Serve with pride! *** Supreme Lodge quarterly meeting (the first after the 26th Convention) was held Monday, July 6, through Wednesday, July 8, at the SPJST Home Office. Your editor attended the meeting during the afternoon of Tuesday, July 7, and our new Editor Brian Vanicek was also present.

Subject of the transition of the Vestnik editing and method of publishing with the problems and changes therein were discussed.

In discussing the publishing of the Vestnik by people who know what is involved, it becomes evident that it is not just a simple matter of setting the type and arranging the material to be printed; if that were the case, it would simply be a case of one person taking over the duties of another . However, there are many other facets in the work of editing and publishing that do and must take place before the finished newspaper is ready for print, publication as well as mailing. Pictures and quality of same, appropriate placement of them, importance of articles, etc. must be considered.

However, very little of the above was considered in the meeting; this was left to be worked out between the two editors and the publisher.

The main topic discussed at the meeting, pertaining to the Vestnik, was the approximate time and method of the transition from one to the other. It was agreed that the best and most appropriate time and way, with the contract awarding date in October in mind, was that our new editor would work in conjunction with your present one through the month of August with the present setup as is and begin his duties as editor about September 1st (the exact date will have to be determined by appropriate and most advantageous issue of Vestnik when this can take place).

All of this will, of necessity, include a change in the mailing of letters and all material to the new address in Temple, which will be given to our correspondents and membership in ample time for them to get use to the new ADDRESS and CORRECT ZIP CODE. You are asked to please pay attention to your forthcoming Vestniks, especially the editorials for the date on which you will be requested to begin sending your mail to this new address and please begin doing so immediately on and thereafter to the new address, because if you send it to the old address here in West it will have to be forwarded and there-

by delayed by probably two days.

Kindly keep this in mind, and when the date is published, begin using the new address.

The one thing for all of us as members and non-members is to give all possible cooperation in our fraternal work so that our Vestnik can continue to be something that binds us together as one large fraternal and friendly family.

Your present editor stated he will be available for any assistance needed at any time when and if needed by the new editor for information, advice or help. Members of the Supreme Lodge Board seemed to be satisfied with the arrangement and we feel that the change in editors will be done very smoothly; frankly speaking, that is the only way a fraternal method can and should work.

Of course, as our new editor becomes more acquainted and involved with his work you will see some changes (for no two people or exactly alike, not even twins); however, we are certain that your official organ "Vestnik" will continue in capable hands.

In sincere honesty, in the last 23 1/2 years, we have spoiled our correspondents somewhat by "leaning over backward" at times and publishing letters and also material that arrived Friday mornings, because if delayed, they would have been outdated and of no value as far as meeting dates, etc. were concerned.

Of course, that procedure will NO longer be possible because our new editor will be located at the Supreme Lodge headquarters in Temple and, at least, until 31 December 1992 will have to travel 72 miles (144-mile round trip) to Hillsboro Fridays, and trying to get late mail in Friday morning would be an impossibility. Please cooporate and mail your material in time for it to arrive by the DEADLINE: THURSDAY MORNING!!!

The above are the plans as they are agreed on for the present, of course, anything can happen (and often does) to change plans and that is something we cannot foresee; if something does change, you will be notified in these columns and necessary information will be furnished to you.

We feel that it will take some time for the matter of pictures, billing lodges and organizations for advertisements, features (such as engagements, 25- and 50-year wedding celebrations, etc.) to be worked in, so kindly be patient and we will process all as soon as possible. We thank you for your cooperation. *** The Risk of gallbladder surgery is reduced. In a few years, a new form of minimal-incision gallbladder removal that is easy on patients has supplanted major surgery. But according to a report issued this month by the New York State Department of Health, too many surgeons are not adequately trained in the technically difficult procedure. In the operation, called laparoscopic cholecystectomy, surgeons make several small incisions, no more than half an inch long, in the abdomen. A tool is inserted in one opening to cut the gallbladder loose; it is removed through a tube inserted in a second opening. The surgeon monitors progress on a televised image transmitted by a fiber-optic pipe inserted into still another incision. Because the cuts are small, most patients go home in a day and are back at work within a week. Before the procedure was introduced, most gallstone sufferers faced a 4-inch scar, five days or more in the hospital and weeks of recuperation.

(Make sure your surgeon has previous experience with this operation.)

District Letter District VII Meeting The District VII spring meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by President Jarolyn Popp. The meeting was hosted by Lodge No. 185, Hill Country in New Braunfels. Brother Roy Haag, president of Lodge No. 185 welcomed everyone and hoped all would enjoy the day.

Colors were presented by the New Braunfels Youth Club.

Sister Viola Cabla, district 2nd vice president, introduced the following guests: Brother Leonard Mikeska and wife; District Director Sister Thelma Hrncir and husband, Eugene Hrncir and daughter, Angela Hrncir; Joni Lange, State Youth Director. Other guests introduced were Claudette and Tim Reese, Brian and Joan Vanicek of Lodge No. 24; Marie Stayton, District V DYC; and Brother Anthony Trilicek of Lodge No. 133, San Antonio.

Sister Maxine Pavliska had all youth leaders to stand up and be recognized.

They were Virginia Rebecek of Lodge No. 79, Elizabeth Bielefeld of Lodge No. 107, Betty Jurica of Lodge No. 117, Frankie Campbell of Lodge No. 133, Theresa Haag of Lodge No. 185. She explained that no food will be allowed at District and State YADs, only dessert. LIT will be held June 5, 6 and 7 at Camp Val Verde; District YAD will be held July 5 in Floresville.

Brother Eugene Hrncir, rest homes director, gave a brief report on the rest home. Rest homes are always open to visitors. Taylor - No. 1 has 72 residents; and Needville No. 2 has 58 residents.

State Field Representative, for Districts VI and VII, Brother Jerome Hlavaty brought greetings from the sales representatives; these are the people who bring in the money. Top three sales representatives are Dorene Sralla (Lodge 107), Jerry Elzner (Lodge 79) and Maxine Pavliska (Lodge 107). We need all members to help to get more insurance written.

Betty Jurica, secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting and were approved as read. All officers were present.

The following lodges represented at the meeting were: Lodge 79, Corpus Christi; Lodge Rozkvet Zapadu 107, Floresville; Lodge 133, San Antonio; Lodge 137, Taft; Lodge 185, Hill Country; and Lodge 31, Yoakum.

Secretary Jurica read the names of the 50- and 96-year members in the district as follows: Lodge 79 - 9; Lodge 93 - 3; Lodge 107 - 3; Lodge 133 - 2; Lodge 147 - 3; Lodge 164 - 4; Lodge 168 - 2; and Lodge 107 - 75-year member, Albina Svoboda.

Deceased members: Lodge 26 - 1; Lodge 79 - 6; Lodge 93 - 1; Lodge 107 - 3; Lodge 117 - 1; Lodge 133 - 4; Lodge 161 - 2; and Lodge 168 - 2.

Sister Thelma Hrncir, District VII director, gave the following report: Nominee Fraternalist District VII of Lodge 133 - San Antonio, was Brother Joe Spacek. This year 75 - $500 SPJST Scholarships were awarded to graduates and undergraduates. Members were advised: put your savings in the Annunity program plan at 7.1%; Universal Life at 8%. Sister Hrncir announced that she will not be seeking re-election for District VII director. All officers of the Supreme Lodge are all very supportive and I will be ending my twelveth year as director of District VII. Correspondence from SL President Howard Leshikar informed that he was unable to attend District VII meeting and that Brother Mikeska will be attending.

District VII Treasurer Ernest Jasek gave the report. (I don't have all of his report.)

Brother Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer of Supreme Lodge, reportd that SPJST is a people organization for people. The workshop, was attended by 185 members. We should go back to the original; people were in need in the early years and meeting the standards of our people.

Convention committee reports --Insurance Committee - 2 meetings; Pauline Bayer By-Law Committee - 4 meetings; Dominic Netek Finance - 2 meetings; Monta Foster Publication - 1 meeting; Betty Jurica Nominating Committee - Chairman Monta Foster, Tillie Koch and Bob Bayer.

Audit Committee - Chairman Dwight Doeppenschmidt, Frances McDonald and Trey Bielefeld. The Audit Committee found the youth club books in order.

The Nominating Committee made the following recommendation:

Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville The board of trustees met recently to discuss the trading of a very small tract of land located in the swamp area behind the SPJST Hall for land around the ball diamond. Everyone agreed to the trade and a survey is being drawn up.

Plans are being made for the joint picnic for the SPJST Lodge No. 1 and Fayette Czech Heritage Society which is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 1992 to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill.

This is one of our fun outdoor activities' meetings. There will be entertainment for everyone including fishing, volleyball, horseshoes or if you just want to sit and relax that is O.K., too.

A note was read from our SPJST Queen Kimberly Holub. She thanked our lodge for all of the support she was given during the May Fete.

The Property Committee announced they are actively seeking someone to be a caretaker/bartender for our lodge.

We also need more people to work on social game nights as floor walkers and behind the bar; anyone interested should see Jimmie Sheppard.

The youth club gave a brief report about their summer activities including Youth Achievement Day. Everyone congratulated Property Committee Lady Lillian Ochs on her marriage to Homer Sakewitz. Special wishes to both of you.

Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club News I'm behind with my reports because we had so many things happening all at one time. When we had our June 10, 1992 Birthday Club meeting, I was also getting ready to go to the convention in Victoria, so I just didn't have time to write.

On June 10, 1992 President Lowrina Lindemann called the meeting to order at 11:15 a.m. with the roll call.

The minutes were read by Secretary Rita Alexander and were approved.

Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut gave the card report and Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report. She included in her report that the pastry booth, which she delegates her whole day to netted a nice sum; that is one project we always look forward to, because it is a boost to our income.

We really appreciate the help we get from Lodge 88 - most of it is made from "scratch." Now don't go to the grocery store and look for an item named scratch to bake with.

Our Project Committee Edna Froehlich and Willie Mae Ermis were complimented for a good job. Of course, the committee had good help too and they surely were thankful for that.

It was decided to have a covered dish luncheon on July 1, with our faithful Bessie Lero taking charge of the kitchen and she also had help; and on second Wednesday, we will have sandwiches. Bessie Lero made a motion, seconded by Delores Condon.

Since the motion passed we don't have to cook these hot days.

The six ladies who volunteered to bake cakes for both July Wednesdays are: Delores Condon, Adela Kite, Willie Mae Stang, Bessie Lero, Mary Kosut, Lillie Spies.

Mary Kosut thanked Martha Baxter for the cards she donated.

Those who were sick are Karl Lindemann, Birdie Pech and Homer Alexander.

A box of plums was won by President Lowrina Lindemann and the Calcutta game was won by Ima Lero and Edna Froehlich.

We adjourned at 12:00 noon after Mary Kosut gave the Blessing for the noon meal.

Corpus Christi Circle Of Women Happenings The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met Thursday, July 2 with twenty-two members in attendance. Thanks to early birds, Jessie and Norma Baker and Pauline Novosad, the tables and chairs were in place and coffee was perking when I arrived an hour before meeting time. It was a pleasant surprise.

We had a short business meeting during which a thank you card from the family of Joe Hayek was read. Our group made a donation to the American Heart Association in his memory. Lilly Hayek, our treasurer, vas not in attendance having gone on a trip to Seattle, Washington to visit her granddaughter. She was in our thoughts and we hope to see her soon.

We talked about a trip taken by fourteen of our members on June 24th.

Jerry and Milly Elzner rented a van and Jerry once more took us on an excursion, this time to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville. Although the weather was extremely hot, the trip was very pleasant in the comfortable, well cooled van. There's nothing like traveling in close quarters to become better acquainted and since we switched seats at rest stops, we each had a chance to talk to different ladies along the way. Some of the animals at the zoo were smarter than we were and were hidden in the shade. But there was still more than enough to see and the trip was well worthwhile.

A gift was presented to Jerry Elzner in appreciation of his thoughtfulness and he was also wished a happy birthday on July 14th. Naturally, that is also the birthday of his twin sister and Krouzek member, Agnes Burge of Kerrville. Happy Birthday, Agnes.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Rose Huff, Mattie Netek and Helen Sacky, who were all at our meeting and best wishes are extended to Betty Sefcik, who was absent.

Reunions Large Attendance At Marak Reunion The Fifth Matthew Marak family reunion was held Saturday, June 27, 1992 in Seymour, Texas at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall with 136 family members attending.

Registration began at 9:30 a.m.

Father Bart of Seymour officiated at the Mass for the living and deceased family members in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:30 a.m.

A barbecue and sausage dinner was served. Helen Marak and Pat Coker, both of Seymour, were in charge of local arrangements.

Raymond Peters of Keller, chairman, conducted the business meeting following the noon meal. Family members of the nine children of Matthew Marak consist of August, Emil, Mollie, Mary, Hattie, Matthew Jr., Roman, John, and Sophia attending were introduced.

Special recognition was given to the two surviving daughters, Mary Marak Macha and Hattie Marak Pavlicek, both of Seymour attending the reunion.

Recognition was also given to Mary Marak Macha of Seymour as being the oldest person attending; Luke Everett Peters, age 4 months as being the youngest; and Claudia Howard of Arlington, Virginia as traveling the farthest.

Family members were treated to a dance followed by an evening meal.

Plans were made to have the 1995 family reunion in Tours, Texas with Gustine Vickery of Waco in charge of the local arrangements.

SPJST Holds Mr/Miss Contest At 26th Convention Approximately 600 visitors and delegates to the XXVI Convention watched while eight representatives from five districts competed in talent and speech for the title of Mr. or Miss SPJST. During a reception held earlier that same day, contestants were able to get acquainted with one another, while personal interviews were being conducted by the judges.

We would like to thank each of these individuals for taking time out of their busy schedule to share with us their many talents. To Michael Morris, Mr. SPJST; and Lori Everett, Miss SPJST, we would like to express our gratitude for providing the delegates and visitors to the XXVI SPJST Convention, with a positive image of the young adults in our Society.

We were delighted that State King, Tommy Rieger; and the State Queen, Bridget Schwartz, consented to serve as MC's for the contest. As always, they did a wonderful job.

XXVI SPJST Convention Mr. SPJST, Michael Morris Michael Morris, Mr. SPJST for the XXVI Convention and the District II representative, is a member of Lodge No. 47, Seaton. Michael is the 21year-old son of Nick Morris of Temple, Texas, and attends Temple Junior College part-time.

When not attending school or working, Michael enjoys performing music professionally, for which he has received numerous musical awards.

Michael's future ambitions are to be a successful musician, broadcaster, or other public figure. He indicates he may even try his hand in politics.

Michael has been a member of SPJST Youth Club for 13 years, where he served as president, vice president, flag bearer and sergeant-at-arms.

Her honors within the SPJST include; District II Queen, 1st Runner-Up to State Queen, and 1st place in Science and Education at State Youth Achievement Day. She was honored to be a candidate for the Miss SPJST Contest, because "representing the SPJST in any way is pride within itself." She states, "I have been given many opportunities through the SPJST. It has positively affected my life. The SPJST is a wonderful organization and I would like to make it my personal goal to influence people about this fraternal Society." ***

XXVI SPJST Convention Miss SPJST, Lori Everett Lori Everett, Miss SPJST for the XXVI Convention and the District I, Miss Representative, is a member of Lodge No. 39, Bryan. Lori is the 20year-old daughter of Omer and Dottie Everett of College Station and attends Texas A&M University, where she hopes to receive a degree in Accounting.

She enjoys playing softball, singing, riding horses, playing piano, shopping and spending time with friends and family. Lori felt it was an honor to be a Miss SPJST Candidate because it gave her the ..."opportunity to share and utilize my talents in a contest offered by a fraternal organization which supports and provides protection to its members to the fullest."

Staci felt it was an honor to be a candidate for the Miss SPJST Contest because it gave her the "opportunity to meet, commune and interact with friends and family of the SPJST fraternal organization."

Damian Abreo - District Mr. SPJST Representative Damian Abreo is the District V Mr. SPJST Representative and a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston, Texas.

Damian is the 19-year-old son of the Mr. and Mrs. Bill Abreo. Presently, Damian is attending Rice University where he hopes to graduate. His future goals are to attend law school and pursue a career in politics.

As a member of SPJST for 11 years and the Youth Club for 3 years, he served as an assistant to the Youth Leader and received various awards at Youth Achievement Days. Damian feels it an honor to be a candidate for Mr. SPJST because "to be considered to represent the goals and values of the SPJST is an honor for me and to anyone else who would be considered." *

Bryan is the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Becan of Dallas, Texas. He attended the Arts Magnet High School where he was a valued member of the Theater Department. Bryan's future plans are to make himself known in the communications or broadcasting industry.

As a member of SPJST for 18 years and the SPJST Youth Club for 12 years, he was able to serve as Youth Club president, as a Leader-in-Training (LIT), and assist in archery at camp. His honors within SPJST include: SPJST State King, Beseda, and various awards at the Youth Achievement Days. As a member of SPJST for 4 1/2 years, and the Youth Club for 4 years, she has served in the capacity of Youth Club vice president, sergeant-at-arms, secretary and flag bearer. Her honors within the SPJST include: District V queen and various awards at Youth Achievement Days. She plans to remain active in the SPJST and feels honoie-1 to have been a candidate for the Miss SPJST because "it is a great opportunity for me to represent my district and lodge in the best way I can. I feel that being active in the SPJST,4 I hope to keep the spirit of the youth alive and growing strong. Angela is the 20-year-old daughter of Eugene and Thelma Hrncir of Corpus Christi. She is now attending Texas A&M University where she works and hopes to graduate with a major in Journalism and a minor in Marketing. Her future goal is to work for a large advertising firm which specializes in broadcasting.

As a member of SPJST for 20 years and the Youth Club for 8 years, she received several District and State awards. District Youth Counselors District IV camp DistriCt IV Youth Club members will be attending a new camp this year.

They will be camping at Camp Butman which is near Merkel, Texas from July 31 - August 3. We have planned numerous fun activities for the children.

We are looking forward to this new camp for two reasons. One is that it is so much closer for all of us in District IV. Another reason is the cabins are air-conditioned and have hot water!

These are two luxuries that we have not had in the past. But, we promise to have serveral other activities that will resemble "roughing it" so that the children can have a good camping experience. Sandra Jansa District IV DYC ***

From Youth Leader Reznik Earned BS Degree Lisa graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a minor in Psychology.

To further her education, her plans are to attend a nursing school and

receive a BS in nursing.

Lisa is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 84.

She held many offices and headed many committees in the Junior and Teen Clubs.

In 1987 she served the SPJST as a State Queen.

She is a recipient of the SPJST Scholarship and also one of young ladies who made the "Beseda" learning tape.

Letters El Campo-Hillje Youth Discussed Summer Events The July 2, 1992 meeting of Lodge No. 40 Youth Club was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Martha Bartos.

Kim Kacal led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

Sharon Borak read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved as read.

Jody Krpec read the treasurer's report.

We talked about camp and the Family Day. YAD will be July 26; registration, 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Poems were read and door prizes were awarded. After the meeting Lisa Reck served refreshments.

The next meeting is August 6, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commercial State Bank in the Gold Room.

Lodge 88 Youth Club Discuss Camp Houston

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 88 held a monthly meeting on July 1, 1992. Many kids from the other lodges of District V attended because there was a parents'

meeting before to discuss camp.

We will be leaving Lodge 88 at 9 a.m. July 13 to travel to Camp Val Verde to have a fun-filled week with District VII. We also greeted our two new members, Holly Hubbard, age 12 and Russell Miller, age 16 - with open arms.

The July birthdays celebrated were Nicholas Havemann (July 31) and Amanda Hermis (July 2).

Mrs. Linney awarded the entire youth club with candy for the hardwork and success they have accomplished. Keep it up guys and gals!

The July 1st meeting of Lodge No. 187 was called to order at . 7 p.m. by Carey Holman. Allyson Holman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The register was read and there were 14 members, 2 guests and 7 adults present.

We received correspondence from the families of Arnold Leschber and Kermit A. Johnson.

The treasurer then gave us her report.

Our new officers are: President -- Carey Holman Vice President -- Lauren Johnson Secretary -- Ursula Young Reporter -- Stephanie Leschber Unfinished business was camp, YAD and new point sheets. This year each youth member is asked to keep up with the points.

The president then adjourned the meeting at 7:45 p.m.

Brother Kokes was born September 28, 1916 in Taylor, the son of Frank and Antonia (Dustor) Kokes. A lifelong resident of Taylor, he was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church, Beyersville Lodge No. 48, and had been a farmer for 43 years.

Sister Niemann, age 66, of Holland was born in Hillsboro to Jess Bassey and Brittie Jackson. She had lived in Holland for 22 years and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bartlett, with the Rev. Art Bilesse officiating. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Bartlett.

Sister Niemann was preceded in death by three brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Edgar Niemann of Holland.

Rosary was recited on Sunday in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mass was at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29 in St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall, officiated by the Rev. James Plagens. Burial was in the St. Ambrose Catholic Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Kocich was born October 28, 1901 in Moravia, Texas to Joseph and Sophie (Loika) Schwartz. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, St. Helen's Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Court of St. Catherine of Sienna.

Martha married Ed Kocich on November 21, 1921 in Moravia, Texas.

They moved to the Fairview community in 1927. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Kocich and a daughter, Magdalene Kocich Moeller.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Weldon and Francis Kocich of San Angelo; son-in-law, Norbert Moeller of Rowena; eight grandchildren, Jocille Roberts of Whitesboro, Dolores Mask of Richland Springs, Marcus Kocich of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, John Kocich of Wall, Susanna Richards of San Antonio, Galen Moeller of San Angelo, David Moeller of Miles and Charles Moeller of Rowena; 13 great-grandchildren; and one step-grandchild; two brothers, Alphonse Schwartz and John Schwartz, both of Moravia; and five sistes, Otillie Bucek of Schulenburg, Annie Berger, Hilda Mikulik and Willie Mae Braden, all of Wall, and Louise Hrncir of Canada.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Marcus Kocich, John Kocich, Galen Moeller, David Moeller, Charles Moeller and nephew, Harvey James Mikulik.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, with the Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Robert Love officiating.

Burial was in San Antonio Prairie Cemetery near Deanville. Visiting hours were from 7:30 a.m. until service time the day of the funeral at the funeral chapel.

Sister McMurtrey was born in the San Antonio Prairie community in Burleson County on September 12, 1928. She graduated from Caldwell High School in 1946.

She married Melvin H. Brinkmann in 1951. Mrs. McMurtrey worked at Texas Instruments in Dallas for 33 years and had recently retired. She married Jack McMurtrey on March 14, 1966.

Mrs. McMurtrey was a member of Reinhardt Bible Church, the Czech Club of Dallas, and SPJST Lodge No. 186. Family members said she enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, also playing the piano.

Mrs. McMurtrey was preceded in death by her husband, Jack McMurtrey; her father, John L. Kristof; and a brother, Alvin Kristof.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Kristof of Caldwell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lanell and Tony Luksa and Patricia Ann and H.L. Mrs. Klinkovsky was born in Seaton to F.J. A. Marek and had lived in Bell County all her life. She married John J. Klinkovsky on October 11, 1939, and was a homemaker.

Sister Klinkovsky was a member of Seaton Brethren Church, Seaton Christian Sisters, SPJST Lodge No. 24, and the WFLA (Z.C.B.J.) Lodge No. 416.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.

Survivors are her husband, John J. Klinkovsky of Seaton; two sons, Albert Klinkovsky of Austin and John Lee Klinkovsky of Temple; two daughters, Joyce Klinkovsky and Mrs. Johnnie J. (Martha) Kopriva of Temple; two sisters, Ella Machalek of Round Rock and Viasta Marek of Burlington; a brother, Willie Marek of Temple; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

SPJST Member From Mart Celebrates Age 96!

In 1896 Alfred Nobel passed away and the Nobel prize was established.

During this year the X-ray was discovered - a definite advancement for the betterment of mankind. It was also this year that Hermina (Minnie) Pavelka Kubitza was born.

On May 7, 1896 her parents, Joseph and Marie (Holecek) Pavelka, from Czechoslovakia, celebrated their new daugher's birth. Her parents had immigrated to Galveston in March 1890 and later moved to West, Texas where Hermina was born.

Hermina came from a large family of 8 brothers and one sister, all of whom are now deceased. She married husband Adolph Kubitza, and was blessed with 3 sons and one daughter which are; daughter, Mrs. John (Rosilee) Bartosh of Abbott, Texas; a son, Fred and wife Elizabeth Mach Kubitza of Mart, Texas; a son, Robert A. Kubitza of Axtell, Texas; and one son, deceased, Frank Kubitza, 1915 - 1917.

She and her husband Adolph farmed near Axtell, Texas, where they raised their childrn. Adolph passed away September 10, 1975 leaving a legacy of 17 grandchildren, 25 greatgrandchildren and one step-greatgrandchild.

Hermina has always taken part in SPJST Lodge No. 35 in Elk activities and homemaking. She liked to sew when she was younger and also enjoys getting outdoors and visiting with company.

Handy Harrison Becoming Big Hit (Girls Tennis)

Tina Harrison may stand just 4 feet and 10 inches and weigh only 85 pounds, but she's becoming a large presence among area girls tennis players.

Valley National Qualifier at Dwight Davis Tennis Center last week. She will play in another national qualifier this weekend in Springfield, Missouri.

"I am thrilled, delighted and ecstatic," said Doug Smith, Harrison's coach. "She is starting to turn the corner. She hasn't turned it yet, but she has made incredible strides since February."

Harrison, who will be an eighth grader next year at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in Oakville, was a fine basketball and soccer player but has decided to concentrate on tennis, "Tina is quite an athlete," Smith said.

"She is incredibly quick and she already possesses an all-court game which is unusual for a girl of her age and size."

Harrison often appears to be physically overmatched when she steps on the court.

"A lot of girls who are 14 can be almost full grown," Smith said. "Look at Jennifer Capriati. But Tina likes to play at the net. The reason she can do so is because of her athletic ability.

She has the aptitudes a lot of girls lack which involves racquet skills and touch shots."

Harrison had an easy time in her first match of the tournament last week as she defeated Erin Waters of Nebraska, 6-0, 6-0. That was as far as Harrison, who was one of four Missouri girls in the draw of 24, expected to go.

"I wasn't supposed to win anything other than my first match," Harrison said.

Harrison had to beat two girls she had lost to in previous matches to reach the semifinals Friday.

She mounted an exciting comeback to beat Christine Anthony of Oklahoma in the second round, 4-6, 7-6, 63.

"I tried to play aggressively and hit to her backhand," Harrison said. "I just made too many errors in the first set. I fell behind 3-0 in the second set but then the shots in which I was missing started to go in."

Harrison won the next four games, but was within a game of a loss after she fell behind 5-6 in the second set.

She won the next game to force the tie-breaker and won that, 7-3.

She beat Angela Stroup of Oklahoma, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before losing both her matches Friday.

The win over Stroup was especially nice because it avenged a straight-set loss in a Missouri Valley Winter Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.

That tournament may have been the low point for Harrison as she lost all six of her matches while she played with an injured shoulder.

She has come on since that point though to win an Endorser Tournament and finish third in the Little Sprout at Dwight Davis and the Easter Bowl in Little Rock.

"I think the Easter Bowl may have been the turning point for her," Smith said. "She beat several good players in that tournament."

The wins against the quality competition have helped Harrison's confidence.

"She is finally starting to get that winning mentality," Smith said. "She has always loved to practice and loves clinics and drills, but I don't think she has loved the heat of battle. As gifted as she is I don't think she has yet to begin to recognize her own capabilities. I think this tournament will help her out a lot."

The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor held its annual Spring Festival Easter week.

Mr. Woody Richards welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming, .then emceed the program.

Rev. Atkins Noble gave a short devotion ovi Easter and sang an Easter hymn.

As in years past, the great-grandchildren of the residents and the students from the Seventh Street Day Care Center modeled their new Easter outfits to the delight-ofthe'residents.

Then Catherine Holubec and Leona Stalmach sang some Easter duets.

Mr. Howard Nelson entertained the guests with his accordian playing during refreshments.

The refreshments were served by volunteers Elsie Flink, Eunice Stall, Agnes Prikryl, Demetria Shiller, Alma Zimmerhanzel, Gertrude Pulkrabek, Lois Gainer, Margie Holman and Shirley Holubec.

Features American Sokol Berwyn, Illinois The American Sokol Organization is sponsoring a benefit honoring SENATOR JUDY BARR TOPINKA of the ILLINOIS 22ND DISTRICT on Friday, October 23, 1992 at The Lexington House, 7717 W. 95th Street, Hickory Hills.

All proceeds will benefit the American Sokol Programs that includes developmental gymnastics for small children, artistic gymnastics for boys and girls ages six through 17 and adults, rhythmic gymnastics, physical exercise programs for senior citizens, cultural programs highlighting our Czechoslovak heritage, volleyball, gymnastic festivals on a national level, and the American Sokol Library and Archives.

When Senator Topinka was asked to be our first honoree, she readily accepted, knowing our dedication to family values, physical fitness and mental alertness. Since 1984 she has represented the values of the people in the 22nd District with energy, intelligence, fiscal responsibility and just plain hard work. Her knowledge of health care issues has made her nationally respected in the field.

Entertainment will be provided by a representative group of gymnasts and dancers from local Sokol units. Dinner music and after dinner dancing will feature Franz Benteler and The Royal Strings. Franz Benteler is a celebrated master violinist, who entertains dignitaries and people from all walks of life around the world. He has assembled a select group of musicians for this special evening.

Autor zná důvěrně prostředí, v němž žijí naši krajané za mořem, pracoval několik let na zastupitelském úřadě ČSSR ve Washingtonu a využíval každé příležitosti k setkání s Čechy a Slováky žijícími na mnoha místech USA. Autor ukládá své poznatky do připravova­ né knihy, která přiblíží veřejnosti život našich krajanů za mořem.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Řád číslo 133 San Antonio Milé sestry a bratři: Naše schůze, která se konala 17 květ­ na byla dobře navštívená.

Před obědem, který byl podáván ve 12 hodin v poledne Mišel Poppová přednesla in­ vokaci. Všichni přítomní si pochutnali na hovězí roštěné kterou řád obstaral a různé zeleniny příkrmy a zákusky, které přinesly naše členky.

jprve jsme vzdali čest naší vlajce a pak jsme uctili památku našich zesnulých členů jednou minutou ticha.

President Trilicek děkoval všem členům, kteří pracovali na přípravách našeho 75 letého výročí řádu 133 San. Antonio. Zvláštní poděkování patřilo bratru E. Matulovi za vydání slavnostní Brožury; 245 členů a hostů se radovalo na té slavnosti, hodně dobrého jídla, tancování a zpívání českých písniček.

Bratr Don Netek oznámil, že jeho zeť Paul Heath udělal "Video" o těch oslavách a budou to ukazovat na naší červencové schůzi.

Na listě nemocných byla sestra Anežka Poppová, ale už se cítila dobře a byla přítomná na schůzi a děkovala všem členům za pohlednici s přáním brzkého uzdravení.

Sestra Viola Kurtz oznámila že Julia Kurtz se zotavuje po nemoci a bratr Joe Špaček oznámil, že sestra Ann Špaček byla zase v nemocnici a sestru Mildred Stroble ranila mrtvice, ale už je jí dobře a zotavuje se u její dcery.

Všechny 3 sestry dostaly od řádu pohlednice z blahopřáním k jejich uz­ dravení.

Soustrast byla projevena bratru Joe Holubovi o umrtí jeho manželky Adela Holub.

Výbor pro nové členy byl ustanoven sestra Alma Trilicková, Gertrude Pavliska a Viola Kurtz, 5 členů bylo schváleno a přijato do řádu, jsou to Ricardo Uribe, Robert Buffington, Phylis Buffington, Emilie Newman a Carol Dee Kutil. Carol Kutil dostala průkaz jejího životního pojištsění, Narozeniny v květnu měla sestra Lucille Dlugosh.

Výročí svatby v květnu nikdo z našich členů neměl.

"Split the Pot" vyhráli Ricardo Uribe a Joe Špaček. Dveřní cenu vyhráli 1. Ernest Popp, 2. Bill Pavliska 3. James Kostelník.

Bratři Anthony Trilicek a Emil Matula se zůčastnili SP JST Státni Konference ve Victoria 14-17 června.

Zajisté nám přinesou zprávy o tom na naší červencové schůzi.

Neměli jsme schůzi třetí neděli v červnu protože to byl "Svátek Otců."

Naše příští schůze bude 19. července ve 2 hodiny odpoledne. Budeme mít obkládané chlebíčky (sandwiches) na svačinu a prosíme aby sestry přinesly nějaké zákusky a nebo "chips".

ČEŠI V NEBRASCE - Ročník XXVII 1982 Jednou odpoledne zazvonil v mé kanceláři telefon a muž. jehož jmé­ no jsem přesně nerozuměl, řekl, že volá z města Columbus v Nebrasce.

Má zde v rozhlasovém vysílání pra­ videlný program polkové hudby, každý rok pořádá polkový festival, vydává gramofonové desky. Měl by zájem o nějakou dobrou polkovcu kapelu z Československa, rád by uspořádal její zájezd pro krajany v Nebrasce, Texasu a dalších stá­ tech. Nemá nějaký takový orchestr nyní namířeno do Spojených států?

Samozřejmě že mě hned napadla Moravanka: několikrát jsem psal o jejích vystoupeních v televizi, a než jsme odjížděli do Spojených státu, byli jsme v Lucerně na jejím koncertu, jehož atmosféra a nadšení publika nad našimi slováckými pís­ ničkami mi dlouho zůstaly v pamětí.

Už tehdy jsem si řekl. že tahle tem­ peramentní muzika se musí líbit všude, a jestli to bude možné, měla by se Moravanka představit i ame­ rickému obecenstvu, zejména našim krajanům.

Vysvětlil jsem panu Siedlikovi, jak mi později nahláskoval své jmé­ no, že u nás zařizuje podobné věci Pragokoncert, který budu informo­ vat o jeho zájmu. Upozornil jsem ho, že pokud vím, žádná kapela v do­ hledné době nemá zájezd do Spoje­ ných státu v plánu a že by tedy mu­ sel organizovat všechno sám, platit dopravu, zaopatření souboru i jeho honoráře. Týž den jsem poslal panu Siedlikovi desku Moravanky a do Prahy dálnopis Pragokoncertu a pustil ísem to z hlavv.

Nikoliv pan Joe Siedlik. Jakmile dostal desku, ozval se znovu a že by měl vážný zájem. Volal ještě něko­ likrát, a protože Pragokoncert jed­ nal dost operativně, začínalo turné Moravanky dostávat zcela konkrétní obrysy. Samozřejmě, byla to sázka do loterie, spolupráce s neznámým lokálním manažerem. Když však Big Ioa, jak zněla obchodní značka Siedlikovy firmy, poslal Moravance letenky a složil na našem obchodním zastupitelství v New Yorku zálohu na honoráře za první týden jejíh') vystoupení, bylo jasné, že všechno je na dobré cestě.

Potom se Velký Joe ozval naposle­ dy a jeho hlas byl plný nepotlačiteiného triumfu: orchestr budou na le­ tišti v Omaze vítat tři kapely, patnáct poslanců parlamentu státu Nebraska a guvernérova žena a ze šňůry kon­ certu Moravanky jsou dva už úplně vyprodány a celkově dosáhl před­ prodej 35 procent,. což je velice, ve­ lice slušné... Joe si je jist, že zájezd bude velikou událostí pro všechny krajany i polkové kapely, kterých je v Nebrasce přes sto osmdesát.

Velvyslanec souhlasil, že u podob­ né slávy by neměl chybět ani před­ stavitel čs. velvyslanectví. Pracovní cesta ke krajanům v Nebrasce a v Jižní Dakotě a na tamější univer­ zity byla ostatně již delší dobu v plá­ nu. A tak '[sem si objednal ·letenku.

Nevím, zda mezi těmi třemi stov­ kami lidí, ~teří přišli Moravanku při­ vítat, bylo i patnáct poslanců nebras­ kého parlamentu, dost o tom pochybuji, ale kapela hrála, Ilaše reportérů blýskaly a v čele vítacího výboru se usmíval chlapík s bílými vlasy a vysoký bezmála dva metry: to může být jen Veliký Joe Siedlik.

Kytice, pár vět na přivítanou a po ubytování v motelu· pokračovalo se­ tkání v nové hale Sokola v Jižní Oma­ ze. A tam jsem se skutečně seznámil a dokonce si zatančil s manželkou guvernéra Nebrasky Pat Exonovou, která byla z české rodiny a hovořila pořád ještě velmi slušnou češtinou.

Svou účastí na podobných krajan­ ských akcích paní Exonová zřejmě pomáhá udržovat manželovy pozice mezi českými voliči.

Velký Joe, při jiných příležitostech vystupuje i jako Polka Joe. mi pak vysvětlil, jak organizoval uvítání Moravanky na letišti. Každému, kdo tam přijde, slíbil vstupenku na ta­ neční večer v sokolovně s párkem a pivem zdarma. A hned se pochlubil, že má úzký obchodní kontakt s vý­ robcem hot dogs, párků v housce, kterému prodal právo používat pro své výrobky značku Big Joe. Za to Joe dostává z každého prodaného párku nějaký cent. což při metrácích párků prodaných při tanečních ve­ čírcích a polkových festivalech, kte­ ré Joe organizuje. není tak zcela za­ nedbatelná sumička.

Joe Siedlik je vlastně polského pů­ vodu, ale protože Čechů je v Nebras­ ce ještě o něco víc než Poláku, udr­ žuje s českvmí krajanskými spolky těsnou spolupráci. Češi i Poláci mají rádi polku. O tom, jakého původu tento tanec vlastně je, se mezi Ame­ ričany českého a polského původu neustále vedou pře.

Pan Siedlik mi později vyprávěl, že založil svou manažerskou činnost právě na polce. Vždy v září pořádá festival Dny polky, kterého se v jed­ nom ročníku zúčastnilo i šedesát or­ chestrů. Joe si však uvědomuje, že nelze věčně žít ze stále stejných zdrojů a stereotypu. Zejména mládež - a on si potřebuje vychovat mladé obecenstvo - žádá nové podněty a atrakce. Věřil, že takovým impulsem může být turné Moravanky. Když skončil první koncert Moravanky, zářil Joe jako vánoční stromeček, by­ lo vidět, že jeho očekávání se splnila.

Těžký kámen obav, že na celém zá­ jezdu muže také pořádně prodělat, mu spadl ze srdce.

Moravanka zvítězila hned napo­ prvé: líbily se svižné a vtipné slo­ vácké písničky, chytla vitalita jejího projevu. Stál jsem při koncertu mezi kapelníky nejrůznějších polkových i country music orchestru, kterých se na první v,'stoupení Slabákovy ka­ pely sjelo kolem patnácti, a sledoval jsem, jak jejich počáteční rezervo­ vanost roztávala. a když Moravanka perfektně předvedla i dixielandovou skladbu a směs melodií Glena Mille­ ra, bylo z poznámek · a uznalého· pe-

kyvování znát. že oceňují profesio­ nální kvality našich muzikantů.

V druhé polovině večera hrál pak orchestr k tanci. kolem půlnoci však už všichni krajané stáli v půlkruhu u pódia. jako by chtěli být co nej­ blíže muzikantům, z nichž přímo vy­ zařovala radost ze hry a spontánní elán.

Zúčastnil jsem se ještě dvou kon­ certů Moravanky. A také někteří krajané za ní jeli znovu, podruhé po­ třetí, a třeba i stovku mil.

Když se probíráš zažloutlými stránkami Dějin Čechů v Nebrasce, které vydala v roce 1928 Růžena Ro­ sická, najednou jako by ze vzpomí­ nek a vyprávění českých průkopníků v Nebrasce zavanul dech prérie: v létě se nad pláněmi rezaté trávy tetelí horký vzduch, v zimě fičí prud­ ký vichr. S těmito pustými prostora­ mi se naši krajané pustili do křížku.

Nikde šťavnatá luka s říčkami, strá­ ně plné stromů, jak na ně byli zvyklí z domova, jen panenská půda čekala na jejich rádla a pot, aby v budoucnu mohla vydat úrodu. Kobylky, které se v některých letech objevily v ob­ rovských hejnech, hadi. z nichž ně­ kteří byli člověku velmi nebezpeční, prérijní požáry, které při závanech větru jsou rychiejší než jezdec na koni, a ovšem i setkání s Indiány, kteří se na bílé osadníky netvářili příliš přátelsky, protože jim zabírali nové a nové oblasti jejich lovišť, to všechno se objevuje v těchto vzpo­ mínkách.
