In July of this year, the SPJST will observe its 96th birthday. What special celebrations, fraternal programs or membership promotions are we planning to do that will make this a memorable birthday? Or, have we gotten to the point-like some individuals-who once they reach a certain age, regard every new year is "just another year"?

Our founders did their share for the Society when they established their far-reaching goals and objectives nearly a century ago.

We can do the same thing today.

To ensure a bright future for the SPJST, it will take careful long-range planning and teamwork. Moreover, it will take active members with new ideas and the commitment to see them through.

This writer truly cherishes the input of those members who write and call from time to time, to discuss the challenges of working to maintain a dynamic Society. The question was raised again this past week as to what can be done to make lodge meetings more enjoyable.

One of the most common complaints concerning most meetings in general is that they take too much time and yield too little, in terms of results.

Another common problem-and one that appears to be quite universal-is that in the course of discussion, people sometimes have a tendency to get off on side issues that have no relevancy to the main problem. Even the best talkers can't hold the attention of all members at all times.

Unless there is some kind of preliminary planning or agenda establishedand a time limit set, meetings can seem to go on forever.

By their very nature, lodge meetings can serve as a tremendous source of new ideas from all people in attendance. If your lodge has what you believe is a winning formula for conducting effective business meetings, please drop a line or call.

It will take active members with new ideas and the committment to see them through.

*** Where Do We Go From Here?

With the new year come new opportunities. To identify them, we might begin by addressing two basic questions: First, how can the Society better serve its membership? And second, how can we do a better job as a fraternal benefit society?

The sale of insurance and financial products supports fraternalism and the fraternalism leads to the sale of financial products. An effective relationship requires balance. We must continue to avoid a primarily commercial emphasis just as we must avoid a primarily social, cultural and entertainment type of emphasis. Imbalance could eventually lead to the decline in the SPJST's effectiveness and quite possibly, the loss of our tax exemption.

One thing we know for sure is that in 1993, the Treasury Department and the Ways and Means Committee in Washington, D.C. will continue to take a hard look at all fraternal benefit societies.

This issue of "tax exemption" could be something of a blessing in disguise for our Society. In a way, it dictates that the SPJST-and indeed, all fraternal benefit societies-re-examine their principles and purposes.

As we outlined last week, there continues to be a critical need for fraternals in the future. The challenge we have as members of the SPJST, is to convince others of that need in the context of changing national priorities. SPJST is up to that challenge and we can meet it, but we must have credible, understandable statistics to support the good works that our fraternal is involved in. Your timely completion and return of your fraternal activity reports will help our Society tell its story.

In order to prosper, the SPJST must continue to the grow. Indeed, from a financial standpoint, our Society is

The spirit of brotherhood and cooperation between nations is a fundamental need in our world today.

The peace, security and welfare of the world depends upon the extent to which its principles, based upon equality of man, is recognized and governments are willing to practice it in their dealings between each other.

On page nine of this issue is an essay

by Brother Martin Valko, an 18-year old exchange student from the Slovakian region of the former state of Czechoslovakia. Through his words, may we reminded of the great value of freedom.

SPJST Supports Czech Language Program at University of Texas District II Director Willie Kohutek presents check for $1,000 to Hana Pichova, assistant professor of Czech at the University of Texas at Austin. The Czech language program has been a mainstay of the Department of Slavic Languages at UT since 1914.

ti Texas Univers] Sends Letter of Appreciation Dear SPJST Members, wanted to thank you again for your generous gift of $1,000. 1 ordered several video tapes of Czech movies with English subtitles. Some of the titles are "All My Good Countrymen" (the setting is a Moravian village following the year 1948 and the problems that the farmers had to deal with due to political changes), "Shop on Mainstream," "Dita Saxova," "Oratorio for Prague," "Loves of a Blond," and others.

These will he a great help in my second-year language class as well as my literature and culture class during the spring semester. The videos will be located in the library here at UT for interested parties to check out. I believe that the Czech community may he interested in some of these videos.

Please contact me if you have any questions concerning these. Next semester I also invited a guest speaker, Clint Machann, to UT to give a lecture (in my literature course) on the heritage of Texas Czechs. This lecture will be directed to the students in the class but will he open to the public.

I had an exciting semester meeting all the Czech speakers (Sefcik, Ambassador Zantovsky, and Skvorecky) as well as with our first Czech chair appointee, I. Hajek. My students had an opportunity to hear interesting lectures and I believe that this only strengthened their interest in Czech studies. The Czech club has been quite active this year under the guidance of an enthusiastic president, Steve Johnston (I am including his letter to you).

Czech Club Reports on Fall Activities Dear SPJST Members, I am pleased to write to you and bring you up to date on the fall semester activities of the U.T. Czech Club.

This past semester, the Czech Club has henefitted from increased interest among students in Czech culture and language. As a result, the Czech Club has been able to successfully sponsor

several events that have been both interesting and useful to students interested in learning more about Czech culture, or wanting to practice and improve their Czech language skills.

One activity that has been very successful this semester has been the weekly viewing of Czech films. Students gathered every Thursday evening in the Slavic Department's video room to view a variety of Czech films. The films provide an opportunity to increase listening comprehension as well as stimulate conversations related to the themes of the films. The attendance for the films ranged from five to fifteen students.

In October, we sponsored a Czech dinner. Czech Club members were each responsible for bringing a Czech dish to pass. This event was very successful with 15 people in attendance.

In November, the Czech Club held an "end-of-the-semester social." We gathered at Double Dave's Pizza Works for a few hours of swapping stories about experiences in Czechoslovakia and future aspirations and living there.

Dr. Igor Hajek, Fellow in the Texas Chair in Czech Studies, also joined us and gave us his perspective on the future of Czechoslovakia.

In retrospect, I think that this has been a very good semester for the Czech Club here at UT. Next semester we will continue in our effort to make the Czech Club more visible on campus and will also continue to offer a diversity of activities that will both attract new students and offer Czech Club members an opportunity to develop their personal interests related to Czech culture and language.

The Minutes of the December 18, 1992 Special Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the Home Office in Temple ,Texas The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Sid Pokladnik at 10:45 a.rti. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Director-elect Bob Bayer was present.

The purpose of the special meeting was to consider employee salary adjustments, annuity supplements and refund to lodges.

Attention was called to the need to consider a special item relating to a memo received from the Texas Insurance Department. Vote was taken and it was unanimously decided to have Vice President Gebala report to the Board on the nature of the matter, which he did and it was agreed to consider this additional matter whenever the scheduled items are concluded. It appeared that because of new requirements, it may be necessary to refile two of our life insurance plans.

PREMIUM REFUND TO LODGES - Consideration of the premium refund to lodges was taken up and the proposed formula was presented by Financial Secretary Mikulas.

The formula used in determining the last refund to lodges for 1991 paid in January 1992 generated a total of $156,000 and is as follows: 1. 8% of premium paid for Certificates not on 1980 CSO. 2. 196 of premium for Loan Pay Life.

3 . $4.00 paid per Universal Life Certificate.

4. 12% of first year premium paid on 1980 CSO Certificates - does not include Certificates in ( 2 ) or ( 3) .

5. 6% of renewal premium paid on 1980 CSO Certificates - does not include Certificates in ( 2 ) or ( 3 ) .

6. $1. 00 paid for all Certificates and Annuities.

If this method of a refund is approved for 1992, the board could pre-approve incentive items for 1993 so that lodges could receive a higher refund amount. Some of these incentive items could include the following: 1. Lodges must hold regular monthly meetings (12 per year).

2. Lodges must comply with all requests from each department at the Home Office which would include furnishing copies of 990-9901 forms, fraternal activities reports and all other required forms and reports.

3. Lodges holding quarterly meetings be reimbursed at a lower rate but would be required to hold at least four meetings per year.

4. Lodges that secure 50 new certificates during the year would receive an additional $500.00 refund.

Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that he has reviewed this refund method with our actuary and he has agreed with this procedure and the amount that will be generated.

We will receive a separate letter from Mr. Agee addressing this procedure. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that reports indicate that the SPJST should have an outstanding year in 1992 which was reflected in the quarterly statement dated 9-30-1992.

During discussion, it was pointed out that the proposed refund formula will put us at the 1982 level of refunds. It was also reported that several lodges had received an advance refund due to urgent financial needs. Comment was made that some 23 lodges would have a decrease over the previous year although some lodges would have an increase. The need to be fair was stressed.

Discussion turned to a general policy previously agreed upon whereby a strong incentive be given to the lodges rewarding those with production and premium-paying members. It was suggested that the incentive approach of the formula for the lodges be simple and understandable and it be easily understood that a lodge will be rewarded for new production and the number of premium-paying certificates on the books.

There was discussion about setting production and new member goals for lodges.

After due deliberation, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska moved and Director Broz seconded a motion providing as follows: (1) that the proposed formula for 1992 premiums be adopted with the change that no qualifying lodge receive less than the past refund they received based on the 1991 premiums and the $3.50 per certificate recommendation be subject to consultation with our actuary.

(2) that by the March 1993 Supreme Lodge meeting, a new formula be adopted for the 1993 refund working in incentives for new production and specified lodge activities.

(3) that production and new member goals be set for each district and each lodge for 1993.

(4) that lodges 58, 95, 114, 141 be excluded since they are not functioning and their refunds be held and paid later if they again become active.

Discussion followed and the motion was amended to add $5 per certificate for each new certificate written in 1992. The motion to amend was by Director Vanek, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas and it carried with 11 in favor and Legal Advisor Kacir voting against.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that based on the amount of premium income collected in 1992, this last year's formula would generate approximately $135,000.00 as refund to our lodges . This decrease is due to the large amounts of annuities received during the year. He stated that a number of local officers have talked to him about this method and they indicated that last year's formula is rather complex and hard to explain to the general membership. His recommendation would be to refund local lodges according to the number of active certificates in force as of 12-31-1992 .

If we paid a refund of $3.50 per certificate, this method would generate a refund amount of approximately $180,000.00. This method of refund would be better understood and perhaps get more lodges involved with programs from the Home Office.

The Board reviewed a proposal projecting the refund for each lodge based on the $3.50 per certificate amount.

There was discussion about deleting refunds to lodges that did not hold monthly or quarterly meetings in 1992. Reports indicate these Lodges are: Lodge No. 8 57 58 85 90 95 103 110 114 122 141 147

Vote was taken on Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's motion with the amendment and it carried with eleven in favor and Legal Advisor Kacir voting against.

ANNUITIES - Vice President Gebala presented for consideration a new proposed annuity contract with a guaranteed rate of 3%.

Vice President Gebala had provided a written report on the matter on December 8, 1992 so that each Board member could thoroughly review the proposed certificate prior to action and submitting to the Texas Department of Insurance for their approval.

Vice President Gebala reported that the proposed certificate will lower the guaranteed rate from 5% to 3% (the lowest allowed by Texas Insurance Regulations). It also maintains the certificate in penalty status seven years rather than the present five years.

He stated he checked to see if we could base the penalty on individual deposit rather than initial issue date of the certificate but our actuary was of the opinion that the penalty must be based on the anniversary date of certificate and not on the deposit date.

Report was made that it was necessary to update our disclosure statement to include the Unemployment Compensation Act of 1992. This is being done by Rudd and Wisdom and was ordered on November 18, 1992. As of today the galley proof for submission has not been received. This does not require any action on the Supreme Lodge's part as the law dictates what is contained in this disclosure statement.

It was reported that after approval, our actuary is ready to submit forms for approval to the Texas Department of Insurance.

There was discussion about impact of guaranteed rate, procedures and general policy.

On motion by Vice President Gebala seconded by Director Vanek it was decided to proceed with filing of the new annuity contracts with the Texas Insurance Department for final marketing approval to be made in the January Supreme Lodge meeting. The new contract changes the guaranteed rate from 5% to 3% and changes the withdrawal charge from 5 to 7 years.

Vote was taken and the motion carried with eleven in favor and Director Hrncir voting in opposition.

EMPLOYEES' SALARIES - The directors indicated that they had had an opportunity to meet on this matter and Director Vanek presented the directors' recommendation on salary adjustments.

Director Vanek presented the Directors' recommendation for adjustments in the President's department. There was discussion and request for changes in the adjustments were considered but not accepted. The Board proceeded to vote on the recommendation for the President's department but the vote was stopped and the procedure was changed to allow review of recommendations for all departments before putting the proposed adjustments to a vote. The Board then reviewed the Directors' proposal for all departments.

After review and discussion, the proposed employee salaries for the President's department were approved on motion by Director Vanek and seconded by Director Hanus to include changes agreed upon. The vote revealed 11 in favor of the motion with Director Vavra abstaining.

The recommendation for adjustment in the Vice President's department were taken up and discussed. The recommendation for adjustment included making the field representatives Helen Hegwood, Jerome Hlavaty and Keith Gatewood full time which will qualify them for group hospitalization and the retirement plan.

After discussion, the employees salary adjustments for the Vice President's department were approved on motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried unanimously.

The recommendation for adjustments in the Secretary-Treasurer department were taken up and discussed. After making one change, the employees salary adjustments were approved on motion by Director Vanek seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

The recommendation for adjustment in the Financial Secretary department were taken up discussed and unanimously approved on motion by Director Vanek and seconded by Director Kohutek.

The recommendation for adjustments in the Legal department were taken up. After making one change, the employee salary adjustment was unanimously approved on motion by Director Vanek and seconded by Director Hanus.

The information and records on the amount of each employee's approved salary is maintained by the Financial Secretary.

Starting salary for an inexperienced individual was adjusted to $10,500 annually with authorization to increase to $11,000 annually after 6 months if approved by Department Head. If replacing a position requiring experience, contact Board for approval by mail poll with recommendation. Vote was taken and the motion carried with 11 in favor and Director Kohutek voting in opposition.

It was agreed on motion by Director Vanek seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas that we proceed with refiling insurance plans 107 and 108 with the Texas Insurance Department for the purpose of complying with the policy that for policies issued on or after January 1, 1993 the interest rate will decrease to 5% for life insurance policies with a guaranteed duration of 20 years or more. Motion carried unanimously.

The Supreme Lodge meetings during 1993 will begin on the following dates: January 11, March 8, May 10, July 12, September 7 and November 8.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 3:40 p.m.

SPJST Museum Receives Thanks From Young Visitors As we mentioned in the previous issue of the Vestnik, hundreds of Temple-area school children visited the SPJST museum during the holiday season.

While there, they learned something about the history of the SPJST and

about the valuable contributions the pioneer founders of our Society made to Texas. To show their appreciation, many of the young people wrote to the museum.

We reprint a small sampling of these letters below.

Dear Mrs. Pechal, I love your museum with all that pretty art. I thank you for the tour. It was wonderful. 1 like your Christmas tree with all the dolls around it. The log cabin and 70,000 pencils were pretty too. But what is important, is that the tour was interesting. Thank you for letting us come.

Letters from the Lodges Lodge 4, Hallettsville Meets and Enjoys Christmas Party Our lodge held its monthly meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 13, 1992 at the Youth Center. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led the members in the pledge to the flag.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed member, Matilda Gaidusek.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved. Treasurer Helen Zabransky, FAC Gaye Galetka, Sunshine Chairman Margaret Smotek and Youth Leader Jeanette Bender gave reports.

It was announced that the installation of officers would be held at the January meeting. The members voted to give $50 to the Bill and Vivian Belicek family, who lost their home and belongings in a fire. The meeting was adjourned.

The youth club then presented an enjoyable Christmas program. The program featured: A dance to "Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer" by Elizabeth Vahalik; • A Christmas News Report by Nicholas Vahalik; • The singing of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" by Karen, Kristen and Krystle Bender; and • Christmas songs by the Youth Club.

Gaynell Chudej and Gaye Galetka led the members in Christrnas songs as we waited for Santa's visit. Santa Claus arrived to the singing of Jingle Bells and visited with everyone, then he gave out gifts and bags of goodies. Before leaving, Santa gave out the door prizes to Albert Smotek and Joshua Siptak.

Lunch was served. The table looked festive, decorated in the Christmas theme. Evelyn Holy gave the meal blessing and then everyone enjoyed the goodies brought by the members.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 10th at the Youth Center.

Our lodge held its meeting on January 3, 1993 at 1 p.m. The members enjoyed a meal of turkey and dressing prior to the meeting. Our thanks goes to Robert and Lydia Dobecka for serving.

President Johnnie Krizan called the meeting to order. Tammy, Tracy and Celia Dobecka led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our editor, Brian Vanicek, installed the officers for 1993. Vice President Edwin Pechal stated that a new Christmas tree was donated to the hall from the entire Jerry Pechal family in memory of Brother Jerry Pechal.

Lodge 47, Seaton Moving Ahead in 1993 Dear Members, President Reese convened the January 3 meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the membership continued standing in a moment of silent prayer for deceased member and friend, Eulin K. Ross.

The first meeting of 1993 brought with it the installation of officers and board members by State Field Representative Gene McBride. In promising to fulfill specific duties of the positions, the elected members must also strive for fairness and overall improvement of the lodge.

Standing in for a flu-stricken Dolores Skrabanek was Dana Glaser, who handled the responsibility very well.

According to me (in a previous report), Lodge 47 had no treasurer—my apologies. Let it be known that Sister Lucy Mihatsch was reelected by acclamation as treasurer for 1993-94.

First Assistant Youth Leader Sharon Hejl reported 27 members, four visitors and two adults in attendance. The youth, 10 and over, were given the chance to experience firsthand how the Mother Lodge meeting is actually run.

Sister Hejl also stated that the youth leaders would welcome any suggestions.

Chairpersons' reports were given and listened to with interest.

79, Corpus Christi Reports on Meeting Lodge

Dear Members, The members who did not attend the meeting on Sunday, December 20 really missed a most delicious dinner, consisting of turkey and dressing and all the trimmings. Brother Jerry and Sister Jill Sijansky deserve a big thanks for their work for the dinner. It was delicious! It was topped off by a wide variety of sweets for dessert brought by the members.

The attendance was better than usual for the dinner and the annual meeting which followed the dinner. All the usual business was taken care of. Sister Thelma Hrncir, as the outgoing District Seven director, thanked the members for their support in the past. She gave a brief report on the last meeting she had attended in Temple. F.A.C. Jill Sijansky reminded members to fill out and bring information for the fraternal questionnaire to the next meeting.

A new sales representative was voted in and approved by the lodge. She is Sister Glenda Elzner. Welcome to the sales team, Glenda. There was a discussion about changing the Sunday afternoon meeting to a week night. By a show of hands, members voted to continue holding the meetings on Sunday afternoons. The first meeting in 1993 is scheduled on Sunday, January 17, 1993 at 2 p.m. and is to be followed by "svacina" as usual.

President Eugene Hrncir announced that he will not run for the presidency.

He then presided for the elections that followed. The officers elected were: President—Brother Jerry Sijansky Vice President—Sister Anna M. Dear Members and Friends, Happy New Year to everyone from Lodge No. 80! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and can look forward to 1993 with bright expectations.

Our Sunday, December meeting was called to order by President Harold Rohde. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members, President Rohde asked for the roll call of officers. All were present.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read. He then gave all reports of committees that were given to him and all are doing very well. Correspondence included a Christmas card from District II Director Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline.

Brother Harold thanked everyone who helped at the Christmas party they night before. Santa and Mrs. Claus were wonderful! Thank you for making the evening extra special for all.

In new business, the officers for the coming year were elected as follows: President—Harold Rohde Vice President and FACG. L. (Pee Wee) Brisbin Secretary-Treasurer—Glen Latham Financial Secretary—Glenda Liles Frank Pajestka, Jr. was appointed reporter to the Vestnik and elected sales representative.

We would like to thank outgoing Vice President Robert Marwitz for the past years of service as an officer of the lodge. Brother Robert declined to run for office in order to spend more time with his grandchildren.

Helen Pajestka made a motion that $100 be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of faithful bingo worker, "Baldy" Allison. The motion was seconded by Rick Benner and was passed. We will all miss Baldy, particularly at bingo. He worked every Thursday night for ten years, and was one of the original bingo crew. Baldy left us at a young 88 years of age.

Birthdays for the month include: Robert Marwitz, D. I. Bohac, Isabelle Kuntz, Otto Horelica, and Frank Pajestka, Jr. Door prize winners of candy canes included D. I. Bohac, Tina Entrop, Eddie Kuntz, Carl Klotz, G. L. Brisbin, Helen Pajestka, Florine Rohde, and Billye Latham.

January Meeting On January 3, 1993, the meeting was called to order by President Harold Rohde after the Pledge and a moment of silence. Brother Harold asked Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar to install the officers for the coming year.

Membership to the Holland Chamber of Commerce was accepted as well as Gold Star Donor for the upcoming Bell County Youth Fair. Birthdays for January were celebrated by Katherine Coker and Adele Horelica.

88, Houston Reports on Member and Lodge Activities Lodge

On November 27, 1992, at Lodge 88, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph V. Darilek, Rudy and Celestine, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their large and interesting family and their many relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph V. Darilek Here is the history of their family: eight children—three boys and five girls and 35 grandchildren-21 girls and 14 boys. Their grandmother, Celestine, sewed 21 girls dresses—all alike and all white. It was a show in itself. I wish everyone would have been able to see those sweet little children—especially when they all participated in the Grand March. Celestine also made most of her daughters' dresses. She is a loving and gifted person, and Rudy is a good provider. Do you know what their hobby is? Dancing. Celestine has a green thumb. She raises the most beautiful roses the year around.

The tables were decorated by Renee and were very pretty. A delicious meal was also catered and concluded at 11 p.m. with a dance by Donnie Wavra. Ed Miculka, who grew up with Rudy in Moulton, Texas and knew his life history, added some interesting happenings to the occasion. Celestine grew up in Fayetteville, Texas and some of us went to school together. So, we have never felt like strangers. They were the Veselka family. Celestine has four sisters and two brothers and Rudy has one brother and one sister.

Rudy and Celestine worked hard and accomplished a lot, including a beautiful family and a realm of friends. We wish both of you many more healthy years.

I am so far behind with my correspondence due to the holidays and whatever.

I did have a wonderful Christmas and am sure many more had a good Christmas.

Arlene and Al Marshall had the Christmas Eve dinner. Of course, my youngest granddaughter Susan and Tim Perkovick weren't able to be with us since Tim was in a bad accident—broken hip, broken thigh bone—and the seat belt cut his neck, which required stitches. Anyway, he's doing fine and is at home on crutches and therapy in Seguin, where they live. It will be a long recovery. We are all thankful he's still alive.

Evelyn Mikolas gave me this article right after Thanksgiving. I'll get caught up sometime soon: Betty Smith and Evelyn Mikolas spent the Thanksgiving holidays in Dallas with Betty's brother and Evelyn visited her sister, Gladys and Bill Craven and their family. They reported a busy

and enjoyable trip, and visited lots of places, such as the Bible Arts Museum, which Evelyn stated was most interesting. The special part of the trip was seeing their little great-nephews, Sam and Kyle Cravens. They made their trip by plane.

Helen Hegwood asked me to write about the following: Jerry J. Laznovsky and Hattie Mae met at Lodge 88, Houston. They moved to Ennis, Texas in 1950. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on December 6, 1992 in Ennis at the Sokol—SPJST Center.

In addition to the election of officers for the year 1993, we would like to discuss plans for some form of entertainment. It is to the interest of all members that we make an effort to continue to keep the club active.

Rather than attempting to present a stage drama, it seems that considerable interest is shown in a variety show as we had last year.

We have a great deal of talent among our members and friends and it is gratefully acknowledged that they are happy to participate.

A social will follow the meeting, and those that wish may bring a covered dish or some pastry so that we enjoy getting together again.

Eastern Europe: A View From Inside

by Martin Valko (Editor's Note: Martin Valko, age 18, is a native of the Slovakian region of the former state of Czechoslovakia. An exchange student, Martin is attending Temple Junior College on a tennis scholarship. We appreciate him taking the time to share his perspectives on Eastern Europe's new freedom.)

A couple of years ago, in a small, out-of-the-way village, an old man enjoyed life for the first time in many years. It was wonderful to see him and other old men smile and laugh. His happiness, however, was short lived; after a few months he died.

He was my grandfather, and he had been waiting for so long for this moment when freedom would be his again. He could hardly believe when I told him about the exciting changes that happened in Czechoslovakia in the winter of 1989, following a silent revolution on November 17th in Prague, the capital.

I proudly told him about my participation in it, when my friends and I started a strike in our high school, as part of the general strike to renounce the old communist government. Our fight was also directed against one teacher, who as a member of the secret police, had "taken care" of the whole faculty and the school. It was a very important time of my life.

I love freedom, and I always will support it, because a man is born to be free and not to be oppressed by those in power. What the government of the Soviet Union did to the nations of Eastern Europe was irresponsible. Who gave them that power? Nobody. It was taken by just one man who wanted it all. One man who wanted to control everything. I am talking about Joseph V. Stalin, the leader who became a monster in the eyes of his own people and those of other nations.

Stalinistic dictatorship was extraordinarily cruel in Hungary. After Stalin's death, their politics moved closer towards democracy. In 1956, demonstrations supporting a new set of democratic leaders were squelched by the Hungarian communist party with the help of—guess who? The Soviet army crushed a people who wanted to be free. Many were killed, others went to prison. All in support of Stalinists.

I was not alive in 1968, but what I've heard and read about the end of the Prague Spring '68, was cruel to everybody who lived in Czechoslovakia.

They called the invasion and occupation by the Soviet Army "friendly help" against democratic forces in the country. This "warm" visit finally ended last year, when 250,000 Soviet soldiers left, after staying for 22 years.

During those 22 years, they were supported by our parents' taxes, as were their tanks and weapons which defiled the beautiful landscape of my homeland. How can anyone describe what it feels to be free!

And what about the peoples of the now former Soviet Union? Why was it necessary to connect fifteen different nations, with different cultures and

dif-

ferent languages? How foolish was this idea of one big nation, under the leadership of the Communist party. I think V. I. Lenin was a bright man who knew a whole lot about socialism and communism, but would not have turned this knowledge into a tool of oppression. The leaders who followed him, however, believed otherwise.

They used the system to give them power over a big country, over millions of people, who would serve the big communist leaders.

The changes of the past few months in the Soviet Union were exciting and the peoples are on their own again.

They are going to have a lot of problems, but they don't have to he afraid of the KGB anymore. They are free.

The most important change for the Soviet Union took place in 1985, when M. S. Gorbachev became its leader. He was a thoughtful man with many ideas, and with a great mind to change the system. The people of the Soviet Union didn't like him so much, because he was the first leader who wanted to bring changes, but for the peoples of the Eastern Bloc, he was the greatest chance they ever had. Everybody was hopeful that he would change the relationship between the Soviet Union and the other countries of the Eastern Bloc.

And now, many countries in the world are trying to help these newly freed peoples by providing financial support and assistance. What is really important is to not give them things, but to teach them how to get them.

Don't give them fishes, but teach them how to fish. Teach them how to make better products which can compete on the world market.

I think Michail Gorbachev was the right man for the Soviet Union too. He

showed them a new way. He also started talking to the U.S. government and tried to improve relations between the two nations and to end the Cold War. The people of the Soviet Union were very afraid of the future. They were very surprised when he quit the Communist party.

Many forgot after a while how bad things had been, and they got worried more and more about the present; about what they were going to eat, and if they would have jobs; and how they would cope with inflation.

Nobody was expecting all these changes. He was the first leader who came up with something new— with something shocking. It is ironic that the changes he initiated also forced him out of office. It will take some time before the new states stabilize their economy, but now there is hope for a better tomorrow.

It is obvious that I fully support all these great ideas. I am happy that the long time of darkness is gone; that Eastern countries are not blind any more; that all these black curtains are finally lifted, and that all the little children over there can grow up in peace, enjoy freedom and happiness. They won't have to look at weapons any more and they will be able to choose their own friends.

Now, you can see, why my old grandpa was so happy when I told him all this, and why I was happy with him.

He was my best friend and we were planning to do so much together.

My grandpa had the right stuff and he may have wanted to see his children and grandchildren deal with freedom.

Yet, he died. Well, that too is a freedom.

I love freedom, and I always will support it, because a man is born to be free and not oppressed by those in power.

"happening," and both lodges enjoyed the gathering very much. The Lodge 84 Youth presented a wonderful Christmas program, and a group of Czech young people studying at SMU also entertained us with several exceptional numbers.

Fraternally, Rose Ann Parma Reporter, Lodge 130 P.S.—Brother Arnold Vrla sincerely appreciates all the good wishes and remembrances he received during his stay in the hospital and at the Rehabilitation Center. Hopefully, by the time this letter is printed, he will be settled in his new "home" for further care. He will not be able, as yet, to return to his own home but will be in a "personal care" home until he is able to fend for himself.

He is doing very well and progressing satisfactorily.

Sewing Circle Reports on Activities Ennis

1992 is gone, so are the resolutions some of us made but did not keep. If you made resolutions for 1993, do your best not to break them. It is a great feeling when set goals are accomplished.

The Circle met on December 10, 1992. President Sadie Kubin welcomed 43 members and nine guests. Our guests were Wesley Tupy, Joe Vlk, Jerry Kohn, Joe Kudrna, Bill Foit, Julius Podhrasky, Bob Zvolanek, Milan Kujka and Frank Laznovsky.

It was good to see Sisters Annie Kostak, Wilma Jelinek, Frances Vita and Frances Kudrna. We miss them when they are unable to attend.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited,

followed by the secretary reading the minutes of the previous meeting. They were approved as read. The treasurer then delivered the financial report, which was also approved as read. As for correspondence, it was reported that our Sunshine chairperson had sent 14 Christmas greetings to our shut-in sisters. A note from Sister Agnes Dujka was received and read, thanking the Circle for the get-well card and money gift.

Donations received were as follows: a memorial in memory of Annie Janousek by Sister Hattie Moucka; a box of sewing supplies by Mary and Emil Mancell of Dallas; sisters purchased items, proceeds were given to the Circle; a five-pound bag of sugar donated by Sister Louis Vlacilek.

I would like to correct a mistake I made in my November letter. Our newly-elected Assistant Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky took the minutes at our November meeting. My apology, Vlasta.

When we walked into our meeting place at the Sokol Hall, we saw a beautifully decorated Christmas tree which was there for our use. We placed our gifts underneath the tree. Thanks to the party or parties responsible for donating and decorating the tree.

After a bountiful and delicious meal, we exchanged gifts. The officers received a gift from the Circle. Sister Stacie Hejny gave each officer a lovely handmade pin cushion. Sister Libbie Wisniewski furnished the door prize. It was a tree-shaped tray filled with Libbie's homemade chocolate candies. The lucky winner was Sister Evelyn Slovak.

The table decorations were brought by Sisters Georgia Tupy, Mildred Trojacek and Libbie Wisniewski. Sister Georgia Zabojnik helped them decorate the tables.

Each of you is wished a very happy and healthy 1993. It is hard to believe that in seven years, it will be the year 2000. Maybe most of us will still be around to usher it in.

We will not have a meeting in January. Our next meeting will be February 11th. See you then.

Weaponry of the Middle Ages

Write the letter of the person at the end of he description which best describes that person.

1. KNIGHTS-CRUSADERS. Noblemen who sought to help recapture the Hold Lands from the Turks. Crusader comes from the Latin word crux, meaning "cross."

Crusaders often used the cross as a symbol.

2. SERFS. The serfs owned nothing. They lived on the lord's land, grew their own food and worked for the lord of the manor in his fields.

3. NUNS. Religious women who left their homes to live together in order to save their souls. The church welcomed all and no doubt many women entered nunneries to escape poverty.

The weapons of the Middle Ages were very different from those used by today's soldiers. Wars were often scenes of brutal hand-to-hand fighting. The knights did their fighting protected by heavy suits of armor and riding on horseback. Foot soldiers used bows and arrows or fought hand to hand with crude weapons wearing little protection from the blows of their enemies.

A Thirteenth Century Noblewoman's Costume

Offense or Defense eiow are descriptions of devices and methods used in attacking and defending castles. Match the descriptions to the drawings.

U se the italicized terms below to label the parts of a noblewoman's costume.

A noblewoman living in the thirteenth century wore a full-length gown which was loosely fitted and often set off by a narrow belt. Around the neck, the gown might have been decorated with embroidery or fur. A sleeveless coat, called a cyclas, was worn over the gown. The cyclas was a garment worn by both men and women. In cold weather, a cape, called a mantle, was worn over the shoulders, fastened at the neck by a cord.

Perhaps the most important parts of her costume were her headdress and hairdress. One kind of headdress popular at the time consisted of a pill box hat which was called a coif. The coif was worn over a chin band or barbette. The barbette fastened at the top of the head under the hat. The coif and barbette were usually white. To hold her hair, the noblewoman used a net called a crespine. The crespine was usually in color or of gold..

Shoes were plain and in dark colors with pointed toes. Sometimes they were fastened with laces. Stockings were striped.

Although thirteenth century clothes were generally plain, they were colorful. The noblewoman's gown below could have been green, blue or purple; her cyclas might have been red and her mantle still another color.

I. TUNNEL. Perhaps the surest way of weakening a castle's calls. The tunnel was dug by men called sappers. The sappers propped the tunnel with timbers as they burrowed. When they reach the foundation, they removed the stones until the wall was weak enough to collapse.

2. BALLISTA. A gigantic crossbow which required several men to operate. The ballista was very powerful and accurate. The word ballista came from the Greek word "ballein," meaning to throw. Ballistics is a modern word taken from the same word.

3. MACHICOLATIONS OR HOLES. Overhanging parts of the castle walls called parapets contained holes. When the castle was under siege, from these holes stones were dropped, boiling oil and water poured, or red hot iron thrown on the men below.

4. BATTERING RAM. Widely used by the Romans, the battering ram continued to be popular well into the Middle Ages. It consisted of the largest and strongest tree trunk that could be found. The tree trunk was suspended on chains and housed in a shed with a roof and wheels. Sometimes the tip of the trunk was covered with metal spikes. As many as 50 men would swing the huge tree back and forth in its cradle against the castle wall.

This usually went on nonstop until the wall weakened and collapsed.

5. PORTCULLIS. A device for protecting the entrance to the castle. The portcullis was a gate usually made of heavy wood and iron crossbars. It was pulled up and down by chains and slid in specially carved grooves.

6. TREBUCHET. The device operated like a giant seesaw. The short end was heavily weighted down with stones. Many men were required to pull down the long end which when released, fired a variety of unpleasant things such as huge stones, dead animals, burning chemicals and pitch.

Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to

another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.
