Three new scholarships

Scholarship drive off to rousing start The first week of the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive got off to a flying start. By the end of the day on October 8, $1,502.05 had been collected.

"We are pleased with this wonderful support," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. The amount received already translates to three new scholarships to be awarded next year.

"Overall, our goal is to raise $8,000.

This would be enough to provide 16 additional scholarships," says Brother Leshikar.

Getting Back to the Basics Last week, we attempted to identify some of the common challenges facing our local lodges-the challenge to attract members to meetings and functions; the challenge to meet escalating operating expenses and the challenge to maintain a spirit of fraternalism, brotherhood and unity. We also acknowledged that some of our local lodges were doing well and identified some of the things these thriving lodges had in common-clear goals and objectives; effective leadership and good communication between the members.

But how can any of this information really help to stimulate activity at your local lodge? Really, it depends on you and what you are willing to do to make things happen. As previously noted, this is much easier said than done. Even at this relatively unseasoned stage of your editor's service to the Society, he has heard it expressed many times that a high percentage of our membership are not very interested in contributing their time and energy to the SPJST. But whose fault is it? How much time do we regularly devote to explaining to our membership what the SPJST is all about, who its founders were and what sacrifices they took to put it on its feet?

As many of our older members know, our local lodges would not be here today were it not for our founders, who in 1897, laid the foundation of our Society. ***

Where the Spark Came From To better understand our Society's founders and why they established the SPJST, it is important that we know a little about where they came from.

First, let's take a look at the region they came from-Czechoslovakia-a relatively small section of central Europe, rich in natural resources and often referred to in song and poetry as "Zemsky Raj To na Svete," or "Paradise on Earth."

Because it was so well-endowed by natural resources, the country was perhaps the most progressive and highly developed country in central Europe. With the establishment of the first university, Charles University, in Prague in 1348, it also became the center of higher education. For these reasons, and others, Czechoslovakia became an object of envy and the target of attacks and assaults by its neighbors. These attacks culminated with the battle of White Mountain in 1620 when the country was thoroughly defeated and crushed. The nation ceased to exist as a nation and all its people were either killed or sent into exile and its wealth went to its conquerors.

Into Germany, Russia, England and the United States came the exiled Czechs.

The first came after the Battle of White Mountain to New Amsterdam, which is now known as New York. Many others soon followed.

They brought with them the spirit of liberty that had been crushed at White Mountain. Once here, they took great pride in this country which gave them the privilege to determine their own destiny and to bind together to achieve even greater accomplishments.

Society With a Purpose The SPJST was founded as a fraternal insurance company that operates on a fraternal basis at almost cost. It is a very solvent organization. Throughout its existence, the SPJST has fulfilled its financial obligations to its members and kept pace with the insurance and fmancial services industry.

Further, the SPJST was organized for installing fraternalism and patriotism into the hearts of its members. It is a nonsectarian organization. Its mottoes are Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood. It was always an American institution from its inception. It was founded in the Czech language because the founders knew that language best.

As an institution, the SPJST continues to emphasize the importance of the Czech language and cultural activities.

We do this because we are proud of our heritage. We cherish our language and other traditions as gifts bestowed upon us by our forebearers.

Throughout the history of the Society, members have worked hard to establish the SPJST's reputation as a proactive fraternal organization-with local lodges sponsoring an incredible range of family-oriented activities, including community service projects, dances, picnics, plays, orchestras, choral and dance groups.

Over the years, this venue has continually expanded to include many new activities and academic enrichment programs. geared to the needs and tastes of the younger members of the Society.

These activities included camping trips, youth achievement days and royalty competitions. ***

Fraternalism-A Thing of the Future Which bring us to the present. All that we are today is due to the past and present generations of fraternalists working together for the common good of the Society. Was their time and energy worth effort? Absolutely. Will it be worth your time and energy tomorrow?

Absolutely.

Fraternalism is a thing of the future.

Contrary to a sometimes expressed opinion, your editor believes that lodge work can be an enjoyable endeavor, particularly when it is streamlined to be in tune with modern times. Benevolent work can provide a satisfying social outlet for the entire family. As your editor has witnessed, many friendships created in the local lodges have lasted a lifetime. *** There's More to the Story Your editor's brief historical reference in today's editorial hardly scratches the surface of Czechoslovakia's long and colorful history. For those of you who are interested in learning more about Czechoslovakia and its contribution to European civilization and democracy, the SPJST Museum has a limited number of copies of J.V. Polisenky's interesting History of Czechoslovakia in Outline available for $4 each.

Supreme Lodge Hosts Fish Fry In an effort to build team spirit and unity, Members of the Supreme Lodge hosted a fish fry for Home Office employees and their families on Monday, October 5, 1992. The function was held at Glaser's Catfish Farm, a short drive east of Temple, near Buckholts. The directors were in Temple October 5 and 6 for the quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge.

District Updates District Four Fall Fun Day at Lodge 29, Rowena October 17 Dear Brothers and Sisters, SPJST District IV will hold its fall Fun Day Meeting at SPJST Lodge No. 29, Rowena on October 17, 1992.

An interesting day of entertainment and good food will be featured. The new Vestnik editor, Brian Vanicek, will be present. He says that he is looking forward to the visit and getting a chance to get better acquainted with all the members of District Four. Supreme Lodge officers also are invited to attend.

The Youth Club has been busy making decorations and will be involved in the various activities. All members within the ten lodges in District Four are cordially invited to attend.

Minutes of SPJST District III Spring Meeting April 26, 1992 Lodge 66, Elm Mott, Texas The District III Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott, Texas.

District III Vice President George Pauling welcomed those present as our President Justine Yeager was out of town, traveling in Europe.

Tammye Dobecka and Jessica Tieres led the reciting of the "Pledge of Allegiance" to the flag of the United States of America.

Brother Jim Locke, Lodge 66 president, welcomed everyone to Linden Hall.

District Second Vice President Gordon Hubenak read the names of the departed members of each lodge. The youth of District III presented a memorial service by putting flowers in a vase for each name read. A moment of silence was then observed.

District Secretary Carol Sanders minutes of the fall meeting had been printed in the Vestnik and the delegation voted not to read them and approved them as printed.

District Treasurer Albert Banik was not present at the time of the meeting.

Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas as introduced and her reported on the 1991 SPJST year stating what an excellent year it was. He spoke about the SPJST Workshop which was held in Elgin, Texas and related a story about Lodge No. 172, Pasadena, Texas.

It was organized during the 60s. They had worked hard to get a lodge building similar to Elm Mott. They struggled along until 1978, sending out letters to local lodges requesting money, that they were starting to build and would accept any donation that would be offered. Lodge No. 177, Academy, south of Temple, sent them $1,000 for their building fund.

Lodge No. 172 is now very successful and today presented a check back to Lodge No. 177, Academy in the amount of $1,000 which they had donated to their previous building fund. Brother Mikulas stated that this was "Fraternalism in

Action." Brother Mikulas also noted that the SPJST in 1991 netted after expenses, $1,300,000. He stated that refunds to members was $600,000 and refunds to lodges was approximately $175,000. He further noted that the directors authorized a special refund in 1991 where the SPJST gave back $5 for every application written by your sales representatives. This helps our local lodge system. He reported that SPJST is selling IRAs and non-IRAs and complies with all regulations of the Internal Revenue. He suggested that members check the Vestnik for mortgage loan rates.

Brother Mikulas stated that there is approximately $44 million invested in corporate bonds and over $30 million in mortgage loans. He stated that an independent audit had begun January 1 and would be completed before the convention. It is a new law that independent audits are required by certain insurance companies. This is in addition to the Sate Board audit. In 1992 we will be audited

According to the minutes of the officers meetings, the change was made beginning in September, 1990, in Danbury, as the grounds were not available on Sunday. In September 1991, the fall meeting was on a Sunday. This past meeting was held again on Saturday. The district officers work with the hosting lodge and availability of the facilities. We also want to thank Brother Leonard Mikeska for bringing gifts from the Home Office and all of those of you who brought pastries. It gave us such a nice selection.

We had four youth clubs—from lodges 88, 142, 172 and 196—that put up tables to display and sell their handmade items.

Some of the items were really very interesting. Hope your clubs made some extra money.

Our State Royalty King Paul Pflughaupt, State Royalty Queen Lindsey Michalak, and State Duchess Tamara Williams were there to greet us.

Thank you to Erich Zuch and John Buri for the presentation of colors. We also want to say thank you to John Buri for playing some great songs on his accordion.

I might also mention that we had a special guest at our meeting from Czechoslovakia—a great nephew of Victor Janakand he spoke a few words.

Finally, we want to say thank you to Lodge 196 for hosting the Family Fun Day. Let us all remember to support our youth. They are our leaders of tomorrow.

Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172 to Host Heritage Meeting The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting on Saturday, October 31, 1992 at the SPJST Lodge Rozkvet, No. 172, in Pasadena in conjunction with the Sixth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival.

A fellowship hour will start at 2:30 p.m.

The business portion of the meeting will start at 3:30 p.m.

Everyone who has an interest in Czech history, customs, tradition or Czech family genealogy is cordially invited. Members and guests are encouraged to bring and display their family histories or other items which they feel will be of interest.

The festival activities will start at 6 p.m. Saturday night with a battle dance to the music of the Central Texas Sounds and the Vrazels Orchestra.

SPJST Salutes 100 Percent Families With seven districts and 118 active lodges, the SPJST depends heavily on family participation to prosper and maintain a spirit of fellowship. In appreciation of that support, the Supreme Lodge introduced its "100 Percent SPJST Family" program in September. Through letters to local lodges and articles in the Vestnik, 100 percent families were encouraged to report their 100 percent families to the SPJST Supreme Lodge. To date, that response has been great.

Attention 100 Percent Families An addition has been made to the recognition program for 100 percent families.

All families may send in a photo of their family which will be put in a photo album by lodge order. This photo album will be on display in the museum.

The reason for this is that we are receiving photos of the 100 percent families and cannot publish all of them. Only the new 100 percent SPJST families will be published in the Vesmik. All other

family photos will be put in a photo album in the museum.

The definition of a new family is that this family became 100 percent on or after January 1, 1992.

We are now encouraging all 100 percent families to mail us a photo of their family if they desire to do so.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville Hosts Lickskillet Activities Dear Brothers and Sisters, We would like to extend an invitation to everyone to attend the upcoming Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's Lickskillet Activities scheduled for October 17 and 18, 1992 at the SPJST Hall The program includes a barbecue and bean cook-off, volleyball, horseshoe pitching, and an all-classes Fayetteville High School Reunion hosted by the Class of 1942. There will also be a dance from 7 until 11 p.m. with music by the Jim Rohde Band.

There will be a parade on Sunday, October 18 starting at 10 a.m. The Jim Rohde Band and Fayette Czech Singers will entertain while a barbecue beef and sausage meal is served. An auction is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Arts and crafts and food booths will be on the square both Saturday and Sunday.

4, Hallettsville Reports on Activities

Lodge

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, September 20, 1992 at the Rotary Club Pavilion at 2 p.m. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led the pledge to the flag assisted by Elizabeth Vahalik.

Resolutions of sympathy were ready by Vicky Zak for our departed members, Hermina Vasek, Eugene Mikush, Sr. and Arnold J. Zabransky.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holly read the minutes to the July and August meetings which were approved. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her usual report and also reported on Family Day. President Vahalik thanked everyone for their cooperation and help in making Family Day held in August a success. FAC Gaye Galetka gave an informative report on the upcoming SPJST activities.

Elsie Mascheck reported on the games held at the Stevens Convalescent Center.

The members that assisted were: Ida Neubauer, Victoria Zak, Evelyn Holy, Leona Miculka, Jo Ann Matula, Margaret and Elsie Mascheck.

A short discussion was held on the District VI Fall Social to be hosted by our lodge and Sweet Home. A letter will be sent to each lodge from the district secretary with the day's activities. It will be held Sunday, Nov. 1 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville.

Youth Leader Jeanette Bender reported on the youth club's activities.

Nicholas Vahalik was recognized as placing first in Foods, Ages 6-8, at the State Y.A.D. in Temple.

A motion was made, seconded and passed that we book the Hallettsville Youth Center for the 06tober through February lodge meetings. The meeting was then adjourned. Lunch was served

with President Vahalik saying the prayer.

July, August and September birthdays were honored. Those present with birthdays were: Gaye Ann Galetka, Susan Siptak, Jeanette Bender, Karen Bender, Mary Matula, Annie Vahalik, Patsy Zabransky and Ervin Holy. Winner of the birthday cake baked by Margaret Smotek was Gaye Ann Galetka.

Door prize winners were: Adult— Erwin Holy and Youth—Kristen Bender.

6, Cottonwood Reviews Westfest Activities

Lodge

Dear Readers, President Johnnie Krizan presided at our September meeting. Tammi Dobecka led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert and Irene Schienenz were our guests. The reports were all given and approved. Thank you notes were read from Sister Bessie Velek family and Brother Mike Maznec The membership stood in silent respect for our departed Brother Mike Mazanec.

We had one new member—Elaine Mrkos.

The Westfest committees all gave their thank you to all who helped in any way. The membership decided to store our Westfest booth at Westfest if there was room there. The lodge sold our wooden chairs and decided to buy 100 metal chairs as replacements.

FAC Robert Dobecka reported that we will go to the SPJST Museum at a later date. The District III meeting will be October 25 at Ennis. Brother Dobecka thanked the Young Farmers for their help with the booth.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz gave the youth report. They made kolaches during the month. They went to State Y.A.D. Celia Dobecka received first place in Science and Handicrafts and Tommie Dobecka received second place in Sewing. They donated to the March of Dimes and to St. Mary's. Westfest was a success and Sister Schuetz thanked everyone for their. help.

They are going to start working on Christmas items. Celebrating birthdays in September are Robert Lenart, Amy Hromadka and Ernie Kolar. The youth are selling Christmas cards.

Get well cards were sent to Brothers Cyrill Surcek, Andrew Wachsman, Edward Hykel, Sisters Karen Kroll, Margaret Lenart, and Ester Malina.

A sympathy card was sent to the family of Sister Bessie Velek.

Brother Johnnie Krizan gave the Westfest report and thanked everyone.

The decision to hold an appreciation dinner was postponed.

Sister Christine Matus won the $5 door prize. Kristina Lenart was selected for the $10 door prize and Brother Bill Skerik won the $2 door prize. Since Sister Lenart was not present, we will have a $10 and $1 prize at our next meeting.

Other door prizes were donated by Bobby Dobecka's, Jerelene Lenart, Cyril

Surcek's, the Youth Club, Ruth Krizan, Robert Dobecka's, Willie Mae Schuetz, Bill Skerik's, Ernest Bezdek's and George Staten. Thewinners were Willie Mae Schuetz, Bill Skerik, Shirley Dobecka, Georgie Skerik, Christine Surcek, Joe Perkins, Barbara Hykel, Robert Dobecka, Ruth Krizan and Cyrill Surcek.

The meeting was adjourned until October 11 at 1 p.m.

President Johnnie Krizan presented a $100 scholarship from the Theresa Dobecka Scholarship fund.

24, Cyclone Holding "Big Sale" on November 7 Lodge

Lodge 24, Cyclone holds its third and final "Big Countywide Garage Sale" of the year on Saturday, November 7. Sale times will be from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Our lodge (Flag Hall) is located 10 miles east of Temple, off Highway 53.

Vendor spaces for the event will be $20 each. Sellers wanting to reserve a space may do so by calling (817)/9852228, 985-2354 or 985-2484. Vendors will be able to set up their booths on the Friday evening before the sale.

Our previous two sales have attracted a wide range of sellers, ranging from collectors, antique and craft dealers to people selling homemade foods, household items and farm equipment.

29, Rowena Hosts Heritage Society Meeting

Lodge

The Runnels, Concho, and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley met Sunday, September 27 at the SPJST Hall in Rowena at 2:30 p.m.

President Robert Mikeska brought the meeting to order with the leading of the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was then observed for departed members Ben J. Hejl of Ballinger and Felix Havlak of Rowena.

The minutes were read by Secretary Nancy Day. They were accepted as read.

The treasurer's report was unavailable.

President Mikeska announced that state membership dues have been increased to help defray the cost of the newsletter and other administrative costs.

Reports on publicity were heard.

Vice President Kokes reported on attending the State Heritage Society meeting in Deanville in April He stated that six members from Concho Valley attended this meeting.

A motion was made and seconded to pay for the rental of the hall.

President Mikeska praised the excellent work of Secretary Day in obtaining census records of 1880 and 1910. The 1890 census was destroyed by fire. The 1920 census will be added at a later date.

President Mikeska and Vice President Kokes assisted Mrs. Day in identifying

Czech names in the census. Members voted to have the census bound into book form when all of the records are available. Our next meeting will be held Sunday, November 22. This date was selected because December has too many conflicting dates. The meeting will be in the SPJST hall again. Election of 1993 officers will be held at this meeting. After the meeting a "pot luck" meal will be served.

Twenty-two members and two visitors were present. The two visitors from San Angelo were Alice Psencik Wilson and Debbie Lisoski. Both were especially eager to learn of their genealogy and of customs of the old country. Mrs. Lisoski's husband is of Polish ancestry, but had a Slavic grandmother, possibly of Czech origin.

Secretary Day moved that we adjourn the meeting. The motion was seconded and passed.

Czech tapes were played as members enjoyed delicious refreshments at the close of the meeting.

88, Houston Reports on Activities Lodge

On Sunday, September 6, the family of my late sister and late brother-in-law Tanta and John Hilsher and my children gave me a beautiful birthday celebration at the home of my daughter and her husband, Arlene and Al Marshall in Weimar. All the families were there and all of our students at Baylor, the University of Texas and Texas Texas A&M came—except Shirky and her little girl, Chi, who live in Fort Collins, Colorado. However, she called and we had a nice conversation. Anyway, there were 26 of us there. They had it a week early. It was supposed to be a surprise, but they finally told me, because they can't surprise me. They've tried that several times before and only once was it a complete surprise. I really appreciate these good children. Thank you!

Janet Raymond was so happy about her ninth great-grandchild and asked me to put it in my next letter. Little Courtney Leigh Johnson was born to Paula and Mark Johnson on September 21, 1992. She weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces. Paula is Janet's granddaughter. This sweet little girl is already an SPJST member. Congratulations from Lodge 88.

On September 14, we had a monthly meeting, so I'll mention a few highlights.

We had one death: Leonard Kulhanek.

We received correspondence from Leonard Kulhanek's family and a letter from Katherine Knapick, who has been ill, but is improving.

Wednesday, October 14, 1992--VESTNEK/9

Vice President Marcell Malak read the minutes since Secretary Mildred Holeman was on a trip to Las Vegas with a group: Helen and King "B" Hegwood, Neta Brewer and several others who Mildred didn't mention. On the way home, at the airport, Mildred said she had to borrow 50 cents so she could buy some popcorn— needless to say.

FAC Homer Alexander always does his part. On October 15 and 16th, he will have another Defensive Driving Course.

He is also working hard on getting used eye glasses, which helps so many people.

It's so wonderful that people work on constructive projects like that. Thanks, Homer, for a job well done.

I do urge all of you to come to our big Czech Day Celebration on October 25.

The Birthday Club is dear to my heart, so do help Lillie Spies, who will have a beautiful table of pastry. If you feel like bringing a cake, pie or kolaches, do so, as the Birthday Club would be delighted. It's one of our yearly projects, and that's one of the few money making projects we have throughout the year. Lillie has dependable ladies who help her.

If you have Czech costumes, wear them, as the parade is very pretty and puts the icing on the cake. Come one! Come all! It'll be a day well spent. Ask your family and friends to come join us.

Another big project is the Men's Club prize drawing, which has so many fine prizes—and just imagine-3 tickets for a $1 or a book of 16 tickets for $5. The 16th ticket is free. Let's do all we can for them, as we need their help to keep up all the ProPertY• Viola Cox, chairman of the Entertainment Committee reported a good month for August. The dances for this month are: Friday, October 16—Texas Brew; Saturday, October 17—Jodie Mikula, which is a polka dance; Saturday, October 24, Jack Melick "Piano Man," which is big band music, dress code applies; Sunday, October 25 is Czech Day and there will be a free dance with music by the Vrazels from 5 to 9 p.m; and on Saturday, October 31, Ray Jurecka will be playing.

Gene Barcak reported for the choral group and asked to practice with the orchestra on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Reports on Social Night by Willie Wehring and on the Birthday Club by Lowrina Lindemann followed.

Tom Marsh gave a report for the Men's Club, as President Ed Miculka and his wife Ellen were on a trip. I will tell you more about their trip in my next letter.

Tom also reported for the Auditing Committee.

Karl Lindemann, chairman of the board, announced that a great deal of work is being done on the floors.

Our known sick are Josephine Pumilla, and Richard Ehret. Ann Hoffman has had surgery and isn't doing too well. Bessie Dewer had eye surgery. Anna Elzner has been ill, but is getting stronger every day—she will be playing bingo soon. We also miss Lillian Finn, who has been such a faithful member but lives at the Bay and is too far to travel alone. Lillian has many good friends who will bring her to our functions—it's only for the asking. Lillian come see us for Czech Day—turkey and dressing. Ed Stang was in the hospital for a few days but is at home recuperating.

"Hang in there Ed." We certainly miss our faithful member Annie Vala, who is unable to, participate anymore.

130, Dallas Has a Busy Month Lodge

It seems that every September brings with it a lot of activity! And we at Lodge 130 were no exception. My husband Brother Gene and I started our month with a very pleasant vacation to Reno, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco.

Soon after returning, we prepared for our house guests from Roznov. Our only regret was that we didn't have enough time with our guests, although they seemed to enjoy their visit very much.

Special thanks are extended to the other hosts: C.J. and Betty Olson, Milton and Albina Vrla, Emil and Bessie Petr, Mike and Martha Frnka, Stanley and Martha Vrla, Jerry and Joann Manak, Ben and Lillie Jarma and Arnold Vrla.

Accolades go to the hard-working kitchen committee who worked so very diligently to prepare the wonderful meals we shared at Lodge 84: Wanda Petr (chairperson), Carlyn Ondrusek, Faye Rejcek, Rose Scott, Evelyn Salac, Bessie Tydlaska and Lilly Maxey. Please forgive me if I have overlooked anyone who helped make the Czechs' visit in Dallas a most memorable one.

Our regular monthly meeting September 21 was opened by President Keith Shinn with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Twelve members and two youth were present. New member Emily McElroy was announced by Brother Stanley Vrla.

Minutes and treasurer's report from the previous meeting were presented and approved. Correspondence included a letter from the Home Office informing us of the 100 Percent Family program and also giving us scholarship information for the coming year. Brother Arnold Vrla gave his report regarding local lodge dues.

Beseda Director Sister Martha Vrla read correspondence from the San Antonio Folklife Director thanking us for our contribution to their festival, and complimenting us on our preservation of our ethnic values. We also performed at Ft. Worth Lodge 92's September 12 celebration. As usual, our busy schedule has required several practices, and I would like to thank all the members who have so graciously hosted the group to hold practices in their homes—especially Richard and Helen Brown, Stanley and Martha Vrla and Keith and Nancy Shinn.

The October 3rd was a performance at Lynn Creek Park adjacent to Joe Poole Lake. Upcoming scheduled performances include the Hillside Academy in Garland on October 17th, Trader's Village on October 18th, November 17th at a school in Garland, and December 4th and 5th at the San Angelo Christmas at Old Fort Concho Festival. So we do give our dancin' shoes a nice workout!

Youth Leader Sister Suzanne Vrla announced that the planning for November 13, 14 and 15 campout at Cleburne State Park was being worked out, including a theme party for Saturday night.

Crafts will be available for members to work on and I am sure there will be endless domino games played. The youth club will be responsible for the Saturday lunch and the rest of the campers will be assigned their kitchen duty at the campout. Hopefully, the information sheet regarding the weekend will be available at the October meeting, held on the 21st.

Before I forget, special thanks to the members who created the very attractive banner for the Beseda dancers, the youth as well as the adults. The banner is reversible and is extremely attractive.

133, San Antonio Reports on Meeting

Dear Members and Friends, We hope that this report on Lodge 133, San Antonio finds all of you in good health and enjoying the cooler weather.

Our members met on September 20, 1992 at the St. Margaret Mary Activity center.

There were over thirty members present.

Reports from various committees were given. Sister Viola Kurtz, the anniversary chairman, reported that the following couples were celebrating September anniversaries. They were Tom and Dories Moczygemba, 49 years; Alvin and Frances Schimcek, 46 years; Ed and Frances Kappelman, 39 years and Billy and Frankie Campbell, 39 years. There were no deaths during the month of September. However, I regret to inform you, that as I was writing this report, I was informed that Brother Jerome Sliva passed away September 25 at 2 p.m.

Please remember him and his family.

There will be no October meeting since the District VII Fall Fun Day will be held on the third Sunday in Corpus Christi. As a result, the Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 133 was selected by Lodge 133. Sister Jarolyn Popp recommended that Brother Anthony Trilicek, the president of Lodge 133, be nominated because of his dedication to the SPJST and Lodge 133. A motion was made by Sister Frances Schimcek and seconded by Sister Grace Rohan, that Brother Anthony Trilicek be selected as the Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 133. The motion carried.

The nominating committee was named by the President and Vice President.

Serving on this committee will be Grace Rohan, Mary Popp and Joe Spacek.

Brother Emil Matula will represent Lodge133 in the Tarok Tournament on September 26th. Brother Alvin Schimcek and Sister Frances Schimcek were to also attend. However, Brother Alvin is presently in the hospital for observation.

We wish him the best.

It was decided that the members would share a Thanksgiving Dinner on November 15th. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. Turkey and dressing will be catered. The members are asked to bring a covered vegetable dish and a dessert.

Country Lodge 185 Meets Hill

Members of Hill Country Lodge No. 185 met at the Bavarian Village on September 17, 192 for their regular meeting.

President Roy Haag called the meeting to order at 8:10 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by youth club member Ross Reynolds. Roll call of officers

Minutes from the May 26th regular meeting and the June 18th meeting/picnic social were read by Secretary Susan Bohnenberger.

President Haag advised members that he had received application forms for the 1993 SPJST Scholarship. He noted that the lodge did not have any seniors this year but will have at least two eligible next year.

Secretary Bohnenberger reported on policy changes since the last meeting.

FAC Dorothy Pape reported that she has received forms to be completed by 100 Percent families for the Vestnik.

Upon request by President Haag, the nominating committee, Gladys Jasek, Diana Koehler and Kathleen Mills, presented their nominations for 1993 Lodge 185 officers: President—Roy Haag Vice President—Robert Popp, Jr. Second Vice President—Diana Koehler Secretary—Susan Bohnenberger Treasurer—Ernest Jasek Youth Leader—Theresa Haag Fraternal Activities Coordinator—Dorothy Pape As there were no additional nominations from the membership, Brother Arvin Brehm moved to accept the nominations as presented by the committee; Diana Koehler seconded the motion and carried.

Officers will be sworn in at the December meeting.

Members were reminded of the Fall District VII meeting scheduled for October 18 in Corpus Christi. Ernest Jasek and Susan Bohnenberger will make donations for the prize drawing to be held.

Under new business, President Haag reported that the first meeting for 1993 will be January 21st. Remaining meetings for the year will be scheduled at that time.

Brother Jasek gave the Treasurer's report. The annual charity donation was discussed. Diana Koehler moved to donate the $50 to Eddie Kadlecek, Jr. Dorothy Pape seconded the motion. Kathleen Mills was selected to attend to the details. The donation will be presented at the December meeting.

The Christmas party will be held Tuesday, December 29, 1992 for members and invited guests. A social will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. Adults will not exchange gifts. Bunco will b. played, with each adult member who wishes to play, paying $1 into the "pot" for prizes. Youth members who play bunco will not be required to pay.

The entree will be barbecued ribs and potato salad prepared by the Bavarian Village. Members are required to bring salads, vegetables, chips and dips, desserts or other accompaniments.

It was agreed that a list of the members, complete with addresses and telephone numbers, should be handed out. Sister Gladys Jasek stated that she had all of the numbers and would help work on a list.

Assistant Youth Leader Arvin Brehm reported on the youth club meeting held earlier in the evening. He stated that the youth planned to have a car wash as a project to raise money for the youth shelter.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Report Dear Vestnik Readers, The Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met for their monthly meeting and an ice cream social on September 13 at 2 p.m. at the Taiton Community Center. We were very pleased to have as our guest for the afternoon Joni Lange, our State Youth Director.

The meeting was conducted by President Lenice Kaspar. Twenty youth members were present and Kirby Bubela was introduced as a new member. Other members new to our club are Mandy Staff and Zachary Zbranek. I would also like to take this time to introduce new members of the 1991-1992 year: Camille Staff, Kyle Kaspar, T.J. Drapela, Chet Dluhos, and Heather Beltrand.

We welcome these youth members into our club and it is wonderful to have our club continue to grow.

Lodge 30, Taiton members participated in various categories and age divisions on August 15th and 16th in the State Youth Achievement Day in Temple.

Congratulations to all the participants and winners of Lodge 30! The 16 participants of the two First Place groups at State included: Camille Staff, Chad Dorotik, Shara Dluhos, T.J. Drapela, Rachel Dluhos, Jason Kaspar, Crystal Roye, and Chase Zalman of the Junior

Group "Swing the Mood"—and Sarah Dluhos, Jeanine Dorotik, Valerie Roye, Lenice Kaspar, Curtis Dorotik, Michael Kaspar, Craig Dorotik, and Craig Dornak of the Senior Group "Copa Cabana." All did an outstanding job! They worked hard honestly together toward a common goal through practicing "a lot," cooperation, good will and with wonderful parents supporting them.

These same 16 participants not only achieved State First Place in the junior and senior groups, but also had other accomplishments. Jeanine Dorotik won First Place in the 12-14 Individual Talent with her toe ballet solo and Lenice Kaspar won First Place in the 15-17 Individual Talent with her tap dance routine.

Crystal Roye won Third Place honors in the 9-11 Individual Talent category with her jazz dance solo. The Senior Group Beseda did an excellent job to bring in a First Place also.

In Crafts, First Place State winners were Sarah Dluhos in 12-14 Needlecraft and 12-14 Hobby Kits; Michael Kaspar, in 12-14 Constructed Items; and Jason Kaspar in 9-11 Constructed Items.

Other Lodge 30 winners at State were Chad Dorotik—Third Place in Pictorial Arts, Hobby Kits and Handicrafts; Crystal Roye—Second Place in Sewing; Shara Dluhos—Second Place in Handicraft; Michael Kaspar—Second Place in Pictorial Arts and Third Place in Science and Education; Lenice Kaspar—Second Place in Needlecraft and Craig Dornak—Second Place in Constructed Items.

Our Lodge 30 scrapbook also won Second Place State honors.

We are so proud to mention all of these youth of Lodge 30 for all their

achievements. They have really worked hard for a large part of this past summer.

Congratulations—all youth of Lodge 30—through your participation and accomplishments, you will be the successful leaders of our future!

We would also like to gratefully thank all the parents for all their support and help throughout the summer. Thank you Wanda Dorotik and Anita Roye for the costume designing and trips to Houston.

Also, thank you to the many mothers for the donated drinks at practices. Thank you to Georgia Dorotik and Joyce Kahanek for running the kitchen for our club as hosts of District Y.A.D. and to all the mothers and fathers who helped set up and clean up as Taiton hosts for Y.A.D. If we are leaving anyone out, please know we appreciate each and every one of you—youth and adults. Teamwork and fraternalism really works!

At the September meeting, other business discussed was the Taiton Community Center Fall Festival to be held on October 4. The club members will have a beverage stand at the volleyball tournament and a cake and animal walk inside the hall for their annual fund-raising projects.

The Fall district Six meeting is November 1 in Hallettsville. Members will participate in entertainment and an ornament contest.

State Youth Director Joni Lange then spoke to the members, parents and leaders and congratulated everyone on their accomplishments at State Y.A.D. "Back to School" contest winners were announced; followed by the presentation door prizes which members had donated. After the meeting adjourned, members played a game. Also, prior to the meeting, members worked on crafts.

To conclude the September meeting, everyone attending was treated to an ice cream social.

III Youth Activity Report District

Our youth had a wonderful summer .

All activities involving the District and the State have come to an end; however, many good memories have been shared by all and we are all looking forward to 1993. Just because camp, Y.A.D., Royalty and State Y.A.D. is over is no sign to relax. Please attend all of your meetings and district meetings this fall and spring so you can qualify for all these special

activities next year. Remember, you must attend a majority of the planned meetings to qualify for camp and Youth.

Dear Youth Club Members and Readers, Our meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Karen Bender. We met on September 20 at the Hallettsville City Park. Our charity for the month was MDA. We will have a homemade Halloween Mask contest at our next meeting.

We are to bring the mask, compete, and awards will be given to the best three masks.

We will then give a program to the adult lodge members and wear the masks we have made.

We voted to go to "The Texian Market Days" for our fun outing in October. We will discuss a time and meeting place at our next meeting.

Youth Leader Jeanette Bender read the guidelines for the Christmas Ornament Contest which the youth may participate in at the District VI fall meeting on November 1, in Hallettsville.

I hope that all of our youth members can join us for the October meeting which will be on Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m. at the Hallettsville Youth Center.

Also, a member of the Hallettsville Volunteer Fire Department will speak to all the lodge and youth members. I hope to see you all then.

9, Snook Youth Club Stays Busy Lodge

Dear Readers: September was a busy month for our youth group. For our meeting, Patrick Fojt spoke on his experiences in the army. Heather Slenk and I represented District I at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell. We also represented District I by riding in a parade for the Burleson County Fair.

I would like to thank Susan Skrabanek for arranging for the car for us to use in the parade. We also participated in the District I meeting held in New Tabor.

Our youth group had a volleyball team, but I was not able to play as I participate in high school volleyball. My family hosted two of the Czech dancers during their stay in our area for the Kolache Festival. This was a real treat for our family.

Our next meeting will be October 7 and Joni Lange will be our guest. We are looking forward to having her visit our group.

President Sadie Kubin welcomed 26 members and four visitors at the September 10th meeting. The visitors were Willie Mae Vavra, Irene Tenney, Tricia Graves, and son, Kristian. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Julius Marek.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the July and August minutes. They were approved as read. Treasurer Mildred Trojacek read the financial report. It was approved as given.

A speedy recovery is wished to Sister Leona Jurica and Leslie Vrla, husband of Sister Mary Vrla. Both were hospitalized.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to birthday celebrants. The quilt was quilted for Emilie Harrison. Linda Trojacek thanked the quilters for quilting her quilt. Bertha Podhrasky was the lucky winner of the krouzek quilt. A drawing for the second krouzek quilt will be at our November meeting—for members only. We appreciate Sadie Kubin for finishing the krouzek quilt. Thanks, Sadie.

Anne Zvolanek celebrated her 80th birthday in August in the home of Georgia Tupy. Several friends and relatives were present to celebrate with her. Alene and Willie Skrivanek are the proud greatgrandparents of Madalyn Nicole Zapletal.

Proud grandparents are Janice and Joe Lansfeld and proud parents are Yvonne and Danny Zapletal. Libbie Elsik is the proud grandmother of Rachel Amelia. The proud parents are Lisa and Dale Elsik.

Last, but not least, the new editor of the Vestnik and his wife, Brian and Joan Vanicek, are proud parents of Stephanie Marie.

Bob and Diane Podhrasky and their two daughters attended the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Bob did the security work for the Olympics for the company where he is employed. They also visited England, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Austria.

In Czechoslovakia, they visited relatives and friends. Bob is the son of Julius and Bertha Podrasky.

Vickie and Jerry Kohn returned recently from their trip to Czechoslovakia and Austria. They visited relatives in Bechyne and Pisek—Vickie's father's homeland.

They visited the Furst family in Cemysovice—Vickie's Grandmother Taraba's family. They also visited Jerry's relatives in Lipa and Zlin in Moravia. They enjoyed Vienna, Austria, where they took a tour of the Vienna woods. They said they will have many fond memories of their trip to Europe. After they returned from their trip, they attended Jerry's 10th annual army reunion of the Second Signal Battalion in Branson, Mo., Sept. 10-13.

The Typy Seventh Annual Reunion was held September 26th on the late Vaclav Tupy homestead on Georgia Tupy's farm on Crisp Road. She had the house remodeled and it looks great. There were 49 descendants of Wesley (Vaclav) and Joe (Josef) Tupy and one guest, Renee Zvolanek. We hope there will be more of us next year. The State Fair in Dallas starts October 2nd and lasts 24 days. See you at our next meeting on October 8th.

Reunion

Marek Reunion The 12th annual Marek family reunion will be held Sunday, October 25 at Lodge No. 47, Seaton, Seaton Star Hall.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served (buffet style) at 12:30 p.m.

Each family is requested to bring a meat and vegetable and/or salad and dessert.

Voluntary donations will be taken. A donation box will be on the table.

Coffee tea and Kool-Aid will be served all day.

Coffee, tea, Kool-Aid, plates, cups, napkins, plastic ware and ice will be furnished.

At 2 p.m., a brief business meeting will be held to elect officers. Visit all day or as long as you like.
