Editor COMMENTS

This issue contains additional recommendations for changes in our bylaws sent in to the By-Law Committee and forwarded by their secretary to us for publication. The recommended changes and the reasons for making the changes are printed for your study and consideration. The By-Law Committee meet and discuss, accept or reject these changes and will forward their recommendations to be printed in the Vestnik in the near future.

Remember that you can discuss any rejected change on the convention floor provided you were the one who submitted the recommendation.

Changes in by-laws must have been recommended to the By-Law Committee by April 15, 1992 in order to be discussed. *** Greed and lust for power are two traits all of us human beings possess, some more and some less. Power and greed have been the downfall of human beings, organizations, places of business (small and large), corporations and, yes, even countries.

The question may arise of why this as a subject for an editorial and the answer is simple: it is a part of our everyday life. Every individual possessing a normal and sound mind has the ability to decide what is morally right or morally wrong, what is financially right or financially wrong, what is fair and what is unfair, etc.

Too many of us have the ability to make the decisions mentioned above, however, too few of us give much effort to apply those decisions to ourselves; we feel that those decisions apply to others more than to ourselves.

If we stop to think about what has happened (because of human greed) to our savings and loans institutions and banks, much of it based on human greed and desire for POWER, then we realize how devastating this can become nationwide, however, we can also see how many lives of greedy individuals have ended up in prison terms for people of these institutions and investors on Wall Street.

Another case of the above hurting our whole social structure is the case of our three large automobile manufacturing corporations where quality was overlooked and quantity became the goal and, thereby, allowing competition from overseas to overwhelm our own industries at home. This does not apply only to the manufacture of automobiles but includes manufacturing industries.

There is no reason why our products cannot be as good or better than those manufactured abroad. This all can be traced, to a great extent, to greed so that more profit could be made by low quality production and the use of inferior parts. Everything was fine as long as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was paid well in millions for producing a great amount of inferior products.

It takes an individual with a strong moral human attitude to decide which is more important: the satisfaction of acquiring great wealth and power for themselves or doing with less wealth and power and doing more good with the balance of it for the good of the public.

The startling fact was revealed a few

days ago that one-fifth of the population on earth owns four-fifths of the wealth on earth! We can see where this places the remaining four-fifths of the population in the standard of living compare to the one-fifth in their standard of living.

Your editor watches some programs, now and then, which air later at night and are rather educational and revealing because it pertains to the financial situations in some of the progressive countries. One revealing program, recently, aired how slow we in the United States were in re-acting to the common sense approach of business of the Japanese where government labor and management all combined to make their products more acceptable by the public; now it seems that we are beginning to learn that cooperation of all three groups work much better than competing among themselves for power.

Some recent programs have shown that the most progressive organizations and/or companies progressed the best if the salaries of the management and working force were adjusted by the profits made by that organization or company and all indicated that in this manner of repaying everybody in the organization proved to be very satisfactory and everyone worked together as a team, knowing in the long run all would benefit. This system seems to be just about as morally and financially sound as can be devised by any group wishing to progress together.

After thinking this over, very carefully, this writer feels that this type of system applies almost directly to our SPJST Society for by increasing our insurance sales, investing our reserves soundly, giving our districts, lodges and membership all the possible benefits we can, would only help to make a sound organization, if by having a sound organization, we progress forward, thus becoming more financially sound, our officers' and employees' salaries could be adjusted without hurting our financial status. This all can work if our organization pulls together with one goal in mind: that being the good of the SPJST Society.

However, the above will not work if some of us decide to live by the first 5 words of this part of this editorial: "Greed and lust for power!" If some of us decide that we will place ourselves first above the good of the organization and line our pockets while we can or decide that we want to built a POWER structure for our own benefit within the Society, then we might as well forget the word fraternalist as far as it applies to ourselves. It is only human nature to feel that what we are doing is good for the organization even though, deep without our own conscience, we know that this is not exactly so; this seems to be where our "ego" takes over as first place. *** The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) recently received a $25,000 donation from the Arnold J. and Irene B. Kocurek Family Foundation, which was gratefully appreci-

ated by the CEFT. The letter pertaining to this donation was published in the April 15, 1992 Vestnik edition.

By the way the CEFT Foundation still needs approximately $45,000 in donations to reach their goal of one million dollars.

If you are anticipating to make a charitable (tax deductible) contribution, now is the time to do so. The CEFT welcomes any and all, large or small donations!

Remember October 1993 is the deadline for the CEFT's one million goal. LET US GO FOR IT!!!

From SPJST By-Law Committee April 16, 1992 Dear Mr. Sefcik: Enclosed find recommended changes to the By-laws for publication in the Vestnik, complying with Article 20 (e), By-laws of the SPJST. Thank you!

This will prevent individuals from bringing friends and family to vote for them for delegate, local officer and trustees. (EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY) Page 24 Article 33 (a) 5. XI. Eliminate: No local dues will be collected.

ADD:.50 cents per month per member over 16 years of age will be added to the member's policy for fraternal and social activities and will be forwarded to the local lodges at the same time as the yearly premium refund is made.

NOTE: If member pays quarterly (1/4), semi-annually (1/2) or annually at the .50 cents per month for number of months paid; if paidup policy, bill one a year.

Eliminate: All references to local lodges setting local dues or assessments.

If Supreme Lodge collects fraternal and social dues for all lodges at the same time as collecting insurance premiums, the local lodges would have nothing against direct billing.

By-Law Recommendations

If all lodges have same fraternal and social dues it should be no problem on direct billing.

March 27, 1992 Eliminate: All references to local lodge collecting premiums.

Article 33 (b) 5.

Present: "The President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Financial Secretary devote all of their time and efforts to the service of the Supreme Lodge."

Proposed: "The President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Legal Advisor devote all of their time and efforts to the service of the Supreme Lodge."

Explanation: As per the By-laws of the SPJST, the Legal Advisor is an officer of the Supreme Lodge. The position of Legal Advisor should meet the same obligations as those required of the other four Lodge officers.

We have progressed into a time when the full focus of the Legal Advisor is required. Many changes have, and are still occurring in the life insurance industry. We must stay on top of every rising situation that may affect our Society. The position of Legal Advisor is designed to be the watchdog.

Sadly, we have become a nation of "Sue-Happy" citizens. Juries are awarding record-breaking judgements on suits that have no legal grounds. We must make sure that our Society's interests are protected. By amending this by-law, we can insure that we are receiving the most protection that is available.

Article 95:

Page 14, ADD: New paragraph before Article 12 (i) -Each candidate for Supreme Lodge officers will be allowed 5 minutes to address the convention delegates before the election of officers. Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84 By-Law Recommendations April 1, 1992 ARTICLE 19 (b) CHANGE TO READ: Legal Advisor should be available only for legal opinions, with documentation.

ARTICLE 27 (d): Delete paragraph

Present: "The contents of the `Vestnik' are managed by the editor, elected by the Convention, who must be an SPJST member, possessed journalistic qualifications, have knowledge of the Czech and English languages, be able to produce a Czech and English section in the Vestnik, and have a general education."

Proposed: "The contents of the `Vestnik' are managed by an editor, elected by the Convention. The editor must be an SPJST member, possess journalistic qualifications, have knowledge of the Czech and English languages, be able to produce a Czech and English section in the Vestnik, and have a general education. The editor devotes all of his/her time and efforts to the service of the Vestnik.

Explanation:We have for our use, a tool that reaches well across the state, country, and world. The Vestnik, like all things must be constantly adapting to the world around it.

The Vestnik is unique in that it is subscribed to by a "special" group of people, a group of people who have evolved over the years. The position of editor requires much time and devotion.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Vestnik be printed and mailed twice a month to cut costs.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Editor be appointed by the Supreme Lodge, with a member of the Publication Committee be present, and that the Editor be housed at the Supreme Lodge office.

It would give the Editor a closer working relationship with the Home Office.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Legal Advisor be a full time position officer OR hold only one office position in one Organization or Society, besides his own Practice, and be housed at the Supreme Lodge office.

Reason: With the changing times, a Society such as SPJST, there is need for legal advise at all times.

RECOMMENDATION: That all lodges be on direct billing by Jan. 1, 1993.

RECOMMENDATION: That all membership dues be collected by the Supreme Lodge of fifty cents (.50) per month from every member age sixteen (16) and older.

Page 5 Article 1 (i): The word "ACTIVE" shall mean a member who is still paying premiums, dues and assessments, if any; ADD: and attend 1/2 (50%) of the local lodge meetings on a regular basis. (See "Full Benefit Member" for further clarification.)

Lodge 32 - Victoria is recomn:ending the following changes to the SPJST Bylaws: 1. That the President of the Society preside at all meetings. (Article 43)

This will give new blood and new insight for the organization. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. (Article 42) 3. The Directors and Home Office employees paid by the Society cannot receive commissions or financial gains for selling insurance, because they make policy decisions for the Society and should not benefit personally for that decision. Lodge 160, San Angelo April 3, 1992 Lodge 160 of San Angelo, District 4, wishes to propose the following by-law changes for consideration at the 1992 SPJST Convention. The changes are:

Article 12 (j): Replace with --The convention shall be held in Temple, Texas for every convention.

REASON: Temple is more centrally located for all members of the Society. Also, it would be easier on the officers and staff of the Home Office to coordinate the activities. Expenses would be less as the traveling time of the officers would be cut to a local level rather that out of the city of Temple. Behind the scenes rental of various equipment would be available at the Home Office. Copy machines, computers, typewriters, etc., have to be available for providing the delegates with the Proceedings minutes and various other printing. Money saved can be used elsewhere. In our economy today, we are looking for ways to "cut back." Let's begin in Temple.

Article 32 (a) Change the first sentence to read: Regular meetings of the Supreme Lodge are held quarterly, the third week in January, the second week in April, July and October.

Article 19 (b). Delete. - It is felt that the By-Law Committee may meet to consider those by-law changes forth without the expense of having legal counsel present for all meetings. If there is a question raised concerning the legality of a particular action, the By-Law Committee may contact the legal advisor with that question.

REASON: January meeting needs more time to allow for the annual reports to be completed. Leave the meetings quarterly. Quarterly meetings were set up to coincide with quarterly reports.

Why do they need to meet more, are we not trying to find ways to cut expenses? This would give the Directors per diem and mileage for two more meetings.

Article 27 (a). Amend to read: "Be an active member of this Society." - In the event an officer is incapacitated, a qualified replacement may not have been a member for five years.

Article 19 (b) Change to read: (This was submitted by the Insurance Committee adding the three other standing committees to this article.)

See Vestnik of April 8, top of page 4.

(d). Delete. - While it is felt the Society will and has to stress the Czech culture, being able to speak the Czech langauge in order to serve as an officer may be a hindrance to qualified candidates.

The Supreme Lodge officers may attend meetings of these standing committees by request of these committees. Final decisions made by these committees must be submitted to the Legal Advisor for his review and advise either in writing or by requesting his presence for verbal discussion in a meeting.

Article 38 "(k). Sales Representative. The Vice President of insurance may appoint a sales representative in those lodges where there is no active sales representative." (This is a new proposal.)

Articles 78, 79, 80, 82: Delete all. - We feel there are very few if any lodges that perform the task of actively investigating new members.

Article 104 (a). Amend the amount of $100,000 to $250,000. (b). "In the event the application does not exceed $60,000, such inspections shall be made by the director within whose district the offered security is situated. If the application exceeds $60,000, then such inspections shall be made by the director within whose district the offered security is situated with one other director. For those applications that exceed $150,000, such inspection shall be made with two directors and one officer of the Supreme Lodge. For any applications that exceed $100,000, a Credit Committee shall review the application for credit worthiness and security."

REASON: All officers should be available to all the standing committees when they meet should there be any questions of the committees. The Legal Advisor need not always be present, however, he should have the right to review and offer legal advise on any decisions made by these committees. This is to protect our Society and our members. That is why we have a Legal Advisor.

Karel Havlicek Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville April 12, 1992 In the regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville on April 12, 1992, the membership of Lodge 4 voted to recommend the following to the By-Law Committee: (1.) That there be no name change in the name of our Society.

(2.) Article 41 - Legal Advisor - that the office of Legal Advisor remain an elective office and he/she be elected by the convention delegates and he/she meets with the By-Law Committee.

(3.) That the Editor remain an elective office. Editor to be elected by the convention delegates.

(4.) Article 43 (b): To be completely eliminated.

Reason: The chairman belongs under Article 37. The President should preside at Supreme Lodge meetings.

District V Recommendations to the By-Law Committee District V respectfully submits the following amendments to the by-laws and also revisions for some previously submitted.

(f) to Article 27 -- Should have served as a local lodge officer, district officer and at least one four-year term on one of the SPJST Standing Committees.

REASON: This is the only way that you gain the experience of how local lodge operates, how it fits into the district organization and by serving on one of the Standing Committees: By-Law, Finance, Publication or Insurance Committee; you learn how the local lodges and districts fit into the overall picture of the Supreme Lodge operation.

ADD: SUB SECTION, ARTICLE 27 -(g) Candidate should be of sound health.

REASON: No candidate should be authorized to run for the office of Supreme Lodge or Director if their health is questionable, without a medical examination report from his or her doctor.

ADD: SUB SECTION -(h) to Article 27: No candidate should be allowed to run for officer or director of the Supreme Lodge for the purpose of being elected, resigning and passing the elected office to the alternate.

REASON: It is reported that there is a candidate who has been talked into running for Director, with the supporting lodges knowing the candidate is in bad health, but are pushing this candidate to be elected so that the alternate can takeover through the back door

The Chairmanship of the SPJST was changed in the 1984 Convention. We feel that the chair should be returned to the President because he is central to the entire Society. The Directors each have valuable contributions, but they are not a part of the daily operation of the Supreme Lodge.

2. Though the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes are not addressed in the by-laws, we strongly feel that the ownership of these homes should be explained to the membership. If we own them, we should have a stronger voice in their operations. If we do not, the monetary donations and support should be given throughout the state. The good works and charity should not stop, but there should be more equitable distribution, reaching more of our old and sick. It should be noted that at present, the SPJST members residing in these homes number approximately 5%.

3. The District Youth Counselors are elected at each district meeting. In the past when a lodge youth leader was elected to this office, he or she no longer served as lodge youth leader. In order to insure that this happens, perhaps the following change could be made:

We wish to thank him for being able to get to our meeting to present the pins.

Even though the day was grey, the luncheon was well received. All food was donated and those who stayed, had plenty to choose from.

This writer has seen and read some of the proposed changes that have been sent to the By-Law Committee.

Although the committee will be "sifting out the chaff" and doing a good job of it he wishes to add: there will be that slim chance of one or more bad changes to slip through. Many he has read, seem to him to be nothing more than a ploy for someone's own personal gain and not for the good of the Society as a whole. These proposed changes were not thought out nor were they weighed out in terms of cost to the Society in prestige as well as money. This writer suggests STRONGLY, that each delegate read each proposed change and, especially those approved by the committee and ask themselves the following questions: Is this good for the Society as a whole?; Will this hurt the prestige of the Society?; Will this keep the members of the Society from having a say in the operation of the Society?; Will our Society be a democratic Society or will the deciding POWER be left in the hands of the few? Remember delegates: there is always someone who will try to convince you that they know what is good for you and for the Society. You and you alone can decide what is good for you. DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR RIGHT TO DELIBERATE. ENOUGH SAID!!!

Lodge Karel Jona No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: Sunday, the 3rd of May, Karel Jong will hold its 5th monthly meeting of 1992 at 2:00 p.m. in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street. This being the next to last meeting before the convention, a normal "Order of Business" will be followed with convention issues being the main focus of the agenda.

May being the Mother's Day month, mothers present in the meeting will be honored.

A fraternal hour will be held, with the luncheon starting upon the adjournment of the business meeting.

Our monthly meeting on the rainy, dreary and just plain miserable Sunday of April 5th started on time but did not follow a standard "Order of Business."

From the three 50-year membership nin recipients, present, one had to leave early. Brother Jerry Mikulas, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, was present to do the honors. Since the weather was very wet and bad, this writer was pleasantly surprised to see the three recipients make it to the meeting. All three had to come to the meeting from out 7of-town. Brother Mikulas told us he was tempted several times to turn back to Temple because of this very bad weather and poor driving conditions between Tem ple and East Bernard. This writer was prepared for such possibility when Brother Jerry walked through the door.

Fish Fry

On Sunday, May 17, 1992 a fish fry will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 33 Bleiblerville Hall.

The morning activity will begin with fish fry to go from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.; serving of full course meal (eat all you want) including cole slaw, chips, with plenty of bread and catsup at 11:30 a.m. Meal tickets $6.50 for adults; $2.25 for children, 6 to 1 2. Cakes and pies will also be available for dessert.

In addition to the day's activities, a horseshoe tournament will take place; registration,1:00 p.m.; playtime, 2:00 p.m.

Remember, the May meeting on first Sunday, May 3rd.

No. 35, Elk

April 12, 1992 The meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jana Breitkreutz.

Visitors for April were Hubby Frazier, Nathan Roberts and Peggy Blake.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Virlene Kelly and were approved.

The treasurer's report was given by Verna Pavelka and was approved as read.

Youth Leader Dawn Pavelka reported that they had 21 members, 5 associates, 2 guests and 7 adults at their meeting. She also reported that they were planning to fly kites and have a cake walk within the next two weeks.

A motion was made by Dorothy Banik and seconded by Gene Edward Pavelka that the lodge pay for Easter eggs for the kids.

6/VESTNiK—Wednesday, April 29, 1992 April birthday celebrants recognized were Jason Pipes, Stephanie Callaway, Robin Breitkreutz and Verna Pavelka.

The Sunshine Committee reported Vernon Wood had cataract surgery and was doing fine.

Sonny Pavelka reported that he had been contacted by Axtell FFA regarding using the lodge. It was reported that it had not been left in the condition that the regular cleanup crew performs.

Elizabeth Kubitza made a motion that the hall be donated, but that the cleanup crew be paid to clean the hall after its use. The motion was seconded

by Verna Pavelka. The membership approved the motion.

A motion was maae by Elizabeth Kubitza and seconded by Sonny Pavelka that the May lodge meeting be moved from the second Sunday to the first Sunday. The motion carried.

Dorothy Banik suggested that our lodge take out an ad in the convention book. Verna Pavelka will call and get prices on a quarter page ad. Sonny Pavelka made a motion to go ahead and place the ad if it is not too late and Florence Frazier seconded the motion.

The motion carried.

Verna Pavelka received a call from the Junior-Senior games for nursing homebound children to be held May 14th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

She put it in the form of a motion to let the games be held at the lodge and it was seconded by Barbara Pavelka. It was approved by our membership.

The door prizes were won by Charlene Stead for the youth, and D.E. Milner for the adults.

Easter lilies were won by Gene Edward Pavelka, Virlene Kelly, Robin Breitkreutz, and Nancy Milner.

Some correspondence had been received by the lodge and was made available to the membership to read.

A motion was made by Earl Milner and seconded by Verna Pavelka to get the P.A. system repaired and replaced.

The motion was approved.

Sonny Pavelka reported he would be responsible for taking care of replacing the ceiling tiles at the rear of the stage.

There was no further new or old business and the meeting was adjourned.

REMEMBER: May lodge meeting on May 3rd instead of May 10th.

No. 81, Needville

Lodge

On Sunday, April 12, 1992 thirtytwo members attended the regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81. At 12:00 noon everyone enjoyed a bountiful meal. Baked and fried chicken and gravy were brought by Mary Werner and the lodge sisters supplied a variety of vegetables, salads, and home baked goodies for dessert. Our thanks to all who help make these Sunday dinners so enjoyable.

President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, led by Jerry Fabrygel, members remained standing for a moment of silent tribute to the memory of Margaret Pollock and Janie Walzel. Sincere sympathy is extended to their families.

All officers were present. Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the March meeting. The minutes as well as her financial secretary's minutes were accepted. Thank you notes were read from the families of Henry Mikus and

Louis Krobot. Letters of thanks were also received from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II and meals for Senior Citizens, both located in Needville.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall's financial report was presented and approved as read.

Before presenting the Special Fund report Chairman Gilbert Walzel thanked members for their prayers, phone calls and visits because he underwent spinal surgery last week. The Special Fund report was accepted as read.

We missed Sister Vlasta Nowotny again at the meeting. She is now in Autumn Hills at Sugarland, Texas undergoing therapy following hip and ankle surgery. Vlasta, we all hope you'll soon be back home in Needville!

Brother Charlie Matcek recently hurt his back in a fall, but is doing fine now. Sister Vlasta, Brothers Matcek and Walzel, members wish you early recovery. We miss you when you are absent.

Welcome to Jerry and Jo Ann Fabrygel, transferred members to Lodge No. 81 who were with us. We look forward to your attending the monthly meetings.

Under old business the Scholarship Committee reported that some thirty applications for Lodge No. 81's scholarships will be delivered to Needville High School.

Under new business President Macha reported that $200.00 has been anonymously donated to Lodge No. 81 to be placed in our Memorial Fund in honor of our deceased members. This generous and thoughtful donation is gratefully accepted by Lodge No. 81.

Sincere thanks are hereby given to our anonymous donor.

New members received into Lodge No. 81 are Karen Weyant, Christopher S. Weyant, Genna Fojtik and Jacob Dalton Wright. Congratulations to the new members. Come join us at the monthly meetings when possible.

The meeting next month on May 17, 1992 will put us back on the regular schedule of meeting on the third Sunday of each month. This will also hold true in June when the meeting date will coincide with Father's Day. Sister Delores Macha brought a colorful jar of jelly beans to the meeting.

Everyone had the opportunity to guess the number of jelly beans in the jar.

Winners were sisters Cheryl and Amanda Newman who both guessed the exact number of beans the jar contained.

Winners of door prizes donated by the lodge were Benita Walzel, Vincent Joe Newman, Mary Werner and Frances Kubala. Thanks to the Frank Brdeckas, Adolph Machas and Vincent Newmans, Sr. for bringing additional door prizes. These were won by Willie Mae Kuykendall, Lynnette Newman, Gilbert Walzel, Elsie Brdecka, Freida Miller, Sophie Baethe, Edwin Susan, Amanda Newman, and Eddie Pieper.

As mentioned earlier our regular meeting in May will take place on Sunday, May 17 at 12:00 noon. After discussion by the membership, it was voted on to make a one time change in the menu as follows: The meat will not be furnished by the lodge. Instead, the members will bring a meat dish and a vegetable. Dessert will be optional, but not necessary.

Sisters, do not panic at the thought of bringing a meat dish. There are many choices to choose from, such as casserole and pasta dishes which may even be prepared ahead of time.

Mark your calendar now and come to the May 17th meeting at 12:00 noon.

Please bring a meat dish and a vegetable. Dessert is optional.

House Committee Report: Brother Salac thanked Brother Frnka, and C. Petr for help for door installation for handicap and thanked Brother E. Petr for mowing the lawn and Brother Scott for hedge clipping.

Special Committee Report -- Sister Salac thanked all helpers during the bake sale at the same time President Olson thanked all who helped with the garage sale.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council report by Sister Wanda Petr said that the

council will meet May 11 at the Czech Club.

FAC Faye Rejcek reported on dues collected and reminded all that you can still send yours in any time.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported that the Juniors enjoyed a picnic and egg hunt on April 11. The Teens were meeting tonight and enjoying a pizza party.

President Olson reminded all that the sales representatives meet on May 7 in Ennis at Lodge No. 25.

Living Memorial was reported by Sister Wanda Petr in absence of Sister Martha Mandak, who is honeymooning with her new husband, Brother Mike Frnka. Congratulations to the newly-weds.

107, Floresville April Meeting Lodge

Lodge 107 held its meeting on April 12, 1992 at the lodge hall.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Pruski. Roxanne Bertrand led the pledge. President Bayer was absent.

The minutes were read and approved as read. Correspondence from the Supreme Lodge was read and discussed.

Discussion on several ways to conduct fund raisers was held among the members, no definite action was taken.

Youth Leader Liz Bielefeld reported 14 members, 3 visitors and 8 adults were present at their Easter egg hunt.

A district outing is planned for June 28th. DYC Maxine Pavliska reported on the youth leader's retreat and the LIT. Vice President Pruski gave the financial report.

All members please take notice that the May meeting will be held on the first Sunday (May 3) instead of the second which is Mother's Day. Anton Svoboda suggested that some trees be planted on the west side of the hall. Discussion followed.

Presenting awards to our 5Q-year members was the next order of business. Lucille Hegar and William (Billy) Pavliska were our honorees.

Lucille was accompanied to the meeting by her husband Lt. Col. (Retired) Joseph Hegar, and Billy and family were present.

After adjournment, a delicious barbecue meal was served. The chief cook was Billy, assisted by Glen Pruski and Erich Bielefeld. Each family brought a dish to complete the meal. All enjoyed a very special day - watching the children hunt the Easter eggs, the extra joy

in the smiles of those who received prizes and, I'm sure, some must have had slight tummy aches from all the goodies they ate.

The 50-year recipients remembering their younger days that were spent at the hall with their parents, all added up to a full day of pleasure.

Don't forget -- next meeting on May 3rd because several important issues will be discussed.

On April 12, 1992 at 2:00 p.m., President Dennis Hermis called our regular meeting to order.

We had 44 members and 4 guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. All remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed member, Lydia Jurek.

Roll call of officers showed all present at this meeting.

Sister Rosie Tumis read the minutes from our previous meeting due to illness of Secretary Alice Jochen. Thank you, Sister Rosie.

The financial secretary and treasurer reports were read by Rosie Tumis.

Board of Trustees and bar reports were read by Henry Hermis. All committee reports were also given.

Sick Committee reported that the members who were in the hospital were Dorothy Havran, Christopher Schleider, Henrietta Veselka, and Marilyn Spivey. Hope all are on the road to recovery at this time.

Visitors recognized were Jo Ann Buri, Jo Buri, Joe Gambil, and Charles Cilny.

April birthday celebrants are Rita Hermis and Bob Schleider. Anniversary celebrants include Mr. and Mrs. Bob Schleider, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tumis, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Linhart.

Capsule drawing for $40.00 went unclaimed due to the absence of Kenneth Dahn and William Janik. Next month's prize will be $50.00. Other door prizes went to Henry Linhart, Lorraine Motl, Bob Schleider and Emil Kutra, Jr. Youngest member prize went to 4month-old Christopher Schleider, son of Bob and Pat Schleider.

The next meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3 because Mother's Day being the second weekend in May. The meeting adjourned at 2:40 p.m.

Our meeting on April 12th was called to order by President Brother Jerry Milan and led us in reciting the pledge to our flag and all remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Sister Rose Svojger.

May she rest in peace.

Brother Milan welcomed our guests Shirley Clegg from Vancouver, B.C. who is visiting the Milan family. (Sister Svojger was her aunt and Shirley came in for her funeral), Roland and Helen Halberg from Chicago, Illinois; and our faithful, Jewell Clark.

Brother Tal Milan gave a quick report'on the youth club before he joined the 13 youth to the club room where they were busy making Easter baskets, with Sister Lesli Milan helping and they were going to fill the baskets and take them to the nursing home for Easter.

Brother Milan reported on the workshop that was held at Lodge 92 and that we had 8 members present, the By-Law Committee meeting that was held in Temple and the convention is creeping up pretty fast.

We were reminded of the District III meeting at Lodge No. 66 in Elm Mott.

He attended a meeting with Lodges 92, 180 and 183, retrying to get the next convention site in the Metro-plex.

It was voted and approved to take a full page ad for the Southern District Slet Program Book that will be hosted in Fort Worth June 6, 7 and 8. Several members and guests wanted to make a donation for the ad and $100.00 was received. Thank you all. Thanks also to Sister Prill who donated toward the Easter egg hunt prizes.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Rome Milan chosen as "Coach of the Year" as the boys' coach by the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association. He took relatively inexperienced teams and molded them into district winners. Also in the regional meet. He had a contestant to win events and qualify for the State Meet to be held in Odessa May 1 and 2, and to Brother Josh Milan who is still leading the Boswell Pioneers. His performances earned him to compete in all the events at the State Meet; and

Our door prize winners were: (February meeting) Brother Tal Milan and (March meeting) Brother Joe Milan.

The next meeting falls on Mother's Day - May 10. The men will furnish the meat dish and the women will bring covered dishes, salads and desserts; dinner at 1:00 p.m.; meeting, 3:00 p.m.

Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and fellowship. The guests really enjoyed their visit.

I won't get back to writing, so we would like to extend all the mothers a "Happy Mother's Day." So until -keep smiling.

No. 155 Reports

The regular meeting of Lodge 155 was held the first Sunday of the month April 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Faith Community Church meeting room, 1800 Peyton Gin Rd. with Vice President Gary Chmelir presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all in unison.

Vice President Gary Chmelir shed some light on individual activity reports and methods of keeping a record of benevolent acts requested by our Supreme Lodge. These reports should be mailed by May 1st.

Treasurer John Hejl gave his report.

The account of SPJST Lodge 155 fund was transferred from Nation's Bank to Guaranty Federal Savings Bank, the latter waived a service charge and pays interest in our account.

President Clarence Boriski reported to Brother Ted Milan was selected the on the very successful 1992 local "Volunteer of the Year" by the City of lodge officers' workshop held in Elgin on February 29 and the theme of which Lake Worth. Keep up the good work!

Friday night the youth club, with a was "Meeting the Needs of our Memlarge group and parents, attended "The bers." The president, vice president, Velvet Teen Rabbit" play at Casa Ma- secretary, reporter and social coordinanana. Brother B.J. Cleveland was in tor, Doris Boriski attended the workshop. Clarence stated that sales the cast and was enjoyed by all.

We had three visitors, Virginia 6 and under were: Abbe Eaton and Appa Hargiss; in ages 9-12, 1st place-- Dornoff, Jay Dornoff of Houston, and Milena Svobodova from Tabor, Chris Peaton and Zach Wagner.

The women's team winners were Czechoslovakia.

Clarence motioned to adjourn and Martha Milan and Courtney Reynolds -- tie with Denise Richardson and Raymond Prasatik seconded it. ReClaudine Kratz. Mixed men and freshments were served.

Next meeting will be held on May 3 women were Denise and Richard Richardson, Frankie and Martha Milan, Les at John and Laverne Hejl's home, 3308 Greenlawn Parkway. Members will be Garrett and Koy Griffin. Men's group: Shay Hennessey and Les Garrett--beer privileged to be at the showing and hunt; 1st place-Will Gage; 2nd place "presale" of interesting and antique (three tie) Leland Sledge, Shay rummage sale items--large and small.

Another beautiful spring month has gone by since our last meeting. Now it is time for another meeting to be held on May 5, 1992. The trustees' meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting to follow.

Our last meeting was held on April 7 with a nice crowd present. The roll call of officers and trustees revealed most were present.

Secretary Barbara Hartgraves read the minutes of our last meeting and the minutes were approved as read. All other reports were given and accepted as given.

George Rippin, our maintainance handy man, reported on doing a lot of little repairs on the hall. Thank you, George.

After the business meeting an enjoyable buffet dinner was held during the fraternal hour. All the food was brought by the members.

Door prizes were won by Joyce Russell and Joe Hurtik, Jr. Thanks to all those who attended our last meeting and hope that on May 5 we will have even a larger crowd.

Members should take an active part and be sociable.

Remember our country-westerr. dances every Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

Hello from Lodge 188!

We had an Eastern Star District 4 school on March 19, 1992 and two hundred members were here. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

The Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 met April 13th at 10:30 a.m. at the National Hall with President Clara Cohen presiding. "Easter Parade" was the theme song which matched all the pretty decorations on the tables. A lovely Easter bonnet was won by Billie Starr, who agreed to wear it during the meeting and luncheon.

Three new members were introduced. They are Henrietta Pilcher, Betty Whitehead and Annie David.

Welcome to our circle, ladies.

Reading of the minutes of our last meeting and the treasurer's report were approved and filed as read.

Sunshine chairman gave a report on cards sent to members and their families which included a sympathy card to Imogene Reaves on the death of her brother. We were glad to see Art Gillis again. Also, it was reported that Maria Prill is waiting for a donor for an eye transplant. We hope this second surgery will be successful.

May hostesses will be Frances Laux, Kitty Rippin, Aurora Maldino and Mary Frances Windham.

Old Business: Discussion was held on our plans to invite the Dallas Circle of Czech Women to be our guests at a special party possibly in October.

Marie Tesar made a motion that an invitation be sent and motion carried.

Further plans will be made when a reply is received. Members of the Friendship Club offered to join in giving the party. A motion by Martha Durham that they join us and share the expenses was seconded and approved.

That's a generous offer and much appreciated. More details will follow in later meetings.

Birthday wishes were sung to Joyce Tesar, Henrietta Pilscher and Martha Durham.

Before the meeting adjourned, plastic Easter eggs were passed out for a contest. Trying to throw the egg into a small basket for prizes wasn't easy but a lot of fun. Some of the ladies tried several times until all 13 prizes were won. After that excercise, it was lunch time, followed by game time. Fortyone ladies and eight men enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Hope your Easter was a joyous one.

Mikulencak Reunion The Mikulencak family reunion will be held on Saturday, May 9, 1992 in the dining hall at the McKinney Falls State Park near Austin, Texas. Anyone and everyone with a Mikulencak in their ancestry is invited to attend.

Without all the help, ideas and support our district could not be as large and successful as it is. A special thank you to Sharon Holman of Round Rock who has been my assistant DYC for the last 3 years. Sharon is a wonderful leader who has devoted so much. Thank you for all you have done and we look forward to Sharon's continued support with the youth of District II. I want to welcome aboard District II new Assistant DYC Sherry McKenney of Lovelady. I look forward to working with Sherry. Sherry has some wonderful ideas for camp and, of course, her expertise in crafts.

each of you are making plans to attend camp. We have some fantastic crafts planned along with some fun activities. LITs make plans to attend LIT Retreat so you can help out at Junior Camp.

District training for leaders was held on April 4. Thank you to Supreme Lodge for furnishing the facilities for us to meet. There were only a few of us on hand, however, we had a very good and productive training. Check with your leaders and she can bring you up-to-date on any questions you might have.

YAD will be held on Sunday, July 12. Please get your YAD cards turned in to your leaders before June 22.

Also, check your rule books for a few changes which have been made.

District II trip has been set for Monday, August 3. This is the same time as last year which seemed to work out well. District Youth Club officers will meet to set the destination. Give them your suggestions.

Fall meeting will be held in Round Rock on September 27. The Christmas Ornament Contest will be held at this time. The youth clubs will also be conducting a district fund-raiser, which . will be a silent auction. Funds received will go toward a district lock-in. District II Lock-in December 28 - December 29 at Seaton. Mark your calendars.

More details will be available as time gets closer to each activity.

Seaton Youth Continue To Participate In Community Activities Dear Members, The past few months have been filled with many activities for our Seaton Youth Club members. Members made new friends while visiting residents at the Four Seasons Nursing Center at Valentines. The residents enjoyed the treats which were made for each one.

Our annual chili supper/auction fund-raiser was once again a huge success. We thank everyone who helped in any way. Our goal was reached and members voted to purchase a TV and VCR for our youth room. We now have that TV/VCR which will be enjoyed by all of us.

Youth club members and parents participated in our community project, adopt a highway. We found many interesting articles at our recent trash pick up. Thanks once again to Claudette and Tim Reese who always furnish us with doughnuts after our work has been completed.

Our March social included a fun evening of bowling. We all had a great time. I'm still working toward a strike.

It was a great pleasure to host the District II spring meeting.

Congratulations to Michael Morris for a job well done. Good luck Michael at the Mr SPJST Contest in Victoria. We're all rooting for you. We were very proud to have 3 contestants in the Little Mr/Miss SPJST. Jessica Kirby, Andrew Brenek and Ricky Brenek are precious. We are so proud of each of you. I can hardly wait for you to bcome of age to be a member of our youth club. Congratulations to Lori Greger for being elected as the first District Youth Club president.

Seaton is very pleased to once again have a Teen Beseda Circle. We welcome Carey Holman of Round Rock in

Assistant Youth Leader Ginger Greger and I attended the youth leaders workshop held in La Grange. It was great seeing so many friends and all the new faces.

Our April meeting was a very busy day for our youth club. We had 4 beautiful young ladies competing for the title of May Fete queen. Each young lady introduced themselves to the mother lodge and gave a short autobiography. To each of you, Lori Greger, Melanie Koslovsky, Michele Reese and Angela Pechal, I am so proud of you. Congratulations to Angela Pechal who will represent Seaton as our 199293 May Fete queen. Angela has chosen Thomas Gibson as her escort. Thank you to our current May Fete Queen Laura Gibson for mceeing the May Fete contest.

We would like to extend a special invitation to everyone to join us at our May Fete which will be held on Sunday, May 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Following our April meeting, youth members and visitors joined in welcoming the Easter Bunny. Due to the

rainy weather, the Bunny dropped off the eggs throughout the hall. It was such a nice surprise to see the Easter Bunny joining us once again.

Features Quo vadis Yugoslavia!

My reminiscences of the unforgettable trip to Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia Part five of the eight parts article

By John J. Karas from Houston Continuation from the last Vestnik Our next overnight stop was the city of Zadar, where we arrived in the late afternoon. Zadar, 72 miles northwest of Split, is also located in the Dalmatian region of Croatia, on the Adriatic Sea. This town is situated at the tip of peninsula separated by the Zadar Channel from islands of Ugljan and Pasman and possesses a good natural harbor. Zadar's chief industries are shipbuilding, liqueur manufacture and food processing, especially the canning of fish. It is also a tourist center.

Zadar has a turbulent history going back almost 2,000 years. It was originally the Liburnian town of Yader when, about 100 B.C., it was occupied

by Romans and renamed Jadera (the sail). --- Now we know why the Adriatic Sea is usually called by the Slays the Jader Sea (Jadersk6 more) and the Yugoslav Riviera is called Jadran.

Jadera was spared during the invasions of Dalmatia by the Avars and Sla y s in the 7th century A.D. and soon afterwards it was occupied and made the capital of Dalmatia by the Byzantine emperors. The Croats took the town in 923 but were forced to give it up to Venetians before the end of the 10th century. After reverting to Croatian rule (circa 1,100), it was sacked by the Crusaders (1202) and turned over to Venice. It was subsequently conquered by the Croat-Hungarian Kingdom but was sold back to Venice in 1409. After the dissolution of the Venetian Republic by France in 1797, Zadar was incorporated into the Illyrian Provinces on Balkan peninsula. In 1813 it was obtained by Austria along with the rest of Dalmatia and it remained under Austro-Hungarian rule until 1918, when it was captured by the Italians before the end of WWI. The treaty of Rapallo (1920) confirmed Italy's title making Zadar enclave a part of Italy between WWI and WWII. On November 1st 1944, during WWII, the town was captured by Yugoslav forces and awarded to Yugoslavia by the peace treaty with Italy signed in Paris on February 10, 1944. Zadar contains important architectural monuments of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Notable are the church of St. Donato (early 9th century) which is now a museum, and the Basilica of St. Anastasia (13th century). Zadar's population was 25, 140 in 1961.

Our Austrian bus has arrived to this town in the late afternoon. It took now some driving around to find our hotel called Borik, located in the cluster of other hotels named Novi park close to the Adriatic shoreline. --- As our travel arrangement with the "triple K" group now ended, Edith and I had to pay for this hotel ourselves, with additional amount of $20.00 each next morning for our continued travel with the group on the Austrian motorcoach to Zagreb.

Hotel Borik is located at the edge of the bay along with several other well kept hotels making a semi-circle with a continuous walkway connecting all hotels and a park. After shopping and supper we took a pleasant evening stroll through the bay park area listening to the various bands playing at the hotels and at the close-by hall at the edge of one of the naval piers. It was

such a delightful evening, warm but without humidity, and the sky over Zadar and the Ardiatic Sea was full of the bright stars---.

Next day, July 4th, we said good-bye to Zadar and traveled inland towards Zagreb, stopping for a couple of hours at Plitvice National Park. Although we intended to take a boat ride there through the series of cascading emerald green lakes followed by a tour throughout the park, we more-less had to cancel it because of the lack of time. --Since admission was $12.50 a person and 3 hours at least required to take the trip through the park, just about everyone opted for the souvenir shop and the restaurant overlooking the park grounds. While on the restaurant's balcony Edith and I sat at the table next to the water fountain with 5 feet square reservoir containing about 18 more than a foot long trouts.

The water in the reservoir was at the same level as the top of our table. You guessed it! During the half an hour or so we sat there we had at least 6 of these fish jump out and land on our table. They were jumping out indiscriminately; one landed on my plate -thank you, I ate already --- several others missing the table, landed on the floor!

We were soon on our way again, passing now through a fertile plain with cultivated fields and meadows full of grazing cattle in contrast of rocky Dalmatia, Bosna Herzedovina or Monte Negro. We reached Zagreb at dusk, where Edith and I parted, as previously agreed, with the "triple K" group with the understanding to re-join it again on Saturday, July 15th in Prague ready to board the Czech motorcoach to travel across Germany to Frankfurt for the return flight to the good old USA. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia at the foot of Zagreb mountain Medvedica near the Sava River, about 230 miles west --- northwest of Beograde. It is the second largest city of what used to be until recently Yugoslavia. This city is a chief center of light industry producing carpets, leather goods, wood products and textiles. Since 1945 electrical and chemical industries have also been developed on a large scale.

Zagreb is connected with Beograde by a modern highway and railroad and is important point on routes leading from central Europe with the Balkans and from the Danube River to the Adriatic Sea. Site of an old Roman settlement, Zagreb first became prominent when King Ladislav I of Hungary (10771095) established a bishopric here.

After being ravaged by the Mongols in 1242, it was rebuilt and later became a royal free city under the Hungarian crown. (By the way: Mongolian Tartars were stopped by the Czech King Wenceslav I at the borders of Bohemia in 1241 while Jaroslav from ternberk defeated in the same year another Tartar horde at the Moravian city of Olomouc.) By the second half of the 13th century Zagreb became the chief town of Croatia and Slavonia. When the Austro-Hungarian monarchy was reorganized in 1867, this city made the

capital of autonomous Croatia and the seat of the Croatian Diet (Sejm). After WWI, when the new Kingdom of Yugoslavia, including Croatia, was formed, the city lost its status as a capital, but it served since summer 1941 as the capital of the so-called Independent State of Croatia headed by Ante Pavelic, and remained the capital of the Croatian republic in the reconstituted Yugoslav state after 1945.

Zagreb is the main center of Roman Catholicism in Yugoslavia, and possesses a fine 17th century cathedral andl8th century archiepiscopal palace.

This city was for centuries the principal Croatian cultural center.

We took a taxi to the main railway station, bought our rail tickets to Breclav (the Czech border town), put our luggage into storage and explored a center of the city. We had about four hours wait; our fast train to Vienna, Austria, was to depart almost at midnight. When on our way we traveled north to Maribor, the only fast train stop between Zagreb and the Austrian border. Our train engine was changed here and off we were crossing the border to Austria. Good-bye Yugoslavia, we had a glorious time in your beautiful country!

It was a shock to me to hear --- more than 3 years later --- about the unrest and the bloody civil war in the land of the Southern Slays.

How fared all these beautiful historic places I visited a few years ago? Are they O.K. or are they badly damaged or destroyed?

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its next meeting on Sunday, May 17, 1992 at Lodge No. 17, Rozkva, 3609 Preston Avenue in Pasadena, Texas. This meeting will mark the seventh anniversary of the chapter.

A fellowship hour will start at 1:00 p.m. at which time members and guests will have an opportunity to look over the Czech family histories, genealogical data and genealogical research information which will be on display.

The business portion of the meeting will start promptly at 2:00 p.m. Officers for 1992 will be nominated and elected.

The theme of the afternoon's program, which will start at approximately 3:30 p.m., will be genealogy and genealogical research. The guest speaker for the program will be Mr. Leo Baca of Richardson, Texas. Mr. Baca is a noted Czech genealogist who has compiled and published several books of Czech immigation Passenger Lists.

The afternoon will conclude with an old-fashioned Czech Sing-a-Long, led

by Jerri Gruber.

Everyone who has an interest in Czech history, customs, tradition or Czech family genealogy is cordially invited. Members and guests are encouraged to bring and display their family histories.

S monsignorem Kukralem jsem se seznamil v roce 1969 kdyt jsme cestovali v tom roce Kleekovou vSrpravou do Ceskoslovenska. Jan Ev. Kukral byl dobrSqn pfitelem nageho vzacneho Ceskoamerickeho biskupa Jana Ludvika Mofkovskeho odegleho na veenost na jafe roku 1990 a znal se tee s "osmaetyficatnikem" Jindhichem Nermutem a jeho pani Annou z ostrova Tasmanie u Australie. Jindfich Nermut' nahle zemfel, zahy po sve navgteve CSFR, hned po "sametove revoluci," kdyi se man2ele Nermut'ovi vratili domft do Tasmanie.

- Klub navazal spolupraci s firmou GEMO, ktera bude organizovat u nas i v zahranidi koncerty Kmochovy hudby. Znamend to dalgli pfinos pro hudbu.
