July was another productive month for the SPJST volunteer sales force.

Annunity sales continued to increase due to the 6.25 percent interest rate currently being paid by the Society.

SPJST cookoff team spreads good will Brother Bob Miracle, president of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy, and Brother Gene McBride, State Field Manager, know the meaning of tasteful advertising. On the average, the two spend about 10 weekends a year together, spreading good cheer, good barbecue and the good word about SPJST. Since 1988, Brother Miracle and

Brother McBride have been one-third of the winning SPJST-Willow Flat barbecue cooking team. Other team members include Brother_Doug Roming, ag teacher at Bruceville-Eddy High School and Sisters Jane Miracle, Frances McBride and Linda Roming. All are members of Lodge 200.

Break or Wear Out Life Insurance and More

You have to die to win was the old saying about life insurance. That saying is not true anymore. When the SPJST was organized, members bought life insurance to meet the immediate emergency needs at death. That concept, however, has expanded and changed over the years. Today, many members look to the SPJST for a flexible line of life insurance and financial products.

Recently, your editor attended a workshop for SPJST sales representatives. Although not a salesman, as such, your editor is an elected representative of the Society and has an obligation to keep members informed of the various aspects of the Society's business-be it fraternal or financial.

What I learned at the seminar was enlightening. As a new father, I paid special attention to the section addressing juvenile insurance policies available through SPJST. For many of you, this information my be yesterday's news.

For others, it may lead you to consider investing in a life insurance program for a special young person in your life.

SPJST has a wide variety of life insurance plans for youngsters, including universal life, juvenile whole life, juvenile 20-payment life, single premium life and modified whole life. In addition to providing immediate insurance protection, all of these plans build cash values that can be used to help pay for a college education, a down payment on a home or money for an emergency fund.

Term insurance for children is also available from SPJST. Although term insurance does not build cash value, it does provide immediate insurance protection.

And certainly, every juvenile policy issued by the Society gives your person access to the many benefits of belonging to the SPJST. These include membership and fellowship in a local lodge, the chance to participate in an active youth program and the opportunity to compete for scholarships. All in all, quite a return considering the nominal investment.

When we get together on a regular basis, we nurture and help keep alive the idea of fellowship that our forefathers had in mind when they founded the SPJST. Although the meeting agendas vary from district, the fall meetings serve a very useful function in our Society in that they enable us to fraternize more frequently than every four years at our conventions.

After having attended most of the district meetings this spring, this writer looks forward to visiting with many of you again at these fall meetings and listening to your ideas for making the Vestnik an even more informative and entertaining newspaper. ***

Good News Travels Fast The editor wants to thank Brother Al Kercho, treasurer of Lodge 92, Fort Worth for sending in the article on Lodge 92's Czech Heritage Day. The story, which appeared in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on August 31, is reprinted in the "Letters" section. It is an excellent example of how local lodges can get good, free publicity for Society events when they take take the time to connect with members of the local news media. ***

Heading for the First Round-Up

If you are a regular reader, you will have noticed that for the last few weeks, Vestnik has been posting the dates of the upcoming fall district meetings and family fun days. We do this to remind and encourage all members to make plans now to participate in these events.

Later this month, Vestnik will be presenting the first installment of the "Member Round-Up" section (see article on page 3). Already, the new section shows promise as several news items have been received for publication.

It is with these goals in mind that the Vestnik introduces a new section later this month titled "Member Round-Up." Just as each of us have qualities that make us different, we all share a special kinship as members of the SPJST family. The goal of the Member Round-Up is to better enable members of the Society to celebrate the achievements and share in the special events affecting the lives of their SPJST brothers and sisters.

SPJST Cooking Team Spreads Good Will (Continued from Page 1) The SPJST Willow Flat Team has done pretty well this year. Starting with a first, second and a fourth at the McLennan County Go-Texan Cookoff, three top tens in Elgin, two second places at Clifton, a third and two eighth places at Bruceville-Eddy, and a second and third at Buckholts, they are getting the respect they deserve as a very good cooking team. More recently, in August, the team was featured prominently in "The Pits," a statewide magazine devoted to the delicious world of barbecue and chili cookoffs.

According to Brother Miracle, things really began cooking for the team back in 1989 when the team started winning their first trophies. "Then, in 1990, we had our best year," says Brother Miracle. "We cooked in eight cook-offs and were overall champions in three of those—Troy, Lorena and the 'Temple American Legion Fall Finale.' At the Fall Finale, they won second in chicken, third in pork and second in chili and were named best cooks out of more than 100 contestants from all over Texas. That win in Temple qualified the SPJST-Willow Flat team as one of four Texas teams to cook at the 1991 "Jack Daniels Invitational" in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

After all was cooked and done, the SPJST-Willow Flat team had placed fourth in pork ribs, fourth in sauce, seventh in chicken and sixteenth in brisket— a very respectable showing.

All of the team members enjoy getting away on the weekends for a chance at a good time and visiting with the many friends made at the cookoffs over the last few years, Brother McBride says. "As much as anything, we like going to other communities and helping with their local fund raisers."

"It's tough to say if any of our appearances has ever had any direct effect on

selling SPJST insurance and financial products," says Brother McBride.

"However," he adds, "we're certainly proud of our team name and get a lot of questions about the SPJST and what it's all about.

"So much of it is just having a good time and spreading good will. We may not see any direct effect today—but tomorrow—who knows—it could help attract some good new people to be part of our SPJST family."

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SPJST organization for supporting this and other youth programs. I would like to further thank my Lodge 9 Youth Leaders, Betty Schoeneman and Ann Schoeneman for their many efforts in encouraging and supporting the youth in our club. Fall Meetings District IV Invites Members to Fall Fun Day Dear Members and Friends, District IV Fall Fun Day will be held Saturday, October 17, 1992 in the Rowena SPJST Hall.

Officers and members of Lodge 49, Rowena and Lodge 160, San Angelo met on Thursday, August 27 to plan an interesting day for all members. We trust that with this early announcement, you will keep an open date and be able to attend.

We hereby personally invite every lodge in District IV, including all family members.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and dinner will be served at noon.

The youth clubs will be in charge of decorations, and will put on skits for our entertainment.

A noon meal of barbecue brisket and sausage with trimmings will be served.

Due to the response from the lodges concerning either a quilt or needlework contest, we will try to have both with ribbons being given and a plaque and cash prizes being given to overall winners.

There will also be a kolache contest as in years past.

Registration for these contests will begin at 10:30 a.m. Judging will begin at 11:30 a.m. No entries will be accepted after judging starts. Winners will be announced during our short meeting.

(Editor's note: Sister Barbara Rozacky Hill (80) sent a copy of the following letter to the Vestnik. Thank you, Sister Hill, for taking the time to recognize the efforts of Sister Dorothy Pechal (47) and the fine job she does as curator of the SPJST Museum.)

Dear Mrs. Pechal, Even though this letter comes late, it is written with much appreciation. My mother and father join me in thanking you for taking the time to show our Rozacky relatives, Cenek and his son Petr of Czechoslovakia, the Supreme Lodge Museum.

They thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

Cenek became quite emotional when he discovered a reader he studied in the third grade in Ostrava. He could hardly believe a copy of it could be found in Texas. The entire tour was wonderful.

Because of your excellent command of their native language, Cenek and Petr learned a lot about our state and how Texas Czechs are preserving our rich heritage and culture.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge is to be commended for the outstanding job it is doing to maintain our colorful history.

My family and I are happy to be a part of that preservation. We hope museum visitors will enjoy the early 1900 photo of the Granger Picnic Band my father, Robert Rozacky of Granger, presented to the museum on March 12, 1992. His father and my grandfather, Josef Rozacky of Granger, was a member of that band.

Lodge 24, Cyclone Preparing for Big November Sale Dear Brothers and Sisters, If practice makes perfect, members of Lodge 24 are becoming experts when it comes to hosting big sales events at Flag Hall. At the last meeting, on August 10, members voted to hold their final "County wide Garage Sale" of the year on November 7.

The November sale—the third in a series—will last from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Vendors will feature a variety of merchandise—ranging from antiques to household and miscellaneous items.

Barbecue and homemade baked goods will also be available. Vendor spaces are $20 each. For more information, or to reserve your space, call 985-2228, 9852354 or 985-2484.

In other business, members discussed fund raising and social options for the coming months. A number of good ideas were considered, including a regular hamburger and social night. Brother Wilbert Mikeska, who led discussion on this topic, said that he would gather more information on this subject and report back to members at the September meeting.

Reported on the sick list in August was Brother Otto Schneider. Celebrating birthdays in August were Sisters Shirley Ashcraft, Lori Coots and Willie Mae Vanicek. Celebrating their anniversary during the month were Brian and Joan Vanicek. And, finally, getting married in the month of August were Sister Angela Gamble and Brother Buddy Griggs.

Dear Members: Lodge Karel Jond'S' regularly scheduled monthly meeting is the first Sunday of the month except when national holidays and/or SPJST events of greater importance come on the same date.

Because the Labor Day weekend fell on the first Sunday of September, the September monthly meeting will be held this coming Sunday, September 13, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street in the SPJST Hall building. The agenda will follow the regular "Order of Business" The fraternal hour luncheon will start after the business meeting adjourns. To commemorate Labor Day, an additional door prize will be given.

On Sunday, August 2, our last regular meeting convened at 2 p.m. with a quo-

Lodge 87, Temple's regular meeting was called to order Friday, August 14, at 7:30 p.m. with President Ladis Navratil presiding.

Lad Zatopek led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Silent tributes were then paid to deceased members.

Various reports were given; old and new business discussed.

Special guest for the evening were Frank Klinkovsky, Patsy Koslovsky and Millie Schiller.

Get well wishes were extended to all who were convalescing. Get well wishes to Frances Bartek.

Jerry Valchar was host for the August meeting. Watermelon was served.

To Rudy and Maxine Sefcik: It's been so nice to work with you the past 26 years and indeed a pleasure to know you.

88, Houston Hosts Talent Show Lodge

This is the morning after the TALENT SHOW of the YEAR at Lodge 88, Houston.

The curtain went up promptly at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 20 to the tune of the STRUMMIN' SAINTS. This group was brought to my attention by Lil Holley, a member of our Choral Group.

The Saints won the hearts of everyone with their old familiar songs so dear to us all.

This was followed by the PROPOSAL, by Tillie Helmcamp, portrayed by Marie Stayton and Gene Barcak. Marie struggled, but successfully, to get her man. He finally surrendered.

THE LITTLE GIRL was played by Frances Clark. She displayed the role of an infant, crowded out by toys and knickknacks which she tired to cope with before falling asleep.

A classic duet on the piano, LA ZINGINA, followed, and this was played

by Donna Schnell and Naomi Spencer.

This was followed by a presentation by the Czech instructor, William Souchek, with his BITS of CZECH and ENGLISH YARNS AND JOKES. This was a good time for relaxation and a good laugh.

Then came the presentation by ESTELLE KELLY, who is well known for her performance on the piano and NOBLE KEATING, who miraculously beats his GUT BUCKET and manages a rhythm.

Another skit written by Tillie Helmcamp, THE DATING PROBLEM, followed with Viola Cox, Barbara Linney, Mildred Holeman, John Kosut, Kristi Sokol and Jeanette Dames. The problem was finally solved by relieving themselves of trying to make dating knots.

What would we give to be able to present the entire opera DON GIOVANNI,

by MOZART, at Lodge 88? Well, we enjoyed a rendition of the well-known duet sung by Helen Hegwood as Zerlina and Tim Kostom as Don Giovanni. The intricate runs of this musical number were most professionally performed by our Donna Schnell.

The third, and last skit, JUSTICE FOR ALL, was portrayed by his Honor, Richard Schnell, the judge, Henry Holeman as bailiff, and Tim Kostom as officer in charge. Tom Marsh was brought in with other "culprits" like Johnny Broz, A.J. Stayton, Helen Kubicek and Clara Broz as witnesses.

Between the acts, during the few moments allowed for changes on the stage, we enjoyed the delightful melodies on the accordion by our Evelyn Vornsand, who came all the way from Schulenberg to entertain us. Her renditions of familiar Czech tunes delighted us.

Before the curtain went down for the FINALE, the SPJST, Lodge 88 Choral Group treated the audience with various familiar tunes. The closing number featured Helen Hegwood singing "God Bless America."

I cannot close this chapter without recognizing the assistance of several individuals. These included Tim Kostom and Ernest Anders, who moved articles on stage; and Richard Schnell, A.J. Stayton, Johnny Broz, Rosalee Kostom and Henry Holeman who worked with the cast to keep the show moving along.

Earlier in the day, we found the kitchen buzzing with preparation to meet the guests. We found Gene Barcak, Roy Stonaker and Nat Gonzales making the most delicious hamburgers you ever tasted (I can vouch for that.). And readying to serve pastry, I found Margie Anders and Helen Kubicek assisting Lowrena Lindermann. The pastry that was donated was also appreciated and I thank you for this kindness.

Let's talk about true FRATERNALISM and BENEVOLENCE! I have heard it from the lips of one of our members who once said, "Some of the best people I know come from the SPJST." I find this to be quite true. I found it a joyous experience when I found it necessary to ask for assistance—the responses were always kind and understanding.

To all of you that have shown concern and came forward with your services, I have found this so heart-warming, and I thank you.

From her earliest memories, Martha Hubenak Durham of North Richland Hills recalls attending SPJST lodge meetings. SPJST is the acronym for Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas.

Each year, Durham looks forward to helping preserve the traditions of her ancestors as they celebrate the annual Czech Heritage Day and Homecoming for SPJST Lodge 92. This year's celebration will be Sept. 12 at the National Hall, 3316 Roberts Cut-off Road, in Fort Worth.

"Czech Day" at State Fair of Texas Coming October 18 52nd

The 52nd "Czech Day" at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will be celebrated on Sunday, October 18, 1992.

The day will begin with coffee and Czech kolaches at 8:30 a.m. in the Special Events Tent located next to the Museum of Natural History on the State Fair of Texas grounds. At 9 a.m. a Catholic Mass will be celebrated by the Bishop of Dallas, Most Reverend Charles V. Grahmann D.D. The Czech Day program will begin in the Special Events Tent at 11 a.m. with the welcome from James Macik, president of the American Czech Culture Society, the sponsoring organization made up of representatives of various Czech societies and fraternal organizations.

Also on the program will be Jerry Bartos, City Council member representing the. City of Dallas. There will be dancing of the "Ceska Beseda," Czech souvenirs, Czech food, Czech singing, accordion music and lots of fellowship.

There will also be a gymnastic exhibition by members of the SOKOL. Closing out the days activities will be a dance from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. with music compliments of Kovanda's Czech Band. Performing during the days activities will be the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra under the direction of Cyril Pokladnik and the Dallas Czech Singers under the direction of Bob Liska.

Everyone is invited to come join the Czech community in celebrating this special day. The wearing of Czech costumes is encouraged as a parade of traditional Czech dress will be held during the day's program.

Touring Texas Dr. Jaroslav Stika and his Polajka Ensemble group of 18 people from the Wallachian Museum of Natural History in Czechoslovakia will be touring Texas from Sept 9 to Sept. 28.

These are historians, interested in Texas Czechs, our lifestyles, and what we are doing to preserve our heritage. More than that, they are also professional musicians, singers and dancers.

They will be in Pasadena, Caldwell, College Station, Ennis, Dallas, Temple, Fayetteville and LaGrange, Hallettsville, Victoria, El Campo and Galveston.

Letters District VI Camp Features Western and Olympic Themes

Mr. and Mrs. John Vince Oehl

John and Edith Oehl Celebrate 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. John Vince Oehl of Stafford, Texas celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on April 28, 1992.

John and Edith were married in Ganado, Texas, at Assumption Catholic Church on April 28, 1942, by the Rev. Emil Kostorz. Mrs. Oehl is the former Edith Frances Novak.

They moved to Houston in 1942 and settled down in the Heights area, where John worked at a ship yard building ships for use in World War II. In August 1944, they relocated in the East End and raised their family. They were parishioners of Resurrection Catholic Church and members of the Holy Name Society and Altar Society. John was then employed as a contractor and built custom homes all over the Houston area. Edith worked in the house, tending to the family. She enjoyed sewing and growing plants and flowers. They lived in the East End area for 27 years. They built a new home in Stafford, Texas, in 1971, where they now reside, and are parishioners of Holy Family Catholic Church. In 1981, John retired but continues to work in his garage at leisure. John and Edith are now enjoying their retirement years working in the garden and canning their homegrown vegetables.

John and Edith have three children: daughter and son-in-law Evelyn and Bennett Roberts, of Houston, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and David Sharp, of Spring, Texas; and son, James Oehl, of Jersey City, New Jersey; and five grandchildren: Kathy , Danny, Frank, Stephen and Janet; and a great granddaughter, Brittany.

The children honored their parents at a Celebration Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church on Saturday, may 2, 1992, where they renewed their wedding vows. The altar was adorned with flowers of blue iris, white gladiolas, and yellow chrysanthemums. The Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Ken Decker, Pastor of Hold Family Church, and co-celebrated by the Reverend Tom Wendland and the Reverend Don Sawyer. Fr. Wendland

is a long-time friend of John and Edith and son, James; and Fr. Sawyer is a former classmate of James.

The Readings were recited by their children and special Mass intentions were recited by Willie Novak, Edith's brother., and Martha West, John's sister. Special gifts were carried to the altar by the grandchildren and great granddaughter.

The Mass of Thanksgiving and celebration was made even more special by the attendance of many relatives, friends, neighbors and acquaintances.

A reception in the Parish Hall allowed everyone to enjoy visiting with relatives, neighbors and friends, listening and dancing to recorded music and renewing old friendships with former neighbors.

The Hall was decorated with English Ivy from Jersey City, sprigged with tiny yellow and white flowers. Arrangements of blue iris, yellow mums and white stock adorned the honorees' dining table.

The register table held the couple's original wedding photos and photos of their three children. A beautiful glass crystal rose and candle holder specially designed by son, James, was placed with the wedding photos.

The anniversary cake was decorated with wedding roses and gold etched leaves cascading down three tiers. The cake top, also designed by son, James, was made of two glass crystal hearts, doves and "50th." The cake table held an arrangement of white Freshia in a "Phoenix" dairy milk bottle reminiscent of the time John worked for Phoenix dairy in early 1942; and a photo taken in Spring 1991 of the couple's vegetable garden and bluebonnet patch.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious barbecue brisket and sausage dinner with buttered potatoes, slaw, and green beans catered by Mikeska's of El Campo, Texas The John Oehl Family wish to thank everyone who helped make the anniversary celebration a very special occasion.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On the weekend of June 19-21, a group of 40 SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 28, East Bernard; Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje, and Lodge 30, Taiton, attended District VI Summer Camp at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange.

Lenice Kaspar, Craig Dorotik, and Craig Dornak served as leaders-in-training (L.I.T.'s) for the camping weekend.

Youth who assisted as L.I.T. helpers during the camping session were Valerie Roye, Jody Krpec, Sharon Borak, Bradley Krpec, Jeanine Dorotik, Sarah Dluhos, Michael Kaspar, and Jeremy Kalmus.

The camp opened Friday afternoon with introductions, rules and cabin assignments. Friday evening's theme for camp was "District VI Goes Back to the Wild West!" Activities began with swimming and a hot dog cookout. Friday night's party had everyone dressed in Indian, cowgirl, or cowboy attire for the 'ole Wild West effect. Campers joined in to play various get-acquainted games and enjoyed learning country line dances. To conclude the "ole West" evening, campers hiked across Camp Lone Star to a campfire site where we all sat around the fire and listened to a story on the "Legend of the Bluebonnets." All campers then enjoyed roasting marshmallows over the open campfire. As we were all hiking back to the cabins at camp, we stopped at various points along the trail and listened to sounds and creatures of the night. Our camp guide gave us interesting information about the different things we had seen.

Saturday morning began with group singing, craft activity, and a session of "camp war games." The theme for Saturday was "Olympic Competitions," following our Olympic year. The afternoon games of competition began with swimming relays and individual swimming relays and individual swimming races followed with canoe races.

Later in the afternoon were hoop shoot contests and running races. After each event, winners were awarded with either

gold, silver, or bronze medals which they wore throughout the day. San rday night was highlighted by a party entitled "Party Down Olympic Style—Camp '92." All campers met at the swimming pool decorated with balloons, streamers, and banners. Awards for the weekend were given out to all attending:

A closing ceremony was held and each camper was given a bag of goodies as they departed.

Special guests during camp on Saturday were Matt Vanek, District Six Director; Georgia Dorotik, past Taiton youth leader, and Rosann and Danielle Zalman. We really enjoyed your refreshing visit and all the support given for the youth of District Six!.

I have a number of big "thank you's" to many people who, by working together in the fraternal spirit of our SPJST Society, made our District Six camping weekend the wonderful success it was.

SPJST Youth Clubs Building Bridges to a Better Tomorrow Dear Leaders and Youth Club Members, With this month's Vestnik contest, we begin the year with a new theme: "SPJST Youth Clubs—Building Bridges to a Better Tomorrow."

Just as the Middle Ages served as a bridge from the age of darkness to an age of discovery, SPJST youth clubs can serve as a bridge to ensure the future of the SPJST. Over the next year, we will _ take a glimpse into the lives of the men T.J. Drapela and Chad Dorotik of and women whose instincts for survival Lodge 30, Taiton pose in western and justice laid the foundation for the attire for the "District Six Goes Back great ages which were to follow. I urge to the Wild West Party."

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Hosts Family Day On Sunday, August 9, we had our annual family day. We had a carnival consisting of wheel of fortune, poker, Coke ring toss, and lollipop pull. We also had a prize drawing.

It turned out very good. Joni. Lange, State Youth Director, came to our meeting. She had a lot of fun at our carnival as did everyone else.

We performed our District VI Y.A.D. program and youth leader Jeanette Bender announced all the winners in the craft division.

The Czech Influence Within Agriculture Throughout the years, Czech farmers have maintained a standard of excellence in the agricultural industry both here and abroad. Orderliness, nearness, and even opulence reflect the Czech's love for the land wherever he may settle. These qualities are readily granted to the Czechs by other groups—especially in Nebraska and Texas where they have farmed for years and are well-organized. Czechs prefer agriculture to other pursuits probably because many Czech immigrants were farmers in their native land. The Czech farmer also experiences a sense of independence from owning his own land because many Czechs were forced to work for the aristocracy in their native land.

The following is an excerpt from the poem "The Czech Farmer" by Stepan Broz... What folk! In struggling with hard nature they never did succumb but hardened their own frame in stifling heat, in cruel frost; their sweating brows the only cost of steady wealth where once in poverty they toiled ...

In Nebraska, Czechs were victorious over all other groups in their ownership of the land. The Irish and Germans leave the farms and go to the cities while the Czechs buy up their farms, preparing a place for the younger generation.

9, Snook Youth Club Makes A Splash Lodge

On August 23, 1992, the meeting of the Lodge 187 Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m. by President Carey Holman. Troy Oman led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read and there were 14 members and 7 adults present. e minutes were read and approved.

Allyson Holman gave the treasurer's report. Our youth leader, Sharon olman, reported on camp, State Y.A.D., the fall District H Meeting and our trip to Schlitterbahn. At the State Y.A.D., Carey Holman won first place in the 1517 age group for her needlework and also for the Special Category. She also won a $500 scholarship. Allyson Holman won second for her needlework in the 12-14 age group.

The District II Fall Meeting will be at our Lodge 187. We hope all of you in District II will attend. The next Youth Club meeting will be on September 20 at 2 p.m. After our meeting, we will honor our grandparents and adult members of our lodge with a meal to celebrate Grandparent's Day. Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
