On The Move With Sister Petr

By Brian Vanicek Three generations of Lodge 84 and District III have Sister Bessie Petr to thank for the time and energy she has devoted to the youth over the past 40 years. A youth leader at Lodge 84 since 1952, Sister Petr has also served as District Youth Counselor for the past 11 years. Vestnik visited with Sister Petr at Camp Val Verde this week and talked with her about what it means to be a youth leader.

When we arrived at camp, we found Sister Petr in the mess hall surrounded by campers and leaders, all waiting their turn for advice and direction.

"It's always like this on the first day of camp," observes Sister Petr's husband, Emil Petr. "Bessie's got to let everybody know where they're supposed to be and when they're supposed to be there." On this particular morning, Bessie also had the able-bodied assistance of around 20 District III youth leaders and helpers.

After lunch, we were able to corner Sister Petr for about 15 minutes, during which time we talked about why she does what she does. It didn't take her long to answer, "This has been my life, and I love it," she says.

"I love to work with the youth to put on programs; I love the youth achievement days and I love to go to camp.

"Sometimes people ask me, 'Bessie, don't you get tired of it?'---I don't ever get tired of it. It's always a new day and I wake up excited. I can't wait to see what's going to happen," says Sister Petr.

One of Sister Petr's most enjoyable ongoing projects as youth leader is the Annual Princess Ball at Lodge 84. Income generated from the annual ball goes to support the following year's youth activities. Working together, Sister Petr and Brother James Janousek organized the first Princess Ball in 1956. Janousek went on, in 1966, to become the first State Youth Director.

According to Sister Petr, youth leaders and DYCs are a vital link between the ranks of the younger members and older members of a lodge.

"As a youth leader or DYC, you do your best to develop programs that will give the young people a reason to come to the meetings. And you try to do it in a way that gives them a chanct to have some fun, demonstrate their creativity and at the same time develop an interest in the SPJST."

Fritz named FIC of the Year

By Brian Vanicek The National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors (NAFIC) and the Fraternal Field Managers Association (FFMA) recently named Sister Kathy Fritz as Fraternal Insurance Coordinator (FIC) of the Year. Sister Fritz, who received the citation at the FFMA's annual convention in Nashville is secretary to the vice president of the SPJST Supreme Lodge in Temple, Texas. The citation is awarded on the basis of fraternal involvement and sales achievement.

A Supreme Lodge employee since 1979, Sister Fritz also serves as secretary for Lodge 177, Academy and is lodge youth leader Additionally,

she is first vice president and president-elect to the Fraternal Insurance Counselor section of the Texas Fraternal Congress.

"When we help our young people, we help build a foundation for the future of SPJST," says Sister Fritz. "And, when we sell insurance, we help families establish a firm foundation for their own financial well-being."

In order to qualify for a NAFIC/FFMA award, a fraternal insurance counselor must be a duespaying member of the NAFIC and his/her society must complete the necessary paperwork. The FIC Study Program is available to all SPJST sales representatives. For more information on the FIC study program, contact Kathy Fritz at (817) 773-1575.

NOTICE In last week's issue, our members and readers were informed that they would be notified about the date and address to start sending your material of all types to Vestnik. Please read the following carefully and remember (or clip this out for your reference).

The Supreme Lodge receives quantities of mail everyday and the word "Vestnik" will automatically route your letter to the Vestnik office.

Our new editor and yours truly have agreed that this is the best way of routing the mail to him the most efficient way. In the past too many of our reporters, members and, especially youth members have been sending material in for publication too late in the week, and we have tried to get as many letters published as humanly possible; that will be changing to a certain extent in the future.

2) Double space your writing and make it readable (legible).

3) Use white paper, if possible, and write with ballpoint pen and not pencil.

4) Mail early in the week.

These are some of the things that have come to our attention in the past. and our editor may probably have additional observations to make for your benefit. *** All students of Czech-Moravian descent attending the University of Texas (UT) at Austin are encouraged to fulfill their 2-year foreign language reqirement by taking 2 years of the Czech language being taught at the university. That is what the Czech Chair was established for. Preserve your Czech heritage! *** Unknown to many of our members and readers, the University of Texas at Austin has been teaching the Czech language continuously since 1914.

Your editor, one of the original and present directors of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), wishes to take this opportunity to thank the 26th SPJST Convention and all of the delegates for voting the additional ten thousand dollar-donation to

the endowment for the Czech Chair, and Brother Raymond Holasek for making the motion in June 1992.

This amount places our total amount very near the goal of one million-dollar goal set out at the very beginning of the "Czech Chair" drive. In fact, we may have already reached that goal (we do not have the present total), however, your contributions are continually being requested and gratefully accepted. Any and all donations will be added to the amount and can always be used for additional materials to be used in the Czech language department.

In the next few issues, we hope to bring you articles pertinent to the Czech language at University of Texas and bring you up-to-date as to what the conditions are with the department.

From a personal standpoint, yours truly is pleased that we have accomplished so much for the teaching of the Czech language at UT during the last 24 years while serving as your editor.

Our Society deserves a large amount of credit for this becoming a fact, because, if we total all the donations from SPJST Society, districts, lodges and individuals, we would probably come close to a total of two hundred thousand dollars contributed toward the goal. Our sincere appreciation is also given to Brother Pat and Sister Rose Patak for their great help. ***

Brother Brian Vanicek, new editor, is utilizing the last half of July and the month of August getting better acquainted with our society, going to camp, attending district and lodge affairs, etc. and contributing articles about them. Some appear in this edition; one follows. ***

Lower interest rates reflect market conditions The Supreme Lodge voted at their July meeting to lower interest rates on SPJST annuities and universal life products. The new rates, which go into effect on August 1, will be 6.25 percent on annuities---down from 7.1 percent; and 7.50 percent on universal life policies---down from from 8 percent.

The new rates reflect the Society's conservative response to declining investment returns on bonds and mortgages.

"The rates are still very attractive when you consider conditions in the financial market," says Secretary..

Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. At the end of July, the rate of return on oneyear Treasury bills are approximately 3 1/2 percent. The rate on three-year Treasury bills are approximately 3 3/4 percent. Blnk CDs five years out are about 5 1/2 percent.

According to Brother Mikeska, annuity and universal life interest rates are reviewed on a quarterly basis. "Our prime consideration has always been to conduct our business soundly and ensure the continued financial strength of our members assets and of the SPJST. "By maintaining an adequate margin of assets over liabilities and surplus funds, we are able to achieve a balance in growth, safety of principal and rate of interest return even during times of economic adversity," concludes Brother Mikeska.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Plans Family Day Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthy meeting on Sunday, July 12, 1992 at the City Park Pavilion at 2:00 p.m.

President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order and led the members in prayer and pledge to the flag with Elizabeth Vahalik holding the flag.

Victoria Zak of the Resolution Committee read Resolutions of Sympathy for our departed members, Mary Spanihel, Daniel Cervenka and Toni E. Sitka.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting and reported no correspondence.

District VI FAC Helen Zabransky said she would be attending a seminar in Temple on Saturday, August 8th.

Helen also asked the members to vote between a quilt contest or needlework contest to be held at the fall district meeting. The District VI fall social will be held in Hallettsville at the American Legion Hall on Sunday, November 1st with our lodge and Sweet Home lodge as hosts.

Sunshine Chairman Margaret Smotek reported that the July social games sponsored at Stevens Convalescent Center was well attended with 8 adults and 4 youth club members assisting.

They included Evelyn Holy, Margaret Smotek, Mary Matula, Marlyn Matula, Jo Ann Matula, Susan and Joe Siptak, Patsy Zabransky, Doris Matula, Joshua and Adam Siptak and Nicholas Vahalik. The residents enjoyed themselves and look forward to next month.

Kaspar, visited our youth club and then spoke to us about the upcoming youth activities.

Convention reports were given by our delegates Erwin Holy, Annie Vahalik and Helen Zabransky.

Our Annual Family Day to be held Sunday, August 9th at the American Legion Hall was discussed and planned. The day will begin at 11:00 a.m. with refreshments served starting at noon. A catered barbecue brisket and sausage dinner with trimmings will be served at 12:30 p.m. as usual.

Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring desserts to be served with the meal. A short meeting will follow and our 50year members for 1992 will be recognized and presented their pins. Several door prizes will be given and the youth club will have various types of entertainment.

Youth Leader Jeanette Bender and Assistant Susan Siptak reported on camp and the various activities the youth enjoyed for Family Day, they will set up the tables, provide centerpieces and sponsor games and entertainment.

The members voted to hold the September meeting on the third Sunday of the month. The meeting adjourned.

Refreshments and lunch were served and enjoyed with Doris Matula giving the meal prayer. Out-of-state members attending were Rosemary and Paul Hetzler from Indiana. Door prize winners were adult, Philip Vahalik and youth, Rachel Frese, granddaughter of Albert and Margaret Smotek.

Members, their families or guests are cordially invited to our Family Day on Sunday, August 9th at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. Refreshments will be served beginning at 12 noon and a barbecue brisket and sausage dinner will be served beginning at 12:30 p.m. Ladies of the lodge are asked to bring desserts. A short meeting will be held and our 50-year members honored. The youth club has games and entertainment planned and door prizes will be given. Hope to see you on August 9th.

Lodge 13, Dime Box To Meet Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, July 19, 1992 thirteen members of Lodge 13 in Dime Box met for the regular monthly meeting.

Matt Ford led us in the pledge to the flag.

Sister Dorothy Rackel presided over the meeting due to the absence of our president and vice president.

Roll call of officers and trustees revealed ten present and five absent.

Secretary read the minutes from the June meeting. The treasurer gave her report; all were accepted as read.

The Dime Box community picnic was discussed. All indications show that this will be a well-organized picnic. By the time you read this in the Vestnik, the picnic will be over, but I hope if you were there, that you enjoyed it very much and will return at future picnics.

The lodge will sponsor a NO ALCOHOL DANCE in September. Please watch for further announcements.

Youth Achievement Day (YAD) will be held in Dime Box on August 2. A catered meal will be available, more details in Vestnik.

Our next Lodge 13 meeting will be August 16, 1992. See you there.

Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: Another month has gone by and again, it is time for a monthly meeting.

Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its meeting on the first Sunday, August 2nd.

Convening time will be 2:00 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street. A regular "Order of Business" will be followed with room on the agenda for any new business needing immediate attention.

There will be an after the meeting fraternal hour luncheon.

On Sunday, the 5th of July, the monthly meeting started on schedule.

A report on the SPJST XXVI Convention was given and all regular reports were accepted as made. Under new business, several motions were made and passed to carry on lodge business; one of these motions being a change in door prizes.

The fraternal hour luncheon, with all its donated food, was enjoyed by those partaking.

Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Awards 50-Year Pins El

Members of El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 enjoyed the Annual Family Day on Sunday, June 28 at the American Legion picnic grounds in El Campo. A delicious barbecue chicken and sausage dinner, prepared by Chairman Floyd Shimek and his co-workers Gene Valigura and Bennie Reck, was served to approximately 75 guests and members. Everyone enjoyed the salads and desserts that were brought to be served with the barbecue.

Following the roll call and minutes of the previous meeting, President Reese installed the recently elected youth club officers. These youth should be praised for their dedication to their youth club.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky introduced the YAD queen and king contestants, dukes and duchesses. The members were given the opportunity to hear their speeches. Each young lady and young man was given encouragement with enthusiastic applause.

Naturally, the best of luck was wished to all.

Dear Members: Our meeting July 20 opened with the pledge to our flag.

Secretary Salac read the minutes of the last meeting, also correspondence; a thank you from Judy and Gene Green for cards and remembrances, a thank you from Walter and Leslie Schiebel for help and fun during their 50th anniversary party here, a thank you from Steve and Anne Cowan for the fun trip they had in Nashville, Tennessee. Do you remember they had the winning ticket given during our Czechfest last September?

Sunshine Lady Sister Bessie Tydlaska sent the following cards: get well to Frank Kocian, Stanely Patak, Beulah Horak; a baby congratulations to Wallace and Prissy Maloney; a sympathy card to Judy and Gene Green on the loss of mother. House Committee Adolph Salac thanked Charlie Petr and Sister Evelyn for help in cutting the grass and fixing the air-condition. He also installed a door light and roof repairs will be made.

FAC Faye Rejcek reported on dues sent in for the last two months.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on YAD. Congratulations to District III Queen Meribeth Novak, Duchess Jamie Lyn Novak, District III Neal Andreason and Duke Michael Kenney, all from our Lodge 84. Congratulations also to all of the winners participating from Lodge 84. She also reported that the Juniors had their meeting at Wet 'n Wild on July 13, and the Teens will hold their meeting next Friday night at Lake Texoma on the Matus' house boat. The spaghetti dinner they planned is July 29 and the Princess Ball is August 1st. Sister Bessie reported that District III had 117 campers at Val Verde and a big time was had by all.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council had no report.

The Czech Culture meets August 24 at the Czech Club.

Our Czechfest is September 20th and a final planning committee meets August 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Our next dance is the Princess Ball on August 1st with music by the Music Makers.

August 15 -- music by Alpen Muzikanten September 19 -- Henry Rejcek plays for dancing.

Lodge 88, Houston News Homer and Rita Alexander are very proud of their twelve-year-old granddaughter Julie, the daughter of their son Jim and wife Joan Alexander.

Julie won regional finals and placed third in the national finals held at the Riveria Hotel in Las Vegas recently.

There were 569 girls in this contest.

She is a lifelong member of Lodge 88, and that makes us all happy for the family.

Grandpa Homer is our fraternal activity coordinator (FAC) and Grandma Rita is secretary of the Birthday Club.

Did you ever have anyone say to you: "You made my day." Well, Mrs. Frances Dovrak called me the other day. Her son Henry from Oklahoma had brought her here for a visit. Frances lives with her children. The next morning she was going to her daughter Elsie Kadera's home in McKinney, Texas. She told me she spends her time, at 92 years of age - crocheting, knitting and making lap robes.

Anyway, Frances you made my day.

She also called Rosalee Kostom who's always been so close to the family.

Mr. Victor Janak and wife Evelyn spent a long time in Europe in March 1992, and she gave me a letter which is very interesting to me because the Sustala family was well-known to my ;,...sband (the late Ernest Hanka), so he gave me a copy of it. Mary Sustala

Johnson, who is Victor's mother is very active in the Birthday Club and Lodge 88. The letter which follows is in its entirety:

Visit of the USA Family of the Founder of the Factory As you surely know, last year was the centennial of the death of Ignac Sustala, the founder of the auto-works of Koprivnice. At this memorial meeting, which was scheduled for April 1991, a branch of the Sustala family of Austria was presented by a niece of Ignac Sustala, Helen Richter-Sustala.

A branch of the Sustala family of Houston, Texas was also invited. The political situation (the conflict in the Persian Gulf) prevented their acceptance of the invitation.

On March 16, Mr. Victor J. Janak and his wife Evelyn came to visit Koprivnice. The mother of Mr. Janak (the daughter of a Czech father and mother) was Mary Sustala, born December 21, 1901. She is the offThose deceased since the last meeting are Olga L. Grenwelch, W. Dyess and John Pech.

FAC Homer Alexander, at this time, announced that Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis became grandparents for the first time to a precious little redheaded girl named Jenifer Florence who weighed 6 pounds and 10 ounces.

Their son Gary and wife are the happy parents.

Homer Alexander announced that his next Defensive Driving course will be on July 16 and 17. Ed Zientek brought over 60 pairs of glasses. If you just stop and think, what a nice thing to do.

These glasses are repaired, cleaned and then given to people who need glasses but cannot afford them. Thanks to all who help Homer in this worthy cause.

Marilyn Zelesky is in charge of the youth while our DYC Marie Stayton and Youth Leader Barbara Linney are at Camp Val Verde; that is always something for the children to look forward to. spring of the brother of the founder, Jan Sustala.

During the evening hours, the American guests met with the director of the Tatra Corporation, Mr. Hynek Hanak. He presented them with a video-cassette of last year's celebration with its memorial proceedings.

The following days, the guests were conducted on a tour of the establishment and also a view of the trail run of the manufactured motorized cars and trucks. Then there was the trip to the plant where new ideas of mechanization are carried on and a visit to Technical Museum. The afternoon was devoted to the viewing of the Fojt Museum, the origin or birthplace of Ignac Sustala plant.

Guests became acquainted with the Czech members of their ancestors and expressed their great interest in the accomplishments of progenitors of all the branches of the American family.

It is of interest to note that Mr. Janak still converses with a Koprivnice dialect for he learned it from his grandmother. His wife Evelyn also speaks Czech with a distinct Hanak dialect.

Mr. Victor Janak promised to do whatever can be done to perpetuate an interest in American trade, and assured us that the Tatra has a future and is known throughout the USA. The remainder of his visit to CSFR was given to his relatives of Roznov pod Radhostem. They visited the noteworthy places of our land.

Both of the guests expressed their whole-hearted greetings to the entire Tatra personnel, with a wish for much good fortune from all of his relatives and acquaintances of Houston, where Czechs number over 200,000.

Jiri Tichanek Fojt Museum Koprivnice: March 18, 1992 A visit to Grandma Hanka on July 10, was most rewarding. Evelyn Mikolas and I visited with her which made her so happy. We took her fruit, candy and KOLACHES. She ate before lunch and then ate every bite of her regular lunch in the dining room, which was a surprise to me, but there you can see why she lives so long. We also visited with Mrs. Jurchak. She's the mother of Sydney and Georgie Jurchak, who are very active at Lodge 88.

On July 13, 1992 we had our monthly meeting, with President Jerry Ermis who opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Vincent Hegwood. Our regular flag bearers were late and one was at Val Verde in camp.

In the absence of our Entertainment Chairman Viola Cix, Bennie Kocich, vice chairman, gave the monthly report. He stated they had some good crowds and some not so good. I will start with the August dances since July has almost come and gone. Pick up the folder at our lodge because all the dances through December 31, 1992 are in there:

YAD was held at Lodge 88 on Sunday, June 28. It was well attended and the children performed well.

Karl Lindemann, board chairman, gave a short report. Karl has been ill, but is slowly improving.

Secretary Mildred Holeman will write her report in the minutes.

Gene Barcak reported on our Choral Group, who always acknowledges all invitations. He stated that they would start rehearsing the first Tuesday in August.

Dramatic Club President Naomi Spencer announced that they will present some skits, written by Tillie Helmcarnp, on August 30, 1992. They are busy rehearsing and it's FREE. You cannnot lose. It's on a Sunday at 2:00 p.m. There will be plenty of pastry, and hamburgers, plenty hot coffee and door prizes. If anyone would like to donate something as a door prize, it will be greatly appreciated.

Mary Kosut, our benevolent lady, always does a superb job. She records all the voluntary hours that are spent by all the committees; each committee has a chairman who turns the hours over to Mary.

Several weeks ago Bill and Alice Souchek celebrated their 62nd anniversary. They are two amazing people he had quit driving the car. Monday night at our monthly meeting, they drove up in their car. If it takes courage - they have it! The students in his Czech class will not forget this fine couple. All special occasions are celebrated.

At 2:00 p.m. on July 12, 1992, President Dennis Hermis called our regular monthly meeting to order. We had 42 members and four guests present. All of us stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers revealed that all were present, except Flag Bearer Brian Hermis.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the minutes from the previous month's meeting, which stood approved as read.

Financial secretary's report was given by Rosie Tumis.

Board of trustees and bar reports were given by Henry Hermis, Sr. Youth club report was read by our Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. She reported on our winners, namely: John Buri, Jason Hermis and Amanda Hermis who won in several categories.

She asked our members to save candy /rappers from M&M Mars and Hershey for a fund-raiser for our youth.

Sick Committee reported William, Machacek, Emilie Hamala and Eric Stein were on the sick list. We hope all are well by this time.

We welcomed two new members Sarah Raines and Matthew Anthony Richard -- Sales Representative Rosie Tumis, one; and Sales Representative Robert Kieschnick, one.

Visitors welcomed were Jo Ann Buri, Jo Buri and Joe Gambil. Visitors are always welcome. Thanks for coming to our meeting.

Our delegates to the 26th SPJST Convention in Victoria were: Dennis Hermis, Rosie Tumis, Sidon Tumis and Alice Jochen; they reported a very productive convention. There was much discussion on many issues, but not many drastic changes. We were happy to have the Supreme Lodge officers reelected to their respective offices.

Our great editor, Brother Rudy Sefcik, did not seek reelection and will be succeeded by Brother Brian Vanicek whom we wish tc welcome and will be glad to work with him. But, thank you Brother Sefcik I have really enjoyed writing my letters to you and thank you for your efficiency and pleasant personality at any time I needed any help -- We wish you much happiness in your retirement!

Capsule prize for $70.00 went unclaimed at this meeting due to the absence of James L. Blahuta and Christopher Kubeczka. Next month's prize goes to $80.00; come to our meeting because you could be the lucky one!

Four door prizes went to Agnes Fabacher, Pat Schleider, Lorraine Motl and Robert Kieschnick.

Dear Members and Friends: I arrived home safely after my 3 weeks' visit in St. Louis, in the home of my niece Sister Mary Harrison and family and my sister Micky who lives with them.

I missed our July meeting, but heard that business went on as usual. Our next meeting will be August 9 at 3:00 p.m.

Brothers and Sisters who have been traveling and most of them are at home safely, namely: Jerry and Henrietta Milan, Frankie, Martha and Josh Milan; also Rome, Mila and Paris Milan, attended the Toronto-Canada National Slet. While there, Jerry and Henrietta visited Niagra Falls. Paris was left in Canada in the care of his grandparents Jan and Vlasta Waldauf, and Rome and Mila went on to Cairo, Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Paris on their way to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where they will be joined by Brother Tal and Sister Lesli Milan and Sister Teryn Schwabowski of Chicago.

Jerry anu Henrietta barely made it home and left for Santa Fe, New Mexico where Henrietta autographed her prints.

Carl, Helen, Melissa and Nicole Johnson just returned from a week in Galveston.

Frankie and Martha Milan got to spend some time with his sister Frances Mamula and family in South Bend, Indiana. Josh went on to Pennsylvania to a gymnastic school for 3 weeks.

This weekend, our Volleyball Team is leaving for a tournament at Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi. Frankie, Emil and others will go deep sea fishing while there.

We extend our get well wishes to Brothers Jeff Maly who has been in the hospital several weeks; Frank Kovar was just released after a week's stay and is feeling better; John Pace who had surgery after an accident during a motorcycle race; and to Brother Michael Hennessey who was released from the hospital. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Marcus Kret, named new superintendent of the Whitney schools.

A large group of us attended a wonderful celebration Sunday in honor of Sister Millie Kubala's 95th birthday, held at Lodge 92. She knew the name of everyone present and made you welcome, and she could dance like a pro. A delicious dinner was served and everyone enjoyed dancing to Jodie Mikula's band. We are all waiting for her 100th birthday.

May your good health continue for a long time. God Bless You! Friday morning 17 youth members and chaperones Brother Bobby Cleveland and Sisters Mary Steinman and Cathy Payton left for the youth camp. I know we will hear a lot when they get home.

The latest project for the owner of Patti's Hair Parlor & Etc. is organizing the Queen's Contest for the Old Settlers Reunion, which is the last full week of this month (July 20-25) in Decatur. Queen contestants compete for scholarship money.

Gage is still looking for girls to represent Chico, Paradise and Boyd.

Queen contestants should be between 15 and 23 years old. Those interested in entering the contest should call her at 627-1002.

As a member of the Old Settlers Reunion Board, she's also responsible for organizing reunion activities for July 23, which will feature a 10-piece big band that will play polka and big band tunes.

Gage also keeps busy with various hobbies and activities --- aerobics, canning, catering, dancing, T-shirt painting and yard work. She also likes to hunt, fish and golf when she has the time.

How does Gage do it? How does she keep up with all of her activities?

"I'm not a sitter," she said. "I don't like to just sit and be idle. I like to do things."

Even other people's hobbies keep her busy. Her husband, C.L. Gage Jr., likes racing pigeons. And there's also traveling, when time allows. She said she "loves" to go to Las Vegas, and she recently returned from Branson, Missouri, a popular town for country music artists.

Her family also keeps her busy.

She's been married 14 years to C.L. Gage, who is in the oil and gas business. She also has two stepchildren, Will and Traci Gage.

"I'm very family-oriented," she said.

"We do a lot of things together as a family. I come from a large family myself. There were seven of us --- five girls and two boys. So I've always been that way."

Gage graduated from Northside High School in Fort Worth and became a hairdresser. She said entering the hair business was natural, since two of her sisters were hairdressers.

After starting her career in Fort Worth, she moved to Decatur in 1981.

She opened her own hair business that year and has expanded to include a clothing and jewelry boutique.

As for the future, Gage intends to stay busy and continue focusing on her business.

"I hope to keep expanding and build up a better business," she said.

"We have a good business and I enjoy being around people, so I guess I'll keep my business as long as I can."

Marcus Kret

High School Principal Named New Superintendent Whitney High School Principal Marcus Kret was named the new superintendent of the Whitney schools and given a 2-year contract by the Board of Trustees after Superintendent Hollis Jean announced his retirement. Kret will assume his new duties effective June 30, 1992. This action took place at a regular meeting of the WISD Board of Trustees Monday night.

Kret holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Texas Christian University. He came to Whitney in July 1990 from Boswell High School where he served as high school principal. His experience in the field of education includes assistant principal of Bedford Junior High School, Hurst Junior High School, and Harwood Junior High as well as high school principal at Boswell and Whitney.

Kret stated Tuesday morning that he was excited about his new position at the Whitney schools and is looking forward to the challenge of his new job.

Brother Marcus Kret has been an SPJST Lodge 154 member since age 2 months; and his three daughters, Shelley, Kim and Kristie have been lifetime members.

Brother Kret is the son of Sister Margie Kret and the late Jimmie Kret.

No. 179, Warrenton Meeting Lodge

Dear Members: The past meeting was a very good one for some twenty members. Our delegate, Mr. Arnold Peters, gave his report on the SPJST Convention. This is of interest to some members as to what the organization is doing.

Due to vacation time, Lodge 179, Warrenton will not have a meeting in the month of August. The lodge will resume its meeting again in September. The meetings will start at 7:00 p.m., with entertainment and then business meeting at 7:30 p.m.

The lodge will have fish for the next meeting and the members are to bring side dishes for the same.

180, Burleson Gains New Members Lodge

Our SPJST meeting was held on June 2, 1992. The meeting opened with George Rippin leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and all remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed members and friends.

Roll call showed most officers present.

Secretary Barbara Hartgraves read the minutes of the last meeting and the minutes were approved as read.

Two new members were voted on and they are laebra Huse and John Hilcher.

After the business meeting all the members enjoyed a delicious dinner and fellowship.

The door prizes were won by Ann Schneider and Joyce Russell.

It was my pleasure to attend the 26th SPJST Convention in Victoria. It was well organized and well attended. The entertainment and meals were enjoyed by all. I made a trip to Czechoslovakia in 1990 with a group of Texans and I had the pleasure of meeting some of the fellow travelers at the convention.

Brother Sefcik did not seek reelection for the editor's position. Thank you, Brother Sefcik for a good job you and your lovely wife, Maxine, have done. Both of you will be missed. Our new Editor Irian Vanicek of Lodge 24 will take over in September.

Congratulations to Rachel Thomas and Kevin Hicks on their marriage.

Rachel is the granddaughter of Joe and Estelle Hurtik.

Get well wishes go out to all the sick folks, especially Frances Simmank as she has been under the weather for some time.

On June 3, 1992 the regular business meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance by President Bob Miracle.

Under new business, the lodge discussed plans to have a special at the old fire station in Eddy. The meat will be provided by our lodge and members would bring a covered dish.

It was also decided for each member to invite their families and prospective members. This would give them an opportunity to meet all the members and to decide whether they would like to join us.

The meeting was closed with a discussion or the State Convention.

Delegate Bob Miracle wanted the lodge to discuss how we felt about the issues which would come up at the convention. Also Bob Miracle was introduced as our lodge insurance representative.

At this time Lodge 200 has approximately 54 members.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 4TH DEGREE -- U.S. FLAG On July 1, 1992 Lodge 200 held its regular business meeting and social.

The meeting was opened by President Bob Miracle with the Pledge of Allegiance. Bob had a short report about the State Convention. Bob said, "Insurance is what keeps us going." He also reported there was some discontent but very little. He said he had 43 votes to cast for the lodge and he cast them to the best of his ability. Bob also set a goal for the lodge for us to have 200 members by 1996 which is SPJST's 100th year celebration.

Gene McBride then had a short presentation on insurance and the history of SPJST, "FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS." He said that SPJST was a family-oriented organization with youth programs, loans, and an insurance program second to none. Interest and Annuities stands at 7.1% and Universal Life at 8%. A discussion on Universal Life followed and then drawings for door prizes were held.

The social was enjoyed by all who attended. It was agreed that we try to do a social once a quarter.

Our next meeting will be held on August 5, 1992, Eddy City Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: I missed our July meeting, but while in St. Louis I thought about all of you while you were dining at Luby's Cafeteria. Twenty-six members were present and all of them enjoyed it. The group met back at the church parish hall for a short meeting, making plans for hosting with the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 to have the Dallas Circle.

Games were played and Happy Birthday" was sung to Rose Steinman, Billye Star, Carolyn Cleveland, Jeanie Mason and Albert Boenisch. Best wishes for many more!

Hostesses for August 5 meeting will be Merel Kovar, Maria Prill and Mary Pavey.

I got back in time to join the 3 circles, they were held at the National Hall. Joyce Tesar had the hall decorated beautifully.

The bus arrived with 50 members, with smiling faces. A delicious lunch prepared by Martha Janca was enjoyed by all. Fort Worth members brought the desserts and calories. The members also brought a gift that each of the Dallas Circle members received.

Games were played and a lot of fellowship was held. It was a wonderful day.

Roy and Lydia Alholm will be attending the Navy Women's National Convention in Norfolk, Virginia July 29 through August 1, 1992. After the convention she is taking the past convention tour of Historic Virginia and Washington, D.C., August 2 through August 9.

It was in August of 1946 in Washington, D.C. that she and Roy were married, and this will be their 46th wedding anniversary. Congratulations.

Frank Prochaska won two trips, so he and Josephine spent a week in New Orleans; came home Tuesday and on

Circle Of Lodge 92

Ladies

In place of our unusal July 14th meeting, the Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 along with the Friendship Club of Fort Worth, hosted a party for the Dallas Czech Ladies Circle.

Forty-eight ladies and gentlemen made the bus trip and a good time was had by all according to comments I heard.

The hall was decorated beautifully with a red, white and blue theme.

Thanks to our talented Joyce Tesar who deserved all the compliments given, so does our President Clara Cohen who carried out the same theme with name tags and decorative hats for the workers.

At the head table were the three Presidents Clara Cohen, Jo Prochaska and our guest, Bertha Malik, who took turns introducing their officers and led us in singing "HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN." Preceding the introduction, a moment of silence was observed for all former members who have passed away.

A monetary gift was presented to the Dallas president to be used as needed.

Before lunch our caterer, Martha Janca and her helper, Helen were introduced, followed by a lovely rendition of The Lord's Prayer" sung by Mary Cecile Krivanek.

The food was delicious and more than enough desserts were provided by the host organizations.

After lunch gifts were presented to each Dallas lady. Game time was enjoyed until time for our guests to leave around 2:30 p.m.

All in all, it was a fun time for everyone. You all come back!

See you next month and remember this. The apple in the Garden of Eden did not cause all the problems--it was the pear (pair) on the ground!

Dear Readers, It is that time again for the Teens of Lodge No. 84 to inform you of their annual fund-raisers. The Teens are busy preparing for a big dinner and social fun night, July 29th at 6:00 p.m.

Come hungry and stay late, for the fun of playing social games. The Teens will be selling their dance and project tickets, so load your pockets down and come out for good friends, food and fun!!!!

The 36th Annual Teen Princess Ball will be held on August 1, 1992 from 8:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m., music by the "Music Makers." The crowning will take place at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Buy your dance tickets in advance from one of our Teens. Tickets are $4.50 or at the door $5.00 per person.

Project tickets are $1.00 each or six for $5.00. This is the only fund-raiser the Teen Club has, so please come out and support the Youth Club.

On Sunday, June 28, 1992 Lodge Houston No. 88 hosted the Annual District V Youth Achievement Day. We had a very productive day.

After registration at 10:00 a.m., we had a delicious spaghetti dinner made

by Brother Mike Trefell.

Talent competition began at approximately 1:00 p.m. We were entertained by many talented youth.

After talent competition ended we proceeded into royalty contest. This year we had three queen contestants and one king; namely, Jeanette Dames, Kristy Sokol and Lindsey Michalak (queen contestants), and Paul Pflughaupt was the king contestant.

Each of the contestants presented excellent speeches.

While the results were being calculated, the top point winners were given their awards. Jason Hermis was Top Teen point winner and John Buri was Top Junior winner.

The LITs received their shirts and pins. After the LITs received their pins, the winners for craft and talent were announced.

After the awards were given out for craft and talent competition, the winners for royalty were announced.

Jeanette Dames won second runnerup and Kristy Sokol won first runnerup. Lindsey Michalak won District V Queen and Paul Pflughaupt won District V King.

Pictures were taken of all the winners and we enjoyed pizza afterwards.

Everyone who competed is a winner just for trying.

Daeice na fete Dyji jsou branou k Podyji. Jeliko2 feka Dyje teee doprava, doleva, nahoru, dolri s mnoha zakruty, podivejme se nejdfive ve zkratce na tok teto velmi klikate feky, "ktera nevi kam vlastne chce jit---."

Morayska Dyje pramenici u Pavlova jihov9chodne od mesta Tfeke teee nejdfive jihozapadnim smerem kolem mesta Telee do Daeic, odkud teee pak jine k mora yskorakouske hranici, kterou pfekroeuje u Piseeneho. (Mesta Tfek' a Tele -- ji2ne od Jihlavy jsou v oblasti nazvane "Mora yska Sibif."

Pr 9 jsou tam v zime nejkrutejk mrazy na Morave.) V Rakousku se Morayska Dyje (Mahrisch Thaya) steka v meste Raabs s rakouskou Dyji, znamou nemecky jen jmenem Thaya, a teee pak severovYchodne k rakouskemu Brosendorfu, kde severne odtud vteka zpet na tizemi Moravy, pokraeujic severov9chodnim smerem a2 k udolni nadr2i Vranov. Dyje pak teee zpet k jihov9chodu tvolic statni hranici Moravy a Rakouska; za Nov9m Hradkem tato feka teee od statni hranice ke kralovskemu mestu Znojmu, pokraeujic znovu pobli2e mora y -skorauehnickmestu Mikulovu a pak k podlu2anske Bfeclavi. Dyje pak teee opet na jih tvotic znovu hranici s Rakouskem a pak jihozapadne od slovenskeho mesta Kuty se tato velmi klikata feka vleva do feky Moravy. Od soutoku Moravy s Dyji tvoti ted' feka Morava hranici s Rakouskem a2 k Dunaji, do ktereho se vleva u Devina, zapadne od Bratislavy.

Vrat'me se nyni zpet proti proudu Dyje do Daeic, ji2ne od "Morayske Sibife." Daeice je l ptivodne vznikly u brodu pies feku Dyji, se staly v 12. stoleti trhovou osadou, ktera se pozdeji stala mestem piiponiinanem v roce 1378. (V tomto roce zemfel Karel IV, otec vlasti, je l vladl v letech 1346-1378. Karel IV se narodil v roce 1316; zemfel ye stall 62 let.) K nejstarS'im stavbam mesta path pfivodne opevnenY kostel a sthedoveka tvrz, z nil zbyla jen east phikopti s valcovou vëi v severni easti Daeic. U feky se nachazel pitál vybudovan' kfilovniky s eervenou hvezdou, z neho2 se v gak jen dochovalo v dome popisne eislo 23-24 zdivo kaple s lebrovou klenbou. Na dolnim namesti je dvoupatrovY panskY dam zvanY stars' zamek, s klenutymi interiery, postavenY Krajihi v 16.stoleti jak phipomind napis nad portalem: "Albrecht Krajit z Krajku a na Daeicich, Mandalena Krajihova z Vhesovic a na Daeicich 1579."

Koncem 16.stoleti vznikl ye meste tzv. novy zamek, kterY i pies empirovou piestavbu v roce 1816 je molne rekonstruovat jako etyhkfidlovou disposici s arkadami kolem vnithniho nadvoi-i. Renesaneni

phestavba podstatne zmenila raz vnittniho mesta, v neml dominovala vedle zamku radnice s mazhausem, klenutou sini a cibulovitou bani a hada me g eanskYch domfi s klenutYmi mashausy.

Po polarech v letech 1645 a 1721 dostal novY zamek i mesto barokni raz.

Phestavbu zamku provadel Ital Francesco Cameli, usazenY v Daeicich.

(Po 30 lete \rake -- 1618-1648 -- se do Cech a na Moravu Mimi a Italove jen hrnuli.) Ze zamku vznikla velka dvoupatrova budova s cimbufim a s prCiéelim vyzdobenYm psaniekovYmi sgrafity. Renesanci phipominaji arkady s toskanskYmi sloupy, v piizemi severniho kfidla saly a osmiose Barokni phemenu doznala i stralni v jilnim khldle a nektere easti interieru.

Na Strariskern pfedmesti na levem bfehu Dyje byla vybudovana stfizliva dominanta franti g kanskeho kla§tera s kostelem v letech 1660 al 1670. V klakete je dnes umistneno vlastivedne muzeum a galerie. Ve frantigkanskem chrarne upoutava pozornost sloupoya architektura s boenimi v9klenkov9mi kaplemi a hlavni oltaf s monumentalnimi plastikami a obrazem sv. Antonina od Jana Rottmayra. a arokne byl upraven farni kostel sv.

Vavfince z roku 1183. Tento chram byl privodne romansk9, pfestaven9 ve 14. a 15. stoleti. Barokni pfestavba z let 1775-1788 pochazi od mistrial° stavitele Michala Kirchmayera.

Mariansk9 sloup na namesti z roku 1725 se pfipisuje mistnimu sochafi Sebaldu Kolbovi. V roce 1816 dodo k dark pfestavbe zamku. V tu dobu bylo upraveno pfedevkm praeeli a v interieru byl vybudovan zrcadlov9 sal.

Zamecke interiery dodnes prozrazuji vkus a umelecke citeni tehdejkho majitele, posledniho mohueskeho kanclete, kurfirta a fezenskeho arcibiskupa Karla Theodora Dalberga (1744-1817). Dalk upravy zamku v duchu empiru se uskuteenily v letech 1831-1832 monumentalne fegen9m vnittnim schoclikem, schodi§fovou halou i rokokovou dpravou stropü s pou2itim ptiznaen9ch empirov9ch v9zdobn9ch motivri.

Po odtr2eni Daeic s okolim od Moravy zamek nale2i sprave krajskeho sttediska statni pamatkove puce v Ces. Budejovicich a je v nem sousttedena empirova expozice se sbirkou mobiliate, °brazil a plastik ze zapadni Moravy. Daeick9 zamek je pozoruhodnou ukazkou renesaneniho venkovskeho §lechtickeho sidla, prebudovandho pozdeji v duchu pozdniho klasicismu a empiru.

AnglickY zameckY park s jezirkem, rozglienY v roce 1818 na rozlohu 20 hektara, vynika vzacnou kvetenou.

Kaldoroene se tam konaji divadelni predstaveni a kulturni slavnosti.

Daeicke mestske muzeum, umistnene v bYvalern franti gkanskem klEtehe, ma bohate sbirky sthedovekYch minci, keramiky a malby na skle s obrazovou galerii.

Daeice v brane Podyji prosluly prvenstvim ve vYrobe kostkoveho cukru. ZaslouJila se o to pi. Juliana Radova, man2elka heditele tehdejgfho cukrovaru, ktera se poranila na prstu phi sekani homole cukru. Pani Juliana pak neodbytnYm poukazovanim na

nebezpeene sekani cukrpv9ch homoli docilila, 2e jeji mu2, Jakub Krikof Rad, teditel daeickeho cukrovaru, zavedl v roce 1842 s pomoci sy9ch titednikri do v9roby specialni lis, kter9m se vyrabely cukrove kostky.

Pani Radova je§te na podzim stejneho roku dostala bednieku, ktera obsahovala 350 kostek bileho cukru z rafinerie.

Vynalez byl vylep§ovan a na jafe 1843 po ziskani patfieneho patentu byly na prodej prvni kostky pojmenovane eajov9 cukr v baliecich po jedne fibre opatfen9 nalepkou a firmou s obrazkem daeicke rafinerie cukru.

AC cukrovar v Daeicich u2 davno ne existuje tak svetove prvenstvi tohoto mesta ye v9robe kostkoveho cukru pfipomind neobvykl9 pomnieek v pareiku mezi obema daeick9mi namestimi. Podstavec pomnieku je ze July z Ceskomora yske Vysoeiny; na nem balancujici krychle pfedstavujici kostku cukru je z lekene July. Datum 1843 vytesan9 na horni easti podstavce v§em oznamuje vznik prni kostky cukru na svete v Daeicich, v "b9valern" mora y skem meste na Ceskomora yske Vysoeine.

Daeice s okolim byly odtrJeny od Moravy komunistickYmi mocipany, ktefi rozdelili tizemi stare vlasti na t. zv. kraje, tak jak se jim to libilo, bez ohledu na souhlas posti2eneho obyvatelstva.

Vinula k sobe stale vice a vire svoji hraeku a povidala k ni i k mamince pod hlinou. Ptaci preletavali nad nimi a prozpevovali.

Zdalo se ji, jakoby k ni nekdo mluvil. Nepatrnri otaila hlavu a videla, 2e stoji u ni pani. a kdv2 se ji podivala lope do oblia'eje, poznala pani zarneckou. Byla to vdova po lesnim radovi, bohatzi pani, ktera Si zakoupila zameeek u lesa. Znala ji. Tak si v2dycky predstavovala raj a nyni v nem byla. UstraSene se 'rozhli2ela kolem sebe, nadhera ji oslepovala, ticho ji lekalo. Ale vlidna slova pani zarnecke dociala ji odvahy a ne2 se nadala, t2 hyla v proudu vypraveni. Odpo% idala elle a zpOsobne na otazky, pani se nemohla vynadivit jeji uprimnosti. "Pane Prusíku, přece si vezme­ te Pepičku s sebou. Vlastně mu­ sím říci, že si ji vezmu já. Ne­ mám dětí a vy oba budete u mne jako v rodině. Myslím to s vámi dobře. Zalíbila se mi vaše dcerka, která je velmi slušná, citově zalo­ žená a velmi dobře vychovaná.

Mluvila: tak hezky nad hrobem své maminky i k svojí panence měla pěknou řeč, které vyprávěla své starosti a já to vše vyslechla.

Její panenka jí založila štěstí a i vám, pane Prusíku. Zamlouváte se mi i vy. Potřebuji někoho, na koho se mohu spolehnout. Věřím, že jsem se nezklamala .a prosím vás, abyste nezklamal ani vy mne.

Dnes máme čtvrtek, nastoupíte u mne v pondělí. Zde máte zálohu na plat. A každý den až do pon­ dělka si Pepičku pošlete pro jídlo, od pondělka pak se nemusíte o ty­ to potřeby životní vůbec starat. To ponecháte mně a Pepičce.

Do práce již nechoďte! Zařídím vám, abv vás propustili. Musíte si těch několik dní odpočinout."

Tak došli štěstí dělník Prusík a jeho Pepička, kterou si paní zá­ mecká vzala k sobě a měla ji ja­ ko svoji dceru. A Prusík se stal správcem celého velkého majetku zámeckého, který svojí Pílí. svědo­ mitostí a studiem stal se výteč­ ným odborníkem. A Pepička? Do­ stala po smrti paní zámecké celé toto jmění. které tak znamenitě spravoval její otec, aniž věděl. že to dělá Pro svoii dcerku. - Panen­ ka - hadrová panenka - založí­ la štěstí chudým lidem.

Stěstí, Utilitarism tvrdí, že každý člověk jde po svém štěstí, po své slasti a jen po své slasti, pesimism to štěstí hledá také, ale dochází poznání, že štěstí nelze najíti, poněvadž prý ho není.

Také já myslím, že ho není. Totiž: je po štěstí, jakmile ho někdo tak schválně hledá. Ten, kdo hledá štěstí, již ho ztratil. Člověk každý rád je šťasten -- jistě, jakmile však začne štěstí tak úsilovně vyhledávat, již ho nenalézá. Velmi pěkně jest to pověděno v pohádce o hloupém Hon­ zovi. Ti dva chytří, vzdělaní páni bratři, kteří jdou za štěstím, nenalézají ho; ten hloupý Honza nehledal štěstí, ale kde bylo třeba, jak dovedl pracoval, pomáhal, a vida -- byl šťasten a nakonec musil ještě pomoci oběma bratrům nešťastným. V této pohádce o hloupém Honzovi náš lid největší etickou moudrost nám pověděl, totiž: nehledat štěstí! To úmyslné, dokonce rafinované hledání štěstí činí nešťastným. Moderní člověk po veliké revoluci nejen hospodářsky a politicky, nýbrž i filosoficky a umělecky honí se po ztraceném štěstí, po ztraceném ráji -- ale honbou po štěstí ještě nikdo šťastným se nestal.

Youth Letter New Tabor Youth Plan Activities Dear Readers, On July 5, 1992 the youth club of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor held their monthly meeting.

President Mica Petty called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mabrey Petty.

The minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer also gave her report.

We decided to have our swimming party on July 27 at the Caldwell Pool at 6:00 p.m.

Our youth leader discussed YAD with us, and told the youth about the supplies that we will need for camp.

She also told us about a trip to Schlitterbahn on August 10th.

Our next meeting will be on August 1 at 10:00 a.m.

We had our drawing for door prizes and had refreshments.
