March 22 -- Lodge No. 23, Moravia will be hosting District VI spring meeting this Sunday at the Ascension Church Dining Hall in Moravia on FM 957, north of Hallettsville off Highway 77. *** The SPJST Publication Committee

scheduled their meeting Saturday, March 21, 1992 at the Home Office in Temple, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Other committees, namely By-law and Finance, will meet March 28 and 29 at the Home Office in Temple, both days beginning at 9:00 a.m., except the Finance members will be meeting at 8:30 a.m. both days. ***

"Life insurance with a heart."

These few words have entered this editor's mind a number of times in the past twenty plus years, and especially in the recent years when our Society offered to refinance members' real estate loans at a lower rate of interest for a mere $100 charge to pay for the cost of refiguring the payments on the loan at a lower rate of interest.

We have checked a number of banks, lending institutions, other life insurance companies, etc., and it seems that SPJST Society was the only one making such advantages to its members.

Any other organization would charge as much for refinancing as the original financing charges were; therefore, it seems that our Society was very lenient in their charges for refinancing loans to its members. That is a very distinct advantaae of belonging to our SPJST. We are known as a fraternal benefit life insurance society and our many plans of life insurance are available to all of our members. There again our fraternal and benevolent attitude towards the members is revealed in the reasonable monthly and annual payments on our life insurance plans.

SPJST sales representatives are more than glad to explain the various plans of insurance to the members and prospects, so they fully understand the best plan of insurance offered to them.

The trained sales representatives are actually members belonging to a local lod g e the same as other members. This places them in a neighborly, brotherly and sisterly situation as well as in a position to talk with with members and prospects.

Our lodge members and officers should alwayS endeavor to help active sales representatives of their respective lodges by referring new prospects for insurance to them to contact; in that way you will not only be doin g a fraternal act for prospects, but also helping your lodge membership arow.

If we stop to enumerate the many advantages of belonging to our Order, we

find there are many more than seen at first sight.

Let us begin with our youth clubs, where the youth are offered a familytype of atmosphere in lodges, meetings and their youth club meetings getting to know each other and the adult members of their lodges.

They (youth) learn to interact with each other as a group and do not arow up as an individual by themselves. We have youth clubs, youth programs, youth camps and many projects that they can enter where they grow up as sensible adults, along with adult members of their lodges.

Then let us mention scholarships and scholarship programs. There are many more scholarships offered by SPJST than appears on the surface; for instance, our last two "What 100 Pennies Can Buy" programs have generated enough donations each year to give fifteen students scholarships of $500.00 each, plus the scholarship that SPJST szives at the end of each year.

Naturally, this amounts to quite a number of students being helped in their college studies.

Next let : us touch on the local lodges and their members and what they can gain by being active in their lodge and district affairs. They can participate in fraternal fellowship and discussions at meetings and do fraternal and benevolent acts for their fellow members and also various members of their communities. They can participate in enjoyable card/domino tournament competition in their lodges and probably continue to district and state tournaments.

We need to remember that SPJST sponsors and has helped build two S.P.J.S.T. rest homes -- one in Taylor and one in Needville; both are in good standing with the Texas State Board governing rest homes and both have a waiting list of applicants.

There are many things that pass in our daily lives which we do not think of at the moment and yet they are all a part of a fraternal, benevolent system of living.

Our many lodges and their buildings, in several instances, are centers of activity in numerous communities; in some communities, the lcidge building is used for many vicinity activities because they are the only location to accommodate larger gatherings.

These are places where tournaments are held, dances and entertainment provided; they can be rented for festivities other than SPJST. Last, but not least, as members they haVe the privilege of Making loans on the loan values of their certificates (if needed) and also making real estate loans at reasonable interest rates.

Julia Boehm was born in Moulton, Texas in Lavaca County on Sunday, February 9, 1896 to Jim and Mary Gajer. As we celebrate the 1992 Olympics, it comes to mind that in 1896, the year Julia Gajer Bohem was born, the first of the modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece.

Julia had 5 siblings: 2 brothers and 3 sisters. All of the brothers and sisters are deceased except Julia and one sis-

Lodge No. 17, New Tabor Dear Members: Lodge No. 17, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting on March 1 at 2:00 p.m., with all officers present.

A resolution of sympathy was read for departed Brother John Hejl. We ex-

tend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Lodge No. 17 was selected as the site for the horseshoe tournament. Even if you don't "pitch the shoes" come along and root your team on; the date for that is April 25, 1992.

New members are Dean Hoelsher, Cassie and Stefanio Kolojaco.

Committee for the meal on April 25 is FAC Clarence Sefcik, Gladys Hejl, Melvin Skrabanek, Theo Dusek, Randy Gaas and Lola Vavra.

I would like to remind you that the District I meeting will be held at Lodge No. 186, Caldwell on April 12th.

Taylor Lodge'No. 29 met Sunday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. at our lodge hall.

President Melvin Steger called the meeting to order.

Tommy Rieger led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers showed all present except one. The minutes and treasurer's reports were read and approved.

The Property Committee reported that May Fete plans are going strong.

Any member wishing to sell tickets for the project may do so by contacting Lillian Ochs. Allen Matthews thanked everyone who helped with the Tarok Tournament that our lodge hosted on March 7th.

Concerning our social game nights on March 18 we will start playing all paper cards. I think this is a welcome change that will give us a boost. A meeting of all social game workers was set for Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m.

Donna Vanacek gave a short youth club report. Our members present elected two queens for the May Fete; they are Kimberly Holub and Bethany Ball.

The door prize was won by Loretta Tate.

Our next meeting is Sunday, April 12th. See you then!

President Reese began the March monthly meeting by asking for the presentation of flags. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. While standing the members gave a moment of silent prayer for the loss of these members and friends -- Clarence Lastovica, Theodore Yezak, Laverne Bartek, Carolyn Zook.

Welcomed as a visitor and asked to come again was Gertrude Kahlig.

The best of health was wished to Anton Vitek, Martha Palla, Wesley Tupy, Raymond Sodek and John Kohut.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, board members and sales representatives followed by the minutes which were approved.

Announced and accepted as new members were Lester Allen Fettig, Jennifer Deann Pechal, Sharon Marie Childers, William Carroll Childers, Ricky Lee Scott, Linda Marie Wilde, Annie Krcha and Leon Jezek, Sr., transfer. These members are encouraged to participate in all of Lodge 47's activities.

Correspondence received and read was a reminder of the District II spring meeting from District II Secretary Arleen Mayeux. Registration is from 1-2 with the meeting beginning at 2:00 p.m. On the agenda is, of course, election of officers. Please come to show support of our lodge.

A meeting of the delegates will be March 27 at 7:00 p.m.

The board minutes were read by Secretary of the Board Judy Pechal.

Included in President Reese's report was a positive update on ASCAP if that's possible. The settlement of the ASCAP situation come about through the concern of the board members. It should be gratifying to know that from their efforts something good came from an otherwise distressing situation. Brother Reese mentioned the picnic and stated anyone with new ideas, please present them to him.

FAC Ruth Hanusch gave a few details on the spring meeting. Members are asked to bring a vegetable or dessert for the meal. Sister Hanusch announced there will be an Easter egg hunt for adults at the April meeting and the 50-year pin recipients will be honored.

Chairpersons' reports followed.

In the absence of Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky, 1st Assistant Ginger Greger gave the monthly report. She spoke on activities for February, March, April and May, namely, the fundraiser, trash pick-up, social, election of May Fete Queen, the annual Easter egg hunt and a challenge from the youth to the adults to a game of baseball and/or volleyball.

It was approved to donate $50 to the local PBS station of educational programming, KNCT, during its annual telethon.

FAC Ruth recognized Lodge 47's sales representatives -- Emily Stuteville, Vallie Zavodny, Frank Klinkovsky, Wallace Jez, Dolores Skrabanek, Alice Banning, Dorothy Pechal and Willie E. Kohutek. Sister Ruth announced that the top winner for applications and earned premium was Willie E. Kohutek. He graciously stepped aside and the honors went to Frank Klinkovsky - most applications and Emily Stuteville earned premium.

On February 29, 1992 the Local Lodge Officers' Workshop was held in Elgin, Texas with all the SPJST lodges invited to take part to try to meet the needs of our members.

Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska was the workshop coordinator and really did a beautiful job. Leonard had a real on time schedule. If we got a few minutes behind, Leonard made it up somewhere along the way. We promptly started at 10:00 a.m.

When we arrived at 9:00 a.m., the kolaches and coffee were there to get the day started.

The main topic of this meeting was "Meeting the Needs for Our Members." At 10:00 a.m., the meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance.

At 10:05 a.m., Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar welcomed everyone with Lodge 18 President Dale Kessel who welcomed all to the host lodge. At 10:10 a.m. Leonard Mikeska had a vision for the future exercise, ideas, planning, opportunity for individual feedback.

Cyril Pokladnik announced and acknowledged the Fraternalist of the Year, none other than Della Kadlecek, who worked so hard for our society; of course, we all miss her.

We were divided in groups of 8 or 10 persons, and everybody had a chance for an input. This was most successful because all of us could share with each other and get-acquainted. Tim Reese from the Seaton lodge was captain in my group.

Al Kercho was the moderator of the following group, who gave some fine discussion: Mildred Holeman -- By-Law Monta Foster -- Finance Ben Jarma -- Insurance Angeline Kristinek -- Publication All the above gave some fine reports, followed by questions and answers. At 2:00 p.m. successful active lodges sharing information on why they have achieved success and plans for the years. Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska stated that Henry Ford once said: "Work together is success."

Moderator Al Kercho than had a panel from the seven districts. All were fine speakers. I hope all enjoyed it as much as I did.

After the terrible flood we had on March 4 here in Houston and that sun came out so beautifully this morning, I decided to venture out for the day. Of course, I went to Needville S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home to see my Mama Hanka.

She was glad to see me and we had a great time. She's looking forward to her 97th birthday on March 20, and the party at the rest home on the 27th. She looks very well and doesn't complain.

She likes the home very much and also the good food. She loves Mrs. Marx very much.

SPJST Lodge 84 is forming a POWER VOLLEYBALL TEAM for the state tournament to be held November 21, 1992 and would like to begin practicing immediately.

A meeting will be held on SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 1992 FROM 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. AT LODGE 84. We will determine days and times to practice, uniforms, court preparations, volleyball equipment, roster, and Rules and Regulations of SPJST Volleyball.

Lodge 84 Volleyball is open to members ages 12 and over. However, only persons over the age of 16 may actually compete. If you are under 16, remember "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT" and you'll be ready to compete when you turn 16.

At least 12 persons are needed to practice effectively, and at least 6 persons to compete. If you are interested in playing some "serious" volleyball, please attend this meeting.

At our February 17, 1992 meeting we were pleased to have State Sales Representative Keith Gatewood speak to us regarding increasing sales in our lodge. He stressed that members should make an extra effort - a team effort - to bring in new members and new sales representatives.

Our meeting officially opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Stanley Vrla read the minutes of the December and January minutes and announced that Lodge 130 has five 50year members this year: Mildred E. Gallia, John Gallia, Jr., Wm. A. Luker, Eleanor Rogers and Frances Sparks.

Financial Secretary Arnold Vrla reported that he is still receiving local lodge dues. Treasurer Eugene Parma gave his report which was accepted, and requested an audit of the books.

Beseda Director Martha Vrla announced that Beseda practice will start the first of April and will be held weekly, probably at a member's home Scheduled performances that will be coming up are May 23 - Garland Heritage Park; International Bazaar at Addison Convention Center May 1, 2, 3; Texas Folklife Festival (still undecided) August 6-9.

Delegates to the American-Czech Culture Society will be Arnold Vrla, Keith and Nancy Shinn and David Hlavenka.

At the February Fraternal Council meeting which was held at Lodge 84 we were hosts, and had an exceptionally fine turnout. We need to thank all our members for their help and wonderful food, and a big special thank you to Joshua, Jill and Jeremy Hlavenka for the special Valentine's decorations on our social games' prize sacks - you did a great job!

Lodge 84 informed us that they will hold a garage sale on April 8 and requested that we donate any items we may not need. Also March 15 is their anniversary dinner. On May 24 Brother Sid Pokladnik's band will play for a dance beginning at 3:00 p.m.; admission is $5, which includes a good meal.

Arnold Vrla, Eugene and Rose Ann Parma were invited to Timbercreek Elementary School in Lewisville to help them celebrate their International Week's Celebrating Differences. I think we presented a very meaningful and informative program covering Czech costumes, language, history and

dance. The children were very enthusiastic, especially when we taught them our Czech Mixer - a lot of dancers is that bunch!

Our Sister Helen Vrla, Eugene Parma and Rose Ann Parma recently had the opportunity to visit the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor, Texas, especially our very dear friend Sister Fannie Konakovsky. Sister Vrla and Sister Konakovsky have been very close friends for over 65 years and it was such a pleasure to see the two ladies renewing and reviewing their years of friendship together. Enclosed is a picture of the two ladies - don't they look happy?

San Antonio Lodge Holds February Meeting Dear Members: The last few weeks, Lodge 133 has been busy preparing for our 75th Anniversary. By the time you read this article, the celebration will be over.

However, I feel the preparations for this celebration has brought all of us closer together. We are anxiously looking forward to seeing some of our members who have not visited with us for some time. It will be great to meet more of our members.

At our February meeting, preparations continued. We had a letter from Sister Marcella Kleprlik thanking the members for all of their thoughts and

prayers. At our meeting we congratulated the following members who celebrated February wedding anniversaries: Emil and Evelyn Matula, Jerry and Bessie Sliva and Joe and Viola Spacek. The last week of February, the Lodge Officers' Workshop was held in Elgin, Texas. Brother and Sister Alma Trilicek and I attended the meeting. It was a meeting well organized and interesting. I had the honor of being on the panel of members who told why their lodge was successful. I must say I was not prepared to face the audience who was there. It's been too long since I've made a public presentation. I failed to mention one of the most important reasons Lodge 133 is a success and that is PEOPLE. We have a wonderful group of members. We feel it is essential for each person who attends our meetings to feel he is welcome and important. We also realize the import-

them on special occasions. Our lodge has a lot to offer anyone who wants to join us. If you have not had a chance to visit with us at one of our monthly meetings, try to come. We meet each third Sunday at the St. Margaret Mary Activity Center, 1314 Fair Avenue.

However, we will not have an April meeting, since the third Sunday falls on Easter Sunday. If you are ill or have a family member who is a member of our lodge who is ill, please let us know so we can keep in touch.

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting this afternoon was called to order by President Jerry Milan.

Brother Milan welcomed all the youth members who joined us in our meeting, and Sister Eva Dockery who came in from Arizona to celebrate her mother - Sister Maria Prill's 82nd birthday yesterday (7th) along with Jewell Clark.

The pledge to our flag was recited by all present; and we remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased Sister Martha Gieson and Sister Mydell Grochoske of Lodge No. 180. May they rest in eternal peace.

We felt a loss without our secretary, Sister Mary Renfro, who has been in the hospital since Monday. Friday she had an angioplastic surgery and hopes to go home real soon -- get well soon, you were missed.

Our treasurer, Anna Johnson, gave her report and Sister Mary Pavey reported on all cards sent.

Brother Milan gave a report on the By-Law Committee meeting he just attended in Temple. Sister Rose Steinman gave a report on the workshop meeting held in Elgin, also attending were Sisters Mary Renfro, Anna Johnson, Carol Sanders and Mary Pavey.

We also enjoyed the hospitality. Lodge No. 18 really made us feel welcome. I really enjoyed visiting with a group of friends from Houston. I don't get to be around that group very much.

Youth leader, Sister Carolyn Cleveland, reported the youth club will have a meeting Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m., then will go to Casa Manana to see The Lion-The Witch-The Wardrobe", a play based on a childrens' book. This is the first appearance that Brothers B.J. and Ky Cleveland will be making in a professional capacity. She also reminded us of the workshop that will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 92 on Monday, March 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Here she is already reminding us of the Easter Picnic on April 19th. More details later. Where are these days going to?

All our travelers arrived home safely: Sister Billie Joe Mason from a ski trip to Aspen, Colorado; Brother Tal and Sister Lesli Milan, Sister Lisa Hopkins and friends - skiing in Taos, New Mexico; Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman joined her daughter Sister Kelly Eaton and granddaughter Sister Abbe Eaton of Chicago, Illinois in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan attended Henrietta's art showing in Scottsdale, Arizona, then went on to Los Angeles, California on a business trip and spent several days with Sister Evelyn (Pavelka) Riha and Sister Libbie (Pavelka) Kucher; and Sister Jeanie Mason after a month in New Zealand visiting her daughter Sister Sherri Mason. Sister Jeanie had a lot to tel! about that beautiful country. Everyone had a wonderful time.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Sisters Maria Prill, Carrie Milan and Brother Ky Cleveland, with a beautiful cake by Sister Anna Johnson. May you all have many more and to all our March celebrants.

Talented Cleveland Brothers Perform Together

By Becky Cooper B.J. and Ky Cleveland are walking, talking, singing proof that talent is often shared among family members.

B.J. is a resident actor and teacher at Casa Manana, having performed there since he was eight years old. He is also the host of B.J. and the Super Ones on KTVT Channel 11 weekday mornings and afternoons.

B.J. is performing in Casa's "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe," a play based on the children's books by C.S. Lewis. The difference in this performance is that his younger brother, Ky, will be making his first appearance at Casa and performing with his big brother.

Ky is an eighth grade student at Wayside Middle School. At fourteen years of age, Ky is a veteran performer. He is a member of the Kids Who Care group with the Fort Worth Theatre School and appeared in performances of Shakespeare in the Park.

Although this is the first appearance B.J. and Ky will be making in a professional capacity, they performed together in Boswell's 1981 musical, Oklahoma! B.J. is a 1982 graduate of Boswell.

The play was presented March 6-14 with Friday evening and Saturday matinee performances. ***

The Boswell Gymnastics Team Defeats World Of Gymnastics

By Don Rogers The Boswell boys scored an impressive victory in a dual meet with World of Gymnastics at the Boswell gym.

Most impressive of all in the meet was Josh Milan who placed first in every event of the meet. He and teammate William Aston tied for first in the pommel horse, scoring 8.6 for the event. Milan won the floor exercise, with a 9.5, the rings in 9.3, the Vault in 9.1, the parallel bars in 9.3 and the high bars in 8.9.

Milan won the all-around with a total of 54.7 with teammates Jason Barber and David Hofer second and third respectively with 45.5 and 43.0 totals.

Hofer placed second in the vault, while Barber finished second in the parallel bars.

Third place finishes were recorded

by Barber in the pommel horse and vault, and by Hofer in the floor exercise and high bars.

The Pioneers next match was at the Highland Park Invitational Tournament at Highland Park High School on Friday. Competition started at 6:30 p.m.

Corpus Christi Circle Of Women There were twenty-one members and one guest present at our meeting Thursday, March 5th. Our Treasurer Lillie Hajek had a previous commitment and gave me her report to read at the meeting. Our guest was Kathy Marek, daughter of Edwin and Betty Jurica. Betty brought Kathy to the meeting and since she joined the Krouzek, they are the first motherdaughter team to belong. We are glad to have you join us, Kathy. This brings our membership to twenty-four.

After the treasurer's report was read, we decided : a small donation could be made to Sokol Corpus Christi. Millie Elzner made a motion we donate $50; seconded by Mary Ann Elzner. It is only fitting that we contribute towards the cost of running a hugh hall. I will present the $50 donation at the next Sokol meeting.

Pauline Novosad brought an American flag for our use and also donated a box of greeting cards. She also donated prizes won by Donna Havranek, Della Elzner and Georgie Ann Kubala.

Norma Baker made the beautiful door prize won by Mary Ann Elzner. It was a square scarf in a unique filet crochet bird and flower design. I have never seen anything quite like it.

Lucky Mary Ann! Velma Malchar won a Plastic Needlepoint glass case and a Radish Fridgie, both made by yours truly.

Several ladies brought prizes to be given at future meetings.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Velma Malchar and a belated happy birthday to Albertina Oakes and Annie Regmund after which we played a few games.

Our main hostess for the month, Della Elzner, did an outstanding job of preparing King Ranch chicken for our luncheon. What makes this remarkable is that Della underwent cataract surgery the previou's week. She is also very active as president of the Altar Society of St. Pius Church. Della and her group of hostesses are to be congratulated on the delicious food they brought and we thank them.

For those of you unfamiliar with South Texas cuisine, King Ralch chicken is a delicious slightly st .cy casserole made with corn tortillas, cheese and, of course, chicken.

Jerry Elzner arrived in time for a bite to eat, a little visiting and to help put up tables and chairs. We appreciate your help, Jerry.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Happenings Dear Members and Friends, The youth club held their meeting at 2:30 p.m. with a fair attendance.

On February 14 the Valentine party had a large attendance and everyone enjoyed the hot dogs with all the trimmings; then, we exchanged Valentines and also Robert and Lydia Dobecka had their wedding anniversary. Bobby and Peggy Dobecka plus children brought them a cake, which was delicious.

On February 21 we worked on Easter baskets for the rest home residents and we still need more help with the bas-

kets, we also have crafts we can work on.

Our Easter party will be held on April 12; the meeting starts at 1:00 p.m.; youth club meeting at 2:30 p.m. and Easter program following; Easter egg hunt for the youth and then we will have Easter egg hunt for the elderly people which shall be a lot of fun. I will hunt, too, because I am still young at heart. Afterwards, we will have fried chicken supper and we are asking members to bring salads or desserts. Our youth members will be selling tickets for their money-making project.

Two of our youth club members entered the Camp T-Shirt Design Contest, they were Tammi Dobecka and Celia Dobecka.

Brother George owned and operated his own shoe repair shop for 45 years.

He had served as president of RVOS, been a board member for many years for SPJST Lodge 66 and a member of Lodge 66 since December 1958. He was a member of Herring Avenue United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Maurine Trefny of Dallas; one son, George Henry Trefny of Farmers Branch; three sisters, Gertrude Brandt and Emmie Klosel of Schulenburg and Adeline Brandt of La Grange; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mydell, a retired registered nurse, died at a Fort Worth hospital on March 2, 1992.

Funeral Mass was held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Burial was in Mart Cemetery in McLennan County under the direction of Harveson and Cole Funeral Home.

Sister Grochoske was born in Mart and lived in Fort Worth for 42 years.

She was a graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Waco.

Imagine arriving in New York City in 1891, not knowing a word of English and trying to find your way to Iowa City where the only work is in a limestone quarry earning $1.50 per day.

Bill grew up under the watchful eyes of hard-working but loving parents.

The family believed that each individual had a duty and responsibility in the household. Whenever anyone shirked his duty, it fell upon the next older to do the task in addition to his own or else see that it was done as required.

Bill also had a doting grandmother (babiLtka) who believed "little VilI'k" could do no wrong.

As Bill was graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in science, the college was visited by Ms. Kinkaid, founder and benefactor of Kinkaid, a private school in Houston.

She was looking for a science teacher.

One of ten applicants, Bill was hired and came to Houston in August 1927, to teach biology and chemistry at the Kinkaid School on Richmond at the then fantastic salary of $1,800/year.

During his 20-year tenure at Kinkaid, many of today's well-known political and financial magnates as well as many of Houston's "movers and shakers" attended Bill's classes.

It was in 1927, while answering an ad for a room and board near Kinkaid, that Bill met Alice Huwieler, then 16 and a senior at San Jacinto High. It was a case of love at first sight for both and they were married in 1930.

Alice became a noted porcelain painter and taught porcelain painting in her studio at their home during the 70s.

Their daughter Julie was born in 1938 and is a Rice graduate in Math. She is presently a Research Statistician for a pharmaceutical firm in Oak Park, Illinois and is a foster parent to two fine boys.

Bill retired from Prudential Company in 1970 after 24 years as a mortgage loan appraiser. After a short time of getting under Alice's feet at home, he decided he would teach the Czech language. Czech Students Recognize Instructor's Achievements The Czech Heritage Society states there are over one million Texans of Czech descent and that Czech is the third most spoken language in Texas following English and Spanish.

Most of us Czechs can think of someone we feel has done something "extra" to perpetuate our Czech heritage. As a champion of champions, we submit that William E. (Bill) Souchek deserves your earnest consideration.

Born December 1, 1905 in Iowa City, Iowa to Julie (NeradovS) and Josef Sou&k, Bill is the youngest of six boys and two girls born to the Soucek family. Josef, a foundry worker in Otrorinevec, his wife Julie and three children came to America in 1891 for the same reasons as that of our forefathers in the 1770s - eco-

Bill became a member of Lodge 88 in 1980 and continues to be an active member. Bill continues to teach Czech at Lodge 88 where on January 16, 1992 he started his twenty-first class.

Incidently his classes are well-known and well-attended. Class attendance has numbered as high as 52.

Bill and Alice took a tour group of 15 Czech language teachers to Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1982. While there they visited "Chalupa L1slo 26" in the village of Zd6j6ina (his mother's birthplace) and saw an old apple tree that was planted as a "good luck" tree in 1891 when his parents left for America. Even though the tree has been struck by lightning twice and the main trunk was a stump the tree is still growing. They also visited the old Nerad and Sounk homesteads in Otrotinevec that are now inhabited by the fourth generation born there. In the Soucek homestead, he found an oval wall clock that originally belonged to his grandparents 135 years ago. The clock was given to Bill and Alice and now hangs in their den merrily ticking away and keeping the correct time. Also against the hearth

stands an old grain flail used by his grandparents over a century ago. Additionally, there are Czech figurines and keepsakes around the house.

Bill encountered that dreaded word "Cancer" upon his return from Europe in 1982. After major surgery and therapy, Bill continues to maintain a positive attitude, a cheerful disposition and an intense interest in furthering the Czech language.

With the pride of all this Czech heritage driving William E. (Bill) Souchek, is there any wonder as to why he keeps trying to perpetuate the language in Texas (Stat Osamele Hvezdy)?

Dear Editor, I'm looking for an American woman who visited Czechoslovakia in June 1985 (during Spartakiada-mass trainers' festival in Prague). She was slim, blonde haired with spectacles, wore green pant-dress attire, at the age of 50 years. She didn't speak perfect Czech, however, she was accompanied by an older man from Milevsko. Both man and woman visited the PiseckS Smole6 No. 12 village and there asked the Zunt family for information about people named p upa. They didn't obtain satisfactory reply, left and probably continued their searching in the Nemjice village. They probably looked for my parents - Frantiek Tupa and Antonie 1 upa, girl name Zunt.

Plsek Baylor University Outstanding Student Valeri

On February 29, 1992, Valeri Plsek was presented to over 400 members of the Baylor University Development Council as the outstanding academic student of her school.

Valeri is a junior university scholar at Baylor. She also holds the title of Barry M. Goldwater scholar, which was awarded to two students in the State of Texas. This scholarship pays her full tuition to Baylor. She is also the recipient of the Baylor Presidential scholarship and the Special Topics award for research in biology. She is a member of Alphe Lambda Delta, Gamma Beta Phi, Golden Key, Alpha Chi, and Beta Beta Beta National Honor Societies.

The development council gave Valeri a standing ovation after being presented by Dr. Donald D. Schmeltekopf, vice president for academic affairs. They were especially excited by the fact that Valeri milks a cow, raises chickens, has a brangus heifer, and is trainin g her own horse while attending Baylor and doing research for publication.

Valeri plans to go to Texas A&M University after next year to earn a

Ph.D. in biology. She would then like to teach at Baylor.

Valeri's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Plsek, are members of SPJST Lodge No. 47.

Planning Situations In Eastern Europe

Language

How did the Slovak language come into being? Slovak exists as a written language since the Middle Ages, but there was not a standardized language until the mid-19th century. This was due partly to the fact that Slovaks speak a variety of dialects. The areas in which these dialects are spoken can be identified by drawing two lines north and south across a Slovak map.

Slovakia can thus be divided into proportionate western, central and eastern sections, which correspond to the three major groupings of dialects.

The earliest attempts to standardized Slovak were based on western dialects, although in the 18th century Calvinists in eastern Slovakia developed their own literary language based on the local dialect. The modern language, which is based on the dialects of central Slovakia, was created in the mid19th century by tudovit Satur, Jozef Hurban and Michal Hodza. The first ublication in this new language was nfr's Slovenskeje nirodNje novini (The Slovak National News), which began publication in 1844.

Although Czech had enjoyed great prestige throughout Slovakia, the two major groups of Slovak intellectuals and leaders, Catholics and Protestants, agreed by the 19th century that their nation's future depended upon the development of their own language. It is important to note that this decision was made before the establishment of the Czechoslovak state, while-Slovakia was ruled by an oppressive Hungarian regime.

With time the language of Stur was accepted by all Slovaks. It had the advantage, being based upon the speech of the central section of Slovakia, of being understood by all Slovaks. With the concept of the dialect continuum in mind it can be seen that, should the dialects of western Slovakia have remained the basis of the literary language, the language would have been more difficult for the population of eastern Slovakia. From the point of view,9f the linguist and language planner, Stir's idea of choosing the dialects of the geographic center of the country as the basis of his language was an excellent one.

Many of the world's literary languages go back farther in history than the 19th century and their creation cannot be ascribed to a single individual or group of individuals. Czech, for example, evolved slowly over the centuries. Although Hus' reform of the Czech alphabet can be considered a conscious act of language planning, the language itself developed freely and naturally as generations of writers put their individual mark on the language. The dialect spoken in central Bohemia formed the basis of the literary language that developed. The influence of this dialet and the speech of Prague has been so strong that there is very little variation found today in the dialects of Bohemia.

The Czech language is unique in the sense that over the centuries it has undergone more significant change than most other Slavic languages. This

means that the n/Ddern language is often pronounced quite differently than it is spelled. This same act is true of English. Our written language for the most part represents how English was once actually pronounced, although over the centuries written English has only rarely been altered to accommodate the changes in pronunciation. Though the gap between the written and spoken languages is not so significant in Czech as in English, this feature of Czech is nevertheless noteworthy when comparing the various Slavic languages.

The way in which sounds and words are pronounced changes with the passage of time. This is something which happens unconsciously among communities of speakers. We speak differently today than our ancestors did a century ago. Those written languages, such as Czech and English, which have a long literary tradition are bound to reflect certain archaic ways of speaking. Literary Slovak, on the other hand, is much close: to the language actually spoken by Slovaks today.

Slovak is a language more conservative than Czech and in many respects, it is closer to the ancient Common Slavic tongue spoken by the ancestors of all modern Sla y s. Yet it is also necessary to note that modern colloquial Slovak may appear more conservative than Czech simply because literary Slovak was standardized only in the 19th century. Colloquial Slovak has not undergone enough change in the passage of a single century to differ markedly from the written language.

It is unnecessary then to talk today about a reform of the Slovak language.

Yet some Czech writers are advocating reforms for their language. Some feel that the written language ("spisovra &tina") should more accurately represent the spoken ("hovorov 'eeYtina"). In the last centuries the spoken Czech language has undergone changes which are reflected today neither in the written language nor in speech of Moravia and Slovakia. One example of these changes is that of the Czech vowel "r to the diphthong "j," as in the literary form bcrt "to be" and colloquail bejt. Another change is o > vo in initial syllables: We'd "dinner" > vob'd. Any reforms to bring literary Czech in line with these changes unfortunately will only create greater differences between Czech and Slovak and between Czech and the speech of Moravia.

The most expressive variety of colloquial Czech is that heard in Prague, where a special pronunciation and slang have developed. The influence of Prague speech ("pranina"), which is fashionable among young and the educated, is growing throughout Bohemia and Moravia and is even felt in Slovakia. Under communist rule all political and cultural power was centralized in Prague, to the point that even some Slovak politicians felt the need to speak Czech. It remains to be seen whether the reforms which have taken place in Czechoslovakia since 1989 will bring about a loosening of Prague's stranglehold on the nation's language.

Some controversy surrounds the question of the language spoken in Moravia. It is a fact that the greatest Moravian writers and thinkers chose Czech as their literary vehicle, just as many early Slovak writers did.

Moravians such as educator Jan Amos Komensky (b. 1592) called themselves Moravians while they identified their literary language as Czech. Moravians thus possess what can be described as a Moravian national identity and con-

sciousness, although there is no Moravian literary language. Unlike in Bohemia, where Prague was the center of culture and learning, Moravia has had two capitals in modern centuries, Brno in the south and Olomouc in the north. Neither of these cultural centers succeeded in producing a literary language. The dialects of Moravia, which in the west resemble Czech, in the east Slovak and in the north Polish, have remained distinct from one another up to the present time (so far as they have managed to survive the advances Czech has made through schools and the mass media).

Certain differences arose between the literary Czech language resurrected in the 19th century by leaders of the Czech National Awakening and the colloquial speech of Moravia. These Czech scholars often knew German better than Slavic and they introduced many of their own innovations into Czech which were not understood by the common Moravian. Scholars argued, however, that the language of the peasants was inadequate to replace a refined world language such as German and thus was in need of modernization. In Moravia the language of the Czech National Awakening was commonly regarded as something artificial, which did not correspond to Moravian speech. This party explains a certain coolness displayed by the peasantry in 19th century Moravia towards Prague's cultural leadership.

When Cyril and Methodius introduced the first form of literary Slavic in Moravia, this language was based upon a South Slavic dialect spoken in Macedonia. (From their childhood Cyril and Methodius spoke the language of the Slavic population of Macedonia.) Only after the missionaries' arrival in Moravia did their new literary language take on certain characteristics which modern linguists have defined as Moravian. (In the time of Cyril and Methodius all Sla y s spoke a similar language and understood each other without difficulty. Thus the "Moravianisms" found in early Church Slavonic texts represent slight and very subtle dialectal differences.) Yet the early language spoken and written in Moravia was called Slavic rather than Moravian.

The concept of the individual Slavic state did not develop until several centuries after the fall of Great Moravia.

Only those Slavic nations which developed their own historical states, e.g.

Russia, Bohemia, Poland and Serbia, developed corresponding concepts of national identity. Those Sla y s inhabiting border areas and territories located far from the centers of these early Slavic states identified themselves up until modern times simply as Slays.

This was true as well in Moravia. In the 19th century Moravians most often identified their nationality and language as "Slavic." (As a schoolboy in Moravia, Tom g G. Masaryk registered his nationality as Slavic.) The Moravians of the 19th century, like Slovak leaders in that day, were more enthusiastic about a large political state composed of various Slavic people than a smaller state made up only of their immediate neighbors.

Other Moravians in the 19th century consciously identified their nationality as Moravian. Evidence of this abounds in Texas, where the majority of immigrants hailed from far northeastern Moravia and Silesia. It was in these isolated areas that the concept of a Czech national identity was least developed. Moravians most enthusiastically embraced the concept of a Moravian national identity and Ian-

Feelings about national identity may also be represented through a continuum. As with the dialect continuum, where similarities and change in language flow into one another on a map like a spectrum of color, the intensity of feelings of national consciousness can be plotted geographically. Enthusiasm for the Czech national idea was strongest in Prague and nearby areas.

In Moravia this enthusiasm waned as one travelled eastward. In western Slovakia it was weak, in eastern Slovakia non-existent. Researchers studying Eastern Europe can similarly illustrate ethnographic data (e.g. the occurrence of folk customs) and sociological information (e.g. the intensity of religious feeling) through similar continuums.

Although Moravians possessed a strong feeling of identity as Moravians, the language they wrote with was Czech. It is of interest, however, to note two attempts made by natives of Bohemia to establish a literary Moravian language. Frantink Trnka sought to introduce a written language based on the dialect of Moravian Slovkko. In 1831 he published a grammar written in this dialect and a collection of proverbs from Slovacko.

V. nk (1797-1867), like Trnka a native of Bohemia, attempted to create a literary Moravian language which he hoped would bridge Czech and Slovak.

Both Trnka and 6k expressed a preference for Moravian speech as softer and more melodious than Czech. Their efforts were harshly attacked, however, by Franti gek PalackS-7, who in 1832 defended the use of Czech in Moravia. Palacq's influence was so great that most scholars and national leaders in Moravia became convinced that the loss of the common literary language would irreparably harm Czechs as well as Moravians. Thus those who believed in the advantages of literary Czech (as a multinational language for use among Czechs, Moravians, Slovaks and neighboring Slavic minorities) won out in Moravia, while they were defeated in Slovakia.

There was another attempt to establish a Moravian-Silesian language which was even more controversial than Trnka's and alc's. Poet 6ndra Lysohorsky (1905-1989), a native of Frydek in Silesia, published several collections of poems in a new literary language which he called Lachian.

(Lachia or Lank() is the ethnographic region in far northeastern Moravia and neighboring Silesia.) In his poetry Lysohorsky consciously promoted the idea of a Lachian nation which was oppressed by Czechs, Poles and Germans. Lysohorsky was a poet with great talent, but he had no linguistic training and his ideas met sharp criticism. He poorly understood the concept of the dialect continuum; according to Lysohorsky, his literary Lachian was to become the language of all neighboring ethnographic regions, including Hans and Vala gsko in Moravia as well as Polish Silesia. (Actually the speech of Hand is as close to Czech and that of Valanko as close to Slovak as they are to the dialects of Silesia.) Lysohorsky's ideas later gained great sympathy outside of Czechoslovakia, primarily because of his talent as a poet and publicist and his persecution by Czech communists. Yet he ultimately failed at his goal of establishing a Lachian language. By the mid-20th century the day had already long passed in Slavic Europe for the creation of a new language and national identity. The activities of Trnka, Zak and Lysohorsky represent failures

in language planning.

Since 1989 a strong nationalist movement, which advocates the official recognition of separate Moravian and Silesian nationalities, has developed in Moravia and Silesia. It is of interest to note that few leaders of this movement have any quarrel with the Czech language; they speak and write Czech. Ironically the educated population in Moravian Slovkko, where this movement finds its strongest support, today speaks and writes Czech, although earlier in the century it spoke Slovak and identified itself as "Moravian Slovak." (Before the Czechoslovak state was established, Slovaks in Slovakia proper called themselves Hungarian Slovaks, because they were under Hungarian rule. Thus Slovaks were formerly an ethnic group made up of Moravian Slovaks in Moravia and Hungarian Slovaks in Slovakia.)

It is necessary to note that throughout much of the world, language planning is orchestrated not by linguists, but by politicians who use language to achieve political goals. The policies of the Prague government represent an effective use of language planning for political purposes. Sensitive to the separatist sympathies of many Slovaks and some Moravians, Prague politicians for decades have used their political powers to promote the Czech language and national identity. In Moravian Slovkko, where the population traditionally gave little thought to questions of national identity, Prague's policies have been effective. While Magyars in the 19th century forcibly assimilated Slovaks, the Prague government in this century has used more subtle methods for making Czechs of the Moravian Slovaks.

Language planning by definition should bring about positive results in a language community. Language planning in Eastern Europe has only rarely lived up to its potential, however. Language planning on its largest scale took place in the Soviet Union, where over 120 distinct languages are spoken. While there were sincere attempts earlier in this century to create and develop written languages for those numerous Soviet nationalities (chiefly in the eastern and border areas of the U.S.S.R.) which had no literary tradition, Soviet language planning in Ukraine, Bielorussia and the Baltic states was synonymous with forced Russification. To this day many Russians deny the existence of the Ukrainian and Bielorussian language and national identity; they view these people as essentially Russian and their languages as dialects of Russian. As with Slovak vis-a-vis Czech, the development of the Ukrainian and Bielorussian languages has been impeded by the relative youth of the national literature, which is overshadowed by Russian.

Under Stalin the Russian language was increasingly promoted as the upand-coming international language.

When Eastern Europe fell to the Soviets after World War Two, the policy of imposed Russification was introduced there as well. Czechs, Slovaks, Poles and other nationalities were forced to learn Russian in their schools and workplaces. Out of an understandable resentment, many Eastern Europeans grew to hate the Russian language. Yet there was a certain advantage then to having access to a world-class language like Russian. Throughout the Soviet Bloc and much of the Third World, Russian actually became the common language of communication for statesmen, businessmen and scientists. In this function Russian is now rapidly being abandoned in Eastern

Europe, although it is not likely that English anytime soon will spread there as widely as Russian once did.

Among the West Sla ys there has never been any great love for the Russians. Many Poles despised the Russians as barbarians; Czech thinkers such as Karel Havlieek-Borovsq and Tomg. G. Masaryk were equally critical of everything Russian. This illustrates yet another type of continuum in Eastern Europe, which runs from West to East. Such a continuum corresponds to the popular perceptions of the level of culture and material well-being of neighboring nations and regions. Some Eastern Europeans are firmly convinced that, through some strange design of Providence, their neighbors to the east are by nature less cultured and civilized than they. There may be some foundation to this belief; much in the way of material progress and intellectual enlightenment has traditionally filtered eastward from the West. Yet this prejudice does not wear well on the Eastern European. The Czech who prides himself on his cultural superiority to the Slovak, just like the Pole who fancies himself more civilized than the Ukrainian, often appears foolish in the eyes of the Westerner.

Some of the problems encountered in efforts at language planning in Eastern Europe stem from this prejudice towards the East. The educated Slav who wishes to humiliate his enemy need only call him a vychodniar "easterner," Asiatic, Oriental, barbarian. The saying throughout Europe goes that the further east one goes, the worse things get. Little in the way of material progress ever came from the East, which is for some the source of all disorder and chaos in the world. In some respects there may be a certain truth to this, although it can just as well be argued that the intensity of human warmth, charity and hospitality increases as one advances eastward. Language planners are forced to acknowledge these prejudices when drawing up and implementing their policies.

When Czechoslovakia was created in 1918, the region of Ruthenia also became a part of the Republic. (Thus Czechoslovakia was first a multinational state wtih populations of Czechs, Moravians, Slovaks, Ruthenians and minorities. Others viewed it, however, as a nation of Czechoslovaks or "Czecho-Slays.")

Ruthenia, located east of Slovakia, was even poorer and less developed than Slovakia. Under Hungarian rule the people of Ruthenia, like the Slovaks, had experienced a ruthless policy of Magyarization.

Opposing factions in Ruthenia had since the 19th century promoted Russian, Ukrainian, local dialects and Hungarian as the region's official language. Until the 20th century Church Slavonic served as a basis for various local literary languages. This obscured the fact that there was great variety in the region's dialects. Ruthenia offers a fine example of dialect continuum. Although they may be classified as East Slavic (like Ukrainian and Russian), the local dialects share common features with Slovak, Polish and Ukrainian, depending upon which border a given dialect is located nearest. A major obstacle to the development of a literary Ruthenian language was the diversity of dic.lects and the lack of a single standardized variant. In the past two years, however, there has been renewed discussion on the standarization of Ruthenian.

Under Czech rule there was little focused direction in Prague's language policies in Ruthenia. Mindful chiefly

of the immediate political advantages of its policies, the Prague government at different times supported Russian, Ukrainian and local dialects as the region's official language (in addition to promoting Czech as an administrative language). Prague's policies of language planning were a fiasco which alienated much of the local population.

After World War Two Ruthenia was seized by the Soviet Union and attached to Soviet Ukraine. (Stalin was motivated to do this partly out of a desire to punish Slovaks for their support of the interwar fascist state in Slovakia. Stalin thought at that time of attaching Slovakia as well to the Soviet Union, but he came to the conclusion that Czechs and Moravians would not be able to exist alone in Europe.)

In the past two years some inhabitants of Ruthenia have publicly called for a referendum on Ruthenia's future.

Some would like to see Ruthenia once again become part of Czechoslovakia.

(This would entail a revision of international borders, however, which could have a domino effect. Even the slightest border revision could spark a bloody regional conflict which could spread throughout Eastern Europe.)

Perhaps some of the reasons for the Ruthenian nostalgia for Czech rule are material; the standard of living dropped drastically under Ukrainian rule. Yet perhaps the most pressing reason is Ukrainian nationalism, which has smothered much of the pride and national feeling of Ruthenians. It seems that Ukrainians, so long denied the right to national development, are as intolerant at times of the national aspirations of Ruthenians as their former Russian masters were of Ukrainian national feelings. (The same paradox is found in Lithuania, where the newly established Lithuanian state is restricting the rights of the Polish minority to its native language.)

Ruthenians, locally called Rusnaks or Rusyns, live also in far eastern Slovakia. After World War Two their fate was much the same as the population of Ruthenia. Although they speak a dialect which can be called transitional between East and West Slavic, Slovakia's Rusnaks were officially declared by the Moscow government to be Ukrainian. While their language and culture were similar in some ways to Ukrainian (just as they were similar in other ways to Slovak), these Ruthenians had never identified themselves as Ukrainian.

Moscow's actions were designed to implement a standardized nationalities policy throughout all of Eastern Europe, without regard to the actual desires and aspirations of the populations affected. Yet the Ruthenians of eastern Slovakia objected to Moscow's forced policy of Ukrainianization. Many chose instead to identify themselves as Slovaks. (There were, after all, many more advantages in identifying with the dominant Slovak population than in claiming identity as a minority. No one in Eastern Europe relishes being a member of an ethnic minority.) Thus under communist rule the Ruthenian population of eastern Slovakia shrunk, reduced by the Soviet nationalities policy which was forced upon them from above. When Moscow decreed that a Ukrainian identity was the only one politically correct for all Ruthenians in Slovakia, much of this population opted instead to adopt a Slovak national identity.

Nebo vYlet na Solan. Jeli jsme vysoko po zamrzle ceste, ktera se tak kroutila mezi stromy a kopci, videli jsme dole zasnekne dediny. Ceste byla ledova, ale protole fidie byl stejne story jaka ja., já jsem mu veil. V Texasu bych nikdy za takovYch podmInek auto nefidil. Kdyl u nas napadne snih, to je opravdu kalamita, proto2e nagi idiCi neumeji jezdit v takovYch podminkach.

Navkivil jsem take Karolinku a sklafi byli ke mne moc mill, dokonce mne nechali i fouknout.' ...Bylo to mnoho veeeru, kterY je nejvice zapsan v pameti? ...Hned prvni veeer jsme byli ye Valagskem muzeu v pfirode v Rolnove - to bylo je gte dlouho pfed vanocemi.

Bylo to, jako kdy 2 se rozviji kvet. Muzikanti hrali, deveata z Polajky zpivala koledy, v peci hotel livY oheri a ja jsem si ptipadal jako v nebi.

Cestou domu jsme se brodili v hlubokern snehu, kterY nam ktupal pod nohama a pfisvicovali lucernama, ...To byl jeden z prvnich lalitkn a v pameti se ureite tadi dark a dalgi. jsem rodnou vesnici mYch pfedku Nechvalin a tam jsem byl opravdu dojat. Mne, obyeejneho formate a maleho formate, uvitali jako eestneho obeana. Vezu si o torn jako doklad i listinu. Sometimes it is as "dekuju." Dekuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "dekujeme." It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or "dekuji Yam" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim".

"Rado se stalo" and "neni zae" is used similar to "I was glad to do it," or "don't mention it," in this country.

Dovolte prosim — with your permission, (please) pardon me, (please) odpust'te (prosim) — excuse me, (please) promifite (prosim) — I am sorry— pardon me nic se nestalo — it was nothing The word "prosim" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the context can you tell whether the word "prosim" means "I beg you" or whether it serves as "please".

"Prosim", shown above in parenthesis, because its use is optional, making it more polite.

The words "odpusfte" and "promirite" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promin" and "odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" — in Czech "ty" — (the verb "tykati si"), and persons we address "you" — in Czech "vy" — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si."

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi lito" (or "Ja lituji").

The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "promirite".

It is very common to wish your guests "dobre chutnani" as they are sitting ready to eat. The same wish is sometimes used among members of the family as they start with their meal.
