SPJST Congratulates September "Top Producers" Vice President encourages enrollment in "Quick Start II" Congratulations to all of our SPJST Top Producers in September. The Society's membership is grateful to those who take their valuable time to study our program and make our portfolio of life insurance products available to the members and, of course, prospective members.

The part time sales force the SPJST utilizes to market its products means a vast majority of our sales representatives are doing this as a secondary income.

After putting in a hard day's work, they then train, study and sell SPJST insurance. Our job at the home office is to develop plans of insurance and methods of selling that will make the sales representatives job as easy as possible. We DISTRICT I EARNED PREMIUM Lola Vavra Lodge 17

The past two issues of the Vestnik have mentioned the Quick Start-II training program. The SPJST has experimented with this program and we believe that those sales representatives who are really committed to do a good job for the SPJST, their lodge and the members will gain substantially by enrolling in this program. It should be noted that to be successful, you must put forth time and effort. Nothing comes easy.

learning techniques. The major facets of the program deal with sales presentation, prospecting, planning and persistency.

Our hope is that all our sales representatives will enroll in this course so that they can better serve our membership. We have developed some incentives for 1993 for which only sales representatives who have completed the Quick Start Program will be eligible.

Sales representatives attending the upcoming sales seminars will be instructed how to enroll in Quick Start.

The cost of tuition will be paid by the enrollee and upon successfully completing the course, the Society will reimburse them. Remember, knowledge is like money—you never have enough.

The SPJST appreciates the efforts of these and all members of our volunteer sales force.

Coast Czech Festival Gulf

The Gulf Coast Czech Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1 at Lodge 172, Pasadena, located at 3609 Preston Avenue in Pasadena.

The District Six Fall Meeting is set for Sunday, November 1, with Lodge No. 4, Halletsville and Lodge No. 68, Sweet Home as your hosts at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville which is located on FM 957.

We will begin registration, games and contests at 11 a.m. We will have the usual Wheel of Fortune and some new games and activities. Be sure to bring your entries for the Kolache, Quilt, and Needlework (new this year) contests. The festival opens at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday for socializing. A special program and meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be held at 3:30 p.m. There is no charge for this portion of the program. From 6 p.m. until midnight, there will be a battle dance featuring the polka and waltz music of the Vrazels Orchestra and the Central Texas Sounds in the Grand Ballroom.

Admission to the battle dance is $6 per person. Food and refreshments will be available from 2:30 until 11:30 p.m.

Taroky and dominoes will be played both days in the youth room.

At 9:30 a.m., the Lodge 88, Houston Choral Group will perform. At 10 a.m., the worship service will commence (both Ecumenical by Rev. Henry E. Beseda, and Catholic Czech Polka Mass by Rev. Joseph Hybner, with James Stryk and The Moonriders Band providing the polka music and the Polka Lovers Klub of America Choral Group leading the congregation in song Dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. for $5 per plate; children under 12 are $3 per plate.

Other Sunday performances include the Galveston County Singers and Accordion Band, the Parade of Costumes and a battle dance from 2 until 8 p.m., with music by the Bobby Jones Czech Polka Band and James Stryk and the Moonriders.

From District One A recent article from the Burleson County Tribune calls attention to John See, III and his participation in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets.

John, who is a member of Lodge 9, John See, HI Snook, was the 1986 State SPJST King. John is the grandson of the late John W. and Lillie See, Sr. of Snook and Mrs. Joe A. (Ella) Jakubik of Snook.

From the article: . . . By attending TAMU and joining company V-1, the only off-campus unit in the Corps, See has remained in Snook. He lives with his parents and still helps his father, John See, Jr., on the family farm ...

Although See is active in student life at TAMU, he credits the Corps with keeping him there, "If it hadn't been for the Corps, I don't know if I'd be at A&M right now, because they make you study," See said.

"They instill it in you to make good grades."

Being named Cadet Major and Commanding Officer of Company V-1 was just the crowning touch to an already stellar three years in the Corps of Cadets. See has received numerous accolades including Outstanding Freshman of V-1, Best Drill Sophomore of V-1, American Legion Army ROTC Scholastic Excellence Award, and First Battalion First Brigade Cadet Honor Board Representative.

"Even if I could go back and do it all over again, I'd go through the Corps," he said. "When I slip on those senior boots for Final Review, I'll know it's all been worth it."

Alan is a graduate of Rogers High School, Texas A&M University and the University of Texas Health Science Center medical school at Houston. He is a general surgery resident at the Good Samaritan Hospital.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Contributes to the Community Dear Readers, President Johnnie Krizan presided over our October meeting. Tammi Dobecka led the Pledge of Allegiance.

After corrections, the minutes were accepted as read. All reports were given and approved.

Brother George Straten gave the trustees report. The lodge bought 100 metal chairs. The membership approved the following donations: Ambulance fund: $100, Depot: $25, Fire Department: $50, Gazebo: $25, Library: $25.

The lodge also decided to match, up to $100, whatever lodge members donated towards the 100 Pennies Scholarship Program. They also donated to the Penelope Picnic, Tours Picnic, St Paul's Bazaar. The next trustees meeting in November 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz then gave her report. The youth recently visited Six Flags—the group included 15 young people and 14 adults. They also donated cakes to rest homes, to St. Paul's Women's Guild, and Tours church. They are currently making Christmas items for the rest home. The Halloween Party will be October 23 at 7:30 p.m. Celebrating a birthday this month is Sherrie Lenart.

On the sick list is Karen Kroll who had surgery.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the FAC report. Peggy announced that the lodge is collecting for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund. At the District III meeting, there will be a kolache and strudel contest, youth ornament contest, and a pumpkin carving contest. There will also be a "42" tournament and a volleyball tournament. Lunch costs at the meeting will be adults: two cans of food plus $1 and youth: 2 cans of food. The food will be donated to charity. Peggy also encouraged 100 Percent SPJST Families to send in their names to the Home Office.

The committee consisting of Brother Bill Skerik, Sister Peggy Dobecka, and Ernest Bezdek gave their report on the appreciation dinner. They suggested going to Heitmiller's on November 15.

President Krizan read the door prize winners. Brother George Straten won the $5 prize. Brother William Mikeska was drawn for the $10 progressive door prize and Sister Katherine Polansky was drawn for the $1 progressive door prize.

Other door prizes were donated by George Straten, Willie Mae Schuetz, Jerelene Lenart, the Youth Club, Christine Matus, Ruth Krizan, The Edward Hykels and the Bobby Dobeckas.

25, Ennis to Elect Officers on November 12 Lodge

Danny Zaidle was welcomed as a new member of Lodge No. 25. Also discussed was the District in Fall meeting which will be held at Sokol in Ennis, hosted by SPJST Lodge 135. Everyone is encouraged to attend. There will be a short business meeting and a whole lot of fun.

The big news is the upcoming dance on Saturday, November 21st. Johnnie I. Krajca, who hosts the Sunday Morning Polka Show on KBEC said that the Bobby Jones band is one of the hottest polka bands in South Texas.

We're hoping for a big crowd. Our hall has been busy with private bookings and this will be the first public polka dance we've had in a while. We hope to see a lot of familiar faces that haven't been by to see us lately. Dancing begins at 8:30.

Don't forget elections are coming up at our November 12 meeting at 8 p.m.

Please show up and cast your vote— you'll be doing that a lot in November.

47, Seaton Honors Former Editor Lodge

During the 1968 SPJST Convention, Rudolf J. Sefcik was elected editor of the Vestnik. He began his nearly 24 years in that position in 1969. His endeavors to serve our Society with fairness and professionalism have left a permanent mark in the minds and hearts of people in the SPJST family. Few people have such an opportunity to have an impact on history.

Sister Maxine Sefcik later joined her husband as secretary/assistant in producing the Vestnik.

To honor Brother and Sister Sefcik, Lodge 47 held a celebration to recognize their combined years of service. In addition to a plaque, a proclamation deeming Brother Rudy and Sister Maxine "Honorary Members" of Lodge 47, Seaton, was presented to them. After comments from both Brother and Sister Sefcik, a delicious meal was served.

A nice complement to the celebration were the two intricately decorated cakes baked by Sister Judy Pechal. The cakes displayed Brother Sefcik's first and last Vestnik issues.

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to Meet November 8 Lodge

Dear Members: The eleventh monthly meeting of the year is upon us and Lodge Karel Jonas will, again, have to change its meeting date from the first Sunday—the lst—to the second Sunday—the 8th—of November. This is due to the District VI Fall Meeting to be held on the first Sunday in Hallettsville. The convening time of the lodge meeting will be 2 p.m. and it will be held in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street in the lodge hall building.

At this point in time, the fraternal hour luncheon is scheduled to start after the business meeting adjourns.

On October 4th, the fast Sunday, the monthly meeting convened at the set time of 2 p.m. With a quorum present, a couple of motions were made and passed.

One of these motions was to sell off 100 of the folding chairs belonging to the lodge. There was a price and limit set.

Members are allowed to purchase a MAXIMUM of ten (10) chairs, ONLY. For prices, interested members are advised to contact a lodge officer and/or come to the meeting. The discussion on the sale of the lodge hall has been moved to a later date.

The fraternal hour luncheon convened promptly after the meeting. All food and beverages were donated by the members.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the entertainment report. For our November 15th meeting, we will serve snacks. So, everyone is asked to bring snacks. We will decorate the hall for Christmas on December 2, starting at 6 p.m.

The SPJST Christmas Party will be catered by Michna's with guest plates costing $7. There has been a change in the beer and soda.

The doors will open at 3 p.m. and the Happy Hour will start at 4 p.m. (free beer and soda) will be served.

Sister Mary A. Langlotz gave the FAC report. Our last game night was October 12th with 30 members present. The next game night will be November 9th. This will be the last game night for this year.

There will be no game night in December.

So, please come and enjoy our games and bring a snack.

Sister Jeanette Smith gave the Cheer and Condolence report. Get well cards were sent to Evelyn Seith, Regina Adamcik, Louis Veselka and Raymond Helona.

A sympathy card was sent to Thomas and Jane Galler. She also read a thank you note for Louis Veselka.

They will also make cheer baskets for the shut-in members and deliver them during the Christmas holidays.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported that there were 14 members and five adults present at the meeting. They will have a cake walk during the dance on November 14. They will also sponsor a game booth instead of participation in the Christmas Jaycee Parade. They will have a tee-shirt contest, pumpkin carving contest ar A a Christmas ornament contest at the Di! ct III meeting.

Gladys also asked for the 1993 Y.A.D. to be held at Lodge 66. The motion was made and seconded. So, the Y.A.D. for 1993 will be held at Linden Hall.

There were donations made to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund by Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek in memory of Ira Niswanger and by Charlie and Irene Meullar in memory of Leslie Dungan.

Brother George Pauling gave a report on the District HI Meeting which will be held in Ennis.

Members, please remember that elections will be held on the third Sunday of November—November 15 at 2 p.m. This is your lodge and your opportunity to have a say so in your officers. Please plan to attend the November meeting.

80, Holland Reports on Activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: The October meeting of Holland SPJST was called to order by President Harold Rohde. Brother Rohde asked all to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members.

Secretary-Treasurer Glen Latham read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as read. Brother Glen reported all committee reports turned into him before the meeting. All are going well.

Brother Rohde then gave a report on the Garage Sale held at the hall on October 3, 1992. Everyone had a great time and there was a fine turn out. Door prize winners for each hour included Isabell Cameron, Betty Hill, Brenda Wolf, Gay Rohlack, Rick Benner, and Micky Jarolik. They money tree winner was Joyann Benner. Brother Rohde thanked everyone who worked and plans are being made to have another one next year.

Brother Glen stated that work on the restrooms was progressing well and that everything should be complete in the near future.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, 1992, the SPJST and the Holland American Legion will celebrate ten years of social evenings together. We invite everyone out to the hall on this special occasion. The brotherhood and fraternalism we have had and will continue to have with the American Legion is great. Together we have accomplished a great deal in the Holland community. In other business, it was announced that the Spring District II meeting will be held in Holland on Sunday, March 28, 1993.

81, Needville Elects 1993 Officers November 15

Lodge

Twenty-nine members and one guest attended the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 81, held Sunday, October 18, 1992. At 12 noon, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner. The lodge furnished the entree of ham and sausage and the members brought a colorful and tasty variety of vegetables, salads and desserts. Our thanks to all who brought the food and special thanks to Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall and Mary Werner. Willie Mae baked the ham and Mary delivered the sausage, and also prepared salmon croquettes.

At 1 p.m., President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Sister Willie Mae Kuykendall, we observed a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Sister Tillie Strempel. Sincere sympathy is extended to her family. May she rest in peace.

President Macha welcomed two new members of Lodge 81. They are Walter and Geraldine Anderson, who are transfers from nearby Fairchilds. Welcome to our lodge family, Walter and Geraldine.

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the September meeting and the financial secretary's minutes. Both were approved as read. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was also approved as read. Due to the absence of Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel, Sister Kuykendall reported on the Special Fund activities for the month. Brother

Gilbert and Sister Benita Walzel are enjoying a fall vacation in Europe, visiting Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Young Jacob Wright is doing fine at home after a brief hospital stay due to respiratory difficulties. Best wishes also go to our social member Lydia Hortman in the SPJST Rest Home here in Needville.

As there was no unfinished or new business to transact, President Macha called on our guest, District V Director Louis Hanus. After an absence of several months, it was good to have Brother Hanus with us again. He reported on the July meeting of the Supreme Lodge and the good showing Lodge 81 sales representatives made in new sales of insurance policies. His travels had taken him to the meeting of the Texas Fraternal Congress and to a Rodeo Fest in Pasadena, Texas, where he rode in the parade with the SPJST Royalty. Then on to San Antonio to attend the convention of the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Brother Hanus told us that the newly elected president of the National Fraternal Congress is from San Antonio and very involved in the organization "Habitat for Humanity," whose members donate their time to help build homes for qualifying families. One well-known member of Habitat, sometimes seen with hammer in hand, is former President Jimmy Carter. The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 81 in November falls on Sunday, the 15th. This is a very important date as it also marks the Annual Meeting.

Election of officers for 1993 will take place on November 15 and we need a big turnout. Come and take part! Become an ACTIVE member! As usual, we will begin with dinner at 12 noon. The lodge will furnish the meat, with members bringing a vegetable and a dessert. Benita Walzel will prepare the entree—roast beef and gravy.

All members should be keeping an accurate count of hours spent in fraternal work. These charts will be due on December 31, 1992.

At the recent Fort Bend County Fair, member Clinton Jablonski was lucky and managed to cross the finish line of the Calf Scramble still holding on to the calf he had caught. He is a freshman at the Terry High School in Rosenberg and a member of the Terry FFA Chapter. For his chapter project, he will be raising a lamb.

Sister City Report—Sister Bessie Petr reported on the progress of the planned trip to Bmo. November 2 is the next meeting.

New Business Salaries for lodge officers were discussed; other topics discussed included lodge memorials and the Fratemalist of the Year. Nominated for this award from our lodge is Sister Bessie Petr—congratulation to you, Sister Petr.

The charity project was also discussed as were the left over garage sale items and where to donate them. If you have any old eye glasses, please bring them to the lodge to be collected for the needy.

Our Christmas Party will be on December 19. We will open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. and a program at 8:30 p.m. Lodge 130 is asked to join us for the occasion.

The 70th Party will be on December 1, beginning with a reception at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. The menu will consist of breast of chicken, a fruit bowl, rolls, dessert and drink. Honorees are guest of the lodge. Others need to make reservations by December 1 by calling Sister Olson at 1-223-1801. Price is $6 for adults and $3.50 for children. Bring your friends who—no doubt—will want to stay for the dancing, too!

Speaking of dancing, on November 7, Alpine Village will play for a dance. On November 21, the popular Country Boys will be entertaining from 8:30 until 12:30 p.m. On December 5, the Ennis Czech Orchestra will be performing at our lodge and on December 31, it will be New Year's Eve fun with the Mynarcik's.

Adult tickets for this dance are $8 for adults with reservations or $10 per ticket at the door. Tickets for ages 13-17are $3 with reservations or $3.50 at the door.

Application forms can now be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas 77008, and returned to the office before December 31, 1992.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years and file an application during the senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1993.

88, Houston Birthday Club News Lodge

The Birthday Club meeting was opened by President Lowrina Lindemann at 11:30 a.m. on October 14, 1992 with the roll call. Secretary Rita Alexander read the September minutes which were approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report and also announced that Tilly Bily gave a $20 donation to our club which was appreciated very much.

Thank you, Tilly.

President Lowrina announced that we will have a catered Christmas dinner on December 2. The board members and spouses and the lodge officers of Lodge 88 and their spouses will be invited.

They will serve turkey, dressing, gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and bread. Guests will have to pay for the dinner—which is very reasonably priced.

The cooks for October were Bessie Lero—chairman, Josephine Bishop and Edna Troehleich, who cooked for Julia Kinniman, who is in the hospital with her sick son.

We have a number of sick sisters.

They are: Martha Baxter, one of our most valuable members, who is in the hospital again; Anna Hoffman has been ill for sometime and is surely missed; Anna Elzner is at home now and doing fine. She promised me she'll be back with us soon; Josephine Pumila has been in the hospital with multiple fractures in her leg. They kept her in therapy for so long, but she is at home, slowly recuperating. We are so happy that you will be

Lodge 88, Houston Activity Report Ed and Ellen Miculka spent a week in Laughlin, Nevada, and after they came home, they rested for a few days and decided to go to Fayetteville, Tennessee and visit with Ellen's brother Bob Holley.

Her sister, Betty, and husband, Jim Renearson from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, met them in Tennessee. They had a nice visit—a family reunion. Betty and Jim's son, Gary, also spent a few days. While there, they went sightseeing at Chattanooga to such places as Lookout Mountain, Rock City and several Civil War battlefields. Ellen said they had an enjoyable trip.

Doris Knapick's son Jimmie Peck from Prattsville, Alabama is in Houston on a business trip, so he's visiting his mother, Doris, for several days. I know that must be a lift for her.

My children, Arlene and Alfred Marshall, are on their way back from Salt Lake City, Laughlin and Las Vegas, Nevada. I will certainly enjoy hearing about their trip.

Another group from Lodge 88 went on a tour to Branson, Missouri. Four couples from the lodge went. They were Franklin and Aleda Bravenec, Jake ad Louise Jacobs, Milert and Evelyn Antridge and Bennie and Stacie Kocich.

I can't forget Micky Rice—she went too, but lives in Swiss Alps now. Bennie Kocich said it was one of the nicest trips.

They saw many shows and lots of singing on the bus. "It was not boring," like my little grandson would say.

On October 12, Lodge 88 had a monthly meeting. President Jerry Ermis called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.

After the flag-bearers presented the flags, Secretary Mildred Holeman read the names of deceased members: Wallace Manning, Harvey Lee, and Charles Faigle. All of the officers were present, except for Helen Hegwood and Ellen Miculka.

The minutes were read and approved.

There was no correspondence.

New members were accepted and President Jerry Ermis announced the Octolper 25 Czech Day. Don't miss that special day. Turkey and dressing heads the list of all the activities and entertainment that is planned for that day. If it rains, come anyway, as a rain is a "shower of blessing," and should give us all a good appetite.

Secretary and Treasurer. Shirley Stonaker always has a good accurate report on our finances. F.A.C. Homer Alexander again had a lovely report. He stated that he had collected 33,824 pairs of eye glasses. He also announced the upcoming tournaments.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney received a beautiful letter from the Muscular Dystrophy organization. They wanted the youth to know how much they appreciated their help. Barbara is planning a Halloween Party for the youth from Lodge 142 and Lodge 88 at 7:30 p.m. on Halloween night.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Viola Cox reported a good September. Ray Jurecka's Band will play on Saturday, October 31st. Do come—he plays such beautiful soothing music.

This band always reminds me of Ernie, my late husband. He always liked the band and engaged them for our parties.

Margaret Allbritton, the Blue Room manager, announced that Sunday, December 20 is the Blue Room Party from 4 until 9 p.m. There will be cocktails, dinner and dancing with music

by Donnie Wavra. Tickets are $12.50 per person and will be on sale in the Lodge Office from November 6 until December 14. This will be close to Christmas, so make your plans now.

President Lowrina Lindemann reported for the Birthday Club, and also asked for pastry for Czech Day, which is appreciated very much.

Tom Marsh reported for the Men's Club prize drawing, since President Ed Miculka was on a trip. The prize drawing will be wonderful, as the prizes are valuable. Tom also gave the auditing report.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported about the fence repair. The

fences are damaged by careless drivers and is very costly to the lodge. He also reported that the fire insurance demands emergency lights need to be installed.

President Ermis asked the Ruels and Regulations Committee to meet and have a report for the November meeting.

Josephine Pflughaupt, scholarship chairman for Lodge 88 asked the high school graduates to take notice, if they want a scholarship.

Sisters Anna Hoffman, Josephine Pumilia and Martha Baxter are on the sick list. Keep these and others on your minds. They need our prayers.

Bill Souchek stated that 34 members are in his Czech Class. I should be one of them, as I would like to understand his jokes in Czech.

Bonnie Cox was the queen in 1967 and she wrote a letter to our 1992-1993 Royalty. DYC Marie Stayton read the letter to us, as it was greatly appreciated and a nice gesture by Bonnie. Marie also announced the Fraternal Congress in San Antonio on October 17, in which our Royalty Queen Lindsey Michalak and Paul Pflughaupt took part.

107, Floresville Members Take Notice Lodge

In my newsletter last month, I reminded all the members of the change in meeting dates. This is to again remind you that our November meeting will again be held on the first Sunday in November which is November 1st. Please note the change of date and make an effort to attend your lodge meeting.

Our F.A.C. would like a monthly report of your fraternal activities, so try to remember to list all of them and then bring them to our November meeting.

177, Academy Meets November 11 to Elect Officers

The last regular meeting was held on October 14. Lodge President Otis Beck called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the members and they remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our departed member Charles Ralston. All officers were present. The minutes of the September meeting were approved as read by Secretary Kathy Fritz. All other reports were read and approved.

Libbie Bartek reported that a sympathy card was mailed to the Charles Ralston family. Mrs. Margie Whitehead is in ICU at Scott and White ad also Zachary Esparza in back in ICU at Scott and White. Please keep both of these families in your prayers.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator J.C. Johnson reminded the membership of the 100 Percent Family Certificates and also

the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. 100 Percent Family certificates were presented to the Robert Fritz Family and also the Scott Benson Family. Celebrating birthdays during the month were Bill Johnson and Jackie Beck. Ray and Amalia Ybarra celebrated their 54th anniversary. Our Christmas party was set for December 9.

More details will be in the Vestnik next month. The food committee was named as Bobby Fritz, J.C. Johnson and Jackie Beck.

Two new members were voted on and accepted. They are Wilma and Woodrow Bailey. We welcome you both to our lodge.

Dear Members, Lodge 180, Burleson held their meeting on October 6, 1992 with a nice crowd present. The trustee meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and followed by standing for a moment of silence for our departed members and friends, especially for Albert Boenisch After the trustee meeting, the regular monthly meeting resumed. Roll call of officers was answered by all being present.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Hartgraves.

After one correction, the minutes were voted to stand as read.

After the meeting, the door prizes were won by Carol Hilcher and John Hilcher.

The meeting adjourned to a nice dinner and fellowship.

Friendship Club of Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends, Our President Jo Prochaska called our meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member, Albert Boenisch.

The minutes, read by Secretary Merel Kovar, were approved after a minor correction and Lydia Alholm's treasurer's report was approved. Anna Johnson gave the Sunshine report on all cards sent.

Worth Ladies Circle Fort

The October 13th meeting of the Ladies Circle met with President Clara Cohen presiding. The meeting opened with the song "Beer Barrel Polka."

Guests attending were Mildred Knapik, Betty Alcorn, Karen Barrett and new son, Ryan, and Ma Lu LaPlante.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was also filed•as read.

The Sunshine Chairman gave a report on cards sent out. Several thank you notes were read. She also reported that Art Gillis has had knee surgery and Herminia Cihacek was involved in a car accident but no injury occurred.

Hostesses for December will be Anna Lesikar, Betty Billington, Jo Prochaska, and Alma Anderson with a donation from Catherine Kosarek.

In new business, the president appointed a nominating committee for the 1993 officers. They are Rose Jaworski, Herminia Cihacek and Florence Greer. In other new business, there was a discussion on our November luncheon. The final decision was made to go to Red Lobster Restaurant on November 10.

Reservations would be made at least one week in advance with Liz at 838-0370, Kitty, at 834-3947 and Frances at 8349052. These will report to Clara Cohen so she can contact the restaurant.

For the December 8th meeting, we are asked to bring a $3 exchange gift.

Turkey, dressing and ham plus vegetables and desserts will be on the menu.

Birthday honorees were Mary Windham, Mary Cihacek, Estelle Hurtik, Louise Oujesky, Millie Wruble, Mary Palachek, Dick Durham, Bill Kosarek, Frank Tesar and J.C. Waters.

Door prizes were won by Julia Dueser, Flora Koci, Frances Laux, Catherine Kosarek and Aurora Maldino.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Report Dear Members and Friends, Our last meeting was held on October 11 with a fair attendance.

The Youth took cakes to the rest home on October 7.

On October 4, the youth members and parents and lodge members went to Six Flags and they all had a good time. We had 15 young people and 14 minutes go to six Flags.

The Youth Club made donations to St. Martin's Church and to St.Paul's Wom­ en's Guild in Gerald.

We are currently working on Christ­ mas items for the rest home and need help from all of the members!

The Youth Club is having its Hal­ loween Party on October 23 with hot dogs and all the trimmings. Everyone is invited to bring something that goes with hot dogs. So, come out and have fun.

SPJST State Royalty Participates in Pasadena Rodeo Parade On Saturday, September 26, 1992, State Royalty-King Paul Pflughaupt, Queen Lindsey Michalak, Duke Darrell Havemann and Duchess Tamara Williams, represented the SPJST in the Pasadena, Texas Rodeo Parade. Approx­ imately 40 youth, parents, and District V Youth Leaders marched the one and one­ half mile parade route behind the royalty, cheering and chanting.

The royal couple greeted spectators from a beautiful 1992 gray Chevrolet pickup, donated by Knapp Chevrolet of Houston. Driving the truck was Larry Pflughaupt, with passenger and first time parade participant, District V Director Louis Hanus. At the conclusion of the parade, the participants met at Ryan's for lunch and more fun, compliments of Dis­ trict V. We would like to extend a warm "thank you" to Gene Pikes and Knapp Chevrolet for their gracious donation and assistance to our SPJST youth. We would also like to thank all the SPJST youth club participants, parents, and lead­ ers for taking part. Also taking time from their busy schedules were the District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton and The District Director Louis Hanus. Features CESAT Sponsors Czech Photo Exhibit, Lecture Dr. Erik Sefcik, curator of the Silesian Museum in Opava, Czechoslovakia, will arrive in College Station, Texas on November 2, 1992 for a three-week visit to Texas sponsored by the Czech Ex-Stu­ dents Association of Texas (CESAT).

Dr. Sefcik, who will be greeted by Dr. Clinton Machann, Texas A&M English professor, will bring his collection of his­ toric photographs showing scenes of village life in eastern and northern Moravia.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Report Dear Members, The October 7, 1992 Youth Club meeting of Lodge 88 was called to order at 7: 15 p.m. by President Paul Pflughaupt. There were 22 members, 11 adults, and two guests present. Secretary Kristy Sokol read correspondence from the MDA telethon thanking the youth for participating in the annual event. The treasurer gave her report and we wel­ comed one new member, Michael Gray.

Ms. Linney gave her report. She told us that for our social this month, we were going to go to the Imax theatre and then have a picnic lunch. She also told us about Czech Day on the 25th of October.

She informed us that our ornaments were going to be judged on that day. Then on October 31, 1992, District V is going to have their Halloween party hosted by Lodge 142. We discussed that for our Christmas project this year, we are going to raise money for an area foster home.

Our DYC Marie Stayton told us about the Camp T-Shirt Contest for this year.

She also thanked everyone who came out and participated in the Pasadena Rodeo Parade along with the State King and Queen.

There was only one birthday for the month and that was Penny Patton. The meeting was then adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

CESAT Awards

Scholarships This summer, the Czech Ex-Students Association (CESAT) awarded university scholarships and aid for Czech language study to three young people in our state.

Micek Scholarships for $1,000 each for the 1992-1993 academic year were awarded to Lydia Blakeley Fiedler of Austin and to Susan Kolar, also of Austin for Czech language studies at the University of Texas. The Micek Scholarship Fund was established as a bequest of Dr. Edward Micek, a former professor of the Czech language at the university.

An award of $300 in the form of a stipend for study in the summer Czech language program at the Agricultural College in Prague, C.S.F.R. was awarded to Benedict Cepak of Waco. This summer program was organized by Thadious Polasek of Schulenberg and consists of three weeks of schooling plus educational tours and excursions in Prague and other parts of Bohemia, Moravia an Slovakia.

In the April 1992 meeting of CESAT, it was reported that Dr. Svatova Jacobson, retired U.T. Czech language professor had deeded her extensive library of Czech books, magazines and periodicals to the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Kevin Hannan, a U.T. graduate student was awarded a $2,000 Maresh scholarship for the purpose of cataloging these books and papers for storage and library use in a section of the U.T. library.

The Dr. Henry R. Maresh Scholarship Fund was established by CESAT in 1989 as a result of a generous gift of $27,000 from Mrs. Thelma Maresh in honor and memory of her late husband who was a prominent Houston physician and an avid supporter of Czech activities and Czech culture preservation in Texas -Submitted by Charles J.
