FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Thanks for the Memories Provide transportation of members to fraternal activities.

Give youth more responsibility by letting them conduct one adult meeting.

Get involved in an environmental program.

Tie in lodge events with holidays, for example: Mother's Day and Grandparent's Day. Organize ski trips and cruise package deals for members.

Develop programs for young married couples.

• Establish informal cultural and family history classes.

Use hall for community events, such garage as sales, auctions and rallies.

• Utilize member talents and smile, smile, smile.

• Offer defensive driving courses.

• Work to promote more cooperation between lodges in a district.

Get all age groups involved in a talent show or play.

Organize adult camping trips.

Provide educational programs that benefit the entire family.

More than a hundred ideas came out of that one-day workshop. Of course, what's good for one lodge may not work for another. The main thing is a lot of good ideas emerged from the brainstorming session.

As Brother Mikeska said, "The changing times have created challenges for the SPJST. By utilizing input from our members and relying on a team approach at all levels, we can meet those challenges."

Thanksgiving-A Time to Remember • All of us know something about that first Thanksgiving that took place in the • Plymouth Colony in 1621. After surviving an especially bitter winter and then reaping a plentiful fall harvest, the Pilgrims and • their native American guests, feasted for • three days on wild turkey and venison.

Since it became a national holiday in 1863, Thanksgiving has come to characterize a day of national reunion-an opportu- • nity for families and friends to get together, to share in each other's company, and • to express thanks for all of the good things in their lives.

For those who may have lost relatives and friends this past year, the holidays can be a difficult time. Death's sting is strong and it can leave one feeling sad and lonely. During the upcoming Holiday Season, may we-as caring fraternalists-offer each other support and give thanks for the memories of our loved ones who have passed on. May we all find some measure of joy and comfort in reveling in the warm . and colorful memories of our departed brothers and sisters.

Many of the innovative ideas • and suggestions generated that sunny Saturday in Elgin remain quite timely.

New Ideas from the Past Last Spring, approximately 185 fraternalists participated in tthe lodge officers workshop held at Lodge No. 18, Elgin.

A prime example of grass-roots teamwork, everyone had the opportunity to participate and share ideas for new and better ways to meet the needs of our membership. 22 teams were formed and asked to come up with new ideas on what the SPJST could do for its members on the lodge, district and state level.

While the workshop itself may be old news, many of the innovative ideas and suggestions generated that sunny Saturday in Elgin could bring new light to some of our lodges. As Supreme Lodge Secretary Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said in his review of the workshop, "There is a wealth of talent in our local lodges and we encourage you (local lodge officers) to have your own team sessions to develop new programs for your lodge."

With the new year just around the corner, this might be just the time for local lodges and youth clubs to conduct such "brainstorming sessions." There's no telling what someone might come up with. To get started, it might be helpful to look back as some of the many ideas that came out of the workshop last spring. Here are a few of them: • Hold special family nights with games and refreshments; have speakers and distribute information on SPJST member benefits.

• Form a telephone committee to inform members of functions and activities of the lodge.

DYCs Meet in Temple Last Saturday, your editor had the privilege to visit with our District Youth Counselors who were in Temple for their fall meeting. Among the many items discussed at this meeting were modifications to the youth rule book, the SPJST scholarship program, suggestions for improving State Youth Achievement Day and Royalty contests and summer camp. Be sure to look to next week's issue of the Vestnik for a full report by State Youth Director Joni Lange on these issues. ***

Keep Those Pennies Coming In To date, your generous support of the 1993 scholarship drive has generated more than $4,500--enough to award nine additional $500 scholarships next year.

The drive continues through December 31. Until then, State FAC Frank Klinkovsky, who is coordinating the program, encourages everyone to "keep those pennies-and dollars- coming in."

December 31, 1992 marks the deadline for applying for 1993 SPJST Scholarships. Scholarship applications that are postmarked on or before, will be processed and the applicants sent a package of materials that must be completed and returned to the Home Office on or before March 1, 1993.

More than half of the young people who applied for freshman scholarships last year were awarded scholarships.

Two-thirds of those who applied for undergraduate scholarships also won.

Those who applied last year and did not receive a scholarship are encouraged to reapply this year. High school seniors who plan to attend college this year are also urged to apply. There is a special box to mark on the SPJST scholarship application for those students planning to attend a Texas State Technical College.

TSTC has three locations in Texas— Amarillo, Harlingen, and Sweetwater and three extension campuses located in Breckenridge, Marshall and McAllen.

Around the Districts

SPJST Home Office employees will donate their time to KNCT TV, Channel 46, on Tuesday night, December 1st, from 6 until 10 p.m. The employee volunteers will answer phones and take pledges for the 1992 Holiday Season Fund Drive for the public broadcasting station which is location on the campus of Central Texas University in Killeen.

The volunteers will be providing a valuable community service as well as promoting the Society through television exposure.

If any lodges or members would like to support Public Television, (KNCT TV, Channel 46) by making a donation pledge, please call the station on Tuesday night, December 1st.

Recipes Wanted for District V Cook Book The District V Officers and Youth are working to put together a new cook book.

We would like to have a variety of recipes from canning, meat dishes, desserts, vegetables, stews and breads. Also, to keep our Czech (German, Polish, etc.) heritage alive through the younger chefs, any dish you would like to share with others that was your mother's or grandmother's, will be considered for printing in the book.

Youth Department Sponsoring Camp T-Shirt Design Contest Dear Youth Club Leaders and Members, Once again, the Youth Department is sponsoring a T-shirt contest for all youth club members. The purpose of the contest is to create an artistic design for the 1993 camp T-shirts.

The theme for this year's T-shirts design contest will be "SPJST Youth Clubs—Building Bridges to a Better Tomorrow."

Carefully read the contest rules below—and good luck with your entry.

Rules 1. Entries are due January 31, 1993 2. All entries are to be original and created by the youth club members.

3. All entries become the property of the SPJST. 4. Entries should be simple in design and easy to reproduce on a T-shirt.

5. Ask your youth leader for an official entry form.

TSPIST Salutes 100 Percent Families

With seven districts and 118 active lodges, the SPJST depends heavily on family participation to prosper and maintain a spirit of fellowship. In appreciation of that support, the Supreme Lodge introduced its "100 Percent SPJST Family" program in September. Through letters to local lodges and articles in the Vestnik, 100 percent families were encouraged to report their 100 percent families to the SPJST Supreme Lodge. To date, that response has been great.

The following is the sixth listing of 100 Percent SPJST families who have registered their family and will be receiving a certificate acknowledging their contribution to the Society. More names will appear in upcoming issues of the Vestnik.

Letters from the-Lodges Lodge 17, New Tabor Memorial and Dinner December 6 Dear Members, New Tabor held its regular meeting on November 1 with all officers present. A resolution was read for departed Brother Daniel Stefka. We would like to extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Brother Stefka.

FAC Sefcik reported that the State Volleyball Tournament will be held on November 21.

Sefcik also talked about the Open House for the museum at the Home Office on December 4.

We were also told about the Tarok tournament at Lodge No. 47, Seaton on January 9.

We will have our local straight domino playoff on January 23 with the playoff for "42" teams on February 6.

We will have election of officers at our next meeting on December 6.

We will have our annual memorial service on December 6 at 5:30 p.m. with a turkey dinner following the memorial service and the youth program.

20, Granger Schedules Christmas Party December 6 Lodge

The Christmas Party of Lodge 20, Granger will be held Sunday, December 6 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Our officers cordially invite the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the Editor of the Vestnik We are inviting all the members and their families to come and have a good time and share fellowship with one another though their membership in the SPJST. This will also be our annual meeting.

Several members received their 50year pins this year. These members will be honored at our Christmas Party. They are William Brunner, Effie Virginia Cervenka, Henry B. Krumpack, Wilma F. Lindsay, and Alfred F. Vitek.

The Youth Club will sing Christmas carols and Santa Claus will make his visit to greet everyone.

A supper will be served and each family is asked to bring two dishes: a vegetable and a desert.

We will also give special recognition to 100 Percent SPJST Families. Information forms will be handed out for all who qualify. These families who qualify will received a 100 Percent SPJST Family

recognition certificate, plus have their names published in the Vestnik. New 100 Percent SPJST Families (since January 1, 1992) may also include a family picture for publication in the Vesmik.

32, Victoria Readies for Holiday Season

By the time you read this, I feel certain that you will be full of turkey and dressing and saying "Never again!" How fortunate we are to live in "The Land of Plenty"—let us never forget to be thankful and sharing. I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and friends.

President Franklin Elles presided over the meeting held on November 11th. Our main business that night was going over the very successful cakewalk, discussing the upcoming Fraternal Fest to be held in Sweet Home on November 22nd, planning the Christmas party and going over plans for the Polka-Waltz Fest on February 14th.

Our Christmas party will be held on our regular meeting night, December 9th, at the home of Franklin and Lois Elles at 6:30 p.m. The lodge will furnish a ham, bread and drinks and each family is to bring a vegetable or dessert. We will have a short business meeting with the election of officers and a lot of socializing—don't miss out on the fun!

Dear Members, The November 15th meeting was convened by President Jim Locke at 2 p.m.

Flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Sandra Trickett. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alicia Neslony.

The SPJST motto was led by Justin Engelke.

The membership remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for the deceased member Curtis Treat.

Roll call of officers showed that all were present.

Mildred Morris was welcomed as a visitor. Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved.

Correspondence was then acknowledged and discussed about the first SPJST District III Fraternal Fest which will be held at the District III meeting.

Board minutes were read by Larry Langlotz. .Sister Lucille Cervenka gave the entertainment report and announced that they purchased a new Christmas Tree for the hall.

The Youth Club report was given by Youth Leader Gladys Yates. There were 17 youth members, two new members and seven adults present.

They will donate Christmas tinsel and decorations to the Moody nursing home.

They will have their Christmas Party on December 10th.

On December 27, they will have the District III Christmas Party at Lodge 84.

Lodge 66 had several winners in the District III Christmas Ornament Contest.

On November 9, 1992, our monthly meeting was held at Lodge 88.

President Jerome Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

After the flags were placed in their respective places by the flag bearers Michelle Linney, Darlene and Marlene Migl, Jerry announced that we had no deaths in October. He also called the roll of officers. All were present except our Legal Advisor Richard Schnell.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes which were approved as read and she also read correspondence from Mrs. Georgia Lee and the George Faigle family.

The Living or Memorial Benefit Fund Committe Report from Lodge 84, Dallas The Living or Memorial Benefit Fund at Lodge No. 84 has been established to honor and remember friends or loved ones.

This fund will be used to assist in the needs of the lodge that arise such as taxes, loan payments on the building and repairs to maintain ain the lodge that we all love.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the names of our applicants and we accepted them.

President Jerry gave his monthly report about Czech Day in October and we were all so pleased with the profit that we made that day. Secretary-Treasurer Shirley Stonaker gave her report followed by F.A.C. Homer Alexander. Homer always gives such fine reports and does so much for the people in need. He will have two Defensive Driving courses again. One in January 14 and 15, 1993. The other will be April 16-18, 1993. Do take this course, as it saves you money on your insurance for three years. Now—in these hard times—every little bit helps.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave a wonderful talk, which I hope everyone listened to. You are never too old to learn.

She mentioned going to the IMAX Theatre with the youth. I hope they took in the Museum of Natural Science. Helen Hegwood and I took our grandchildren, Kelsy and Adam, and it was very interesting to them. Barbara's Youth Club decided to make something for the orphans for Christmas. Isn't that a beautiful idea? And, not to forget, the Lodge 88 Youth Christmas Program will be Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. at Lodge 88. This is a splendid idea to have it on a Sunday I do hope that all of you will bring your little ones and grandchildren and watch them beam. I'm sure Tim and his choral Group will sing also, and they always invite the children.

It's such a thrill for them to participate.

Chairman Viola Cox of the Entertainment Committee had a short report since her dances were not too well attended, but I'm sure the month of October and November has so many other things, such as anniversaries, weddings, church bazaars and reunions. President Lowrina Lindemann thanked all who helped in he kitchen for Czech Day. This was an extremely busy week to get all the ingredients for that super dressing we had. Willie Wehring baked 38 turkeys in his pit, which was a great help.

She also announced our meeting for the Birthday Club. The club sisters furnished sandwiches and pastry.

President Ed Miculka reported on the Men's Club, that he is so proud of. He has 47 men now—two new members. Vice President Tom Marsh took care of the prize drawing and it turned out to be a success. Ed praised Tom as the best for this job.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann announced that all appliances are in working condition and also named some repairs that had to be made.

Gene Barcak, president of the Choral Group, announced that they have been very busy the last month and in December.

He failed to mention that the Choral Group will go to the Needville Rest Home

to perform on December 19, from 2 until 3 p.m.

Tom Marsh reported that the books were audited and found in order.

Mary Kosut, our benevolent lady, had three and four months report due to being ill; however, she cut the report short.

DYC Marie Stayton had been to Lake, Texas to the campgrounds and she explained the facilities to us.

Once again, Lodge 88 will be awarding scholarships for the 1993 school year.

Application forms can be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Bean Street, Houston, Texas 77008, and returned to the office before Dec.31, 1992.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years and file an application during the senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1993.

A friendly ghost finds a home on the Lodge 192 bulletin board. weddings and for the sixteenth birthday parties for the Mexican girls. Maybe, by chance, her husband, Frankie, might help or her daughter, Corina. Again, these pictures should give you an idea how nice we have it in our lodge.

All members of the lodge send congratulations to Clem and Louise Oujesky on their 60th wedding anniversary. It is wonderful to be able to see someone that celebrates so many years of married life.

As the marriage vows state—it is "till death do we part.." So often, though, for the present generation, it seems that it is hard for a new marriage to last very long.

There are many reasons for this that we won't get into's° I will end the subject.

It will be next month—on December 13—that the four Metroplex lodges have their annual Christmas Party. It will be held at the Sokol Athletic Hall on Boat Club Road in Fort Worth. The four lodges include Lodges Nos. 92, 154, 180 and 183. This always brings many members together—even if it is just once a year. So, hope to see many of you there.

It will be nice to have our District Three Director present to install the newly elected officers in one large group. I would like to see our editor and wife here to enjoy the day. There will be a dinner and dance later. This is what you could call real Fraternalism and Friendship.

We at our lodge want to send get well wishes to Sister Elsi Davenport who has back problems. She has been unable to attend some dances and lodge meetings.

Also, Art Gillis had an operation recently. We hope that both are feeling better now. To the ones in the Nursing homes—Sister Bennie Bartek, Sister Francis Tirk, Sister Vlasta Dolkos and Annie Langer, we do miss seeing you, but you are not forgotten. These are a few of the people who made our lodge what it is today.

Martha Durham sent birthday cards to members over the age of 65 and to those not feeling well.

The Fraternalist for 1992 was selected and a plaque was given to her. There was also a very nice speech from one of the committee members that helped select her. We are proud to have Christine Zich as Fraternalist for our lodge for 1992.

Christine has been secretary for 23 years and has helped to make the lodge, better in every way she can. When the Supreme Lodge started the Fraternalist of the Year Program in 1987, Carl W. Zich was the first individual selected. He was fol-

177, Academy Elects New Officers

The November lodge meeting was held November 11,1992. Lodge President Otis Beck called the Meeting to order.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, all remained standing in remembrance of Veterans Day. All officers were present.

The minutes of the October meeting were approved as read by Secretary Kathy Fritz. All committee reports were also read and approved.

Libbie Bartek reported that Vernie May was in the hospital and that a get well card had been sent to Margie Whitehead. We wish both of them a fast recovery.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator J. C. Johnson again reminded the membership of the 100 Percent Family program and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Celebrating a November birthday was Janet Lyons. Kevin and Wendy Beck celebrated their first anniversary in November and are also proud parents of a baby girl.

Congratulations to all.

The canned goods drive was extended to the next meeting. Food items collected will be given to a needy organization.

A reminder was also made to remind members to complete their fraternal reports and bring them to the next meeting.

Seven new members were voted on and accepted. They were: Todd Montgomery, Michael and Sherril Tull, Alyssa Tomastik, Michael Bartling, Breanna Taylor and Katelyn Taylor. We want to welcome all of these new member3 to our lodge.

Installation of officers will be held and our Christmas Social will follow. The meat will be furnished by the lodge and the members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Reports on Activities On the first Monday of each month, the Catholic Daughters of America, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Ann Stauffer come to play Twilight Bingo at 6:15 p.m. for one hour. Afterwards, we have refreshments served by her helpers. During th day, we have horse shoes in the morning and music exercise in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, we have music exercise in th f, and bingo in the afternoons.

Elsie Flink, Demetria Shiller and Lois Gainer (caller) come every week. When they can't make it, some of the others who help include: Gertrude Pulbrabek, Eunice Stoll, Irene Schroeder and Elizabeth Vorwerk.

On the first Tuesday of each month, the Christian Sisters of the Taylor Brethren Church come to sing at night and visit the residents. Also, the Residence Council

meets the first Tuesday of each month.

The Council discusses plans for the coming month and plans two meals per year.

The residents have input in what goes on in the nursing home. They make suggestions or voice complaints.

On Wednesday, Rev. Dan Hitt, from the 10th Street Methodist Church and Rev. Noble Atkins, from First United Methodist Church, take turns having a short devotion and sing a gospel song with the residents.

They greet each resident in the lobby that morning and some shut-ins, too.

Margaret Aanstoos brings the Catholic residents communion on Wednesday morning and then visits other residents in the halls. Father Lonnie Urban of St. Mary's Church and Father Greg Perez of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church also come by once a month to celebrated Mass on the sun porch. In addition, on Wednesday afternoons, Michael Stouffer comes to play his guitar and harp to the delight of the residents. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Stouffer. On Thursday, we have Rhythm Band. Mr. Pete Blomquist and Mrs. Kovar lead the band to some good polkas. Then, Mr. Blomquist sings a few old gospel songs and visits the residents down the halls.

On the second and fourth Thursday nights of every Monday, the Taylor Czech Chorus comes to sing songs in both Czech and English. Mrs. Diane Volek, bookkeeper for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, plays the piano for the group. Each Thursday afternoon, the residents enjoy the Reminiscence Group. Mrs. Lois Gainer, Vla Mae Schidmit and Mrs. Barbara Barnes help Mrs. Kovar bring interesting topics to discuss and bring interesting objects to look at while we talk about the subject.

Once a month, we have a birthday party after we finish lunch. Mrs. Kovar reads a little history about each resident that has a birthday that month. We then sing Happy Birthday and have ice cream and cake for dessert.

On Friday mornings, the staff has care plan meetings with the residents and their families. The residents also get their hair done on this day. Then, in the afternoon, Harold Nelson plays his accordion for the residents. It makes for a lot of toe-tapping. Twice a month, they watch the latest movies in the game room.

Mrs. Agnes Prikryl comes and does one-to-one visits in the residents room every week. Also, Lois Gainer and Vla Mae Schidmit of Hutto, Texas come weekly .

The Taylor Girl Scouts, under the direction of Mrs. Pam Jones, have adopted our residents as their grandparents. They come visit on a one-to-one basis and mail them cards on special holidays.

Mrs. Mary Jo Galbraith, from Elgin, Texas, comes every month with fresh flowers in bud vases for our dining tables.

It really lifts their spirits at meal time.

Three times a week, Mrs. Kovar and the 3 to 11 staff do validation therapy in a game room before supper. This helps this group validate their feelings by using a memory box with objects they are familiar with in their lifetime. We also use objects to wake up their five senses—sight, taste, touch, hearing anci smell.

Mrs. Kovar wished to thank anyone who comes in the Nursing Home to make life a little better for our residents.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Hosts Halloween Party for Residents S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 held Halloween Party on the afternoon of Friday, October 30. The St. Paul Lutheran Day Care children modeled their Halloween costumes and sang several songs under the direction of Becky Balli and Rita Kelm. Then, they also went down the halls to visit the in-room residents.

The Taylor Girl Scouts, under the direction of Mrs. Pam Jones came on Saturday and showed off their costumes for the residents. The staff also had a jack-o-lantern contest. The winners were: Jancice Robinson, Kim Gonzales, and Diane Volek. The staff then modeled their outfits. Refreshments, including cupcakes, orange sherbert, angel cake, candy treats by Shirley Hoiubec, Kim Gonzales. Allison West and Pauline Kovar were served.

Christi Circle of Women Enjoy Busy Holiday Season Corpus

The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met Thursday, November 5, at SPJST Lodge No. 79, Sokol Hall. There were 21 members and one guest, Jerry Elmer, present when the meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. Another guest, Father George Harris joined us after the meeting and in time to give the blessing before our luncheon.

Father George is the son of Helen Sacky and also my cousin. He recalls the many times his grandmother, the late Sophie Hubacek took him by streetcar to Krouzek meetings at the old Dallas Sokol on Carl Street. Currently, Father George is living in Los Fresnos where his parish is located and he also serves the parish in Los Olmos. He comes to Corpus Christi

frequently to visit his mother. We enjoyed having him with us and hope he can join us again soon Marcellina Mokry, who came to our October meeting as a guest of her sister, Mary Ann Elzner, returned to become a member of our group. We welcome her and are happy to have her join us.

Since our treasury has exceeded our expectations, and the Christmas Season is fast approaching, we decided to spend $50 for a turkey and food to donate to the local Women's Shelter. Betty Jurica is in charge of this project. Members are asked to bring clothing, food, books, gift items and anything appropriate for women and children to add to the purchases made by Betty. They will be delivered well before Christmas. It was also decided to make another donation to Sokol Corpus Christi.

Prizes for our November drawings were donated by Carrie Veselka, Mary Ann Elzner and Anna Marie Moss. The winners were Velma Malchar, Lil Hruska and Milly Elzner. Two additional prizes were awarded to Georgia Ann Kubala and Lillian Covill for winning the last games played. Kathy Marek, who accepted the position of Entertainment Committee Chairperson last month, made the cute tote bag and coaster set the lucky ladies won.

After the meeting, we were given the treat of viewing several tables full of imported gift items brought by Milly and Jerry Elzner. There were all sorts of beads, cut glass items, dolls in Czech costumes, table cloths, etc. from Czechoslovakia and a few from Poland and Germany.

Some of us took advantage of the opportunity and did some early Christmas shopping. Thanks to Milly and Jerry for this pleasant experience and for playing lovely Czech music for us.

Our hostesses for November outdid themselves. Anita Regmund baked the most delicious turkey and dressing I've eaten in years. The other hostesses brought sweet potatoes, classic green bean casserole, a cranberry salad mold, tossed salad, hot rolls and topped it off with kolace and makova buchta baked by Helen Pavelka. Wow! What a feast! Thank you ladies.

It was decided that instead of the usual luncheon after our December 3 meeting here at Sokol Hall, we will car pool and go to the Golden Corral. The Krouzek will pay $5 per member, each lady making up the difference of her tab. We will then return to the hall for games and the drawing for prizes.

Don't forget to bring your gifts to be taken to the women and children at the shelter.

Christi Circle of Women Report on Meeting Corpus

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Women's Circle of Corpus Christi held its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. on November 5, 1992. The meeting was called to order by President Anna Marie Moss. Secrtary Millie Elzner read the minutes of the September meeting, accepted after one minor correction was made.

Project for December is a food basket to be donated to the Womens Shelter in Corpus Christi. Also, it was suggested that any member may bring extra items.

Betty Jurica will do the shopping for the food basket. A $50 donation was also made to Corpus Christi Sokol.

Next meeting will be held December 3rd. The members will meet at Sokol Hall at 10:30 a.m. and from there have a luncheon at the Golden Corral.

Circle of Czech Women Report on Activities Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Esther Cunningham led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of: Frank Vitovsky, father of Evelyn Trojacek; Bill Sill, husband of Mary Sill; and Woodson Schmitter, nephew of Evelyn Cechan.

Correspondence was read by Evelyn Trojacek. A "Thank You" card (for the "Thinking of You card) was received from Rose Kopecek; a "Thank You" card and money gift (for the "Get Well" card) was received from Dorthy Reznik.

A "Thank you" card (for "Sympathy" card) was also received from Evelyn Trojacek. Finally, a "Thank you" card was received by Evelyn Trojacek from Liddie Pavelka, for the donation to the Krouzek in memory of her dad.

From the Sunshine Committee, Liddie Pavelka sent "Get Well" cards to Rose Kopecek and Dorthy Reznik, together with a hospital money gift.

Old Business The By-Laws Committee elected to wait until after the first of the year to bring a report. If there are any changes you would like to make, please write them on paper and given them to the ByLaws Committee.

News of Members Congratulations to Sister Anne and Bob Zvolanek who received the honor of being the oldest married Czech couple at the State Fair in Dallas They have been married for 55 years. At 83 years young, Bob was also honored as the "Oldest Czech Gentleman" at Czech Day. The Zvolanek's received plaques for each honor.

Congratulations to Sister Lillian Urban Moran who received the title of "Oldest Czech Lady" at the State Fair.

Sister Moran, who is 85, also received a trophy.

Sorry to hear Arnold Vrla is in the hospital. Hope he is feeling better.

Congratulations to John and Rose Marie Athas of Culver City, California who are the proud parents of a son, Vincent William, born October 26, 1992. he weighted in at 9 pounds, 8 ounces. The proud grandparents are Angelo and Stacy Athas.

David Reznik, son of George and Dorothy Reznik is now landscape architecture manager for Unzecker Schnurbusch.

On November 11, 1992, the Birthday Club was called to order by President Lowrina Lindemann at 11:25 a.m. with the roll call. We had a good attendance

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the monthly report and reported on the Pastry Booth, which she was in charge of for Czech Day. We had many fine pies, cakes and kolaches from the club members, Lodge 88 members and ladies who don't even belong— but we wish they did, as the insurance is the best. We thank every one of you for having a part in the Pastry Booth.

Mary Kosut, our Sunshine Lady, does her job well. She doesn't forget anyone, and sends cards to all. Mary then made a motion, seconded by Adela Kite, to have a covered dish lunch on December 9. Read the following carefully, as this pertains to our Christmas dinner on December 2.

On December 2, we will have a Christmas dinner catered for the club members and their spouses, the lodge officers and members of the board and their spouses. If there are any guests that day, the charge is $4. President Lowrina will order the plates, so be sure to let her know immediately if you intend to eat with us,because if you don't, there will not be any extra food.

A suggestion: You are still invited to play games, but you'll have to bring a sack lunch.

The catered dinner will be a Christmas dinner—turkey, dressing, gravy and "the works." Come and let's have a nice day together. The dinner will be served promptly at 12 noon. Cakes will be furnished by Lillie Spies, Bessie Lero, Inez Jeanes, Mary Johnson and Pearl Hanka. A Merry Christmas Rosalie Kostom brought to the meeting the Birthday Club's first yearbook. The Birthday Club was organized in 1946 by our dear Frances Olena who was our President and Mary Elzner, who was our first Secretary. Mary Kosut gave the report on the book which everyone enjoyed.

Our sick sisters are Martha Baxter; Alice Bily—who had open-heart surgery at St. Lukes Hospital; and Julie Kinnamon, one of our new members, who is confined to the hospital with a son with a serious illness. Flo Orsag's husband Calvin was very ill but is improving.

Adela Kite also gave us a good report on her husband, Henry. And guess what?

Ana Hoffman is at home recuperating.

Virginia Hale was the only birthday celebrant in attendance. We sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

The Calcutta Game was won by Bessie Lero and Lowrina Lindemann.

The meeting adjourned at noon.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle Reports on Activities Lodge

In place of our usual meeting at the hall, the Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 went to lunch at the Red Lobster restaurant. We had a large crowd of 63 attending, which included six guests. The weather was rainy and miserable but everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship, after a prayer of thanksgiving was read.

Lillie McMillen gave a brief report on cards sent to members and their families.

It is with sadness that we report that one of our long-time members, Tillie Gillis passed away November 11th, after a long period in a nursing home. She was buried Friday in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Her husband, Art Gillis, is still recovering from knee surgery.

Door prizes went to Rose Jaworski, Mac McMillen, Laura Posival and Bill Kosarek.

Birthday greetings were sung to Elma Anderson, Flora Koci, Merel Kovar, Lillie McMillen, Victor Murphy, Laura Posival, Anne Schneider and Claude Marchioni.

After lunch, some of the members returned to the hall to enjoy a few games.

Secretary Merel Kovar's minutes were approved as read, as was the treasurer's report by Lydia Alhohn.

A "thank you" was read from Michael Hennessey. Glad to hear that he is feeling better.

We were sorry to hear Roberta Peters fell and won't be able to attend the meetings. We extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

The Sunshine Chairperson reported on all cards sent.

Annie Whitsill reported on the wedding of her granddaughter.

We extend our congratulations to Clem and Louise Oujesky who just celebrated their 60th Anniversary. May you have many more.

We will have our Christmas Dinner at our next meeting on Wednesday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m.

For those who want to participate in gift giving, the amount is $5 per gift.

Everyone enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner. A special thanks to Irene Green and Mary Tesar for fixing the turkeys and all of the trimmings. We had plenty of good food.

Letters Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Enjoy the Holiday Season Dear Members and Freinds, Our Halloween Party was October 23 and was well-attended by youth and adults. We had hot dogs and chili and other goodies. Then we judged the Halloween costumes. The first place winner, Jennifer Michell, was dressed in black. The second place winner, Brian Michell, was dressed as a cowboy. The third place winner, Christy Dobecka, was dressed like a queen.

We want to thank the judges for judging for us.

On October 25, we attended the district meeting at Lodge 135. Those who attended included Robert and Lydia, Peggy, Tammi and Celia Dobecka and Willie Mae Schuetz.

After lunch, the Youth Club had their meeting. Following the meeting, the youth clubs carved pumpkins. Celia Dobecka received third place in her age group.

The Youth Club is working on Christmas gifts for the rest home. On December 4 we will decorate the Lodge Hall.

So, all of you that can come and help us, we need lots of help.

The Christmas Party will be on December 6, with the lodge meeting at 1 p.m. The Youth Club meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. After the meetings, we will have games for young and old. Then we will have supper around 5 p.m. followed by a short Christmas program. So, come and join us. We also will have a Christmas tree and Santa Claus Celebrating birthdays in November are Bradly Kroll, Samantha and Susan Hrabal, Christi Mach, Michelle Mach and Traci Dobecka.

New business discussed included the Christmas program for the December 13 meeting. We will have two or three practices.

We will be selling chances to raise money for the Youth Club. Prizes are: a handmade quilt and Christmas ornaments. We want to thank Mrs. Frazier for donating the quilt. The drawing will be at the December 13 meeting.

The Youth Club family Christmas supper will be on December 20th.

9, Snook Performs Thanksgiving Skit Lodge

Dear Readers, On November 1 lth, the Snook Youth Club had their monthly meeting. It was well attended and we had a new member, Courtney Macik.

We talked about our Christmas Program on December 6th at 6 p.m. After the meeting, we did a Thanksgiving skit.

As Becky read a Pilgrim story, we had to make animal noises when our word was read. That was funny. Then we made fall baskets with paper sacks and put pine cones and fall leaves into them.

Our next meeting will be on December 6th at 2 p.m. After the meeting, we will decorate the hall for our Christmas program.

Whitney Rhea Bohenberger, age 6, is a new member of the Lodge 185 Youth Club.

The daughter of Glenn and Susan Bohenberger, she has two older brothers, Mark Whitney Bohenberger and Stacey.

Whitney's hobbies are reading and playing card games—which she usually wins. She has recently learned to play chess and also takes piano lessons.

She is a first grader at St. James Catholic School in Seguin, Texas.

The Annual Christmas Party of the Snook Youth Club will be December 6, 1992 at the Snook SPJST Hall.

Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE—FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR—INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vam, Vag ; Ty, Tviij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized.

—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidel, gel prye.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a uC se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks— "").

Ambassador to Speak at UT-Austin The Honorable Michael Zantovsky, Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to the United States and the Distinguished Professor Igor Hajek, appointed the first Fellow in the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at the University of Texas at Austin for the fall semester 1992, will speak on the topic "Czechoslovakia, December 1992 Update" at the University of Texas at Austin. The lecture will be held on Saturday, December 5, 1992 at 4 p.m. on the UT campus in Calhoun Hall 100. A reception will follow the lecture.
