winter which they had experienced since coming to this new world. These Pilgrims had been persecuted for their · firm religious beliefs and had to aban­ don their homes in Europe to under­ take a perilous sea voyage into the new world upon the ship Mayflower, so that they could establish new homes with freedom of their religious beliefs.

The overwhelming majority of them were perhaps farmers who in this new land, remained faithful to their professions.

For us, Thanksgiving Day is more than a day of remembrance and celebration, it is a day of counting our blessings and giving thanks for them from year to year.

Let us then give thanks for our in­ dustrial growth which was afforded us wonderful and comfortable living in this land with freedom to do as we wish. In essence, Thanksgiving Day is a holiday, a day of appreciation, and for this reason we also remembered our newspapers and their contribution to our living, who still enjoy the Freedom of the Press.

We only wish that thankful recogni­ tion be given our Press for in the giving our inner feelings expression, we gain peace. Our newspapers indeed have an influence on our conduct toward other people in our immediate family circle, our community and our lodges. Our appreciation covers a variety of things, especially to that which serves us for our greater con­ tentment and security.

In this regard, our appreciation should prompt us to fervent activity in our lodges for further growth and development in our own SPJST. Let us be grateful that our Society sponsors protection and that it offers us an op­ portunity to use and to express our latent talents in our lodges for the benefit of the whole and thereby we live a useful life in our community.

Let us also give thanks to those who fought in the wars for us and to those who died so that we could live in freedom and peace.

*** Everyone is looking for something good in our lives. We all want the best we can possibly obtain for ourselves and our loved ones.

With the abiding values of life we can have the very best But what do we . . · mean by abiding values? To answer that question, we must first define the two words "abiding" and "values."

Abiding means something fixed or · · non-changing. Value means somethmg useful or something desirable. Thus when we combine the two words, we find that abiding values are something · · ' that are desirable and will remam unchanged through time. This, then, tells us what will make our lives worthwhile -- the things that are desirable are also the things that will live through the ravages of time.

Thi~ brings us to the most imp~rt~nt question of all. What are the abiding values of life? It would seem that there are two maj or ones falling in the fol • lowing sequence of importance.

First are the social values which are 1 · hi · h c 11 our re atíons ips wit our re ow human. If we cannot live with them in peace, life is not really worthwhile.

Second is the cultural values which ' ' for e d ucatíon ' an d are our apprecíation fine arts ' Without education' life is very sad and meaningless.

Both of these values are important if ' be 1 d h 1 If a lif 1 e ts to e comp ete an w o e. one is lacking, there is a void in that life which cannot be replaced. We all want the best, so let us devote our lives to securing the Abiding Values of Life.

Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 - December 25, 1991 The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting October 1, 1991 through December 25, 1991. · The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

A donation of $1.00 per member is suggested for this drive. Any donation amount would certainly be appreciated to help defray the cost of higher educa­ tion.

Austin High School in 1971 and from Texas A&M University in 1980. His wife, Sally, is the daughter of Robert C. Holmes of Bryan.

President Gladys Allison presided over the November 10, 1991 meeting of Lodge No. 15.

The meeting was called to order with Pledge of Allegiance being recited, and a moment of silence remembering our deceased members.

The minutes were read and approved.

The treasurer's report was given and also approved. Reports were given from the bar, kitchen and entertain­ ment; all were approved.

On our sick list is Jack (Grandpa) Ruzicka who has had surgery at King's Daughters Hospital. Leslie Sakewitz is improving from his accident last year.

He is now taking special therapy in Austin; they are looking forward to possibly him being able to walk by Christmas.

The lodge members have OK'd dan­ ces for the month of December. There will be three dances -- December 14th, 21st and 31st.

New doors will be added to our front entrance to replace the ones that were vandalized in a break-in last month.

The pennies for scholarship fund money will be matched by our lodge to make our contribution a little bigger.

An appreciation supper will be held November 13 at 7:00 p.m. for all those who have worked with the lodge this year.

On December 1st at 4:00 p.m., we will be having our Christmas party.

Bring a gift costing about $5.00. If you bring a friend, bring a gift for them.

Everyone is to bring sandwiches, chips, dips or desserts.

On November 24, we will visit the nursing home and present each resi­ dent a bag of fruit.

Several families in the community got together to get more acquainted with each other and discuss local is­ sues.

Brian Vanicek reported on his recent visit with the association of Texas Electric Corp. in Austin about the cost of electricity to operate the facility for our members.

The proposed 1992 Rules and Regulations were read, discussed, changed and approved by a majority of votes.

The chairman of each committee gave their reports, there was no board report.

Carol Chervenka volunteered to take reservations for the New Year's Eve dance, Carol's phone number is (817) 642-3608. Jed Durbin and Spur of The Moment will be playing for the dance, cost of tickets will be $10.00 per per­ son.

Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft gave the youth report and said the youth will have a Christmas program at the Christmas dinner. The youth have asked that each family member bring a canned good to the Christmas dinner for donation to needy families in the area. The day will begin with happy hour at 3:00 p.m., program at 4:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m.

This being the November meeting, elections were held for the officers, chairman, board of trustees and delegates. President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and conducted the meeting in proper order.

The president called for committee reports. Rest Homes Director Emil Havlak reported on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville.

District IV Director Stanley Broz gave an interesting and informative report on SPJST matters.

Our Lodge No. 49 Christmas party will be held on our regular game night on December 20 in the lodge hall.

Games will start at 6:00 p.m. and din­ ner will be served at 8:00 p.m. Our lodge will serve ham, sausage, sauerkraut and creamed potatoes.

Members and friends are asked to bring side dishes to go with the meal.

Instead of a gift exchange among our­ selves, members voted to bring two cans of food to be distributed to the needy at Christmas.

Members also voted to give the two S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes and also the two rest homes in Ballinger tube sox for Christmas to keep the guests' feet warm.

Contributions were made to the Birthday Fund by Elizabeth Walther, Emma Havlak, Emil Havlak and Eddie Mae Huebner. Lula Marecek and Pauline Shiller won the door prizes.

Both contributed the prize to the Birthday Fund. This fund is used to purchase the meat dish for special oc­ casion dinners.

Theresa Pospichal's name was drawn for the Progressive attendance prize; since she was absent, the money went back into the "pot." The February jack­ pot will be $50.00 for the lucky person in attendance. All members are eligible to win provided they attend the meeting.

The president adjourned the meeting.

Elizabeth Urbanek served delicious sausage and sauerkraut sandwiches plus cherry cream pie for the fraternal hour following the meeting.

We also extend our congratulations to Brother Talon and Sister Lesli Milan who were wed Saturday, November 2 at All Saints Catholic Church. It was followed by a dinner and dance reception at our hall, that was also a beautiful setting. They had guests from Czechoslovakia, Canada, California; South Bend, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; Berwyn, Illinois; Seattle, Washington and all over Texas.

They just returned from a six-day honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico, where they had a wonderful time.

To both couples, may they have many years of happiness.

Brother Frankie Milan just returned from a week in Anaheim, California, where he attended the Soft Ball Con­ vention.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Florence Merlick. May she rest in peace.

While Brother Jerry and Sister Hen­ rietta Milan were on their Bahama Cruise, they met up with Rick and Sister Monica (Smajstrla) Greene of Sugarland, Texas. They had a big Czech wedding in West. The four en­ joyed the cruise together.

Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Ed Simmank on the loss of their husband, father and brother. He was a member of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone for over 66 years. He attended many of our meetings with his wife, Frances and helped at our functions. He will be missed by all of us.

All of us enjoyed a delicious lunch after our meeting.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Election Results Dear Members: With a change to much colder tem­ peratures, 76 members turned out for the November 3 monthly meeting.

President Tim Reese convened the meeting at 1 :00 p.m. with the presenta­ tion of flags by Jennifer Reese and Mark Greger.

Welcomed as visitors were former District II President D.I. Bohac, Ann Balusek and Freddie Schroeder.

Wishes for a quick and total recovery go out to Mary Shenkir, Mark Greger, Robert Byer, Stacy Skrabanek and Raymond Mikeska.

Secretary Delores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, board of trust­ ees and sales representatives as well as the minutes, which stand approved as read.

Reported and accepted as new mem­ bers were Monica R. Guenat and Jef­ frey J. Daniels.

Correspondence included informa­ tion from District VI, hosts of the 1992 SPJST Convention, concerning the purchase of ad(s) in the 26th conven­ tion brochure.

Secretary of the Board Judy Pechal read the board minutes, which were fa­ vorably received.

Brother Henry Janacek for being selected Lodge 47's Fraternalist of the Year. He went on to read numerous, wonderful comments written about Brother Henry by the membership.

FAC Ruth Hanusch reported these upcoming events -- November 15, Progressive "42" Tournament/Social Night at 7:00 p.m. and November 16, State Volleyball Tournament at Tempie City Recreation Building at 9:00 a.m.

Chairpersons' reports were listened to with interest.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported 35 youth, 2 visitors and 3 adults present. She spoke briefly on the youth's participation in the annual Christmas party.

Emily Stuteville was recognized. She presented Sister Patsy and the youth club with items she acquired as DYC from 1965-1968. The donated items included an autographed paper from youth club members and a group pic­ ture taken at Six Flags.

Elections followed.

From Youth Leaders Lodge6,Cottonwood Youth Club Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting was held November 10, 1991 at 2:30 p.m. with a good attendance.

Guests were Jessica Rosales, Cecelia Rosales and Traci Dobecka.

The Halloween party was also well · attended and everyone had a good time and played games.

We all worked on items for the rest home residents' Christmas gifts.

The youth club donated cakes to West Rest Haven on November 6.

Lydia Dobecka's mother, Mrs. Krizan,

had a birthday; she was 97 years of age.

The youth members scheduled their practices on November 15 and Novem­ ber 22.

On November 29, District III will have a lock-in at Lodge No. 84 in Dal­ las and Saturday, they will go to Holiday-in-the-Park at Six Flags.

Our Christmas party will be Decem­ ber 1; the meeting will start at 1 :00 p.m.; youth meeting at 2:30 p.m.xso-. cial and supper at 5:00 p.m. After sup­ per our Christmas program by the youth will take place, Santa Claus will pay us a visit and we will also have an exchange of gifts, so members come and bring a friend to the Christmas party.

Youth Letters New Braunfels Youth Club Held Two-Month Socials The Hill Country Lodge No. 185 Youth Club had two social meetings during September and October on Sep­ tember 25, 1991.

The youth club members went to Comal County Fair Carnival. Everyone had a good time riding the rides. On October 24, the members hosted a Hal­ loween party for the adult lodge mem­ bers and parents. Everyone had a good time playing the games. We had a cos­ tume contest and refreshments. The youth club members enjoyed breaking a pinata filled with candy.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Meeting Dear Readers, Our October youth club meeting was held on Saturday, October 26, at the home of our members - Karen, Kristen and Krystle Bender in Stafford. We discussed our next meeting, the district meeting and other upcoming events.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers of Holland SPJST Lodge No. 80 on behalf of our entire lodge membership, wish to express our heartfelt condolences to our departed brother JOE E. BARABAS, JR., who passed away at the age of 92 on October 31, 1991 in Will O' Bell Nursing Home.

A rosary was recited at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 3 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett.

Services for Brother Barabas were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 4 at S.S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, with Monsignor Edward Rabroker officiating. Entomb­ ment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum in Granger.

Brother Barabas was born in In­ dustry, Texas to Joseph Edward and Augusta (Kunz) Barabas. He married Mary Novtak on November 8, 1921.

He was a lifelong farmer and worked with the Bell County Soil Conserva­ tion Service for many years.

He was a member of S.S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Granger and was the president of SPJST Lodge No. 80 in Holland for 12 years. He also was honorary president of the SPJST Lodge for 10 years and was an officer for RVOS Insurance in Hol­ land.

He was preceded in death by his wife, four sisters, six brothers and a daughter.

Survivors are his daughter, Celestine Fronek of Holland; a brother, Edmund Barabas of Bartlett; grandchildren, Joe E. Fronek of Los Angeles, California, Connie Gooden of Houston, Ann Sladovník of Holland; and great­ granddaughter, Stephanie Sladovník of Holland.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

Beta Club Inductee Christopher G. Coker has been chosen to become a member of the Na­ tional Junior Beta Club. The National Junior Beta Club is a non-profit, leadership-service club whose purpose is to encourage effort and reward merit among students and to promote those qualities of character that make for good citizenship in the school com­ munity. Prospective members are selected by the faculty and administra­ tion of Forest Meadow Junior High School because of their worthy charac­ ter, creditable achievement, and com­ mendable attitude, provided they first meet the standards of scholastic and citizenship achievement as set forth by the Richardson Independent School District constitution of the National Junior Beta Club. Forest Meadow Junior High School has current enroll­ ment in excess of 1000 students, of these only 130 have received the honor of invited membership to the National Junior Beta Club. Chris is 13 years old and in the 8th grade. He is also a mem­ ber of the Forest Meadow football team.

Chris is very active in the Boy Scouts of America, working his way up through Cub Scouts to his current rank of "Life." Chris is currently work­ ing to achieve his "Eagle" rank. He was chosen by fellow Scouters this summer to become a member of the "Order of the Arrow," an elite group of Scouters; and has completed his "Or­ deal," which is a strenuous training-in­ itiation weekend.

Chris is an active member of Dallas SOKOL Zizka participating in their gymnastics program and of Dallas SPJST Lodge No. 84 Youth-Teen Club. He participated in the current SPJST State winning circle of Beseda and State junior group talent winners and won first place at State on his entry in Hobby Kits. He is also a past SPJST State Duke.

Gulf Coast Czech Festival News

The festival workers were no excep­ tion, they all had a great time.

The Festival Planning Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make the festival a success. It is impossible to mention and thank each one individually, however, the following deserve special recognition: Larry Vecera and the Cesi z Texasu for giving us a sampling of their per­ formances in Czechoslovakia earlier this year; the Vrazels, the Central Texas Sounds, Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen, James Stryk and the Moonriders, who provided music for the two battle dances; the members of Council No. 4550, Knights of Colum­ bus, for preparing and serving Sunday's noon meal; the Galveston County Czech Heritage Accordian Band and the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Tim Kostom, for providing Sunday's noon time entertainment. The Moon­ riders also played for the Polka/Czech Mass and provided some of the noon time music on Sunday. Tim Kostom and seventeen members of the SPJST Lodge No. 88 Choral Group, accom­ panied by Naomi Spencer on the piano, served as the choir for Sunday's Protestant non-denominational wor­ ship service.

Very special thanks go to Rev. Joseph Hybner, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Victoria, for celebrating the Polka/Czech Mass; and to Rev. Henry Beseda, retired Unity of the Brethren minister and Bill Malina, Presbyterian Elder, for conducting the Protestant non-denominational wor­ ship service.

One of the highlights of Sunday's program was a tribute to the United States flag. Four members of the Texas Chapter of the POLK of A served as an honor guard and presented the United States and the Czech flags in the center of the ballroom, the chan­ delier was turned on and the house lights were turned off. In this subdued atmosphere, Bill Malina led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag, after which he gave a short talk on the flag. Helen Hegwood, accompanied by Naomi Spencer on the piano, then gave very beautiful and inspiring renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and the Czech and Slovak national anthems.

This brief ceremony brought tears to the eyes of many.

Finally, but not in the slightest de­ gree least, thanks to SPJST Lodge No. 172 for their hospitality and the use of their facility.

Next year's festival has tentatively been set for Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, 1992. Al Stryk and members of the POLK of A are busy getting the bands lined up for the battle dances. Rev. Hybner, Rev. Be­ seda and Bill Malina are planning a Sunday celebration of the Polka/Czech Mass which will include Protestant participation and the singing of Protes­ tant hymns in both Czech and English.

This year's planning committee was composed of Alfred Stryk, Larry Maresh and Alvin Hollas, representing the Texas Chapter of the Polka Lovers By: W.J."Bill" Malina Klub of America; Jerry and Vicki The Fifth Annual Gulf Coast Czech Dressler, representing SPJST Lodge Festival, which was held on November No. 172; Lillia Mae Peter and Justine 2 and 3 at SPJST Lodge No. 172 in Svoboda, representing the San Jacinto Pasadena, is now history. District Judge Dan Beck and Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka were intro­ duced and then addressed the visitors attending, followed by Colonel John Edward Stavast, U.S. Air Force, retired, who was the guest speaker for the day.

Folding of the flag was by Major Harry Meyer, who was assisted by the members of the various organizations in attendance. A 21-gun salute was fol­ lowed by a "missing man" formation of six aircraft that flew overhead. A World War I vintage aircraft then flew slowly over the cemetery and released thousands of flower petals that settled

over the graves of the cemetery plots.

Other special guests who attended the memorial service were Father Wil­ liam Halata of Hostyn, Brother Chris­ topher Doyle of Victoria, Colonel Claude Marty of Schulenburg, Edmund A. Novak, CW04, United States Coast Guard, retired, a Praha native and now living in Austin. After Benediction, the Army band played "God Bless America," and it was sung by those present for this memorable occasion. A Praha-style fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings was prepared and served by the Schulenburg St. Rose Parent-Teacher Club in the Parish Hall following the ceremony.

Veterans Day Observance Held At Praha A golden anniversary Veterans' Day memorial service was held at St. Mary's Church and its cemetery on Sunday, November 10, at Praha, Texas.

The occasion centered on the 50th anniversary of the sneak aerial bomb­ ing attack by the Japanese on our for­ ces at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. That "Day of Infamy" left 2,330 American servicemen dead, 1,145 wounded and about 100 civilian casualties. All of the eight Pacific Fleet battleships at Pearl Harbor were hit, (five of them sank in the harbor and another was heavily damaged), 140 aircraft were destroyed with 80 more damaged. Two destroyers were sunk along with nine other ships that were sunk or badly damaged. Three of the Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers were out at sea and escaped damage. World War II had just begun.

Father Marcus Valenta (later Lt. Colonel), was a United States Army chaplain on that fateful day, saying Sunday Mass at the military base when the Japanese attacked. He then went about the task of ministering the last rites to the injured and dying. It was Father Valenta who initiated the Praha memorial service 29 years ago to honor all military veterans. (Nine young men from Praha gave their lives for freedom in World War II).

After the Mass, a large crowd of people and their families and friends from numerous cities and towns around the state assembled at the

Praha cemetery for the program. Music was provided by the 49th Armored Division Band of the Texas National Guard. A Confederate Air Force group of six World War II vintage aircraft participated in a fly-over and then an impressive mock-battle airshow.

In the sequence of events that fol­ lowed, retired Colonel Lowell Kubala of Weimar led the veterans organiza­ tions and honor guests to their seats.

The National Anthem was played by the Army band and the Pledge of Al­ legiance was led by thirty of the stu­ dents of St. Rose Elementary School in Schulenburg. Ernest Chaloupka intro­ duced Otto Steinhauser of the Flatonia American Legion Post #94. Laying of the wreaths were by the ladies of the auxiliaries. The uniformed members of the Fourth Degree Knights of Colum­ bus were then escorted by the Schulen­ burg American Legion Post #143 honor guard.

Special tribute was paid to Father Marcus Valenta, Monsignor Robert Schmidt and the deceased veterans of Praha by Milton Gabler. The nine men from Praha area who died in World War II were: PFC Rudolph L. Barta, PFC Robert L. Bohuslav, PFC Anton Kresta, Jr., Pvt. Joseph Lev, PFC Ed­ ward J. Marek, S/SGT. George D. Pav­ licek, PFC Adolph E. Rab, Pvt. Eddie Sbrusch and PFC Jerry B. Vaculík.

Included among the District Com­ manders and Presidents of the various veterans organizations were: Willie O. Brown, Grady We.Coker, Tony Moore, .

This short, readable volume is being sold not only as a CEFT fund-raiser, but also to provide members of the Czech community of Texas with a con­ cise history of their ancestral lands.

The History, which contains many interesting illustrations, is a survey of the Czech and Slovak lands from the time of the Great Moravian Empire of the ninth century through the end of World War II. First published in 1947, the history has been reprinted this year.

In a book review which identifies Professor Polisensky as a distin­ guished international scholar, Dr. Clin­ ton Machann of Texas A&M University says, "Concise and readable histories of the Czech and Slovak lands in the English language are hard to find, and I would highly recommend this little classic to modern readers."

I first became acquainted with Josef Polisensky's little History of Czecho­ slovakia when a Czech friend sent a copy to me as a gift. The book soon took a prominent place on the refer­ ence shelf in my office: It is a fine his­ torical survey of the Czech and Slovak lands from the Great Moravian Empire of the ninth century to the liberation of Czechoslovakia from the Nazis at the end of the Second World War. Polisensky's short History, of course, cannot cover the enormously complex political and religious history of the Czech and Slovak lands in much depth, but the non-specialist will be able to locate most of the information he requires. Furthermore, Professor Polisensky (still alive today) is a dis­ tinguished scholar with an interna­ tional reputation, and the reader will find his book to be reliable and accu­ rate as well as easy to read. It may be that some readers of this newsletter have met Professor Polisensky during their visits to Prague: In the past, he has occasionally lectured at the special summer school for American students at Charles University, and his special interest in Czech immigrant communí-

ties abroad has led him to conduct re­ search concerning both North and South American regions.

The reprinting of this short History in the post-Revolutionary period is one acknowlegement of the continuing re­ spect for the author and his work in his homeland. Concise and readable histo­ ries of the Czech and Slovak lands in the English language are hard to find, and I would highly recommend this lit­ tle classic to modern readers.

Finally, I should mention that the book contains many interesting illustrations, including a photo of Win­ ston Churchill standing alongside Edvard Benes and one of the enormous Sokol Festival of 1938.

Born June 28., 1916, in Vojtěchov in the Olomouc archdiocese, František VaXák was ordained a priest in 1941.

A canon law expert, he was pastor of a parish and an official of the archdiocesan tribunal when he was named a bishop.

The archbishop made a brief stop here on September 11 and was the guest of honor at a reception held at the residence of the late Bishop John L. Mořkovsky. The prelate visited Czech communities in Hostyn and Shiner on September 11 and 12, 1990.

Archbishop František Vanák of Olomouc and metropolitan of Moravia was the guest of honor at a reception held September 1 O at the home of the late Bishop John L. Mořkovský on the grounds of St. Mary's Seminary, Houston. The Czech community of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston spon­ sored the reception and were joined by other Slavic groups.

Beside Houston, the Moravian archbishop Vanifk of Olomouc, which is the seat of the largest archdiocese in the Central Europe, visited Hostýn and Shiner, and toured with the help of KJT state president Laddie Matula, Fayetteville, Dubina and Praha.

Archbishop Vaňšk's pastoral visit took place in the USA and Canada from August 31st to September 26th 1990. The purpose of his visit was ik~'v:•i1,,·4,1):\

twofold; first, lie informed us, Czech­ Americans, of the spiritual suffering of the people in Czechoslovakia and of the large material damage to churches and other religious buildings caused by the anti-religious communist regime during its 43-year rule. Second, Moravian metropolitan Vaňák in­ formed us, Czech-Americans, about the progress of the spiritual revival among the people in the Old country and about the necessary repair work of many historical churches and other church properties. Now when arch­ bishop Varták is gone, we must hope that next Metropolitan of Moravia would follow in his footsteps to restore as many shrines and historical churches as possible to their former beauty.

The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met Thursday, November 7 at the SPJST Lodge No. 79-Sokol Hall. Four­ teen of our charter members were in attendance.

Pauline Novosad called to let us know she and husband, Vic, would be out-of-town visiting sick relatives in Temple and Waco so she would be un­ able to attend our November meeting.

Helen Sacky was feeling under the weather after undergoing eye surgery Monday, November 4, and decided she had better stay home a few more days.

We missed both of you and look for­ ward to seeing you at our December meeting.

We had two guests, Frances Kosarek and Ella Simcik. Betty Jurica, our membership secretary, signed them both up as new members. Welcome to our Krouzek, Frances and Ella.

Lil Hruska was appointed to our Tel­ phone Committee and Carrie Veselka to the Sunshine Committee. Thanks to both of you for accepting these impor­ tant appointments.

Although not a committee appoint­ ment, Norma Baker accepted the job of registering all members in atten­ dance and collecting for our drawings.

Since Norma is the president of Sokol and also manager of the hall, we couldn't hold our monthly meetings and luncheons without her. Norma also typed and ran off copies of our roster neatly enclosed in plastic sheets. She donated her time and the expense of this beautiful job, for which we owe her a big "Thank you."

JOSEF ZELENY Moravský malíl' Josef Zelený nepatřt k pl'íliš známým osobnostem a pl'esto jeho postavení v našem výtvarném umění 19. stsoletí je významné.

Jeho jméno je pl'ipomínáno pl'edevším v souvislosti s Alfonsem Muchou. Josef Zelený byl totiž Muchovým učitelem na klasickém gymnáziu v Brně a do značné míry ovlivnil pl'edevším umělecké začátky svého nadaného žáka. Inspiroval ho svým zájmem o historická témata, slovanskou mytologiiizálibouv monumentálních malbách.

Josef Zelený se narodil v Rajhradě u Brna v roce 1824. Základům malířství se učil u brněnského Josefa Trilby a pak přešel do soukromé malířské školy

práce v podobě dřevořezby, vyřezávané obrazy, figurky, malba, batika. O rok později se zúčastňuje M. Svozil v I tálii vyhlášené soutěže Ex Líbrís Dal Mondo Er Pinocchio. V shodné době ve Velkých Karlovicích vystavují členové Urgatiny.

Zájem projevují města Ostrava, Vsetín, Bojanovice, Rožnov p. Radhoštěm, Val. Meziříčí. Vedení valašského muzea v přírodě v Rožnově pod Radhoštěm se rozhoduje pro angažování některých členů Urgatiny pro práce v muzeu.

Po velmi zdařilých vystoupeních v Bojanovicích i v Rožnově v letošním roce se připravuje skupina na souhrnou výstavu do muzea ve Velkých Karlovicích. Je to už 25. výstava v její činnosti, která se uskuteční ve cinech 3.28. srpna. Bude obsahovat malby, grafiku, dřevořezbu a užité umění.

V uplynulém období bylo dohodnuto zřízení dvou stálých prodejních výstav, které bude mít Urgatina ve Velkých Karlovicích.

Muzeum veSttelicích OLOMOUC{LS) -- Zájem o národopis a regionální tradice má na Hané dlouhé tradice. V mnoha obcích působí vedle kronikářů také vlastivědné spolky, z nichž některé mají i svě místní muzeum.

Největším je muzeum ve Střelicích.

Místo občanům se zde podařtlo shromáždit cenný soubor předmětů, který dokládá vývoj obce za více než sto let.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women (Continued From Page 12) door prize, which was won by Velma Malchar. Lillie also prepared the chicken and dressing served at our luncheon. Everyone agreed Lillie is a good cook; and so are all the ladies who brought delicious food to this month's meeting. Millie Elzner was our main hostess.

The Czech beads donated by the Elzners were won by Carrie Veselka, Lil Hruska and Anna Marie Moss.

Next month's prizes will feature a Christmas theme to get us in the Christmas mood.

Our luncheon guest, Jerry Elzner, played taped Czech music for our lis­ tening pleasure. We appreciate his thoughtfulness in bringing his tapes and playing them for us to enjoy.

Our next meeting will start promptly at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 5th.

Members are asked to bring coats, jackets, sweaters and blankets to be donated to the poor. Norma Baker is in charge of this project. Hope all of our members stay well and are able to at­ tend our last meeting of the year.
