Members are once again reminded of the SPJST standing committees' forthcoming meetings, all held at the Supreme Lodge building in Temple, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Our SPJST Society has gone through quite a number of changes in its 95 years of existence, since being chartered in 1897, especially within the last 50 years.

In the 1948 Convention (the first SPJST Convention your editor attended after serving 5 years in World War II), we had an inactive president, Brother C. H. Chernosky and an executive or active vice president, Brother Edward L. Marek, a secretary, a treasurer and a financial secretary.

During that convention, there were some discrepancies. There were questions about oil leases and real estate investments. From that time, there have been additional changes for our Society to stay abreast with times and changes made in insurance nationwide and statewide. All have had their effect on our SPJST; however, this Society has been a society organized with local lodges composed of officers and members throughout the state, which is one of the main requirements of being a fraternal benefit society, and, of course, it is just about as democratic as can be .by the membership having a voice in the organization's affairs through their delegates at conventions, which is as it should be. Otherwise, we would be just an "old-line legal reserve insurance company," and we members would be just a "number" on their roster of insured individuals.

It seems as though before every convention, there are certain rumors that come up (some evidently planted and some, very likely, just rumors which, of course, occupy some time in our members' thoughts, including our delegates' time. However, most of these should not take too much of our time unless they sound realistic and progressive.

Recently, an idea was sent out to combine the legal adviser and secretary/treasurer department under a department headed by a lawyer who knew law, real estate and investments, all at the same time.

Brothers and Sisters: Just ask Brothers Leonard Mikeska and Sidney Kacir about how much time these three departments take and everyone will realize how difficult that would be for one individual to do.

Another "idea" reached your writer that the offices of president and vice president should be combined; well it seems as though that both officers have enough to do if they follow our SPJST By-laws.

Our president has his hands full and our vice president has enough to do, especially since our insurance sales need to be improved; time has shown that we have to dwell a little harder in the work of our insurance sales.

Let us not try any "quick fixes" in the organization of our Supreme Lodge which may do more harm than good to benefit our Society's future!

Surviving family conflict. Conflict is an unavoidable part of family life.

Conflict is never pleasant, but it is not something to be overly concerned about. It is normal and it can be a healthy part of family life if it is used to help family members learn to manage conflict and to be aware of other's views.

Conflict is not the same thing as a fight or an argument. A conflict is simply a difference of opinion between people that creates a problem to be solved. A fight is a personal attack; its purpose is not to solve problems but to vent feelings. Whether a conflict becomes a fight depends on how it is handled.

There are constructive ways of dealing with conflict which lead to problem solving. Learning these skills can make family conflict a good deal less trying and improve the family atmosphere considerably.

First, pick a time and place to deal with conflict. Avoid trying to deal with conflict during "hassle times" or when people are tired, tense, or preoccupied.

Second, use communication skills to help resolve conflicts. When families listen well, describe their feelings clearly, and ask clarifying questions, they are better able to solve problems.

Finally, know which conflicts to avoid. There are some family conflicts that cannot be resolved even with the most sensitive handling.

The thing that strong families have going for them is not that they do not disagree, but that they know how to make up. Developing patterns of reconciliation is an important step in building family strengths.

A conflict is really no more than a problem to be solved. The goal is to solve the problem. Strong families keep this goal in mind while they deal with conflict. *** What is a strong family? Strong families do not necessarily fit the conventional picture of the "good family," or one that embodies stability, respectability, and achievement. Family strengths do not develop solely as a result of "trouble free" successes. Most families, if you look closely, are getting stronger as a result of learning to deal with challenges, crises, and conflicts.

The "super" family, which is always "on the go," upbeat and cheerful, presents another image of family life. This family, like the old-fashioned "good family," may be hollow on the inside.

Overscheduled and overcommitted, they may have little time for genuine communication or affirmation.

Media also furnishes us with unreal. istic expectations about family life.

Some shows present family models with strengths that border on perfection. They never loose their cool, and they handle all situations with humor and wisdom, making us feel terribly guilty.

Long ago, family health professionals identified characteristics of strong families which fit into three broad categories: communication, respect and values.

A strong family has strong communication skills: Its members know how to talk and listen to each other. In a strong family, members may not always agree, but there is deep respect for each other. A strong family has deeply held values, which shape both their internal structure and their relationships with the outside world.

It is significant to note that these three core traits have little to do with wealth, prestige, or success -- all the traditional measures of a "good family."

While the older members played games, LeAnn Pruski and Valerie Popp struck up a friendship.

These pictures from the District VII fall meeting are late in appearing because they were lost by the developing studio. However, they have finally been located and I would like to share some of the highlights of our district social. I think all the members who attended would agree they had a great afternoon playing dominoes, bunco or horseshoes.

We hope everyone will plan to attend the District VII spring meeting Sunday, April 5, 1992 in New Braunfels.

Dear Members: Our lodge held its first meeting of the new year on Sunday, January 12, 1992 in the Youth Center at 2:00 p.m.

President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order followed by the pledge to the flag led by Flag Bearer Doris Matula.

Janell Chudej read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Wylie B. Jansky.

Our guests were District VI Director Matt Vanek, wife Henrietta and grandson, Christopher Vanek. We enjoyed their visit.

It was announced that Doris Matula, member of the youth club was appointed flag bearer.

Director Vanek installed the officers for 1992 and then congratulated each one.

The meeting continued with Correspondence Secretary Erwin Holy reading the minutes of the November and December meetings, which were approved. Treasurer Helen Zabransky and FAC Gaye Galetka also made their reports.

Margaret Smotek told the members that the monthly social games at Stevens Convalescent Center is going well and enjoyed very much by the residents. January helpers were Elsie Mascheck, Mary Matula, Vicky Zak and Evelyn Holy.

Youth Leader Jeanette Bender reported she is looking forward to working with the youth club and their parents. She related some of her ideas and that she is always open for suggestions.

It was reported that at the District VI fall meeting Mary Matula won first place in the kolache contest and Annie Vahalik second place. It was also announced that the District VI spring meeting will be held on Sunday, March 22 at the Moravia dining hall

Director Vanek spoke to the members including bringing them up-todate on the plans for the state convention to be held in Victoria.

It was decided that the mother lodge, instead of the youth club, be in charge of the door prizes. FAC Gaye Galetka agreed to take charge of the door prizes.

Youth Leader Jeanette Bender asked if the members would consider a PA system to be used by both the mother lodge and youth club. A discussion followed. A committee of Gaye Galetka, Jeanette Bender and Patsy Zabransky were named to check into this matter.

President Vahalik and Vice President Gaye Galetka named the following committees for the coming year: Resolution: Gaynell Chudej, Vicky Zak and Viola Holly Audit: Hilmer Galetka, Mary Matula and Elsie Mascheck Refreshments: Evelyn Holy and Gaynell Chudej Sunshine: Margaret Smotek and Elsie Mascheck Election of delegates to the state convention was held. Dime Box Dear Members and Friends: On January 16, 1992 fourteen members of Lodge 13 met at the SPJST Hall in Dime Box. Due to the absence of our president, Vice President Mildred Horak called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. and led us in reciting the pledge to our flag.

Roll call of officers and trustees revealed ten were present and five absent.

Sister Rackel read the December meeting minutes. Sister Kostelka gave the treasurer's report. All reports were accepted as read.

A letter from Supreme Lodge, explaining our premium refund check, was read by Sister Rackel. A letter regarding the Mr. or Miss SPJST contest was also read.

By carried motion, a new carpet will be installed in the bar and on the stage, and a vinyl floor in the kitchen area.

Several other matters of business were discussed and committees appointed to take care of them.

The hall is still looking for someone interested in taking care of the aluminum cans, etc.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 16. Hope to see you there.

Lodge 32 met on January 8th with outgoing President Mike Ahlstrom calling the meeting to order. He immediately turned the meeting over to 1992 President Franklin, Elles. President opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence for our departed members and roll call of officers.

Minutes of the December meeting were read and approved and correspondence was read.

Members are encouraged to bring their 1991 FAC reports to the February meeting.

Jarmilla Obermiller, Vlasta Svoboda and Lois Elles will serve on the Audit Committee. They will be reviewing the books before the next meeting. Our longtime Treasurer Ella Arnold always does such a good job in keeping records, this certainly makes it easier for the committee. We're glad Ella is getting around so well after her hip surgery.

Our lodge will meet again on February 12th. We hope to see you then.

Before our next meeting, we will be having our Polka-Waltz Battle Dance so be sure to make plans for Sunday, February 9th. We will be at Inez Hall from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the VRAZEL POLKA BAND and BOBBY JONES CZECH BAND; $5 per person and the snack bar will be open. We're wanting you to be there to join in the fun!

Members are asked to bring a cake, cookies, bars, kolaches, etc., to sell at the Polka Fest. The desserts were a hit last year and we want to have plenty this year. Thanks!

"Now Is The Time" At Lodge 24, Cyclone Dear Members: Now is the time to establish a new spirit of fraternalism and community involvement at Lodge 24. This energetic "can do" attitude was reflected in President LaVerne Cabla's message to lodge members at our January 13 meeting.

According to President Cabla, two of the main objectives for Lodge 24 in 1992 will be to increase the involvement of members of all ages and protect the financial integrity of our lodge. In line with these goals, a committee was organized to generate new ideas for community activities and fund-raising events. The committee, which includes President and Jerry Cabla, Shirley Ascraft, Wilbert Mikeska, Brian and Joan Vanicek, David Vanicek and Louise Zavodny, will make recommendations for 1992 events at the February meeting.

We were pleased to have in attendance at this meeting Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. Brother

Leshikar led a discussion on a number of timely issues and topics affecting SPJST--most notably the upcoming convention, scholarship drive and forthcoming premium refunds. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining an active lodge and previewed the schedule for upcoming statewide fraternal activities.

Following the reading and approval of the monthly reports by committee chairmen, Brother Leshikar delivered the oath of office to the 1992 lodge officers and board of trustees.

Celebrating birthdays in the month of January were Steve Bruggman, Shelly Gerick, Joe Haisler, Sydonia Skrabanek, Brian Vanicek and Tony Williams. On the sick list were Carol Chervenka and Marilyn Gerza. We wish them a speedy recovery. Door prizes were won by Louise Zavodny and Milton Zavodny.

The minutes of the meeting held December 8th were approved.

Correspondence was received and read: 1. Letters from SL Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas with reference to refunds to our lodge for the year 1991.

2. "Thank you" notes from Memorial Home Health-Hospice; FAC Dora Lee Kopecky and Memorial Hospital, El Campo for $200.00 contribution.

3. New Insurance/Annuities and Termination/Lapses for months of November and December 1991.

FAC Dora Lee Kopecky presented schedule of dates for the year. Her schedule was accepted by the members.

No other reports were received from the officers.

President Rita Vanek announced District VI convention meetings are scheduled on March 12th and May 21st. District VI spring meeting is in Moravia on March 22, 1992.

On motion, the meeting adjourned with Bennie Reck winning the door prize.

Dear Members: The first lodge meeting of 1992 was held Sunday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m.

by President Jim Locke who called the meeting to order.

Flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Dillion Locke. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Alicia Neslony and SPJST Youth Club Pledge by Justin Engelke. Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased member Marvin R. Volcik. May he rest in peace.

Roll call of officers by Sister Jeanette Smith showed all were present.

We had two visitors Andrew Gilmore and Joe Sulak.

Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved. She also read a thank you note from SYD Joni Lange and family.

Sister Darlene Engelke read a thank you note from Arline Wright. She also read a note from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for donation to the scholarship fund and the Czech Chair for CEFT. Minutes of the board of trustees' meeting were read by Sister Mary A. Langlotz and approved.

Sister Lucille Cervenka gave the Entertainment Committee report for our February 16 meeting. Members are asked to bring meat casserole and the committee will provide desserts, salads and coffee, the lodge will furnish drinks.

FAC report was given by Sister Mary Langlotz. There were 23 present at our January 13 social game night. Our next social game night will be February 10 at 7:00 p.m. Bring a snack.

New members accepted were Dokota James Yates and Tanner Wayne Guidroz.

The youth club report was given by Youth Leader Gladys Yates. There were 15 youth members, 3 new members and 6 adults. They will have a Valentine party and dance February 21 and will have a cake walk February 29th. They will make name cards for the Moody Nursing Center. They donated their leftover Christmas bags to Meals-on-Wheels.

Cheer and condolence report was given by Jeanette Smith. Get well cards were sent to Regina Adamcik, Jim Locke, Otto Matus, Margaret Ludwig, Frank Burns, Barbara Stanislav and Georgia Pavlicek. Sympathy cards were sent to Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hensel, Mrs. Marvin Volcik and family, Raymond Volcik, Eleanora Volcik and Rayford Glage. They also delivered fruit baskets to the following: James and Georgia Pavlicek, Frank and Philomena Miller, Jim and Mary Vrana, Marie Brady, Lillian Traywick and Evelyn, Rose and Lillian Parma, Annie Hanus, Willie and Regina Adamcik, Clara Kutni, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kasper, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bush and Minnie Narovec. She also read thank you notes from Clara Kutni, Willie and Regina Adamcik, Frank and Philomena Miller.

There was a donation to Libby Parma Trust Fund by Irene Mueller, Sophie Leshikar and Gloria Locke, also by SPJST in memory of Marvin Volcik.

A resolution of sympathy was read for departed member Marvin R. Volcik.

The Auditing Committee Chairman Johnnie Gaidusek reported that all the books were in good shape.

Sister Emma Ceska gave her report on bookkeeper's books.

Sister Darlene Engelke gave the reports on the lodge books.

Sister Evelyn Stuckly asked if they could have the 50/50 games and they would give one-half of the pot to the Libby Parma Trust Fund.

Sister Mary A. Langlotz presented a check from the Supreme Lodge to Lodge 66's Volleyball Team and the check was accepted by Evelyn Seith, which will be used by their players.

Brother Geo. Panting reported on the 1992 rules for Mr. and Miss SPJST contest.

Door prize winner was Sister Irene Mueller. Birthday celebrants for January are Justin Engelke, Hilma Macha, Libby Parma, Irene Schiemenz and Frank Kofnovec. Birthday cakes were brought by Jammie Trickett and Justin Engelke.

The beer was donated for the meeting by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schiemenz in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary and Mrs. Schiemenz's birthday.

Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 79 held its first meeting with me, Virginia Rebecek, as its new youth leader on January 22, 1992. We had a fair attendance and hope to have-more at our future meetings.

After we recited the Pledge of Allegiance, we stood in silence for our deceased members.

We discussed the T-shirt design contest and getting projects ready for YAD.

After our meeting ended we watched a video and popped popcorn.

Lodge

Lodge No. 81 held its first regular monthly meeting of the year on Sunday, January 19, 1992. At 12:00 noon we enjoyed baked ham and sausage furnished by the lodge and a variety of vegetables, salads and desserts brought by the members. Our thanks to all the sisters who prepared and brought the good food. Thanks also to Sister Mary Werner for baking and bringing the ham and sausage. Twenty-seven members and guests were present.

The business meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by President Adolph Macha. Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag led by Sister Elsie Brdecka, we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed member Frances Rehak. We extend sincere sympathy to her family.

President Macha extended greetings to our two guests, District V Director Louis Hanus and District V Field Representative Helen Hegwood. It was also good to see Sister Rosalie Pieper back with us.

Minutes of the December 1991 meeting were read by Secretary Werner and approved. Correspondence received and read by the secretary included letters of thanks for monetary donations to the March of Dimes, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, the American Cancer Society, Needville Meals for Senior Citizens, Fort Bend County Women's Center and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Other correspondence included a note of thanks from Harvey Marx, administrator of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II, for the apples and oranges donated at Christmas to the residents. A friendly letter to the secretary from Sister Lydia Sabrsula was also shared with members.

Secretary Werner presented the financial secretary's report and in the absence of Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall, she read the treasurer's report. All reports were approved.

Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel reported on upcoming events, taxes paid in 1991, inventory of taxable property, December income and expenses, and proposed new hall rental rates. Members appreciate your effort in preparing this lengthy and all-inclusive report.

Brother Walzel also read three letters received by the Special Fund. They were from Concerned Citizens Against Pollution (CCAP), Needville High School Project Graduation, and the Needville Little League Baseball Association. After discussion members voted to make a monetary donation to Project Graduation and to again sponsor a boy's baseball team.

Under unfinished business members discussed the new hall rental fees. A motion was made and the new schedule of rental fees was approved.

Insurance policies were issued to five new members. They are Corey Lane Orchard, James Grudziecki, Cody Allen Grudziecki, Jo Ann Fabrygel and Jerry Fabrygel, Sr. We welcome you to Lodge No. 81 and hope you will be attending some of the meetings. Young James Grudziecki was present to receive his policy in person.

President Macha reminded us of the fraternal activities (FAC) workshop to be held at Lodge No. 81 on February 10 at 6:30 p.m. This workshop is open

to members.

Director Hanus reminded delegates to make every effort to attend the preconvention meetings to be held before the June convention. Our delegates appreciate his help in securing lodging at the convention.

Sister Helen Hegwood, District V field representative, brought us good news in the form of a cash award to Juanita Todd of Lodge No. 81 for being top sales representative for the fourth quarter. Congratulations, Juanita!

Sister Hegwood told us that 1991 was a good year for sales and especially a fine year for sales in District V. Every individual member of the lodge can help SPJST grow by informing our lodges' sales representatives of possible new members to contact.

Members and friends mourn the loss of our brother, Thomas C. Kuykendall, who died on January 19, 1992 following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife Willie Mae Kuykendall; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas C. Kuykendall and Rhonda; two daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Audie Wright, Yvonne and Rodney Wrobliski. Surviving grand-children are Audie, Derek, Caleb and Jacob Wright and Laura Beth Wrobliski.

Thomas Kuykendall is also survived by a brother, sister, several aunts, nieces and nephews. He had served in both World War II and the Korean War. Funeral services for Thomas Kuykendall were held January 22 at First Presbyterian Church in Rosenberg. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.

To you, Willie Mae and family, the members of Lodge No. 81 extend our heartfelt sympathy and may Thomas have eternal peace in His heavenly home.

Some of our members celebrating recent December and January birthdays were Valerie Kramer, Alford Taylor, Vincent Joe Newman, Annie Horelica, Cheryl Newman and Jeanette Newman.

Congratulations to Adolph and Delores Macha on the birth of their first grandchild. Master Zachary Sullivan was born to Shelly and William Sullivan on December 24, 1991. Maternal great-grandmother is Selma Bednarek, all reside in Needville.

Victor and Mary Werner became great-grandparents again with the recent arrival of Lisa Renee Skopik born to August and Christy Skopik of Sealy.

Members of Lodge No. 81 doing excellent work at college are John Petrusek and Kevin Kusy at Wharton County Junior College.

Sheryl Macha, a senior student at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, has been named to the President's Honor Roll for maintaining a perfect 4.0 average. The daughter of the Adolph Machas, she is majoring in sociology and psychology.

Young members of Lodge No. 81 attending public schools in Rosenberg and Needville have just completed the first semester. In my next letter, we will report on their scholastic achievements.

Lodge No. 81 has received a letter from Amy Klinkovsky, one of our scholarship recipients. A freshman, Amy is maintaining a good average at Texas A&M University.

Another scholarship recipient, Brady Blasdel, has been named to the Texas Lutheran College Scholars Program in Seguin. Brady is a sophomore student majoring in psychology.

News

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 88 was called to order at 7:30 p.m. January 13,

by President Jerry Ermis. Flag Bearers Darlene Migl, Marlene Migl, and Michelle Linney presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Mildred Holeman reported the deaths of Milton C. Marek, Mary F. Schenburn, Della Kadlecek, Emma Jarisch, and Helen Hudgins during the past month. President Ermis spoke briefly on the contributions the deceased members had made to the lodge, after which the members stood for a moment of silence in their memory. A roll call revealed all officers present. The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was read--and upon motion carried, six new applicants were accepted into membership.

President Ermis announced initiation of new members next month and urged all members who had not been initiated to attend. He then reported the names of committees appointed for 1992, and all were approved. According to the Rules and Regulations, two members must be elected from the floor. Tillie Helmcamp and Doris Knapick were nominated and elected by acclamation.

President Ermis urged cooperation and attendance for the February 9th Anniversary Day, and called on Executive Board meeting for Wednesday.

FAC Homer Alexander reported 2930 pairs of eyeglasses collected to date. The next AARP Driver's Class will be held at the lodge April 9-10.

You had better register early because the class is limited.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney reported a net profit of $4,004.77 for the youth from the Thursday nights' sales, but much of the success was attributed to goodies donated over the year by Ed and Ellen Miculka, Helen Kubicek, Ann Bacica, Betty Theiss, Mike and Kathy Trefel, Margie Anders, Naomi Spencer, and John and Tina Ondrasek.

The youth donated $718.54 to the

Scholarship Fund as a result of can sales. Tokens of appreciation were given to Tim and Rosalee Kostom and Louis Hanus, who always gave a helping hand and were at the lodge when she could not be. They sacked the cans, took them home, and Louis borrowed a truck and hauled them to the sale.

A plea was made by Gene Barcak for members who had helped Sister Vala in the kitchen to please come forward and help again. They were trying to fill some "big shoes" to replace Sister Annie who is now ill. Bless you, Annie; we thank you for all your hard work over the years and we are wishing you well.

Social Night Committee Chairman Wehring reported a nice profit for his committee's 55 work days the past year. A weekly commitment of a faithful few to work every Thursday takes dedication, and many have been on this committee since its inception in 1962.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann reported the board had approved a $1,000 contribution to the Supreme Lodge Scholarship Fund and $3,000 to Lodge 88's Scholarship Fund, both donations emanating from the Social Night Committee. He also moved that Annie Vala be made an Honorary Board Member. Motion was seconded

by Mildred Holeman and unanimously carried. Board Member Tim Kostom discussed the purchase of a piano from Gil Baca's Piano Shop. Motion carried.

Scholarship Committee Chairman Josephine Pflughaupt reported having receiving four applications and suggested that if all four applicants qualify, that we give four scholarships.

Gene Barcak announced the Choral Club will be rehearsing again on the 21st and Tim Kostom, for Dramatic Club President Naomi Spencer, reported a variety program was scheduled in September. They are looking for talent, so this may be your opportunity. Try it--you will like it. NEWS FLASH: New officers for the Choral Group are President Gene Barcak, Secretary Evelyn Walla, Treasurer Rosalee Kostom and, of course, the director is none other than the capable Tim Kostom.

It is amazing how many hours are volunteered as was reported by Mary Kosut, but that is really what fraternalism is all about. Good members concerned and working for others.

New officers for the Birthday Club are President Lowrina Lindemann, Vice President Pearl Hanka, Secretary Rita Alexander, Treasurer Lillie Spies, Sunshine Lady Mary Kosut. Telephone Committee consists of Bessie Dewer, Juanita Simons, Margaret Bohac and Evelyn Mikolas.

Ed Miculka for the Men's Club announced a work day on Wednesday, January 14, after a well deserved rest in December. All men are welcome to join this fun-loving, working, non-paid committee. It is all done in the name of fraternalism.

The membership was pleased with District Director Louis Hanus' report that the Supreme Lodge ended 1991 with the largest gain in its history. He also reminisced a 1976 program honoring Ernest Hanka, Ed Kadlecek, Rudy Sefcik, Tim Kostom, Alfred Hilsher, and Tillie Helmcamp, three of whom are now deceased, but without members such as these we surely would not be what we are today.

District President Evelyn Mikeska announced a delegates' meeting on January 20.

to yours truly for the most applications written in December and recognized the 1991 Sales Representatives: Franklin Bravenec, Mildred Holeman, and Rosie Tumis; Lodge 88's top Sales Representatives are Franklin Bravenec, Mildred Holeman, Pearl Hanka, Edna Wehring, and Tillie Helmcamp. She also led us in singing "Happy Birthday" to the January celebrants and recognized Martin and Shirley Narendorff as the only couple celebrating an anniversary. She reported 116 present and one visitor.

Door prizes were drawn and the meeting adjourned at 9:57 p.m.

Refreshments are good and the fellowship is better. See you at the next meeting on February 10.

Dear Readers: A belated New Year's wish to everyone!

Our Christmas program and party on December 8th in conjunction with Sokol, WFLA No. 402, and RVOS No. 135 was a tremendous success. It was our first Christmas in the new Sokol Activity Center in Ennis.

The year 1992 promises to be a busy one. Everyone is preparing for the National Polka Festival, May 2nd and 3rd. The dates will be here soon. In the immediate future, we have the Annual Sokol Exhibition on Sunday, February 9th. The day will begin with dinner at noon, gymnasts group picture at 1:00 p.m., and the program at 1:30 p.m., a dance will follow. A donation of $2.00 will cover the program and dance.

During the program, we will be recognizing members for length of service in 5 year increments, i.e. -- those who have reached 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years in 1992. The noon meal will be $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for children.

A volleyball tournament with other Sokol units will be held on Saturday, February 8th. There will be no admisstion charge.

Sokols and friends of Sokols are invited to attend both events.

Hlahol Dramatic Club Notes

By Naomi K. Spencer, President The annual meeting of the Hlahol Dramatic Club, Houston, was held on the evening of January 7th.

This meeting was called specifically for the purpose of electing officers for the year 1992, but I also wanted the members present to know that not only was their presence appreciated but to again thank one and all for their efforts and time which they contributed to last year's TALENT SHOW of the YEAR. The comments and discussions which followed certainly brought out that the program was viewed very favorably.

This was quite gratifying and substantiated the feeling that the club could well continue. However, I regret to say that it is hardly possible to depend and expect Czech stage plays or operettas any more. This is understandable because rarely do we have an audience where the Czechs out-number the usual mixed crowd, many of which do not speak or understand Czech. However, should it ever come up that a Czech play is possible, you may rest assured that it will be given due consideration.

Further, I requested Brother Bill Malina to take over the processing of elections. He opened with nominations for the president. Sister Estelle Kelly nominated the writer, and no further nominations were made, and I accepted. Nomination for vice president followed. It was brought out that Sister Tillie Helmcamp served so well in 1991, and since there were no further nominations for this office, and since Sister Tillie was not present, it was left to me to ask her to assume this responsibility for the coming year.

I took it upon myself to call Sister Tillie the following day to advise her of the situation, and she very graciously accepted the office. She is capable in many categories pertaining to activities of the lodge, and I am pleased and grateful that she will take over the office of vice president.

The office of secretary remains my responsibility and I hope I shall be able to serve in this capacity again. So far, as nominations for director were concerned, it was decided to work this out when it becomes an issue; and I was assured of whole-hearted cooperation and assistance.

Sister Estelle Kelly was again nominated on the Telephone Committee.

She accepted, and we are happy about that.

With the help of Sister Helmcamp, it was decided to leave PUBLICITY with the president.

After a discussion, the date of August 30th is reserved for the next performance. In the meantime, all members of the lodge are asked to solicit talents and ideas. Of course, I would like to be advised of such developments.

Let's look forward to another FUN SHOW!

The first person to suggest carving giant faces into the side of Mount Rush-. more was the State Historian of South Dakota. He wanted the faces to be of three famous frontiersmen who helped open the West to settlers: Jim Bridger, John Colter, and Kit Carson.

Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor, suggested that the faces be of U.S. Presidents, and in 1927 work began on Mount Rushmore. It was completed in 1941.

A Schedule Of District II Activities Dear District II Members, Here's hoping each of you had wonderful holidays. It is so hard to believe we are in the second month of 1992.

The busy time of the year has begun.

On Sunday, February 16, 1992 will be the Annual District II Skating Party. It will once again be held at Temple's Skate Haven, 814 North 31st Street. The time will be from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. I hope each of you make plans to attend. Each year our attendance grows and we always have a great time. I know I'm looking forward to seeing all of you again. Remember, all District II members are invited, young and old and you may bring a friend. Let's hope your friend will join us as a member of SPJST. Door prizes will be given.

Youth Members: Please make plans to attend the District II spring meeting on Sunday, March 15 at Lodge 47, Seaton. This is a very special meeting with several new activities on the agenda.

Following the adult meeting, youth club members will meet briefly to begin a District Youth Club. We will have election of officers using the same format as the adults. You must be in attendance to be elected to an office. The elected officers will meet several times throughout the year to help plan district activities and camp.

A District Youth Club is rather new to District II, so we will be open for any ideas and suggestions.

On March 15 is also another big event which will take place. It will be election of Mr./Miss SPJST for District II. The contest rules are listed in an adjoining article. To date, I have received two contestant entries. This is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to stay involved with the SPJST. Please send in your autobiography to me as soon as possible. Your youth leaders should have received the rules and autobiographies from Supreme Lodge. If you need more, please contact me at (817) 774-8488.

Another special event on this day will be the "Parade of Little Mr./Miss SPJST." The age for this event is at least 3 years and no older than 5 as of

June 1, 1992. There will be no competition in this event. Each contestant is asked to dress in Sunday clothes (long dresses are optional). Each youth will be introduced and asked a simple question.

Please send me the autobiography (same as for Mr./Miss SPJST) using the upper portion along with special interest, etc. THE DEADLINE for entries for Mr./Miss SPJST and Little Mr./Miss SPJST is FEBRUARY 29.

Please make plans to attend the spring meeting on Sunday, March 15 at Seaton. You can see this meeting will be filled with so many neat activities. To all contestants: Thank you and best of luck.

If any youth are interested in dancing or learning the Beseda, please contact me as soon as possible and we will try to form groups prior to YAD. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at each of the above-mentioned activities.

We went to the Livestock Show Parade in Robstown -- January 11 Then we we attended the Livestock Show -- January 17.

On cool days we usually go to the movies and eat out or just have a treat.

When springtime comes, we will take part in outdoor activities. In March, the Replicas of Columbus' ships will be making one week stop here in Corpus Christi. It will be the first stop in Texas on the way from Porta Rico.

The Lady Lex (The U.S.S. Lexington) will be a floating museum which was awarded to Corpus Christi on January 23, 1992. The Lexington will be towed from Pensacola, Florida to Naval Station Ingleside, where it will remain until transfer of the vessel's ownership to the city of Corpus Christi. The carrier, nicknamed the "Blue Ghost," is planned to become a fixture on the shoreline of Corpus Christi Beach near the Texas State Aquarium and could open in July.

This fall, a group of volunteer workers and material donated a "Kid's Place" was built at Cole Park. This especially was built for the children's outdoor entertainment. I'm sure that this area will be busy at all times.

The youth clubbers are looking forward to the upcoming activities. Many holidays are coming, and that means, getting ready with projects.

On January 8, 1992 Lodge 88 Youth Club held a meeting. President Lindsey Michalak opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

There were eighteen members, one guest and four adults present. We joined our voices together to recite the SPJST Youth Club Pledge. Our guest was Michalla Moore, age 16, who attends Norwest Academy.

Our treasurer's report for December was an income of $561.75, expense of $192.04 and a profit of $369.71. For the total year of 1991 we earned $7,530.07, spent $3,523.20 and made a profit of $4,004.77. Congratulations to all the youth who made that possible and keep up the good work.

In February is our newest business of the year--Lodge 88 Anniversary on February 9th.

January birthdays were for Amanda Havemann (3rd), Jill Mattiza (12th), Jeanette Dames (23rd) and. Brian Havemann (24th). Happy birthday to those members.

Dear Youth Club Members, Our last meeting was held on Sunday, January 12th. We would like to thank Gaynelle Chudej and Evelyn Holy for being great youth leaders for many years. They both retired from the youth club since their children are all grown and are no longer participating.

We would like to welcome our two new leaders. My mother, Jeanette Bender, is the new youth leader and her assistant is Susan Siptak. Welcome to both of you!

At our meeting we exchanged ideas on what we would like to do in the coming year. We will continue this at our next meeting. We voted to place an ad in the XXVI Convention Brochure.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 9 at the Hallettsville Youth Center. The meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. Each of us are to bring our favorite Valentine poem and we will present a program to the mother lodge. We will also be selling tickets for a Valentine candy heart.

Remember to bring your ideas for entertainment at the District VI spring meeting in Moravia on March 22, and real soon it will be time for YAD. Hope to see you all at the February meeting.

He also was a member over 50 years of Lodge Velehrad No. 19 and before his death was elected vice president. He enjoyed hunting and farming, working with cattle and

socializing with friends and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie; one stepson, Alphonse Savadina of Conroe; one step-granddaughter who lives in Huntsville; one step-grandson of Conroe and one step-great-granddaughter of Huntsville. He is also survived by a sister, Ella Lichnovsky of Velehrad and a brother, James Kahanek of New York.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Kristinik.

Brother Tomasek died Tuesday in a Temple nursing home.

Brother Tomasek was born in Buckbolts to Karl and Rosa Ruzicka Tomasek and had been a resident of Bell County most of his life. Prior to his retirement, he farmed in the Zabcikville and Red Ranger communities for several years. He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church. He was a former member of the North Elm school board and was a a recipient of a 50-year SPJST pin.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Tomasek, and a stillborn infant.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Zabcik Tomasek of Temple; , two sons, Charlie Lee Tomasek of Temple and Allan R. Tomasek of Granger; a daughter, Ruth Nell Carter of Amarillo; six grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren.

She grew up in Stamford, Texas and married Frank Kutach on April 5, 1915. They farmed near Stamford in the Avoca community for several years. They moved to Hillsboro in 1964. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1970. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Hajek and Ella Mazur; and a brother, Jimmie Muehlstein of Stamford on January 18, 1992. Walther Gets Award Elizabeth Walther of Rowena has been selected to receive the Herman Sons Lodge No. 216 award for humanitarian service in the community for 1991.

Walther was presented a certificate recognizing her contribution of time and talent to various community programs at the lodge's monthly meeting, which was held Wednesday, December 18 at the O.D.H.S. Hall in Rowena.

The presentation was made by lodge president, Emmalene Watson.

Walther has donated approximately 600 hours in various volunteer work which includes coordinating the monthly commodity program in the Rowena area. She has also helped in conducting food drives for the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She visits area rest home patients, conducts fund-raising projects and helps with meals for families who are bereaved.

She has served as vice president of the local Sons of Herman Lodge for many years and is currently president of the SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Rowena. She is a member of the Zoar United Church of Christ and has two sons and one daughter.

SPJST Rowena Members Captured Top Honors In Livestock Show Lodge No. 49 in Rowena is very proud of all our young members. But now we want to give special honors to this group who has done real well at the 1992 Ballingner Livestock Show on January 17 and 18. The placed Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, also placed in second, third, fourth and fifth in their showing of several breeds of swine, turkey, broilers and rabbits.

The group which took the honors are Kristi Behrens, Jeff Schwertner, Kimberly Jansa, Kayla Jansa, Beck Schwertner, Scott Matschek, Brad Schwertner, Ryan Jansa and Matt Schwertner.

All of them are SPJST members of Lodge No. 49 in Rowena.

Kontinental Hosts Czechoslovakia 1991 In Review And Summer 1992 Preview February 16 Klub

For the 20th year, members who have traveled to Europe and especially to Czechoslovakia with Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Klecka of East Bernard, Klub Kontinental Tours, will meet to share memories, pictures, recent genealogical discoveries and news from relatives in Czechoslovakia, some of whom they located and met with the help of the Kleckas while on tour there.

The group will gather at Holy Cross Parish Community Room on Sunday, February 16 at 1:30 p.m. A video of scenes from the tour of last summer, which visited Bohemia and Moravia, including the capital of Moravia, Brno, will be shown. Following slides of the October 1991 tour will be viewed, and slides of Switzerland and Germany, which are on the itinerary for summer 1991, will give participants an idea of what they might look forward to before spending most of their time in Czechoslovakia this summer.

In Switzerland, the group will stay in Zurich and Lucerne, travel through Interlocken, the Lutschinen Valley to Grindelwald and journey through Lichtenstein to Austria, including the world famous ski resort of Garmisch.

The German portion of the tour will include the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein and a visit to Oberammergau, home of the famous Passion Play. From Germany, the tour will proceed to Prague through Salzburg, Austria and Ceske Budejovice.

In Moravia, the center for the tour will be Frenstat from where participants will tour of the Olomouc area and Valassko Folk Village in Rosnov, or, if they prefer, spend free_ time locating or visiting relatives. Rudy Klecka will personally accompany the tour, and all ground travel in Europe will be by first class European private tour bus.

A unique feature of this summer's tour is that anyone who would rather spend more time only in Czechoslovakia may arrange to do so through Rudy Klecka, instead of visiting Switzerland and Germany. This arrangement would be coordinated with the regular tour group, but allow for extended stay in Czechoslovakia.

Guests are invited to the reunion as well as those who have traveled with Klub Kontinental in the past. In particular, those interested in finding out more about the coming tour will have the opportunity to hear a description of the tour and to ask any questions they

might have. Refreshments will be served, and time for socializing with friends and relatives will be part of the reunion. It's convention time again on June 14, 1992 and a very good time to renew friendships with old friends whom we haven't see in four years.

Why not make this a memorable convention occasion by doing something special this time.

BENEVOLENCE - HUMANITYBROTHERHOOD is a mighty good motto for each member to follow.

What better way is there to follow than these three words, insignificant as they might mean to some, yet has such heartfelt meaning to each of us as a lodge member.

In effect it means that there is an urgent need to help and cherish our less fortunate members of our community who have a need to see better than their normal eyesight affords them.

As many lodge members throughout the state have read in the Vestnik that the fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) at SPJST Lodge No. 88 has been collecting used eye-glasses for six years, the call goes out once again.

Here's how the processing of the used eye-glasses program works.

Donations are collected by the FAC at Lodge No. 88, then taken to the THE LIGHTHOUSE of Houston.

Thense they are sent to the "Eyes for the Needy" program where they will be tested, graded and redistributed to overseas' missions, hospitals, and other organizations upon request.

In return for these, the Lighthouse receives "eye cards" which are provided to local needy individuals to assist them in obtaining eye glasses at no cost.

Inasmuch as there is plenty of time between now and convention time for each lodge to initiate a program to collect used eye glasses, why not make an effort to do so?

All glasses could be brought to the convention in Victoria in June and given to Homer Alexander of Lodge No. 88.

As a suggestion for sources for collecting used eye glasses, Alexander has found that lodge members and their friends, church groups, bowling leagues, Knignts of Columbus Councils, local nursing homes, Sons of Hersecretaries' legal Lodge, man associations, SPJST Supreme Lodge members, other SPJST lodges, the Katy Welcome Wagon, and lodge youth clubs are very good sources to solicit.

Please give a listing of names of donors and which lodge they are members, or other organizations as appropriate when you bring your donation to Homer at the convention.

Let's make a good showing--this is by no means a contest between lodges as to the number of glasses given, but merely an effort to help the unfortunate. If only one pair it means that you have cared.

Ernest and Ophelia Popp were married on January 31, 1942 -in San Antonio, Texas. The former Ophelia Seilen was born in Twin Sisters, Texas and is a retired beautician. Ernest was a former partner in the Popp Body Shop and a World War II veteran. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with a dinner and dance at Martinez Social Club on February 1, 1992. They repeated their vows at the 6 o'clock Mass at St. Margaret Mary Church with Father Tony Pesek officiating.

Dekujeme sestre Glorii Sellsove, ze ji pfivedla na nail schuzi. Marie Svobodova, Glorie Sellsova a Ja. jsme Plzenaeky, byly jsme narozene v Plzni, v Ceskoslovensku.

Jako obvykle president fadu Anthony Trilieek zahajil schnzi ve 2 hodiny odpoledne, vgichni tifednici byli pfitomni. Nejprve jsme vzdali test nail vlajce a pak jsme uctili pamatky zesnulYch elend jednou minutou ticha.

Tajemnice radu Jarolyn Poppova pfeeetla zpravy z minule schilze a podala finaneni zpravy a vie bylo pfijato beze zmeny.

Sestra Viola Kurtzova, ktera byla pfedsedkyne kontrolniho vYboru, oznamila, le ueetni knihy byly prohlednute a vie bylo nalezeno v pofadku.

Na liste nemocnYch byl Rudy Vaichar, mel operaci, ale ul je uzdraven a byl pfitomnY na schuzi. Take sestra Ann Spaekova byla pfitomna, vitali jsme ji, nebot' nemohla pfijit do schitze po delii dobu, mela zlomenou nohu.

Vet gina jednani byla o pfipravach na 75 lete vYroei na geho fadu, ktere se kvapem blizi, bude to 15. bfezna.

Uznali jsme naie reprezentativni sestry, ktere se sna21 prodavat pojigteni, "Annuity" a duchodni pfijeme viem obeandm, kterY se o to zajimaji. Being big didn't save the dinosaur.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue — then and now — is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
