COMMENTS

The seven SPJST District Youth Achievement Days for 1992 are now history, and our members plus the entire Youth Department are looking forward to State YADs; State Royalty on Saturday, August 15 at Lodge No. 177 in Academy and State YAD (arts and crafts, Beseda, individual and group talent, special category) on Sunday, August 16 at Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. (Refer to the schedule, etc. in this issue.)

If the past State Youth Achievement Day attendance is any indicator of the interest our members, especially parents and entire SPJST have in these events, then we can expect to see the viewing area filled to capacity both days.

Our youth look forward to these friendly and fraternal days of sincere brotherly and sisterly competition and deserve the attention of our elder members.

Remember just by the mere fact of entering these contestants makes everyone a winner in the long-run; there are no losers.

Coincidently, the 1992 Summer Olympics are in full swing at the present time in Barcelona, Spain and there, if no where else, we can see an example of true sportsmanship and friendly sincere competition.

Many of our members and readers surely followed the gymnastic competition of both girls and boys. (The routines are almost identical with the Sokol gymnastic exercises.)

In the case of the girls' competition Kimberly (known as Kim) Zmeskal pronounced (Zmeshkal) of CzechMoravian descent from Houston was the World Champion and leader of the six-girl team of gymnasts and yet, even though disappointed in her performance, she showed what true sportsmanship really is and accepted her defeat with grace and dignity and so did all the other gymnasts.

Let us all take a lesson from these contestants in whatever field they entered. May they all have bright futures.

While we are on the subject of gymnastics, we remind you that the gymnasts of the Sokol West unit perform each year in the Westfest Cultural program; they will perform both days this year. Additional information pertaining to Westfest follows: ***

WEST, TEXAS celebrates its Centennial (100th since its founding) this year--1992.

Labor Day Weekend September 4th, 5th and 6th, 1992 captures Czech flavor in food, festival and dance.

Since 1976 people from all over Texas have converged on the Central Texas town of West, located 15 miles north of Waco on 1-35. Over 30,000 people come during Labor Day Weekend to enjoy Westfest where they find family fun in a blend of food, culture and dance with a Czech-Moravian flair.

Westfest, a non-profit organization, was organized to preserve the CzechMoravian heritage of the community and to raise funds for community projects. Funding from Westfest enabled the city to purchase land for future development, construct a ball park, and build a community center which is

used by the senior citizens. Westfest has also donated money to organizations such as Special Olympics, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, West Czech Folk Dancers, Sokol West, Westfest Scholarship program and others.

It all kicks off on Friday night with the only Country and Western format during the festival. Dancing starts at 6:00 p.m. and the crowning of Miss Westfest will be at 7:00 p.m. Grounds will be open until 12 midnight.

At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday the Westfest parade begins. The parade is one of the largest in Central Texas featuring beautiful floats, marching bands, clowns and much more. After the parade it's off to the Westfest grounds located one mile south of town to enjoy the rest of the day. (The recent State SPJST King, Queen, Duke and Duchess as well SPJST local lodge youth clubs will take part in the parade.)

At the grounds you'll find a variety of things to do and see. Browse through the large arts and crafts tent where over 100 artists and craftsmen present a variety of works.

The cultural tent has a full two-day schedule where you can sit back and enjoy the colorful assortment of ethnic dancing, singing and gymnastics and beautiful authentic costumes. (This year there will be many SPJST singers, a large variety of dancers plus musical/ vocal groups participating in the cultural program.)

In one of the two dance areas, you can sip your favorite beverage while you listen to some of the top polka and waltz bands around.

If food is your fancy, then Westfest is the place for you. You can choose from several varieties of sausage cuisine or enjoy the many types of Czech pastries. Over 25 food booths serve a variety of items.

We have not forgotten the kids at Westfest while you find a large supervised area just for them. Games, rides and petting zoo are some of the things you will find in this area.

On Saturday and Sunday, there is a Horseshoe Pitching Contest and on Sunday the Kolache 5000 Meter Run starts at 8:00 a.m. The Kolache Baking Contest will be held on Sunday.

Admission is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for children 6-12, under 6 are free with an adult. Free air-conditioned shuttle buses will transport you to and from the downtown area to the festival grounds. Parking at the grounds is limited and cost $1.00 per car. Hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. each day.

Lodge Held July Meeting Buckholts

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Plans Family Day Dear Members: Members, their families or guests are cordially invited to our Family Day on Sunday, August 9th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. Refreshments will be served beginning at 12 noon and a barbecue brisket and sausage dinner will be served beginning at 12:30 p.m. Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring desserts. A short meeting will be held and our 50-year members honored. The youth club has games and entertainment planned and door prizes will be given. Hope to see you on August 9th.

The Buckholts Lodge No. 15 met on Sunday, July 19, 1992 at 3:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by.

President Gladys Allison. Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by a moment of silence for our deceased members.

Minutes were read from our previous meeting and were approved.

Reports from the bar, kitchen and entertainment committee were given and also approved.

President Allison read a report from TU Electric on ways we can cut the cost of electricity.

A report on the convention was given

by Charlsie Svetlik and Sidonia Svoboda.

Mr. Joe Zajicek, who is on the Property Committee, reported that he had purchased two new ceiling fans to replace the burned out fans.

We were sorry to hear of the loss of Brother Frank Orsag. It was also reported that Brother Jack D. "Grandpa" Ruzicka was rushed to the hospital. He is able to be back home now and doing better.

Remember our next meeting will be August 9 at 3:00 p.m.

Ed Scaff from Burnet and Randy Gaas from Caldwell were celebrating their birthday on the day of the New Tabor Tarok Tournament.

They received many birthday wishes and we sang the birthday song to them.

Lodge 35, Elk Meeting Report The July lodge meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

The membership was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Charlene Stead.

A moment of silence was observed for Sister Edna Tepe.

The minutes of the June meeting were read by Secretary Virlene Kelley and were approved.

Treasurer's report was given by Verna Pavelka which was approved as read.

Youth Leader Dawn Pavelka reported that the youth club had 13 members, 6 adults, 3 social members and 2 guests present at their meeting.

They discussed camp forms and preparations for leaving for camp. They will leave Friday morning and return Monday at noon. They have a cake walk planned for August 1st.

Our July birthdays were for Henry Breitkreutz, Amy Dennis and Justin Adler.

Fortunately, the Sunshine Committee had no one on their sick list.

Under unfinished or old business, Vernon Wood again requested help from the membership on his report to the Home Office.

There was no new business.

The youth door prize was won by Charlene Stead and the adult door prize was won by Verna Pavelka.

Since we somehow overlooked honoring our fathers on Father's Day, gifts were awarded by drawing names. Honored were Henry Breitkreutz, Ernest Banik, Gene Kelley and Roger Easter.

Our meeting was adjourned.

40 El Campo-Hillje Contributes $200 Lodge

The regular monthly meeting was called to order after the social games.

President Rita Vanek led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members and, especially for Willie Halla, Dudley Carroll, Daniel J. Pustejovsky and Matilda Stropek who passed away since our May meeting.

Leona Macha, secretary, called roll of officers. All were present except Mary Ann Karasek, youth leader; and James Bacak, trustee.

Minutes of May 18th meeting were accepted as printed in the Vestnik Correspondence received and read included: 1. New Insurance/Annuities and Terminations/Lapses reports for May and June 1992.

2. Notices to Arnold and Annie Hubenak advising them of being 50year members as of January 1, 1987 and January 1, 1989, respectively. Arnold and Annie Hubenak chose the option to receive their 50-year pins in the ceremony honoring 50-year members in 1993.

No report from Vice President Bennie Reck.

FAC Dora Lee Kopecky reported on a list of activities scheduled for the state.

Treasurer Madeline Shimek presented financial reports. A complete copy of report is on file.

A motion by Bennie Reck, seconded

by Dora Lee Kopecky, to contribute $200.00 to the Youth Area Adult Center Project. Motion carried.

The members discussed and temporarily planned an all day garage sale to be held at the lodge hall renting spaces at $10.00; date to be set at next meeting.

The president reminded us of our District VI YAD to be held at Taiton on Sunday, July 25th. Registration at 11:00 a.m.

The meeting adjourned with Kevin King winning the door prize.

Informative Meeting Of Lodge 66, Waco Dear Members: Our meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m.by President Jim Locke.

The flags were presented by Dillon and Ashley Locke; also, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dillon Locke and Youth Club Motto by Ashley Locke.

Members stood for a moment of silence in memory of deceased members: Brother Clarence Janek, Brother Edmund Kudelka and Brother Jimmy Whitley. May they rest in peace.

Sister Jeanette Smith called the roll of officers and all were present, except Gladys Yates and Leona Nors.

We had two visitors - Mr. and Mrs. Jodie McAdams.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from the Arthur Schiemenzs for the use of the hall for their anniversary. A thank you card was read from Supreme Lodge for the scholarship donation in memory of Clarence Janek and also a card was read from the Clarence Janek family.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz read the minutes of our board meeting. All anniversaries will now be booked on Sundays.

Sister Lucille Cervenka gave the Entertainment Committee report. She thanked Ira Niswanger for placing new locks on cabinets, and Arthur Langlotz for spraying.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz gave the FAC report. There were 21 persons present at the July 13th social game night. Our next social game night will be August 10th at 7:00 p.m. Bring a snack.

by Joann and Jerry Fabrygel had quietly entered the hall during the meeting and did they put on a rousing performance. It began with a ribbon dance (Maypole). The music to this dance was an Austrian leandler. Other selections were the Chicken Dance, Herr Schmidt, Bunny Hop, and the old favorite Annie in the Cabbage Patch (Sla Naninka do Zeli). Visitors had been invited to watch the performance and the group gave several encores for the benefit of late corners. Afterwards they enjoyed cookies and punch.

Thanks to the young dancers and the Fabrygels for this performance. They all wear a Texas version of the "kroj" (Czech national costume) and are a colorful group-- ages range from five to fourteen years. We'll keep you informed on their future appearances at area events. Members of the group, all from the Richmond-Rosenberg-Needville-Guy-Damon area, are: Beth Maroul, Kevin Grandjean, Michael Witek, Julie Dirba, Michelle Witek, Aaron Pavlicek, Donna Syzdek, J.C. No. 92, Fort Worth News Lodge

Dear Members and Friends: I am sure all of the members have been reading the nice articles that Brother Rudy Sefcik has on page 2 in the Vestnik. They are always very interesting and informative. He stated that some members cash in their polices because maybe they need the money for some reason or other, but it is better to borrow on the policy rather than lose membership in the SPJST. One thing a person should do is to make sure that when you are called to leave this earth that one shouldn't leave the burden to someone else to pay the expenses. Life insurance is cheap so try to protect yourself and your family. I am not a life insurance salesman but I always try to talk to some people to take out life insurance.

I know times are hard but maybe we can do without some items which we really don't need.

I know that we are here on earth for a short time and should enjoy life, but on the other hand, it's like one presidential candidate said: "We should better the nation, if possible." I hope someone will better the United States back like it was a few years ago. We should be Number One, we are Number Eleven in the world.

Our meeting on July 12 was well attended and several things were discussed. Brother Al Kercho, the chairman of Czech Heritage Day of Lodge 92 on September 12, has things

lined up well and the members have volunteered to help any way they can.

The trustees really got on the ball and several things talked about a year or so ago have been done and other things will start. Be sure to attend our dances and see the improvements; also the meetings should be attended in order to keep our lodge growing.

Tuesday, July 14 the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 had guests from the Dallas Circle and a delicious meal was served to them; also several played lots of games. We appreciate all of you coming and you are welcome back any time. I enjoyed meeting several of the ladies and men; gatherings such as these are the only way we get to see each other.

On July 16 Sister Millie Kubala celebrated her 95th birthday; she is the mother of several children who hosted a dinner and dance. May you have many more birthdays!

We hated to hear about the death of Evelyn Spacek's brother-in-law, Brother Spacek, who passed away in Bellville, Texas.

We all will try to help Brian Vanicek any way possible to make him a good editor of the Vesntik after Brother Rudy Sefcik retires.

The youth club gave a nice report on how they came out in the youth activity day.

Remember, the next meeting will be August 9th. All of us need to get organized for the September 12 Heritage Day. Ladies: remember to wear your kroj (costume) and the men their vests because there will be prizes given away.

The $6.00 admission for all day and dancing to two bands (the Texas Dutchmen from Houston, and the Country Boys from Ennis). Remember, the extra price for adult meal ticket will be $5.50 and for children it will be a lot less.

Happy birthday to all who had a birthday in June and July.

Members in rest homes are missed but not forgotten. We send our love to you and may you have good health.

Our members, Josephine and Frank Prochaska, have been traveling quite a lot; first to Bermuda, then to New Orleans, Louisiana and now to the west coast in California to visit family and friends.

A P.O.L.K.A. of America Club will be organized in our area so if you wish to find out more about it, ask some of the members in your lodge who have flyers on this club.

While he was climbing out and dusting himself off, a deputy sheriff came by to investigate. "You've been drinking," the deputy asked. "Of course, I've been drinking," he answered. "What do you think I am, a stunt man?"

Lodge 156 in Baytown met for our quarterly meeting on July 21, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. at Murray's Restaurant.

We had ten members and two social guests present.

We are fortunate to have seven new members and also unfortunate to have lost one of our members, Ann Harvey,

who passed away July 2, 1992 at the age of 74. We extend to her family our sympathy.

We discussed a number of topics and also enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Our next meeting will be September 29th at Ben and Ellen Pyle's home.

#177 To Host State Royalty And --You're Invited!!!

Our lodge is excited!!!! Academy #177 was the site of the District 2 YAD, and now we look forward to hosting state royalty on Saturday, August 15, 1992. These young people have worked hard to be able to participate at this level of competition, and we hope that you will attend and share in their accomplishments.

Royalty competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a bar-b-que meal with all the trimmings to be served at approximately 6 p.m. Cost will be $4.25 a plate.

After the meal, a dance will be held from 8-12 with music by Firecreek.

The dance is free and open to the public.

We look forward to seeing all participants, family, and of course you on August 15th!!

Another Czech Class at Alief Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering basic Conversational Czech course this fall at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the South and Alief-Clodine on the North, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief in southwestern Houston. The first lesson of this 12week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on Wednesday, September 9, 1992, and henceforth once a week, always on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

We also discussed activities for the upcoming camp such as games, crafts, hiking, archery, horseback riding, and canoeing.

For teen camp, a rope course is planned along with arts and crafts projects to be done by campers.

For junior camp, a carnival will be set up and we look forward to having a lot of fun with the kids.

We got a lot accomplished during our first meeting and we now realize how much work is required in advance to set up camp. We look forward to seeing everyone there!!

Youth Attends First Time Camp

Dear Readers, My first time to go to camp was fun.

The District I Youth Clubs went to Camp Val Verde on July 21st through July 24th. We went horseback riding and I was scared. We also went canoeing, swimming, hiking, and worked on craft.

When we went hiking, Lana and Davonna scared us at the two-story house by telling us a scary story about it. We also went to cookouts at the river. We made smores and they were delicious.

I had a lot of fun and I plan to go again next year.

Marek Receives Recognition I would like to share some good news about one of our youth club members of Robstown Lodge No. 117.

Her name is Jennifer Marek and she has been a youth club member for 10 years and an SPJST member since birth.

Jennifer recently attended the Drum Major/Auxiliary Camp (Flag Corp) held at Texas A&I University. She received a plaque for the "Best Solo Routine" (Garth Brook's, "The River") and a ribbon for being the "Most Outstanding" in her advanced class. The team also received a plaque for the "Best Team Salute." This was Jennifer's second year to attend this camp and to win the award for talent.

The talent contest as well as all awards are chosen by the staff.

Jennifer attends Bishop High School, and will be in the 11th grade. She is involved in many school activities; UIL Calculator Team, Prose, Poetry, Keyboarding. She is also a member of the Flag Corp and Band.

Jennifer's parents are Bill and Kathryn Marek. Her grandparents are Edwin and Betty Jurica. Jennifer, her mother and grandmother are members of Robstown Lodge 117 and her grandfather is a member of Corpus Christi Lodge 79.

Jennifer is a very active member of the Youth Club.

Letters District 2 Youth Club Officers Hold Pre-Camp Meeting A pre-camp meeting was held on Sunday, July 20, 1992, at the home of District 2 DYC Patsy Koslovsky.

Present were District 2 Youth Club Officers: Lori Greger, Carey Holman, and Christy Fritz. This was our first official meeting as officers of the District 2 Youth Club. Since we were elected in the Spring District meeting, we were all excited about getting together on our first order of business camp. Dear Readers, This has been a busy summer for me as an SPJST member.

June 14-17, I helped at the SPJST State Convention. I met lots of nice people and enjoyed it. Right after that, June 19-21, my mother and I went to District VI SPJST Summer Camp at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. I swimmed, hiked, did craft, went canoeing, played games, and had a super time.

Now, I am preparing for our District VI YAD on July 25th. Hope to see you there.

Dear Readers, The July 1, 1992 youth meeting of Lodge 25 was started at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

We discussed camp, YAD and a pool party at the Sokol in Ennis. After the meeting we helped clean the hall.

Camp was a lot of fun and tiresome.

I enjoyed everything at camp, especially horseback riding and hiking.

YAD was also fun. I won first place in Science and Education so I am going to State.

Rock Youth Plan Summer Trip

Sunday, July 19, 1992 the youth of Lodge 187, Round Rock met at the home of our leader, Sharon Holman, for our monthly meeting and social.

There were ten youth, seven adults and one guest present.

Before our meeting we had a pleasant time swimming in Mrs. Holman's pool. After our social hour, we had a short meeting and refreshments.

During our meeting, we discussed the District II YAD which was held on July 12 and also the District II trip which will be on Monday, August 3 at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. All members, at the meeting, plan to attend.

The meeting adjourned. The next scheduled meeting is Sunday, August 23rd.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I just came back from having a great time at Camp Val Verde. We went swimming, canoeing, horseback riding and hiking.

One night we went on a night hike to "Christy's Crossing." I was really scared at first. But then I had an exciting time when Mrs. Susan Skrabanek told us a ghost story at the Indian burial grounds. I think that was my favorite activity at camp.

Dear Readers, The Teen Group of Lodge 84 has been active this past month.

On July 17-20 we went to District III Camp at Val Verde. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves while participating in activities like horseback riding, canoeing, archery, swimming and arts and crafts. Our nights were filled with hikes, volleyball games and a scavenger hunt.

This past weekend was our teen trip.

We spent Friday and Saturday at Lake Texoma. Everyone got a chance to water-ski, knee-board and ride on the ski-rocket.

August 1 -- the Princess Ball, our annual fund-raiser. During that night we discover who will be the new 1992-93 Lodge Queen and King.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped make these weekends possible.

The past two weekends have been a huge success and I'm sure the Princess Ball will be just as successful.

Snook Youth Attend Summer Camp Dear Vestnik Readers, July 21 through July 24, District I went to camp at Camp Val Verde. We really had a good time this year. We went swimming, hiking, canoeing, and my favorite which is horseback riding.

We went on several cookouts.

Ethyl Rife was my cabin counselor.

She was really super. Mrs. Ann Schoeneman from Lodge 9 in Snook showed us some neat crafts. We decorated bags and made picture frames to go around our Indian pictures.

Mrs. Velek was born November 17, 1903 in West where she lived all of her life. She was employed as a nurse's aide for a number of years at West Rest Haven; and was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, and SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Emmett (Dorothy) Barron and Ruth Johnson, both of Waco and Rosie Thrower of Houston; a sister, Marie Buckness of Elm Mott; a brother, Willie Soukup of Robinson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family has designated for memorials to West Community Hospital or the individual's favorite charity.

Sister Zulik was born on November 11, 1911 in Zionsville, Washington County, Texas. She was the daughter of the late William Keeler and Louise Sternber g Kettler. She attended the Harrisburg School, was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church of Zionville. On February 14, 1937 she married Joseph (Jay) Zulik.

She and her husband owned and operated Jay's cafe in Brenham.

Sister Zulik was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, Lillie Lorenz, Selma Gaskamp, Emma Kettler; two brothers, Alfred Holle and Edmond Holle.

Survivors include four sisters, Zelone Schroeder and Carla Plachu, both of Brenham, Meta Koerth of Lano and Dorothy Wiederholt of Houston.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, April 20 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Edwin Lampe officiating. Interment followed in Prairie Lee Cemetery.

Brother Etlinger was born June 13, 1938 in Bellville to parents Pete and Elsie (Prazak) Etlinger. He was raised in Bellville and was Valedictorian of the Bellville High School Class in 1956.

He was a member of the Texas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. He was also president of the Austin County Burial Association, and a member of the Bleiblerville SPJST Lodge No. 33. He achieved this despite the handicap of polio, which he contracted by the age of 10.

Peter Etlinger is survived by his parents, Pete and Elsie Etlinger; and one sister, Karen Etlinger, all of Bellville.

Mrs. Pechal was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the United States with her family at age 3. She married John Pechal on November 13, 1920 in Bell County, Texas. She was a member of the Brethren Church in Temple and a charter member of the Riverside Home Demonstration Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Pechal, on June 21, 1985.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m.

Saturday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton, Texas with Dr. John Bravenec officiating. Burial was held in Bellwood Park in Temple.

Survivors include two sons, Johnnie Pechal and Jerome Pechal, both of Belton; and a daughter, Lorene Lueck of Cottonwood, Arizona; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge No. 9 of Snook, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed brother ERVIN SEE, SR., 74 of Snook, Texas.

Funeral services were held at First United Church in Bryan with Rev. Charles Stack officiating. Burial was in the Snook Cemetery.

Brother See died Sunday afternoon, July 19, 1992. He was a lifelong resident of Snook, where he was a farmer and rancher.

Brother See was a member of the First United Church of Christ and SPJST Lodge No. 9 of Snook. He graduated from Caldwell High School and also attended Texas A&M University.

He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and for his love of sports and dominoes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Adam and Minnie See; two brothers, Edwin See and John See, Sr. and a sister, Lillie See Weisse.

Survivors include his wife, Vlasta Kulhanek See; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ervin and Diane See, Frank and Maggie See and James See, all of Snook; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Elaine and Weldon Ginzal of Richardson, La Val and Bobby Seigert of Bryan, Sara and James Thompson of Victoria, Marlyn and Larry Zacheck of Caldwell and Mary See of Houston; one sister, Emily Metcalfe of Edwardville, Illinois; one brother-in-law and sisterin-law, J.W. and Lillie Edmonson of Snyder; 17 grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Brother Maly was born June 22, 1914 in Shiner, Lavaca County, Texas and had lived in Roanoke for 53 years, where he was a dairyman.

He was married to Natalie Maly for 19 years.

Brother Maly was a member of KJT No. 54, SPJST Lodge No. 154, and a veteran of Foreign Wars.

Rosary was recited on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Mount Olivet Funeral Home Chapel led by Father Baltasar Szarka.

Mass was held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in St. George Catholic Church with Father Kent Robertson officiating.

They formed later the Great Moravian Empire which was christianized by St. Cyril & Methodius in the 9th century. Great Moravia covered Slovakia, Southern Poland, Ruthenia, whole of present Hungary, parts of northwestern Yugoslavia, Bohemia & Moravia itself. When Great Moravia was destroyed by Asiatic Hungarians, Slovaks were enslaved for thousand years by Hungary, while Moravians became a part of Premyslide Dukedom of Bohemia. In 1526 both Czechs & Slovaks became subjects of Ferdinand First of Austria & stayed under Habsburg rule until the end of WWI in 1918. The Republic of Czechoslovakia was born on 28th of October of the same year.

St. Cyril and Methodius are national saints of Czechoslovakia, thus Czech people and representatives of other Slavic nations gloriously celebrated their Millenary arrival to Great Moravia at Velehrad Shrine - the fabled capital of the long gone Great Moravian Empire on July 5th 1863. Great annual celebrations of the apostles of Sla y s at Moravian Velehrad in the years that followed became the symbols of Slavic unity & the same principle governs our annual St. Cyril & Methodius Heritage Day celebration here in Houston.

Our beloved Bishop John L. Morkovsq (Requiescat in Pace) devoted much of his precious time to this unique event which is perpetuating well & would do so in the future because of a strong dedication of many Czech-Americans to our Czech Heritage.

According to a study by Texas Education Agency in Austin in the early 70's, Czech is the third language of Texas, right after English & Spanish.

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting in the hospitality room of the Silver Eagle Distributors, 1301 White Street, in the Heights area of Houston on Sunday, August 23rd.

The doors will open at 12:00 noon for registration. Fun, fellowship and refreshments from noon until 2:00 p.m. will take place. Everyone who has an interest in Czech history, customs, tradition or Czech family genealogy or enjoys Texas style Czech relaxation is cordially invited. Czech Heritage Society News

The Victoria County Czech Heritage Society met June 18, 1992 at Knights of Columbus Hall. A covered dish dinner was enjoyed by all present.

The business meeting was opened by President Marjorie Matula.

Ella Arnold read the minutes and Joe Pustka presented the financial report.

Members were reminded that more recipes were needed to order to complete the VCCHS Cookbook in time for the Czech Festival; the deadline for submitting recipes was set for July 1, 1992.

The Society welcomed new members Fred Kubesch and Sallie Wendt.

A progress report was given on the Strnadel Research materials by the president. The material which was handed over to the society late last year has been translated from the Czech language to the English version and is now being indexed before printing begins, hopefully by early fall. The history will dwell on the emigration to Texas from the Mistek district (Moravia 1856 - 1900); once completed, this book will be available to the public for sale by VCCHS. The society will handle the sale of these books.

Festival Chairman Joe Janak discussed and passed out preliminary brochures for the October 25, 1992 VCCHS Festival.

Theofil Kocian reported visiting with Mr. Charles Strelec at Linwood Place.

Mr. Strelec enjoys speaking with persons of Czech ancestry. Marjorie Huehlefeld, country store chairman, asked everyone to make an item for the country store.

The Fabric of our culture will be using the VCCHS's ticket booth at their show at Victoria Mall, September 10 - 14.

Once again the Directors of Westfest plan to host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the Westfest celebration. The tournament this year will be held at the West Community Center in West, Texas on Sunday, September 6th. The tournament is open to all interested tarock players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $8.00 per person with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. and play starting at 9:30 a.m. Play should conclude about 5:30 p.m.

Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch will be available for purchase at the Westfest grounds. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players.

Pauline Kovar, activity coordinator, says the members of the group talk about the good times in their lives and about the fears, griefs, and anxieties of the present.

The dialogue is a way to validate their feelings and helps bond them to each person in the group.

Mrs. Kovar says that such recall reinforces the feelings that their lives had meaning and helps them realize they hold an important place in the lives of others.

Mrs. Barbara Barnes brought some of her handmade quilts to show the group. The quilts brought back memo-

ries for many of the group. Mrs. Kovar said the memories flooded over the group as they recalled piecing their own quilts, chopping cotton, attending one-room school houses, baking bread daily, washing clothes on a scrub board, butchering hogs, the Great Depression and many more. Everyone learns something from each other about their past and present.

The one to one volunteers also use these topics in their weekly meetings with the residents in their rooms.
