THE NEWYEAR SHOULD SIGNAL THE START OF A NEW LIFE In less than a week, we will re­ place the calendar on the wall with a new one; a transition often heralded by a festive get-together with friends, relatives or neigh­ bors, waiting for the hands of the clock to scissor off the old year at midnight. However, the serious side of the new year should also be remembered, and when the bells and the strains of Auld Lang Syne have died out and the horns and paper hats have been put away until next year, it's time to make that list of what you will re­ solve to do (or stop doing) this year. Good intentions being what they are, you may not live up to it, but it's a start. The one resolution you should keep is to attend you local lodge and district meetings regularly. It may very well help you to adopt all those other items on your list.

Our new year combined efforts of SPJST should give us all new strength, stamina and will be the continued suc­ cess of our Order.

To obtain pointers on just how to proceed in this enthusiastic work, one has but to look about at those who have succeeded before us and to also look at the others who are just limping along, so to speak. Then give this some long, good and unbiased think­ ing, talking without anger or prejudice and then let us go forward in true fra­ ternal fashion toward the goals our lodges have set for themselves in the new year for our entire SPJST. Much has been accomplished in the year just past, in teamwork and har­ mony. Some brilliant records were chalked up to the credit of many lodges. It is now desirable for our "limping lodges" to get on the band­ wagon and follow suit in the new year.

Many of our sales representatives have truly worked hard, and even though some of them did outstanding work, there is still much lacking in some of our lodges for a vigorous and full lodge activity. Our efforts must not slacken in the coming year. Our in­ surance sales have been lagging, re­ cently.

We must help our lodge sales repre­ sentatives everywhere, especially where the membership drive has slowed down, for our own existence' s sake. We must replace those loved ones in the membership who have gone from our midst. We must gain, gain and gain in membership to main­ tain our position among fraternals in a growing world.

Therefore, our resolution for 1992 could be one, aiming at helping our sales representatives. This should not be too difficult for any success our sales representatives have, is also your success.

Another problem to resolve for the new year is to finally convince the mi­ nority in our brotherhood that our dis­ trict meetings have proven very beneficial to the Society and its work.

Creative thinking when brought before the meeting, will stimulate interest as well as good for our SPJST. Many good ideas die in the bud, just because someone is hesitant to present them for fear they be judged eccentric.

Let us give some thought to the idea of making our district meetings more beneficial. It is necessary to prepare your ideas for presentation before hand. Do not be misled into the belief that one can prepare for a district meeting in one or two weeks.

Preparation for district meetings takes time and careful planning if such meeting is to be effectively conducted.

In such meetings, instead of small talk and oratory, we should think and turn over ideas in our minds for the success

and growth of our Society. It takes participation of all of you who are willing to use your thinking facilities for SPJST's good.

Let us all realize now in the thinking that our district meetings should be considered our schooling in fraternal­ ism between conventions and, there­ fore, it is necessary to plan and prepare for them.

In a short half day, much cannot be accomplished at a district meeting, so, for this reason, every moment should be well planned ahead. Good planning requires the district officers with their membership to prepare ahead for the meeting' s smooth sailing and success avoiding useless talking.

In our lodge meetings, we should discuss points that we wish to recom­ mend to the district officers for discus­ sion.

Remember that the foundation for a successful district meeting is planning ahead with various committees who are indirectly responsible for the smooth running of our meetings. Prob­ lems worked in these meetings could serve our next convention by present­ ing them worked out and save much valuable time there. Also, remember that every well-conducted meeting and its fruitful work leaves a deep impres­ sion on the participants there who do not mind the time spent there. On the contrary, they return to their home lodge inspired, with ideas for harmoni­ ous work in their respective lodges.

During every district meeting, sales representatives should be recognized because they are an important link in the Society's chain.

It would also be fitting in the ensuing year, that our Supreme Lodge officers give us suggestions on how to proceed for the good of our Order; what we should do that we are not doing; and how we should direct our efforts for our own good. It should be mentioned in passing that we had reports from the Supreme Lodge officers in our Vestnik in the earlier part of 1991, and we are sure that every message from them was welcomed and well read. Sugges­ tions from our leaders not only carry weight, but more subjects in brotherly debate would be valuable to the mem­ bership. Our insurance department would help us all by pointing out where our efforts are lacking and rec­ ommending remedies for failing sales.

Let us also remember that sincerity, a good word, yields only good again and that we, brothers and sisters, should always act for the good of our­ selves and our SPJST. Another point we need to bring out to our sorrow, is that we have some relatively strong lodges in our orbit who do not elect lodge reporters in their annual elections. This negligence is their loss, and some usually come up with: "Well, you also have very little in the Vestnik from the Supreme Lodge officers."

The above-mentioned presented points have been brought out by re­ quest of some of our membership; it is impossible to please everyone and the Supreme Lodge officers, too, are reti­ cent because someone again might think they are trying to "Show Off" and, therefore, refrain from offering suggestions for the betterment of our fraternal work.

The spirit of sincerity in which this was presented meant only good for our common goal and we should earnestly, work with our youth in the new year.

May all of you have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

You owe it to *** yourself and your loved ones to be a member of the SPJST. *** A smile is a curve that sets a lot of things straight.

Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 met on Sunday, December 1, 1991 at SPJST Hall for their quarterly meeting and Christmas party.

Thanks again for the brave souls who came to the meeting in spite of the cold weather. The fellowship and food warmed everyone up.

While everyone feasted on the deli­ cious chicken spaghetti prepared by Brenda Minarcik and Betty Heinsohn and the desserts which everyone brought, Leon Sevcik entertained ev­ eryone with Christmas music on his accordian.

There were drawings for Christmas gifts, ornaments and table decorations to the delight of the children as well as the adults and everyone went home with something to remember the occa­ sion.

Alvin Minarcik on his accordian and Rose Rohde on the piano had the "toes tapping" while they played the old­ time polka favorites and keeping the spirits high.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, 1992 at the SPJST Hall. Look forward to seeing you there!

Lodge No. 81, Needville Lodge No. 81 held its final meeting of the year on Sunday, December 15, 1991. At 12:00 noon, fifty-eight mem­ bers and guests enjoyed a bountiful meal of baked turkey, dressing and all the trimmings. The Gilbert Walzels and Vincent Newmans, Sr. donated the two turkeys while Mary and Victor Werner donated the dressing. Deli­ cious salads, vegetables and desserts were prepared and brought by the sis­ ters of the lodge. Our thanks to all of you for making our Christmas dinner so festive and enjoyable.

The business meeting was called to order at 1 :00 p.m. by President Adolph Macha. Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Our two guests were District V Director Louis Hanus and Donna Moran, the "Micky Mouse Teacher of Kosice." (Be sure to read her article in the December 11, 1991 Vestnik issue; the experiences in Czechoslovakia of this talented teacher and writer will delight you.)

All officers were present. Minutes of the November meeting were read by Secretary Mary Werner. Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the finan­ cial report. Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel read the schedule of fu­ ture events coming up in the hall and presented the expenses and income of the past month covered by the Special Fund. All officers' reports were ac­ cepted as read.

New Braunfels The October meeting of Hill Country Lodge No. 185 was held October 24 at the Bavarian Village in New Braun­ fels. President Roy Haag called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The roll call showed all officers pres­ ent. Minutes of the last two meetings were read and approved.

Brother Ernest Jasek gave the treasurer's report. Correspondence was read and discussed. Credentials for convention delegates were explained.

Secretary Susan Bohnenberger was asked to present a list of eligible can­ didates at the January 1992 meeting.

Jay Eric And The Blíeders' Creek Band To Play At Round Rock Lodge No. 187 On New Year's Eve

"Red" prepared another one of his delicious meals for the party.

The youth club was busy trying to make some extra money.

To raise money, the youth club had a cake walk which was very successful.

Round Rock Lodge No. 187 Holds Semi-Annual "TIP Party" Recently, Round Rock Lodge No. 187 had their semi-annual "Tip Party."

This party was for the many people who volunteer countless hours for the hall. Without these fine people, the Round Rock Lodge No. 187 hall could not remain open. A delicious meal was enjoyed by everyone.

During the short business meeting, Albert Lange was voted the Lodge' s Fraternalist of the Year. Albert has been a member of the board of trustees since Lodge No. 187 was chartered in 1979. He has served as past president and is presently serving as vice presi­ dent. Albert is a very hard-working member of the board who is well-de­ serving of this award.

Each year the lodge donates money to help area 4-H Booster Clubs. This year $200.00 was donated to the Georgetown 4-H Booster Club and $200.00 also was donated to the Tay­ lor 4-H Booster Club. Our lodge takes pride in being able to financially help these Booster Clubs.

Jay Eric, the dynamic lead singer for the Blieders' Creek Band, has led the band into fast becoming the most pop­ ular group in the Texas area.

From performing at the rodeo in El Paso, Texas to appearances in Dallas, Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio and in between, wherever they go they receive rave reviews.

Jay already has many credits to his name. He has appeared on the Nash­ ville network show "You Can Be A Star," first runner-up in a Kaja 97 Radio Battle of the Bands Contest. He has opened shows for such acts as George Strait, Reba McEntire, Steve Wariner, Rodney Crowell, Tanya Tucker, Clint Black, Sawyer Brown and many others. Many of these shows were outdoor concerts and fairs with an excess of more than 25 thousand in attendance.

Jay is gifted with the ability to not only sing, but, also to be a very cre­ ative songwriter. As a result of this -­ on January 1, 1990, he signed an ex­ clusive 4-year writer's agreement with Tree International, one of the largest publishing companies in Nashville, Tennessee.

The band consists of 5 other mem­ bers, one of which is his brother (Matt) who plays lead guitar. The group plays old standards, new country and can throw in some top 40s.

The band's excellent showmanship and getting audience participation dur­ ing their show is what has helped to create the band' s popularity.

Tickets for the New Year's Eve dance are now available each weekend during regular scheduled dances.

Prices of the tickets are $8.50 each or $16.00 a ,couple. Party favors will be furnished.

Ladies Circle Of Fort Worth The Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 held its December 1 Oth meeting with President Clara Cohn presiding. A mo­ ment of silent prayer was observed for our beloved member, Marguerit Konecny, who passed away November 28th. She was a longtime, active mem­ ber and will be missed. Also our sym­ pathy is with Ernie Dueser who lost his mother, Annie Laymance, and to Frances Simmank in the loss of her husband, Ed Simmank, The following guests were wel­ comed, namely: Lorinda Manasco, Mary Pavey, Sherie Saylors, Eva Dockery, Emma Demetruk and Johnathan Cranfill.

Also Marie Prill had eye transplant surgery and is doing well. Sympathy and get well cards were sent to the members.

A short business meeting was held during which a motion was made to send $25.00 to the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home for Christmas. Motion was seconded and approved.

Hostesses for January will be Marie Tesar, Rosie Zalesak, Pauline Morbitzer and Betty Loyd.

Door prizes were won by Ann Schneider and Maria Prill. Members sang "Jingle Bells," then joined in a game called Mr. and Mrs. Right where gifts are exchanged. Everyone enjoys the game and gets into the Christmas spirit. Then it was time for the deli­ cious turkey, dressing and all the trim­ mings. Followship and also games followed. A blessed Christmas was wished to everyone. A peaceful New Year to all of you! See you in 1992.

Kristi Vollentine

Misti Vallentine, daughter of Pam and Bill Vollentine, has a twin sister, Kristi and also sisters, Lindsey and Suzanne.

Her interest is in sports and her boyfriend William, and her favorite sujbect is home economics.

The 14-year-old Misti is a 9th grade student at Caldwell High School.

She is also involved in 4-H Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The 14-year-old Kristi Vollentine's parents are Pam and Bill Vallentine.

She has a twin sister, Misti, also other sisters, Lindsey and Suzanne.

Her interest in hobbies keep her busy reading, taking part in drama, and playing bass clarinet.

The freshman at Caldwell High School also is involved in 4-H Club, FHA, Drama Club, Science Club and Band.

Lindsey Vollentine Brandon Odstrcil Lindsey Vollentine, age 8, is the daughter of Pam and Bill Vollentine.

She has three sisters, Misti, Kristi and Suzanne.

The Caldwell Elementary third grade student's hobbies include reading, playing and dancing.

She is also involved in the 4-H Club.

The l O-year-old fourth grade student is also involved in 4-H Club and Boy Scouts and he attends Cooks Point Brethren Church.

His. hobbies are hunting and fishing and enjoys riding his 4-wheeler.

Lodge 107 youth group from Lodge No. 107 in Floresville had our Christ­ mas party. We would like to thank all the adults for their time and help with the Christmas party. While we were there, at the party, we had fun playing games and hitting the pinata. Thank you we enjoyed meeting some of the members' friends.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 29, Taylor on behalf of the entire membership, wish to extend our sympathy to the bereaved family of sister HELEN M. LESHIKAR, of Taylor, who died Saturday, Septem­ ber 26, 1991 in Memorial City Medi­ cal Center in Houston.

Miss Leshikar was born in Taylor, the daughter of Henry and Josie (Matyas) Leshikar. She had lived in Taylor all her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Homer Kelly officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Paul Jozwiak, Jr., Allen Jozwiak, Carl Kulhanek, Jr., Donny Jozwiak, Henry Naizer, Jr., and Steven Jozwiak.

Among the survivors is a sister, Julia L. Jozwiak and husband, Paul of Sealy; two nieces and four nephews.

ANNELIESE F. THIELKE, age 61, who passed away October 24, 1991 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nash­ ville, Tennessee.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Woodfin Chapel in Smyrona with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Kenneth Armstrong officiated.

Sister Anneliese was a native of Stuttgart, West Germany, the daughter of the late Eugene Karl and Crezentia Eberle Allgayer.

She is survived by her husband, Ar­ nold E. Thielke; three sons, Tech. Sgt. Michael A. Thielke with the Royal Air Force in Uppe Hegford, England, James A. Thielke of Smyrona and Ar­ thur L. Thielke of La Vergue; three daughters-in-law; a sister, Eugenia McWhorter of Waco, Texas and four grandchildren.

Sister Thielke was a member of the Lutheran Church. She was a machine operator at General Electric Company for the past 18 years, was a member of

Mrs. Burgess was born August 2, 1909 in Taylor to the late Joe and Theresa (Jirasek) Leshikar. A lifelong resident of Taylor, she was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 2.9.

Sister Burgess had been employed at Dr. J.J. John's home for ten years and in local rest homes.

Preceding her in death were two hus­ bands, Edward Balusek on June 16, 1953, Chester Burgess, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Hejl of­ ficiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Balusek, Jr. and wife Wanda Jo of Taylor, Bobby Balusek and wife Norma of San Marcos; two brothers, Edwin Leshikar and wife Frances of Bastrop, J.D. Leshikar and wife Laverne of Taylor; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 29, Taylor on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of brother RAY LLOYD KROPP, of Taylor, who died Monday, Septem­ ber 30, 1991 at his home.

Brother Kropp was born in the Lanesport area to Joe O. and Mary (Mucha) Kropp. He attended school in Thrall, and had lived in the Taylor area all his life. An employee for TU Electric for 36 years, he was currently working as assistant foreman in the Dallas construction division. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served at Fort Hood and in Germany. He was a mem­ ber of the Brethren Church, American Legion Post 39, and the SPJST Lodge 29.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a twin brother, Roy Kropp, and another brother, A.J. Kropp.

The family received friends at Con­ dra Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the Taylor Brethren Church with the Rev. James Hejl of­ ficiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ted Airheart, Char­ les Easley, Allen Rutter, Joe Graham, David Files, William Hyder, Mike Rainwater and Rex Monroe.

Honorary pallbearers were Raymond Parkey, Floyd Kuhl, August Prcin, Billy Smith, Glendon Neal and Vincil Mares.

Survivors include Annette "Ann" Kropp of Taylor; two daughters, Kim­ berly Kay and Kerri Rae Kropp of Taylor; several nieces and nephews in­ cluding Clifford Tomancak, Jr. and John Maruska of Taylor; a brother, Joe D. Kropp and wife Ella of Taylor.

Funeral services for Brother Henry Ben Kubena, Sr. of East Bernard were held Sunday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Interment was made at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard, with Father Gerry Cernoch officiating.

A wake service was held Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Davis Chapel in East Bernard.

Brother Kubena was born on July 15, 1900 in East Bernard. He married Annie M. Kortis in Dime Box on Oc­ tober 27, 1925. He was a gin operator for Kubena Gin Company in East Ber­ nard for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Annie M. Kubena of East Bernard; one daughter, Birdie Jo Hlavinka of East Bernard; three sons, Edwin Joe Kubena of East Bernard, Henry B. Kubena, Jr. of Houston and Delphine L. Kubena of Harwood; one brother, August Kubena of Rosenberg; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of East Bernard.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone submit our deepest sympathy to the family of EDWIN A. SIMMANK, who passed away October 24, 1991 at the age of 83.

Brother Simmank grew up in the Red Ranger community east of Temple and lived in Fort Worth since 1938. He was a welder at North Texas Steel Company for 32 years when he retired at the age of 65.

He joined the SPJST at the age of 17 and he was a member for 66 years. He also was a member of Sons of Her­ mann Lodge No. 33 in Fort Worth. He was a World War II veteran in the 74th Naval Construction Battalion.

Survivors include his wife, Frances (Mucha) Simmank of Fort Worth; daughter, Catherine Simmank of Fort Worth; brothers, Raymond Simmank of Houston and Jerry Simmank of Fort Worth; five sisters, Ida Mayer of Mansfield, Julia Dueser, Clara Gilbert, Lenie Shaw and Ella Hilcher of Fort Worth; eight nieces and nine nephews.

Pallbearers were Sons of Hermann members.

Services were held at Laurel Land Funeral Chapel at 12:00 noon October 26 with burial in Laurel Land Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton on behalf of our entire mem­ bership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother JOE V. CHLAPEK, 87, of Seaton, who died Wednesday, November 27, 1991 in a Temple hospi­ tal following surgery. He had been a resident in a local nursing home for 21 months following a stroke.

Mr. Chlapek was born to Josef and Rosie Langer Chlapek in Seaton where he was educated. He had been a trustee of the Seaton Common School District 18, worked at precinct elections and a member of the Board of Elders of the Ocker Brethren Church. He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47 in Seaton for over 50 years. He married Mary Chudej on October 22, 1929, therefore, this marriage was celebrated 62 years this year.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Annie Kovar; two brothers, Edwin and Jerry Chlapek; two brothers and a sister in infancy.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Chlapek of Seaton; two sons, Marvin J. Chlapek of Houston and Calvin J. Chlapek of Temple; also three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Seaton Brethren Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Motl was born in Seaton to Frank Reznicek and Vera (Baca) Manak. She attended the Seaton School and in 1922 she married Ladis (L.J.) Motl. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47 for over 50 years.

Vlasta and her husband were the ticket chairpersons for many years, and they also earned a "Brother and Sister" award at the lodge. She belonged to the Seaton Senior Citizens Club.

Sister Motl was preceded in death by her husband in 1981.

Features Concho Valley CHS Report The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society, of the Concho Valley, held a short business meeting and Christmas party Sunday, December 8, 1991 in the SPJST Hall in Rowena.

President Robert Mikeska brought the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

Secretary Nancy Day read the minutes, which were accepted as read with a minor correction.

For those persuing their genealogy, a 19.20 census will be available for $13.00 a roll from Angelo State University in San Angelo.

Everyone reported a nice Thanksgiv­ ing.

Friday morning, November 29 - the home was decorated for Christmas.

The residents enjoyed helping and watching. In the afternoon, the birth­ day party was held which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday." The Unique Shop provided corsages and boutonnieres, the Immanuel United Church of Christ Guild provided cakes, Evelyn Gorka brought cookies: and volunteers -- Ida Gasch, Lydia Hortman and Freda Klawitter helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all.

"Happy Birthdays" for the month of November were residents -- Hilda Cole, Minnie Schulz, Rosalee Bishop, Elizabeth Miller and Felix Gorka; Staff -- Dorothy Byrd, Jo Ann Wright, Laura Silhavy, Yolanda Cisneros, Westerfield and Ervin Poncik.

The residents enjoyed all the activi­ ties during November.

Thanks to all denominations of churches and volunteers who perform services in the home for our residents.

The Word "Bohemian"

By T.L. Novosad It has been my observation over my lifetime that Texas Czechs do not like to be called "Bohemians." However, Bohemia was our homeland. It is now called Czechoslovakia but before World War I and into antiquity it was called Bohemia, after the Boii tribe who were Celts. I call myself a Bohemian and use the word as an al­ ternate to Czech. I believe that this is proper and correct, yet, there is always a tug at my heart. What is the prob­ lem?

In Websters New Collegiate Dictio­ nary, I found that the second definition for Bohemian is Gypsy. Do you be­ lieve that? I don't, not us! But what is the answer? If our most commonly used dictionary defines Bohemian as Gypsy, there must be an interesting and important history. There is.

We must begin with a study of the Gypsies. The encyclopedias offer con­ siderable information and there are several authoritative books on the sub­ ject. That Gypsies came from India can be taken as a fact. They have their own language which has been identi­ fied with that of several tribes of Northern India. They have dark fea­ tures such as skin, eyes, course black hair and are small in stature. I don't re­ call any Czechs such as this. The Gyp­ sies had been Nomadic in the past and probably some still are. They some­ times are called wanderers. Their trades can be traced to related tribes in India. They are well-known for traits of stealing, cheating and con-artistry.

Regardless of the abundance of in­ formation that is available about the Gypsies, there is widespread misunder­ standing about their origin. Many be­ lieve they · come from Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary or Greece.

The English thought they came from Egypt thus their name for English­ speaking people became Gypsy. The Greeks called them Athingani from which it is believed the name Cigan and variations of Cigan originated. But woe unto us, the French called them Bohemians which is their word for Gypsy even today. How did this hap­ pen? So far, I have found two versions.

The first version, which to me is most logical, is simply that when the Gypsies entered France in the 15th century, they were called Bohemians.

Most probably, it was the Gypsies themselves who said this is who they were just as they told the English that they were Egyptians.

The second version is taken from a French book (fortunately translated into English). It is stated that authentic Bohemians came to France to form a long-lived group among the Goliards who in the 12th century were wander­ ing about Europe and England as min­ strels. Apparently, the Goliards were well-known because articles about them are found in the encyclopedias. It is not known how long they lasted but, apparently, the Bohemian minstrels were still around when the Gypsies en­ tered France in the 15th century. The French associated them with and called them Bohemians. The lack of logic in this second version is that the Bohemians would have been in France two or three hundred years before the Gypsies arrived and it is hard to be­ lieve that the French could not tell them apart.

Vzdor tomu že jest nás kolem 60,000 (uctyhodný to počet), avsšk to neznamená, že naše poslání, naše snažení je skončeno. =Naše Jednota musí i nadále růst, skvětat a · mohutnět.

Nechť tedy jedenkaždý z nás si uvědomí svoji povinnost k Jednotě a upřímně přiloží ruce k práci, což jest naše nejvřelejší přání na prahu nového roku 1992 nám všem!

Antonín Dvořák

Génius české hudby Narodil se 8. září 1841 v Nelahozev­ si, malé vsi pár kilometrů severně od Kralup. Jeho otec tu měl hospodu a řeznictví a jaksi samozřejmě počítal s tím, že prvorozený syn po něm jednou ~ ,,

živnost převezme. Řezník František Dvořák hrával na housle a citeru. S údivem pozoroval, jak je jeho synek celý žhavý do hudby, jak si rád zabrnká na citeru, jak blaženě hladí a potěžkává housle. Opatřil mu tedy housličky a ukázal co a jak. Do práce si ho vzal jeho první učitel v nelahozevské škole, Josef Spitz.

Výsledkem bylo, že malý Antonín Dvořák uváděl ve svých osmi letech svou hrou na housle hosty otcova šenku v úžas.

Ve třinácti ho otec poslal do Zlonic, aby se u strýce pocvičil v němčině. Ale Antonín se zde mnohem více věnoval hudbě. Měl totiž štěstí, že na zlonické škole vyučoval vynikající hudebník, učitel Antonín Liebmann. Ten záhy poznal chlapcův mimořádný talent a začal ho podle svých možností a umu rozvíjet. Navíc se velmi přičinil o to, aby otce Dvořáka přesvědčil, že bude mnohem prospěšnější, když se jeho syn nestane řezníkem, ale hudebníkem. A tak mladý Antonín na podzim roku 1857 odchází do Prahy, aby se na varhanické škole vyučil na muzikanta.

Dva roky docházel do ponuré budovy Konviktu a zde se pod vedením Leopolda Zvonaře a Josefa Foerstra, otce známého skladatele, nejen cvičil ve hře na varhany, ale také získával potřebné teoretické znalosti pro skladatelskou činnost.

Jako varhaník však marně hledal v Praze místo, až se uchytil jako violista v pražské kapele Karla Komzáka, s níž později zakotvil v Prozatímním divadle. Tam se také seznámil s Bedřichem Smetanou, který byl od roku 1866 šéfem opery a dirigentem divadelního orchestru. A pod jeho vlivem také sám začal skládat. Byl to právě Bedřich Smetana, kterému ukázal své první skladby a jenž také dirigoval první provedení předehry k jeho opeře Král a uhlíř. Třebaže toto dílo nebylo tehdy předvedeno celé, ocenil ho Smetana jako "vážnou práci, plnou geniálních nápadů".

Dveře do světa otevřel Dvořákovi německý skladatel Johannes Brahms, který po seznámení se s některými jeho skladbami, zvláště s půvabnými Moravskými dvojzpěvy, doporučil mladého tvůrce berlínskému nakladateli Simrockovi. Ten Brahmse poslechl a vydáním prvních děl umožnil Dvořákovi nastoupit cestu ke světové proslulosti. Český umělec v průběhu dalších let doslova chrlil jednu skladbu za druhou. Z jeho tvůrčí dílny vyšlo více než sto opusových čísel. Byly to sklad­ by všech žánrů -- devět symfónií, Slovanské tance, řada dalších orchestrálních skladeb, sólové koncer­ ty, komorní skladby, kantáty, písně a sbory, opery Rusalka, Jakobín, Čert a Káča a osm dalších. Tato díla byla uváděna nejslavnějšími dirigenty té doby nebo přímo pod Dvořákovou taktovkou v mnoha evropských městech. Hostila ho Vídeň, Budapešť, Berlín, Drážďany, Petrohrad i Moskva. V roce 1883 byl poprvé pozván do Anglie, kam v příštích

OVÝ letech zajel devětkrát. Roku 1891 byl vyznamenán cambridgeskou univer­ zitou čestným titulem doktora hudby.

O rok později se rozjel do Ameriky, kde tři roky působil jako ředitel konzervatoře v New Yorku. Po návratu domů se stal profesorem skladby na pražské konzervatoři a vychoval zde řadu budoucích významných skladatelů v čele s Vítězslavem Novákem, Oskarem Ned­ balem a svým pozdějším vlastním zetěm Josefem Sukem.

Ale přes všechny své oslnivé úspěchy zůstal po. celý život, jak sám vyjádřil v jednom dopise, "prostým českým muzikantem".

říká půvabná Claudia CARRERA, i když její původ a dosavadní životní osudy jsou trochu složitější. Narodila se sice v Praze, ale venezuelskémuotci a německématce, která později přijala československéstátní občanství. Přesto není důvod o upřímnosti jejího tvrzení pochybovat. Ačkoli už téměř osm let žije ve venezuelském Caracasu, každý rok do "své" staré vlasti přijíždí, aby se setkala s kamarády, prošla se pražskými zákoutími a zalyžovalasi ve slovenských Tatrách. Nyní dokonce uvažuje i o tom, že se do Českosloven­ ska opět a tentokrát již natrvalo přestěhuje i se svým manželem, (který je mimochodem Francouz) a dvěma dětmi, (z nichž jedno bylo v době · našeho rozhovoru teprve na cestě na svět).

Atraktivní pětadvacetiletá Claudia, s vlasy zrajícího obilí a očima hořké čokolády, ovšem v poslední březnový týden letošního roku nepřijela do rodné Prahy jen za zábavou a vzpomínkami. Hlavní příčinou její ces­ ty bylo jednání s nakladatelstvím Mladé fronty o vydání knížky E. Stanko Vráze Napříč rovníkovou Amerikou. Kniha by měla vyjít v roce 1992 ve španělštině a měla by být věnována výročí objevení "Nového světa".

Claudia Carrera zavítala ale také na Čs. ústav zahraniční, jehož se stala čerstvou členkou a poskytla pár připomínek i redakci našeho časopisu.

"Strašně ráda vařím," svěřila se nám na závěr, "sbírám kuchařské předpisy z celého světa, ale z české a slovenské kuchyně -- až je to paradoxní -- nemám žádný. Když jsme odjížděli, bylo mi sedmnáct, a to jsem se, popravdě řečeno, o vaření ještě moc nezajímala.

Teď bych uvítala, kdybych dobré recepty našla i ve vašem časopise."

Bohemia (Continued From Page 12) oped around the first half of the 19th century. It became popular then to be an artist of some kind, especially in Paris. Many claimed to be artists even though they were not. The name Bohemian began to be applied to this movement (meaning Gypsy) due to the artists penchant for odd dress, long hair, living for the moment, having no stable residence, radical political en­ thusiasm, drink, drugs, crime, irregular work patterns and addiction to night life. This is somewhat similar to 0ur periods here in the USA regarding beatniks and hippies. Bohemianism also became a political resistance in opposition to the bourgeois. The term became popularized by playwrights and writers. The opera by Puccini "La Boheme" written in the 1890s further popularized Bohemianism and gave it international scope. The opera also presents a good model of Parisian Bohemianism. Remember Bohemian­ ism was not actually linked to our geo­ graphical Bohemia; however, due to ignorance, a false but firm link did de­ velop and what a great inequity this was. This misrepresentation and injus­ tice exists to this day. Of course, this false linkage is the heart of the prob­ lem causing Czechs to avoid the word Bohemian.
