Generations Are Continuing!

Recently on Easter Sunday, the Dorotik family celebrated Georgia Dorotik's - 60th" birthday having been on April 9th. Also celebrating was Georgia's oldest child, Anthony, to be "40" on July 24th, and her youngest child, Marcy, who was "20" on April 5th.

Mrs. Georgia Dorotik, past youth leader and assistant youth leader of Lodge Taiton No. 30, for 26 years, is continuing her dedication in her children and grandchildren. Anthony and Wanda's four children are very active members of Lodge No. 30 Youth Club with them achieving many State awards in recent years. Marcy is now presently assistant youth leader of Lodge No. 30 and is in charge of YAD activities with the youth. Her speech she gave as State SPJST Queen was quite meaningful to her.

Many of Mrs. Dorotik's other flint, children have also continued actively in the SPJST programs. Clare and Rosann's children are Taiton Lodge No. 30 youth members. Karen is presently Taiton Youth Leader and her four children are active members with her; daughter, Lenice now president of Taiton Youth Club and reigning District VI Queen -- two same positions Karen also held 18 years ago in the 1973-74 year.

We thank, Mrs. Dorotik, our mother, for her guidance, patience, and insight over the years!

Through our working with the SPJST, we have learned various necessary ingredients of life helping us to become better individuals dealing with life's daily circumstances. Again, we thank our mother for having us be a part of the SPJST organization.

A Reminder!!!

We have mentioned this subject a number of times since October 1991 and we repeat again: we have only received a few lodge histories for the XXVI Convention issue thus far, and we are wondering what in the world is happening that we are not receiving more of this important information, because TIME is fleeting by and, it is, only about a 1 1/2 until the SPJST Convention will take place. WE ASK FOR YOUR COOPERATION! *** After reviewing and giving some thought and consideration to the committees', officers' and directors' reports in the May 13th Vestnik issue, your editor has several observations to share.

In Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report, we noticed where he has been able to dispose of the Lodge No. 178 Longview facility and property, though at a loss to our Society.

In many of the Supreme Lodge quarterly meetings, the subject of this property was brought up for consideration and there were various ideas planned in an attempt to settle this investment at a profitable manner. Nevertheless, it was apparent that profitable solutions. would not transpire. This editor is sure that Brother Mikeska is relieved that he can discontinue carrying the property on his books.

Your editor will devote most of the editorial in observations dealing with the position of "Editor."

The By-Law Committee report adds a few conditions pertaining to the editor to Article 95, one of them being that "The editor shall be headquartered in Supreme Lodge Building."

Not too long ago, the SPJST By-laws stipulated that the editor would live in the city where the Vestnik was published and that was the case until 1980 (The editor moved to West from Houston in December 1968.)

In 1979 the printing of Vestnik was placed for bids and the printing company in Temple (about 10 blocks from Supreme Lodge building) got the bid.

This meant that the editor could move to Temple (the move to be paid for by Society or travel to the printshop every Friday to Temple). The editor traveled at his own expense for four years to Temple and January 1, 1984, the contract was transferred to Hill County Press, Inc. in Hillsboro and renewed, again, for four years in January 1, 1988 and is there as of this date.

Until January 1, 1980 the Society paid for the editor's office and telephone next to the printshop and, as of January 1, 1980, the publisher wanted to use the office. The editor was asked by the Supreme Lodge to see if there was an office available and the only one available was $125.00 per month (somewhat out of the way) so the editor moved the office to his home and

used his telephone for communications and this situation has continued to present date.

By personal decision in this case, the editor has saved the Society approximately $18,000 in the past 12 years ($125 mon. x 12 mo. x 12 years) in addition to telephone expense.

After paying his own travel expenses to Temple for four years every Friday (110-mile round trip) and Hillsboro (32-mile round trip) for four years, in January 1989, he advised the Supreme Lodge that he would be sending monthly requisitions to the secretarytreasurer for each month's travel at 30 cents a mile which would amount to approximately $500 a year.

There was some discussion felt that this was like paying for the mileage from their home to their office to work, whereas, your editor advised them (Supreme Lodge) that this was travel from his office to the printshop and was a required trip in order to print the Vestnik.

At any rate, the article is self-explanatory in the 1988 SPJST Convention Proceedings on page 57, under "Other Recommendations": 1. Officers, Directors, Editor, Members on Standing Committees, and other authorized personnel using a personal car for the use of Society work, and are authorized personnel to travel for the Society, be paid 30 cents per mile. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. The Finance Committee in their 1992 proposals (printed in 5-13-92; page 10) Vestnik issue revealed: (1) Officers, Directors, Editor, Members of Standing Committees, and other authorized personnel using a personnel car for the use of the Society work, and are authorized personnel to travel for the society, be paid 30 cents per mile.

At any rate, the Supreme Lodge meeting adjourned their quarterly meeting for that day.

The next day I was advised that the subject was discussed the next morning and voted down. The point that your editor is trying to convey is NOT the issue of mileage money, but, rather the apparent violation of said decision approved by our delegates in the 1988 convention assembly.

Your editor sent the figures to the Finance Committee, however, some members on the committee, felt they could not act on it, and that the convention would have to discuss this issue.

This editor also submitted to the Finance Committee that our Society pay the medical insurance premiums for any individual or employee who has worked for the Society for 20 years or more after they retire; this is being practiced NOW, however, there is NO formal documentation of said subject.

Sales Representative workshops for Continuing Education were held recently at Lodge 172, Pasadena; Lodge 191, Lufkin; and Lodge 81, Needville.

SFR Helen Hegwood instructed sales representatives on the many types of SPJST insurance plans available to current and prospective members according to age groups and needs. She also discussed the different target groups for insurance sales.

Although continuing education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status and to better serve the members. Sales workshops such as this also enable the field force :o enlist the efforts of the lodge officers in assisting their sales repre-

From State FAC Fall District Family Fun Days Contest One of our district contests has a suggested change for the fall. It is suggested that the officers of each district change the quilt contest to a needlework contest. The reason: a smaller item can be made faster and more members would have the advantage to enter the contest.

Each district should inform their membership of this change, if they plan to change, to give members time to make the item they wish to enter.

We will keep the rules VERY BRIEF. 1. Contestants must be 18 years of age or older.

2. Items must be made entirely by hand.

3. Items to include embroidery, crocheting, knitting and needlepoint.

4. Items will be judged on creative ability and skill, appearance and design, educational value, neatness.

Reimbursements to the district treasurer for the contests remain the same, $25.00 per contest and a small plaque for the first place winners.

Each district should plan to have a better attendance than last year.

Registration forms, rules and judges' sheets will be mailed to District FAC. If we can be of more assistance to you, please give us a call.

Dear Members: Lodge No. 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting on May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with all officers present, except Financial Secretary Martha Trcalek.

FAC Clarence Sefcik reported that Donnie and Glen Paul won third place in the "42" Tournament at Snook.

Brother Sefcik, also, reported that Lodge 17 would hold its annual Tarok Tournament on July 18.

The District I fall meeting will be held at New Tabor on September 20th.

The next meeting will be held on June 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, May 17, 1992 thirteen members met for the regular monthly meeting at the lodge hall.

Due to the absence of President Ricky Ford, our vice president, Mildred Horak, called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. The pledge to the flag was recited by all present.

The secretary and treasurer gave their reports and they were approved as read.

The picnic to be held on July 26 was discussed.

Several different organizations will sponsor booths at the picnic.

By carried motion, the June meeting will be held on June 28, the fourth Sunday, instead of the third Sunday due to it being Father's Day. There being no further business the meeting adjourned. Hope everyone has a nice and safe summer vacation!

He announced a "picnic only" meeting on May 15, the change of regular monthly meeting to June 12 at 7:00 p.m. with no meal planned, a delegate meeting on May 29, and a picnic work day on June 6, early a.m.

FAC Ruth Hanusch announced these future events -- August 15 State Royalty at Lodge 177, Academy and August 16, State YAD at the Mayborn Center in Temple, and November 14, State Volleyball Tournament.

Once again Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch is to be commended for her conscientious effort to save Lodge 47 money whenever possible. As a result of some investigation, Sister Mihatsch received a refund because of Star Hall's tax exempt status.

Chairpersons' reports were favorably received.

Lodge 47 had a member who attained the age of 96 with paidup status, Frank Shenkir. He and members of his family were in attendance -- daughter Adeline Kohutek and son Franklin Shenkir and wife, Phyllis, son-in-law Willie E. Kohutek, grandson Ralph Kohutek and wife, Dorothy, Diane Kohutek and Mr. Shenkir's great-grandchildren Amy, Lori, Jennifer, Krista, Sarah and Micah Kohutek. It was obvious Mr. Shenkir was proud of his family and they of him.

Birthday wishes go out to Ann Hejl, Mary Vasicek, Ralph Kohutek, Lillie Mikulas, Henry Mares, Patsy Koslovsky, Teresa Klecka and Lillian Hejl.

Celebrating anniversaries were Edwin and Judy Pechal, George and Marie Pavelka and Tom and Margaret Gibson.

To honor the mothers for Mother's Day, a "mothers only door prize drawing. Winners were Dolores Skrabanek, Elvern Frenzel, Ann Hejl, and Della Mares.

Frank Klinkovsky gave the Blessing and the meeting was adjourned.

President John Emery called the first quarterly meeting of 1992 to order. He welcomed all members present and gave a special welcome to Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

Everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed Brother Charlie Kucera who died on December 31, 1991.

All officers were present. Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the November 1 meeting, which were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report, this report was also approved as read. She reported insurance increases on David Kolar signed up by Sales Representative Rudy Sefcik; also on Nicholas Deiterman, Nathan Kaluza, Becky Kapavik, Paula Kapavik, Sharon Kapavik and Kevin Maier by Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave his report which was also approved as read.

Sister Mona Zahirniak reported that the Audit Committee met and found all records in order.

The following 50-year members will be honored at our next meeting, namely, John E. Kasik, Jerry R. Marek, Jerry J. Mrkos and Martha Sulak. We congratulate these members for having achieved this milestone. A meal will be planned for this occasion by Sister Lillie Mynar and the Kitchen Committee. Ladies of our lodge are requested to bring a special dessert to accompany this meal.

Sokol West was applauded for their hard work in remodeling the kitchen area. The improvement is remarkable.

Sister Beanie Kacir was remembered for her royal dedication and service to our lodge. She is sorely missed. FAC Maxine Sefcik will complete the hours and monies report of Fraternal Service that Sister Kacir took care of in the past. ALL members were reminded about the importance of keeping these records and turning them in.

A discussion was held regarding hosting a district meeting, but this was tabled until the next meeting.

Brother Rudy Sefcik reminded all convention delegates to prepare themselves for the upcoming convention.

Wednesday, May 27, 1992—VESTNIK/5 Much information is available in the Vestnik regarding by-law changes, and other important items of interest to the delegates. These should be studied in a serious manner.

President John Emery introduced Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar who enlightened us with a very interesting discussion regarding the State Officers' Workshop held in Elgin that Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska was in charge of. Several questions were answered and suggestions were made regarding lodge affairs. He also commended Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza for his hard work and accomplishments. We sincerely thank President Leshikar, for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us for this meeting.

The meeting was adjourned.

Everyone enjoyed fellowship, refreshments and food. Lillie Mynar was the winner of the door prize.

Our second quarterly meeting will be held in Lone Star Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5th. Let us try for a large attendance to honor 50-year members.

Lodge 63 - Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and annual barbecue dinner on June 7, 1992 at the Sweet Home Community Center. We will begin with a social hour at noon and a barbecue chicken dinner will be served at 1:00 p.m. Members are asked to bring a dessert and/or side dish to be served with the meal. After the meal, we will have a short business meeting with reports from the various committees. Door prizes will be drawn and someone with a birthday in April, May or June will win a cake baked by Louise Koehler. We will also honor our 50-year pin recipients, Agnes Chomout, Franklin Kopecky, Steve Kurtz, Otto Salena, and Louise Mae Tesch.

Liquid refreshments and entertainment will be provided by the lodge as usual.

Please note the earlier meeting date due to Father's Day falling on our usual third Sunday. Come out on June 7th and enjoy the meal and afternoon with your friends in Sweet Home.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Despite the rainy weather twentyseven members and guests attended the monthly meeting on Sunday, May 17, 1992. For our noon meal members had been asked to bring a meat dish and vegetable, with dessert optional. What a variety of delicious meats and casseroles there were to enjoy! Mary Werner, kitchen chairman, and her helpers thank all the sisters for the good food they prepared and brought.

At 1:00 p.m. President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Sister Delores Macha led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Alvin Palat and Brother Louis Hanus, District V director, were welcomed as our guests.

All officers were present. Minutes of the April meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner. She also read the financial secretary's report and a thank

you note from the family of Margaret Pollock.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall read the treasurer's report for April.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel read the calendar of events scheduled for the hall during the upcoming month, followed by a detailed report on the income and expenses of the Special Fund. All officers' reports were approved.

Your reporter recently received a cheerful letter from Sister Vlasta Nowotny who is in Autumn Hills in Sugarland. She has missed the meetings and is looking forward to being back in Needville soon, perhaps in early June. We have missed you too, Vlasta.

Members wish a quick recovery to our social member Sister Lydia Hortman. We're glad to have Sister Rosalie Pieper and Brother Walzel off the sick list. We missed the Charlie Matcek family and hope all are well in Wharton.

Director Hanus spoke of the workshop held recently at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. Due to the diligence and professionalism of officers managing affairs at the Supreme Lodge, there has been good growth in SPJST assets. Especially, the annuities are doing well.

There was no old business to cornplete. Under new business, the Scholarship Committee reported that almost two dozen Needville High School graduating seniors applied for Lodge No. 81 college scholarships. The two recipients will be named at the June Kitchen Chairman Mary Werner reported that she will be going to Sam's Wholesale in the near future to purchase items needed each week in the lodge kitchen.

Leaks in the roof of the hall were discussed. Brother Vincent Joe Newman volunteered to repair the leaks which are mostly around the several vent pipes.

Brother Hanus complimented us on the fact that the lodge's United States flag is always correctly displayed in our hall.

There will be no social games at the lodge on the evening of June 17, 1992 because that date coincides with the State Convention. The regular June meeting will be held on Father's Day, June 21st beginning at 12:00 noon.

The lodge will furnish fried and baked chicken and members are asked to please bring a vegetable dish and dessert.

Winners of cash door pirzes donated by the lodge were Alvin Palat, Cheryl Newman, Viola Jezek and Lynnette Newman. A special Mother's Day prize was awarded to Mary Werner, the oldest mother present. We thank Brother Hanus, the Adolph Machas and Frank Brdeckas for donating additional door prizes. These were won by Mary Werner, Winnie Susan, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Edna Woytek, Elsie Brdecka, Vincent Joe Newman, Darlene Blinka, Amanda Newman, Louise Newman, Alvin Blinka, Gilbert Walzel and Benita Walzel.

Congratulations to Sheryl Macha who received her Bachelor of Science degree Cum Laude from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville on May 16, 1992, with a double ...major in psychology and sociology. Proud parents and grandmother attending the services were Delores and Adolph Macha and Selma Bednarek. Best wishes for your future, Sheryl.

Congratulations to member Kevin Kusy on completing his work with honors at Wharton County Junior College.

The young members of Lodge No. 81 have been busy with both school and community activities this spring.

Lodge No. 81 member Joann Fabrygel was chairperson of a group of parents who helped her organize the "Czech Mates." This group of boys and girls, ages five to fifteen years, dressed in Czech costumes, performed a Maypole dance at the opening of the Fort Bend County Czech Fest in Rosenberg on May 1st. The evening before they danced at a private testimonial dinner honoring Judge Jodie Stavinoha, retired Czech Fest chairman. Lodge No. 81 members of the Czech Mates are Lynnette and Amanda Newman. Also dancing with the group are Jennifer and Michelle Zapalec, granddaughters of the Fabrygels.

The last weekend of April is devoted to the school's Youth Fair. Twirlers Melissa Vallet, Lynnette and Amanda Newman participated in one of the programs. Lynnette was a feature twirler. Amanda will be a Needville Middle School twirler in 1992-93.

On May 7, the Needville Parent Teacher Association held its annual banquet honoring students for their literary and scholastic achievements of the school year. Recognized for their participation were the following Lodge No. 81 students: Bradley Vallet, Corey Walzel, Lynnette, Amanda and Cheryl Newman. The group took part in competition such as speed reading, number sense, ready writing, band, theater guild. Cheryl Newman was listed in the top ten percent of the eighth grade.

Congratulations, Cheryl.

We are also proud of our student members from the Rosenberg area, who are regularly listed on the Honor Rolls. They are Clinton and Kristy Jablonski, Aron and Brandon Blinka.

It wouldn't be spring without baseball. Enjoying that spot with the Little Leagues are Derek and Audie Wright, Jr., Jason Vallet, Kristy and Clinton Jablonski.

Jason and Bradley Vallet are also active in 4-H and FFA. Jason recently placed second with his heifer in the Progress Show and weigh-in. That sounds like you'll be entering a winner, Jason, in the next fair. Forgive me if, in writing about our young members, I have omitted any names or activities.

Now it is time to circle June 21, 1992 on your calendar so you won't miss our next meeting. We will begin with dinner at 12:00 noon followed by the business meeting at 1:00 p.m.

Dear Members: In the absence of our President Betty Olson, Vice President Cheri Petr conducted the monthly meeting last Monday.

A moment of silence was observed for our departed member, Sister Bessie Houpy. The membership extends sympathy to the family. May she rest in peace.

The following committees gave reports -- Entertainment by Sister Cheri Petr who also reported on the entertainment meeting held last Monday; House Committee by Adolph Salac who thanked Brother Emil Petr for moving the lawn; the Living Memorial Committee by Sister Martha Frnka; FAC Faye Rejcek reported the lodge dues are still coming in.

The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council met last Tuesday and enjoyed a guest speaker on Support Victims of Crime.

The next meeting is June 8 at the Czech Club, which is also the picnic.

Lodge members are responsible for desserts, so if you plan to go, bring pastry - that's at 7:00 p.m.

Sister Salac reported on the Special Committee.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the teens and youth were meeting tonight, also practicing the Beseda which they will dance at the Garland World Bazaar Saturday, May 23. I might add the Czech Concert Orchestra plays at the bazaar from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m., also the youth worked the kitchen during last Saturday dance.

Sister Bessie reported also on the Czech Culture Society meeting to be June 29 at the Czech Club.

The next lodge monthly meeting is June 7 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a social.

Mark your calendar June 6, the Czech Harvesters play; and June 20, a country-western band, "Double Shot" so shine those boots and put the western clothes on for this one.

The June lodge meeting will be held on June 7th. Meeting time for youth, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.; adult, 4:00 p.m. Everyone, please take note that our meeting was, again, changed to the first Sunday because the delegates will be leaving for the convention on the second Sunday.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Pruski. FAC Trey Bielefeld led the pledge.

Jill Suggs, our former youth leader, had back surgery and is slowly recuperating. Julia Vaclavik, a long time member, was to undergo surgery on Monday, May 4th.

Minutes were read and approved as read.

Youth Leader reported eleven members, three guests and five adults present. Assistant Youth Leader Cheryl Morrissey is planning some activities for the future.

FAC Bielefeld gave a report of the fraternal activities he had reported.

Again, all the members need to keep records of acts performed because they are the records our FAC needs to coordinate our lodge's activities at the end of the year. Every donation, act of charity, or visit is important, so jot it down and report it to our FAC. The District VII fall meeting had another category or contest and it is adult needlework.

Other activities planned were read. A motion by Liz Bielefeld was that we add a "split the pot" item to our meeting, which was seconded by Wendy Pruski. Motion carried. Maxine Pavliska won the first "split the pot."

A discussion was held on what food we wanted to serve at YAD on June 28th.

A discussion followed that we sponsor a dinner-dance on August 29th. A steak dinner will be served and a dance will follow. This was put into a motion by Billy Pavliska, seconded by Wendy Pruski. Motion carried.

Anton Svoboda asked for permission to plant a crepe myrtle shrub on the northwest corner of the hall. All were in favor of it.

Lodge 155 Plans Annual Picnic Austin

Another annual SPJST cool picnic promises to be a success. Entertainment is there for everyone, so bring your family, young and old, and enjoy a fun relaxing afternoon Saturday, June 6 from 3:00 p.m. until dark. The cool breeze under the sprawling trees over the picnic area near the beautiful lake is ever-present.

You are invited to swim in the clear water of Deer Creek Ranch Lake and sun bathe on the floating dock. Fishing is available, conventional or fly-fishing near weeping willow trees. There is a large merry-go-round for children and teenagers, as well as a slide. Members plus guests bring your dominoes or cards, a table if you have one, and chairs. We need chairs!

There is a volleyball court, with Doris Boriski on the team and instructing the players.

The host and hostess Clarence and Doris Boriski will barbecue hot dogs on the grill and provide the trimmings, utensils, napkins, plates and plastics.

They will also provide plenty of cold lemonade. Members and guests are requested to bring sweets, pickles, melon or pineapple chunks. Bring your own drinks other than lemonade if desired.

Directions to drive there are as follows: Get on Highway 71 West. Watch for Hamilton Pool road (FM 3238), turn left at the sign and go 6 miles and across 2 bridges; as you cross the second bridge, turn left. This will be Longhorn Skyway. Stay on it until you reach deadend (about one mile), then take right turn which will lead you to the shady picnic area of Deer Creek Ranch Lake subdivsion. There will be signs along the way. Please call the Boriskis if you need clearer instructions at 264-2273 (Austin directory).

Doris plays volleyball regularly on the South Austin Recreation Center Team, and the Dripping Springs Volleyball Team. She has served on the arks and Lakes of Deer Creek Ranch Board since its beginning in 1982.

Doris also is a sharp domino player and she bowls regularly. She is our local lodge social coordinator.

Clarence Boriski is president of Austin SPJST Lodge No. 155 and president of the Austin Board of Senior Citizens Bowling Association. His artistic abilities include the growing of beautiful flowers in hanging baskets, and gardening. He also plays dominoes regularly and very well.

Thank you Doris and Clarence for hosting this annual beautiful picnic.

Lodge No. 177, Academy The Academy SPJST Lodge 177 regular monthly meeting was called to order May 13, 1992 by President Otis Beck.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members and they remained standing in a moment of silent prayer for the loss of our member Weldon (Rusty) Bland.

All officers were present. The minutes of the last meeting were read

by Secretary Kathy Fritz and were approved as read. All reports were given and approved.

Libby Bartek reported sympathy cards were sent to Raymond Mot!, and

Mrs. Weldon Bland and family. A get well card was mailed to Dorothy Massey.

New members for the month were Windy Beck; David, Marc and Marci Turner and Tia A. Bland. We also had two transfers to our lodge. They were Dorothy and Robert Speakman.

A thank you letter was received from Lou Walden from the Belton Senior Center thanking our lodge for the $250.00 donation for the Meals-onWheels program.

FAC J. C. Johnson reviewed activities coming up and also recognized members having birthdays this month.

They were Kathy Fritz and Polly Childers. Wishing you both a happy birthday. J. C. urged all members to be at our next meeting and to bring someone with you, because he has something special to discuss.

The SPJST Lodge No. 180 meeting was held on May 7, 1992 with a nice crowd present. Roll call showed most officers, were present. Also two visitors, Lenie Shaw and Raymond Simmank, were present.

Secretary arbara Hartgraves read the minutes of our last meeting and the minutes were approved as read.

After the business meeting, the door prizes were won by Ernest Dueser and Louis Grochoske.

The meeting was interruped by Zack Hartgraves falling and injurying his ankle. Zack was rushed to the hospital for X-rays. Zack was put on crutches, but I hear that he only used them for four days and then he was wearing a walking cast. Hope he is much better; also Barbara Hartgraves, Zack 's mother, had an injury to her shoulder was wearing it in a sling. Hope Barbara is feeling better.

Joe Hurtik, Sr. had been under the weather for some time. I am glad to report that he is feeling better.

After the meeting adjourned, a delicious barbecue dinner was enjoyed by all Remember our country-western dances every Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Members and guests of Hill Country Lodge No. 185 met at the Bavarian Village March 19, 1992 for a regular meeting. President "'oy Haag called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. Roll call of officers showed Secretary Susan Bohnenberger absent.

Treasurer Ernest Jasek reported on lodge funds. President Haag reported receiving the official papers for delegate, Dwight Doeppenschmidt, for the 1992 SPJST Convention.

Lodge 185 members welcomed Arvin and Mary Brehm to the lodge. They were initiated at this meeting.

Brother Brehm reported that he had some stands for our flags. Robert Popp will get the poles.

It was reported that Susan Bohenberger was interested in running for District VII DYC. She previously held that position in District IV. Election will be at the District VII spring meeting to be held in New Braunfels April 5, 1992.

Visitors Frank and Mona Vermillion of Pasadena Lodge No. 172 were introduced by President Roy Haag.

There is a possibility that the Vermillions may transfer to Lodge No. 185.

Jarolyn Popp was also a guest at the meeting.

Youth Leader Theresa Haag reported she now has two assistant youth leaders, Arvin Brehm and Chris Haag.

Currently there are 21 youth members in Lodge No. 185, with the possibility of another signing up soon.

The District VII spring meeting, to be held at the Bavarian Village, will begin at 12:00 noon. Boy Scout members of the youth club will perform the presentation of colors. Youth members will also have a booth to sell tickets for their fund-raising project.

Under other youth club business, members will receive T-shirts to wear on the first day of camp. April 9th will be the youth club Easter egg hunt at Landa Park. Activities begin at 5:00 p.m. with a hot dog cookout, egg hunt and other festivities. Adult members of Lodge No. 185 were invited to attend.

Youth members are requested to bring an item for the Easter baskets which are to be delivered to people confined to rest homes.

Betty Doeppenschrnidt was the recipient of the attendance prize.

Eddy On April 5, 1992 the new Lodge No. 200 was chartered. President Bob Miracle opened the meeting at 4:00 p.m.

The colors were presented by Mark and Keith Gatewood and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by ob Miracle.

The national anthem was sung by Helen Hegwood, District V field representative of Lodge No. 88, Houston.

The chartering program began with the presentation of Lodge No. 200 banner by District II Director Willie E. Kohutek to Lodge No. 200 SecretaryTreasurer Sandra Gatewood.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar had a very informative talk about the SPJST and fraternalism.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Bernard Gebala then had a short informative presentation.

The invocation was given by Earl Soudelier, reporter for Lodge No. 200.

A barbecue meal was then served at the conclusion with compliments of Lodge No. 200.

We, the members of Lodge No. 200, would like to thank all the people and lodges for the presentation of gifts to our lodge. It is people like these who will assure our success. We are sure the next few months will be the most critical, but with the help of good friends, we will make it. We would like to thank the Bruceville-Eddy High School for the use of their school cafeteria for the ceremony.

On May 3, 1992 Lodge No. 200 held its regular meeting at 4:30 p.m. at Eddy City Hall. There was no old business, except for the discussion about the presentation of our charter.

Under new business the next meeting night will be changed to Wednesday, June 3, 1992 at 6:30 p.m. at Eddy City Hall.

I was highly incensed at the recent editorial in the May 13th issue of the Vestnik (our Herald).

These two editors, and I use the plural tense, asked the question, we want to know, "Is it that way?"

Well, I have an anwer for both of them; yes, it is!

The editor and his wife have, out of context, failed to report to you that they have cashed their bonus checks for the year they have questioned; both of them received and banked their bonuses.

After speaking on the phone, at my expense, I deliberated awhile and finally decided to write this letter.

Our Society (SPJST), with 55,000 plus members, has made money over the last 4 years.

Other insurance companies all over the State of Texas and the United States have gone belly up.

I feel the next convention in Victoria, Texas needs to allow the Publication Committee of the SPJST the right of pre-approval of any editorials submitted by our new editor or old editors for the reasoning, that cheap pot shots at the Supreme Lodge home office are not now, nor ever will be allowed, tolerated or published in our internal organ.

We have the ever-present threat of IRS taxation, skulking like a ghost, over our heads.

But yet, here we are allowing PAID and BONUSED employees to suggest improprieties by publishing something that, in effect, is done to reward good, honest and faithful service to our Society.

By the way, my understanding is our LEGAL ADVISOR also gave his consent, in a profit-making year. He ought to know.

A copy of this letter has already been submitted to Brother Melvin Skrabanek of the Publication Committee.

I feel the SPJST does not need internal strife to mess around with something that works and is good.

My father's father used to say to me as a toddler, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The Easter party, egg hunt and supper turned out fine. Winners in ages 04 were: 1st-Justine Orler, 2nd-Traci Dobecka, 3rd-Jacob Orler. In ages 5-8 were: 1st-Joshua Orler, 2nd-Jared Orler, 3rd-Bradley Kroll. In age 9-12

Talton Youth Participate in April and May Activities Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club hei their April meeting and Easter egg hunt at the home of Mrs. Georgia Dorotik. The members drew Eastei pictures that were judged at the meeting. The members enjoyed an Easter egg hunt after our meeting and then had refreshments.

We held our May meeting on May 2nd. Members made Mother's Day cards that were distributed to the mothers at Garden Villa Nursing Home.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 138 of Ganado, Texas on behalf of the membership extend our sincere sympathy to the family of JOE HAFERNICK, JR., who passed away on March 13, 1992 in a Victoria hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. on March 16, with Rev. Bernard Ritchea of Palacios officiating.

Burial followed in the Ganado Cemetery under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home. Graveside services were conducted under the auspices of the American Legion Post 346 of Ganado and Masonic Lodge No. 1055 AF&AM of Ganado.

Pallbearers were Burr Stafford, Dick Ottis, Robby Boepple, Bob Hultquist, Jerry Bassham and Raymond Young.

Survivors include his wife, Leola Hafernick of Ganado; 8 grandchildren; also two sisters, Anna Feist of Houston and Olga Ochterbeck of Missouri City.

Brother Hafernick was a veteran of U.S. Army in World War II, served in the European Theatre. He was a retired rice farmer.

Sister Annie and her husband Emil were active and productive workers with the lodge since November 1953 serving as secretary of the lodge for many years and took an active part in all lodge activities. She was also an active RVOS Lodge 109 member and a devoted member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

Brother Kusy was the son of Edward and Bessie (Socha) Kusy Kubos, and was born on July 30, 1925 in Moravia.

He married Evelyn Besetzny on February 21, 1950 at St. John.

A farmer and truck driver, he was a member of the Catholic Church. He was a disabled veteran, having served in World War II. Pallbearers were John Pelzel, Alvin Berger, Andrew Besetzny and Kevin Kusy, nephews; Jerry Odstrcil, friend; and Chad Kusy, grandson.

Survivors include his mother, Bessie Kubos; wife, Evelyn Kusy; three daughters, Linda Coby of Pasadena, Kathy Barta of Schulenburg and Donna Marmatakis of Dallas; three sons, Edward J. Kusy, Michael Kusy and James Kusy, all of St. John; three sisters, Marcella Pelzel of Rosebud, Sydonia Swain of New Orleans, Louisiana and Jerrilyn Patek of Houston; two brothers, Valentine Kusy of Needville and Oscar Kusy of St. John; eleven grandchildren and one , greatgrandchild.

His father and a son, Steven Kusy preceded him in death.

Mr. Berrier was born in Maypearl, Texas to Henry William and Emma V.

Cook Berrier. He had lived in Temple most of his life and married Frances Marie Wheeler on November 20, 1963 in Little River.

He owned and operated Berrier--McDray Grocery in Belton, and worked for the Texas Rockwool plant in Belton for 28 years. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Heights Baptist Church in Temple.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Belton with the Reverend Joe Baisden officiating. Burial followed in North Belton Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Frances Marie Berrier of Lake Belton; a brother, Harrel Berrier of Marion; and two sisters, Etta Underwood of Waxahachie and Jewel Cole of Waco.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87 in Temple, Texas.

Sister Zgabay was born December 6, 1896 in the Frenstat community of Burleson County. She was the daughter of Frank and Johanna Popek Barton. She was married to Raymond Zgabay in 1915. He preceded her in death in 1969.

She was a lifelong resident of Burleson County, and a member of St. Joseph's Church in Dime Box. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and loved being outdoors.

Brother Benton was born August 24, 1908 in Emhouse, the son of Elijah and Daisy Carroll Benton. He was reared in Emhouse where he attended school. After school he helped on the family farm in Emhouse before moving to Alma where he had been engaged in farming.

On August 24, 1931 he was married to Nadine Treadaway of Alma. After their marriage they lived in Alma. In 1942 he became the owner of Benton's Grocery in Alma for 45 years.

He was a member of the Emhouse Methodist Church, IOOF Lodge in Ennis, Sokol, and the SPJST Lodge No. 25.

Mrs. Benton preceded him in death in April 20, 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Benton of Mansfield and Jim and his wife, Elayna Benton of Alma; a daughter, Mrs. Bob (Beverly) Bradley of Fort Worth; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, LeBess Spruill of Emhouse.

Wednesday, May 27, 1992—VESTMIK/15 selves, made the trip with us. "t the bottom of the mountain is the lovely Ski Lodge laztoka, where we had the best meal in Czechoslovakia. This cozy mountain hotel and restaurant was managed by a young Greek, who spoke perfect Czech. (Well, he was born in Czechoslovakia from the Greek parents, who like many thousands of Greeks escaped from Greece to the neighboring countries where their country was ravaged by a Civil war after WWII. -- Some of these Greeks never returned to their homeland.) -- Hotel and restaurant R6ztoka used to be owned by the parents of my good friend Robert, who was born like his brother in Chicago, USA. His parents with their boys returned permanently to the Old country in the early Thirties; their mountain lodge was stolen by the Communists after they seized power in 1948. -- Instead of waiting an hour for a bus at the end of the line bus stop close to Raztoka lodge, we walked for less than an hour alongside the road, downhill on the light decline to Frennk's bus station where we caught a bus to Ronov located on the other side of Radhost mountain range. RoYnov's bus terminal was like a beehive with busses coming and going, people rushing in every direction and - heavens behold no signs anywhere to tell what platform to take for a bus to one's destination. After I asked several people for help in vain, we decided to go back to Prerov by rail. We traveled thus directly west to ValaKske Meziffa, where we changed train, going now northwest to Hranice, where we had to change the train again to get to my hometown southwest from there.

At this point I would like to add the following: The Radhosg r Massif is centrally situated in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Range which covers practically all of the northeastern Moravia.

This territory is thus the ancestral home to most of the Czech Texans.

The memorable Radho''ssr Range in the center of this region has reasonable dimensions, because it can be comfortably reached as a one-day excursion from Roniov, Fren'6tat or Frydlant nad Ostravici (Frydlant over Ostravice River). On clear days one can see from Radholr summit (1,125 meters = 3,705 feet) or from the top of nearby Knn-lyne' (Duchess) (1,257 meters = 4,125 feet) the endless chain of the Rear-Guard Mountain Ranges, Vsetin Peaks, Hosty'n Hills, Javornfk Ridges, majestic peak Smrk (Pine tree (1,276 meters = 4,187 feet) and Lys hora (Bald peak) 1,324 meters = 4,345 feet), the second tallest peak in Moravia. On the exceptionally clear days one can see the Jesentic mountains in the Northwestern Moravia with Pradn (Grandpa), the highest peak in Moravia and the Tatra mountains in Slovakia. Unfortunately, we could not see any of it because of the mist and fog. I know though it is as described because I snow skied there and hiked on and around Radhovsr several times in my youth before I left the Old country after the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948.

After our return to Prerov my sisterin-law Liba had a delightful supper ready (lean pork, dumplings and Moravian sauerkraut; it looked and tasted so great that we could not refuse a second helping resulting then in the evening stroll through the old town and alongside BeCva river to lose some of those calories. Next day, Thursday 14th of July, we shopped for a few presents to take home to Houston with us and took in the afternoon the last long stroll all over the city. Next morning we said good-by to my

brother and his wife and took a bus to the railway station, where we boarded a fast train to Prague-Holegovice. The train ride lasted just over 4 hours.

There was just one taxicab at PrahaHole ovice railway station and the cabby right away informed me that he is not in service. As a matter of fact; he is rushing home to take his family to their summer cottage outside of Prague. All this conversation up to now was in Czech; his ears pricked up when he heard me talking to Edith in English and he was ready to take us to the Hotel Forum at once, for a stiffened up price of 70 crowns. In 1988 ten crowns were one dollar, so his price was $7.00! (When I took a taxi at the end of November '91 at Brno, the capital city of Moravia, and traveled by it almost across the whole city it cost me 60 crowns. At that time 30 crowns were one dollar, so it cost me $2.00!)

Prague's hotel Forum where we and the whole "Triple K" group stayed was the most modern - opened just 4 months ago, before our arrival. Located on the west side of the hundred spires city it is connected by a spiral staircase and walkway over the freeway to the new Palace of Culture. This huge building was reserved for meetings of the World Congress of the biochemists and their main convention was taking place on the same day when we arrived at hotel Forum next door. As many of the Congress delegates were accommodated at our hotel, the management decided to get into the gravy" by charging some unbelievable prices. Could you for instance imagine that a popular small size bottle of Coca-Cola cost $2.00?

Next morning Saturday, July 16th, we departed from Prague by Czech motor coach with a luggage trailer, music and song for Frankfurt, Germany, final destination before home.

We traveled through Plze6 (Pilsen) and crossed the border at Rozvadov, Czechoslovakia, with only a brief stop.

On the Waldhaus, Germany side, however, we were detained almost 30 minutes while I was translating several pages of a questionnaire granting permission for our driver and bus to travel in Germany for a fee. I was "delegated" to do it because the driver and the others from the group didn't speak German. I did not get a penny or some discount for my effort; I was rewarded by hearty applause of the fellow travelers in the bus, with some of them suggesting I myself should be a trip guide with my fluent knowledge of Czech, German and other languages including European history and geography. -- We then proceeded south to Regensburg (kezno) in Bavaria instead of traveling directly west to our scheduled overnight stop at hotel Rebstock in Wtirzburg in Greater Hesse. Even though this was an uncalled for change from our schedule, I for one looked forward to revisit this historic town on the Danube River, where I stayed for over a month in the camp for the Czech refugees in 1948. But alas, we traveled only to Regensburg's far out suburb, where we ate at the Czech operated restaurant at the large tennis courts and unloaded one of our fellow travelers, said to attend now a school for several weeks in Germany. Because of this detour, we arrived to Wiirzburg after dusk. Due to this late arrival we were probably the only couple who took off after supper to explore this pretty town. It was definitely worth it! The town was bustling with the foot traffic and singing, clapping and laughter was heard through the open windows of several taverns.

dral with 2 lesser churches set in the circle. A few blocks further the beautiful palace and grounds. The best of it all was a view down the street past our notel's door! This well lit street with houses, stores and tavern seemed to disappear just like in the fairy tale in the big hill which suddenly grew in front of us, with floodlighted majestic chateau on top of it. It looked like only a mile away!

Next morning (Sunday, July 17th 1989 - our last day in Europe) we traveled alongside Wiirzburg's hills covered by wineyards on their southern slopes towards the Autobahn E-41 which brought us to Frankfurt's Airport (Flughafen Rhein-Main) where we boarded Pan Am flight 73 and departed at 1:20 p.m. European time for JFK Airport in New York, arriving there at 3:35 p.m. local time. Our Pan Am flight 471 New York - Houston was to leave for Houston at 6:25 p.m. but a stormy weather delayed us at JFK Airfield for 2 hours changing thus our arrival on the home turf from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. -- Delay or no delay, rain or shine, our faithful friends Bernard and Lillian Pivol'Ika were waiting for us at Houston's Hobby Airfield with my car and the rest is history.

At the time my article "Quo vadis Yugoslavia? -- Reminiscences of the unforgettable trip to Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia" goes to print the situation in the lands of the Southern Slay s is stagnated as their political and ethnic problems continue to be unsolved. But the all out fighting stopped; let us hope and pray it is over! The officials of United Nations Organization think the same as it is evident from a short article which appeared Monday, March 9, 1992 in the Houston Chronicle as follows:

U.N. launches Yt gosl v peace operation BELGRADE, Yugoslavia --- Only hours after the deadliest violation of a 2-month-old cease-fire, senior U.N. peacekeepers arrived Sunday to launch an operation meant to end Yugoslavia's civil war.

Lt. Gen. Satish Nambiar told journalists at Belgrade airport that he and other senior officers for the 14,000troop deployment would not be deterred by the latest outbreak of violence.

"As of today, I don't see any problems. I am determined to succeed," Nambiar replied when asked if the renewed fighting could derail U.N. intervention.

What's In A Word?

By: W.J. "Bill" Malina Most of us, as members of the SPJST, refer to ourselves as being of "Czech ancestry," however, the word "Czech" does not appear in the name of our fraternity. The name of our fraternity is the "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texasu" (English: Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas). Many of us are actually of Moravian, rather than Czech or Bohemian, ancestry. Some of us are of Silesian, Slovak, or other Slavic ancestry, i.e. Polish, Slovene, Croatian, etc.

Through the years, the word "Slavic" and the phrase "Czech ancestry" have evolved into concepts which encompass broader meanings than the words were originally meant to express.

The early Slavic people referred to themselves as "Slovani," which was intended to describe their ability to communicate with each other by means of a common spoken language.

The modern Czech words "Slovan," "Slovak," "Slovanska," as well as "Slovani" are derived from the old Slavonic word "slovo," which meant "word," and which still has that same meaning in most Slavic languages used today. In modern English the Czech word "slovanska" is properly translated "Slavonic," however, the more common translation is "Slavic."

The word "Slavic" came into the English language from the Late Greek word "sklabos" and its Medieval Latin counterpart "sclavos." The Middle English version of "sklabos" and "sclavos" was "sclav," from which we get the modern English words "slave" and "Slav" or "Slavic." These Late Greek, Medieval Latin and Middle English words were used to describe a person who was held in servitude or was dominated by and subservient to someone or something.

Many people have the misconception that the first Slavic people were common slaves. It must be remembered that there were two different kinds of slaves (sklabos or sclavos) when the Slovani migrated into Greek and Roman territory. These two kinds of slaves can be differentiated by the terms "common slaves" and "free slaves." The common slave was considered chattel or property, to be used, sold, or traded as his owner wished, he was the property of his owner and had no privileges except those specifically granted to him by his master. The free slaves were free in all respects, but were not citizens of the empire or of the place where they lived. Free slaves usually settled on large estates, where they worked for the owner for little or no pay in exchange for protection and a place to live. The free slaves were not the property of the land owner or anyone else, they were free to come and go as they wished and free to move off of the estate whenever they wanted to. The free slave was more like a modern live-in servant.

When the Slovani migrated into Greek territory they probably settled on and around large estates and assumed the role of free slaves, and eventually became known as sklabos, from which we got the English words: "Slay s,"' "Slavic" and "Slavonic." The Czech word "slovanska" (Slavic) and the English words "Slovak" and "Slovene" have their root in the old Slavic word "slovo."

There is theory that the word "Slavic" came from the old Slavonic word "slava," which meant feast, festival, celebration or party. Although this is possible, it is highly im-

16/VESTNiK—Wednesday, May 27, 1992 probable, especially since this derivation is not supported by the etymology of the word "Slavic" in modern dictionaries. There is ample historical evidence that the early Slavic people liked to hold elaborate celebrations, however, their celebrations usually followed a successful venture such as a good harvest, a bountiful hunt, etc.

The early Serbians were well known for their "slavas" or "slavy" (celebrations).

When the Slovani migrated into Central Europe they were loosely organized into patriarchal tribes. Many of the tribes settled in the part of Central Europe which was known to the Roman Empire and Eastern Europe as "Bohemium" (Bohemia). The largest and strongest tribe was led by the legendary Praotec Cech, from whom they got the name of "Cechovi" (Cesi" in modern Czech). They called their new home "Cechy" in honor of their leader, but the Latin-Anglo-Germanic world continued to call that area Bohemium or Bohemia. Eventually all of the tribes in Bohemia came under the rule of the leaders of the Cechovi tribe.

After the collapse of the Great Moravian Empire, the Maygars drove a wedge between the people of what is now Slovakia and Slovenia, thereby separating the Slavic people in that area. Slovakia came under Maygar or Hungarian rule, under which it remained until the formation of Czechoslovakia after World War I. The Moravians and Silesians, along with the Cechovi, came under Germanic influence. After the formation of Czechoslovakia, and as a result of German and Communist rule during and after World War II, the Moravians and Silesians, and Slovaks to some degree, began to loose their respective ethnic identities. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and unto this present day the Slovaks and Moravians, and to some degree the Silesians, are trying to revive their unique ethnic identities.

Many of the Czechs who live in Texas are technically of Moravian ancestry. Before the end of World War II it was not uncommon for the Texas Czechs to refer to themselves as Moravians (Moravci) or Bohemians (Cesi). Many of today's Texas Czechs do not like to use the word "Bohemian," however, it must be remembered that it is still a proper English word used to describe the people whose ancestors came from Bohemia ("Cechy" in the Czech language), or from the Bohemian part of Czechoslovakia. When Czechoslovakia regained its independence after World War II, and during the early years of its Communist domination, the term "Czech" gradually replaced both of the terms: "Moravian" and "Bohemian." In today's usage "Czech" is a broader and more inclusive term because it usually includes those who are of Moravian or Silesian ancestry.

The differences in the words and terms noted above may seem trivial or insignificant, but to anyone who is interested in Czech history, culture or heritage it is important that he or she be aware of how the Czechs, including Moravians, Silesians and Slovaks, evolved into a Czech ethnic identity and how they fit into the whole complex picture of Slavic development. A knowledge or at least a familiarity with these words and terms can be helpful in clearing up some of the questions and misconceptions that invariably arise in research of family histories or the study of Czech culture, heritage and history.

Annual Membership Meeting CESAT

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) held the annual membership meeting at the SPJST Lodge No. 29 Hall in Taylor, Texas on Saturday, April 4, 1992.

This organization has a history at the University of Texas (Austin) dating back to 1909 when the Cechie Club was formed by several students of Czech descent to study, perpetuate and promote the Czech language and culture in Texas. Through the efforts of this club, Czech was put on the curriculum at the University of Texas in 1915. Although there was an interruption in the teaching of Czech during the years 1923-27, Czech language courses were re-established by the Cechie Club and have been taught successfully at U.T. - Austin ever since.

In a reorganization of the Cechie Club in 1939 the name was changed to Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas or CESAT which continues in the tradition of the original Cechie Club to perpetuate and promote the Czech language and Czech culture.

CESAT strives to arrange for Czech language courses wherever possible and helps to coordinate financial support from Czech-American organizations for Czech teaching in Texas.

Through its suborganization The Texas Council of Higher Education, CESAT makes scholarships and grants available for university study in Texas and/or in summer courses in Czechoslovakia. Contrary to the belief that CESAT is an organization of College ex-students of Czech only, this association accepts membership of anyone interested in Czech heritage and the preservation of the Czech language in Texas.

At this meeting the members of CESAT voted to contribute $10,000 to help the Czech Education Foundation of Texas (CEFT) reach its goal of $1,000,000 for the establishment of a Czech chair of studies at the University of Texas - Austin. This money makes a total of $22,000 donated by CESAT to CEFT which is now close to meeting its $1,000,000 goal. Mr. Roger Kolar, chairman of CEFT made an appeal to CESAT members and all Czech-Americans to raise the balance of funds before the deadline of October 1993.

Plans were discussed for the establishment of a summer camp for the study of the Czech language, culture and folklore, including plays, films. etc. Mr. Woody Smith will pursue the possibility of setting up such a camp this summer, using existing camp facilities in Texas.

In the last several years CESAT made available stipends for study in the summer language program offered by the Czechoslovak Foreign Institute in Prague. In October this year Dr. Erik Sefcik, curator of the Silesian Museum in Opava, CSFR will bring to Texas a collection of historic photographs showing scenes in various villages of Moravia and Silesia. Dr. Clinton Machann, professor at Texas A&M will arrange for an exhibition of these photographs and also a lecture by Dr. Sefcik to be announced later. About 150 are to remain in Texas at a location to be selected later.

Amendments to the By-laws of the CESAT Constitution were passed to

incorporate into the by-laws the Maresh and Micek scholarship bequests which are the main source of scholarship funds of the Texas Council of Higher Education.

Dr. Svatova Jakobson, retired UT Czech language professor has deeded her extensive library of Czech books

and literature to the University of Texas and Mr. Kevin Hannan, UT graduate student has been designated to catalog all this material and arrange for proper storage of same.

Golden Anniversary Celebrants Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Sulak of West, Texas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, April 11, 1992 with a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, Texas with Rev. John T. Molnar as celebrant.

A reception followed at the Lone Star Hall in West, Texas.

The reception was hosted by the couple's children and spouses, namely, Sandy and Larry Schroeder of Arlington, Texas; Jeanette and Ronald Janek of Italy, Texas; Major Dale and

McLennan-Hill County Chapter Of The Czech Heritage Society Despite the many on-going functions, a wonderful group of 52 people were present for the meeting which was called to order by President Raymond Marek.

Vice President Alden Smith was called upon to lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Since Secretary Kenneth Kubala was absent, the minutes of the last meeting were read by the president and were approved.

Copies of the by-laws drafted by our chapter were passed out by Director Eugene Horak, these were to be read and reviewed if any changes or additions were needed; these will be discussed at a later date.

A current report of the treasury was given by Willa Mae Cervenka.

Since Director Mary Dvoracek was absent due to another commitment, Henrietta Cervenka spoke about the chapter book. There is no deadline for submitting stories, recipes, old sayings, fables. We need more articles to make this an interesting book so we can pass it down to our children or grandchildren.

Ernest Jaska brought a large display of pictures of the area dance bands he has been researching, in the display was an article on how one of the bands got paid and it was not in money. Another interesting picture was of a band lined up in front of the gazebo that West had in the early days, a very

A report of the State Czech Heritage Society, which met in Deanville on April 11, was given by Reporter Nancy Polansky.

Vice President Alden Smith informed everyone of the confirmed date of September 30 when the Primate Archbishop of Brno, Czechoslovakia will be in the West-Abbott area, it will be a dual project of both towns honoring him with a reception. A committee composed of Raymond Marek, Eugene Horak, Kenneth Kubala, Henrietta Cervenka, Mary Dvoracek and Nancy Polansky, was appointed by Alden Smith.

Alden Smith hosted the Junior Soccer Team from Brno, Czechoslovakia who was in Dallas playing for the Dallas Cup for the ages 16 and under. This was a wonderful event for the Czech people here and abroad, being they won the cup. Alden also spoke of the experience he had during his stay in Brno during the week of March 12th lecturing in a beer hall.

He called on Maggie Grmela, the director of the West Folk Dancers, who expressed her participation to help West acquire a student exchange program, where a student from Czechoslovakia could attend schools here at MCC. Since West is a Czech community, we should raise funds for this project since there are exchange students at Baylor University and Hill Junior College.

The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the earka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, d', t', g.

To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the haeek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s- g , - Z---1, r—f As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, ch, k and r.
