The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting Oc­ tober I, 1991 through December 25, 1991.

Requirements: Picture of deer with a verification from one of the following: Game Warden, Highway Patrol, Sheriff or any Public Official

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

Explanation of an "A" Team is that spiking is allowed unless it is purposely directed at a female. The "B" Team does not allow any power spiking, but a mild tap downward would not be called a spike. This decision will be left up to the referee. If either team reaches a score of 11-0, that team is classed as a win­ ner. Each team should have a roster of the players for each of their teams to give to the State FAC. Fayetteville SPJST facilities were the center of activity on Saturday, October 20, as a result of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's annual Lick­ skillet celebration.

There was a scrumptious aroma of barbecue on the grills and beans cooking while contest­ ants prepared these for cookoff con­ tests. The Fayetteville Show Fund sold delicious hamburgers throughout the day and there was a volleyball tourna­ ment as well as horseshoe pitching for those seeking.sports .activities., .

If this all sounds like fun, you should have come to the Fayetteville Class Reunion which was held in the SPJST Hall Saturday afternoon. The Class of 1941 hosted the reunion. As it is set up, the 50-year graduated class always is the host for this gathering each year and, in this case, some of the graduates had not seen each other in 50 years and really had a wonderful time reminiscing and touring the school museum.

Sunday, October 21, was also buzz­ ing with activity on the Fayetteville square while the smell . of freshly brewed coffee enticed people into the Precinct Courthouse for a cup as well as satisfying the "sweet tooth" with kolache, cakes, strudel, cookies, etc.

All this and a parade, too! You bet with floats in various categories, anti­ que cars and trail riders. Upon the completion of the parade, the Jim Rohde Band and the Fayette Czech Singers entertained the crowd with songs which were sung in English, Czech and German. The music and songs were performed in the gazebo on the square. Talk about memories, this

After feasting on a barbecue lunch, hamburger or hot dog, the option to purchase some type of memorabilia came in many forms such as bidding in an auction for a quilt or favorite item or browsing around the square through the many arts and crafts booths which also had items which delighted the children and those selecting "speciality gifts," etc. .

Happy to say there was plenty of

food and drink and no one had to "lick the skillet." If you missed it this year, mark your calendars because "Lick­ skillet" is always on the third Sunday of October.

for the first time since undergoing heart surgery last July. We were also happy to have Nancy Helm and her nine-month-old daughter, Katie.

Nancy, who lives in Australia, is the daughter of the Jerry Sijanskys and granddaughter of the Frank Sijanskys.

Other out-of-town members present were Gerilynn Sijansky, a flight atten­ dant with Continental Airways, cur­ rently based in Dallas and Angie Hrncir, a student at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Tomas Brdicka from Praha, Czechos­ lovakia was introduced by Brother Jerry Elzner. Tomas is a second-year student at the university in Pilsen and has been visiting with the Elzners for a month before returning to Czechos­ lovakia. We enjoyed talking to this personable young man.

Before adjourning, the membership voted to make our October charitable donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund, increasing the amount to $83 with individual donations.

Among our guests was Eleanor Turner of Sacremento, California, who came to Corpus Christi to be with her daughter, Glenda, for the birth of Glenda and Jimmy Elzner's son, scheduled to arrive the day after our meeting. I am happy to report that Jerry William Elzner weighed in at 7 pounds and 5 ounces as scheduled on October 28, 1991. Congratulations to the proud parents and grandparents, Eleanor Turner and Jerry and Milly Elzner. Little Jerry will be our newest SPJST member.

Thank you to the youth club from all of us for a lovely dinner and a lovely afternoon.

Since our Secretary-Reporter Helen Pavelka was unable to attend this meeting, I was asked to send in a report to the Vestnik in her place. Our next meeting will be November 17 at 2:00 p.m. at Sokol Hall. Members are asked to bring something for a "svacina" after the meeting.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News The annual meeting of Lodge 88 will be Sunday, December 8th. This will be an all-day affair, since we have the monthly and yearly meeting. Be sure and make note of this. We usually start at 10:00 a.m. and continue until late in the evening. At this meeting the of­ ficers for 1992 will be elected and also the 46 delegates to the 26th Conven­ tion in Victoria, Texas which is June 14-17, 1992, will be selected.

Czech Day on Sunday, October 27, 1991 at Lodge 88 was a very success­ ful day. We had a good crowd of fine people. The turkey dinner was deli­ cious=there was a great deal of work by some of our members put into this project. Thanks to all the ladies who brought good pastries to the Birthday Club pastry booth. Lillie Spies always is in charge of that booth with a de­ pendable group of ladies helping her and they made a good amount of money. (It's an all-day job.) ·

Announcing New Youth Club Member From Lodge 160, San Angelo Six-old-year Roxanne Halfmann is the daughter of Debbie and James Halfmann. She also has a brother named Jimmy Halfmann.

Her grandparents are Stanley and Martha Broz. Her grandfather serves as District IV director.

Roxanne focuses her interest on tap and ballet dancing.

Dear Leaders, Members and Friends: I appreciate this chance to thank the youth club members of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, for their fine perfor­ mances and their working together as a team to put together a spook house.

The spook house was part of the enter­ tainment that was planned by the mother lodge on Halloween night for lodge members and the community.

The part that they helped to play in keeping the kids off the streets and in a safe environment on Halloween night, will certainly be remembered favorably by lodge members and mem­ bers of the community.

Dear Readers, Fall is surely upon us and the trees have certainly. turned to the golden colors which made a nice day for Dis­ trict V Halloween party held at our Lodge No. 142 on Saturday, October 26th.

We had a very nice .attendance of youth club members and those children who came as guests. We also had many adults who came to enjoy with us. There was a wide variety of cos­ tumes · worn by lots of children and also adults.

The evening included a Halloween costume parade, grabbing for apples that were hanging from the ceiling and two pinatas which everyone enjoyed racing for the candy.

We had a visit from a very interest­ ing "bag lady" who was our own Bar­ bara Linney and following her and Some participants of Lodge 177 spraying her with bug spray was our Youth Club Spook House, Front DYC Marie Stayton. President Dan Borak called the meet­ ing to order. Jared Dybala led the Pledge of Allegiance and called the roll of members.

Martha Baros read the minutes of the .

September meeting. They were ap­ proved as read. Jared also gave the treasurer's report.

The members discussed the District VI meeting to be held on November 10 in Ganado and our youth club Christmas party.

Door prizes were awarded. Jennifer and Lisa Reck served refreshments while we made Halloween decorations.

We will use these decorations at the Czech Home for the Aged in Hillje.

The next meeting was set for Novem­ ber 7, 1991 in the Commercial State Bank Gold Room at 7:00 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 88 hosted the annual Czech Day on October 27, 1991. I am pleased to say there was a huge turnout.

The youth helped the Men's Club sell tickets for their project for four tickets to win a $75 gift certificate.

We enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner while listening to festive Czech folk songs.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar came down for the occasion.

At 5:00 p.m. the District V Royalty led the Parade of Costumes to open the dance. It was a fun day.

Dear Readers, We are planning another nursing home trip before Christmas. Our awesome, making ice cream with the residents in our section has seemed to make them love us, even though they might not remember us. Dementhia or Alzheimer is what they are suffering from, with no family to see them. They appreciate the time we spend, singing, talking and even dancing with them.

I invite all members to attend this event, not for you, but for the people who are forgotten by their family. So long for now. And hope to see you there.

Funeral services for Terry Urbanek of Rosenberg were held Friday, June 7 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Needville with Rev. Richard Avery officiating. Burial was in the Needville Public Cemetery.

Survivors include his. father, Otto Ur­ banek of Needville; his mother, Gladys Chabisek of Needville; sons, Terry Lee and Joel Urbanek of Sweeny; brothers, Glenn Urbanek of Rosenberg and Dale Urbanek of Needville.

Brother Bill is survived by his one son, Robert L. Jost of Rockdale and three grandchildren.

His wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death in 1981.

Brother Jost had been an employee of L.L. Sams and Sons and Imperial Furniture Company. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and an SPJST member since April 1969.

Sister Kolaja was born in February 1907 at Willow, Oklahoma. She was a member of St. Paul' s Presbyterian Church in Needville.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen G. Stone of Bellaire; a sister, Frances Bobbitt of Houston; grandchildren, R.T. Stone of Damon and Rose Stone of Bellaire.

Brother Marvin Tiedt passed away Thursday, October 23, 1991 in Fayette Memorial Hospital in La Grange.

Funeral services for Brother Tiedt were held Saturday, October 26 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Robert Braun officiating. Burial was in the Fayetteville City Cemetery.

He was born in Fayette County August 30, 1911, the son of the late Fritz C. and Selma (Meinen) Tiedt. He was united in marriage with Nollie Wecheta on November 26, 1934 in Live Oak Hill. He was a brakeman on the railroad and was a member of the United Transportation Union, the SPJST and St. Paul Lutheran Church of Fayetteville.

Only immediate survivor is his wife, Nollie Tiedt of Fayetteville. He was preceded in death by a brother.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15 at Kotch Funeral Home in West. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 p.m. October 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West.

Anne (Kolar) Muehlstein was born September 4, 1910 in Hill County, Texas. She married Johnny Muehlstein on June 24, 1935 in West and moved to Stamford in 1942 where she had lived for the past 49 years.

Anne Muehlstein was a homemaker, member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, a 55year member of the KJZT Society and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 90, all in Stamford.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Muehlstein of Stamford; two sons, Johnny Muehlstein, Jr. of Grapevine and Larry Muehlstein of Bedford; two daughters, Georgia Ann Hughes of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Mildred Powell of Georgetown, Texas; two brothers, Albert Kolar of West and J.V. Kolar Hillsboro; two sisters, Agnes Divin of Wimberly and Wilma Kolar of West; fifteen grandchildren and seven great­ grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass was held in Stam­ ford on Wednesday, October 23 in St. Ann's Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Ruben Luera, celebrant.

May our dear departed sister rest in eternal peace and may her memory live among us forever.

She will be missed by everyone.

50th Wedding Anniversary Otis J. Ceskas Mr. and Mrs. Otis J. Ceska of Waco celebrated their 50th wedding anniver­ sary with a reception, dinner and dance Saturday, November 9 at SPJST LINDEN HALL. Hosting the party were the couple' s daughter and son-in-law, LaNell and Elmer Brem of Lorena; Karen and Greg Hansen, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, of Irving; grandsons, Jerry Brem of Austin and Michael Brem of Lorena.

Otis Ceska and the former Emma Mae Navara, both of the Elk com­ munity, were married on November 11, 1941 at St. Mary of the Assump­ tion Catholic Church in Waco. Father J.P. O'Sullivan was celebrant.

Wedding attendants were John Mach, best man; Adolph Navara, witness

(deceased); Margurete Navara (Mach) (deceased) and Julia Ann Ceska (Pochobradsky) bridesmaids; and Charlie Kolenovsky (deceased) and Victor M. Pochobradský, groomsmen.

Ceska worked for the Veterans Ad­ ministration Hospital in Waco for 1 O years and retired from the City of Waco with 23 years of service. Mrs. Ceska worked for the State Depart­ ment of Public Welfare and retired from the City of Waco with 38 years of service.

The couple has lived in Waco all their married life and are members of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Waco.

All members of the Otis Ceska fami­ ly are members of SPJST Lodge No. 66 in Elm Mott.

Miss Klima Celebrates Birthday Christi Klima celebrated her eighteenth birthday on October 23, 1991 with the help of her sister, Jamie Klima.

Christi is the daughter of Gena Klima of Aledo, Texas and Alvin James Klima of Taylor, Texas.

Her grandparents are Mrs. Davis of Louisiana and Alvin and Evelyn Klima of Taylor, Texas.

S.P .J.S.T. Rest Home No. II Report There were no new residents to join the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville, Texas in October; staff-­ Susan Stevens, Pat Wilson and Debbie Westerfield.

Welcome back from Polly Ryon Hospital in Richmond, Texas were Gladys Hix, Julia Novak and Birdie Pech.

Every Monday morning, Olie Eix­ man, Nona Eixman, Alice Bergen, Ruby Lee Oberhoff and Willie Mae Tielke come to have a sing-a-long.

Svatopluk Čech, as mentioned else­ where in my article, was writing many articles for the newspapers and magazines. He was also a member of several editorial boards and founded in 1879 with his brother, Vladimír, and with Servacius B. Heller the monthly Květy (The Flowers), which he edited until 1899. v Svatopluk Cech stressed in his overall literary activity the importance of the ethnic awareness and of love towards the Czech language and cul­ ture. Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze našeho řádu se konala v naší síni v pátek dne l. listopadu 1991 po sedmé hodině večer. Po zahájení schůze vicepresidentem Johnem Emerym jsme vzdali počtu naší vlajce a minutou ticha jsme uctili památku naší drahé sestry Vilmy Gaíserové, která nedávno zemřela, Upřímně želíme jejího odchodu z tohoto světa a pozůstalé rodině vyjadřujeme naši soustrast. čest její památce!

Za nepřítomnosti presidenta našeho řádu se ujal vedení schůze náš vicepresi­ dent John Emery. Nejdříve přečetla zápis z minulé schůze tajemnice Anne Emeryová a po opravách byl zápis přijat tak, jak byl čten. Pak naše · tajemnice přečetla některé dopisy, které přišly k našemu řádu. Z Hlavní úřadovny přišel dopis o počtu delegátů na konvenci naší jednoty ve Victorii v létě přtštího roku, od řádu č. 133 přišel dopis s nabídkou o zaslání oznámky do jejich brožurky k výročí založení řádu v San Antoniu. Z ubytovny starších členů v Taylor přišlo poděkování za příspěvek od našeho řádu k zakoupení piána a od Nadace vyššího vzdělání přišla obálka se seznamem přlspěvovatelů a se žádostí o zaslání případného dalšího příspěvku. Nadace nyní má jenom několik desítek tisíc dolarů vybrat k tomu, aby se částka na založení katedry českého jazyka na Texaské universitě v Austíně ve státě Texasu zaokrouhlila na jeden milion, když universita přispěje určitou částkou na doplnění čásstky z nadace. Nadace si jistě přeje, aby se sbírka ukončila co nejdříve a proto všichni naši krajané, kteří se cítíte roduvěrnýrní občany státu Texas a také vy, kteřt jste mimo stát Texas, pošlete jakýkoliv příspěvek na adresu pokladníka nadace: CEFT, clo Ben Trčálek, Jr., Rt. 3, Box 111-A, Caldwell, TX. 77836.

Sestra Maxine Šefčíková podala zajímavou zpřavu o změnách v počtu členů a apokračuje ve vybíraní členských příspěvků.

Bratr Freddie Kaluža přednesl zprávu o finančním stavu našeho řádu a byla to příjemná zpráva.

Mezi nedodělanými záležitostmi k pro­ jednání byla naše vánoční besídka. Bratr Kaluža již připravil vánoční program na neděli ve tří hodiny odpoledne dne 8. pro­ since 1991. Rádi bychom přivítali opět naše členstvo v hojném počtu a pro děti přijede svatý Mikuláš přímo ze Severního pólu a přiveze jim pěkné dárečky a také pro dospělé se najde nějaké příjemné překvapení.

Bratr R. Matuš oznámil, že stavbní úprava síně je v podstatě dokončena a nyní bude nutno jenom dokončit drobné věci na zdích a v kuchyni. Rovněž bude nutno zařídit příjezd pro lidi,, kteřt jsou tělesně postižení a používají kolečkové židle. Také by mělo být více dveří ze síně v případě nebezečí, jak to žádá zákon.

Pak se projednávala výše výhry při losování a byla odhlasová na nová částka v hodnotě pěti dolarů.

13. listopada 1991 příštím roce 1992 bude konána 6. března 1992 v 7 hodin večer. Za delegáty našeho řádu na konvenci naší jednoty byli zvoleni John a Anne Emeryovi, Maxine Šefčíková, Freddie Kaluža a náhradníkem je Rudy Šefčik.

Pak proběhly volby úředníků u našeho řádu: presidentem je John Emery, vicepresidentem je Rudy Šefčík, tajemnice a dopisovatelka e Anne Emeryova, pokladruk-Freddíe Kaluža, účetní-Maxine Šefčíková, sestra Lillian Matušová je předsedkyně kuchyňského výboru a Jan Vaculík byl zvolen za českého dopisovatele.

Bratr Rudy Šefčík vyhrál losování a po ukončení schůze setrvalo členstvo v příjemné zábavě, pojedly se sladkosti a obložené chlebíčky a vypilo se nějaké pití, takže ti z vás, kteří jste nepřišli na schúí, můžete skutečně litovat. Možná, že na přtštl schůzi se můžete přesvědčit, co se u našeho řádu děje. V první řadě však je na pořadu naše vánoční besídka v neděli 8. prosince 1991 a doufám, že mnozí z vás se přijdou pobavit na třetí hodinu odpoledne. Nezapomeňte vzít sebou děti, vnoučátka a pravnoučátka, abychom se všichni pěkně pobavili.

Létání v Beskydech Když se řekne paragliding Ještě před pouhými několika lety provozovalo paragliding snad jen 50 sportovců, dnes jde jejich počet do tisíců.

Rožnov p. Radh. se kromě jiných sportů stal také střediskem, kde aktivní činnost vyvíjejí piloti těchto padákových kluzákú.

Je to přlblížně čtyři a půl kilogramu speciální polyamidové tkaniny O ploše 25 metrů čtverečních, sedmdesát dlouhých přibližně 5 metrů a sedací závěs. Nejde o skutečný padák, nýbrž O speciální konstrukci křídla, jehož tuhý tvar se utvoř! v okamžiku startu nafouknutím 19 komor okolním povětřím.

Výrobou vrchhků a výukou paraglidingu se v Rožnově pod R. zabývá firma Boomerang Paragliders. členem tohoto konsorcia je také JAROSLAV JINDRA, parašutista, horolezec a ínstruktor pílotů padákových kluzáků, oprávněný vydávat podle směrnic LAA pilotní licence.

K získání pilotní licence musí zájemce absolvovat zdravotní prohlídku a kurs zakončený zkouškou z teorie a praxe.

Jaroslav Jindra má za sebou několik desítek sportovruch seskoků z letadla, skály lezl asi osm tet. Tyto rizikové sporty jej však zcela neuspokojovaly a když se seznámil s paraglidingem, zcela tomuto sportu propadl. ..Zpočátku," řekl Jaroslav Jindra, ,,je to vzrušení, že se vů bee vznáším v povětří. Teď, kdy mám za sebou přes sto letových hodin, spíš vychutnávám zvláštnosti tetu. Létá se ve svahovém větru, ale díky zlepšené konstrukci křídel také termika. v termice jsem se dostal až do výšky 700· metrů nad start a to je tady v Beskydech u padákových kluzáků hodně. ***was once deemed a Lead Risk. What harmless trace of lead in a child' s bloodstream is now viewed as a serious threat. Recently, the federal government slashed the amount of lead in the blood considered safe by 60 per­ cent. The action was prompted by new studies showing that even very low levels of blood-borne lead can damage a child's brain. The tougher standard adds millions to the roster of children at risk from lead. Leaded paint was banned in 1978, but chips and dust from the paint pose a threat in any older home.

A pediatrician can measure your child's lead level with a direct blood­ lead test.

The once standard erythrocyte protoporphyrin test, which measures a lead byproduct in the blood, is too imprecise for the new, lower level. Some health plans cover the $20 or so cost of the test. Experts recommend testing children between 6 months and a year of age, then once or twice over the next several years. The exception is people living in neighbor­ hoods where studies have shown no worrisome levels of lead in children, something the local health department should know.
