Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 - December 25, 1991

1992-1993 SPJST Scholarship Applications

The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting Oc­ tober 1, 1991 through December 25, 1991.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge is accepting applications for scholarships until December 31, 1991. Please specify if you are applying for the regular scholar­ ship (4 year colleges), or a TSTC scholarship (Texas State Technical Colleges).

If you apply for a TSTC scholarship you must attend the TSTC. The TSTC scholarship will not apply to any other business college.

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

A donation of $1.00 per member is suggested for this drive. Any donation amount would certainly be appreciated to help defray the cost of higher educa­ tion.

District VII Spring Meeting The District VII spring meeting was held on April 28, 1991 hosted by Lodge No. 31, Yoakum. Colors were presented by the youth of Lodge No. 31. Sister Lee welcomed the members and guests to the meeting.

Brother Ernest Jasek, treasurer, made his report. Roll call of lodges revealed the following represented: No. 31, No. 79, No. 107, No. 117, No. 133, No. 137, No. 161 and No. 185.

Sister Viola Cabla introduced SL Vice President Gebala; District VII Director Sister Thelma Hrncir, Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir; also guests, Donnie and Jan Granger and Evelyn Lehart. She also read the names of the eleven 50-year members.

The following were nominated on the nominating committee: Anthony Trilicek (133), Juanita Rico (3Í) and Tillie Koch (161).

Sister Hrncir recognized the follow­ ing special people: Fratemalists of the Year, namely: Brother Jerry Elzner (79), Sister Pauline Pavliska (107), Sister Mary Hanus (26), Brother Emil Matula (133). Sister Tillie Koch is Fraternalist of District VII. Vice President of SL, Brother Gabala, presented the treasurer the fol­ lowing checks: District Treasury -­ $250.00 and Youth Fund -- $1,253.50.

Sister Thelma Hrncir reported that big insurance companies are going under. Executive Life in California sold large insurance policies; senior citizens got taken by investing in junk bonds. A contest will be held in Dis­ ťrict VII in selling the most insurance (May I-31st); a member of Lodge No. 26, Skidmore is attending training class at Supreme Lodge today (28th); the delegate count will be sent to all lodges October l st; also that there will be 100 percent family campaign; Mr. and Miss SPJST will be at the conven­ tion, the competition will be held at the spring meeting.

Sister Maxine Pavliska, youth coun­ selor, gave the following report: Youth Leader's Retreat will be at Camp Tejas near Giddings; attended Longhorn Lab; the youth leader's training class of District VII will be held May 7th at her home; District VII Queen and King, Jackie Burleson (107) and Char­ les Majek (79) were invited to May Fest; District VII YAD will be hosted

by Lodge No. 133, San Antonio on July 7th; District V and VII will be

camping at Val Verde from July 27 through 30; LIT Retreat will be held in in June also at Camp Val Verde; State Royalty and YAD will be held August 17th and 18th.

Rest Homes Director Eugene Hrncir reported that the administrator at Rest Home No. I retired and a new ad­ ministrator is Woody Richards -- 9 months; District III Rest Homes Direc­ tor Brother Sid Pokladnik retired after 30 years of service; both rest homes are fully occupied; also minor repairs are needed at Rest Home No. I in Taylor; the next board meeting is Oc­ tober 10th in Needville; the homes are · inspected often.

Reports were given by the following committee members: Finance -- Monta Foster Publication -- Betty Jurica By-Law -- Dominic Netek (not present) Audit Committee Report -- Chairman Viola Kurtz reported that the treasurer's books were in order; dis­ trict youth counselor's book has an

$18.53 discrepancy. (Maxine Pavliska stated that the bank lost checks, ex­ planation at next meeting). Both reports were accepted.

Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge No. 1 met on Sunday, September 15 at the SPJST Hall for their quarterly meet­ ing.

Everyone was delighted to see that the hall has been repainted and dis­ playing a new sign. Renovation of the hall and its preservation means so much to the Fayetteville community not only because of its historic value, but that these facilities are available for so many activities.

A business meeting was held fol­ lowed by entertainment provided by Alvin Minarcik and Rose Rohde.

Alvin really surprised everyone as he has just recently learned to play the ac­ cordian adding to the list of musical instruments he plays. Rose, daughter of the late John Baca who had the Baca Band, played the piano in her father's band and still continues to play the piano and keyboard with her husband's band, "The Jim Rohde Band." Needless to say, everyone en­ joyed the music along with the deli­ cious desserts which everyone brought!

Fayetteville's Lickskillet event is scheduled for October 19th and 20th.

The Fayetteville School reunion will be at te SPJST Hall from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. as well as the barbecue and bean cookoff, horseshoe and washer throw­ ing, and volleyball tournament throughout the day. Arts and crafts booths will be on the square, both Saturday and Sunday. There will be a parade on Sunday, which starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by Herbert's catered old-fashioned pit barbecue beef and pork lunch at 11:30 a.m. The auction starts at 1:30 p.m.; music throughout the day by the Jimmy Rohde Band. This is an excellent time to take walking tours of historic Fayet­ teville and tour the school museum and museum on the square. The proceeds will be used for community activities and further development of thé SPJST Hall and Park.

Our next meeting and Christmas Party are scheduled for December l, 1991 at 2:30 p.m. in the SPJST Hall.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers: President Johnnie Krizan presided at the meeting. Sharon Hrabal and Tammi Dobecka led the pledge to the United States flag.

President Krizan asked the member­ ship to stand in silent respect for departed Sister Josie Mae Straten while he read the following tribute to her: "August 11th of this year, a great emptiness filled our lives in the pass­ ing of Josie Mae Straten. Our words will never be adequate to describe the loss felt by, not only her family, but the membership of SPJST Lodge No.

We were all very saddened to hear about the untimely and sudden death of our fellow lodge worker. We may never understand why and that may be as it should be for we should only put our faith in God and realize that only he knows best.

For Josie Mae, we honor her memory here today, for she was truly dedicated· to her role here at SPJST Lodge No. 6.

I believe she really enjoyed what she was doing for us here at the lodge.

Let us mention that she was really good at what she did. She took care of our bookings for years, organized our inventory well and gave from her heart many timeless hours of work to our lodge.

The entire membership will truly miss this individual and our deep sym­ pathy and comfort go out to her fami­ ly. I trust that the lodge will always remember all her devotion to us and that at some time in the near future, the membership will honor her memory in some fitting way."

We have two new members trans­ ferred into our lodge; they are Willie Mae and John Sulak. Welcome.

Vice President Robert Dobecka thanked everyone who helped him put the booth up at Westfest and Eddie Ray Hrabal for using his pots to cook sausage. We will decide on a Frater­ nalist of the Year. There will be a Tarok Tournament at the District III meeting; they will also have a quilt contest and a needlework contest. Vice President Dobecka thanked everyone for working at Westfest.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz reported they took cakes to. the rest home on August 7th and, again, on October 2nd. They baked kolaches during the month. At State YAD, we had 2 first place winners - Keith Hykel in Con­ structed Items and Celia Dobecka in Foods. Tammi Dobecka and Sharon Hrabal entered but did not win. At Westfest, Keith Hykel and Sister Wil­ lie Mae Schuetz entered the kolache contest; Keith won first place on his sausage and third place in fruit, Sister Schuetz won third place on sausage.

The youth won third place on their float in Westfest Parade. They had a booth and then cleaned up on Septem­ ber 2nd. Sister Schuetz thanked everyone who helped. On September 29th, they are going to Six Flags.

Sister Schuetz received a letter from the new State Youth Director Joni Lange. The youth will have an orna­ ment contest at the District III meet­ ing.

Sister Schuetz sent a sympathy card to Brother George Straten and family.

President Krizan presented checks to the following youth: Keith Hykel, Sharon Hrabal, Celia Dobecka, Susan Hrabal, Samantha Hrabal, Kevin Dobecka and Tammi Dobecka.

The trustees decided we need to make wheelchair facilities for our hall and they are going to install a large sink in the kitchen. For our apprecia­ tion dinner, we will go out to eat. They donated to Penelope Picnic, Tours Pic­ nic, St. Paul Bazaar, and Chalk Bluff Fire Department.

Our next meeting will be October 4 with a meal before the meeting. Presi­ dent Krizan thanked Lydia and Robert Dobecka for preparing food and everyone who brought food. He also thanked everyone who worked and set up for Westfest.

Sister Lydia Dobecka thanked Hattie Kaska and she also donated pears.

Vice President Robert Dobecka thanked Edward Hykel for working on the sewer line, and Lydia Dobecka for painting the booth.

Brother Bill Skerik moved that we do something in memory of Josie Mae Straten. This was postponed to our next meeting.

Lodge No. 35, Elk SP JST Sept. 8, 1991 Meeting President Henry Breitkreutz .brought our meeting to order.

The pledge was led by Jana Breitkreutz.

Minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

Verna Pavelka gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney paid back Lodge No. 35 for our part on the bus we took to Six Flags in July. She also reported on the events of the Westfest, that our float of which the theme was "Save the Earth" won first place in the parade and, following the parade, we had a pizza party and then went to the Wes tfest where some of

our youth went to work in our game booths we had for the weekend. Louise thanked everyone who worked in the booth and a special thanks to the stores who donated to our float. Thank you Appletree, Wal-Mart and Target, all in Bellmead. We held a cake walk at the Pavelka reunion on September 1st at Elk Hall. Checks were presented to all the participants in YAD from the mother lodge and a picture was taken of everyone and Brandy McFarland's cookie, that won first place at State YAD. was shown and enjoyed by everyone. It was very good. She reminded everyone of the Youth Fes­ tival (Seaton) and Fraternal Fest (Bel­ ton) on September 21st and 22nd. At the Czech Fr.aternal Fest, we would sell beaded items at our booth in the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.

She told the youth they needed to make the Christmas ornaments for the District III meeting corning up.

Mo­ tion was made by Richard Burney to combine the meetings and it was seconded by Vernon Wood. Motion carried. Also Lodge No. 35 and RVOS would go in halves on a keg for the meeting. Motion was made by Louise Burney to do so on the keg and seconded by Freddie Kubitza. Motion carried and Johnny Stuckley would take care of getting it.

Lodge No. 51, Ellinger Dinner On Sunday, September 15, 1991 Lodge No. 51 of Ellinger held their lodge dinner at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall. We were happy to have a good attendance. Mrs. F.R. Hruska was in charge of registering those in attendance. Fifty-three mem­ bers and twenty-five guests - making a total of ·seventy-eight persons were present for the dinner.

The happy hour was held at 12:00 noon. At 12:30 p.rn., a delicious bar­ becued chicken meal with all the trim­ mings was served. Mrs. Alton Koehl asked the Blessing. John Mikulenka and John C. Divin were in charge of preparing the meal.

After the meal was served, a meeting was held at which time President Lud­ wig Kocian called the meeting to order. John Mikulenka, secretary­ treasurer, gave his reports which were approved.

Houston Ballroom Promoter Passes Quarter Century Mark

By Wanda Hegna "Dancing USA" In the 25 years of being entertain­ ment director for the Chandelier Ballroom in Houston, Texas, Harley Cox has booked some big name per­ formers.

According to his wife, Viola, Harley, age 75, has big bands calling and as­ king to play at the Chandelier. The ballroom is centered in the SPJST Lodge 88, a fraternal organization.

Named after the European chandelier inside, the ballroom has room for 550 people and has an oak dance floor.

Some of the orchestras that Cox has booked include Wayne King, Guy Lombardo, Glenn Miller, Woody Her­ man, Harry James, Sammy Kaye, Jan

Garber, Jack Morgan, Tommy Dorsey, Al Pierson, Bobby Layne, Jack Melick; Eddie Skeets, Manny Green, John Sullivan and many more.

Harley Cox books bands two years in advance so he can get who he wants when he wants them. He is now work­ ing on his 1993 schedule. "People have been real nice to work with and I've enjoyed it," he added.

A big band plays every weekend.

"When people who love to dance find a nice place, you know they will make an effort to get there," said Viola Cox. For New Year's Eve Harley said he alternates each year between polka and big band. "You can't keep everybody happy, but we try," said Harley. This year its polka. The Cox's can be con­ tacted at 713/682-2402.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth News Dear Members and Friends: I suppose as one gets older the time seems to go by faster or somethings never slow down. It seems only yester­ day I wrote a letter to the Vestnik and now, again. I suppose Brother Sefcik thinks I know a lot; of course, all meetings are about the same so one has to think up something which may be of interest to the readers.

The September 8, 1991 monthly meeting was well attended. I'm sure many of the attendees wanted to help with our celebration on September 14th. They volunteered to help in some way or other which was only a few days before our Czech Heritage Celebration.

However, everything

seemed to be in order and we were ex­ pecting all of our fine fraternal brothers and sisters to attend and bring their friends for a day of friendship.

We remodeled our ladies restroom and it is very nice. I'm sure the ladies will enjoy having it redone. We added the handicapped facilities to keep-up with the laws that require this in public places. We like to help our members who may be handicapped; the ramp is a big help and many use it now.

Our youth club participated at State YAD and were happy to place in dif­ ferent categories; Paxton Davies won first place in 6 to 9 Construction Items, Melissa Hubenak won third place in 12 to 13 Pictorial Arts and first place in Special Category.

Mrs. Jerry Belger was a visitor who is the great-great-grandmother of one of our youth club members, Barron Corneilson.

I have some bad news about Emil Milan who had a severe heart condi­ tion while being out-of-state where they were having a slet. We hope he is feeling better; maybe Mary Pavey will have more on this subject in her letter.

We send our congratulations to Retired Commander James and his wife who were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on September 1 O in Coca Beach, Florida. James is the brother of Esta Belle Hubenak and Beulah La Bate. We wish both of them many more happy years of married life.

Birthday cards were sent to members over age 65 and to some who are not too well; Lisa Dearing had an appen­ dix surgery and is doing fine now, Sister Annie Langer had a bad spell and had to return to the hopsital, again, however, as of now, she is back in a nursing home at Weatherford, Texas.

Our game nights are doing real good but we could use some players for the other games. The Taroks seem to be more of a change. We play games from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., and there is plenty room for new players.

If you would like to sing Czech songs, the Memory Makers sing also the same nights and there is additional room for a few more singers. This group sings very well.

Sister Frances Tirk has celebrated her 91st birthday. Lydia and Frances

visit her every day. They are Mrs. Tirk's daughters and she also has one son, Joe. They had a birthday party for their mother with a delicious cake.

To finish my letter, our Czech Heritage Day has come and gone what a turnout we had for this day!

The dinner was catered by Risky Bar­ becue with. all the trimmings. Helen Kubala made some sauerkraut with dumplings and that disappeared fast.

The Ladies Circle had plenty of pastries and had a peanut candy money-making project.

Then the Choral Group from Dallas KJT sang several beautiful Czech songs. We thank all of you who sang.

I'm sorry - all names cannot be listed.

Then the accordian contest followed with several entries; some of the win­ ners were Mike Becan, Leroy Bates and Johnny Divin.

Approximately 2:00 p.m., the Mikula Band from Ennis played until 6:00 p.m. Later on the small children had their parade of costumes. The judges selected the following entrants: l st. Kerein Ussery, 2nd-Lindsay Lin­ cecum, 3rd-Jennifer Aston. The adult costumes winners consisted of: 1st-­ special winner; 1st place-Lillie and Al Mobley; 2nd-Johnny and Lil Dur Divin, 3rd-Bill and Bea Adami.

The Memory Makers sang a few Czech songs that were very nice, but the sound system didn't work too well so it was difficult to hear them sing.

Then came time for the Ukrainian dancers to put on their show. It was something to see; if, you have · a chance to see them dance some place else, make an effort to see them per­ form.

Our youth club sang a nice song, "We Are The Children Of Tomorrow."

Our District III Queen Holly Hubenak and Duchess Melissa Hubenak made an appearance in their pretty dresses.

At 8:00 p.m., the Texas Dutchmen from Houston started playing and the dance floor was packed with young and old enjoyable dancers. Both bands played very good music.

Attention: Lodge 107, Floresville Members Remember, at our lodge meeting, plans were made for all the activities and how many peanuts of different kinds we should prepare for our booth at the Peanut Festival.

Lodge 107 plans to sell hot roasted peanuts, salted peanuts, hot (pepper) peanuts, sugared peanuts, peanut brit­ tle, boiled peanuts and peanuts in the shell. A big day is planned with the youth club assisting.

We will be cooking sugared peanuts and peanut brittle on Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th; both days, we will start at 10:00 a.m. and work until our quota is filled.

PLEASE, all Lodge 107 members, come out and help because we need many workers to make a big job a little lighter.

Lodge No. 155, Austin Reports The meeting of August 4, 1991 was held at Faith Community Church on Peyton Gin Road off Research Blvd. at 2: 10 p.m. by President Clarence Boris­ ki presiding.

Brother Charles Sponberg led the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag.

The roll call of officers by President Boriski indicated all were present.

Faye Mares' sister, Celeste Fowler Gustafson, died after a long illness in July at the age of 80 years in Lockhart.

Her husband, Herman, preceded her in death in 1964. Members of SPJST Lodge No. 155 share Faye's sorrow with deepest sympathy.

The president gave the total of frater­ nal activities accumulated in 1990 and sent by local lodges into the Supreme Lodge office of the SPJST. Even more charitable acts should be reported by members.

Correspondence and notices of future events received in the mail by Secretary Raymond Prasatik were read and discussed.

Treasurer John Hejl gave his report.

The next meeting will be held Sun­ day, October 6, 1991 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Community Church. Clarence and Mina Sponberg volunteered to bring cake and coffee. .

From The District Youth Counselors District IV Camp

District IV had 27 campers and chaperones from the Rowena Lodge 49 and San Angelo Lodge 160 Youth Clubs attend camp this year; of those, IO were attending SPJST Camp for the first time! Upon returning home, after 4 days of fun and adventure, all 27 were marking their calendar to attend again next year! In taking a survey from those attending camp - vol­ leyball, swimming, and outdoor games were the biggest hits. About the only negative comments made were about the food and the cold showers. But with the 100-degree temperature, the cold showers didn't seem to feel too bad.

Campers and chaperones arrived at Camp Paluxy on July 22nd. For the next 2 days they enjoyed archery, 'swimming, volleyball, pool, table ten­ nis. air hockey, shuffleboard, croquet, miniature golf, tetherball, irampoline and basketball. They all :-,articipated in a session of outdoor games. The "banana eating" game was definitely the funniest! Each camper learned to make a wreath. They all turned out so pretty and no two were exactly alike.

They also learned to make a bluebon­ net using the plastic rings from canned drinks. Since ice cream making using the coffee cans was such a big hit at camp last year, we decided to do it again this year. This time we made strawberry and orange sherbert in­ stead. Really tasted good during the hot afternoon.

The first night included a hot dog cookout and eating outside on the pic­ nic tables. This was followed with making and devouring some s'mores.

We concluded the night with watching the movie "White Fang" in the air-con­ ditioned movie house at the camp.

The second night included another exciting hayride. Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met Sep­ tember 12th at the Sokol Athletic Cen­ ter. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Everyone was happy to see Sister Mary Vrla, who has been absent for quite some time. Our visitors were Lillie Kosarek, Jerry Kohn and Joe Vlk. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a mo­ ment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Millie Vytopil and Julia Pustejovsky, sister of Sister Louise Vlacilek, Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes. They were approved as read.

In the absence of Treasurer Mildred Trojacek, the financial report was given by Sister Emilie Harrison. It was approved as read. A birthday card was sent to Sister Hattie Lekar.

A thank you was received from the family of Sister Millie Vytopil for the plant, from Sister Ann Zabojnik for the get well card and money gift, from Sister Hattie Moucka for the get well card and money gift, prayers, cards and special thoughts. Hattie had surgery. She was able to attend the meeting. Sincere sympathy is extended to Sister Louise Vlacilek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the September celebrants. A quilt was quilted for Sister Hattie Moucka.

But we will definitely get it worked into the schedule next year. · On Wednesday we bid Camp Paluxy farewell and headed to Abilene. After a McDonald's lunch in Abilene, we went on a tour of the Abilene Zoo. Everyone really enjoyed the animals especially getting the lions to roar at one another. We had planned to take a tour of Buffalo Gap after the zoo, but a heavy rainstorm depleted these plans.

Instead, we checked into the Kiva Inn which has a holidome. The youth thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub, ping

Youth Leaders Robstown Lodge 117 Youth Club Activities Dear Readers, Just a few lines on the activities of Lodge No. 117, Robstown. The club is small in membership, but we stay ac­ tive as always. The members par­ ticipated in many charity projects.

Eastertíme, we make and fill 65 bas­ kets for Westwood Manor Nursing Home, also take cakes on all holidays, collect clothing for women' s shelter, and school supplies for Department of Human Services.

Our next projects will be food bas­ ket, Christmas gifts and cakes. We are collecting Campbell's Soup labels for Dos Mundos.

The youth attended District VU YAD on July 7th in San Antonio. Erika Lan­ din won first place in Hobby Kits, Jonathan Sosa won first place in Pic­ torial Arts and Hobby Kits, Melissa Sosa won first place in Sewing and Jennifer Marek won first place in Science/Educational.

Our Scrapbook won second place and Poster received third place.

In my opinion, all of them are win­ ners!

These are some of the activities that are coming up: Saturday, the 21st -- Shriners Circus October 4, 5, 6 -- Bayfest October 19 -- Folklife in Heritage Park October 20 -- District VII Meeting.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Schůze Společnosti českého dědictví Podzimní celostátní schůze Společnosti českého dědictví v Texasu se bude konat. v sobotu 9. listopadu 1991 v síni Amerických legionářů na ulici North Main Street v Hallettsville, Texas. Dvéře se otevřou asi v deset hodin ráno na zapisování členů a hostů. Každý kdo má zájem o české věcí a dějiny, je srdečně vítán. Bude možné sí prohlédnout české sbírky a rodinné historie a jiné věci, které budou vyloženy na ukázku. Každy si může přinést své české věcí, které by byly zajímavé na prohlídku pro návštěvníky schůze.

Také bude příležitost si pohovořit, besedovat, spřátelit se a seznámit se jeden s druhým.

Oběd se bude podávat v dvanáct hodin v poledne za dobrou cenu.

Informační podíl schůze začne asi v jednu hodinu odpoledne.

W.J. "Vilém" Malina bude mluvit o událostech vedoucí k utvoření Československa a československá role v Druhé světové válce. Potom Ed Roeder a Henry Konvička, oba z Hallettsvillu, budou mluvit o svých zkušenostech při osvobození Československa v roce 1945. Úřední podíl schůze začne asi ve dvě hodiny odpoledne.

Schůze s končí zpěvem "Moravian Czech Heritage Singers" z Lavaca okresu.

Tak přijďte a pobavte se dobře mezi námi.

Stojanův život v Příboře byl tak ružný, "že bylo toho příliš mnoho na jednoho." Kaplan Antonín vstával časně. V zimě, kdy tma klížila víčka i zrána, potřeboval však budíčka. Byla jím sněhová koule, kterou mu kostelník házel na okno. V neděli byla jeho zpovědnice obtočena šňůrou kajícníků již od časných hodin zrána.

Jeden sváteční den, zachycený do kaplanova deníku, vypadá jako babiččina truhla, napěchovaná poklady prostého srdce.

Nový rok 1877. Páter Antonín Sto­ jan započal den již o půl třetí ráno vroucí modlitbou, aby vše, co bude v nastávajícím čase mluvit, myslit a konat, bylo jen a jen k oslavě Pána.

Potom rozevřel breviář. O půl šesté se zahalil do kožichu, který mu pořídili hodní manželé Buzkovi, a šel do zpovědnice, odkud rozdával kajícníkům rady a rozhřešení do čtvrt

na jedenáct. Téměř čtyři hodiny byl vězněm v komůrce Božího milosrdenství, tělo mu tam ztrnule dlouhým seděním, nohy zdřevěněly.

Konečně se mohl zvednout, aby rozehnal mravence v nohou a šel se obléci k asistenci při novoroční mši svaté, která byla slavná.

Takový půlden, strávený v promrzlém kostele na lačno, dodá chuti k jídlu. A neškodilo by po obědě si chvíli odpočinout v tichu kaplanky, pan děkan i starší spolubratr vždy po svátečním obědě si popřejí dechové cvičení vleže. Pro mladšího kaplana Antonína Cyrila odpočinek není, už jsou tu zákazníci na vypůjčování knih.

Páterovi se klíží víčka, tak rád by to časné vstávání dospal. Omytí obličeje studenou vodou takové choutky jakžtakž zažene. Vždyť ve chrámě čekají dvě nekřetěňátka na přijetí do rodiny Boží.

Od zdroje života hned zas je na cestě ke hrobu, neboť téhož dne pohřbívá páter Stojan okresního komisaře, který i za života musel mít vždy něco zvláštního. I hleďme, teď si vybral pohřeb zrovna na Nový rok. Velký pán na velký den. Ale za hranicí, vyměřenou hrobařovou lopatou mají na velikost jinou míru, dej Bože, aby pan komisař tam nebyl notně zklamán!

Tohle si kaplan jen myslí, nežli si pečlivě připraví pohřební promluvu na stejné téma v jiném obalu.

Páter Antonín by si také rád odpočinul, ovšem ne v hrobě, ale aspoň někde na tvrdé lavici u kamen, na jaké sedával za zimních nedělních odpolední u nich doma v chalupě v Beňově u Přerova, na Hané, s knížkou v ruce. Jenže klukovská blaženost zmizela s dávnými sněhy. V kaplance už na něho čekají studenti, jen co se vrátil z pohřbu. Přišli oblíbenému kaplanovi pomoci, budou s ním opisovat matriky.

U večeře si páter Antonín Cyril Sto­ jan v duchu řekl -- díky Bohu za to, že mám co jísti. Kolik rodin v tento sváteční den má na stole jen brambory a kyselé zelí. Domácí soukenictví v kra­ ji upadá, živitelé rodin nemají dost práce a úroda na polích byla špatná.

Ba, v některé rodině je nouze i o ty suché kobzole, jak se na příborsku bramborám říká. Páteru Antonínovi bylo smutno za jiné, při návštěvách nemocných vídával mnoho bídy. V podvečer prvního dne v novém roce teď na své chudé ovečky soucitně vzpomněl, dej Bože, aby tento rok byl pro ně lepší! Ale současně je kaplan Stojan šťasten, že už má starost s mamu přihlásilo několik dalších členů.

Je načase, aby s druhým kaplanem dr. Schneiderem promýšleli, jak pomoci také Velehradu. Tamnější poutní bazilika nutně potřebuje renovaci, to uznáte, pane děkane. Je přece povinností Moravanů, aby toto ohnisko víry opět roznítili. Zatím se roznítil jen mladý kaplan Antonín Cyril v nadšeném horování při hovoru u stolu, jak by se na Velehradě daly uspořádat sjezdy na sjednocení Slovanů. Unie křesťanstva musí přece někde začít, aby všichni byli jedno po­ dle Kristova přání. Historický a památný Velehrad má k těmto sjezdům všechny předpoklady.

Byla by to velká věc, jenž kde na to vzít, chtělo by to velkou organizaci, moc práce a moc peněz.

"Pán Bůh na to dá," zakončil Sto­ jan debatu, protože cítil, jak i při zajímavém hovoru jen ztěží zadržuje oči otevřeny. Přicházely další dny, ste­ jně napěchované. Ráno služba ve zpovědnici, bohoslužba u oltáře, zaopatřování nemocných. Lidé houfně umírali. Nebylo peněz na lékaře, nezbývalo na léky a chleba leckde nahrazovali plackou z brambor. Kob­ zolovou plackou. Kdyby na sádle smaženou, to by byla pochoutka. Ale kdež, v chalupách placky pečou přímo na holé plotně jen na sucho. Jenom Chléb života (hostie) je pro chudé lidi zdarma, jejich duše neodcházejí na věčnost lačné. Pane kaplane, jedem do Drnholce, hostinského tam ranila mrtvice. Ten čaj už nemám čas dopít, slečno, dejte hrníček zatím do trouby.

Pane kaplane, je tu povoz z Myšího, také zaopatřování. Kdy vlastně ten čaj dopijete? Nedopil vůbec. Sotva se páter Antonín vrátil z Myšího, byl tu vzkaz ze Spružinek, těžce nemocná chalupnice prosí o útěchu, povoz nemá. Půjdeme tedy po svých, náš Pán také chodil pěšky.

Ačkoliv byl březen, po jaru ještě ani památky. Na tvář se lepil sychravý vzduch. a na boty bláto. Kostelník doprovázel pátera Antonína jelikož se lépe vyznal ve zkratkách mezemi a výmoly. Vzduchem se rozhlaholily příborské zvony, polední Ave se neslo do dálky. Kaplan s kostelníkem se pomodlili Anděl Páně, potom páter Antonín vytáhl z kapsy zimníku vařené studené brambory.

Dva nabídl kostelníkovi, druhé dva slupl sám i se slupkou. Kostelníkovi kobzole v mun­ dure (brambory ve slupce) moc nejely, chtěl je loupat, ale skřehlými prsty to nešlo. Kaplan se smál, to nejlepší odhodíte se slupkou, jen se toho mun­ duru nebojte!

Když se páter Ant. C. Stojan vrátil zpět na faru, v kuchyni v troubě ještě něco pro lačný žaludek zbylo. Zhltl jídlo ve stoje, nemůže se zdržovat.

Ještě se má učit zpaměti postnímu

kázání, které prosloví v kostele ve tři hodiny.

Kázání bylo vyslechnuto s velkým zájmem, kazatel cítil na sobě oči posluchačů, taková pozornost je pro pamět řečníka jako injekce. Hned po kázání se konala ofěra ve prospěch chudých. Kdyby s miskou na dary stál u oltáře kostelník, nevybralo by se mnoho. I v dobročinnosti je nutno počítat se zákruty křesťanského podvědomí. Konečně, sbírka nebyla konána pro cvičení se v dokonalosti, ale pro zmírnění skutečné bídy. Proto jde žebrat pan kaplan, jemu dát málo by se styděli. Že sotva stojí na nohou?

Ježíš pro nás vydržel víc, tož musím vydržet i já.

Ještě v sakristii nedopočítal obsah misky, už jsou tu zase pro něho, honem, honem, ve Flusově továřně řemen utrhl dělnici dva prsty. Hodně vykrvácela, chce mladého kaplana, aby ji posílil Tělem Páně. Když klopýtal ztemělou uličkou po kočičích hlavách (po hrbolatém dláždění), připadal si jako opilý. Příliš mnoho dojmů na jednoho člověka za jeden den!

Features CHS Of Texas To Hold Fall Meeting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its 1991 fall meeting on Saturday, November 9 at the American Legion Hall on North Main in Hallet­ tsville, Texas. The Lavaca County Chapter of the society will be the host.

Everyone who is interested in Czech history, culture, tradition or genealogy is cordially invited.

Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Members and guests are invited to bring family histories, books, family trees and charts, old photographs, etc. for exhibit. The morning will be spent looking over the various exhibits and will also serve as a fellowship and get­ acquainted period. Lunch, at a nominal cost will be served at noon.

The program for the afternoon, featuring a talk by W.J. "Bill" Malina of Houston, will start at 1 :00 p.m. Mr. Malina will speak on the events lead­ ing up to the formation of Czechos­ lovakia as an independent nation and its role in World War II. After Mr. Malina's talk, Ed Roeder and Henry Konvicka, both of whom are from Hal­ lettsville, will talk about their ex­ periences and participation' in the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945.

Mr. Konvicka is president of the Lavaca County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

The business portion of the meeting will start at 2:00 p.m., with State President Jerry Prochazka presiding.

The afternoon will conclude with entertainment by the Moravian Czech Heritage Singers. This talented group is composed of members from Lavaca and neighboring counties.

The Executive Committee of the Society is scheduled to meet from 11 :00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
