Time is fast approaching for the convention issue of the Vestnik.

In the fall meetings your editor had begun asking members to start writing histories of the last four (4) years of their lodges and what has happened in their lodges since the last convention, at least. To this date, we have received no histories of any lodges or additions to them thus far, so please keep in mind and start compiling your histories and/or additions to histories of your lodges and start submitting them to the editor as soon as possible because that issue is supposed to be twice the size of a regular issue and we skip a week during convention week and do not publish Vestnik issue, so kindly do so as asked above and send them in to: VESTNIK PO BOX 85 WEST, TEXAS 76691-0085

Also mark convention issue on your envelope, so we will know that it is convention issue material. *** Spring is around the corner and dis-

trict meetings and lodge celebrations will be upon us. District V meeting will take place at Lodge 88 in Houston on Sunday, March 8 and their program schedule is in this issue. District II will have their meeting Sunday, March 15 at Lodge 47, Seaton. On this same day, Lodge 84 in Dallas has their 82nd Anniversary Celebration planned for a full day's attractions; also Lodge 133, San Antonio on the same day (March 15) will celebrate their Diamond Jubilee at St. Margaret Mary Activity Center. The members have been planning for this historical event for some time which shall be an outstanding occasion.

So you see, busy days are ahead for our SPJST members and we wish all of them much success in their endeavors.

*** The first group of recommendations for changes, corrections, addi-

tions, deletions, etc. submitted by By-law Secretary Leona Macha are in this issue; you are encouraged to read them and study them carefully and let your opinion be known to the By-Law Committee pertaining to these recommendations and also keep in mind that they are to be meeting March 28th and 29th at 10:00 a.m (both days) in the Home Office at Temple, so send in your recommendations so they can study them when they meet again. *** The Insurance Committee will also be meeting at the Home Office on March 7 at 9:00 a.m. *** In last week's issue, we mentioned "cashing in" your insurance policy or certificate versus making a loan for the loan value of your certificate and retaining the insurance in force by paying the annual five (5) percent interest on that loan value until times become financially better in anyone's condition and you are able to repay the loan to the Supreme Lodge. In that respect, your insurance is continued without new applications or medical examinations. This is a much sounder way to handle your insurance than by "cashing in" your certificate for its cash

value, which is a little more than the loan value. Remember that when your financial condition is better after a few years and you have aged a little, the premiums would be higher, and in some cases your insurability could be harder to obtain and your insurance, will cost you more in the long run than if you had just made a loan equal to the loan value.

Here is a bit of personal experience with making a loan against the loan value of an insurance certificate.

When we moved from Houston to West in December 1968/January 69, it cost us nearly all our cash reserve. As soon as we got settled in West your editor's wife, Maxine, went to work at Texas State Technical Institute (TSTI) in Waco while yours truly took care of the editorial work with the Vestnik and the salary of the editor was not very large, so having to meet financial obligations and living costs being what they were then, your editor made a loan on his accumulated loan value on his certificate, and paid the 5 percent interest on the loan.

After working two years and three months at TSTI, your editor's wife came to work with yours truly in April 1971 because of the increase in clerical work and typing hand-written letters for the type-setters in the printshop. (Most of the letters were hand-written at that time and the printshop requested double-spaced and typed material for the Vestnik.)

She worked without pay from the SPJST or anyone until 1980 when your editor asked that she be reimbursed for at least part of her work. The Supreme Lodge agreed to pay her 3-day salary per week and has since that time.

It was sometime in that period when your editor repaid the loan to the Supreme Lodge, so the certificate continued uninterrupted. This was much simpler and easier than making a new application for insurance. *** Speaking of the Vestnik, there have been a number of changes made since 1969 from the old type "Hot-lead" type to Compugraphic "Offset" method to Computer and now "Laser-type" of printing (which produces much clearer type at the present time).

In 1981, the Vestnik contract was moved to Temple, and the Czech type was set by young ladies who didn't know the Czech diacritic marks and language. This was not the case until then as Brother Jerome Kopecky had been setting it until that time. Since 1984, the Vestnik has been printed by Hill County Press, Inc. Since 1980, your editor's wife has been taking care of compiling the English section with the printshop personnel while your editor took care of the Czech section and detailed work.

At this time, the editor wishes to take this opportunity to thank the printshop personnel and especially his wife for their assistance, especially the last two months since your editor's eye surgery which made the work somewhat difficult.

Wednesday, March 4, 1992—VESTNIK/3 A sales representative workshop for Continuing Education was held recently at Lodge 40, El Campo-Hilije.

SFR Jerome J. Hlavaty, along with District VI Director Matt Vanek, conducted the workshop. SFR Jerome J. Hlavaty instructed sales representatives on the many types of SPJST insurance plans available to current and prospective members according to age groups and needs. He also discussed the different target groups for insurance sales.

Although Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance,

The SPJST By-Law Committee February 21 1992

Dear Members: There has been a great amount of concern and discussion recently about the By-law Committee getting involved in areas of our society's business which some feel it should not. This has not been the case. However, we have done some research and fact-finding because of numerous complaints from our membership about things that our by-laws cannot directly address but directly relate to the operation of the SPJST. As a result of consulting with our Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors, we as a committee have some concerns about the day-to-day operation of our Society. The general consensus is that there is a breakdown in the line of communication between members of the Supreme Lodge, that is officer to officer, and directors to officers. Things are not functioning as they should. It is time that some of this information be brought out to the membership since we are a membership society. This committee and the membership expect cooperation and coordination and if it does not improve, some changes in leadership positions should be in order so we can go forward. We cannot continue to tolerate such behavior nor should we accept it.

There is no doubt that the intent and purpose of the By-law Committee probing was to further enhance the growth and progress of the SPJST. As we have discovered, our society is financially sound and has grown tremendously in monetary terms. Because of our size and status, we cannot continue to function under our present conditions. It is important for our officers to work in harmony with each other and for our directors to ensure that our by-laws are adhered to. Under no circumstances should the by-laws be ignored, something which we feel has happened in the past. There must be a constant sharing of knowledge between the departments and an open door of communication within the Supreme Lodge. By-laws cannot address this issue.

We feel that our by-laws are operable as they are only needing a few changes.

The rest is up to the elected officials you are responsible for electing.

SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status and to better serve the members. Sales workshops such as this also enable the field force to enlist the efforts of the lodge officers in assisting their sales representatives to obtain new members for their lodges.

Recommendations And/Or Change Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena January 11, 1992 To: The By-Law and Finance Committees Lodge No. 172 recommends the following financial and by-law changes: Article 4 (a)2 Note: A lodge meets its insurance goal when it achieves a total of 15% increase over a three-year period of premium income.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 4, 1992 Lodge No. 172, Pasadena also recommends the following changes to the ByLaws of SPJST: Article IV (e)5 - Is not an insurance Agent (Underwriter) selling life insurance for any life insurance company in competition with the Society.

Article 27 (a) Be an active member of this Society for at least five (5) consecutive years prior to his or her election, also have met lodge attendance requirement, same as delegate.

Reason: We believe the above is in the best interest of our Society.

On the recreational area we have recommended, to the Finance Committee, that we would like them to start with a sum of at least $25,000 since we as an organization, gave that and more to others.

The delegate requirements, we feel, need to be changed so there will be some form of incentive to the membership to help the lodge by helping the sales representatives.

Hope you will recommend a by-law to be passed on all five (5).

SPJST RECREATIONAL AND TRAINING RETREAT AREA

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio January 30,1992 To: The By-Law Committee As per Article 20 D, SPJST Lodge 133 wishes to submit the following changes to the by-laws to be considered at the XXIV General Convention which will be held in Victoria, Texas June 14-17, 1992.

ARTICLE 18: A seven-member By-law Committee is elected for the purpose of considering, arranging and recommending of motions, for amending by-laws by the succeeding convention, eliminating conflicts in the by-laws, codifying, rearranging, and having the by-laws printed.

We recommend that the By-law Committee adhere to its duties as outlined in Article 18 and refrain from interferring with the responsibility of enforcing the by-laws. Enforcing the by-laws is the responsibility of the Board of Directors (Article 43); the Financial Committee (Article 25); the Insurance Committee (Article 23); and the Publication Committee (Article 24). Too much expense is required for each committee to check over the duties of the other committees.

ARTICLE 1 J: The word "social member" means a member who could not be insured and was a social member on and before January 1, 1988 and pays his or her local lodge dues and assessments, if any, annually in advance.

CHANGE TO: The word "social member" a prospective member who is interested in visiting a lodge during its meetings and activities for the express purpose of learning about SPJST and the advantages of membership. Lodge dues may be assessed.

REASON: Our experience shows that from the 50 social members our lodge accepted during the 1970s and 80s, ninety percent became members and brought in their families and other prospective members. The other ten percent brought in new memberships from their own families and friends.

We recommend that the following articles be left intact: Article 18 Article 19 Article 20 Article 21 Article 22 Article 23 Article 24 Article 25 Article 94 Article 95 Article 96 Article 97 Article 98 The above articles were discussed at our January lodge meeting. Changes or recommendations were approved by the membership.

Rogers, Texas To: The By-Law Committee for the 1992 Supreme Lodge Convention Dear Committee Members: We submit this by-law change -Where there are lodges that have members who are qualified to be delegates, who are husband and wife, should not both be elected as delegates.

There are members who have worked faithfully for many years, could be delegates to the convention. This would give the lodges a chance to have a better representation and more families involved.

GENERAL STATEMENT: The founding fathers of our society knew they could do more as a group than individuals. They pooled their strengths and made sure to limit their weaknesses to form a fraternal society. This was the birth of what is now known as SPJST Fraternal Life.

Had these pioneers been satisfied with a status quo lifestyle, they would not have committed themselves to form the SPJST Society, organize local lodges, attend lodge meetings, build lodge halls and/or give of their time to perform fraternal acts for others.

In keeping with this tradition, we must strive to go forward; to continue to improve the quality of life in all areas and to serve ALL of our members regardless of age.

Providing this working and recreation retreat facility would continue this tradition of group unity and of working together as one to better the quality of life for ALL of our members.

This working and recreational retreat facility would serve all age groups: YOUNGSTERS: In a camp, or longer duration than those of present, they will remember their experiences fondly as they grow into adulthood.

Camp outs that will be fun for them and also educational, through the teaching of SPJST tradition and values. This would instill the needed loyalty to our society and to our nation.

YOUTH (In general): Where lasting relationships through positive fraternal activities could be cultivated while taking part in outdoor sports, tournaments, etc. This SPJST environment could give them a strong bases toward fraternalism and a consciousness that they can build their lives around and carry on to their old age.

FAMILIES: These groups would be able to enjoy quality time together, with other SPJST families, fostering ties within their own families and with others in a way only the great outdoors can bond.

RETIREES AND SENIORS: Those persons whose families are grown and/or gone. Our brethren who are looking for companionship, fellowship and that special place to get away for a weekend or a week. Often referred to as the "Gray Americans," these knowledgeable and skilled senior citizens would have the opportunity to pass on to other generations, their special wisdom, special knowledge and these special skills whereby all will benefit through workshops and/or other forms of gettogethers.

This would be a training and recreation facility that would be available in an exclusive environment free of distraction. Exclusive in that it would belong to our organization, SPJST Fraternal Life, a society that should have the vision to go forward and look to the future.

RESOLUTION: Acquisition of an SPJST Training and Recreational Retreat Area.

WHEREAS: The question of an SPJST Training and Recreational Area has been placed before three conventions, WHEREAS: This question has been defeated each time because immediate results were demanded, WHEREAS: A project of this size and nature has to be taken on a longterm step-by-step commitment and, WHEREAS: This project would insure that our society, SPJST Fraternal Life, would be committed to a continuance of its fraternal benefits.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: be set aside, each year, from the time THAT, A sum of $ of enactment, by the Supreme Lodge, in a special fund, under interest, for this project, THAT, Lodges and individual lodge members be invited and encouraged to donate to this project and, in turn, for their efforts, be ALL recognized, THAT, All donated funds be placed into the same account as those set aside by the Supreme Lodge for this project, THAT, Money accumulated in this special fund be used only for this aforesaid project and its expenses, THAT, One person from each District be elected to a standing committee that would oversee the operation of this project, THAT, This committee meet a minimum of once a year at the Supreme Lodge and any time deemed necessary, THAT, In conjunction with the standing Finance Committee, the aforesaid committee set up a system of ways to solicit funds for this project.

THAT, Land be purchased as soon as funds are available and the necessary buildings be erected, by priority, with them being brought to completion as funds are made available.

*** CHANGES TO QUALIFICATIONS OF DELEGATES AND SUBSTITUTE GENERAL STATEMENT: Our founding fathers established a convention system to govern the society with delegates to represent the membership of each lodge at these conventions.

The present system of choosing the number of delegates each lodge is to have at each convention is not only depressing but negative in nature.

Lodges are punished if they do not meet a goal.

This method is against all principals set down by the founding fathers of our society who believed in rewarding someone, not punishing them.

We must change to a reward system or we as a society will go backwards and even may cease to exist.

RESOLUTION: Changes to Articles 4 through 6 of the 1988 by-laws qualifications of delegates and substitutes.

WHEREAS: Our present system by which the designated number of delegates and substitutes each lodge is allowed is a negative one, WHEREAS: The present articles of the by-laws places a penalty on the local lodge, WHEREAS: There are some good new members who could serve as delegates, WHEREAS: This whole method of designating the number of delegates and the method by which they qualify is demoralizing to many lodges and WHEREAS: Our society needs a positive attitude to go forward and not backward.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: THAT, Each lodge be allowed one (1) delegate for the first one hundred (100) members and an additional delegate for each one hundred fifty (150) members thereafter, THAT, Each lodge that has a growth factor of ten percent (10%) over a period of three years, starting with the convention year, be allowed an additional delegate, THAT, Growth of twenty percent (20%) would allow two (2) additional delegates and so on in steps of ten percent (10%) or one (1) delegate per each ten (10%) of growth, THAT, A member who becomes active one year prior to the election of delegates be allowed to be a delegate providing the following criterion is met: 1) The member, in question, attend all meetings, 2) Takes an active part in the lodge by being on a committee, a lodge officer, etc., 3) Shows that he and/or she is doing this for the good of the lodge and not for his and/her personal gain or edification.

THAT, The lodge must show that there is no one qualified available under standard criterion to be a delegate who wishes to be one and THAT, These changes go into effect immediately upon passage.

*** GENERAL STATEMENT: The founding fathers of SPJST Fraternal Life believed in the democratic process of governing the society.

Election of Supreme Lodge officers by the convention body as a whole was deemed a necessity.

Any other method of electing and/or appointing the Supreme Lodge officers would be contrary to these beliefs.

We must remember that most of the founding fathers came to this country from Europe where they were denied the democratic process and were governed by a very oppressive government.

Some members have suggested that we go to a different form of assigning Supreme Lodge officers, which would be no better than the government many of our members left Europe for.

If we are to stay a fraternal Society, we must retain the original democratic process.

RESOLUTION: Retention of the present system of electing Supreme Lodge officers.

WHEREAS: There is a proposal to change the way our society elects its Supreme Lodge officers.

WHEREAS: This change would take the control of the society AWAY FROM ITS MEMBERSHIP and WHEREAS: The founders of our society placed the democratic process above everything else.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: THAT, Our present system of electing Supreme Lodge officers be kept, THAT, A by-law be added that would prevent any change to this system until the year of 2022 unless state and/or federal laws so deem it and THAT, This goes into effect immediately upon passage.

*** GENERAL STATEMENT: Since this organization has been charterd, the Supreme Lodge president has been the head of the society.

Any change at this time would open our society to be scrutinized by all government agencies, both federal and state.

This could cost our society its exemption status and place it on the same level as the main line insurances.

We are a fraternal organization and should not try to mimic General Motors and/or Ford Motor Company.

RESOLUTION: The ELECTED Supreme Lodge President be retained as head of the society.

WHEREAS: The president of the Supreme Lodge is duly elected by the delegates as a whole in an open session of the convention, WHEREAS: A proposed change would make an executive officer and/or head of the society of a NON-ELECTED "TITLED" officer which WAS NOT elected to this position by the delegates of the convention and WHEREAS: With this proposed change, the society would NOT be controlled by the membership through their duly elected delegates.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: THAT, The duly elected president of the Supreme Lodge be the head of the society as per the by-laws.

THAT, The chair be restored to the president at Board meetings, THAT, Where our society needs representation, the Supreme Lodge president would be the one to do so and THAT, This be placed into our by-laws and go into effect immediately upon passage.

*** GENERAL STATEMENT: When the Vestnik first became the official news organ of what is now SPJST Fraternal Life, those responsible for this, believed in a FREE press.

They knew that a press controlled by a single entity is not free and must be loyal to this entity or "MASTER." It has been suggested that the editor be hired by the Supreme Lodge.

Should this happen, the Vestnik would be no better than "Pravda" of old "Hard Line" Communist Russia.

RESOLUTION: To keep the editor of the Vestnik an elected post.

WHEREAS: It has been recommended that the ELECTED post of editor of the Vestnik be eliminated, WHEREAS: The membership would loose their input on the Vestnik, WHEREAS: The controlling body, the standing committee on publication, would also be eliminated, WHEREAS: The editor would be told what he could and could not write in his editorials as well as be Told who was allowed to have his letters printed in the Vestnik, WHEREAS: The membership has a right to know what is going on in the organization (good as well as bad) and, WHEREAS: The founders of our society placed the freedom of the press on the same level as the democratic process.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: THAT, The present system of electing the editor of the Vestnik be retained, THAT, There be no change or review of this until the year 2022 and, THAT, This goes into effect immediately upon passage.

Lodge 133, San Antonio Recommendations Of By-Laws To: SPJST By-Law Committee SPJST Lodge No. 133, San Antonio wishes to submit the following recommendations to the by-laws for consideration at the XXVI General Convention, which will be held June 14, 15, 16 and 17, 1992 at Victoria, Texas.

A. Local lodges may invite guests to their meeting and may with membership vote to sign these guests as social members of their local lodges.

REASON: In the 1970s and 80s, SPJST Lodge signed up more than forty (40) social members; of these forty social members, 95 percent of these members bought SPJST insurance or annuities. Those 5 percent who did not for health reasons or being insured on their jobs have brought in members of their families who bought SPJST insurance or annuities. There is no better way to

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, March 4, 1992 get a new member than to invite these potential members to the local lodges and let them see what benefits are offered to them when they attend lodge meetings.

B. That the Supreme Lodge collecting premiums by direct billing, collect the local dues of those members who do not have their certificates paid-up and return those local dues to the lodge treasurers as they are collected.

REASON: The local lodge in many cases spends more on postage trying to collect the local dues than they eventually collect. Other fraternals that are on direct billing are able to set their computers where they are able to do this, and there is no reason why SPJST cannot do the same.

C. That the By-law Committee which is elected for the purpose of considering, arranging and recommending of motions, for amending by-laws by the succeeding convention, eliminating conflicts in the by-laws, codifying, rearranging, and having the by-laws printed, refrain from trying to take over the job of the Finance Committee and other committees and let them do the job that they were elected to do and devote their full attention to the by-law changes that are recommended by the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Insurance Committee and Publication Committee and the Youth Club Program.

REASON: There are qualified members elected to these committees and it is impossible to do a good job by these committees with the interference from the By-law Committee. This committee is suppose to take the recommendations of these committees, Board of Directors and members' recommendations, and make a recommendation to the convention delegates and the delegates of this modern age are well enough educated to make a sensible and business decision for their members and the SPJST as a whole.

D. That the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee re-evaluate the use of the SPJST automobiles and consider buying smaller economy cars, if they are needed, and that the Board of Directors set up a budget as to what they can spend. There is a possibility that expenses can be lowered if a budget is set annually by the Board of Directors and the Finance Committee. No business can operate profitably if expenses are not controlled.

E. That the by-laws of the Publication Committee remain as they are in Articles 24, 93, 94, 95 and 96 and that the use of pictures in the Vestnik continues to be utilized by the editor. Priority should be for the membership photos, the Supreme Lodge officers and Board of Directors. Publication of non-SPJST activities should be only used when enough material is not available from SPJST members. This is SPJST members' organ, which is being used by the Supreme Lodge for communications with the membership.

Bartek Reaches Grand Age 96 Sister

Several members, officers and friends from SPJST Lodge No. 92 gathered to help Sister Albina Bartek celebrate her 96th birthday on February 2, 1992 at the River Oaks Nursing Care Center in Fort Worth. At this occasion District III Director Sid Pokladnik and wife, Justine, were also present.

On behalf of the SPJST, Brother Pokladnik recognized and thanked the honoree for her dedication and devo-

tion to the SPJST; he also presented her an appreciation certificate and a check.

Born 2 February 1896 in Cyclone, Texas, Albina M. Bartek is the daughter of the late John and Anna Stastny whose parents were from Fayette County, Texas. She had two brothers and one sister, all of whom are deceased.

Sister Albina met Joe R. Bartek in a saloon at Airville, Texas. Joe was born in Czechoslovakia. They married on 22 July 1913, and farmed for four years in Bell County.

Sister Bartek joined the SPJST in 1914. Joe and Albina were active members at Lodge No. 92. Joe was

Both of them attended SPJST conventions several times.

Joe also helped organized the Slavonic Mutal Fire Insurance (SVPS).

He passed away 31 December 1972.

Sister Albina was also active in Ladies Circle up until three years ago.

She is a member of All Saints Catholic Church and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In her active days, she always loved gardening and canned all that she grew in her garden. She was very thoughtful, when any member passed away she would be at the family's home during the funeral services to oversee that food was served.

Sister Bartek had surgery first part of 1991 and overcame that with flying colors. She was living by herself until she fell and broke her hip on 2 January 1992. Presently, she is residing at River Oaks Care Center, 2416 Northwest 18th Street in Fort Worth.

The Supreme Lodge and Lodge No. 92 members and friends wish Sister Bartek many years of good health.

II Meeting

Dear District II Members: I am sending this reminder in hopes of seeing you at our annual District II meeting to be held on Sunday, March 15, 1992. The meeting will be at Lodge No. 47, Seaton (Star Hall) in

Seaton, Texas. Registration will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the meeting starting at 2:00 p.m. This is a very important meeting for you and your district, we will be discussing the convention coming up in June along with electing officers for the district.

This year we will have a Mr. and Miss SPJST contest to represent our district at the convention, if you have any youth in your lodge who may be interested, please call the Home Office.

District II will provide a meal for those attending, Lodge 47 Seaton will be in charge of preparing the meal, all other lodge members are asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

I would also like to take this time to inform all District II delegates to the

1992 convention in Victoria that a delegates' meeting has been called.

The purpose of this meeting is to better inform ourselves about issues that will be brought to floor, to get an idea of what other delegates may have discussed, and to be the best "informed and on top of District" there. The meeting will be held at Lodge 47 Seaton on Friday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. The kitchen will be open at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who wants to have supper.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, February 9, 1992 at the Youth Center beginning at 2:00 p.m. President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order followed by youth club member, Kristen Bender, leading the members in the pledge to the flag.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed member, Annie Kartman.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of our last meeting

which were approved. The treasurer's report was dispensed with due to the absence of Tresurer Helen Zabransky.

FAC Gaye Galetka gave an interesting report.

DYC Anita Roye visited with the youth club and spoke briefly to the mother lodge. Youth Leader Jeanette Bender gave her report.

President Vahalik reminded the members of the Convention Planning Committee meeting on March 12th in Victoria. Also the District VI spring meeting will be on Sunday, March 22nd hosted by Lodge 23, Moravia.

The P/A System Committee gave a report. Youth Leader Jeanette Bender brought a system for us to try. A decision will be made at the next meeting.

Elsie Mascheck, of the Sunshine Committee, reported on the monthly social games at the rest home. Taking time to help at the social games were Elsie Mascheck, Margaret Smotek, Vicky Zak and Evelyn Holy.

The members voted to contribute to the American Heart Association and Hallettsville Fire Department.

The youth club winners in the Convention Ad Design Contest for our lodge were: 1st--Kristen Bender, 2nd-Nicholas Vahalik, 3rd--Adam Siptak.

The meeting adjourned. Valentine poems were read to the members by youth club members, Joshua and Adam Siptak; Karen, Kristen and Krystle Bender; Elizabeth and Nicholas Vahalik; Doris Matula, Jeremy Kalmus and Tucker Scott.

January, February and March birthdays were honored. Those present with birthdays were Elsie Macheck, Elizabeth Vahalik, Joe Siptak, Joshua Siptak and Tucker Scott. Lucky winner of the birthday cake was Joshua Siptak.

Lunch was served and enjoyed. The meal prayer was given by Evelyn Holy.

Door prize winners were: adult--Jeanette Bender and youth--Jeremy Kalmus. A Valentine box of candy, a project of the youth club, was won by Helen Bolom.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, March 8th at the Youth Center, beginning at 2:00 p.m. as usual.

Lodge 24, Cyclone, will be hosting its first County-wide Garage Sale on Saturday, March 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can expect to see a little of everything--antiques, collectibles, household and miscellaneous items.

Local "Straight Domino" were held February 21 at Flag Hall. The first three place teams, which will be representing Lodge 24 at the State Straight Domino Tournament at Flag Hall on March 21, were: First Place--Kenneth Marek and J.P. Chervenka; Second Place--Gary Kelarek and Larry Kelarek; and Third Place--Johnny Kelarek and Joe Andel. Congratulations fellows and good luck at state.

All Lodge 24 domino players please take note: The local "42" playoff, which will determine which teams represent our lodge at the State Tournament in Snook on April 11, will be on March 13 at Flag Hall. Games start at 7 p.m. If you'd like to sign up your team, please do so before March 11 by calling Billy Smetanka at 985-2307 or President LaVerne Cabla at 985-2354.

The country-wide sale and upcoming domino tourneys are just of two of the activities Lodge 24 has scheduled for the coming months. At the last regular meeting on February 10, members supported recommendations by the Special Events Committee to hold a barbecue on Mother's Day, May 10 and a fall political rally and picnic.

In other business, committee members delivered their reports and the minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft encouraged members to attend the District II Skating Party at Skate Haven in Temple on February 16. President Cabla then read a letter from the family of Fabian Klecka, thanking lodge members for their support during their time of loss.

Reported on the sick list at the February meeting were Elnora Surovik and Wilbert Mikeska. Mrs. Surovik has since passed away. We extend our sympathies to her family and friends.

Members celebrating February anniversaries were Carol and Johnny Chervenka, Terry and Penny Coots and Larry and Christi Coots. Members celebrating birthdays in February included Jeffrey Posvar, Adam Bruggman, Tonya Spanhel, Joan Coots, Joan Vanicek, Pam Mikeska, Gary Kelarek and Danny Baker.

Following the business, Gene Engbrock, candidate for Precinct 3 commissioner, was introduced and spoke briefly. Door prizes were won

by Patsy Baker and Gene Engbrock.

The main discussion of the meeting was the success of our Polka-Waltz Fest that was held on February 9th. We had a great turnout and everyone really enjoyed the music by the Vrazels and the Bobby Jones bands. If for some reason you had to miss this year, don't feel too left out---just mark your calendar for next year, same bands, same place--you just can't get too much of a good thing! We hope to see them all again next year.

There will be a planning meeting for the State Convention at the meeting room at Victoria Mall on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. Please try to attend this very important meeting so we can say that District VI held the best state convention ever. Come casual and light refreshments will be served.

The regular monthly meeting was held after the social games. President Rita Vanek led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silent prayer was held for our deceased and sick members.

The minutes of our meeting held on January 20 were read and approved.

Correspondence received and read included: 1) "Thank you" note from Texas Department of Human Resources for contribution of food for aged and disabled during the Christmas season.

2) A letter from President Howard Leshikar with reference to 50-year members and presentation of pins.

Congratulations to our members for this honor, namely: Albina Bablik, Sophie Mae Elias, Aldrich Hradecky, Josephine Kovar, Ernest F. Opella, Jerry Peter, Daniel J. Pustejovsky, Jesse Frank Sobotik, Milada Ann Sraila and Mary E. Stehno. The 50-year pins will be presented to our members at our Family Day on Sunday, June 28th.

4) Letter from Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska as project coordinator of SPJST local lodge workshop at Elgin, Texas on Saturday, February 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

2) FAC Dora Lee Kopecky gave us a printout of the 1992 coming events for our lodge.

Dear Members: The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m. by President Jim Locke.

We had two visitors, Melba Briggs and Andrew Gilmore.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved. She also read the names of members who will receive their 50year membership pin. There was a discussion to honor them later at one of our meetings.

Minutes of the board of trustees' meeting were read by Sister Mary A. Langlotz and approved.

Sister Lucille Cervenka gave the Entertainment Committee report for our March 15th meeting. Members are asked to bring sandwiches and committee will furnish desserts, chips and coffee; the lodge will furnish drinks.

FAC report was given by Sister Mary A. Langlotz. There were 29 members present at our February 10th social game night. Our next social game night will be March 9th at 7:00 p.m.

Bring a snack. She, then, reported on the District III spring meeting which will be at Lodge No. 66 on April 26, 1992; also the Tarok players will have to sign up for the Tarok Tournament which will be held March 7th at SPJST Lodge No. 29 in Taylor; Straight Domino Tournament on March 21st at SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, and "42" Domino Tournament at SPJST Lodge No. 9 in Snook. New members accepted were Brandy Denise McAdams, Candance Joane McAdams and Jodie Carl McAdams, Jr. Youth Leader Sister Gladys Yates reported that there were sixteen members, one visitor and seven adults present at the meeting. On April 4th

they will take care of their adopted highway project.

Cheer and Condolences report was given by Sister Jeanette Smith. Get well cards were sent to Jim Varna, Rayford Glaze, Hattie Casper, Leslie Dungan and Joe Pruitt. Sympathy card was sent to Sister George (Maurine) Trefny and family. A thank you note was read from Brother George Trefny's family.

There was a donation made by SPJST Lodge No. 66 in memory of Brother George Trefny to the Hospice Center.

A resolution of sympathy was read for departed member, Brother George Trefny.

The 50/50 game prize was won by Susan Trickett and the one-half of the pot went to Libby Parma Trust Fund.

There were two Valentine prizes of long stem red carnations for the lady and a red carnation boutonniere for the gentleman; winners were Rose Galler and Alfred Pankonien.

Door prize winner was Sister Gladys Yates.

Birthday celebrants for February were Lucille Cervenka, Evelyn Stuckly, Jane Galler, Marie Klemetchek, Amanda Neslony and Bennie Engelke.

Birthday cakes were brought by Amanda Neslony and the McAdams' children.

The beer for the meeting was donated by Brother Jim Locke, Gloria, Cindy and Randy Locke.

Notice this is a change of date: Lodge 66 will hold its April meeting on the second Sunday instead of the third Sunday, so there will be no conflict with Easter, this meeting will be on April 12th. The youth will meet at 2:00 p.m. and adults at 2:30 p.m.

This is the day our new members were initiated into our lodge for 1991 and we honored them with a dinner.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik held the swearing in ceremony. Thank you, Brother Sid. Along with District III Director Sid Pokladnik we had many important people attending our meeting, namely: State Field Representative for District III Brother Keith Gatewood from the Supreme Lodge, District III President Justine Yeager, of course, District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr was also in attendance including Sales Representatives Ben Jarma, Emil Petr, Paul Hagar and Lodge President Betty Olson, who is also a sales representative; all very, important people representing our lodge members and it was nice to see them and enjoy the fellowship.

All lodge business topics were delayed until next meeting on March 16 at 7:30 p.m.

We were reminded that March 3 at 10:00 a.m. is lodge clean up day.

March 7 -- Our dance will feature the band that has Harold Strand's son playing March 15 -- Our 82nd Anniversary; doors open at 11:30 a.m., dinner served at 12:30 p.m. (catered by Bessie's Catering) consisting of roast beef/gravy, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, salad, pastry, rolls and tea; the price of dinner is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. SPJST Lodge 84 is forming a POWER VOLLEYBALL TEAM for the state tournament to be held November 21, 1992 and would like to begin practicing immediately.

A meeting will be held on SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 1992 FROM 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. AT LODGE 84. We will determine days and times to practice, uniforms, court preparations, volleyball equipment, roster, and Rules and Regulations of SPJST Volleyball.

Lodge 84 Volleyball is open to members ages 12 and over. However, only persons over the age of 16 may actually compete. If you are under 16, remember "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT" and you'll be ready to compete when you turn 16.

At least 12 persons are needed to practice effectively, and at least 6 persons to compete. If you are interested in playing some "serious" volleyball, please attend this meeting.

News

President Jerome Ermis called the regular monthly meeting to order February 10, at 7:30 p.m. after which Flag Bearers Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, and Michelle Linney presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Mildred Holeman happily reported no deaths during the past month. A roll call revealed all officers present, and the January minutes were approved as read. Correspondence was read--and upon motion carried, ten new applicants were accepted into membership.

Two new members, George Fitzgerald and Vivian Long, were initiated. A sincere welcome to you both and we look forward to seeing you at many lodge functions. The more you put into being a member, the more you will receive and, of course, that means being enthusiastic and active.

President Ermis reported 326 plates having been served on the Anniversary Day Celebration, and thanked the members for making the celebration a success.

First Vice President Marceil Malak requested the names of those workers not appearing in the Committee Book so that tickets could be given for the Workers' Party on April 5th. We have many members who are not active committee members, but who give unselfishly of their talents and money.

The 1991 Annual Report and the January 1992 Financial Report were given by Secretary-Treasurer Shirley Stonaker after which she presented a copy of the refund check from the Supreme Lodge to President Ermis. In case you are wondering what happened to the original, Shirley ran to the bank with it the same day it arrived in her office. What a way to go, Shirley, with the interest rate lower than it has been in over 20 years. The $5 refund from the Supreme Lodge was welcomed, discussed, and members were encouraged to give their favorite sales representatives leads to sell more insurance.

Homer Alexander -- 2930 pairs of eye glasses collected to date. Donors

have come from all over the state, and these glasses are most appreciated.

AARP driver's class on April 9-10 is filled. Watch for the next class and register early.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported a busy January with the youth visiting KIKK Radio Station. With the Fat Stock Show being in Houston, what more appropriate time than now to visit our famous KIKKer Radio Station. The youth also had a bowling party where the spirit of fraternalism really went into action with the older children helping the younger ones who had never thrown a bowling ball. The March of Dimes walk-a-thon in April will find the youth walking and also asking for donations prior to the walk.

Sponsor one of our youth with a generous donation for each mile they walk for a worthy cause. Write a check -- you can deduct it from your income tax. Last year the youth were sponsored by one of the banks -- this year it is hoped that they will be wearing SPJST T-shirts, thus giving SPJST some publicity. I am sure that Barbara will have a canned speech prepared for anyone asking her or one of the children what SPJST means. The enthusiasm abounds in the Youth Club, and when you think about it, these same youth will one day be our leaders and they are getting some good training right now. We must prepare for the future -- nothings stays the same. Barbara also reminded the Moms, Dads, and Grandparents about the Easter party on April 18th.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox reported a successful January and thanked Bennie Kocich for taking over for her at the Entertainment Night Committee meeting while she was taking care of Harley in Weimar, where he decided to check out the hospital facilities. He is fine now and all is well at the Cox domain. She reported that the committee was attempting to maintain a balance between the older and younger members, and while the youth tend to stand up during country-western dances, they will be removing several tables to give them standing room in the future. She also complimented the board for having picked out such a fine piano and the membership for approving its purchase. The bands appreciate it.

Royal Warnasch called to the attention of the secretary that the minutes should be corrected to show that he and his bride, Laura Bell, donated the shotgun to District V. He didn't want to leave her out because he liked to have her cook breakfast for him in the mornings. Brother Warnasch, the correction is made, but while we are on the shotgun, I looked back in the audience and there was Dorothy Pflughaupt with the shotgun barrel in the air selling tickets. That in itself could be quite persuasive, and should put money in the till.

I really am trying to keep this article short, and will by touching only some highlights of the meetings. Don't forget the May 17 Blue Room party with Henry Tannenberger as reported by Margaret Allbritton. Social Night Committee as reported by Willie Wehring - 21 members worked 54 times in 1991, a total of 3,865 hours with 16,848 players, and out of their earnings $24,988.80 has keen donated.

The Supreme Lodge and Lodge 88, among other charities, were the recipients of this committee's generosity.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann had a short report, but it was too long because he went to the hospital the very same week. He is home now nursing his ulcer, but is well on the road to

recovery. We are glad you're home.

Your most important chore is to take care of your health, so do it. We would miss you.

Next time, I will give some other committees equal time. In the meantime, THINK CONVENTION. We have an opportunity to meet and set the pace for our Society for the next four years. As By-law Chairman, I ask that you submit only changes you think might improve the Society.

Rosalee Kostom arranged for a surprise birthday cake honoring her Valentine, Tim Kostom. Helen Hegwood requested donations for the spin wheel on Homecoming Day. Your trash may be another's treasure, so bring it in while you are thinking about it -- next meeting on March 9.

Helen also reported 122 present and welcomed guests, Vivian Fitzgerald, Ed and Ann Krpec, and Evelyn Mikeska. Refreshment donors were Edwin and Agnes Gerlich, Steve and Estelle Kelly, Henry and Adele Kite, Bennie and Stacie Kocich and Homer and Rita Alexander, also anniversary celebrants.

Door prizes were given and the meeting adjourned at 9:18 p.m.

Lodge 107, Floresville Lodge 107 held its regular monthly meeting on February 9, 1992. President Bayer called the meeting to order.

Pledge was led by Trey Bielefeld.

Minutes were read and approved as read.

Maxine Pavliska and James Pavliska are recovering from surgery and James from an eye injury accident.

All the officers were present.

President Bayer read correspondence and announced that the complimentary tickets to San Antonio's anniversary celebration had been received. In a drawing, the tickets were awarded to Robert and Cheryl Morissey.

On March 7 and 8, the lodge will have cleanup day in and around the hall if weather permits.

The members decided we would have our Easter party and honor our 50-year pin recipients on April 12th. Plans are to have our Easter egg hunt for the children at 2:00 p.m., meeting and an evening meal following; 50-year members are to be honored during the meeting.

Anton Svoboda asked for permission to plant an oak tree near the barbecue pits. Permission was granted.

New member admitted was Doriann Elizabeth Kemp. Additional insurance was purchased by Rosie Norris.

Youth leader reported 8 members, 2 guests and 7 adults were present at the meeting. Discussion on the recycling project, camp and YAD was held. District meeting will have a project from each youth club that wants to have one, and a Mr./Miss SPJST Contest.

Each family is asked to bring a dozen cooked colored eggs to the Easter meeting as well as a dish for the meal.

Next meeting will be March 8; youth club meets at 2:30 p.m. and adults at 3:30 p.m.

All meetings are held on the second Sunday of the month unless notified otherwise.

Lodge No.177, Academy The Academy Lodge 177 meeting was called to order February 12, 1992

by President Otis Beck and the pledge was recited by.the members.

All officers were present and all reports were read and approved.

Libby Bartek reported that sympathy cards were mailed to Billy Joe Moore, John Hutka family and Bill Pustka and family. Get well cards were mailed to Jean Driska, Juanita Ramm and Leo Lane.

One new member was written during the month of January which was Mark Barnes. We had 8 transfers for the month which are: Karen Bartek, Kristen Bartek, Janet Lyon, Jordan Lyon, Jessica Lyon, Linda Wagner, Courtney Wagner and Sara Wagner.

We wish to welcome these new members to our lodge. We had one visitor, Windy Beck, who is Otis and Jackie's new daughter-in-law.

The lodge will sponsor a non-alcohol dance on March 13, 1992. Everyone is invited to attend.

FAC J.C. Johnson discussed the 1992 Mr./Miss SPJST Contest and also talked with the membership about having an Easter egg hunt on April 18, 1992 for the members. The youth club and the lodge will sponsor this Easter hunt. More details will be discussed in the March meeting. J.C. appointed Barbara Wright and Bill Hutka on the FAC Committee. Birthdays for the month of February were Edgar Childers, Bobby Fritz and Jean Driska.

Jean was unable to attend due to health reasons. Happy birthday to all!

The renewal of KNCT pledge of $250.00 was approved and agreed that our lodge would call KNCT on March 3, 1992. Some of the Supreme Lodge employees are answering the telephones at KNCT on March 3 and SPJST Lodge 177 will challenge other SPJST lodges to pledge $250.00 or more.

SPJST Lodge 177, Academy was presented a Silver Metal by Bob Buckley in recognition of our lodge sponsoring the Belton Comets Soccer Team. Allen La Flamme, which is an active youth member of our lodge, went to State Playoffs and his team came in second in state. The team they played against in the State Playoff had played together for 6 to 7 years and the Comets were only organized in August 1991. Our lodge is very proud of Allen and the Comets. Contributions like these are rewarding.

Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 11, 1992. We will have a speaker from the Children's Miracle Network. All members are invited to attend.

We had a good attendance at our February meeting and had a great response to the members bringing "Finger Foods." Everyone enjoyed the food and the fellowship and decided to bring food again for the next meeting.

88 Birthday Club News

On February 12, 1992 the Birthday Club met at Lodge 88 in the dining room. The meeting room was beautiful because Royal Warnasch, Jerry Ermis and Bennie Kocich had accumulated a bunch of balloons from a rental the night before. Royal suggested they would fix up our room. We all marvelled at it because, as a rule, we don't decorate. Thanks from all of us!

Vice President Pearl Hanka opened the meeting at 11:15 a.m. since our President Lowrina Lindemann's husband was taken to the hospital that morning. We are hoping that Karl will be back home in a few days.

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes which were approved as given. Rita also read correspondence from Mike Trefell and Emmitt and Alma McNaspy. They had been very sick and now are on the mend.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the financial report. The pastry booth on our anniversary day was very profitable.

We want to thank Laura Bell Warnasch for the donation of $5.00, Estelle Kelly for 2 pounds of coffee and Ann Urbanovsky for 5 pounds of sugar and also thanks to the ladies who brought all that delicious pastry.

Our sunshine lady, Mary Kosut, gave her card report which is always very accurate. She forgets no one. She made my friend Arnold Cmajdelka very happy with a card signed by all the club members. Arnold asked me to thank everyone for the many cards and phone calls from all his friends at the lodge.

There was no old business but under new business, Rosalee Kostom made a motion, seconded by Delores Condon to have a project on Splash Day and Homecoming. It passed unanimously.

The committee will get busy now on the items to be drawn for.

Our cooks for March are Josephine Bishop, Alice Bily, Bessie Lero and Georgia Buchanan.

We don't have cooks for May and we mentioned eating out on May 6.

Wyatt's was mentioned but nothing definite.

Helen Hegwood will have a spinning wheel on Homecoming on June 7. She asked that we bring a bunch of donations. All of us have stuff we have no use for, so bring them to Helen.

Helen Hegwood also suggested that the Birthday Club Sisters go swimming this summer; that will draw a big crowd, I bet.

Edna Froehlich lost her son-in-law Rodney T. Froelich on February 11 in Cuero, Texas. Johnnie Bily, oldest son of Alice and Miro Bily, had an open heart surgery and is doing fine; he's already at home. Birdie Pech is still in Polly Ryan Hospital in Richmond.

Gladys Pulley had serious surgery February 12. We hope and pray for these dear people.

Delores Condon had a cute reading which we all enjoyed.

President Lowrina Lindemann donated a candy Valentine which was won by Virginia Hale. The Calcutta

was won by Margaret Spahr and Marie Pokluda.

Birthday Club Sisters who had a birthday in February are Josephine Bishop, Ann Hoffman, Martha Walla, Mary Johnson--91 years and Frances Dvorak (honorary member)--92 years.

I received such a sweet letter from Frances.

We sang "Happy Birthday" and after the Table Blessing by Mary Kosut, we ate a delicious meal prepared by Willie Mae Ermis, Margaret Bohac, Bessie Dewer and Josephine Buri.

Vystehovalci ze Zadvefic a okoli, kteli opustili svou vlast v dubnu 1855 se v Texasu vet ginou usazovali v okrese Austin nebo v okrese Harris (rodina Krajeova) Ci Washington (rodina Fr. Sebesty ze Zadvelic C.p.3). Sveclei o torn napfiklad soupisy obyvatelstva v Texasu v roce 1860, tzv. Census records "/.

Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
