BOX 100 TEMPLE, TX 76503-0100 *** Our incoming Editor Brian Vanicek is facing two firsts of his life in the near future: First, he and his wife are expecting their first baby approximately the middle part of August, and second his first editorial in September 2ndVestnik issue. Best of luck is wished in both cases! ***

Then and now! Brian certainly faces a different type of beginning as editor than this writer was faced with in January 1969--24 years ago. He has a completely different Headquarters to work with and is more experienced in the newspaper business. He will be working with an understanding and fraternal President who understands human nature and a cooperative group of officers.

He also has the complete cooperation of your present editor in aiding and working out problems in the future as they may arise for as long as it is needed; even though he has visited the printshop two different times and has had quite a number of hours in discussion of problems and exchanging ideas with your outgoing editor. For instance last week proved that we had not covered everything and questions will arise from time-to-time in the next few months.

We are both working in the best interest and for the benefit of our SPJST Society in a fraternal cooperative manner.

When January 1, 1969 the past editor became President of the Supreme Lodge, yours truly had one person he could always depend on for information and advice and that was Brother Jerome Kopecky who knew the Vestnik as well as the publication thereof better than anyone in the Society, because he had been associated with the publishing firm and the printing of the Vestnik for several decades. He was the Czech typesetter and Brother John Ripley was the English typesetter and both proved to be valuable and dedicated sources of information and assistance to your editor at that time for which both deserve and have his gratitude for their understanding assistance. *** At the Supreme Lodge Meeting, in July, Brother Vanicek stated that he would spend the latter part of July plus August getting better acquainted with the various aspects of our Society including camps, socials, meetings, etc.

He has been to District III Camp and would try to attend camping with District II which Supreme Lodge Vice

President Gebala was also planning to attend.

This, of course, is certainly a step forward because, at one time, there was a feeling that the Youth Department and Fraternalism were necessary baggage to carry along with our sales of insurance.

We have all seen, especially when we look at the back page of several past Vestnik editions, all these benefits certainly augment our sales representatives' efforts in presenting and selling SPJST insurance plans to the general public. *** The Minutes of the July Supreme Lodge meeting are in this issue--everyone is encouraged to read them carefully; they are printed for your information and consideration. *** At the conclusion of our SPJST bylaw recommendations for changes and/or additions for the last convention, the By-Law Committee added the following: The By-Law Committee strongly feels that the following recommenda. lions should be considered very carefully and appropriate action should be taken as soon as possible.

(1) That the SPJST automobiles should proudly display the logo of our Society. In addition, it is felt that except for State Field Managers, all autos should remain at the site of the Supreme Lodge when not in use for official business. No more than five motor vehicles be owned or leased by the Supreme Lodge.

(2) Emphasize and enforce Article 34(a) regarding depository bank or banks must be approved in advance by the Supreme Lodge.

(3) That the SPJST by-laws have been chosen by our members to govern this Society and that SPJST is a membership Society. Accordingly, the bylaws are to be observed and enforced diligently and consistently at all levels of our Society.

(4) Goal to meet right away--an active sales representative in every lodge before our 100th anniversary celebration!

(5) Review the feasibility of the Finance Committee meeting annually.

(6) The Supreme Lodge conduct a thorough study of the retirement plan in order to reduce escalating costs.

(7) Encourage continuing education programs on a regular basis for officers, directors, State Field Managers, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and State Youth Director.

(8) All Supreme Lodge officers shall have inquiry access privileges to computer data.

According to the Supreme Lodge minutes, it seems that only one recommendation from the SPJST By-Law Committee was briefly discussed at this meeting.

These certainly are recommendations to be considered thoughtfully and seriously for the future good of our Society. *** An invitation is extended to every SPJST member in the Society to attend the 17th Annual Westfest which will take place Friday night, September 4 at 6:00 p.m. plus Saturday, September 5 and September 6 at 11:00 a.m. in West at the Longhorn Grounds, one mile south of the city.

The Minutes Of The July 6 - 8, 1992 Regular Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held At The Home Office In Temple, Texas.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman of the Board Sid Pokladnik at 9:15 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge Members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Bernard M. Gebala, Vice Pres.

Jerry Mikulas, Financial Sec. Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Andrew Vavra-I Willie E. Kohutek-II

The following audit assignments were made: BANK AUDIT OF SECURITIES: President Leshikar, Vice President Gebala, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Kohutek, Director Broz, Director Pokladnik, and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska; GENERAL LEDGER: Director Hanus, Director Hrncir; VOUCHERS: Director Vanek, Director Vavra, Financial Secretary Mikulas.

The meeting was recessed at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for audit activities. The meeting was called to order at 2:25 p.m.

Editor-elect Brian Vanicek visited the meeting and spoke briefly. He stated he would be operating out of the Home Office Building and also discussed submitting the Vestnik to the publisher in camera-ready form. He discussed lease vs purchase of the equipment needed to give us camera-ready capabilities and the cost savings and advantages of camera-ready copy prepared in house. In response to a question about whether the Editor-elect would need secretarial help, he stated that if he was to do the editing as is done presently, he would not need secretarial support; however, if he is to be in a position to provide other support and camera-ready copy, some part-time or other dedicated assistance would be needed. He stated that it might be desirable at the present time to do the Vestnik camera-ready without photographs. He was asked when he would begin editorial duties and he replied as soon as Editor Sefcik is ready for the transition. He recommended the bid for the Vestnik be asked: (1) as is (2) camera-ready without photographs and (3) camera with photographs. Director Hrncir suggested that the editor teach local lodge reporters what is good reporting and what makes a good photograph.

QUARTERLY LODGE MEETINGS - More information will be provided on the matter of authorizing lodges to meet quarterly and this item was postponed until the October Supreme Lodge meeting. Director Vavra stated that lodges should be required to meet at least quarterly and if they do not meet at least quarterly, should not be entitled to lodge refunds. President Leshikar stated that the lodges should be asked to submit some type of paperwork requesting permission to meet quarterly.

A letter was read from SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton requesting permission to meet quarterly. During discussion it was suggested that it might be advantageous to have lodges merge if they do not meet monthly. The Supreme Lodge has, as matter of policy, been denying requests to meet quarterly but it was questioned if this policy was solving anything. It was proposed that the paperwork for qualifying delegates should be updated. More facts are needed before acting on any requests by lodges to meet quarterly. The By-Laws provide that a lodge must have permission to meet quarterly if it does not meet monthly. Director Vanek stated that the Officers of Lodge 30 indicated they do not have sufficient business to require them to meet monthly. The question asked: What is the advantage of a lodge meeting monthly instead of quarterly? President Leshikar stated that policy will need to be set what the Board would like to accomplish by working through lodges in meeting the needs of members and we will need to formulate plans.

On motion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala, the request of Lodge No. 30 to meet quarterly was tabled to the October meeting pending further consideration of policy to be set about local lodges meeting quarterly.

Director Vanek indicated some plans should be formulated on handling lodges that want to meet quarterly to provide an incentive to meet monthly. The motion carried unanimously.

Editor-elect Vanicek excused himself from the meeting at 4:30 p.m.

FRATERNAL SERVICE REPORT - President Leshikar reported on lodges not responding to the Fraternal Service Report.

Three attempts were made to contact these lodges.

MINUTES - The minutes of April 13-15, 1992 meeting were considered. On page 240 under Director Vavra's new business matters, he requested addition to information about the District I meeting that "Director Vanek attended the meeting and gave a brief outline of the Convention." Also add to clarify that Legal Advisor "and his wife" attended the District I meeting. Under Director Hrncir's report, strike the word "grand." Minutes approved with corrections on motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Hanus. Carried unanimously.

OFFICERS' REPORTS - The Supreme Lodge Officers' reports were acknowledged on unanimously adopted motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Kohutek and carried. (Reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 11.)

MINUTES - Consideration was given to the Supreme Lodge Officers' meetings concerning investment as follows: April 3, 7, 8, 16, 21, and 24; May 1, 6, 19, 20, 22, 28, and 29; June 1, 3, 5, 8, 26, and 30.

The Supreme Lodge Officers' meetings minutes were approved on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Vanek and carried unanimously.

REPORT FROM THE CONVENTION - Director Hrncir suggested that the Mr/Miss SPJST be given some responsibility during the Convention. We should come up with some way to utilize these individuals. Director Hrncir suggested that activities be planned to fill dead time when votes are being tabulated at the Convention.

Chairman Pokladnik relinquished the chair to Vice Chairman Vanek. Chairman Pokladnik then discussed the fact that Kay Kovar's thesis recognition was done on the spur of the moment and items such as this could be used as activities to fill the time when votes are being tabulated at the Convention. Also dignitaries from other Societies were present and could have been given the opportunity to speak. The Chair was returned to Chairman Pokladnik.

President Leshikar discussed the Mr/Miss SPJST contest and stated the Board would need to set some guidelines for the next Convention.

Financial Secretary Mikulas suggested and Legal Advisor Kacir moved that information be placed in the delegate packets in advance designating lead delegates and number of votes for each delegate.

DISTRICT VI: 8 - Weimar, 41 - Port Lavaca, 58 - Hungerford, 184 - Moulton DISTRICT VII: All lodges responded He stated that we need to encourage and motivate lodges to respond to the Fraternal Service report compiled for use by the National Fraternal Congress. Director Hrncir commented that the Fraternal Service report in its present form is inacurate. She suggested that pocket daily planner calendars be given to members and that they be encouraged to list fraternal service acts and to report to their lodge to improve accurate count of fraternal service acts in the SPJST. REVIEW OF MISSION, GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (G & 0) - The membership count listed was said to actually be a count of certificates and not actually membership and this should be clarified and changed from membership to certificates on page 7 of the SPJST G & 0. Comment was made we really should come up with a way to get an accurate count of members in the SPJST. Concerning page 13, of the G & 0, Fraternal Program, President Leshikar reviewed the section on communication which he stated is an ongoing process. He reported that a realistic membership goal would need to be worked out with Vice President Gebala as well as a plan to recognize 100% SPJST families. He discussed the goal of setting up a procedure for initiating and welcoming new members. Chapter 10 of the Texas Insurance Code requires initiating new members.

President Leshikar discussed an idea about possibly having an honor guard for funerals. Lodges could be encouraged to form an honor guard group for funerals when requested. The idea was discussed. It was agreed that President Leshikar would come back with more information on a plan for further consideration.

President Leshikar referred to page 14 of the G & 0, and discussed FAC training scheduled for District FACs on August 8 so that programs can be initiated.

President Leshikar discussed the Youth Department on page 17 of the G & 0. He discussed the option of allowing inactive member children living in areas where no youth clubs are available, to attend camp if they pay the cost. He asked if attempt should be made to notify children, in areas where there is no youth club, that they can attend camp if they pay the full cost. The response indicated that we should look into this matter for further consideration.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 8:35 a.m., July 7, 1992.

Visitors present were Dana Glaser, Judy Pechal, and Editor-elect Brian Vanicek.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that he expected the expense of the Convention to be about $215,000.

Chairman Pokladnik announced that the Board was invited to lunch at the First National Bank and that Steve Niemeier would be present at 2 p.m. to report on Director Broz stated that a hardship was created on delegates who had to drive a the external audit. President Leshikar reported on a U.S. Treasury Study of Large Fraternal Benefit Societies and passed out communications from the National long distance since the Convention adjourned near 9 p.m.

Recess was taken from 3:30 p.m. until 3:45 p.m Fraternal Congress on the matter of taxation of fraternals.

4/VESTNifIC—Wednesday, August 12, 1992 HOME OFFICE INSURANCE ACCOUNT - Vice President Gebala discussed the commission of walk-in business which has previously been divided up among Home Office employees as a bonus. He suggested that a committee be set up on the matter and the funds be redirected to be used for seminars and education for Home Office employees to improve their on-the-job expertise and efficiency. President Leshikar stated that he was under the impression that it was understood that these funds would be divided among employees this year and that we should not change this until next year.

On motion by Legal Advisor Kacir seconded by Vice President Gebala, it was agreed that one officer and two directors be put on a committee to study what is to be done with the commission fund from walk-in business. Motion carried unanimously.

PRESENTATION OF FIC AWARD - Kathy Fritz was invited into the Board room. Vice President Gebala presented her with the F.I.C. of the Year award certificate for the SPJST and congratulated her on this accomplishment.

REVIEW OF ANNUITY CONTRACT/GUARANTEED RATE - Vice President Gebala reported that most insurance companies have a 4 to 4.5 guaranteed rate and the SPJST has a 5% guaranteed rate. To change the guarantee rate would require refiling the contract and discontinuing future sales of the existing plan. Legal Advisor Kacir spoke in favor of lowering the guaranteed rate and said he would like to see information about our liquidity in this plan and that the Board should determine some maximum amount the Society would like to place in annuities. The question was propounded, "what is a safe percent of our assets in this line of business?" Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed liquidity, good business practices in managing each product, and the need for flexibility we would gain in setting a lower guaranteed rate. Financial Secretary Mikulas discussed new requirements from the Texas Insurance Department concerning liquidity requirements for insurance companies. He stated that our liability set up for annuities is on a dollar for dollar basis which is the conservative approach.

Director Vavra expressed concern about the impact on the Society as a result of dropping the guaranteed rate. Legal Advisor discussed the flexibility to the Society of lowering the guaranteed rate and his feeling that we might be in a position to pay a higher rate on the annuities if we had the flexibility of a lower guaranteed rate.

Legal Advisor Kacir made a motion that the possibility of lowering the guaranteed rates on a new annuity program be placed on the agenda for the October meeting at which time additional information and cost figures will be available including recommendation on a maximum percent of our assets desired in annuities and recommendation on administrative procedure to handle rollovers. Vice President Gebala seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

DEFINITION OF AN ANNUITANT - There was discussion about whether or not annuities could be held in trusts and the annuitant would be other than an individual through utilization of a trust. After discussion, a motion was unanimously adopted, that we continue to accept annuities only where the individual is a person and other arrangements are not acceptable. The motion was made by Director Hrncir, and seconded by Director Vanek.

Judy Pechal spoke briefly and discussed the need for more support for the DYCs and the youth program. She pointed out the need for more male chaperones specifically citing the past L.I.T. Retreat. Specific instances were cited where in her opinion more support was needed and this would be looked into by President Leshikar. Dana Glaser suggested the need for more visibility and Home Office support for the youth. She expressed support for the Supreme Lodge and stated that whatever problems exist are minor problems.

Recess was taken at 10:05 a.m. until 10:25 a.m.

BLOOD TESTING - Vice President Gebala reported that in researching this subject, it comes down to a management decision of the risk you want to take.

Our present guidelines are conservative and costly but as an insurance company increases the limit at which it tests, it makes itself vulnerable to more risk.

During discussion, it was stated that we currently do a blood test at applications of $25,001 and consideration was given to beginning testing at $50,001. On motion by Director Broz, seconded by President Leshikar, it was agreed to raise the blood testing level to $50,001. Vote was eleven in favor of the motion and Director Kohutek voted in opposition. The motion carried.

HOME OFFICE, HEATING/AC - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that according to discussion in the previous meeting, bids were secured for replacement of seven of the rooftop heating/air-conditioning units with energy efficient gas heating units. The Board decided by mail poll to award the job to LochridgePriest, Inc. at a price of $24,936, the low bid. The work is near completion.

The action and cost of the job was ratified on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by President Leshikar. Motion carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOANS/DELINQUENCIES - Secretary-Treasurer •Mikeska referred to a list of loans delinquent three or more months which list was attached to the Secretary-Treasurer's report.

Motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska that the recommendations for action be approved, seconded by Director Hanus and carried unanimously.

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED/REAL ESTATE LOANS Delinquent loans and real estate owned were reviewed and the following is a list of recommended reserves for potential loan and real estate losses.

The reserves for anticipated loan losses are reviewed quarterly. We have reviewed the delinquent loans and based on available information recommend the

following reserve for potential losses. Factors used in setting up the reserve include the director's current report on the property and/or the tax market value and other available data.

Motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska that the recommended loss reserve be approved, seconded by Director Hanus, and carried unanimously, AUDIT REPORT FOR 1991 - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the Independent Audit for 1991 completed by Brockway, Chupik, Gersbach & Niemeier, P.C. was forwarded to each officer and director on 5-27-92. This audit needs to be reviewed & ratified in our Supreme Lodge Meeting. A copy of the financial statement and management letter has been forwarded to the Texas Insurance Department to comply with the Texas Insurance Code. This audit report was due by 6-30-92 and was mailed to the Texas Insurance Department on 6-29-92.

The remainder of the report was deferred to the afternoon session at which time Auditor Steve Niemeier would be present.

DIRECT BILL - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that we have converted 98 lodges to direct bill consisting of 47,860 certificates. He stated this completes 92% of our certificate membership and 84% of our lodges.

BUDGET 1992 - Financial Secretary Mikulas stated he has submitted an itemized listing of all income and expense for the first six months of 1992 comparing the totals with the budget amount. He pointed out that any expense item in excess of 50% or more needs to be reviewed. Actual expenses compared to the budgeted amount are down by 2%. Income for the first six months stands at 71%.

He referred to the budget comparsion report item-by-item. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated opinion that figures to-date are favorable.

FORECLOSED PROPERTY - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported on real estate owned as follows: (a) REO #179 - Residence on 3-acre tract of land in Burleson County, Texas, foreclosed 8-6-91. Book value of $81,923.66. In process of sale for $60,000, down payment of $14,000 with SPJST taking a note for $46,000. A loss of approximately $26,986.99 is anticipated after closing costs. Motion by S-T Mikeska that the sale be ratified as reported, Director Broz seconded and it carried unanimously. (b) REO #181 - Residence at 5401 Lea Crest, in city of Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, foreclosed 2-4-92. Book value is $57,360.13. Listed for sale with Prudential Keystone Realtors for $74,000. We would need to reduce price on an as is cash sale. An FHA appraisal in connection with a pending contract values the property at $93,000 subject to roof and general repairs of approximately $6,160 plus foundation repairs indicated on a foundation report. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported we have a verbal cash offer of $50,000 and another offer for $60,000 subject to $500 repairs and acceptable foundation repairs at an undetermined cost. It appears that to qualify the property for VA/FHA approval, we can expect repairs of near $6,100 plus undetermined foundation repairs. It may be desirable to reduce the price and sell the property for cash as is. He reported that foundation repairs carry an unknown risk as to cost. The input of the Supreme Lodge is requested.

Motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska that the Supreme Lodge Officers and Director Pokladnik be authorized to decide on sale of the property, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir and carried unanimously. (c) REO #182 & 183 - Commercial property located at 6620-6630 Azle Avenue, Lake Worth, Texas in Tarrant County. Book value is $92,852.49. Foreclosed 6-2-92. Appraisal is pending. Anticipated listing price is approximately $109,000.

Motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska to authorize Supreme Lodge Officers and Director Pokladnik to decide listing and on sale of the property, seconded by Vice President Gebala and carried unanimously.

A question was asked if the amount of mortgage loans that the Society has on the books could effect our rating. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that we had received an inquiry from A.M. Best & Co. requesting specific details about our mortgage loans portfolio. He stated that although mortgages have not been a

Wednesday, August 12, 1992—VESTNEK/5 problem for the SPJST and we have experienced a very low loss percentage, other insurance companies have had a problem with real estate and mortgage loans and this could explain the rating companies interest in mortgages. A detailed response outlining the positive aspects and performance and safety features of our mortgage loans was provided to President Leshikar who would respond to the rating company.

COMMITTEE ON WALK-IN SALES COMMISSION - The individuals named to serve on the committee to look into the matter of commissions from walk-in business were Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Vanek and Director Hrncir.

Recess for lunch was taken at 11:25 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

TITLE WORK ON PENDING LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir gave an item by item report of the status of loans in process.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCIES - Legal Advisor Kacir referred to his written report and gave an item by item report of tax suits in connection with fifteen real estate loans, thirteen foreclosures started or in process of workout and seven bankruptcies in process.

AUDIT REPORT FOR 1991 - Steve Niemeier and Jerry Tyroch of the auditing firm of Brockway, Chupik, Gersbach, and Niemeier, P.C. were present and commented on the independent audit. Mr. Niemeier referred to the financial statements as of December 31, 1991 and 1990 and reported the auditors have given the Society a clean opinion. The notes to the financial statements were reviewed.

Mr. Niemeier commented that they received a great deal of cooperation and were pleased with the level of qualified assistance during their audit.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - In the previous meeting, a question had arisen about reporting premium income in the annual statement and response was made

by Legal Advisor Kacir that the report was correct as provided in the By-Laws.

Editor Sefcik and Editor-elect Vanicek left the meeting.

EDITOR'S SALARY - Financial Secretary Mikulas asked for clarification of the effective date of the Convention action on the Editor's salary. It was concluded that Editor Sefcik would receive $3225 monthly for the remainder of 1992.

The new Editor's salary will be based on a monthly rate of $2,583.33 for the first six months beginning July 16, 1992. The amounts stated above were affirmed on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Broz, and carried unanimously.

On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hanus, it was agreed to retain Maxine Sefcik on the payroll through October 31, 1992. Motion carried unanimously.

NEW BUSINESS BID FOR PRINTING BY-LAWS AND PROCEEDINGS - On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Vavra, it was agreed that President Leshikar obtain bids for printing of new By-Laws and Convention Proceedings.

Motion carried unanimously.

Chairman Pokladnik asked if there were any questions about the audit results.

The management letter was reviewed and it was reported that the auditors did not find anything that was a material weakness in the system.

On motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Director Vavra, it was agreed to note in the minutes that the audit report and the management letter were reviewed. It was further agreed that the detailed report presented the financial condition of the Society; that questions were anwered and it so be noted in the minutes that the report was accepted. Motion carried unanimously.

LEGAL SECRETARY - Legal Advisor Kacir presented a job description for his secretary employed in the Legal Advisor's Department for SPJST work. He reported that the Society pays a portion of the salary for the position and he personally supplements that salary because he cannot employ a qualified person for the salary allowed by the Society. He asked the Society to pick up the entire cost of the salary for the legal secretary.

Chairman Pokladnik relinquished the Chair to Vice Chairman Vanek to speak on the matter. Chairman Pokladnik asked if the au:notity to pay salary for employees applied only to those individuals employed by Supreme Lodge Officers in the Home •ince. He also asked why the request for salary for the individual was not brought up at the Convention. Legal Advisor Kacir responded that there was no need for the Convention to act on salary of an employee since the authority for this is provided in the By-Laws.

Vice Chairman Vanek returned Chair of the meeting to Chairman Pokladnik, Legal Advisor Kacir responded to questions informing the Board that the SPJST Legal Advisor's secretary does work only for the Society and he is requesting the Society to pay her salary which salary is in line with what other persons are paid in this area for comparable work.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He had no business to bring before the Board.

EDITOR RUDY SEFCIK - Editor Sefcik was present at the meeting at 3:20 p.m. Editor-elect Brian Vanicek was also present. After exchange of greetings, Editor Sefcik discussed the draft of the proposed Vestnik publication contract.

Editor Sefcik discussed the process of preparing the Vestnik copy for printing by offset. He discussed camera-ready copy and the present process used.

There was a review of how group benefits would be handled for the Editor position. There was a discussion about the transition period and Editor Sefcik stated the transition date of September 1st.

100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDING - There was discussion about selecting a site for an event celebrating the SPJST 100th ANNIVERSARY. After discussion, it was decided on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by President Leshikar, that the Bell County Expo Center be reserved for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 11, 12, and 13, 1997. Motion carried unanimously.

DISTRICT RECOGNITION BANQUETS - Vice President Gebala and President Leshikar proposed that we hold a District Banquet honoring the local Lodge Officers and Sales Representatives. This could be done in the spirit of teamwork and also to promote harmony and recognition among the members.

There was discussion how the district banquets could be beneficial to the organization. All sales representatives and local lodge officers could be invited.

There was discussion whether to hold one large banquet possibly in conjunction with a workshop or separate district banquets. Om motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala, the Supreme Lodge Officers were assigned the responsibility of preparing a recommendation on the matter for the October Supreme Lodge iiiee ring.

The first Convention meeting was held on June 29, 1992 with -ne hosting lodges in the Arlington area. The Convention Center is not available for the traditional Sunday evening welcome banquet and registration.

The Board's input was requested since this is out of the to start the Convention on a Tuesday. If the oard wishes to start on a Litiaton as we traditionally do, there is a need to look for another place to hcii the trz.ditional Sunday night Welcoming Banquet and Sunday registration.

There was discussion of possible options and Legal Advisor Kacir recommended that an attempt be made to secure a location to hold the traditional Sunday evening event since the Convention Center is unavailable until Monday morning. It was suggested that the Sunday registration could be scheduled at the Sheraton Hotel in Arlington, and it was so agreed by consensus of opinion. On motion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by President Leshikar, the XXVII Convention was set for June 9-12, 1996, with the Convention to be held at the Arlington Convention Center. Motion carried unanimously.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, AND MUSEUM (LAM) - There was review of the Convention action authorizing a committee to study long range plans for the LAM. The Convention action is as follows:

A total allocation of $30,000 for committee work of a committee to be appointed by the Supreme Lodge consisting of the chairpersons or vice chairpersons of the four standing committees, plus up to five other members to study and investigate the long range plans for the LAM.

There was discussion about when the Editor-elect would begin his involvement in the transition and when it would be equitable to put him on the payroll.

The committee will report to the Supreme Lodge and make recommendations to the 1966 Convention for any further action.

After discussion, it was agreed on motion by Vice President Gekala seconded by Director Hrncir, that Editor-elect Brian Vanicek be placed on the payroll effective July 16, 1992. He will begin by attending youth camp and doing feature stories. On August 1, 1992 he will begin working with Editor Sefcik in the transition program and will take full responsibility for the Vestnik September 1, 1992. The motion carried unanimously.

The SPJST members on this committee will receive the same compensation as the SPJST standing committees, except for any Supreme Lodge officer who might be selected.

On motion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala, it was agreed that the committee be composed of the four Standing Committee Chair persons, and if a chairperson declines, then the Vice Chairperson would be asked to serve. The Supreme Lodge President is an ex offico member of the committee.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 12, 1992 SYD JONI LANGE - SYD Lange was invited into the meeting.

She reported that expenses of the Mr/Miss SPJST Contest to-date were approximately $5,176.

The Directors requested that they be provided with copy of the Youth Rule Book.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:40 p.m. until 8:30 a.m. July 8, 1992.

Executive session was requested to discuss a matter requiring confidentiality.

President Leshikar called attention to problems in accounting for and securing proper audits of District Funds and Camp and Youth Funds and the matter was discussed. The Convention action on the Camp Fund allocation was reviewed. It was agreed to set up a procedure for handling the funds in the districts to be considered by the Supreme Lodge in the October meeting.

Editor-elect Brian Vanicek was present.

DISTRICT FACs - On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala, it was decided to pay mileage, food, and $50 per diem to the District FACs when: (1) Training local FACs and working with a lodge to promote fraternal activities.

(2) Attending a workshop approved by the Supreme Lodge.

The funds for this purpose are limited to $6,000 for the period from July 1, 1992 to July 1, 1993, subject to annual review. Motion carried unanimously.

MR/MISS SPJST CONTEST - President Leshikar called attention to the fact that provision was not made to pay lodging for the contestants at the Convention for Monday and Tuesday night. On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala, payment of lodging was authorized for the contestants for the two nights. Carried unanimously.

SPJST FRATERNAL FEST - President Leshikar reported that there have been suggestions that we hold the Czech Fest at different places around the state. Another suggestion was received to hold the Czech Fest twice a year. He asked for input from the Board.

The annuity accumulation period rate is 7.1% effective through July 31, 1992.

The guaranteed rate is 5%. The last rate change occurred in July 1991. The gross yield on $25,881,661.37 assets allocated to annuities is 8.243%. The yield is based on gross return allowance for servicing expense. The current gross spread is 1.15%. .

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska explained the conservative policy followed in allocating investments to the Annuity and Universal Life programs and how the spread between the credited rate and gross rate earned could be increased by investing in longer term investments. He also explained the additional interest rate risk that would be incurred with longer term investments. There was extensive discussion about different aspects of the annuity and Universal Life Products.

It was decided to set the annuity interest rate at 6.25% effective for the period beginning August 1, 1992 through October 31, 1992. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and it carried with eleven in favor and Louis Hanus voting in opposition.

The Universal Life rate was set at 7.5% effective for the period beginning August 1, 1992 through October 31, 1992. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala, and it carried unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOAN APPLICATIONS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska recommended the following: (a) Addition to the Director's inspection report of a checklist question concerning the existence of any uncapped wells in known, past or present oil and gas well areas. (b) Addition of a provision in the loan commitment that a loan is not to exceed 75% of the appraised value or purchase price of the offered security, whichever is less. Should the loan commitment amount be greater than 75% of the said appraised value or purchase price, whichever is less, the loan amount will be reduced accordingly, the application will be recommitted, and borrower will be provided with amended Truth in Lending disclosure statements. It is borrowers responsibility to advise Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) if the appraised value or purchase price of the offered security changes after the time of the loan application. (c) Addition of a provision in the loan commitment that it is required that SPJST be furnished copies of the closing statements from the loan closer prior to closing, with instructions that if the closing statement is revised prior to closing, the revised closing statement will also be furnished to SPJST for review prior to any loan closing.

It was suggested that funds be made available to each district wanting to conduct a Fraternal Festival. After discussion, a motion was adopted authorizing $750 per district to promote an SPJST District Fraternal Fest in each district for 1992 and also 1993 with each director responsible for coordination. Funds not used during each of the years are not to be carried forward. Subject to review for 1994. Motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, and carried unanimously.

The three recommended optional items were uanimously approved on motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Director Kohutek.

Recess was taken from 10:20 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

After discussion, it was decided to plan on moving files to the meeting room area east of the lobby to the basement as a possibility of making room for the Editor's office and keeping the meeting room space intact. It was further decided to authorize the Supreme Lodge Officers to proceed and decide on plans needed to develop available space into an office for the Editor. The motion was by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hanus, and carried unanimously. It was understood that authorization was included to purchase office furniture and if deemed appropriate, to secure the services of the architect who designed the building for limited advice on an hourly basis.

CORRESPONDENCE - It was reported that correspondence of an unusual nature was received addressed to the SPJST Museum. All employees were to be briefed and the item was turned over to the proper agency for appropriate attention.

SEMINAR - President Leshikar made a motion that SYD Joni Lange be authorized to attend a National Youth Workers Convention, September 25-29 in Nashville, Tennessee. The motion was seconded by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

FIC OF THE YEAR - Vice President Gebala encouraged the Board let him know if they would like to nominate someone for the Texas "F.I.C. of the Year" award.

ANNUAL TOP PRODUCERS' SEMINAR - Vice President Gebala discussed ideas for the day-long workshop for top producers. Discussed and postponed for further consideration.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska requested consideration and ratification of investments for the period beginning April 1, 1992 through for June 30, 1992 as listed in his report. The investments as reported were ratified on motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Vavra. Carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska requested the customary review of the Society's Investment Policy last amended during the April Supreme Lodge meeting and a copy was attached to his report. After discussion, the percentage of assets permitted in Bonds and Government securities was increased from 60 to 65% of assets, on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by President Leshikar. Motion carried unanimously.

The Society Investment Policy was affirmed with the one change on unanimously adopted motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hrncir.

ANNUITIES/UNIVERSAL LIFE - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that the Universal Life rate of 8% is effective through July 31, 1992. The gross yield on $6,447,854.51 of assets allocated to Universal Life is 9.058%. The spread is 1.058%. The assets allocated are bonds and mortgages on a 2 to 1 ratio. The average yield on bonds allocated is 8.747% and on mortgages since 1986 is 9.68%.

Input was requested from the Board if the current gross spread of 1.058% is adequate and if the current payout rate of 8% is too high. Yield on allocated funds reportedly could be increased by lengthening maturities on investments but this would increase interest rate risks.

OFFICE SPACE FOR EDITOR - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported he understood that Editor-elect Brian Vanicek will be provided with office space in the Home Office Building. The options for creating office space were discussed.

Input and authorization was requested from the Board.

SALARY FOR QUALIFIED PERSON TO BE EMPLOYED - Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that during the April meeting, there was discussion about hiring an individual to provide high level backup assistance in the SecretaryTreasurer's Department. He stated that although full authority for hiring an accountant or other qualified person is fully provided for in the By-Laws, the Convention action of the Finance Committee report emphasized the need to do so. Request was made that the Supreme Lodge authorize a salary range for the position in the Secretary-Treasurer's Department.

During discussion it was concluded that authority and procedure to fill such position is covered in Article 37 (b) (11) of our By-Laws. A job description summary was reported with a summary of qualifications which would be posted.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska discussed filling of the position, qualifications, job description and discussed need for more assistance in the department. He explained the individual would report to the Secretary-Treasurer.

Consideration was given to setting a salary range that would be allowed depending on specific qualifications and job experience. The Salary range was set from $22,000 to $32,000 annually on unanimously adopted motion by Legal Advisor.

Kacir, seconded by President Leshikar.

VESTNIK EQUIPMENT - There was discussion about newspaper equipment for preparing the Vestnik for printing. It was recommended that we receive bids before deciding on lease or purchase of equipment. Vice President Gebala moved and President Leshikar seconded approval of the recommendation. Editor-elect Vanicek will furnish recommendation to the Board after bids are received and acted on and decision on equipment will be made at that time. Motion carried unanimously.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the statement with the Board.

Wednesday, August 12, 1992 —VESTNIK/7 Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that new liquidity requirements were being imposed on insurance companies and he and Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska would be working on the new requirements.

COMPARISON OF 91 AND 92 INCOME AND EXPENSE - Expenses todate were reported down 1.11%. Assets increased 14%. Annuities have increased to over $26 million.

Director Vavra stated he enjoyed the meeting and hoped we all remember that the delegates have re-elected us all, except District VII which will be a new member of the Board in January, to run this Society for another four years.

"They have placed their trust in us. We not only need to but we have to respect their wishes and trust us by being united here in the Supreme Lodge as a body of people working together in harmony and for the Society and not individuals. If we have made mistakes it's time we correct them and work for the betterment of the Society. Let's march on to better and bigger things."

NEW ISSUES AND TERMINATIONS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on new issues and terminations for April, May, and June 1992.

New issues of insurance were $5,501,468 and terminations were $3,049,774 for this three months.

New issue premium income was $100,734.44 and terminated premium income was $35,191.91 for the three months.

UNCLAIMED FUNDS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on unpaid funds and claims.

A schedule of unclaimed personal property follows. Article 92 (f) of our ByLaws provides "on unpaid claims where funds have been held unpaid because the claimant cannot be located or is not legally entitled, such funds shall be donated to a charitable use designated by the Supreme Lodge. If a claimant appears who is legally entitled to such funds, the Supreme Lodge is authorized to pay such claimant."

Financial Secretary Mikulas asked if the By-Law was applicable to the funds and if it is the desire of the Board to designate the personal property claims to the Scholarship Fund or to some other charitable use? After discussion, it was agreed to designate the funds for the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Unpaid Amount $1,151.81 ADVERTISING FOR VESTNIK BIDS - Legal Advisor Kacir referred to a draft advertising for bids for the Vestnik. The bids' sheets would be mailed in early September and the bids would be opened at the next Supreme Lodge meeting on October 6 at 1:30 p.m.

DIRECTOR BROZ - He encouraged cooperation of the Board. He thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for attending the District IV meeting in Seymour.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He referred to a number of questions which were answered and he discussed the financial figures. He discussed the increase of interest earned on mortgage loans.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He appreciated of the courtesy shown by the Officers and Directors at the Convention and appreciated the good job that the members of District VI did in planning and working at the Convention. He commented on the fact that the Convention costs are down substantially from previous Conventions.

Director Vanek asked explanation of amounts paid to the pension plan actuary and was given explanation of the charges. He discussed specific lengthy phone charges and it was agreed to research the matter and get the information to the Board. A charge on a loan in bankruptcy was questioned and explained.

Director Vanek stated he enjoyed the meeting.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR - She stated it has been a very good three days and she appreciated Editor-elect Vanicek being present at the meeting.

Commenting on the Convention, she stated an opinion that the delegates came prepared to serve and the outcome was good.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK - Commenting on the Convention, he stated it would be good if more people were willing to speak.

He spoke about the good discussions during the meeting.

There was discussion if the bid information should require that the bidder have the capability of printing one run of at least twenty-four pages. It was agreed that this will not be a specification requirement.

Supreme Lodge members asked that bid information be mailed to the following in addition to being published in the Vestnik: Hill County Press, PrintMaster, and Cen-Tex Press and any other names any Board member wants added. Alternatives to be bid will be: 1. Camera-ready with photos 2. Camera-ready without photos 3. Camera-ready on 3.5 disk 4. As is, not camera-ready On motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala, authority was granted to advertise for bids for the Vestnik as reported. Motion carried unanimously.

SALARY AND JOB DESCRIPTIONS - It was agreed that Supreme Lodge Officers come up with a recommendation on employee salaries and job descriptions to be considered by the Supreme Lodge in the October meeting.

The motion by Vice President Gebala, and was seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, carried unanimously.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - AUDIT OF SECURITIES - Director Kohutek reported on the audit of securities in the safety deposit box and in transit, and stated that all securities were accounted for.

NEPOTISM - Director Kohutek asked the Legal Advisor to clarify the rules on nepotism. Legal Advisor Kacir explained that the purpose of these laws was to prevent an elected individual from coming on a Board and hiring of a related individual but such laws would not prevent a present employee from continuing in employment if employed prior to election of related party. A party would be required to abstain when a decision involved a related party.

Director Kohutek stated that the atmosphere at this Board meeting was very good and encouraged continued good cooperation.

DIRECTOR VAVRA - He reported that Lodge No. 188, Centerville had expressed an interest in constructing a swimming pool to be financed by the Society. After discussion, it was agreed that the lodge be informed that the Supreme Lodge would welcome representatives of the lodge to appear at the October Supreme Lodge meeting with a proposal, costs and information of the amount of loan needed for consideration by the Board.

He invited everyone to the 3rd Annual Tarok Tournament at Lodge #17, July 18; District I YAD - August 2; and Kolache Festival Saturday, September 12. He informed the Board he will be on vacation August 6 through August 9.

He thanked District VI Director Matt Vanek and members for a job well-done on the Convention planning and organizing of everything and commented that everything went very well.

ANNOUNCEMENT - It was reported that Vice President Gebala will be installed as President of the Fraternal Field Managers Association at the NFCA Annual meeting and the installing officer will be President Leshikar.

ADVERTISING - It was unanimously decided that the proceeds from the advertising material sold by District VI be left with the district to be used as an appreciation dinner for the District VI Convention workers.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set for October 5 and 6, 1992 at 8:30 a.m.

Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 2:40 p.m.

McBride, Gatewood Lead Sales Seminar There are no short cuts to achieving success as an SPJST sales representative. It takes work and a lot of practice---practice meaning repeated sales calls and an ongoing program of continuing education. That was the message delivered by State Field Manager Gene McBride and State Field Representative Keith Gatewood at the SPJST Sales Representative Continuing Education seminar held July 24 and 25 at the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Ten sales representatives, representing Districts Two, Three, Four and Five, attended the meeting.

During the two-day seminar, sales representatives reviewed the basics of life insurance, including sessions covering the differences between term life, whole life and universal life insurance policies. Time was also devoted to the SPJST annuity program and the many long-term investment options it provides for members.

Brother Jerry Prochazka, Lodge 65, Crosby, attended the two-day workshop. Brother Prochazka, who has been a volunteer SPJST salesman for more than thirty years, believes in the power of continuing education classes.

"Even if you think you know the material, a good review doesn't hurt. It's always good to get a new perspective

and one-on-one counseling on the products available through SPJST," he says.

According to Brother McBride, the concept of life insurance has evolved greatly in recent years. "Time was a time---not so long ago---when most members bought life insurance certificates only to provide for the expenses of their last illness and funeral. More often than not, there was precious little---if any---left over once those needs had been met," he says.

Lodge 24 Enjoys Banner Weekend

For members of Lodge 24, Cyclone, one of the best things about the first "Countywide Garage Sale" in March was that is that it gave them some new ideas for their second big sale held July 25 and 26. The July sale, which attracted more than 30 sellers from all over the Central Texas area, also featured a prize drawing, youth bake sale, barbecue plates and sandwiches. Information on SPJST fraternal activities and financial products were also available. Approximately 1,000 shoppers attended the two-day sale.

It should not go without saying that Lodge 24 truly appreciates the support of the community and sister lodges for their continued support of Lodge 24 activities. News From Lodge 32, Victoria Lodge 32 met on July 8th with President Franklin Elles opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence for departed members and roll call of officers.

We are all still on a high and feeling good about the success of the State Convention hosted by District VI. It was truly a wonderful experience for the district to work together and really get to know one another. Again, thanks to everyone who was involved in making the convention such a hit.

President Ladis Navratil called the regular SPJST Lodge No. 87 meeting to order Friday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m.

Our lodge is excited!!!! Academy #177 was the site of the District 2 YAD, and now we look forward to hosting state royalty on Saturday, August 15, 1992. These young people have worked hard to be able to participate at this level of competition, and we hope that you will attend and share in their accomplishments.

Royalty competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a bar-b-que meal with all the trimmings to be served at approximately 6 p.m. Cost will be $4.25 a plate.

After the meal, a dance will be held from 8-12 with music by Firecreek.

The dance is free and open to the public.

196, Houston-West Report Lodge

The third quarterly meeting of Lodge 196 Houston-West was held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2 at the Katy VFW Hall. President Zdenek Nedbalek welcomed the group which included District V Director Louis Hanus and the District V officers. He led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance A moment of silence was observed in memory of Rachel Stutts, mother of Secretary Brenda Pike.

Eleven new members were accepted into the lodge and Treasurer Evelyn Mikeska reported that $25 had been sent to the Scholarship Fund as a memorial of Rachel Stutts.

New business consisted of discussion of the District V Fall meeting to be hosted by Lodge 196, beginning at 11:00 a.m. This is to be in the form of a Family Fun Day with prizes being given in 3 cetegories; Kolache Baking, Needlework, and Horseshoe Pitching.

The needlework includes quilting, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint.

Marie Stayton emphasized that the youth is concentrating on Christmas Ornaments. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m. and will consist of chicken and sausage (barbecued). Drinks will be furnished by the lodge and all mem-

bers attending are to bring covered dishes and desserts for the meal.

Each youth group is to have a booth to display and sell their crafts.

A combination 20th Anniversary of the Lodge and Christmas party will be held on either the 5th or 6th of December, depending on the availability of the hall. This will be announced in a later letter.

The Lodge 196 meeting was adjourned after which the District V officers held their planning meeting for the fall meeting. Refreshments were served to all present and a fellowship hour followed.

By Naomi K. Spencer As previously announced, THE TALENT SHOW of the YEAR is scheduled to take place on August 30th, at Lodge 88, Houston.

At this point, the program has been sufficiently filled so that no further entries will be accepted.

Briefly, the program will consist of a number of skits written by Tillie Helmcamp, and the casts have been filled.

You will also enjoy a number of novelties and other surprises which are in the making. In addition to this, you may depend on Gene Barcak and Roy Stoneker to be in charge of the kitchen where you will find hamburgers and coffee. And, as usual, you will be greeted by Lillie Spies in charge of the pastry counter.

Admission is free; however, your donations of pastry or door prizes will be appreciated.

Sewing Circle

The Ennis Sewing Circle met July 9th. The attendance was rather low with 18 members and 3 guests present.

Our guests were Frances Sparks, Bob Zolanek and Randy Trojacek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited. Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes.

The minutes were approved as read. In the absence of Treasurer Mildred Trojacek, Linda gave the financial report. It was approved as reported.

Sunshine Stacie Hejny sent a get well greeting to Sister Leona Jurica, who was hospitalized lately. Birthday greetings were sent to Sisters Agnes Janecka, Hattie Lekar and Mary Vrla.

These sisters cannot attend our meetings regularly. "Happy Birthday" was sung to July birthday celebrants.

Quilt was quilted for Sister Linda Trojacek. The "White Elephant" sale was held. Tickets for "Krouzek" (Circle) quilt drawing will be for sale at our August 13th meeting. Tickets are $1.00 each, 6 for $5.00. Sister Mary Patak donated 5 pounds of sugar.

We congratulate Sister Sylvia Laznovsky upon her retirement. It will be good to have her among us at our meetings. I'm sure she will not miss the long ride to Dallas daily. Greetings were sent by Sisters Adell Vlk, Vickie Kohn, Libbie Elsik, Annie Kostak, Mary Sebestik and Alice Roberts.

Sister Alene and Willie Skrivanek have been enjoying their triplet grandsons play baseball in Van, Texas. They have been going every week. The Skrivaneks received an invitation to attend the Skrivanek-Zdiadek reunion in Sealy, Texas. They left to attend this reunion and are anxious to find out if any of them are their relations.

Sisters Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell attended the annual Joseph and Kristina Zemanek reunion at Lake Cypress Springs on the Fourth of July weekend. Attending were 63 adults and children.

Vlasta Getchell from Shelby Town, Michigan; her daughter, Debbie Novak and son, John Novak, visited with Rosie Bednar, Mildred Trojacek, Van and Pat Fowler and children, Julia and Michael.

Sisters Mary Sebestik and Alice Roberts have returned from a trip to Czechoslovakia and Poland. We were welcomed with hugs and kisses and flowers by 11 relatives and friends at the Prague Airport. They waited patiently at the airport because our plane was 1-1/2 hours late arriving in Frankfurt, Germany. We missed our plane to Prague and waited an hour for another plane. It was so wonderful to visit relatives in Kvasice, near Kromeriz, Kladno (our father's homeland), Liberec and Frydlant, Czechoslovakia and friends in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Lublin, Warsaw and Biadiata-Podlaska (near the Russian border), Poland. Everyone was so gracious and happy to have guests from America. They served very good meals. In Prague, we rode one of the fastest escalators in the world. It felt like riding a roller coaster. Mary and I decided that we do not ever want to take that ride again.

We wish the best to retiring Editor of the Vestnik, Rudy Sefcik, and his dear wife Maxine. They shall be missed.

We wish the best for the newly-elected Editor Brian Vanicek and are looking forward to working with him.

I want to thank Sister Georgia Tupy for giving me the information from the July meeting.

Czech Class at Alief

Another

Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering basic Conversational Czech course this fall at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the South and Alief-Clodine on the North, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in southwestern Houston. The first lesson of this 12week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on Wednesday, September 9, 1992, and henceforth once a week, always on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Dear Members, The Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club met on July 21, 1992. There were 14 members, 7 members, 7 adults and one visitor, Kelsi Bouska, present.

Our youth had a special prayer, led

by Sandra Trickett, for our dear friend and Lodge Member Ira Niswanger.

Our club extends our sympathy to Blance Lewis and the Niswanger family.

We just returned from camp at Camp Val Verde. We all had a good time and we thank Bessie Petr for all of her hard work.

The youth donated door prizes to the Moody Care Center for the month of July. We are going to donate watermelons for August.

After our meeting we had a birthday supper with cake and ice cream for everyone present. We had a good time and enjoyed the social.

The birthday cake was brought by Jodi McAdams and the game was brought by Alicia Neslony. The door prize was won by Michael Tierce and Brian Tierce.

30 Reveals Several DYAD Achievers

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, July 26, 1992, District VI met for its Annual Youth Club Achievement Day. It was held at the Taiton Community Center hosted by Lodge No. 30, Taiton Youth Club.

Youth from Hallettsville Lodge No. 4, El Campo-Hillje Lodge No. 40, East Bernard Lodge No. 28 and Taiton competed in Crafts, Points, Talents, Scrapbook, Poster, and Royalty.

The overall Junior Point winner was Curtis Dorotik and the overall Senior Point winner was Lenice Kaspar.

Our first place talent winners are: 68 Nicholas Vahalik, 9-11 Crystal Roye, 12-14 Jeanine Dorotik, 15-17 Lenice Kaspar.

Scrapbook and Poster was won by Taiton Lodge No. 30 in first place, and Hallettsville Lodge No. 4 in second place.

We had three Queen Contestants in our Royalty Competition. Sharon Borak from El Campo-Hillje got second runner-up. Valerie Roye from Taiton got first runner-up. Lenice Kaspar also from Taiton won the title 1992-93 District VI Queen.

The District VI YAD was a success thanks to Karen Kaspar and Marcy Dorotik for all their hard work.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 92 in Fort Worth, Texas wish to express our heartfelt sympathy on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of JUSTINA KOCI, a retired medical secretary who died Tuesday, July 21, 1992 at an Aspermont nursing center, at the age of 80.

Ms. Koci was born in Fort Worth and lived here until moving to Aspermont.

Sister Koci was a 1929 graduate of Northside High School, and was a member of SPJST Lodge 92.

Survivors include a brother, Rudolph Koci, Jr. of Benbrook; and two sisters, Mary Palachek of Fort Worth and Florence Greer of Hurst.

Graveside service was held at 1 p.m.

Thursday, July 23, 1992 at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mount Olivet Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rosary was recited Thursday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Davis Funeral Home Chapel in East Bernard.

Funeral services for Sister Martha A. Matula were held Friday, July 24 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, Texas. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard with Father Gerald Cernoch officiating.

Her husband, Willie J. and son, Rudolph W. Matula preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Henrietta Forrest of Groesbeck, Victoria Holley and husband Dwayne of Pearland; three sons, Earnest F. Matula

Brother Bailey was born to C.W. Bailey, Sr. and Beulah Barton Bailey in Bertram. He grew up in Austin, and graduated from Georgetown High School and Southwestern University.

An Army veteran of World War II, he married Marie Petzold on October 30, 1947. He had lived in Temple since October 1947, and was a member of First United Methodist Church and the local Elks Lodge.

Survivors are his wife, Marie Bailey of Temple; and a son, David Walter Bailey of New Braunfels.

Graveside, services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 24 at IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas with Dr. Jack Riley officiating.

The officers and members of Lodge No. 25, Ennis wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of MELVIN HASKOVEC. A Christian Burial Mass was held for Brother Melvin Haskovec, age 75, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 1992 in the Lawrence Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Williams as celebrant.

Interment followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery with Freddie Jakubik, Pete Mach, Wesley Smid, Harry Mach, Edward Luksa, Marvin Adams and Robin Haskovec serving as pallbearers under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Home.

Brother Haskovec passed away Tuesday morning, July 28, 1992 in the Baylor Medical Center of Ennis. Born June 17, 1917 he was the son of Frank F. and Mary Luksa Haskovec. On May 3, 1942, he was married to Otilie Honza in St. John Church.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 25 and the Knights of Columbus. He was a retired machine operator from Ennis Business Forms.

LeSikar se narodil roku 1806 na morayskoeeskem pomezi ve vsi Herborticich. Jeho otec byl silnYm protestantem, matka mirnou katoliakou a rozdil naboiensky byval ptieinou eastYch ruznic mezi rodiai, co2 ptisobilo tisnive na jemnou dui hochovu. Kdy2 Josefovi bylo 17 let, zemtel mu otec. a je2to byl ji2 vyueen, vydal se na zkuSenou do Uher. Tarn, jak vzpominal, zazil nejkrasnej§1 Leta mladi a poznal trochu politieke svobody, po ni2 od to doby neprestal tou2it. Po dvou letech pobytu v Uhrach musil se vratit. aby se prihlasil k vojenske slu2be, a aby nedostal bily kabatec, radeji se ozenil a zaeal samostatnou 2ivnost krejeovskou ve vsi Nepomuku. Je2to byl velkYrn atenatem a dobrYm pisatem, obstaraval za starostu takf-ka vSechna f-izeni a tim si te2 finanane vypornahal.

V to dobe obdriel od studujicich v Uhrach knihu "Slavy dcera", kterou se nemalo potesi1, neb byl silne vlastenecky zaloien. JO jsem jim amysly ty neschvaloval jak z ohledu zdravotnich, tak take z ohledu na surovost a nevzdelanost tamniho obyvatelstva a koneane, Mad'ati po jejich (!) nezdatene revoluci Slovany a Nemce nenavideli a vkemoine ptikoti jim ainili.

Me varovani vkak bylo by morale, kdyby se mi nedostal do rukou opis dopisu protestantskeho kneze Arnokta Bergmanna, pochazejiciho ze Zadudova u Mnichova Hradikte.

Dopsal jsem si o prirvodni list i svoji 2ivnastku jsem ji2 prodal, ale moje man2elka nemela chuti sve rodne mesteeko opustit a do nezname zamotske krajiny se pustit a ja, nechteje ji dinit povolil jsem a zastali jsme v nakem dosavadnim `blahobytu'.

Ostatni rodiny, celkem kestnact, vydaly se koncem roku 1851 pies Hamburk na cestu do Texasu. Byli to prvni vystehovalci z vkchodnich Cech a Moravy a nevedelo se vabec, zdali se pied tou dobou nekterS, Cech do Ameriky vystehoval, nebof urady ka2dou zpravu o stehavani se do Ameriky tiumily, ba kladly vystehovalciim viselike preka2ky. V Hamburku padli nagi ubozi vystehovalci do rukou nejakemu Hermanovi, kterY je na oko obstojnYmi kontrakty pies Anglii do Liverpoolu vypravil, tam jim v§ak byly daily kontrakty jine, dostavali Spatnou, zkaienou potravu a ka2cla rodina musila si vatit sama. Jejich lod' Victoria byla jii prepinena Ireany a tim se stalo, ie z naSich vystehovalcu na to ceste, ktera trvala sedmnact cela polovina zemrela a na§la hrob y e vinach oceanu. Z nedostatku pen& si koupil k jizde mexikanskeho konika, ktery vaak slotil sve btime, kdykoliv a kdekoliv se mu uzdalo, nedbaje, zdali s tim mistem bude jezdec spokojen. Pozdeji ptikoupil k nemu par anit si byl vedom, to jeden z nich se obiral jit myalenkami o pomijejicnosti tohoto sveta, cot svemu novemu panu brzy dokazal odchodem z tohoto slzaveho WW1.
