Re­ member that it's time to be sending your recommendation(s) for additions, changes and deletions, signed, to our four standing SPJST Committees, namely: By-laws, Finance, Insurance and Publication. Lodges or individual members may send their recommendation(s) to these committees; the secretaries will submit all accepted and rejected recommen­ dations to be published in our Vestnik.

Also, remember, our SPJST Society is membership-owned and that is why we are so democratically organized. All By-law recommendation(s) must be submitted 60 days before the conven­ tion (to be voted on) - according to Ar­ ticle 20(d) of our SPJST By-law; which means that April 15, 1992 is the deadline for submitting the recom­ mendation(s) to the SPJST By-law Secretary. Are you asked sometimes: "Why a fraternal society?" The editor would like to mention that a fraternal society is an association of persons drawn to­ gether by a common interest for the purpose of obtaining for themselves certain objectives or certain benefits mutually desired. Men and women have been forming and joining frater­ nal benefit societies since the begin­ ning of civilization. All down through the ages, men and women of every walk of life and in every station in life have been willing to give of their time, energy and property in order to form and belong to fraternal benefit associa­ tions. So, the question naturally arises: Why? If we can find the answer to the question of why men and women, not only of this present generation, but of all ages, have formed, joined and be­ longed to Fraternal Societies, we shall have the answer to the subject of "Why a fraternal society?"

Surely each of you can think of a great number of reasons why men and women join fraternal benefit organiza­ tions. It is likely that you each have your own personal reason, and perhaps a good reason, for joining the fraternal benefit society of your choice. During the latter part of the 19th century, a great number of fraternal benefit socie­ ties were formed in these United States. No doubt, the one impelling reason for the birth of this large crop of fraternal benefit societies was due to the fact that men and women found it necessary to cooperate, assist each other and work together for the accom-

plishment of a specific objective. As a very simple and crude illustration, I am sure that a great number of you are familiar with neighborhood barn activities that took place in communities all around our country during the latter half of the 19th century. A man found it impossible to raise the logs, place them one on the other to the height re­ quired for storing his crops, etc.

Hence, his neighbors would gather and help him do the job, and this sort of thing went on from farm to farm throughout the various communities.

However, coming down to our own day and age, suppose we ask ourselves the question: "Why did I join the par­ ticular fraternal benefit society in which I hold membership today?"

Perhaps a friend invited you to join a certain fraternal society. You ex­ pressed confidence in your friend by becoming interested in his or her own zeal for this particular fraternal associ­ ation, and you "joined up." This is a reasonable and laudible excuse for cer­ tainly there is nothing objectionable about a person being influenced by his friends and associates as long as that influence is in the direction of encour­ aging membership in a fraternal bene­ fit society. Then again, some people join fraternal benefit societies because of loneliness and an intense desire for companionship.

An individual, in many cases, becomes very lonely in­ deed if he finds himself in a place where he has no close associates with whom he may share moments of sor­ row and moments of joy, and this is a very fine reason for joining a fraternal benefit society.

Perhaps the desire for fellowship has influenced more people to join frater­ nal benefit societies than any other particular reason. Good wholesome fellowship of men and women having common interests, common desires and common objectives is a necessity for clean, wholesome living. Men and women naturally seek the fellowship of others having common ideas, and holding to mutual principles and fel­ lowship is the very basis of mutual un­ derstanding, goodwill, and good neighbor practices among men and women of any given community. The various fraternal benefit societies pro­ vide opportunity and the setting for the type of satisfying fellowship that re­ sults in peaceful, pleasant and happy relations among people in any given sommunity.

No doubt, a great number of people join fraternal benefit societies because of an inner urge to render service to their fellow man, and this is indeed a most laudible reason for joining a fra­ ternal society. In this age of hurry and bustle, with special emphasis on speed in work, communication and travel, it is indeed refreshing and, in fact, re­ stores one's faith in mankind, to find now and then a person sincerely dedi­ cated to the desire of rendering assis­ tance and unselfish service to other individuals and, of course, a fraternal benefit society is the best way in pro­ viding the opportunity for one to render service to others.

Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 .. December 25, 1991

TO ALL INSURANCE MEMBERS:

The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting Oc­ tober 1, 1991 through December 25, 1991.

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

A donation of $1.00 per member is suggested for this drive. Any donation amount would certainly be appreciated to help defray the cost of higher educa­ tion.

Lodge No. 29, Taylor Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 met Sunday, November 10, 1991 at 4:00 p.m.

Nikki Rieger presented the flag and led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We remained standing for a few moments of silence for our deceased Sister Alphia Burgess.

We then had roll call of officers. The minutes were read and approved.

We had one member, Juanita Horne, transfer from Lodge No. 88 - Houston to our lodge.

The treasurer's report was also given.

We will have our Christmas party and a short meeting Sunday, December 15 at 3:00 p.m.

The youth club will present a Christ­ mas program and then Santa Claus will arrive. We will have a covered dish supper and each member is asked to bring two dishes; a meat, vegetable and/or dessert.

Then we had election of officers. Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi Dear Members: The annual meeting for Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi will be held on Sun­ day, December 15, starting at 2:00 p.m. This is the time to elect officers and delegates for the 1992 convention, therefore, members are urged to attend this meeting to voice their opinion.

The meetings are held at the SPJST Lodge No. 79-Sokol Hall located on 5502 Kostoryz Road in Corpus Christi.

There will be NO "svacina" this time; instead, we will have a combined Christmas program and covered dish supper with the Corpus Christi Sokol later in the afternoon. The doors at the hall will open at 3:00 p.m. for that oc­ casion.

The youth dubbers will present a program and memorial service for departed members. Also on the pro­ gram are the Sokol gymnasts.

There will be a covered dish supper afterwards for which each family is asked to bring enough food for them­ selves and any guests they bring, sup­ per will be served around 6:00 p.m.

After the meal, Santa Claus is ex­ pected to visit bringing bags of goodies.

May they rest in peace.

Brother Milan read correspondence from Brother Jerry Mikulas on the number of delegates we will have. He also reported he attended the By-law meeting in Temple and there will be another meeting in December.

Sister Rose Steinman reported Sister Jeanie Mason is our "Fraternalist of the Year." Good luck, Jeanie! She also reminded us of donations to the Schol­ arship Fund.

Brother Tal Milan reported new members, Breanna Durham and Shanie Brandon, and Sister Mary Renfro re­ ported on all the additional insurance she sold. Keep up the good work, and we welcome our new members.

We were happy to have Sister Maria Prill in our midst, after just receiving a new eye last Wednesday. Her daugh­ ter, Sister Eva Dockery, came in from Arizona to take care of her and she said, "she is doing so well; she doesn't need rne;" but I know her mother is glad to have her. Take good care!

Brother Tal and Sister Lesli Milan have been doing volunteer work for Toys for Tots at the Angel Tree Pro­ gram at the Salvation Army.

We were reminded of the Metroplex Lodges' Christmas party which will be hosted by Lodge No. 180 in Burleson, and our Christmas party Thursday, De­ cember 19 at 7:30 p.m. Sisters are asked at bring your favorite goodies for the social following Santa' s visit.

Brother Tai Milan reported on the SPJST State Volleyball Tournament in Temple. He said they all really en­ joyed it, and came home with first place trophy and $50.00 for their lodge. They are looking forward to.the next one and hope to have more teams.

Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleve­ land reported she and the youth club went to Casa Manana on November 15 to see "Aladin," which was enjoyed by all, and yesterday 19 youth and 4 adults attended the District III Holi­ day-in-the-Park and reported a won­ derful time. The cold weather didn't bother them a bit; on December 13, they will go to see "Here's Love" at Casa Manana.

We extend our congratulations to Ky Cleveland who was elected vice presi­ dent at the District III meeting for the youth club.

Sister Eva Dockery extended a spe­ cial thank you to Sister Anna Johnson for always sending her pictures of her mother and articles of interest.

We extend our get well wishes to Sister Nicole Johnson who is home re­ cuperating after surgery.

We were all sorry to hear of the pass­ ing away of Sister Anna Hosek. She was an inspiration to so many of us in our younger years. May her memory live among us.

Lodge No. 161, Jourdanton Lodge No. 161 held its regular quarterly meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 1, 1991 at 11:45 a.m. at Julian's Restaurant in Jourdan­ ton. Fifteen members and six visitors were in attendance.

Chairman Donald Valchar welcomed everyone and recognized the visitors, namely: Virginia Valchar, Cherri House, Eric Lloyd House, Tiffany House, Mike Hoggard and Brandon Hoggard.

We need working officers willing to give of their time when things need to be done. We don't need officers who delegate jobs to be done by other peo­ ple and only do it with their handout. I know some of you are good workers and volunteers, so keep up the good work which some of the outgoing offi­ cers did.

Lodge No. 179, Warrenton Dear Members: The members of Lodge No. 179 met on November 14th for their Thanks­ giving supper. A good turnout was there to enjoy the turkey and the "works." A few more members would make this a great party.

Aubrey Eichler was accepted as a new member - a transfer from Houston SPJST Lodge. Mr.. Eichler will be liv­ ing in Carmine upon his retirement.

We are glad to get these members.

The Christmas meeting will be on December 12th. The lodge will furnish ham and the members are to bring side dishes; also gifts will be exchanged, the men bring a man' s gift and ladies a gift for a lady. A Christrmas tree will be lit up for everyone to come and enjoy.

The same officers were re-elected to serve next year. Mr. Arnold Peters was elected to be our delegate to the com­ ing convention.

Ennis Sewing Circle Has everyone eaten enough turkey and dressing to last until Christmas?

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiv­ ing.

The Circle met November 14th. Pres­ ident Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. Thirty-three members and four visitors were welcomed. Our visi­ tors were Joe Vlk, Jerry Kohn, Erben Crone and Bill Foit.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited.

The minutes were read and approved as read. The treasurer's report was given and approved as given.

It was good to have Sisters Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell back with us after being absent for a few months. Sister Mary Sebestik relayed greetings from Sister Ann Zvolanek.

Bob Zvolanek was slightly "under the weather."

Sincere sympathy is expressed to Sister Hattie Moucka, Adell Vlk, Fran­ ces (Joe) Kudrna and Dorothy (Louis) Kudrna. Their aunt, Millie Kudrna, died recently.

A quilt was quilted for Sister Annie Mullins. Sister Libbie Wisniewski do­ nated a sugar and creamer set and a tray for the silverware. Our "white ele­ phant" sale was very successful. The ticket sales for the quilt were good.

Sister Bessie Laznovsky was the lucky winner of the quilt.

The present officers will continue to serve for 1992. The officers were voted in unanimously. They are as fol­ lows: President -- Sadie Kubin, Vice President -- Emilie Harrison, Secretary -- Linda Trojacek, Treasurer -- Mil­ dred Trojacek.

This is "flu" season, so take good care of yourselves. My son, Sam, who was visiting me during the Thanksgiv­ ing holidays, spent most of his visit nursing the "flu." Luckily, it hit him later in the day, after dinner.

We will NOT have a meeting in Jan­ uary. Our next meeting will be Febru­ ary 13th.

"Christmas Around The World" In Austin (Revised Story) The Austin Czech Historical Associ­ ation and the Lakeway Resort and Conference Center extend an invita­ tion to anyone who lives in or is visit­ ing Austin during this holiday season to stop by the trainland areas of the Noel Store and Lone Star Illusions in Barton Creek Mall to view the Czech Christmas tree, part of Austin' s first annual "Christmas Around the World" celebration.

The Czech tree, one of ten different "ethnic trees" decorated by various groups from the Austin area, is on dis­ play between November 22 and De­ cember 24, 1991. It has been adorned in the traditional manner with fruit, nuts, bright red apples, cookies, wal­ nuts wrapped in shiny foil, candy, can­ dies, and (albeit a local addition) popcorn; underneath is a manger scene. For the children here is the fun of experiencing a ride on a miniature train around and through the various decorated trees.

The Austin celebration of "Christmas Around the World" is modeled after a similar longstanding exhibit at the Mu­ seum of Science and Industry in Chi­ cago and most certainly is destined to become an Austin tradition as well.

We with the Austin Czech Historical Association hope that all of you will be able to come by to experience our presentation of a little bit of Czecho­ slovakia in Texas.

Box 85 West, Texas 76691 Dear Editor, My son, John, and I have just finished the Czech language class taught by Mr. Souchek, sponsored by Lodge 88. I must say we enjoyed every minute of the interesting lessons of­ fered by our most informative instruc­ tor. During our IO-week class I came across this "Moravian Christmas Cookie" recipe published in a new magazine "Family Fun" winter 1991, and decided to try it and share our results with our classmates. Much to my surprise we found many people who shared a love for this type of cookie.

I would like to share this Holiday recipe with other VESTNIK readers.

Moravian Christmas Cookies

DISTRICT II The Spring Meeting of District II will take place Sunday, vlarch 15, 1~92 at Seaton (Star Hall) Lodge No. 47.

1 cup molasses 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening *** 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda DISTRICT V I 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves The Spring Meeting in District V 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon will be held Sunday, karch 8, 1992 at 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice Lodge No. 88, Houston, 1435 Beall 3 1/2 cups flour (and extra flour for Street. rolling out the dough) -SPJSTIn a saucepan, blend molasses, shor­ tening, and brown sugar over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda and spices. Transfer the mixture to the large bowl of an electric mixer and gradually add the flour. Mix until all the flour is incorporated. Turn the dough out onto a sheet of waxed paper, pat it into a smooth flat cake, and wrap it as if it were a package. Refrigerate for at least an hour (the dough may be left refrigerated for several days --­ just let it stand at room temperature for half an hour so it will be soft enough to roll).

When you 're ready to cut and bake the cookies, set the oven to 350 degrees, line a cookie sheet with tin foil (shinny side down), and cut the dough in half. On a slightly floured board, roll out the first half to about an eighth of an inch. Using cookie cut­ ters, stamp out the desired shapes.

Scoop up the scraps, roll, and cut.

Proceed in the same way with the second half of the dough.

Bake in the preheated oven for eight minutes, or until firm. Let stand for a few minutes, then cool on wire racks.

Store in an airtight tin. This recipe makes about six dozen 2-inch cookies.

Lodge 66 Youth Club will be in charge of the grab bags for prizes. On Satur­ day we go to Six Flags.

Money for our candy sale needs to be turned in as soon as possible.

Under new business, we discussed our Christmas party for the lodge. We will help collect canned goods for Cari tas. We will also bring gifts for door prizes.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club met in November with President E.J. Pechal calling the meeting to order. Minutes were approved as read. There were thirty-five members, one visitor and several adults present.

Our Christmas program was planned for December 8th at 3:00 p.m. consist­ ing of a memorial service, a nativity scene, singing groups and, of course, good old Santa. Practice was sched­ uled for December 6th and 7th.

Youth members were also reminded to bring two canned goods to the De­ cember 8th program for the needy fam­ ily project.

The highway trash pickup was planned to start at 9:00 a.m. on De­ cember 7th.

Finally, December 13th at 7:00 p.m., our parents will be honored at a spe­ cial banquet at which members will exchange gifts.

Door prizes were won by John Hoelscher and Laura Gibson. Novem­ ber birthdays were Thomas Gibson, Kayla Michalka and Shannon Pechal.

Assistant Youth Leader Judy Pechal also celebrated a special birthday.

Many thanks to all the youth, mem­ bers, parents and friends who sold and bought Tom Watts products. We have almost reached our goal.

Jn fllrnmrinm Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of our Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Ber­ nard, Texas on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sym­ pathy to the bereaved family of our lodge sister MARY JO NOVOSAD HLAVINKA, age 63, of East Bernard, who died Tuesday, October 15, 1991 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, follow­ ing a lengthy illness. She was born April 4, 1928 in Eagle Lake to Paul Thomas and Callie Mary Martin Novosad.

Funeral services for Sister Mary Jo of East Bernad were held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. from Holy Cross Catholic

Church in East Bernard, with Rev. Gerald Cernoch officiating. Burial fol­ lowed in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

A memorial service was held in the morning services of the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, October 20th.

As a child, she lived in Bay City and Houston, before the family settled in East Bernard. After attending the Uni­ versity of Houston, she married Wil­ liam Joseph Hlavinka of East Bernard on June 8, 1949.

She was involved in community ser­ vice for her whole life, and was a member of both, the First United Methodist Church and Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was a Confrater­ nity of Christian Doctrine leader and life member, and district regent of the Catholic Daughters of America, scout den mother, patron and volunteer for the arts and other organizations in Wharton County. In 1984, she became co-owner with Ann Way Kramr of Mary's Dress Shop in Wharton.

Survivors include husband, William Joseph Hlavinka of East Bernard; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Hlavinka of Houston, Christopher Hlavinka of Los Angelos, California, Dr. Timothy and Leslie Hlavinka of San Antonio, Stephen Hlavinka of East Bernard, Tobias and Rhonda Hlavinka of East Bernard; sisters, Frances Cordelle of Houston, Pauline Graves of East Ber­ nard, Lucille Coody of Weatherford; five grandchildren, six brothers-in­ law, five sisters-in-law; also 24 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were Edwin Zapolak, J.D. Kuebler, Patrick Dye, Ed Woulum, George Keprta, Mark Kubala, John Kramr, Joe Cordelle, Chuck Fuhs and Joe Graves.

Honorary pallbearers were her nieces, nephews and spouses.

Mary Jo, having provided an early ex­ ample of ecumenism, always retaining the firm religious roots of her youth, while embracing lovingly, her adopted Holy Mother Church. In so doing, and in educating, guiding and opening her home and heart to countless children of the community, she became the glue that bound together diverse individuals in ways who can only begin to be per­ ceived now that she is no longer with us.

May our lodge Sister Mary Jo rest in eternal peace, and may her memory re­ main with us forever.

Funeral services for John L. Kristof were at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 29 from the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Stone of the Caldwell Brethren Church officiating.

Bural was in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery.

Brother Kristof married Mary Zalmanek on November 29, 1927 in the Providence community. He was a retired farmer. and a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing dominoes.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kristof of Caldwell; five sons, John J. Kristof and wife Barbara of Plano, Franklin Kristof and wife Joyce of Caldwell, Jay W. Kristof and wife Marijane of Angleton, Raymond Kristof and wife Carolyn of Dallas and Edward Kristof and wife Pamela of Caldwell; three daughters, Mary Jo McMutrey of Dallas, Jane Stephens and husband Jim of Angleton, Margie Muzny and husband Ray of Caldwell; a brother, Emil J. Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell wish to ex­ press our sincere sympathy to the be­ reaved family of our departed lodge brother LUDWIG WALTER URBANOVSKY, 73, of Deanville, who died Tuesday morning, October 29, 1991 at his resi­ dence.

Brother Urbanovsky was born Sep­ tember 2, 1918 in the Volney commu­ nity of Burleson County to the late John J. and Julia Jakubik Urbanovsky.

He was baptized August 15, 1920 in the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church in Snook and later attended the Volney community schools. He was confirmed on September 17, 1933 in the Czech­ Moravian Church in Cooks Point and on November 21, 1939 he married Lydia Brinkman in the Birch commu­ nity area. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Deanville and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell. Brother Urbanovsky was employed with Alcoa of Rockdale as a foreman on the pot line for over 20 years. He was a farmer, rancher and his hobbies included fishing, hunting

and rock collecting. His family said he had a deep love for his family and was a devoted family man.

He was preceded in death by his par­ ents; an infant sister, Lillie Urbanovsky; six brothers, Henry, Emil, Frank, John, Kverin V. and Al­ bert Urbanovsky.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lydia Urbanovsky; one daugh­ ter and son-in-law, Laverne and Nor­ man Boehme of Manor; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donnie and Nancy Urbanovsky of Elgin and Elwood and Janet Urbanovsky of Manor; three sis­ ters and brothers-in-law, Vlasta and Raymond Cedidla of Caldwell; Lenora and George Chmelar of Caldwell and Julia Polansky of Austin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Willie and Annie Urbanovsky of Dime Box, Joe and Velma Urbanovsky of Lyons; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Urbanovsky and Albina Urbanovsky of Cooks Point, Agnes Urbanovsky of Caldwell; one brother-in-law, Alvin and wife Tracy Brinkman of Brenham; seven grand­ children and two great-grand children.

Funeral services for Brother Mathew "Math" Jetelina of Boling were held Monday from Holy Family: Catholic Church in Wharton, with Rev. Ralph Baidoo officiating. Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. Rosary was recited prior to the Funeral Mass.

Brother Jetelina was born October 29, 1898 in Lovice, Czechoslovakia to Cyril and Frances Polucek Jetelina.

He was a resident of Boling for the past 25 years and was a former resi­ dent of East Bernard and Fayetteville.

He married Mary Vaclavik on January 10, 1922 in Ellinger, Texas and she preceded him in death on June 28, 1986. He was also preceded in death by seven sisters.

He was a retired farmer and a mem­ ber of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton.

Survivors include three daughters, Elenora Socha of Galveston, Elsie Andel of Boling and Mary Sebesta of Spring; two brothers, John Jetelina and Joe Jetelina, both of Lane City; 22 grandchildren and 27 great­ grandchildren.

On behalf of our membership from Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home, we wish to express sincere sympathy to the be­ reaved family of JOE V. MLADENKA, who passed away at his residence on November 7, 1991 at age 82.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hubert Kealy of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Houston and Rev. Joe Dunagan of Hospice on Monday, November 11 at the Forest Park Fu­ neral Home. Burial followed at Forest Park West Cemetery, Houston.

Pallbearers were nephews, Dominic, Bill, Daniel, Robert and Philip Mladenka and Jesse Fowler.

Brother Mladenka was born July 6, 1909 at Wied, Lavaca County, Texas to Jos. and Ludmila (Jalufka) Mladenka.

On September 28, 1937 he was mar­ ried to Della Valigura at St. Mary's Catholic Church near Hallettsville.

He was a farmer and rancher most of his life. The last few years before his retirement, he was employed by the Harris County Utility Department.

He is survived by his wife, Della (Valigura) Mladenka; daughter, Rose­ mary Gendusa of Bellaire; three sons, Henry of Pattison, Kenneth of College Station and Jimmy of Katy; four granddaughters, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his mother on February 8, 1951; his father on September 5, 1966; two brothers, Raymond Mladenka on November 26, 1977 and Leon Mladenka on January 15, 1978; also a sister, Henrietta.

May he rest in eternal peace and may his memory remain with us forever.

Expression of Sympathy We, the 1991 Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 133, San Antonio wish to express our sympathy to the family of FRANCES KUTIL -1897-1991.

Frances Kutil was born November 17, 1897. In 1905, she came to the United States from Lipa, Moravia, with her father and mother, Joe and Frances Staglik and two younger sis­ ters, Annie and Mary. The family set­ tled in Yoakum, Texas. Her two brothers, Jerome and Charley, were born in Shiner. Later, the family moved to George West to farm.

On August 10, 1927, Francis married Louis Kutil and moved to Dallas. Fran­ cis and Louis had two sons, Charlie Jerry and Joseph Edward. In 1945, the familv moved to San Antonio, Texas.

Frances Kutil' s Czech heritage in­ cluded baking the pastries and family dishes that her family and friends en­ joyed. Throughout her life she worked to make life enjoyable for her family.

Francis was a member of SPJST since February 3, 1929. She would have been 94 years old on November 17. but she passed away on November 7. 1991.. Graveside services were held November 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Mission

Burial Park South, San Antonio, Texas.

Survivors include her son, Charlie Jerry Kutil of San Antonio; her brother, Charley Staglik of Dallas; sis­ ter, Mary Grube of Yoakum and four grandchildren.

Letter to Editor Houston, Texas Dear Mr. Sefcik: I've recently returned to the U.S. after teaching English for a year in Kosice, Czechoslovakia. I was spon­ sored by Education for Democracy and will be taking another teaching assign­ ment in Czechoslovakia as soon as I obtain funds for my airfare.

I've played the clarinet for several years in the SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston and am staying with a friend Karen Brady, who is a member of the lodge.

I wonder if you can use the enclosed article in the Vestnik? I wrote it in November 1990 - a month after I ar­ rived in Kosice. I've also written other articles (i.e. "Christmas in Kosice-") that might interest your readers. I've kept a diary and hope to find a pub­ lisher who will publish a book I'm writing about my experiences in Czechoslovakia.

I've been a free lance writer for many years and have had articles pub­ lished in the Houston Chronicle, Chris­ tian Science Monitor, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.

"The Mickey Mouse Teacher of Kosice" (An American Teacher in Czechoslovakia)

Most people here, have never met an American, before, and have never been allowed to leave the Soviet Union until the Velvet Revolution of Novem­ ber 17th, 1989. They have been very kind and welcoming to me, and call me the "Mickey Mouse Teacher," for reasons that I'll explain, later. After forty years of Communism behind the Iron Curtain, they are eager to learn all they can about America and the "out­ side world." In turn, I'd like to intro­ duce American readers to Kosice - my new "home, away from home."

Where is it?

Kosice is located about 50 miles east of the Soviet Union and Poland. (Some people here call it the "Tail of the dog" - since it is so far from Prague, the Capitol.) It is 12 miles north of the Hungarian border and about 200 miles from Budapest. It is in the foothills of the Lower Tatra Mountains and has a climate with four seasons, similar to central Michigan and other northern states - except that, in winter, it gets dark about 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

In summer, this is reversed. It stays light until about 9 o' clock at night. It has a population of about 200,000.

One hundred years ago, Kosice was a part of Hungary and the Austro­ Hungarian Empire. In 1918 this changed, and the Slovaks formed a new country with the Czech nation and called it Czechoslovakia. After World War II (against their will) they were "liberated" by the Russians and made a part of the Soviet Union. With so­ called Velvet Revolution, they "untied the knot" with Russia, and are trying to form a new government, based upon the principles of Democracy.

Until October 13th, 1990, I had never heard of Kosice, Czechoslova­ kia, and didn't have the vaguest idea where it could be found on the map.

That's when Ann Gardner, the Direc­ tor of Education for Democracy, called and asked me it I would accept a posi­ tion teaching English, there. Most of the people here live in dreary concrete Soviet - style apart­ ment buildings, that were built around 1965, when the East Slovakian Iron­ works was established and the town became a manufacturing center. They are big, flat roofed rectangles - with no beauty or originality (except inside the homes-), They call them "blocks of flats" or "housing estates" and are usu­ ally six to eight stories high with tiny elevators, that they call "lifts," and are frequently "out of service." Since the buildings were State owned, they were poorly maintained and many have cracked walls and crumbling steps and paint peeling on the sides. The streets and public buildings are all sadly in need of repair.

A small percentage of the people live in private family homes and the gov­ ernment gave loans to anyone who wanted to build their own homes, within a three-year time limit. One woman told me, that, for years people wore "blinders" to the outer appear­ ances of their homes and buildings, be­ cause the only place where they felt "safe" was inside their homes -so, they focused upon this.

Family life is alive and well in Kosice. People help each other and young people live with their parents until marriage, (and sometimes, after as flats are hard to find), unless stu­ dents go away to live in college dormi­ tories. Family gatherings for birthdays and holidays are major social events.

Family comes first!

There is a furniture and plastics plant in Kosice, as well as a Skoda car fac­ tory. Many people here have hopes their city will become the New Detroit of the future and that G.M. and other U.S. manufacturers will want to invest in plants here. They have the man­ power and welcome all enterprises, but lack the capital to do it, without for­ eign investment. At present, Skoda has no competition, except for the Soviet­ made Ladas. A car costs about 100,000 Krowns, which is about $30,000 in U.S. currency, so few people can af­ ford them. The people who do own cars generally use them only on week­ ends, as petrol is so high. Generally, everyone takes trams or buses to work or to shop. (The women carry shop­ ping bags, wherever they go.)

There is a University and Medical and Dental Center in Kosice. People come from smaller towns or villages for medical treatment or go to the Vet­ erans Hospital. I've noticed that many people over the age of 40 need dental work done. There is no lack of dentists - but, they have difficulty getting anes­ thetic, so people "shy away" from get­ ting teeth fixed.

There is also a museum in Kosice and the Dom Umenie and Dom Kultu­ ra! Hall for concerts and cultural events. The State Theatre, downtown, is being renovated. There is a magne­ sium mine within the city limits, and other minerals, including gold, are in the nearby Tatra Mountains.

People go to the mountains for the "fresh air" and for skiing on winter weekends. Skiing is a major sport here, and is a required physical educa­ tion requirement in the high schools and universities. Since last August, CNN television has been here (in En­ glish) and there are excellent British, German and French educational pro­ grams.

I watched the movie "Oracula - the Vampire" (in Slovak-) only it was called "Dr. Acula." I also saw "Ghandi'' - called "Ghandiji." It was strange to hear Ghandi speaking in "· ~ .

Slovak! Some American westerns have been translated into German - so cow­ boys might get off their horses, wave a gun in the air, and shout "Achtung!"

In contrast to their dreary surround­ ings, the people of Kosice are warm and spontaneous. They are nice to each other (even in gueue lines!) and nice to me, too. (On buses their are always "gentlemen" who hop out of their seats for ladies.) They are intelligent, good looking people who are clean and fas­ tidious in their personal habits. The women are attractive, very fashion conscious and take pride in their per­ sonal appearance. The children are po­ lite and have a "glow of health" about them - and, above all - they are clean!

The people generally have green or bluish green eyes with fair hair and complexions. They look just like the Americans in the Detroit area where I come from, except there are no blacks or orientals. (I guess I look like them, too - as people frequently stop me on the street or at bus stops to ask for di­ rections or for the time. They don't know, that I'm usually lost, myself!)

There are no teen "hang-outs" as we have in the States, (and no teenage re­ bellions, eitherl) No McDonald's, Burger Kings, Denny's, Colonel Sand­ ers or other fast food restaurants. Also no toasters, laundromats or clothes dryers! Most families have small washing machines in their bathrooms, but, no-one I talked with had ever even seen a dryer! Clothes are hung outside to dry (rain, snow or shine) on clothes­ lines strung on the balconies or outside the windows.

There are shortages here, of every kind of consumer goods, and of food, too! At present, there are no eggs in Kosice. Why? No-one knows, but the local joke is, that the chickens have gone on strike! One day I stood in a long gueue line behind a truck parked on a street corner to get two jars of ketchup. Although tomatoes are grown here in the summertime - there is no tomato sauce or ketschup in the potraviny's. (Grocery stores-) It seems there is no "middle man" to process food and market it, efficiently.

Also, Poles have been coming across the border to "stock up" and local citi­ zens have been hoarding, out of fear that prices will go up January 1st, 1991, when the Krown goes on the world market.

There are very few freezes and the people have just small refrigerators for food storage. Since there are no preser­ vatives in the food, the milk spoils fast and bread (which is baked daily-) gets stale fast. Women have to go to the store almost daily to meet family needs, carrying their own shopping bags. (The stores don't bag your gro­ ceries here and you have to pay for plastic bags.) The stores are open at odd hours and close at noon on Satur-

-

days. The shelves are never fully stocked with anything. You have to go from store to store, searching, if you want a specific item.

Common drugstore items that we take for granted - like nice soaps, bath powders and perfumes are in very short supply - as are hair products like Frost 'n Tip kits or hair coloring shampoos for women. There is a big shortage of paper products, too. No paper napkins in the schools (or any­ where else!) No kleenex- and in public restrooms there is no toilet paper. You bring you own!

Czechoslovakia has its freedom, now, and hopes for better things, but in, some ways, the country was better off, under Communism. Higher Educa­ tion and all medical care was free. Ev­ eryone retired, at half salary, from their working years, at age 55 for women and 60 for men. (Of course, they paid high taxes to make these things possible.) Young mothers got two years maternity leave (also at half salary) and there are excellent day­ care centers for working mothers. So, in some ways the government provided a sense of security - a feeling of being "taken care of." Now the government is in a state of transition and needs time to form new plans.

I've been pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the people, here. The teachers and my students invite me to their homes and take me for Sunday rides to see the sights. Viera and Milan Vyshna (both English teachers) have made me a part of their family life.

They have two children - Peter, age 8 and one more. One Sunday they took me to Chermel, an Alpine Chata (cha­ teau) where there is a mountain climb­ ing club here, where mountain climbers are trained. A few Kosice men have climbed Mt. Everest! (They belong to the T.J. Metropole Sports Club.)

I've been taken to concerts of the Kosice Philharmonic and Zaleziar Folk Dancers at Dom Umenie Hall, and the Sports School students come to visit me, after hours, to practice their En­ glish. One gal, named Olga, is a shot­ putter and all around athlete. She does a lot of shopping for me. Another one, named Sylvia, is a very feminine girl, who favors sat-in blouses and dangling earrings. She is really a "pistal packin' Mama" and is a sharp shooter, who carries big 50 pound rifles on buses and trains when she goes to competitions.

My Slovak is still a little limited. I found out why people laughed when I said "Your welcome" to their "Dukujem" (Thank you-) The correct word is "prosím." I was saying "prasa," which means "pig!" Also, for awhile, I was shaking hands with peo­ ple and saying "Dovedenia." I thought that this meant "How do you do?" In-

By the same token, many people have given me some laughs, too, with their English. When someone de­ scrihes a "man with a bird," I now know that they mean "beard." One day in the school dining room we were served noodles - topped with a black powder and what looked like pepper spots. When I asked what it was, one of the teachers replied, "Opium! It's good!" I was reluctant to try it, but found that it was crushed poppyseeds with sugar! The same teacher told me, that a Jedalen restaurant was a "Snake Bar ....lťs a place where you go to get snakes!" (She meant "snacks!")

There is nothing impersonal about Kosice. One day an old man followed me around in the local potraviny, jab­ bering away in Slovak and tugging at my sleeve. He was quite annoying, so, finally, I turned to him and said, "I'm American ..... .I only speak English!

He smiled a big, toothless smile and started to sing "Hello Dolly!" Then, he shouted "Roosevelt!" and kissed my hand. Later, in the afternoon, he saw me standing at a bus stop. He shouted "Hello Dolly!" and waved, as if I was an old friend.

In spite of all the shortages and in­ conveniences here, I like Kosice. Each day is a new challenge. The schools are well run and my students are very attentive and eager to learn. I told the the high school students, that when my own children were their age, they used to say good-bye to each other, by say­ ing "See you later, Alligator" followed by the reply, "After awhile, Croco­ dile." Now, when I enter my class­ room, all the students stand, and say, "Hay-lo ..Meesus Moranan." When the class is over, they stand and say, in unison, "See you later, Alligator" and "After awhile, Crocodile."

It was crammed full of brochures from Disney World, Sea World, Malineland, Cypress Gardens and Busch Gardens, as well as four picture menus from a Denny's res­ taurant. These were my teaching sup­ plies, as I had no ESL materials to work with. (I used it as my briefcase for class). I also brought (for fun-) a pair of Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears - which everyone, from the Head­ masters down to the cleaning women, have tried on. So, the local people and students call me the "Mickey Mouse Teacher." This suits me, just fine.

Kosice suits me, too. As far as I know, I'm the only American here ... but I've been treated like I'm an old friend. So, I think Kosice is a "Dobre" place.

Come visit some time ...you won't find nicer people, anywhere.

My Old Man Was A Sucker (He thought he had to make it on his own) Condensed from Chicago Tribune MikeRoyko Seeing a recent Washington riot on television, I assumed the rioters had suddenly been overwhelmed by a crav­ ing for fried chicken. They had smashed their way into a chicken joint and were looting it of every last wing and drumstick.

Later I discovered it wasn't chicken they were after. They wanted more bi­ lingual education in their schools; more Spanish-speaking police; better jobs and more spacious housing; a more sincere effort by the rest of us to understand their culture; and a greater voice in government --- even for those who are here illegally.

And what better way to do that than to smash into a chicken joint and make off with all the chicken?

It just shows how dumb my father was, may he rest in peace.

Like many Americans, my father was an immigrant. He came here from Eastern Europe on an old boat when he was about ten. He couldn't speak a word of English. And the insensitive school systems provided no bilingual education.

Of course, it wouldn't have mattered if they had, since he didn't go to school. Times were tough, so he got a job on a coal barge. Child-labor laws weren't very strict in those days.

Then he picked up other common labor --- whatever he could get. By the time he joined the Army, he could speak and understand English. Later he taught himself to read the newspaper and a racing form. He even got good enough at math to keep the books when he opened his own saloon.

Still, he never lost his accent, so for a long time he was called greenhorn by those who didn't respect his ethnic and cultural background. But since he had a very good left hook, nobody called him that more than once.

I'm not sure if he was frustrated by the government's failure to provide him with better housing. When I was a kid, we lived in dumps. Of course, we didn't know they were dumps. They had running water and indoor toilets.

The kerosene stove kept the place warm. The ceilings didn't leak, and

diligent use of rat traps kept the rodent problem under control. Young Abe Lincoln never had it so good.

Nor was my father frustrated because the government didn't give him a bet­ ter job, business loans, student loans or any other form of assistance. All the government provided was a neighbor­ hood police station, firehouse, public school and garbage collection. Any­ thing else, you were on your own.

His ethnic group, like many others, built churches and formed fraternal or­ ganizations, credit unions and other in­ stitutions to help one another out. But you had to be really down on your luck to take a handout. You didn't qualify just by being a loser.

I was always proud of the old man, the way he made it on his own in spite of his handicaps. But now I realize he was a sucker: What he should have done was bust into a chicken joint as a social statement of his discontent.

Then maybe he could have cut a better deal for the rest of us.

On the other hand, he never liked · chicken fried. He said it was better in soup with noodles --- it stretched a meal better.

"We can't tolerate this situation no more. We have to let people know we are humans and we have rights too," said one expert from what is called the Hispanic community.

jsme všeho dost a tak jsme slavili Den díkůvzdání.

Jednání schůze začalo v 1 hodinu 45 minut. Po slibu věrnosti vlajce uctili Řád číslo 47, Seaton jsme památku zesnulých členů jednou minutou ticha.

Milé sestry a bratři, Tajemnice Jarolyn Poppová přečetla Předseda Tim Reese zahájil prosin­ covou schůzi ve 2 hodiny odpoledne 1. zprávy z minulé schůze a podala prosince. finanční zprávy a vše bylo přijato beze Povstáním jsme vzdali čest našim změny. Také přečetla poděkování od rodiny sestry Frances Kutilové za pro­ vlajkam; nosiči vlajek byli Jennifer jevení soustrasti.

Reese a Mark Greger. Žádost o pojištění byla schválená Všichni úředníci byli přítomni a nemocní členi byli Johnie Vaniček, výborem, který se skládal z těchto členek: Alma Triličková, Gertrude Mac Greger a Rachel Bača.

Již v kapitole z hostorie ČSÚZ byl učiněn náznak skutečnostsi, že Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk se zasloužil i o vznik I. Čs. ústavu zahraničního. Přímé důkazy o tom neexistují, nepřímých je však několik.

Masaryk jako prezi­ dent republiky osobně zabýval myšlenkou vytvořit organizaci, která by rozvíjela kontakty navázané s kra­ jany v době nedávno minulé a navíc pomáhala těm, kteří i nadále z různých důvodů vlast opouští. Portrét zkušenostem a osobnímu kouzlu se mu podařilo na svou stranu získat více než T.G. Masaryka je první věc, která upoutá navštěvníky Čs. ústavu milión Čechů a Slováků v USA. Dobře zahraničního v prostorách poznal hlavní krajanské spolky a jejich Vrtbovského paláce v Karmelitské ulici představitele.

Připravil JOSEF KOLÍNSKÝ také staly členy Československé národní rady, založené v Chicagu.

V čase podzimu v první listopadovou sobotu běhám spolu se stovkami mužů i žen Velkou kunratickou. Je to lesní běh do strmého kopce a cestami padajícího listí. Kdo nevstřebal do svého organismu tenhle neopakovatelný běh opravdových bláznů, může jenom litovat. Už dva roky běžíme závod do kopce v naší domovině zcela spjati tisícerými nitkami s krajany, rozsetými po celé, překrásné Zemi. Běžíme a nikdo z nás zatím neví, jestli doběhne do cíle, nevíme to ani všichni dohromady.

Vedeme vášnivé debaty, nicotné žabomyší spory, hádáme se o pomlčku a z přátel vyrábíme nepřátele. Vůně chleba patří k nejlepším autorčiným knihám.''

Román o texaských krajanech se rozšířil po Americe a studenti češtiny z USA pátrali v Praze po autorce. Celé skupiny ji po léta navštěvovaly v rodinném domku na okraji Prahy.

Spolu s profesory (mezi nimi byl i pro­ fesor Skřivánek z Texasu) rokovali v útulném prostředí o Praze, studiu· češtiny i moravských přistěhovalcích v USA. Františka Pecháčková vždy napekla pravé moravské koláče, hrálo se, zpívalo a učilo se moravské písničky. Šlágrem pro studenty byly světle červené bobule, které si sami natrhali se stromu na její zahrádce.

Třešně. Viděli je poprvé a chutnaly jim asi jako nám poprvé ananas, mango či kiwi.

Až do posledních let života spisovatelka Pecháčková hovořila o krajanském Texasu, o moudrém biskupovi Mořkovském, dostávala dopisy od známých. Našla zalíbení v krajanských duších. "Dovedou se rvát se životem, jsou pracovití, ale umějí vychutnávat i slasti života a přijímat jeho strasti," říkala.

Na břevnovském hřbitově v Praze byla na jejím hrobě i kytice Obce českých spisovatelů s červenomodrobílou trikolorou.

Ite1Ds of Interest The nation's 26 million veterans and roughly one million others who will leave the ranks in the next two years, just got a break on buying a business. Recently, the International Franchise Association and the U.S. Small Business Administration lauched VetFran, or Veterans Transi­ tion Franchise Initiative. Participating franchise firms will reduce the fees they charge for buying into their com­ panies by 5 to 50 percent, or finance up to half the fee at competitive rates.

Some firms will even do both.

Franchise fees can range from $5,000 for a small service firm to $40,000 for a well-known fast-food chain. Parcel Plus, for example, a mail-service's firm, will knock 25 percent off its $15,500 franchise fee and finance half the remaining $11,625 at 10 percent, cutting the upfront cost for veterans to $5,812. But applicants still need a net worth of $200,000 and liquid assets of $75,000 to qualify. Some one hundred franchisers have signed on so far, from Rug Doctor to Moto-Photo. *** Reluctant gun owners in St. Louis and San Francisco have turned in 8,000 unwanted firearms to local police this fall, ever since the two police departments began offering to pay $50 per weapon. Most major U.S. cities don't have funds for similar buybacks, but police departments generally are eager to dispose of un­ wanted guns for free.

As many as two million such guns in the United States may be gathering dust in closets and night stands, but turning them over to the police can be tricky. Municipal laws governing the transport of firearms vary. Simply stowing a firearm in the glove com­ partment on the way to the police sta­ tion risks arrest if you are stopped for a traffic violation. The Police Founda­ tion, an independent research group, recommends asking local police for a letter spelling out their gun transport laws. With a letter in hand, you will be better prepared should you be pulled over. Police in Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles and some other cities will pick up your old gun at no cost.

Some guns may be too valuable to give away. Local gun shops can give appraisals, and prices are listed in "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms," sold in most bookstores. One Philadelphia gun owner probably should have sought advice. Last summer, he turned in an 1873 Winchester rifle to the Philadel­ phia police for $20. It was later valued at $2,500.
