Sunday, October 13th was the date of District III Fall meeting at Lodge No. 25, Ennis hosting the event. The day was beautiful as far as the weather was concerned, however, the occasion did not bring out as great an amount of members as one would expect. What the reason of this is difficult to specu­ late; it could be football, baseball playoffs, fishing, too much going on, indifference or just plain laziness, etc., one never - knows - maybe it is just plain Summer-Fall "dol-drums" be­ cause it seems that Spring meetings tend to bring out more members to par­ ticipate in the district and society af­ fairs.

This writer feels that our member­ ship is far-too-indifferent in the ad­ vantages of belonging to a fraternal insurance society as is our SPJST. We hear constantly about the many in­ surance companies that are operating "on-the-brink of disaster" because of bad investments creating a low solven­ cy of their assets. Consider what your insurance is worth if your insurer is near bankruptcy! Recently, many of you probably have heard or seen on TV how hard it is to procure loans ·­ now, all of a sudden, we have a crop of new type of "con-artists" appearing who promise to get you a loan of al­ most any proportion, but you have to pay a certain sum "up-front" in cash before that happens. They (loan ap­ plicants) fill out some "supposedly legal" papers to leave with you and tell you: "You will be contacted when and where to go get your loan." When they ("con-artists") leave, so does your "up­ front" money and "You have been con­ tacted." Yes, that is all the contact you will have with them or anyone else.

Brothers and Sisters: Just think how far-different that is from getting a loan from our SPJST. At any rate, please start taking an interest and do some serious thinking about these aspects of the SPJST Order.

Getting back to District III meeting, after convening the meeting, for­ malities were taken care of and minutes of the Spring meeting were read and approved.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar presented some very informa­ tive details on the recently - held NFCA (National Fraternal Congress of America) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. which was ad· dressed by President Bush, Senator Dole and Governor Romney. Brother Leshikar, too, stressed the need for our membership to take a more active in· terest in our organization. He con­ tinued by mentioning our rapidly • approaching SPJST Convention in Victoria in June 1992, and the various preparation for it.

District III Director Sid Pokladník also filled in details of the NFCA meeting and gave a thorough report on the district' s activities. In addition, he gave an interesting report on Czech Day held October 6th at Texas State Fair and the attendance of the Brno, Czechoslovakia officials pertaining to the "Sister Cities of Dallas-Brno" pro­ gram including the visit of Czechos­ lovak Ambassador to the United States. Rita Klimova for the occasion.

The Czech Day turned out to be one of the best ever held, and those connected with.itare.to be congratulated. ·

The main thing both Brother Leshikar and Brother Pokladník stressed was the need for "volun­ teerism" to be observed among our membership for the benefit of all of our members included.

Members of the By-Law, Finance, Insurance and Publication Committees stressed the importance of districts, lodges and individual members sub­ mitting their proposed changes and recommendations to the respective committees.

We wish to thank host Lodge No. 25 membership for their cordial hospitality and the delicious meal which was enjoyed by those who were · present. We also wish them a very suc­ cessful turnout for their 2-day 20th an­ niversary celebration of Lodge No, 25's home, which is ,a great asset to the Ennis community.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas volunteered to host the District III Spring meeting and Lodge No. 25 volunteered to host the District III Youth Achievement Day on the fourth Sunday in June; and if Lodge No. 66 cannot host the next district meeting, Lodge No. 25 com­ mitted to also host the Spring District III meeting.

We feel certain that you will be read­ ing more details in the minutes sub­ . mitted by the new secretary and probably other individual members.

One of the ordinary past times in which individuals indulge is criticism of the actions and policies of others.

And why not? After all, it is so con­ venient, costs nothing, and gives so much satisfaction. To indulge in it one does not even have to move a hand. It takes very little power, and so everybody is in position to indulge in it. And best of all, it costs nothing; it is free as the air we breathe.

Furthermore, all one needs is a will­ ing listener and someone to criticize.

All individuals make mistakes, and so it is the easiest thing in the world to find someone to criticize. Most people are more interested in hearing about the failings of other people than about the good they do. And so to find a willing listener is also no problem.

It costs so little to indulge in criticism and, yet, it gives so much satisfaction. It brings home the effect to the critic that even people who are highly respected and in positions or responsibility make mistakes. And there comes the crowning realization that the critic is not the only blunderer in the world. He finds companions in his misery. With the pressure of remorse and regrets removed from his mind, he can sleep peacefully and go along through life without letting him­ self be disturbed by his own blunder.

And it is all so cheap!

But to be a good and honest critic is not an easy matter. That requires work, intelligence, humility, patience, hones­ ty, and above all charity.

To be in the position to make a cor­ rect judgement of a given case requires a thorough understanding of all cir­ cumstances involved. To acquire this understanding requires intelligence and work.

One who is honest enough to make a just criticism realizes that in making a criticism he is talcing upon himself a responsibility. Such a one is very much aware of his own failings and in venturing upon criticism of any kind, he will aim at higher purposes than his own satisfication.

In the end it turns out that those who have enough intelligence, humility, patience, honesty, and charity to be in the position to make a really honest criticism -· those are the least inclined to venture upon any kind of criticism.

And so while cheap criticism abounds, really-honest criticism is rare.

From President's Office Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 - December 25, 1991 The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting Oc­ tober 1, 1991 through December 25, 1991.

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

A donation of $1.00 per member is suggested for this drive. Any donation amount would certainly be appreciated to help defray the cost of higher educa­ tion, All donors' names will be published in the Vestnik.

Some rules to remember: This is co-ed tournament and each team must consist of at least two females. When the ball is played more than once, one of the contacts must be made by a female. Players must be at least 16 years of age the day of the tournament. There are two categories "A" and "B," and lodges may enter one or two teams in each category.

Explanation of an "A" Team is that spiking is allowed unless it is purposely directed at a female. The "B" Team does not allow any power spiking, but a mild tap downward would not be called a spike. This decision will be left up to the referee. If either team reaches a score of 11-0, that team is classed as a win­ ner. Each team should have a roster of the players for each of their teams to give to the State FAC.

All teams will play a double elimination tournament. No team roster shall ex­ ceed twelve players and a member may only play on one team.

IMPORT ANT: Please .notiřy the State FAC by November 4th if your lodge team is planning to play in the State Tournament.

District V Fall Family Day September 15, 1991 Registration began at 11:30 a.m. along with a social. All entries for the Needlepoint, Kolaches, Horseshoes and Youth Christmas Ornament con­ tests were setting up their item or developing their strategy. Before lunch was served, a prayer of thanks was of­ fered by Jerry Prochazka (65).

The District V Fall Family Day meeting was called to order at 12:04 p.m. on September 15, 1991 at the American Legion Hall. Colors were presented by Amanda Hermis (142), Jason Hermis (142) and Misty Setlif (172). The National Anthem was sung

by Fred Buri (142) accompanied by his .son, John Buri (142) on the accordian.

Helen Hegwood (88) then sang the Czech National Anthem.

Lodge No. 91 President Alvin Franta welcomed everyone on behalf of the hosting Lodges No. 65 and No. 91, and thanked all for coming and supporting the local lodges and the district and charged everyone to enjoy the day.

President Mikeska ( 196) called for the election of the Rest Homes Direc­ tor. Louis Hanus (88) and Lonnie Los­ tak (139) were nominated. Secret ballet was called for. A Ballet Com­ mittee was chosen. Each candidate was asked to say a few words in their own behalf. A vote was taken, ballets were in and counted: Louis Hanus--32, Lon­ nie Lostak--58.

Treasurer Lorenda Baldwin (139) reported as of July 31, 1991, a balance of $4,712.24 in the General Fund and $4,628.17 in the Youth Fund; this in­ cludes interest. Second Vice President Mary Ann Kieschnick (142) welcomed our guests, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and Otis Divin of Lodge No. 51.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was asked to address the members. He brought greetings from the Home Office and asked everyone to stay and enjoy the day that has been planned for all. He stated that the Plan­ ning Committee has been formed for the convention next year in Victoria.

Presidents of each lodge will receive notice and an invitation to participate in the purchasing of ads for the Con­ vention Brochure. District VI will be hosting the convention, first time an entire district has done this. They have had some very good meetings so watch the Vestnik for details. DYC Marie Stayton introduced her youth leaders, assistants and LITs. The youth is the future of the SPJST, so please support them. Camp was great as always. Monte Baldwin missed going to camp so the LITs performed the initiation ceremony so he would not feel left out. He was awarded a camp T-shirt for being a good sport.

Marie then introduced the Royalty-­ Queen Melissa Havemann, Duchess Tiffany Petter, King Keith Kieschnick and Duke Nicholas Havemann. Melis­ sa thanked all for coming and asked all to visit the youth booths. Marie asked all to continue to support District V youth because we are growing. If any lodge wants to get a youth club started in their lodge, she or her Assistant Barbara Linney will help with the set

The October meeting was called to order by Vice President Wilberť Mikeska and all officers were present.

Members stood for the Pledge of Al­ legiance and remained standing for a moment of silent prayer for deceased members, Clayton Cabla and Agnes Leshikar.

Member on the sick is Randy Lesikar.

Board report was given by Nancy Posvar. Two new members accepted were Joan Vanicek and Ronnie Marek.

Members then received the proposed Rules and Regulation changes and dis­ cussed them in full.

It was decided to hold our Christmas party on December 8; happy hour at 3:00 p.m., program at 4:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a salad and dessert.

Birthday celebrants are Joe Baker and Carl Macek.

Anniversary celebrants include Barbara and Robert Macek,· and Ryan and Stacie Sebek.

We hope you all had a good day.

I would like to take this time to tell everyone how much my parents, Jerry and LaVerne Cabla and myself ap­ preciate all the phone calls, cards, food, thoughts, prayers, visits and flowers we received since the tragic death of my brother, Clayton Cabla. Results Of Lodge No. 54 West Meeting

' Our third quarterly meeting of Lodge No. 54 was convened at 7:15 p.m. by President Ted Kocian who also welcorned the guests. All officers were present, except Vice President John Emery and Recording Secretary Anne Emery.

Everyone took part in the recitation of the pledge to our U.S. flag, also a moment of silent tribute was observed to our general membership, especially Sister Rosie Girard who died July 20, 1991 and Sister Albina (Beanie) Kacir who died July 22, 1991. May they rest in peace. (Sister Kacir and her husband, George Kacir, who preceded her in death, were very faithful members of Lodge 54 -- always performing fraternal, valuable deeds for our mem­ bership.)

In the absence of Sister Emery, President Kocian appointed Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik to read the minutes of our previous quarterly meeting, which stood approved as read.

President Kocian appointed Rudy Sefcik to take notes of the proceedings of our meeting.

Numerous items of correspondence were acknowledged, mainly from Sister Albina Kacir' s family, Supreme Lodge pertaining information about the convention, fraternal festivals, fraternalist of the year, state volleyball tournament, and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I. The collection of local lodge dues and membership status reports given

by Sister Sefcik stood approved as read. Luana Vana is our new member and insurance was increased on Johnnie J. Mynar III, Teresa Mynar and Jeremy Veselka, all transacted by

Sales Representative Freddie Kaluza who we are very grateful to for his continued interest. Names of trans­ ferees were also acknowledged.

A favorable report was then give by Treasurer Freddie Kaluza who also discussed various donations. The lodge approved a donation to Sokol Gymnas­ tic Association of West and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I for their piano fund, which are worthy causes.

Sister Sefcik, FAC, mentioned the "Certificate of Appreciation ceremony and reception which involved the SPJST Home Office (represented by District III Director Sid Pokladník) and Lodge No. 54 officers for Sister Terezie Marek who turned 96 years of age. The affair at West Raven Hospitality Room, with the assistance of Sister Evelyn Bezdek, was very suc­ cessful and Sister Marek thanked those who were responsible for the occasion.

President Kocian announced an in­ surance· seminar was going to take place October 9 at Lodge 6 and en­ couraged our sales representatives to attend.

Sister Lil Matus announced that Oc­ tober 13 Sokol Gymnastic Association of West will sponsor a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, to be served at 11 :00 a.m., and all proceeds will go towards Lone Star Hall beautification. Donations for an auction from neighboring fraternal or­ ganizations, business associates and/or individuals will be appreciated.

Sister Sefcik was asked to compose a brief article pertaining to Lone Star Hall for the West News and Vestnik, which she obliged.

Rudy Sefcik announced that the Prague Musicians (Prazsti muzikanti) will perform at Lone Star Hall on Oc­ tober 5 and admission to be $8.00 per person, which is being sponsored by Sokol Zizka of Dallas.

Further business concerned our an­ nual meeting on No~ember 1 ~hich ineludes reports, election of officers and election of delegates; six members, who attended the majority of lodge meetings for four years, are qualified to be elected to serve at the 26th SPJST Convention in June 1992 at Victoria.

Christmas party for Lodge 54 membership is scheduled for Sunday, December 8 and more discussion will take place to finalized the plans. Mem­ hers, kindly take note and reserve this date with us for the annual event.

happy for people who can travel and see the other side of the world.

On August 12, 1991 Edna and Willie Wehring boarded an airplane for Los Angeles and Nadi, Fiji, the Republic of Fiji, where the welcome is as warm as the sun. Straddles the International Date line is often referred to as the crossroads of the Pacific. It is home to over 700,000 people who speak the of­ ficial English language Figian and Hindustani. The temperature is 70 degrees to 80 degrees year around, which leads to a very good crop of sugar cane, bananas, potatoes, corn and tapioca.

Natives make baskets by hand, do woodcarving strips, lush rain forests, and grass cover hill, plants, palm trees and hibicus flowers are very restful to the eyes and mind. All farms are worked by hand or if lucky, oxen are used for heavy work of pulling or plowing.

Tuesday was a lost day to crossing the date line. Wednesday they arrived in Nadi Airport, traveled 45 miles to Yanca Island, which is 155 acres of resort living, named the Fijian. It was a great day with the evening welcome dinner of seven courses featuring Wel­ lington roast beef. Thursday was a free day--do as you please, and Friday they went to Sudva, the island Capitol.

They traveled on the Queen' s Road, seeing various villages, farms and common markets, also Fire Walkers from Meke. Saturday was a free day, again, and Sunday they had an eleven­ course farewell dinner, featuring Morell beef roast. Then on Monday, they boarded a plane for home. They were gone for one week of living, without phone, worries or obligations­ =just enjoying life. I'm always so

On October I, 1991 Jean Whitehead Kucera died. She was the widow of Ludwig A. Kucera, an attorney. She lived in Houston for many years. She graduated from the University of Houston with a BS degree and a Master of Business Administration.

She was a member of St. Luke' s United Methodist Church. Jean was an active member of the Blue Bird Circle for over 30 years, and served as presi­ dent for one year. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, the River Oaks Rose Club and many other service or­ ganizations throughout the city. She is survived by her daughter, Lilly Kucera Pryor of Houston; two sisters, Evelyn Newton, and Lilly Keen of Houston, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 3 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with burial at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

A personal comment! Lud. and Jean were beautiful people-v-I loved them both, and may God bless their only daughter, Lilly, also a very fine lady.

Mrs. Georgia Zaludek asked me to tell in my writeup that her late hus­ band, Joe Zaludek's sister, Mrs. Helen Hudgins is in ICU in Northwest Memorial Hospital. She is hoping that some of Lodge 88 members remember her, and go visit her.

She also said that John Zaludek's wife, Nell died.

Lodge 88, Houston Scholarship Fund Once again, Lodge No. 88 will be awarding scholarships for the 1992 school year. Application forms can now be picked up at the Lodge No. 88 office at 1435 Beall Street and returned to the office before December 31, 1991.

To qualify, a student must be a mem­ ber of Lodge No. 88 for a period of at least two years and file application during the senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of 1992.

Lodge No. 130, Dallas Hopefully, this lovely fall weather is being enjoyed by everyone. I know it is a nice change from the summer heat.

Recently, our Beseda group traveled to Yukon, Oklahoma to perform at their Czech Fest, and the cooler tempera­ tures seemed to put a little more "zip" in our dancing. The folks there in Yukon were very friendly and we hope to be asked to return, again.

So many of our Lodge No. 130 mem­ bers were involved with the delegation from Czechoslovakia, along with a host of other families and friends, I am sure the delegation went home with many good memories.

On October 14 we held our regular monthly meeting at Lodge No. 84. We had a moment of silence for our deceased member, Martha Funda, after opening our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes, treasurer' s report and financial secretary's report were all approved as presented. Cor-. respondence included a letter from Lodge No. 133 in San Antonio regard­ ing their Diamond Jubilee Celebration, we voted to have an ad in their souvenir program. We also had cor­ respondence from Supreme Lodge regarding the 1992 Convention in Vic­ toria.

The Beseda dancers performed for the. Mercedes Benz and Traders Vil­ lage Octoberfests, and are looking for­ ward to going to San Angelo the first weekend in December.

Czech Day at the State Fair was the best ever, with the Czech bands enter­ taining all day. The Sister City delega­ tion from Brno enjoyed the day very much.

Nominating Committee was chosen and includes Stanley Vrla, David Hlavenka and Suzanne Vrla.

Lodge No. 139, Danbury At the meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139, Tommie Lostak introduced and welcomed Zdenek and Svatava Lostak of Plumlov, Czechoslovakia.

Zdenek and Svatava are relatives of Tommie Lostak and Ora Faye Wilson who, along with Lorenda Baldwin, have been showing them the sights of Central and South Texas.

The meeting got under way with Lonnie Lostak calling the meeting to order. Lorenda Baldwin read the minutes of the last meeting. She read correspondence and announced five members had transferred from the Iowa Colony lodge to Lodge No. 139.

In the absence of Eloise Lostak, Presi­ dent Lonnie gave the treasurer's report. Other correspondence was read

It was announced that after the Sep­ tember 11 meeting Lonnie and Eloise Lostak, Lorenda Baldwin, Monte and Wesley Baldwin and Tommie Los tak drove to Angleton to present Adolph Zapalac with his 50-year membership pin.

It was voted to give each lodge mem­ ber of 70 years of age or over, a turkey for Christmas. The turkeys will be delivered by Lorenda Baldwin as­ sisted by Tommie Lostak.

Danbury 4-H Club Leader Monte Baldwin expressed his appreciation to the lodge, the Supreme Lodge, and to Sales Representative Lorenda Baldwin for the 30 T-shirts which were given to participants of the steer scramble at the Brazoria County Fair. The scramblers were happy to receive the shirts and were seen wearing them throughout the week of the fair.

Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena Hello Brothers and Sisters: On September 25th we had our covered dish supper with a big turnout, which was before our regular meeting.

Thanks to the lodge for providing the meat and the members for the covered dish they brought, it sure was good and plenty of food.

Then at 7:30 p.m. President Jerry Dressler called the meeting to order, with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members. Roll call showed all officers were present.

Sister Lillia Mae Peter read the minutes of our August meeting and the executive meeting; they were approved as read.

Sister Walla read her financial report and the rest of the committees gave their reports, which were good to hear.

There was no old business, therefore, we went into new business which was to appoint a Remuneration Committee; they were Irvin Theiss, Alvin Sefcik, Joe Krenek and Jerry Dressler. The Rules and Regulations Committee con­ sists of John Valusek, Henrietta Krenek and Vickie Dressler.

We had the election of Fraternalist of the Year for our lodge and Sister Vickie Dressler was elected. Good luck to you, Vickie, and win the State Fraternalist of the Year.

At this time the youth club members came . into the meeting. Brother Dressler called on the youth club report. The youth came up to give their report first. They presented President Brother Dressler with a jar of pepper­ mint candy. Brother Dressler opened the candy jar and everybody enjoyed the candy. Thanks to the youth for your thoughtfulness. Then the youth thanked the lodge for sending them to the SPJST Czech Festival in Belton and the night out at Seaton Lodge No. 47, which they enjoyed very much.

Our next meeting will be October 23 at 7:30 p.m., so please come to the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:40p.m.

Trustees' Report=Phil Weadock was absent. Permission was given for the use of our hall for a wedding reception for the marriage of our son, Kevin "Tater" Beck on November 16th.

Jennifer Ann Fritz was accepted in our lodge as a new member who has been in attendance for years.

We had one guest Billy Wayne Mitchell.

Barbara Rosenkranz asked for volun­ teer help for the Halloween party and signed up volunteers for games. Our lodge's Halloween party will be Thursday, October 31 from 6:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. All area children and adults are invited to attend.

Volunteers are urged to be at the lodge at 6:30 p.m. on October 30 to decorate the hall and set-up games.

Thanks to Bobby Fritz=the vents in the ceiling now work; thanks Bobby, you are a good working member.

Academy ISD asked for a donation for their October .26 Carnival and members voted to donate a ceiling fan, again, this year.

The members decided to have our Christmas party on Friday, December 13 and Harvey LaFlame is to prepare steaks, again, and members are asked to bring desserts; the time will be set at our next meeting.

A Nominating Committee was ap­ pointed, those being Linda Johnson, Alex Garcia and Edgar Childress.

Our next meeting will also be elec­ tions, so come out and vote on Novem­ ber 13th.

Lodge No. 180, Burleson Our October meeting opened with President Louis Grochoske leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ten members were present and our guest was John Hilsher.

All officers gave good reports.

Our deep sympathy is extended to the family of Regina Sheler on the death of their mother.

We wish Mydell and Louis Grochoske happy motoring to Dayton, Ohio for Louis' World War II com­ pany reunion and also to Ernest and Julia Dueser who will visit their son in Utah.

Our four-lodge Christmas dinner will be held on December 1st, with Harold Strand providing the music. Everyone is welcome. .

After adjournment everyone enjoyed a luncheon.

Birthday Club Of Lodge 88, Houston On October 9 the Birthday Club meeting was called to order at 11: 15 a.m. by President Lowrina Lindemann.

The roll was called and we had a very small crowd due to the many fall tours that are being taken up East now. I hope all are having a wonderful trip.

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes of the September meeting which were accepted as read.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave a very fine report--very accurate I must say.

Mary Kosut, the sunshine lady and chaplin, is in the hospital. She was brave and had both knees operated on.

She is now in the Rehab Center taking therapy and presumably is doing fine.

She will be going home in another week from the Woman' s Hospital.

Also Kathy. Trefell had talked to Mary Schenburn; she and Louis are in bad health, Mary will have surgery on both eyes. We all wish you great success.

Willie Mae Stang has been real sick, too. Joe Miksch, who has been our caretaker for many years and was al­ ways a great help to the Birthday Club Sisters, is very sick, again. We all miss him so much. We have several fine men who are filling in for Joe who are so helpful to us, too; and we do ap­ preciate all this good help.

President Lowrina Lindemann thanked the Minnie Bravenec family for the generous gift they gave to the Sisters.

We will have a covered dish dinner, again, on November 6; our regular din­ ner and games. Flo Orsag will help serve the dinner, but she needs at least 2 more ladies to help her. The cake donors for November 6 are Delia Kite, Pearl Hanka, Josephine Buri, Alma

McNaspy, Flo Orsag and Delores Con­ don for Helen Hegwood. Then on November 13, our meeting day, we have the following donors for cakes: Marie Pokluda, Rita Alexander, Lillie Spies, Inez Jeanes, Evelyn Mikulas and Louise Kadlecek.

Lillie Spies who is in charge of the pastry booth on Czech Day asked for help on October 27th. She got a num­ ber of ladies who volunteered, namely: Rita Alexander, Mrs. Edwin Luzano, Flo Orsag, Juanita Simons and Mary Kosut are the birthday ladies in Oc­ tober, so Helen led us in song, "Happy Birthday" was sung by all.

The drawing of the prizes was next.

The Calcutta game was won by Florence Orsag and Rosalee Kostom.

We adjourned at 12:00 noon with Helen Hegwood giving a prayer and Grace for our meal.

Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Ladies Circle Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 meet­ ing on October 8 was called to order

by President Clara Cohen who wel­ comed everyone, especially some who have not attended lately and our guest, Mary Pavey.

Clara Marchioni read an essay titled "Thank God" and Rose Nieswiadomy gave "Happy Home Recipe" reading.

Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer's report were approved and filed as read.

A get well card was sent to Joyce Tesar who is feeling better, again, also Victor Murphy was unable to be with us because of a fall which resulted in some bruises.

Our pastry booth at the September Festival was very successful, thanks to all who contributed and worked in the booth. We realized over $300.00 for our efforts.

Old Business: We presently have 58 people signed up for our trip to West, which means some cars will be used with gasoline money provided.

New Business: Our December hos­ tesses will be in charge of our Christmas luncheon, which will con­ sist of turkey and all the trimmings.

The hostesses are Anna Lesikar, Laura Posival, Bettie Billington and Dona Hubenak. Bring a $3.00 gift if you wish to exchange gifts.

Birthday honorees were Mary Palachek, Millie Wruble, Mary Cihacek, Louise Oujesky, Mary Windham, Estelle Hurtík, Bill Kosarek, Dick Durham, Slim Waters and Frank Tesar.

Door prizes were won by Florence Greer, Esther Herrera, Betty Loyd and Bettie Billington.

Congratulations to Millie and Rudy Wruble on their celebration of 57 years of wedded bliss. Cheers to you!

Dallas Circle Of Czech Women Our October meeting was very brief because we were hosting the delega­ tion from our Sister City of Brno for lunch.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Lydia Dirkx who has been a member of Krouzek for many years.

A memorial service was held Sunday, October 6, 1991 - Evelyn Elsik, sister­ in-law of Libbie Elsik.

Bertha welcomed 43 members, 18 visitors. She also welcomed her mother's cousin and her son, Ruzania Perkarkova, and Vojtel Rezolik who are visiting from Czechoslovakia. Ber­ tha and Julius visited with them while they were in Czechoslovakia.

We also had cousins of Lillian Moran and Dorothy Reznik, Vaclav and Jaroslava Veverka who were visit­ ing from Czechoslovakia.

Mayor Pro-Tem Jack Evans from the Dallas City Council brought greetings from Mayor Strauss and how proud he was to have the citizens of Brno visit our great city.

Jerry Bartos said his "Father and grandfather were from the city of Brno.

He also said "How proud he was the delegates of Brno were able to visit our great city. He gave the delegates a T-shirt that read: "I visited Dallas and now I am Famous.

Vice Mayor Jiri Horak of Brno gave greetings to the citizens of Dallas and to the members of the Krouzek, He was grateful to the city and chairman of Sister City Milt Spaniel for their in­ vitation to visit Dallas. He was surprised to see how the Czechs were so close-knit and maintained their Czech heritage. Jiri also said "The delegates were happy to witness America and happy to appreciate Dal­ las and the new acquaintances they have made."

A plaque with the picture of City of Dallas which read: "To the Delegation of the Sister City of Brno for the Remembrance on your visit to Dallas, Texas October 3, 1991" was presented to each of the delegates. It was signed "Krouzek Ceskych Zen" (The plaque was in Czech.)

From Youth Leaders Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Meeting Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting was held Oc­ tober 4, 1991 with a fair attendance.

On September 29 the youth members and their parents went to Six Flags and they had a good time.

Cakes were brought by the youth to West Rest Haven on October 2nd.

On October 13 Tammi Dobecka, Celia Dobecka, Robert Dobecka, Sr., Peggy Dobecka and Willie Mae Schuetz attended District III fall meet­ ing at Lodge No. 25 in Ennis. They also had kolaches contest for the adults and Christmas ornament contest for the youth. Tammi Dobecka won second place in her age group and Celia Dobecka placed third in her age group. The attendance was good and everyone was very nice.

On October 25 we will have our Hal­ loween party with hot dogs plus all the trimmings and games.

Our youth members are working on Christmas items for the rest home.

Names were drawn by the dubbers for Christmas and also they are work­ ing on their Christmas program.

October birthday celebrant is Sherri Lenart.

.Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Youth Halloween Dance Hello!

Here I am again busy as always. Just a note to tell you that the SPJST Lodge No. 92 Youth Club will have their Hal­ loween Dance on Saturday, October 26 from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. . We will have a costume contest for adults (single) and group with youth ages 0-6, 6-12, 13-17.

We will also have a cake decoration contest for adults and youth (ages 6-12 and 13-17); and pumpkin decoration contest for youth in ages 6-12 and 1317.

In addition, there will be a cake walk. I am thanking in advance for all the cakes. All decorated cakes will be in the cake walk.

The music will be by Henry Rejcek Band.

Way, Stafford, Texas. It will begin at 1 :00 p.m. The parents are invited to at­ tend and stay for the meeting. Lunch will be served.

After the meeting, we will go to Fame City. The parents will chaperone our trip. Maps will be sent to all youth club members.

Our November meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Hallettsville Youth Center on November 3rd.

The District VI fall meeting will be in Ganado and it will start at 11 :00 a.m. instead of 1:00 p.m. We will be performing at this meeting, so start practicing your skits or songs. More details will be available at the Novem­ ber 3 meeting.

Lodge 66, Waco Youth Discuss Business Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held September 15, 1991. We had one visitor Kellie Powell. Michael Tierce was our new member.

Under old business, we discussed the fun day at Seaton on September 21, 1991 at 10:00. We also discussed our booth for SPJST Czech Fraternal Fest on September 22nd. We are selling Rice Krispy squares, brownies, cookies and grab bags. Plans were made to meet and finish our bluebon­ nets on Monday, September 16; these bluebonnets would also be sold in our booth.

Under new business, the Vestnik project should be mailed back 30 days from publication. We will sell M&M candy for our annual money-making project from the district. We also voted to keep our highway cleanup for two more years.

Blrmortnm Expression of Sympathy

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 47, Seaton on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our dear departed brother W.E. (BILL) KOSAREK, 79, of Canyon Lake and formerly of Temple, who died Wednesday, August 14, 1991 in a New Braunfels hospital.

Brother Kosarek was a contract specialist in the Department of Agriculture for 26 years, until retire­ ment. He was a member of VFW Post 5573 in Sattler and a member of SPJST almost 54 years, first at Lodge 87 in Temple and later transferred to Seaton Lodge 47 where he and his wife were active for many years and also in the Seaton Choral Group, until they moved to the residence in Canyon Lake.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph E. Motal of Victoria. The groom is the son of Mrs. Verle Hill of Houston, Texas and Mr. David Hill of Tenafly, New Jersey.

The church setting was decorated with white gladiolas and white roses, and candelabras on each side of the altar, with palm trees in the back of the altar.

Organist was Mrs. Stephen Fuhrman, accompanied soloist was Allan Menefee and guitarist was Mike Rip­ pamonti. The selections were Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Wedding Song, Doubly Good To You, Household of Faith, I Will Be There, Canon in D. Given in marriage by her father, the bride selected a formal gown of white satin and Venetian lace with schiffli embroidery. The gown had a Sabrina neckline top and fitted bodice with full pouf renaissance sleeves ending at points on the fingertips. Her entire bodice was encrusted with hand-sewn bridal pearls which dropped to a basque waistline, with a ballgown skirt that drifted into a chapel-length train.

Venetian lace rose medallions adorned the back skirt.

The bride' s headdress was a wreath of Venetian lace and schiffli embroidery which extended into a delicate pouf, with illusion sprinkled with pearls, cascading to the waist.

The Weatherford All-Star Pee Wees recently played in the Jim Sundberg tournament in Fort Worth. They won one, lost two. But all came away feeling like winners - especially one boy.

Jason Murley has Hodgkins disease.

Yet, it hasn't stopped him from playing baseball. He played for the Pee Wee Yankees while undergoing chemotherapy and earned a spot on the All-Star team.

While his All-Star teammates won their first game, 10-7 over Arlington Central, and lost their second game 9-8 to Sabine Jarvis, Murley was unable to be with them. · But he was with them Wednesday as they lost 18-1 to Western Hills. But it wasn't the score that was important.

Závěrem mého eulogického spisu k uctění velkého Moravana Ant. C. Sto­ jana přikládám článek "O jednom zlatém srdci," sepsaný Ant. Šuránkem" k památce A.C. Stojana.

"Tento článek byl vytištěn v dnes již neexistující tiskárně českých benediktínů v Chicagu pro rovněž již zaniklý každoroční kalendář Národ z roku 1969. Věřím, že Šuránkův spis je velmi vhodnou přílohou mého článku "Antonín Cyril Stojan, metropolita moravský (1851-1923).

--Celý článek Antonína Šuránka je citován doslova>- V ňadrech jednoho člověka tlouklo zlaté srdce. Nikdo sice toho srdce neviděl, ale cítil, slyšel je; prozařovalo na venek a svítilo jasně vzácnými skutky. Jinak by nikdo netušil, že tento prostinký muž má v nitru takový poklad. Hřmotný, obhroublý venkovský farář ve zmačkaném, černémšosáku, utírající si tváře obrovským červeným kapesníkem, v kapsách vždyckytrochu toho Božího živobytí, kus špeku, hlt slivovičky, nějaké jablko, s odřeným kufříkem a tlustou cestovnípokrývkou -- vlňákem -- tak jezdil ten člověk léta po světě, hlavně do Vídně, kde poslan­ coval. Mandát mu byl prostředkem k dobročinění. Říkával, že poslanec je omnibus, na němž se svést má každý právo. A on jich svezl mnoho a mnoho. Chodil obětavě mezi lid, přítel opuštěných, sbíral jejich prosby, slzyosušoval, bídu mírnil, vodil deputace do sněmovny jako vodil procesí na Velehrad nebo na Hostýn, přesvědčivouřečí vlumočilje­ jich přání -- žebrák, jemuž nebylo lze nic odepřít, neboť každý viděl do jeho prosté duše jako do čisté horské studánky a nenašel v ní temného záhybu. On neznal falše, neznal nenávisti. Dobrý, nezištný a vzorný člověk, zářný příklad účinné bratrské lásky. Všecky k úctě nutila jeho velká víra -- skutky ji vyznávaly. Miloval bližního, jehož viděl, byl schopen vroucně milovati Boha, jehož nemůže viděti smrtelník. On, blahoslavený čistého srdce, byl Bohu blíž -- a v jeho náruč stále schovával své zlaté srdce -­ žil prostým, chudičkým životem bez větších nároků, na sebe zapomínal objímaje činorodou láskou všeckylidi, děti Boží, bez rozdílu vyznání, národ­ nosti, rasy. Měl jednu vášeň: rozdat se po kouscích a na ráz, rozsívat dobro.

Byl přítelem chudiny. Rozdal, co měl, a kdyby ho byl na ulici mrznoucí o kožich požádal, byl by jej svlékl a dal.

Neměl nikdy nic jiného na mysli, než býti lidem užitečným,dělatijim radost, těšiti je. Nedošel vždy vděku, ale zlaté srdce odpouští a miluje tím vroucněji;

23. řijna 1991 když stranická zavilost nešetrně trhala jeho čest, nedal se strhnout k protiútoku. Říkával: "Škodit může každý každému. Hlavní věc je pomoci člověku. A mnohdy potřebuje nejvíc pomoci ten, na kom to je nejméně vidět."

A pomáhal dále, dával sám nebo prosil u mocných tohoto světa. "Pán Bůh vám to odplatí," říkával s parlamentní tribuny, když se odhlasoval zákon, na němž mu záleželo;a nikomu to neznělo směšně, protože se vědělo, že také on dělá všecko za tu Boží odplatu ---."

Ten člověk neměl nepřátel. Odzbro­ joval je dobrotou. Kouzlo jeho osob­ nosti prozařovalo všecky pochybnosti a námitky. Jeho prostota a upřímná pokora srážela na kolena. Nebál se nikoho. Neposkvrnil svého štítu, neuchýlil se k postranním zbraním, vystupoval vždycky zcela otevřeně, mluvil tím zlatým srdcem svým a pod­ maňoval srdce kamenná. A každé zachvění srdce: laskavé slovíčko a každé tepnutí rozkošná perlička. Slyšte a vizte!

Bylo to v červenci, rok po první světové válce. Veliké průtrže mračen způsobily, že řeka Morava a její přítoky valily do kraje spousty kalných vod, zaplavily pole, trhaly mosty a železniční hráze. Moravské Slovácko trpělo. Jeli jsme, vojáci, velitelbrigády a já, jeho pobočník, autem po blátivé silnici z Uh. Hradiště. Hořko v duši.

Tolik škod kolem, tolik utrápených tváří jindy veselých mroavských Slováků ---. Jedeme vesnicí. Z auta jsem zahlédl zavalitého, černě oděného muže. Seděl na hromádce kamení u silnice; že bylo k polednímu a slunce pražilo, utíral si pot z čela. U něho stáli tři venkované a rozmlouvali.

"Pane plukovníku," pravím, "zdá se mi, že je to poslanec Stojan, zjišťuje asi škody ve svém volebním okrese.

Nemohli bychom ho pozvat do auta?

Má rád vojáky. Chodili k němu za války' "od hromobití a bouře vojenské, vysvoboď nás Pane!"

Poobědval by možná s námi.

"Máš pravdu. Slyšel jsem o tom člověku už celé dějiny. Nedávno zvečera jsem potkal v Kroměříži houf otrhaných vojáků. Jedli veselehrušky.

Jářku: kde jste to ukradli? Neukradli jsme, natrhali poctivě ve Stojanově zahradě. Zavedl nás tam sám pan pro­ bošt! -- Nevěřil jsem. Přesvědčovali mne: Potkali jsme staršího kněze. Ptal se: Jak se máte, co jste večeřeli?

Nelhalijsme: černou bryndu. On na to: znám ji, znám. Pil jsem ji také v Bosně. Pojďte, hosl, za mnou, co mám, to dám. Zavedl nás do zahrady na hrušky. Ovoce je moje, pravil, natrhejte sobě i kamarádů, větve mi nepatří, ať jich nezlomíte. A přijděte někdy zase! -- Musil jsem uvěřit." Šofér už se točil a mířil ke skupině u hromádky šíter ku.

Byl to Stojan. Představujeme se z nabízíme auto.

Pořád cosi máte proti vojákům a kdyby nebylojich, zůstal bych vám tu na krku ---. Loučil se srdečně s každým, koho jsme potkali cestou.

Před městskýmzámkem čekal velitel brigády s důstojnickým štábem. Stojan zesmutněl. Neměl co rozdávat.

Zpřevracel kapsy -- a našel přece několik cigaret. "No, a teď jsem čistý jako oficír poslední den před gáží" žer­ toval -- a napsal si do notýsku přání dvou kamarádů, kteří použili vhodné příležitosti -- (Vzpomíná voják.)

Už r. 1880 -- za velké povodně na Rožnovsku -- šel jsem jako mladý právník pěšky z Rožnova pod Radhoštěm do Brodku u Přerova. Se mnou cestoval kolega -- filosof. Měli jsme celkem 14 krejcarů, a ty jsme-pro­ jedli a propili ještě na Radhošti -- v chlebě a mléce. Cestou nám přálo štěstí. Ve Frenštátě jsme byli pohoštěni u přítele a vyrazilijsme k Příboru. Tam bylo hůř. Peněz nebylo. Mělijsme tam přítele, ale ten byl tak chudý jak my.

Poradil nám: Je tady v Příboru panáček, veliké dobrotisko a přítel studentů. Založil české gymnásium a internát pro studenty -- sám tam bydlí také. Ten vám jistě dá něco na cestu.

Vpadli jsme k panáčkovi. Přivítal nás mile; vyptal se, odkud jsme, co jsme a když jsme prosili o něco na cestu, škrábal se rozpačitě, hledal ve všech kapsách -- až vylovil stříbrnou zlatku. Omlouval se, že víc nemá. Nám zářily obličeje; slíbili jsme, že zlatku brzy vrátíme a čářili k Jičínu. Když jsme promoklí přišli domů -­ vzpomínali jsme dlouho na cestu, ale na zlatku jsme jaksi zapoměli. A tu zlatku dlužím příborskému panáčkovi dodnes. Nechtěl jsem ho později, už · jako advokát, . připravit o radost, že je mu také někdo něco dlužen. -- On vždycky říkával, žemá moc dluhů, ale žádného dlužníka. -- Příběh jsem mu později jako poslanci a proboštovi za velikého veselívypravoval. Bylo to na Popelečnou středu. Ar­ cibiskup Stojan seděl v metropolitním chrámě na trůně a uděloval popelec: kněžím a zástupu věřících: "Pomni, člověče, že prach jsi a v prach. se obrátíš." Když byl obřad ukončen, vzali dva bohoslovci bílou roušku, kterou měl arcibiskup na kolenou, aby nepadal . popel na zem a na bohoslužebná roucha. Stojan si umyl ruce a chystal se k oltáři. Vtom zhlídne malého chlapečka, jak se pomalu, stydlivě blíží ještě k trůnu. -- Ar­ cibiskup se vrací, sedá si znovu, roušku rozkládá, na chlapce šeptem volá: "Pojď sem, chlapečku, a i ty kdysi

zemřeš." Chlapec přiběhl, stříbrovlasý stařeček nad hrobem nabral popela a poznačuje ten nadějný pupen budouc­ nosti, minulost takřka upozorňuje budoucnosti: "Pomni, člověče, že prach jsi a v prach se obrátíš!"

Chlapec doklekl, odešel, arcibiskup se díval s láskou za ním, umývaje si ruce.

Do roka vydechl naposledy.

Kdo má právo mluvit za Moravu a Slezsko?

PRVNÍ MÍSTROPŘEDSEDA HSD -­ SMS ing. Josef CUNDA se v těchto dnech obrátil na předsedkyni české národní rady dr. Dagmar Burešovou a reagoval tak na její nedávné vystoupení ve věci postavení Moravy a Slezskav rámci ČSFR. Dopis uvádíme v plném znění.

Vážená paní předsedkyně, stále se opakuje situace, že čelní politici, zejménav ČNR, bez ohledu na skutečnosti tvrdošíjně prohlašují nes­ jednocený názor občanů Moravy a Slezska na zemské uspořádání.

V uplynulém roce jsme výrazně dokumentovali akci Petic, k jejímuž sečtení, jak jsme informováni, se ještě ČNR nedostala. Občané země Morav­ skoslezské zde jednoznačně vyjadřují svéstanovisko k samostatnosti Moravy a Slezska jako nezávislého státního subjektu. Kromě toho HSD -- SMS a ostatní strany a hnutí, které mají moravskoslezskouotázku ve svémpro­ gram u, vyjádřily na různých manifestacích nezvratnou vůli žít v samostatném a rovnoprávném útvaru zemi (republice) Moravskoslezské.

K Vašemu prohlášení, paní předsedkyně, zaujímáme jednoznačné stanovisko: Upusťte, prosím, konečně od tendenčních, nepodložených projevů, kterými vědomě ovlivňujete a zavádíte myšlení občanů našeho státu. Nikdo jiný, jako Vy, doposud neměl a nemá takové možnosti k tomu, abyste se přesvědčilao správnosti nebo nespráv­ nosti svých postojů.

Aniž kdokolivjakýmkoliv způsobem organizoval občany Moravy a Slezska, nebo je informoval o možnosti přihlášení se k té které národnosti, učinilo tak víc než 1 mil. 400 tisíc občanů Moravy a Slezskapři letošním sčítání lidu.

Je nabíledni, že kdyby tato infor­ mace o takové možnosti byla ohlášena včas, bylo by toto číslopodstatně vyšší.

Není pravda, že existuje rozpor mezi jižní a severní Moravou v nazírání na samostatnost, nebo utváření tro­ jfederativního státu. Jde pouze o různé nazírání na sociální politiku, prováděnou oběma parlamenty a vládami, což je pochopitelně dáno specifikou jednotlivých regionů na Moravě. Toto však naprosto nesouvisí s tím, že několik desítek tisíc občanů Moravy a Slezska dezorientovaných Vaší sociální a hospodářskou politikou dává v posloupnossti přednost jejímu řešení před zásadním problémem státoprávního uspořádání. Žádáme, aby nejvyšší orgány pro-

vedly revizi svých dosavadních zamítavých postojů k přáním našeho lidu a nevkládali nám uměle myšlenky, které na Moravě a ve Slezsku nemají místa u většiny občanů. Pouze ref eren­ dum zodpovědně ukáže, jakým způsobem má býti řešena v CSFR otázka postavení jejich částí, tj. Cech, Moravy se Slezkem a Slovenska. Že tomu tak je, bylo vidět i při jednáních v Kroměříži, kdy k prezidentově otázce na postavení Moravy se Slezskem zau­ jala polovina přítomných jednoznačné stanovisko pro trojfederaci.

REDAKCNÍ POZNÁMKA K DOPISU 1. MJSTOPŘEDSEDY HSD -SMS ING. JOSEFA CUN­ DY:Dopis je reakcí na tiskovou besedu před posledním plénem CNR, kde její předsedkyně D. Burešová k otázce Moravy a Slezska prohlásila: "Myslím, že problém není ani tak ve vztahu Cech s Moravou, jako spíše jde o konflikt severní Moravy s jižní. Sever Moravy totiž uvažuje o regionálním uspořádání, kdežto jižní Morava chce zem Mroavskoslezskou na úrovni postavení republiky."

K tomu redakce Moravskoslezské orlice uvádí: Upozorňujeme, že myšlenka regionálního zřízení je preferována pouze několika starosty a primátory, např, z Ostravy a Olomouce, zatím co ostatní prosazují spíše variantu odlišnou. Zásadně nepřípustná pro nás je ovšem koncepce tzv. země Ostravsko-slezské, "Byl by to umělý útvar, bez vazby na identitu občana.

Navíc tato varianta si osobuje právo zabrat část moravského okresu Nový Jičín a Frýdek-Místek. S tím by nikdo ze zdejších obyvatel nesouhlasil." řekl nám v této souvislostsi poslanec CNR ing. Jaromír Kapusta. Zdá se, že v této situaci by bylo skutečně nejvhodnější uskutečnění referenda, jehož se mnozí politici tak podezřele obávají. Ostatně tato obava vyplynula i ze slov premiéra Calfy při nedávném setkání s občany Hodonína, jak jsme o tom psali v minulém čísle našeho týdeníku.

Břeclavské sčítání JAKO KAŽDÝ JINÝ, byl jsem i já velmi zvědav na výsledky letošního sčítání lidu. A jako Moravana mne předevšímzajímalo, kolik lidí se u nás přihlásilo k moravské národnosti.

Připomněl jsem si sčítání lidu, které jsem prožil ve své rodné obci jako chlapec po první světové válce. Tehdy sčítací komisaři poučili naše tatíky, že

neexistuje žádná moravská národnost (ani chorvatská, jak uvedli ve sčítacích listinách potomci ~ bývalých chorvatských přistěhovalců) a po přeškrtnutí zápisu napsali u všech národnost českou. Musel jsem myslet na to, že něco podobného se dělo i letos, a proto s těmi více než osmi pro­ centy jsem docela spokojen. Zatím tedy 1 360 155 lidí si uvědomuje svou moravskou národnost a dá Bůh, že, při příštím sčítání jich bude daleko víc.

Velkou radost mám z výsledků v břeclavském okrese, kde z počtu 124 452 se přihlásilo k české národnosti 47 ls78 osob (38,7 procenta), ke slovenské národnosti 492 (2,8 procenta) a k moravské národnosti 71 871s osob (47,7 procenta). O tento nečekaný, ale velmi radosstný výsledek se nepochybně zasloužila i okresní organizace -- Společnostpro Moravu a Slezsko.
