How You Can Make This A Happier Christmas!

You can start by giving to others in need You can say a kind word or do a kind deed You can help make this Christmas much brighter, I guess, Just by trying to bring someone else happiness.

You can smile at the people wher­ ever you go And send greetings to friends you may know You can sing Christmas carols and help trim a tree And visit with those who mean so much to me.

For each of those acts, no matter how small, Speaks a language that' s understood clearly by all It' s the language of love and it makes Hearts feel lighter And, in this way, you'll know You've made Christmas much brighter.

"The Spirit of Christmas." Each year, during the holiday season, hearts are warmed with stories reported in the media about needy families who have been helped or about some worthy in­ dividual who has been given a helping hand.

What is it about Christmas that brings out that charitable impulse, that thoughtful gesture? From coast to coast, there are instances of neighbors helping neighbors and the fortunate sharing with those less fortunate at this time of year.

On street corners across the nation, the familiar black kettle of the Salva­ tion Army reminds busy shoppers that for many, Christmas is a difficult time.

Each year, thousands of coins are dropped into those kettles, to be con­ verted into dollars to be used to feed, clothe and shelter the less fortunate.

In many of our lodges, stores, churches, etc. people bring canned goods, new toys and money preceding the holiday season. Volunteers collect these donations and make them up into baskets of holiday cheer for needy families.

In cities and towns throughout the country, choral groups give of their time and talent to brighten the holiday season for patients in hospitals and convalescent homes, while various or­ ganizations donate gifts to these pa­ tients at Christmastime.

For years, the Marine Corps has brought joy to youngsters with its Toys for Tots program, supported by businesses and individuals as well.

Not all holiday good deeds are done on such a wide scale, of course ...many of us have gone out of our way to do some small act of kindness for a lonely neighbor or an invalid ...and perhaps some of us have been the recipient of a particularly thoughtful act at Christ­ mas.

Perhaps the spirit of the season is in­ spired by the idea of the infant Jesus lying in the manger ...perhaps it is in­ spired by the hope of peace on earth,

good will toward men ...whatever the cause, Christmas is traditionally the season of loving, caring and giving.

Let us make the spirit of the season last all year long!

*** There is no Santa Claus. At some­ time in his life, every man must learn that there is no Santa Claus. That the world is not paternalistic. That he is pretty much on his own. Others may help, but not at much sacrifice to themselves.

You stand or fall on your own decisions, your own habits, your own work. No one will look out for you or yours -- it's up to you and you get no second choice!

Run your own life -- and make it good. Run your own business, and don't expect much help from others. It is no part of nature to guarantee your happiness -- you have to dig it out with your own hands with toil and struggle.

Life is hard -- but the sun shines and flowers bloom and stars come out, and tomorrow is another day.

Push all the buttons -- you push them, and the lights will come on!"

*** The one thing, we need to remem­ ber, especially in this time of savings and loan, bank and insurance company failures and bankruptcies, is that fra­ ternal benefit societies are very much more financially stable, especially our own SPJST with its good solvency and, therefore, are a stronger founda­ tion in which to invest and have faith in. Your editor is a member of four different fraternal benefit societies and receives their publication regularly and all four are on a much sounder fi­ nancial basis than most commercial companies.

Let us build an even sounder, and stronger SPJST! It is only for our own good, one and all!

*** The flu season has arrived sooner than was expected this year -- it sur­ prised everyone including our national Center for Disease Control (CDC). Ev­ eryone is advised to take very cau­ tious, sensible care of themselves -­ first signs are feverishness, tiredness, aching all over, etc. Rest and sensible eating including fluids are advisable according to our doctors recommenda­ tions.

Also, remember, "An ounce of pre­ vention is worth a pound of cure!"

One of our worst flu epidemics in United States was early in this century; it killed thousands of our citizens. In one case, a veteran soldier of World War I who had survived the World War in 1918 in the trench warfare in France, came back to his job after the war, went to work one morning, had a high fever by noon, went home and was dead that night. Medical science says that a million of the flu viruses can occupy the space of a "pinhead."

*** Although they gave the world some of the most beautiful harvests of poems, the English poets Keats, Byron and Shelley, when computing the life span of all three, amounted to only 92 years! Keats died at the age of 26, Byron at 36 and Shelley at 30.

Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 - December 25, 1991 The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting Oc­ tober 1, 1991 through December 25, 1991.

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

A donation of $1.00 per member is suggested for this drive. Any donation amount would certainly be appreciated to help defray the cost of higher educa­ tion.

All donors' names will be published in the Vestnik.

Linda Matula from Lodge No. 29 was a guest; we were happy to have her and hope she comes back.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: The December meeting was called to order by President LaVerne Cabla, all officers were present. Visitors at the meeting were Herman Mayeux and Jennifer Ashcraft.

The minutes of the November meet­ ing were read and approved with one correction.

Members celebrating anniversaries in December are Joe and Lorine Haisler, Jerry and Laverne Cabla, Ray and Doris Coots, Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska. Birthday celebrants are Ra­ mona Gerick, Rodney Posvar, Danny Ashcraft, Arleen Mayeux, Larry Kelerek, Larry Coots, Christopher Cabla and Christina Kirby. Hope all of you have a wonderful day.

President Cabla thanked all of the members who helped at the Christmas party which was a big success. A big thank you to Shirley Ashcraft and the members of the youth club for a very touching and lovely memorial service for the deceased members of our lodge for 1991.

There were several reports given by the chairmen of various committees.

There was no board report given due to no meeting held.

Our New Year's Eve tickets are going fast -- Jed Durbin and the Spur of the Moment will be playing, the tickets are $10.00 per person. Contact Carol Chervenka at 642-3608 after 6:00 p.m. for reservations.

We will be decorating our hall for New Year's Eve dance on Sunday, De­ cember 29 at 4:00 p.m. Anyone is wel­ come to come by and help, please bring a snack with you.

Lodge No. 35, Elk Report November 10, 1991 On November 10, 1991 President Henry Breitkreutz brought our meeting to order.

The pledge was led by Jana Breitkreutz and Charlene Stead.

Visitors for the day were Hubbie Frazier, David Graves and Tom Pen­ nick.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

Other correspondence was the invita­ tion to Melissa Burney's and Tom Pennick's wedding.

Verna Pavelka gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney gave her report. Old business was the Hal­ loween party at the Pizza Hut and that we went to the Drug Free Haunted House Drivethrough. New business was that December 2nd we will have a tree decorating party for the Elk Hall and will plan our Christmas youth pro­ gram and also will need to bring snacks, draw names to exchange gifts

at our Christmas party and to plan when we will have our youth family Christmas party. For a fund-raiser, we will sell tickets on a Concho necklace set, a decorated Christmas sweat shirt and a Christmas ornament; maybe a wreath. The drawing will be at our mother lodge party on December 8, 1991.

Birthdays for November were Chris­ topher Pavelka, Louise Burney and Florence Frazier.

Louise Burney, personally, invited everyone to the wedding of their daughter, Melissa.

Sunshine Committee reported that Calvin Schmedhoist was in the hospi­ tal; we hope he is well by now.

Door prize won at the youth meeting was by Charlene Stead.

At the mother lodge meeting, the prize was won by youth=Evan Pavelka and adulr-Eugene Gerik.

Then we had election of officers for the SPJST officers. Vernon Wood made a motion that we go on with the Elk Incorporated elec­ tion of officers for the coming year.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Dear Members: President Reese began the December meeting asking for the presentation of flags by Jennifer Reese and Mark Gre­ ger. The members remained standing in a moment of silent prayer for the loss of our members and friends Vlasta Motl and Joe Chlapek; may their souls be at peace.

The 75 members attending were wel­ comed and the visitors -- Ann Balusek, Tammy Pechal and Freddie Schroeder -- were asked to come again.

Reported on the sick list were Mark Greger, Rachel Baca, Johnny Vanicek and Stacey Skrabanek; all were wished a quick recovery.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, board members and sales representatives followed by the minutes, which stood as read.

Reported and accepted as new mem­ bers or additionals were Billy Wayne Hall, Edward J. Mokry, Michael Brenek, Russ Zavodny and Chris Chlapek. These members are encour­ aged to participate in all of Lodge 47's mother lodge and/or youth club activi­ ties.

It was announced that an informative meeting concerning the bullet train will be held December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Parish Hall in Cy­ clone.

Board members were read by Judy Pechal.

President Reese introduced Ms. Carol Lock, spokesperson for CAB (Citizens Against the Bullet). Ms. Lock gave insight to the planning and cost of the train in addition to numer­ ous disadvantages.

Speaking on behalf of future taxpay­ ers was Mr. A.L. Markham. He brought forth these and other points -­ the train's permanence and visibility, the need for subsidies to construct the train and the final franchise signing scheduled for the end of January 1992.

Both spokespersons urged everyone to call local officials or the governor to voice opposition to, or the delay of, the contract signing.

Officers' reports followed.

President Reese stated that the 6th, 7th and 8th will be days spent in prep­ aration for the annual Christmas party.

Anyone may come out and lend a hand. Friday night at 6:00 p.m., join in the decorating of the hall, making fruit packs for the children and food prepa­ ration. Saturday, the cooking and cleaning - begin. Sunday, a simple ''I'll help" will do.

Delegates to the convention will hold their first meeting December 20th at 7:00 p.m.

The committee selections will be done at the January meeting along with installation of officers.

The barbecue pit area was cleaned from top to bottom and various repairs were completed. All work and tools were donated by Edwin Pechal, Edwin Vasicek, Donnie Pechal, James Skrabanek, David Pechal, Gary Skrabanek and E.J. Pechal. A gas cook stove was donated by Rick Novosad.

FAC Ruth Hanusch stated that Star Hall is hosting the Tarok Tournament on January 11 and a Progressive "42" Tournament is set for Jan u ary 17th.

Christmas caroling is tentatively set for December 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek invited ev­ eryone interested to Friday night's meal preparation. Also, please, bring a dessert and/or vegetable to be shared at the Christmas dinner.

An audit will be held on Friday, Jan­ uary 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Chairpersons' reports were given.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky stated that 35 members, one visitor and one adult were in attendance. The youth will pick up trash December 7 at 9:00 a.m., with Christmas practice im­ mediately following. Sister Patsy asked that the members help a local needy family by donating canned goods; there will be a collection box at the Christmas party.

A group of ladies has graciously vol­ unteered to make a quilt as a picnic prize for the 1992 picnic. I believe this group is comprised of the same ladies who made this year' s quilt.

Special Called Meeting For Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville, Texas Dear Member, This is a notice that a special called meeting will be held on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1991, for the officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m., and will be held at the resi­ dence of E. Shupak at 935 Shupak Road.

Lodge No. 74, Lovelady Dear Members and Guests: Donny Vondra and Nick Smoldas re­ ally drew a big crowd with their talent entertaining the dancing fans. There were several members who attended and who have been attending most lodge activities for several years; just to name a few are Annie Green, Slivina Michka, John Flagen, etc. I'm sure I didn't overlook several others.

We appreciate all of you for attending and that encourages the ones who are working so hard keeping the lodge fa­ cilities open.

Annie Green really is loyal to SPJST. She said she is willing to work for Lodge No. 74, which really made me feel good to know she feels that way.

Just think of it, she is a charter mem­ ber since 1934 being now past 80 years young and still is in the cattle business and still wants to work for our lodge. I wonder how many others are willing to do that.

There are still two other charter members living, namely, Jerry Chermak and Annie Omelina. It would be so nice to have them come to one of our meetings and have a picture of them to put in the Vestnik; 56 years of membership is great!

We really have some hard-working members. Win Bradshaw and his wife Joyce are certainly the backbone of our lodge. They don't only work for the lodge free, they also purchase lots of supplies needed for our lodge from

their own pocket; for instance, they drove to Palestine, Texas and bought 18 cases of soft drinks besides other supplies. Others are Jerry Michka, Jerry Bearden, Louise Bearden, Sherry and Don McKenney; and, of course, Loudimer Shmoldas, Ralph Smith, Raymond Harris and his wife Inez, who are also doing great things for our lodge.: We are in need of having someone selling SPJST insurance. I, myself, don't have the time because I am over­ loaded in the cattle business and other things, however, I will still sell but if anyone calls on me, I will be glad to sign them up. We need some young and bright persons who can put more time into it.

We had Steve Murry entertaining the dancing fans on December 14th. On December 21, we will have John Tullas Band entertaining for this dance. For New Year's Eve dance, the Mirage Band from Tyler, Texas will entertain all our dancing fans.

We also need more people to be with us for game nights; come and bring someone with you. It's a good fellow­ ship. As I've mentioned before, people bring snacks of all kinds which are free to all who attend; that' s every THURSDAY NIGHT from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

88; on December 28 the Knights of Dixie will play, they are well-known for their fine music and, as a rule, draw a big crowd. The music is variety for the "Semi-old and young." Enter­ tainment Chairman Viola Cox has a big New Year's Eve dance planned with music by the Texas Dutchmen (Polkatime). Hope everyone had their reservations in by December 2nd. The dance starts at 9:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. You are lucky to get tickets, later, but you might try because some may not be able to come, but I am sure Viola has a waiting list.

I'm sure most of you had a great Thanksgiving. I DID. I had 40 people for turkey and ham, plus all the dishes everyone brought. It was fun because the weather was delightful, and our blessings many.

We have some very sick people who are greatly missed. Della Kadlecek has fought a great battle, and yesterday was somewhat better. She's hoping to go home for Christmas.

Henry Knapick had knee surgery and was doing fine, but he had a set-back.

Hope it' s only minor because I know he wants to be home with the family for Christmas.

Dear Members and Friends: Time marches on and here it is time we are getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Christmas is what it says -Christ Mass when we celebrate Christ's birthday and also it is the time of year that all people get-together greeting each other, which should be like this all year and not only at Christmas. After the holiday season is over, people seem to get into a rut and forget to be friendly. I hope this doesn't happen in our organization.

Not to put it off any longer -- my greetings to all the Vestnik readers. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Properous New Year; 1991 was a good year and if everyone will try, 1992 will be a better year.

Sunday, December 8 the four SPJST lodges in the Metro-plex area had a Christmas party. The meal was very good and the afternoon was enjoyable with all our friends. The dance was later and Harold Strand from Waco played so nice and kept dancers on the floor dancing all the time. We thank the brothers and sisters of Lodge No. 180 for the wonderful time they showed everyone while hosting this year's Christmas party. (I know there is lots of work with having a party, but all of us enjoyed the day.)

District III Director Sid Pokladnik said the blessing and afterwards, the officers of the four lodges were installed. He asked all members present to stand behind the elected officers and keep helping SPJST be a good fraternal organization. I am so sorry that some of the Supreme Lodge officers were unable to attend; even Brother Sefcik and Maxine missed the day with us.

On November 17, 1991 Noble and Kay Keating celebrated their 50th an­ niversary. We had a gala affair at Lodge 88 with many of their relatives and friends attending. Count your blessings!

Noble and Kay got married in Tulsa, Oklahoma on this very day November 17, 1941. They have one son, Noble, Jr., and wife Judean, also 2 grandchil­ dren Katheryne and Thadrus of who the grandparents are very proud.

One of their special guests was Hilda Klose! from Schulenburg, Texas. Her husband, Herbert, who is now de­ ceased, started the Knights of Dixie Band. Also their daughter and family Arlene and Frank Bubela and twin sons, Brent and Bert got to hear their uncle Arthur beat the drums and hear the band for the first time.

Out-of-town guests were Noble's rel­ atives; nephew, Don· Joe and Vickie Keating; niece, Mary Ann and husband Don Law, all from Emparia, Kansas; a sister, Eileen Marsh from Lindsay, Oklahoma; niece, Bearleen (Marsh) Wooley of Sulphus, Oklahoma and Kay's cousin, Marion Haven of Hous­ ton.

The Keatings had a delicious dinner catered and their favorite orchestra "The Knights of Dixie" played for the dance. During the evening cocktails were served, which kept everybody on their feet.

A Personal Comment: Noble and Kay are a swell couple. I've known them for many years, in fact, I sold them most of their furniture.

Christmas Tree Is , Of all the decorations of Christmas, the most beloved is the fir tree. Ger­ many is credited with originating the Christmas tree, which was popularized in England by Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, in the 1800s.

The evergreen tree has been used to celebrate the return of the warmer sea­ sons for 5000 years or more.

The Christmas tree was originally a pyramidal erection of wood, decorated with candles and fruit. Often these were carried from home to home.

Later, decorated "paradise" trees were carried about or used in mystery plays of the time. Luther is said to have started the custom of setting candles on a tree. According to the legend, he was so moved by the brightness of the stars that he strove to simulate their light with candles. Actually, the can­ dies are probably inherited from the pyramidal frame that was in use at the time; this lichstock was always decorated with candles and pastries. For a long time, it was common to have both the lichstock and the Christbaum, or Christ tree, displayed together. In time, the lichstock was dropped and the candles were transferred to the Christmas tree.

In Victorian times, the tree was hung with sweetmeats and fruits; these were not removed until Twelfth Night, mak­ ing the dismantling of the tree a joyful event.

The English poet Coleridge spent one Christmas in Germany and described the tree his hosts had installed: "On the evening before Christmas Day, one of the parlors is lighted up by the children, into which the parents must not go; a great yew bough is fas­ tened on the table at a distance from the wall, a multitude of little tapers are fixed to the bough, but not so as to burn it until they are nearly consumed, and colored paper, etc., hangs and flut­ ters from the twigs. Under this bough the children lay out in great order the presents they mean to give their par­ ents ..."

Beloved described by Coleridge in 1798. The candles of Victorian times have given way to safer, more efficient electric lights, just as the gilded nuts and fruits of old have become our familiar glass ornaments. And, each country has added its own unique touch to the tree.

In Denmark, for instance, the holiday a tree is always decorated with tiny Danish flags, as well as other orna­ ments. Norwegians have a charming variation on the traditional tree: the birds' Christmas tree, hung with bits of suets for feathered guests.

In Finland, Advent .candles are often placed on the Christmas tree in prepa­ ration for the holiday season.

Although Christians comprise a small percentage of the population in ' Japan, the holidays are still celebrated by many with decorations, Christmas trees and even Santa Claus. There, the Christmas tree is decorated with small toys and dolls, fluted paper ornaments, and gaily wrapped candies.

Because of the warm climate in Bra­ zil, the Christmas tree in that South American country is always artificial.

In the Central American country of Nicaragua, the tree is a big branch, similar to the branch of an evergreen.

It too, is decorated with ornaments.

Most scholars agree that the Christ­ mas tree made its way to the United States with the early German settlers in Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as the Hessian soldiers who were hired by the British to fight during the American revolution.

Now it is an integral part of the holi­ days, ranging from the smallest artifi­ cial tree in a studio apartment to the huge evergreen that is traditionally placed on the White House lawn each Christmas.

Regardless of the size of the tree, it is a much-loved symbol of the Christ­ mas season, lighting up our homes, towns, stores and cities with its univer­ sal message: Christ is born!

We have good officers in Supreme Lodge and also the editor is doing a fine job with his assistant, Maxine.

I hope some of our members who were in the hospitals are now home feeling much better. With the modern instruments and better doctors' knowl­ edge, things are done much better. Our President Albert Kubala had some kid­ ney stones but with modern times, they exploded them so he didn't have to stay in the hospital. In fact, he went dancing almost the same day it was done. Clem Oujesky had a hard time with his heart but is much better and he is home now. Clem, get well so you can play Taroks with us, again.

We will NOT have game nights for a while until after New Year's but then don't forget first and third Tuesdays will, again, be the nights to play.

Our annual meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, Decem­ ber 1, 1991. We had 79 members and 6 guests registered at this meeting.

Roll call of officers revealed -- all were present.

We had no new members for the month and no deaths were reported.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the min­ utes from our previous month's meet­ ing. These stood approved as read.

All officers' reports were also given.

Sick Committee reported Genieve Monece and Henry Linhart were in the hospital, but we were happy to see Henry at our meeting and he reports he' s feeling good.

No.196, Houston-West The Christmas party of Lodge No. 196 was held on Saturday, December 7 at 3:00 p.m. at the Katy VFW Hall.

Our meeting opened with the pledge to the United States Flag, led by Cheryl Peschke, who presided in lieu of First Vice President Melba Gaydosik.

Delegates to the Convention in Vic­ toria were elected. They are Evelyn Mikeska and Brenda Pike. Alternates are Blanka Nedbalek and Alice Musil.

A decision was made to place an ad in the Convention Brochures; and offi­ cers for 1992 were elected, namely: President--Denny Nedbalek 1st Vice President=Nathan Peschke Secretary=Brenda Pike Treasurer=Evelyn Mikeska Reporter=Alice Musil Youth Leader=Ginger Petter Our new Sales Representative Linda Gonzales was introduced.

The meeting was adjourned and ev­ eryone present enjoyed a delicious meal of turkey and dressing, ham, sweet potatoes, also a variety of salads and desserts. Drinks were furnished by our lodge.

Santa then made his appearance much to the delight of our youth, many

of them had their pictures taken with Santa.

Everyone agreed that this was one of the best-attended parties Lodge No. 196 has had.

Lodge 88 Czech Class Ends Fall Term The evening of December 2, 1991 was another of a series of unforget­ table days for the Czech Class of Lodge 88. It served two purposes: one, was the conclusion of our fall term and, the second, was the completion of the 20th term of study. This covered a period of ten years which had its be­ ginning in 1981.

Our classes are composed of students eager to learn to speak Czech, to hear it spoken, again, and to become better acquainted with the land of their an­ cestors. Those who had visited Czechoslovakia studied the various wordings of personal letters to rela­ tives, wrote notes of thanks for having been shown such cordial hospitality, sent Christmas greetings and also in­ cluded birthday congratulatory notes.

Forty-four students feasted on a vari­ ety of foods, desserts and drinks. This final activity was well-planned by Avis Banks and Angela Prasek (in­ cluding the last cleanup detail of "man-handling" mops and brooms).

Alma Waligura and Sydney Voda helped in making the closing session run ever so smoothly, and we appreci­ ated the willing help of Willie Mae and Jerry Ermis.

Zena Stetka-Howe of Prague, a stew­ ardess of Continental Airlines, told us about conditions in Czechoslovakia and asked to be advised of the sched­ ule of the spring term which begins January 20, 1992.

Following Czech tradition, prior to closing we sang Czech songs accompa­ nied by accordionist Virginia Dornoff.

Corpus Christi Circle Of Women Happenings The Corpus Christi Circle of Women held their third monthly meeting and luncheon Thursday, December 5th.

I've never seen a group of women come together so quickly and thor­ oughly enjoy each other's company.

The fellowship and warmth grows with each meeting. If 1992 is half as good as our beginning in 1991, we can ex­ pect continued growth in numbers and enjoyable monthly meetings.

There were 19 members present out of a total membership of 21. Carrie Veselka and her husband Frank had to make a trip to Victoria where Frank' s brother is undergoing surgery and Lilly Hajek, our treasurer, had a previ­ ous commitment. We missed them both and hope to see them in our next meeting.

Mattie Netek came as a guest and left as a new member. She told me she enjoyed the meeting and is looking forward to future meetings. We are glad to have Mattie join our group.

Our ladies outdid themselves bring­ ing blankets and warm clothing for the

homeless. Norma Baker and her hus­ band Jessie volunteered to take the large collection to Peerless Cleaners where everything will be cleaned be­ fore pick up by the Salvation Army.

Thanks to both Norma and Jessie for taking on this project even though their days are especially busy during this holiday season.

With a minor correction, we adopted by-laws as written up by the officers and By-law Committee Chairwoman, Annie Regmund, at a meeting held No­ vember 19th. Millie Elzner accepted the final committee appointment left to be filled as hostess. So after only three short months, we are well on our way to becoming a well-functioning organi­ zation.

Since no meeting will be held in Jan­ uary, we sang "Happy Birthday" to our January birthday girls as well as those having birthdays in December. There was a large group of us, Lillian Cov­ ill, Milly Elzner and Carrie Veselka in December; and Norma Baker, Mary Ann Elzner, Betty Jurica, Frances Kosarek and Annie Marie Moss in Jan­ uary.

Lillian Covill won our door prize, a cute hen bun warmer donated by Helen Sacky. Our drawings were won by Pauline Novosad, a Christmas towel set donated by Annie Regmund; Betty Jurica, a snow man napkin holder made by yours truly and Lil Hruska, six angels made by Betty Jurica. Lil Hruska and 'Rose Huff brought gifts for future meetings. Helen Sacky also donated a cream pitcher and sugar bowl set for use by the Krouzek.

Before settling down to a very deli­ cious meal, each lady drew an enve­ lope with a member's name on it and had to find the matching person. Each envelope contained four Czechoslova­ kian Christmas postcards donated by the Jerry Elzners and a rug mug made

by Annie Marie Moss. The ladies seemed to like their small gifts very much.

Our next meeting will be held Thurs­ day, February 6, 1992 at 10:30 a.m.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women Our December meeting was called to order by our President Bertha Podhrasky. Vicki Kohn led us to the pledge of the flag and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Louis Taylor, father of Ev­ elyn Cechan.

We brought a donation in an enve­ lope to be divided between Children's Medical Center and Genesis Women Shelter.

Correspondence included a thank you from Vice Mayor Horak for the Brno Sister City Delegations, a thank you from Lillian Moran for the birth­ day card, a thank you from Martha Ko­ cian for get well card and money gift; also a Christmas card from Fannie Konakovsky, and a letter froni the Brady Center asking for volunteers.

Sokol Zizka and Dallas Circle of Czech Women will have their Christ­ mas party Sunday, December 22, 1991 at Sokol. The social will begin at 12:00 noon and dinner will follow at 1:00 p.m., a program will follow. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will play for your enjoyment. Santa Claus will make his appearance to see all good little boys and girls and will check his list for the rest of you.

Your help is needed in decorating, preparing and serving food, help Santa make treat bags for children, setting up and cleaning after the party. If you are unable to help, please bring the follow­ ing: if your name --- begins with A through O, bring desserts; P through R, bring rolls or bread; S through Z, bring chips, dips, relish and vegetable trays.

Youth Letters Snook Youth Decorate For Christmas Dear Readers, Our monthly meeting of Lodge 9, Snook was held on Sunday, December 1, 1991. It was well attended and we had two visitors, Alexis and Monigue Adalpe. After the meeting, we made lollipops, cards and glittered star orna­ ments. Then, we decorated the Christ­ mas tree and the hall for our Christmas program. We also practiced for our program.

Our program was Sunday night and it was great. I enjoyed participating in the skits. I really enjoyed the visit from Santa Claus and the goodies he brought.

Youth Leader Louise Burney said we will have a get-together on December 2, 1991 to decorate the hall for Christ­ mas, each family to bring a snack, we will plan our family youth Christmas party, draw names to exchange gifts at the party. We also decided for mother lodge party that the youth will have a Christmas decorating ornament con­ test, with prizes to be given.

After our meeting activities were skating and playing dominos.

Features "Christmas In Kosice - 1990"

Outside my window on this snowy day, I can see the "blocks of flats," in the distance, looking stately against the dark gray of the lower Tatra moun­ tains. Some cross country skiers are gliding along, on what will one day be a paved highway, and small children are being pulled by their parents on wooden sleds. Two teams of German Shepherds are pulling some older chil­ dren in a race, and all seems "right with the world." I know that I have to take down my Christmas tree, but am reluctant to do this, as it will be taking away my fond memories of my Christ­ mas in Kosice in 1990.

of Czechoslovakia were able to openly celebrate Christmas, although I found that they privately carried on old tradi­ tions within their own homes. Christ­ mas carols were "banned," so the only songs that my students had ever heard before, were "Jingle Bells" and "Silent Night," which they called "Still Night."

All things considered, I think my parties were a success. The students decorated the tree with beautiful orna­ ments - many of them homemade. Be­ sides a silver garland and tinsel, there were crocheted snowflakes, decorated cookies on strings and bells covered with pink and gold foil. Straw birds perched on the tree branches next to "snap on" candles and a green felt mouse- with Merry Christmas across his belly- dangled from a piece of red yarn.

Under the tree is my new doll collec­ tion. Some are in Slovak costumes.

One pair I call Janisko and Marika (Hansel and Gretel). Janisko carries a long handled axe, called a "valushki," which is the symbol of Slovak woods­ men. The other dolls are smaller -some are being used for shadow box pup­ pets, in a renovated shoebox, others are ladies made of traditional cornhusks. They symbolize Slovak hospitality and two of them carry loaves of bread, and one, a coffee grinder. The fourth corn husk lady car­ ries sticks of wood on her back, and holds her child's hand. (All were gifts from my students.)

I had problems buying refreshments for the party, as the store shelves were about empty. Not only were goods in short supply, but people were hoard­ ing, as they were fearful that prices would go sky-high when their Crown went on the world market January 1st.

(Sure enough, it did! Food and cloth­ ing went up almost double, in many in­ stances.) Mr. Imro Santa and Dr. Karro! Guman, Headmasters of the Sport School and Trebisovska, very kindly supplied the refreshments for me. I don't know where they got them, but, at one point, there were 100 bot­ tles of Pepsi Cola and 60 cans of fruit juice, for punch, in my tiny kitchen.

Cookies and a five-layer torte cake with "smotana" (whipped cream) frost­ ing were made by the kitchen ladies of the Sport School.

The teachers stayed mostly in the liv­ ing room - close to the wine bottle, where it's traditional to give toasts to everyone's health. The students gath­ ered in the bedroom, around the Christmas tree, singing with taped car­ ols from my recorder. Since it's the European custom to kiss people on both cheeks, as an affectionate greet­ ing, or to say Good-bye---my cheeks were chapped from all the kisses I re­ ceived. When the parties were over, I thought my Christmas was over, too but, I was wrong. It was only the beginning of my Christmas in Kosice in 1990.

But, when the phone rang in the hall­ way, and one of the students yelled "Dahnka!" I knew it was for me. Milan told me "Never mind ... .I'm coming to get you in half an hour," and hung up.

I hurriedly grabbed a few cakes and a sausage and put them in a bag for my meager gift, and was ready when he came.

The children were crazy with excite­ ment, as kids are, everywhere, on Christmas Eve. Jana was turning cart­ wheels in the living room and Peter was running around with matches­ wanting to light candles. (He normally wasn't allowed to touch matches!) The tree was on a revolving stand- that went round and round, endlessly play­ ing "Silent Night." Viera looked like a typical American suburban housewife, in blue jeans and pony. tail - standing at the kitchen counter dipping pieces of fish in eggs, crumbs and flour, be­ fore deep frying it.

We sat down at the kitchen table, as Peter lit candles and turned out the light. I could see through the lace cur­ tains, other families in surrounding apartments going through the same holy rituals. The children's faces glowed in the darkness and they were silent as Milan gave us each a plate with a large oblatky wafer on it, with a clove of garlic, which we dipped in honey. Viera said, "This will give you health and sweetness in the new year!"

This was followed by a bowl of sau­ erkraut soup, which she ladled out from a tureen in the center of the table.

(Each family makes homemade sauer­ kraut in the Fall, and it is fermented in crocks, until Christmas time.) The next course was the delicious fish and po­ tato salad. Milan said that this repre­ sented Jesus multiplying the fish and feeding the multitudes. After this, we went back into the living room for cookies and for opening of gifts. (They were from the Baby Jesus - not from Santa Claus!)

The children got Lego toys and a few nice books, including a Bible, which was "banned" until two years ago.

They gave me some sexy black stock­ ings, a corn husk doll and two beauti­ ful (and expensive) gold demi-tass coffee cups. I was embarrassed at giv­ ing my meager gifts of sausage and cakes, when they had given me the greatest gift of all the gift of sharing their family love with me at Christ­ mas time. What a sweet Christmas it was! (I regret not being able to find film for my camera - so have only words to describe it.)

The next day I spent with Imro Santa, the Headmaster of Trebisovska and his wife, Marika, who is a Doctor.

Their two children, Ingrid and Robert, were home from college for the holi­ day. Ingrid is a student at Humboldt University in Berlin and she gave me the unique gift, of some pieces of the Berlin Wall, which she helped to break down. They are painted green and gray on the Western side and plain concrete on the Eastern side. What a wonderful historic remembrance!

They had a chicken dinner, just for me, and some of Imro 's delicious homemade wine. We had a Slovak-En­ glish and German dictionary on the table and used them throughout the meal. Ingrid was the only one who knew English and she did her best to translate for us. (Sometimes she had to refer to German, first.) Through In­ grid, Imro told me that he had been a student at Pushkin University (in Mos-

cow) for a whole year, and had never been invited to a Russian home! He knew what it was like, to be alone on a holiday in a foreign land.

After dinner, Marika rummaged through her linen cupboard, and pre­ sented me with a lovely lace table run­ ner. (She said that she was waiting for the right person to give it to.) Once again, I felt family love, as the Santas lined up to kiss me on each cheek and wish me "Vesele Vianoce" and "Stastlivy Novy Roc." (Merry Christ­ mas and Happy New Year.)

In spite of the fact, that Czechoslova­ kia has been a "Godless" country for more than 40 years - I found more Christmas spirit of true giving in Kosice - than in many places where people are regular churchgoers. They don't have much in the way of mate­ rial things, but I've been overwhelmed with their "gifts from the heart." I think that I received far more than I could ever give in return, this Christ­ mas. The kind people of Kosice, Czechoslovakia seem to have every­ thing that money can never buy. Their pockets may be empty, but they are rich in spirit. They showed me the true meaning of Christmas .

"The Kosice Astrodome"

By Donna Moran Today, I'm bone-weary from teach­ ing the Sport School kids how to play baseball, and am resting up to go to a Polka Dance tomorrow evening. My students have been asking me, Jor a long time, to teach them how to play baseball. They have every kind of sports equipment at the school, except a bat and ball ....So, I figured that the next best thing I could do, was to teach them how to play kickball, using base­ ball rules.

I was scheduled to do this, on Friday, at one o' clock - in the parking lot in back of the school. At 1:45, I went into the teachers' room and announced to Karrol Gumann, the Headmaster, and the teachers gathered there, but I was praying for rain, so I wouldn't have to keep my promise. (I'm a person who usually flunked gym class in my youth, so I'd rather tell the students how to play, rather than take part, my­ self!)

They all laughed, and one of them said, "No chance of that. Look out­ side!" (The sun was shining, without a cloud in the sky!) Exactly 10 minutes later, it started to rain! A real down­ pour! Everyone was shocked, and so was I! One of the teachers crossed her­ self, and Mr. Gumann said I was a "Miracle Lady," and would I -please give him next week's lottery number?

The rain didn't stop our game, though, as Karrol said we should do it in the gym, instead.

We got off to a slow start, as not all of the kids are too swift in English, and didn't understand the rules. One of the girl runners kept trying to outrun the person on the bases ahead of her, to get to home, first! One of the boys kicked the ball up into the rafters and ran to catch it, himself!

for me. Every time I yelled, "Strike!"

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Havárie elektroinstalace způsobila, že

Brno získá nejkrásnějšího GRANA Nejprve došlo na brněnské Nové rad­ nici k havárii elektroinstalace. Pak se přišlo na to, že stavba se hýbá, a že tedy bude muset být celá budova renovována. Organizace této renovace byla vymyšlena-- na rozdíl od mnoha předchozích -- tentokrát šťastně. Bylo totiž ustanoveno, že dřív, než budou položeny nové inženýrské sítě a ob­ noveno elektrické vedení, uskuteční se tu stavebně historický a pak restaurátorský průzkum. Aby se předešlo eventuálním nenahraditelným škodám.

Jak bylo dojednáno, tak se také stalo. Po výzkumu zdiva a základů PhDr. Petrem Kroupou z odboru kultury Úřadu města Brna můžeme v současnédobě potkat na brněnské rad-

nici dvojici mladých akademických malířů -- Jana a Kateřinu Knorovi -- je­ jichž specializací je restaurátorství.

Pozorně na různých místech budovy odstraňují se svýmispolupracovníky -­ Liborem Jarošem a Zdeňkem Turečkem -- omítku a nacházejí pod ní vzácnémalby. Jak jste daleko a co jste už objevili? -- ptáme se jich.

"Nejdřív jsme museli samozřejme pečlivě prostudovat historické prameny, které nám řekly, co asi tak zhruba můžemepři své práci na radnici hledat a očekávat. Letos jsme restaurátorsky prozkoumali reprezentační prostory I. poschodí, a to Zasedací (dříve Sněmovní) síň, 1. schodiště, zasedací síň městské rady, sňatkovou síň s její šatnou a sakristii dřívějšího dominikánského kláštera.

Počátkem příštího roku budeme pokračovat zejména v bývalém Tribunálním domě.

V hlavním sále zastupitelstva sondáž prokázala stav originální malby od Daniela Grana a Gaetana Fantiho z roku 1735, námětem glorifikující

Moravu. Kromě fyzických sond jsme tu použili také spektrální, chromatografické analýzy odebraných vzorků malby, které prokázaly pigmenty původních barev a jejich pojítko i následné fixáže ztmavlých přemaleb. Dílo bylo poprvé restaurováno v r. 1888, později však dvakrát přemalováno. Zdá se nám zatím nejvýznamnějším objevem, že tyto originální freskové malby byly původně vedeny v zářivých světlých tónech. Je to v detailu vysoce krásná výtvarná práce. Bude-li Gran restaurován, získá tak Brno nejkrásnější barokní freskovou malbu.

Ve sňatkové síni je 31 velmi cenných, erbů hlavních představitelů moravských stavů z 16. století. Son­ dami jsme zjistili opět několik vrstev přemaleb a jasně temperovou barev­ nost jejich originálu. Původní zlaté a stříbrné detaily byly později pojednány černou barvou a tím značně znedhod­ noceny.

Průzkumem v předsíni této síně byla pod dnešní nevkusnou omítkou s

šedomodrým nátěrem na stěnách ob­ jevena pozdně barokní výzdoba z konce 18. stol. jemného dekoru, korespondující s malbou na stropě Josefa Winterhaltera z roku 1777, na níž zvěčnil založení moravských zemskýchdesek. A v salónku nevěstyv okenních špaletách sondy též prokáza­ ly linkový dekor v jemném pastelovém koloritu.

Z dochovaných pramenů a starých fotografií z 19. století jsme věděli, že také v zasedací síni městské rady by se měly nacházet barokní malby. Pásový odkryv a sondy potvrdily pravdivost těchto záznamů. Figurální malba pod omítkou, zakomponovaná do iluzivní architektury a zpodobující zasedání zemského soudu, je však v dosti špatném stavu, který způsobila koncem minulého století do těchto pro­ stor umístěná městská vývařovna.

Bude tedy záležet na rozhodnutí zastupitelstva, zda tyto malby opět ožijí."

A few of them would do a little "soft shoe" shuffle dance, before kicking the ball and would run the bases in long leaps, like gazelles. The pitcher, named Martin, who was a sharp­ shooter, pretended that he had tobacco in his cheek and started to throw some "funny" balls. He'd wind up, like he'd seen pro players do on TV - with his leg in the air -- only he was holding a volleyball, instead of a baseball! Then he'd throw "spinner" balls, that, just before they got to Home plate, would curve sharply to the left or right. This got a few strikes!

Laughing at the so-called "batters" missing the ball, Martin shouted, "Dis is da Kosice Astrodome!"

We played for more than two hours, and a good time was had by all, except that I forgot to choose a score­ keeper ...and nobody could remember how many runs had been made, so we didn't know who won! It didn't seem to matter, as they all left with smiles on their faces, and, Pavel - who was one of the gazelle-like runners, sai,.d, "Ve like bayse bowl...Can ve play next veek? Maybe, by den, ve find a schtick to hit with."

So, today, I'm soaking my sore feet and am being a "couch potato" resting up for next week's game in the Kosice Astrodome. Maybe we'll find a "schtick," by then.

By dialing (900) 680- 7771 and punching in the first five letters of a generic or brand-name drug, you will hear a tape of two to five minutes ap­ proved by the PDR's panel of doctors and pharmacists. The service costs $1.50 per minute. (If more than one drug has the same first five letters, the caller will hear a choice of the actual drug names.) The tapes include in­ structions on proper dosages and when to take more than 500 different drugs from Achromycin, an antibiotic, to Zantac, an ulcer drug. The recordings also discuss common drug side effects and potenially hazardous interactions when patients take more than one drug at the same time.

*** General Motors last week told con­ sumers that it is recalling 890,000 Chevrolets and Pontiacs, many with defective shoulder belts that could fail to lock during a crash. GM has already notified dealers and affected owners, but second or third owners of a re­ called car might want to contact a GM dealership directly for a free fix. The cars that were recalled because of the shoulder-belt defect include all 1989 and 1990 Chevrolet Berettas and Cor­ sicas as well as some 1988 models.

Many 1991 Chevy Cavaliers and Pon­ tiac Sunbirds are being recalled for po­ tential shoulder-belt problems, too; 1989 and 1990 Cavaliers and Sunbirds are unaffected.
