, after moving there from Bryan, Texas. She worked as an office manager for a finance company—the same company that she had worked at for 16 years in the Bryan, Conroe and Longview offices.

Sister Horton graduated from Snook High School in 1966, and attended Durham Business College in Austin.

She was a member of the Brethren Church in Snook and of SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor.

She is survived by her parents, Henry and Annie Hejl of College Station, Texas; one daughter, Cynthia Ann Horton of Longview; two brothers, Monroe Hejl and his wife, Audrey, of Snook; Daniel Hejl and his wife, Gladys, of Caldwell; two sisters, Joyce and her husband, Rev. William 0. Walker, of Dalton, Georgia and Betty McBride of Corpus Christi and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held December 23, 1992 at the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell. The Rev. John R. Gantt, Jr. of the Hope Evangelical Free Church officiated. Internment followed in the New Tabor Cemetery.

May our lodge sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

We, the members and officers of SPJST Lodge 160, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed sister, EARLYNE EVELYN SMITH, who passed away on Thursday, December 17, 1992 in West Coke County Nursing Home after a lengthy bout with cancer.

Services• were held on December 21, 1992 at 10 a.m. in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Janice Petty, pastor of Water Valley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Earlyne was born August 1, 1929 in Thrall, Texas. She married Dee W. Smith on Feb 21, 1948 in Wall. He preceded her in death on August 22, 1988.

She was a LVN at San Angelo State School until her retirement from nursing in 1990. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Water Valley United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, David Glenn Smith of San Angelo; four sisters, Lillian Kotrla, also of San Angelo, Ruby McMinn of Slaton, Bessie Puryear of Tucson, Ariz., and Virginia Fillip of San Angelo; and two brothers, Roy Shiller of Miles, and Frank Shiller of San Angelo.

Pallbearers were Jack Smith, Stuart Shiller, Clifford Shiller and Irvin Escue.

Letters Lodge 17, New Tabor Welcomes Three to Youth Club The Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club would like to introduce its three newest members. They are Adam Hoskins, Patrick Wayne Mantey and Ricky Dale Mantey, Jr. Adam, age 16, is a tenth grader at Pflugerville High School and has a strong interest in soccer. Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Reports on Activities Dear Members, The January 6 meeting of Lodge 88 Youth club was called to order at 7:15 by President Paul Pflughaupt. Amanda Havemann lead us in Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. We then stood for a moment of silent prayer for the peace and good of members. The register was read and there were 32 members, 8 adults, and no guests. We were then introduced to three new members. They were Karen Bender, Kristen Bender, and Krystle Bender. We welcomed them with open arms.

The minutes from the last meeting

were approved as read. We received five letters of correspondence and Treasurer Melissa Havemann then gave her end of the year report.

Our DYC Marie Stayton then gave her report. She gave us the final details of the Royal Reception in honor of the State Royalty. She also informed us about camp.

Once Mrs. Stayton was done with her report, our Youth Leader Barbara Linney told us about how well we did this past year in our fund raisers. She also gave us dates of the upcoming year ahead.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cy Pavliska.

We were honored to have Mr. Bob Bayer, our district director come speak to us about bringing new members into our club. We were encouraged to grow.

142, Houston Youth Club Plans Trip to Space Center Lodge

The Youth Club of Lodge 142, Houston, held their monthly meeting on Thursday, January 7, 1993 at the lodge.

Our first topic of discussion was going to the new Space Center at NASA with Lodge 172 in Pasadena. The Center is new and seems like it will be very educational.

Also we had discussed going to the Livestock Show and Rodeo this year.

We are hoping to get tickets for Brooks and Dunn.

We will be having a raffle and cake sale at our next lodge meeting, so all were asked to bring items for this.

The meeting adjourned and we all went out for pizza.

Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
