---Charles Eliot The XXVI SPJST Convention is now history. In the coming weeks in meetings and gatherings plus in the forthcoming issues of Vestnik you will be hearing about what happened, results and decisions reached at the convention, however, probably the most accurate facts of what happened will appear in the final printing of the By-laws and Proceedings when they are finished and printed. The one thing you can be certain of is that the delegates, supported our local lodge system and the memberships' overall control of SPJST Society. The results were mostly attained by a show of hands in most cases and in some cases could be considered somewhat close.

The first day was somewhat of a disappointment to your editor compared to previous conventions he had attended because we had approximately 300 delegates and in most cases only about 30 hands would be seen voting pro or con and about 10 voting the opposite which is not representative of a total of 300, however, mid-morning, Tuesday more delegates seemed to grasp the meaning of the discussions before them and more began taking part in the discussions and the voting.

A number of them told yours truly before the Tuesday morning session convened, that they had not completely understood what they were voting on in the Monday's session and were advised that the 4 microphones on the floor were there for their use and that they should use them to get clarification of the subject simply by requesting it and that voting for or against something they did not understand was of no value.

At any rate, as already stated, the convention is over and our Society will live by the decisions made while the convention was in session. Probably some members may not agree with the decisions made, but the majority has spoken.

After serving 24 years as your editor, his decision was made not to seek reelection to that position again for several reasons. First, a person's word should be worth something and, at the 25th Convention in 1988, your editor made the statement that "this is the last time I will accept the position;" second, your editor's eye surgery had not turned out as well as expected and the feeling was that the well-being of the Society would be better served by not accepting; third, we are always stating that we need to get our younger members involved in our Society's future and how can they if we just keep "hanging on" until we cannot serve any longer (a young member, Brother

Brian Vanicek, was elected and we are certain he will do well as your editor).

Spending more time with family, relatives, friends, etc. also mean a lot to this editor.

Naturally, our most sincere thanks to all the faithful members and friends with whom we had worked all these years and our utmost appreciation for their understanding in all instances with the publishing of their letters. We feel you will continue doing so in the future.

A group of delegates contacted yours truly and stated "we will nominate you, regardless how you feel, and vote you in by a great majority which will be a mandate from the membership for you to continue being our editor." This writer explained to them that a "mandate" would have to be 90 to 100 percent of the votes and that a "mandate" is not always the smartest thing to carry around, and that a mandate may help a person's ego but may not help the Society. As an example, in the last 12 years in one election our national leader claimed that he had a "mandate" from the people to run the country his way and look where we are now, especially our national deficit. In conclusion your editor's decision prevailed.

Maybe all of us should take a lesson from all the workers in District VI who worked so diligently before and during the convention without any thought of "I wonder how much I will be paid for all this work I'm doing." Brother Matt Vanek told this editor that all of those folks who worked so hard during this time did it all free of charge and they certainly made the convention enjoyable and pleasant for all of us; there certainly was no reason for any of us not to enjoy our stay in Victoria. The get-acquainted party Sunday night with entertainment, the Monday night open-air gathering, topped by the Tuesday night congenial social banquent with Placedo Lodge 97 Member the Honorable State Comptroller John Sharp (principle speaker) who delivered a very informative and inspiring speech to the assembly (introduced by Rockdale Lodge 174 Brother the Honorable State Representative Dan Kubiak) certainly made the 3 evenings of the convention jovial social gatherings leaving the business of the convention for the next day in each case. Of course, there was quite a bit of politicking could be seen in little huddles after each night following the official programs.

On the subject of the convention, this writer wishes to make the following observations and comments. It may have seemed, to many delegates, that this writer was trying to take too much of an active part in the convention.

Well!!!, "DEAR" delegates, the purpose of a convention is to communicate ideas, to agree or to disagree on a subject and to resolve these differences to a viable and workable solution that will help our society continue operations into the 21st century. This writer came to the convention to work and not to just sit there like a big fat frog on a lily pad grabbing a fly every now and then. Lodge 47, Seaton Dear Members: The June 12 meeting began at 7:00 p.m. with President Tim Reese calling for the presentation of flags by Flag Bearers Mark Greger and Shannon Pechal. After reciting the pledge, the membership remained standing in a moment of silent prayer for the departed member, friend and former Lodge 47 President Alfred Klusacek.

Visitors welcomed were Ann Balusek and Freddie Schroeder.

One hundred percent good health was wished for Louis Sirny, Leon Jezek, Frank Mikeska, Joe Mihatsch, Calvin Schiller and Tony Vybiral.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call and minutes of the previous meeting which were approved with minor corrections.

Announced and welcomed as transfers were Lester Pomykal and Mary Lesper.

Board minutes were read by Secretary of the Board Judy Pechal.

Officers' reports followed.

President Reese spoke on the May Fete and the June picnic. He stated he was extremely impressed with the number of wonderful volunteers for the picnic. President Reese also said that because of the closeness and support of members before, during and after the picnic was well worth the effort.

An appreciation dinner for workers will be held July 8 at 7:00 p.m. Meat will be furnished, but please bring something good to eat to share with everyone.

FAC Ruth Hanusch reported a Tarok Tournament at Lodge 17, New Tabor on July 18, and a "relaxed" social night will be July 19th.

Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave her monthly report and added that a detailed report of the picnic will be given during the July meeting.

Assistant Youth Leader Ginger Greger reported 23 members and no guests present. A pre-camp meeting will be July 23 in Granger at 7:00 p.m.

She reminded the youth YAD cards are due July 22 and dues for the 1992-93 year should be paid.

Chairpersons' reports were favorably received.

An audit was set for July 8 at 6:00 p.m. prior to the appreciation dinner.

With the resignation of Ruby Bolton from the Resolution Committee, Gladys Marek was appointed to serve on her place.

A proclamation was read and presented by President Reese to each of the ladies on the Quilting Committee. Not all were in attendance, but each deserves recognition and many thanks -- Gladys Marek, Adeline Kohutek, Vallie Tupy, Martha Palla, Martha Dubcak, Lillie Mikulas, Georgie Sodek, Mary Holik, Ruby Lewellen, Juanita Wychopen and Lorene Palla.

Lodge No. 94, Wheelock Since the time of the beginning of our lodge in 1910, I believe our lodge has held its regular meetings on the first Sunday of each month. There was good reason to hold the meetings at that particular time because most of the members were farmers and that was the only good available time they had.

Today, the occupational complexion of our members is so different from that of seventy-five years ago and there is no logical reason to hold the meetings on Sunday afternoon. In our last meeting, it was decided to change the date of our meetings (on a sixmonth trail basis) in order to make it more convenient for our members to attend. Accordingly, beginning in July 1992, our meetings will now be held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Our next meeting will be on July 2, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. We invite you to linger a while after the meeting for some social fellowship. Please, make a note of this change!

Other scholastic honors and awards Kristen received were: National Science Award, National English Award, Art Academic Award, National Math Award, UIL Scholar Award, Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence, and she was named Commended Scholar by the Texas Association of Secondary Principals.

The Commended Scholar Award makes her a member of the All-State Academic Team.

Kristen was active in sports and was voted MVP of the Danbury High School volleyball team, and was a member of the All-District volleyball and basketball teams.

Kristen is the daughter of Linda and Kenneth Piper of Danbury. She will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall and will be majoring in mathematics.

We congratulate Kristen for her excellent achievement.

Also to be congratulated is Lane Lostak, son of Lonnie and Eloise Lostak, who will be a senior at Danbury High School this fall. He received the Junior Class Student of the Year Award, the Accounting Award, and the Spanish II Award for his academic accomplishments. He was voted MVP in tennis and competed in the regional tennis tournament this year. Lane is on the high school golf team, and has been on the Danbury High School first-string basketball team for three years. This summer he is taking a freshman English course at Alvin Community College.

It was good to have Tommie Lostak at the meeting and we are happy to report he is recovering nicely from quintuple by-pass surgery of a month ago.

Lodge 177, Academy The June meeting was called to order June 10, 1992 by President Otis Beck.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members. All officers were present. FAC J.C. Johnson was able to attend the meeting after having surgery the last of May. Everyone wished him a fast recovery.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Fritz and were approved. All reports were given and approved.

Libby Bartek reported that a get well

Sunshine chairman reported that Tillie Gillis is doing well in the nursing home. Dona Hubenak has a heart condition and Bill McMillen has had cataract surgery and doing very well.

Micki Browning has a new baby and Marie Tesar has a new great-grandson.

Pauline Morbitzer, her mother and sisters are going to Czechoslovakia soon. Bon Voyage!

Hostesses for August are Mary Palachek, Flora Koci, Imogene Reeves and Florence Greer.

The Danbury Lodge No. 139 meeting of June 10 was held in the home of our secretary and her husband, Lorenda and David Baldwin. The meeting was called to order and the minutes of the April meeting were read because the lodge did not meet in May. The treasurer's report was given by Eloise Lostak.

Vice President Monte Baldwin discussed plans for starting a youth club and the possibility of the lodge sponsoring a Little League Baseball team in the future.

It was announced that Kristen Piper, a 1992 graduate of Danbury High School, has been chosen to receive the Lodge 139 Scholarship. She was the class valedictorian and graduated with a 4.91 grade point average. Kristen

card and flowers were sent to J.C. Johnson while he was in the hospital.

Rosie Lee Weadock reported she was going to the hospital Wednesday. The members wished her well.

One new member was written for the month which was John Dale Beasley.

The mother lodge gave the youth club an American flag which was presented by FAC J.C. Johnson to Renelle Wright, president of the youth club. (See picture).

J.C. Johnson introduced his grandson, Jason Sauls from Cypress, Texas who is staying with him for several weeks while he is recovering from surgery. J.C. also discussed having a "CLEANUP NIGHT" to do a major cleaning of the lodge hall. All members were urged to come and help.

After our next meeting which will be July 8th, we will start cleaning the hall and continue on July 9th.

Marcus D. Hutka, member of our Lodge 177, received a scholarship from the Supreme Lodge. Marcus is the son of John and Judy Hutka. Congratulations, Marcus.

Louis Driska is proud of his and Jean's granddaughter, Sueanne Hamons, who came in first in the UIL Spelling Test. (See picture for details.)

The Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 held their meeting on June 9 with President Clara Cohen presiding.

Members joined in to sing "In The Good Old Summertime," which seems to have finally arrived after an unusually cool spring. Mona Lee Hattendorf is now a new member after being our guest many times. We're glad you joined our Circle, Mona. Visitors Christi Barbrick, Ashley Barrett and Jonathan Morbitzer were introduced.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved after one correction. Treasurer's report was filed as read. The secretary read a letter from the Dallas Czech Ladies Circle in which they accepted our invitation of July 14 to visit us. Over forty people are planning to make the trip and we

The Circle met June 11th with 22 members and 9 guests present. Our guests were Vlasta Getchell, Patty and Loretta Laza, Sandra Trojacek, Julie Fowler, Joe Vlk, Joe Kudrna, Randy Trojacek and Michael Fowler. It was good to have Sisters Frances Vita and Frances Kudrna back with us.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Tyler James.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the April and May minutes. Both were approved as read. Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. It was accepted as given.

Sunshine Stacie Hejny sent a get well greeting to Sister Mary Kopecek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to June birthday celebrants. Quilt was quilted for Sister Stacie Hejny. A thank you note was read from Sister Rosie Bednar thanking all the sisters who quilted on her quilt.

Sister Bednar gave a donation to the Circle for quilt quilted and Sister Alene Skrivanek donated a pound of coffee. Sisters who sent greetings were Mary Polasek, Julie Harris, Sidney Bridewell, Vallie Tupy and Anne Zvolanek. Sister Georgia Tupy brought a beautifully decorated "going-away" cake for Sisters Mary Sebestik and Alice Roberts. Everyone enjoyed the good cake. You will hear about our trip later.

We will have a "WHITE ELEPHANT" sale at our July meeting.

Sister Vlasta Laznovsky announced that we will have an opportunity to visit the Sokol museum, which is located in the Sokol building, at our July meeting. It is very interesting, so do not miss seeing it. Tickets on a quilt will be for sale at our August meeting.

She plans to attend North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. My granddaughter Sheila Roberts recently completed a flight attendant's course in Houston and is now a flight attendant on a major airline. She is based in Newark, New Jersey. My daughter Harriet Roberts just returned from a 2-week trip to Sicily with the Navy Reserve.

Temple, Texas Dear Brothers and Sisters, Please allow me to express my sincere appreciation to the delegates of the 26th SPJST Convention in Victoria. Thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me to serve as Vestnik editor following the retirement of Brother Rudy Sefcik later this year.

I am indeed humbled by your support, considering the extraordinary contribution of time and energy that Brother Sefcik has devoted to the Society.

I am also very grateful to those members of the SPJST who have, over the past six months, shared with me their views on many of the difficult questions facing the Society. Clearly, there is a need for all of us to work together more closely. I am optimistic about what can be achieved through such a collaborative effort. In the words of Daniel Webster: There are many objects of great value to man which cannot he attained by unconnected individuals, but must be attained if at all, by association.

Working as a team we can develop the Vestniik's role as a lively forum for the exchange of SPJST fraternal and financial reports, information and ideas. I look forward to getting to know you and exploring your ideas for the Vestnik in the coming weeks, months and years.

Dear Readers, We had our monthly Lodge 9 youth meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 1992 at 6:45 p.m.

We talked about putting on a program at the senior citizen social and other business.

After the meeting, my mother and I had some games to play. We played a silly game called "Hi, My Name is Joe" that I learned at school. We also had a balloon race and a water balloon toss. It was fun even though I got wet

in the balloon toss.

Our next meeting will be July 1st at 6:45 p.m.

Youth Club Met To Elect Officers Ennis

Dear Readers, This was my first meeting to go to as a member of the youth club. It was fun. We made sun catchers. We also elected officers. I was almost elected as sergeant-at-arms.

While this letter is written, I cannot wait until YAD so I can see my friends and find out what to make for next year. This time YAD will be at our lodge on June 28th. I hope to see everybody there.

My Mom and Dad are going to the SPJST Convention and I'm going to miss them. Our next meeting will be July 1st. We plan to go watch the fire works at the Motorplex on July 4 and go to Six Flags and Wet-'N-Wild soon.

Hopefully everybody can go. See you soon.

Dear Readers, The Snook Lodge No. 9 Youth Club put on a program honoring Flag Day and the Fourth of July at the senior citizens' social on June 24th.

Jess Janek and I each read a poem about our flag. Amanda Baumann played "America" on her flute and her sister, Vicki, read a story about our country's birthday. Then, we all sang "God Bless America" and "Happy Birthday, America."

Everyone enjoyed the program and invited us to stay for lunch.

We, the officers of Lodge No. 80, Holland and on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of MARVIN JOHN KROPP, age 61, of Bartlett, who passed away May 29, 1992 in a Taylor hospital.

Brother Kropp was born in San Gabriel to John Kropp and Hermina Marek. He was a manager of Black Land Gin for 10 years and had lived in Bartlett for 21 years. He was a member of S.S. Cyrill and Methodius Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the SPJST. Services for Brother Kropp were held on Monday, June 1 at S.S. Cyrill Catholic Church with the Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Kropp of Bartlett; a daughter, Diane Evans of Taylor; two sons, Larry Kropp of George Air Force Base, California and John Kropp of Bartlett; a sister, Johnnye Lee Mokry of Corpus Christi; a brother, Richard Pekar of Bartlett; and four grandchildren.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge New Tabor No. 17 on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of brother JOHN HEJL, 83, of Caldwell, Texas, who died early Monday morning, February 3, 1992 in the Leisure Lodge Nursing Home.

Mr. Hejl was born September 27, 1908 in Snook, son of the late Vince and Frances Kosina Hejl. He attended the Volney Community School, was baptized and confirmed in the Brethren Faith and attended one year of business college in Dallas. He then married Eldena Emily Kallus on February 17, 1931 in Caldwell with the Methodist Minister Reverend W.E. Hassler officiating.

Mr. Hejl was employed at Woodson Lumber Company for over 58 years as general manager, bookkeeper and lumber buyer. During his lifetime, he raised cattle on his farm in Burleson County and also enjoyed building things in his shop near his home. He loved gardening, fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry and Vinc Hejl.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge New Tabor No. 17 on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of sister ROSIE TRCALEK DUSEK, 91 years, 10 months and seven days, of Caldwell, who died Friday morning, May 15, 1992 in the Burleson County Memorial Hospital.

Rosie Thresia Trcalek Dusek was born July 8, 1900 in the New Tabor community, daughter of the late John and Helen Zalobney Trcalek. Rosie and Frank V. Dusek were married on November 16, 1917 and to this union they were blessed with five sons. She was a lifelong resident of Burleson County.

Mrs. Dusek was baptized on October 7, 1900 at the New Tabor Brethren Church by the Reverend B. Kobrchet.

She was confirmed on October 24, 1914 by Reverend Anton Motycka.

She was a lifelong member of New Tabor Brethren Church. She was a charter member of the Christian Sisters Society of New Tabor Brethren Church, a charter member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4458 of Caldwell and also a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor.

Rosie attended Liberty School. She was a homemaker who loved working outside in her garden and growing flowers.

Mrs. Dusek was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, on November 16, 1976; twin sons on June 13, 1924; her parents, John and Helen Trcalek; two sisters, Helen and Annie Sefcik; and one brother in infancy.

She is survived by three sons, Theodore F. Dusek, Sr. and his wife, Joyce of Caldwell; Jerry J. Dusek and his wife, Vickie of Bryan; Daniel Dusek and his wife, Marie of Tyler; one brother, John Trcalek and his wife, Marie of Caldwell; one sister, Milady Faust of Caldwell; also five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Chris Rodgiguez, Ted Dusek, Dennis Dusek, Daniel Trcalek, Tony Holman, Glenn Faust, B.J. Sebesta, David Sefcik and Dick Dusek.

Arrangements were by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge New Tabor No. 17 on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of brother BEN A. VAVRA, 82, who died Saturday evening, May 16, 1992 in the Veterans Administration Nursing Center in Temple, Texas.

Mr. Vavra was a lifelong resident of Caldwell, Texas. He was born December 4, 1909 in the New Tabor community in Burleson County. He was the son of the late Joseph Nichols and Annie Nedbalek Vavra. He was baptized January 23, 1910 and later confirmed on May 25, 1925 in New Tabor Brethren Church by Reverend Antone Motycka. He attended the New Tabor community school. Mr. Vavra was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps on March 19, 1942 at Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells. He served as an airplane mechanic in the South Pacific Theatre. He was discharged on January 5, 1945 at Alamogordo Army Air Field in Alamogordo, New Mexico, with the rank of corporal. He married Ruby Prieve on February 13, 1945. The ceremony was performed by Reverend R.C. Poehlmann in the Elizabeth Lutheran Church. Mr. Vavra was a salesman briefly with the CocaCola Company, but then received the Burleson County Distributorship for Lone Star Beer Company, which he had for 15 1/2 years until his retirement.

He was a member of New Tabor Brethren Church, the SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor, member of CSA (Czechoslovakia Society of America).

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 451 in Caldwell, and the Disabled American Veterans Post 86 in Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Annie Vavra; an infant son on February 15, 1950; three brothers, Frank, Joe and John Vavra; two sisters, Albina Bobalik and Annie Trcalek.

Survivors include his wife Ruby Vavra; two brothers, Henry V. Vavra and Robert L. Vavra, both of Caldwell; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 1992 from the Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell with the Reverend John Baletka and Reverend Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment was in the Elizabeth Lutheran Church Cemetery in Caldwell with graveside services under the auspices of the American Legion Post 451 and the Disabled American Veterans Post 86 of Caldwell.

He was ,a pumper for Amerada-Hess Corporation, and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 4, and St. Helen's Catholic Church in Georgetown.

Surviving him are his wife, Helen Mican Cervenka; two daughters, Sharon Rogers of Georgetown and Mary Jane Cervenka of Richmond; a sister, Vanice Krejci of Hallettsville; and three grandchildren.

Visitation began at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. Rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home. The body lay-in-state at the funeral home until 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 27 at which time it was taken to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, where funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Celestino Say officiating. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Hallettsville.

Sister Frances Janik was born December 11, 1919 in Wallis, Texas.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of East Bernard, SPJST Lodge No. 28, and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband, John M. Brother Haskovec was born February 17, 1909 in Telico, the son of John and Mary Toupal Haskovec. He was reared in Telico and attended Telico schools.

On June 28, 1932, he was married to Emma Novy of Crisp. After their marriage they lived. in Crisp where he was engaged in farming.

During World War II, he was a Seabee with the U.S. Navy for 4 years, having served in the Pacific Theatre

and also in Panama. Mrs. Haskovec preceded him in death October 12, 1986.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25, and the St. John Catholic Church.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews including Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hroza of Ennis. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents, a sister and four brothers.

Rosary was recited at 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday in the Keever Chapel. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Keever Chapel with the Rev. Robert Williams officiating. Interment was in the Crisp Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Expression Of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge No. 187, Round Rock wish to express their deepest sympathy to the family of ARNOLD LESCHBER, who passed away Thursday, April 16, 1992 in a Round Rock hospital.

Arnold Robert Leschber, age 68, was born February 3, 1924 in Williamson County, the son of Herman Andrew and Matilda (Merkord) Leschber. A farmer all his life, he had lived in Hutto for the past 45 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church at West Taylor, where he served as a member of the church council. He was a member of the Hutto School Board, Hutto Co-op Grain Board, Hutto Co-op Board, chairman of the SPJST Lodge 187 board for six years. He served in World War II as a staff sergeant having earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Posts.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mariola Bergquist officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews, Max Kattner, J.R. Bateman, Dennis Leschber, David French, Harvey McClung, Kelly Fuessel, and Charlie Betak. Gary Kattner was honorary pallbearer.

Survivors include his wife, Allene Leschber of Hutto; two sons, Emory Leschber and wife Joy Dell, Larry Leschber and wife Pam of Hutto; a sister, Lillie Kattner of Nederland; a brother, Harry Leschber of Thorndale; four grandchildren, Donny, Chris, Ronny and Trish Leschber.

We, the Resolution Committee on behalf of the members of Lodge 23, Moravia express our sympathy to the family of our departed sister LILLIAN SCHNEIDER, who passed away at her home at Moravia on Tuesday, May 26, 1992 at the age of 84.

Sister Schneider was born at Moravia on May 12, 1908 to Frank and Marie (Lanca) Wenglar. She attended school at Radhost and Moravia. On July 3, 1939 she and Earl Schneider were united in marriage in California, but had resided in Moravia since 1967 and was a member of Moravia Catholic Church and SPJST Moravia Lodge No. 23.

Recitation of the rosary, led by Rev. Brian Crookes, was held Wednesday, May 27 at 8:00 p.m. in SchwenkeBaumgarten Funeral Chapel in Schulenburg.

Christian Burial Mass was held Thursday, May 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia, Texas with Rev. Brian Crookes officiating. Burial followed in the Moravia Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors are a step-son, Bob Schneider of Arizona; five sisters, Willie Mae Broz, Edith Schwartz and Cecile Herzik of Moravia, Elenora Koenig of Austin, Marian Maresh of Corpus Christi; two brothers, L.A. Wenglar of Moravia, James Wenglar of El Campo; two step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sister Schneider was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Pallbearers were nephews, Phil Guenther of Moravia, Frank Broz of Austin, Dan Wenglar of Missouri City, Charles A. Maresh of Corpus Christi, Joe Krnavek and Joseph Krnavek, Jr. of La Grange.

Zdrubek No. 112, Guy, Texas on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister FRANCES VALKA, age 76 years, who passed away on May 28, 1992 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.

She was born on December 1, 1915 in Fairchilds, Texas to Mike and Rosalie Gejewski. She was a member of St. Michael's Church in Needville.

Funeral services were held at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Saturday, May 30, with the Rev. James Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include a stepson, Leroy Slacalek and wife Mollie of Damon; one grandson, Andy Slacalek and wife Patti of Damon; one brother, Daniel Gajewski of Rosenberg; five sisters, Mary Stajanek of Georgetown, Helen Reynolds of Rosenberg, Celia Krolczyk of Richmond, Lillie Sembera of Houston, and Alice Gerken of Fairchilds; also other relatives and friends.

Services were under the direction of Garmany and Carden Funeral Director's, Inc. in Needville.

We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother RAYMOND 0. CEDIDLA, who died Monday evening, June 1, 1992 in a Caldwell hospital.

Brother Cedidla was born May 17, 1916 in Shiner, Texas. He was the son of the late Joe and Rosie Trcalek Cedidla. While he was young, his family moved to the Providence community in Burleson County. When he was 16, he moved with his family to Sacramento, California, but later returned to Burleson County. He was inducted into the United States Army during World War II. He married Vlasta Albina Urbanovsky on October 17, 1945, in the Cooks Point community, and then returned to England where he served as a medic in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of corporal. After his military service, he returned to Cooks Point where he became a water well driller and worked in- construction until the opening of Alcoa plant in

Rockdale where he worked as an equipment operator until his retirement in 1980.

Brother Cedidla was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church. He was a member of United Steel Workers Union No. 4586 in Rockdale, Campbell-Williams VFW Post 4458 and American Legion Post 451, both in Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joe Cedidla.

Survivors include his wife, Vlasta Cedidla of Caldwell; daughter and son-in-law, Ray Ann and Kenneth Ford; son, Edmund Cedidla of Caldwell; four grandchildren; sister and her husband, Rosie and Theodore Weichert of Caldwell and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held June 4, 1992 from the Caldwell Brethren Church with Rev. Richard Stone and Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating.Interment followed in the Cooks Point Cemetery near Caldwell.

In Memoriam LYDIA S. BARON Sister Lydia S. Baron died May 27, 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia, at age 93.

Services were held Saturday, May 30 at Our Lady of The Assumption Catholic Church in Atlanta with Father Edward Murray officiating, with burial in Atlanta. She belonged to SPJST Home Office Lodge No. 999, and was buried with her 50-year pin.

Mrs. Baron was born July 10, 1898, in Fayette County, Texas, the daughter of Charles and Karolina Matyas Suchma. She was the widow of the late Edwin A. Baron, also formerly of Texas, who died in 1987. They had lived in the Savannah area for 67 years.

Survivors include a daughter Margaret Taylor, and a son Edwin Baron, both of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Virginia Beard of Greenville, South Carolina, Leslie Anne Payne of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Gordon Taylor of Savannah, Georgia and David Taylor of Silver Spring, Maryland; four great-grandchildren, Elisabeth Beard and Laura Beard of Greenville and Emily Taylor and Kenneth Taylor of Savannah; four sisters, Mary Vick of Big Spring, Hattie Padon of West Columbia, Eleanor Ward of Rosenberg and Anita Baxley of Sunrise Beach, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Features As I See It By: W.J. "Bill" Malina "United we stand, divided we fall" is an axiom that still holds true in spite of the modern tendency of people to want to be independent and autonomous. In the last several years we have seen the collapse of communist nations and a resurgence of regional identity and an ethnic awareness in them. Only in Germany is there an outward appearance of the desire for unity, in most of the other former communist nations there is the emer-

gence of a desire for regional independence along former or traditional boundaries.

The former Soviet Union has been split up into several new independent nations, the strongest of which are Russia and Ukraine. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have returned to their former status as independent nations.

What fate awaits these former Soviet states remains to be seen; however, it is apparent that the responsibility of freedom and independence has brought on unanticipated conflicts between them.

Nowhere is there more dramatic evidence of conflict caused by the disintegration of political unity than in Yugoslavia. The unfortunate conflicts in Yugoslavia are so complicated that it would be impossible and improper to comment on them at this time. Suffice it to say that most of the regional former communist nations involi e Slavic people. It is unfortunate, b it there seems to a trait among Sla,: people not to be able to get along each other.

In Czechoslovakia there is an intensifying division between Czechs and Slovaks, a division that may lead to an unfortunate split of their country. To add to the turmoil, there is a growing ethnic awareness and autonomous attitude among the Moravians, who are now usually identified as being Czechs. It is hard for Americans to understand the problems and frustrations of people whose individuality has been suppressed. When our country was formed 216 years ago, individualism was placed secondary to mutual unity.

The concept of "all for one and one for all" has kept our country strong. There is no denying that we have problems, but they are problems which our founding fathers had no way of anticipating. One has to admit that the widely publicized cruel, senseless and destructive actions of a few people in our country do not provide an incentive for others to emulate. It must be remembered that there are untold numbers of people in our country who enjoy freedom, peace, happiness and prosperity. We have learned that we can live in unity in spite of our individuality and personal ethnic differences.

In 1918, the nation of Czechoslovakia was founded upon the concept of the unity of its people and was patterned after the United States. Today, after a period of more than fifty years of submission to autocratic rule, some people are advocating the destruction of that nation by creating two independent nations which would separate Slovakia from Bohemia and Moravia.

This kind of separation would weaken and hinder the efforts of the Slavic people in Central Europe to have better, more secure and productive lives.

There is no question that in Czechoslovakia, as well as in other former :ommunist nations, there is a pressing need to solve social and economic problems quickly, but not at the expense of national disintegration.

Remember the old saying "Rome was not built in a day," then remember also that King Solomon's Temple was not rebuilt quickly. Quality growth and development, as well as regeneration, also does not come quickly, it must be formed with love and trust; it must not be hampered with selfish or selfcentered actions done without adequate forethought and planning.

It is our fraternal responsibility to help form and create a benevolent image of the United States so that others can and will look up to us as an example to emulate.

Stacha-Ivy Vows Read In Brethren Rites Brenda Lee Stacha and Steven Randall Ivy exchanged marriage vows on Saturday, April 25, 1992 in the Taylor Brethren Church The Rev. James Fiejl and the Rev. Daniel Marek officiated the service at 3:30 p.m.

The bride is the daughter of Dorothy Stacha Markert of Taylor and the late Clifton Stacha Sr. The bridegroom is the son of Bonnye Ivy of Houston and the late Glenn Ivy. The church altar held an arrangement of white gladiolus, daisies and blue carnations. Candelabras with greenery and bows were placed at the front of the church.

Wedding selections were provided by organist Edmund Rader who accompanied vocalists Cheryl Rader and Edmund Rader.

Jan Brown attended the bride as maid of honor. Matron of honor was Judy Sibert. Bridesmaids were Surenda Betak, and Linda Brewer. Junior bridesmaid was Kimberly Raesz.

The attendants wore floor-length royal blue taffeta dresses designed with close-fitting front and sweetheart neckline. Flared skirts were accented by four tiers of ruffles and an attached bow at the waist. Each carried a lighted candle in a brandy snifter decorated with a cascade of white roses.

Flower girls were Sarah Raesz and Laurie Raesz. Honorary flower girl was Leslie Roberts. They wore dresses to match the attendants.

Best man was Christopher Kester.

Groomsmen were Scott Roberts, Hank Wallace, and Anthony Pope. Junior groomsman was Chris Gonzales. They were dressed in black tuxedos with Spencer-cut coats.

Ushers were Chet Mikulencak, Shaun Raesz, Steve Roberts, and Stuart Roberts. Ring bearers were Brandon and Bradley Raesz, who were dressed in tuxedos with tails.

The bride entered the church with her brother, Clifton Stacha Jr., and was given in marriage by both her mother and brother. She had selected a winter white satin dress with Queen Anne neckline, long, bishop sleeves, and a heart-shaped back. The full skirt and cathedral train were appliqued with lace. The dress was trimmed with reembroidered French lace embellished with sequins and pearls.

Her fingertip veil and blusher were held by a wreath of roses adorned with

pearl loops and Austrian crystals. She carried a bouquet of white roses, baby's breath, and pearl stems with cascading ivy and stephanotis.

A dinner and dance reception was hosted at the SPJST Hall in Taylor.

Members of the houseparty included Sharon Betak, Pat Daffin, Michelle Mikulencak, Dorothy Mikulencak, Alice Schwenke, Courtney Steffek, Becky Steffek, Irene Mikulencak, Mandy Wallace, Ann Marie Rachuir, Denise Markert, Pat Raesz, Brenda Raesz, Karen Raesz, Michelle Raesz, Telisha Raesz, Teri Raesz, and Holly Raesz. Fay Betak served as coordinator.

Dance music was by Michael Craig's Mobile Music Machine. The grand march was led by Carol and John Raesz.

The bride is employed at the Texas Department of Public Safety in Austin.

The bridegroom is employed by Astro World/Water World of Houston.

They took a wedding trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

A rehearsal dinner was hosted at the Sirloin Stockade.

Receives Alumni Council Award

At the Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association of Princeton University held on June 6, 1992, Douglas E. Yeager of Dallas, Texas was the recipient of The Alumni Council Award for Service to Princeton.

The citation (copy attached) conferred in connection with the award detailed his long history of outstanding service to the University and recognized his "Texas can-do attitude."

Yeager, who graduated from Princeton University in 1969, and the University of Texas Law School in 1972, practices business law and litigation in Dallas with the firm of Douglas E. Yeager, P.C. He is the son of Bill T. Yeager of Houston, a 1965 graduate of Spring High School, and a member of SPJST Lodge 84 in Dallas.

Present at the Awards Ceremony in Princeton, New Jersey, were his wife, Justine Pokladnik Yeager, and Justine's children, Neal and Keri Anderson. ***

The Alumni Council Award For Service To Princeton Douglas E. Yeager '69 When Doug Yeager was a senior at Spring Branch High School in Houston an enthusiastic Princeton alumnus told him all about Old Nassau. "I didn't even know where Princeton was," Doug recalls, "but I decided it must be something pretty special." Young Doug set off for Princeton without ever having seen it, the first person in his family to attend college.

Now Doug himself has become Princeton's ambassador to the Lone Star State. Deep in the heart of Texas, Doug Yeager's efforts on behalf of his alma mater are almost legendary. No job has ever been too big or too small for him.

He is a former president of the Princeton Alumni Association of Dallas and former chair of its Schools Committee. Doug worked to bring the Fort Worth alumni into the Dallas association, creating the Princeton Association of Dallas-Fort Worth. He included area parents in all association activities, finding their enthusiasm for today's Princeton inspiring. He says parents are a tremendous asset in recruiting future Lone Star Tigers.

The Declaration of Independence is the work of men whose courage it is not easy to estimate at this point of time. The whole philosophy of free government is contained in these words of that immortal document: "When, in the course of human events,

Doug is currently PADFW public relations chair and a member of the Schools Committee. He publishes a regular newsletter that keeps Texan Princetonians up to date on each other's activities. Perhaps his years as assistant student manager in Commons taught him that Texans need supplemental feedings, for every year he organizes a Lone Star Tiger barbeque on campus for Texan students and their friends.

He coordinated a stellar Princeton Comes to the Southwest conference in 1989 which, in addition to University speakers, offered a training session for regional alumni, a mini-Triangle revue and a festive barbeque.

There is from these excerpts from the Declaration of Independence a lesson to be learned for all of us today. It is a lesson of evaluation of liberty and pur-. suit of happiness, evaluation of freedom, which we so often take for granted.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, may the spirit of Fourth of July 1776 abide with us, because it is emblematic of the purpose for which we have been banded together for generations. Let us keep alive the spirit, the real meaning of Independence Day. At Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776 when the great Benjamin Franklin, after having affixed his signature to the Declaration of Indepndence, was walking out of the hall, a woman bystander said to him.

"What kind of a government have you given us?" And Benjamin Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it."

For 216 years, through several major wars against foreign foes, through one bloody Civil War, through economic upheavals, through trials and tribulations, our Republic has been preserved.

And so to Mr. Franklin, we say as of July 4, 1992, our democracy has been preserved and it is our honest effort that we who now enjoy this cherished heritage of democracy will be able to pass it along to future generations as strong and as pure as when it came to us.

Our members can apply the same as stated above to our own SPJST Society.
