SEPTEMBER 17-23 CONSTITUTION WEEK Take time this week to learn · more about the Constitution ...

THE HISTORY OF CITIZENSHIP DAY AND CONSTITUTION WEEK The United States Congress, in commemoration of the signing of the Con­ stitution, authorized in 1952 an annual Presidential proclamation designating September 17 as Citizenship Day, recognizing that "We the People" are the supreme authority and that citizen­ ship is fundamental to our system of government.

The Daughters of the American Revolution later proposed and Con­ gress approved a second resolution, August 2, 1955, authorizing the Presi­ dent to designate annually the week of September 17-23 as Constitution Week, in recognition of the historic im­ portance of the Constitution and the significant role it plays in our lives today.

The President now issues a single proclamation each year designating both Citizenship Day and Constitution Week, thus perpetuating an annual practice that will remind future generations of the importance of Con­ stitional government.

***the anniversary of September 17 is one of the most significant events in the history of freedom: the signing of the United States Constitution. On this date in 1787, thirty-nine courageous delegates of foresight representing the states affixed their signatures to a document that revolutionized the governing process and established the world' s first government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

The United States Constitution is the world' s oldest written instrument of national government still in use today.

It is the cornerstone of the American republic, a symbol of our national ideals of freedom, justice, and equal opportunity. To commemorate the his­ toric moment when the Constitution was signed, the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Con-

stitution invites every American and every institution---from religious and educational to service and profes­ sional-v-to join in a ringing tribute to the Constitution, "Bells Across America."

In the centuries before telecom­ munication, the ringing of bells in America provided a form of com­ munication-v-celebrating happy events, warning of impending danger, and calling to worship.

The Spanish brought the first bells to the New World from South America.

Settlers in New England brought bells from England for use in their churches.

In many communities churches held spirited competitions over which had the largest or most melodic bell. The demand for church bells eventually gave rise to the bell foundry industry in the Colonies.

Without doubt, the most famous bell in America is the Old State House Bell which rang on July 8, 1776, after the public reading of the Declaration of Independence. This bell, known today as the Liberty Bell, is visited by mil­ lions of people annually at Inde· pendence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.

The bell was cast at Whitechapel Bell Foundry in England in 1752. Its original purpose was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of William Penn's charter founding the colony of Pen­ nsylvania. The biblical inscription, "Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants There­ of" (Leviticus 25:10), signified per­ sonal and religious liberty in Pennsyl­ vania, not independence.

That symbolism came years later.

Shortly after its arrival from England, the bell cracked while being tested. It was about to be returned to England when two young ironmongers attempted to recast it. They broke up the metal, melted it, and added a leaven of native copper to make it less brittle. Unfortunately, after the new bell was hung, it gave forth an un­ speakably wretched" sound. The bell had to be recast, and now carries the date 1753, the year in which it was melted down and remade.

After sounding America's inde­ pendence in July 1776, the Old State House Bell went into hiding in a crypt beneath an Allentown church, eluding British attempts to confiscate it.

Meanwhile, a false .announcement was circulated that it had been buried in the waters of the Delaware River.

Legend has it that, in 1835, while tolling the death of John Marshall, the bell cracked and went silent. A dispute eleven years later over which church bells should ring in honor of George Washington' s birthday led to the decision to repair the old bell.

Workmen hurriedly widened the crack in the bell, hoping to prevent any vibration that would further expand it.

But the attempt failed, and after a few notes the mended bell cracked once more, never to ring again. In the com­ ing years, there was talk of discarding the cracked bell.

The Liberty Bell acquired its familiar name during the years before the Civil War when the Abolitionist movement adopted it and its Biblical inscription as a symbol of their opposition to slavery. Its role, symbolizing the inde­ pendent, patriotic, American spirit, gained wide-spread acceptance during the 1876 Independence Centennial.

Though no longer rung, the Liberty Bell is "tapped" every July 4th and on other momentous occasions. As one of the nation's most treasured legacies, it continues as a symbol of liberty, jus­ tice, and equality.

SPJST CZECH FEST This year's Czech Fest will be held at the Bell County Expo Center on Sep­ tember 22, 1991, as in the past two years, but we have a change and all ac­ tivities will be on the outside.

All of this year's entertainment events and all dancing will be held outside due to the NASA exhibits on the inside.

Tents, 'tables and chairs as well as a covered stage will be provided so you will have a place to sit at the tables and space for dancing. You may dress more casual or, better yet, we encourage you to wear a costume, or a vest or colorful clothing, to help us set a festival-type atmosphere.

Food will be available all afternoon. The sale of kolache, coffee and tea, which is sponsored by the SPJST and all the profits from this booth will be put into the Scholarship Fund.

The $3.50 gate fee, $2.00 for children, pre-school free, covers all entertain­ ment for the afternoon and includes dancing. Food and carnival rides are at an extra cost.

SPJST Member Reaches 96 Years Of Age Another significant event took place in District VI when Brother Adolph Bordovsky of Sweet Home Lodge No. 63, reached the age of 96 years -- and was a recipient of a "Certificate of Ap­ preciation."

On behalf of SPJST, Director Matt Vanek of Victoria, made the special presentation to Brother Bordovsky on June 2, 1991 in Yoakum. The honoree's children were among the at­ tendees to witness the occasion.

Born 11 February 1895 in Shiner (Lavaca County) Texas, Brother Bor­ dovsky is the son of the late Anton and Agnes (Peters) Bordovsky. His father was born in Czechoslovakia and im­ migrated from Ticha, Czechoslovakia, landed in Galveston and settled at St. Mary's, near Hallettsville in Lavaca County. His mother was born at Praha (Fayette County) Texas. He has one brother, August Bordovsky, in Yoak-

After serving in World War I, Brother Bordovsky returned home and later married Rosie Zamecnik in 1925 and they made their home in the Sweet

His wife, Rosie, passed away on March 9, 1979. Prior to his retirement, he always enjoyed gardening and read­ ing; now he is unable to do much, while residing at Steven's Nursing Center in Yoakum.

Brother Bordovsky also enjoys his family very much. His family members include: a son, Raymond Bordovsky

and wife, Irene of Yoakum; a daughter, Alice Janak and husband, Tony Janak of Yoakum (who is a sales representative for Lodge No. 63); and six grandchildren, all of whom are SPJST members.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge, Lodge No. 63 members and all his friends wish him a lot of good health.

The day will begin at 11:30 a.m. with registration of attendance as well as the contests for needlepoint, kolache, horseshoes, and the Christmas orna­ ment contest for the youth. This year needlepoint will be replacing the quilt competition, so all you members, male or female, get out your favorite piece of work. It has also come to my attention that the YOUTH GROUP of Lodge 88 is participating in this program which is most encouraging. I might add, that with the leadership of Barbara Linney and Marie Stayton, their examples of guidance are to be regarded with a de­ gree of respect, as such guidance does much to seeing our young people en­ joying a purpose far more worthy than drifting with no purpose in mind.

AARP Driver's Class at Lodge No. 88

Neal Boydston celebrating his 60th birthday.

Lodge No. 187, Round Rock On Sunday, July 28, 1991 we had our regular general meeting. After the meeting, there was a surprise 60th birthday party for one of our members, Neal Boydston.

Neal is a very dedicated, hard-work­ ing member who .generously devotes many hours volunteering .at our lodge.

A meal of barbecue chicken, sausage, noodles, beans, cole slaw and potatoes was served by Mikeska' s of Taylor. There were 154 family mem­ bers and friends to help Neal celebrate his birthday. District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, were here also to wish Neal a special day.

On behalf of all Lodge No. 187 members, we wish Neal many more happy birthdays!

Lodge No. 88 Hlahol Dramatic Club News This is to remind members and friends of Lodge 88, Houston, that plans for the program scheduled for September 29th are pretty well on schedule.

THE TALENT SHOW OF THE YEAR will be unlike any presentation the club has ever attempted. In the first place, the show will include members of the lodge not necessarily connected with the HLAHOL DRAMA TIC CLUB. In the next place, the members who have been asked to take part are responding with enthusiasm, and above all, with an attitude that they are participating for a cause; the underly­ ing cause being that the members do not want to see the club close its doors.

Very often it is recalled that an operetta or acting in an English play at Lodge 88 was a frequent bit of enter­ tainment that was expected.

It's that time again! The next AARP Defensive Driving Course will be con­ ducted at Lodge No. 88 on October 10 and 11, 1991.

Both dates are required -- time is 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day.

This is a very good opportunity to save a few dollars on your auto in­ surance premiums.

Your certificate of completion is good for a 3-year period.

Newsbrief Stephan and Marlene Clark are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Raychel Anne born Sunday, July 14, 1991 at 5:39 p.m. (exactly 84 years from the day of her great-grandmother, Annie Martinek's birth) in Pres­ byterian Hospital in Dallas. She weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces and was 19 1/4 inches tall. Sharing the excite­ ment included her sisters, Cambry and Miranta and brother, Alan; also grandparents, Johnnie I. and Margaret Krajca of Ennis, Jerry and Naomi Clark-Tucker of San Antonio and great-grandparents, Joe and Annie Martinek of Ennis. From State Youth Director Czech Influence In West, Texas Both Czech and German immigrants remained isolated for a generation in rural farming until new economic op­ portunities were brought in by the rail­ road. Along with new opportunities came conflict. When the city of West was founded in 1892 only a few Czechs owned businesses consisting of small groceries and saloons. Before Czechs could participate fully in com­ munity life, they must first enter into a full range of business activities and in­ teract their families with the com­ munity at large. Leading Czechs, such as Augustin Haidusek, were keenly aware of this problem. Augustin Haidusek, a legendary Czech Texan, wrote a strong plea to the second generation Czechs in 1889. Haidusek's plea along with economic reasons resulted in an increase of Czechs moving to the city.

In 1896, John and Ernest Nemecek established a new high in economic achievement by the Czechs. Ernest Nemecek was a butcher schooled in Czechoslovakia. His skill and financial ability enabled him to compete sue-

cessfully in the predominantly Anglo­ Protestant business community. The market expanded and new facilities were built. This market became well­ known throughout Texas for its Czech­ prepared beef products.

Czechs continued to become in­ volved in the business, political and cultural aspects of the community. By 1910, the Czechs had organized several fraternal organizations. A group called Sokol (Falcon), dedicated to patriotism and physical fitness, was active in West. SPJST held its State Convention at West in 1909.

As early as 1909, Dr. J.S. Zvesper published a supplement of the West News called Westske Noviny. Czech influence continued to increase with the establishment in 1920 of a weekly paper in Czech called Czechoslovak. It was published by the Czechoslovak Publishing Company.

Augustin Haidusek's challenge to be­ come more informed about political and economic affairs was apparently heeded as witnessed by their rise to community status with the estab­ lishment of the Czech businesses and institutions. Today West is an inviting, friendly community with a trace of nostalgia.

From District Youth Counselors Dime Box Hosts District I YAD Dear Readers , On Sunday, August 4, 1991, District I held their annual Youth Achievement Day. Hosting the day's activities was Lodge No. 13, Dime Box. There were over 170 craft entries, two Beseda circles, twenty-four talent entries and seven royalty contestants. The day was full of wonderful talent and excellent craft items. A delicious meal was served by Rick and Connie Mantey of Somerville. Serving as M.C. was former District I and State Queen Melissa Victorick.

All those who attended really seemed to enjoy the activities of the day. YAD is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of our Society to display their talents and to learn about the value of fair competition. All those who par­ ticipated are winners in my book, be­ cause the only losers are those who choose not to participate in the SPJST Youth Program.

Taylor To Host District II Meeting Dear District II Members: A reminder of the District II fall meeting to be held Sunday, September 15 at Lodge No. 29, Taylor. -Registra­ tion is from 1 :00 to 2:00 p.m. There will be a short business meeting and youth program. District II Queen Carey Holman of Round Rock and District II and State King Tommy Rieger of Taylor will deliver their win­ ning speeches.

Youth members are encouraged to enter a Christmas ornament. Judging will be held in all 4 age categories.

Remember, the overall size may be no larger than 3 inches. I hope each of you will enter.

All adults are encouraged to enter in the needlework and pastry contest.

This contest is open to any member of District II 18-years and older. Mem­ bers may enter one item in each category. Items must be made by the individual and the contestant MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN. Pastry category includes any pastry excluding cookies.

The needlework category includes embroidery, crocheting, knitting and needlepoint; any item sewn or made by hand may be entered, only the hand­ work will be judged. No item should be framed.

District III News Congratulations to the winners in State Royalty and State YAD. We are proud of all you winners. However, we are proud of all those who par­ ticipated; without the competition, there would not be a Youth Achieve­ ment Day. Remember, there is next year and it's not too early to start thinking what you're going to entry.

District III camp was the largest we have had in several years. Thank you all for coming; hope you had a good time.

Special thanks to the leaders who came to spend four days with our youth to help take care of them and to show them a wonderful time. Thank you, again, for volunteering your ser­ vices, especially the male chaperones because we really appreciate you guys.

I want to thank Brother Sid Poklad­ ník, District III director, for coming out and visiting with us. Also Presi­ dent Howard Leshikar spend some time with us and we appreciate it. Spe­ cial thanks to Tim, Claudette and Jason Reese for coming and planning an evening event for the teens. The teens loved it and I appreciated it; the teens were ready for bed after that.

Camp, State Royalty and State YAD are over, but remember we will have an overnight in Dallas in November and Holiday-in-the-Park at Six Flags.

Naše politická scéna je zase o jednu "show" bohatší. V Kroměříži, jako už několikrát předtím, pokračovali naši tzv. zástupci v připravě nové ústavy.

"Povídám vám, že jsem je viděla na vlastní oči," pravila stará bílá slepice.

Stála na jedné noze, krk měla natažen a zobák široce otevřen. "Jedno bylo červené a druhé bylo modré. Vajíčka byla stejně velikájako jiná vejce, ale ta barva, pomyslete si, červená a modrá vejce! Kdopak je jenom snesl? Nebyla to některá z vás?"

A stará slepicese rozhltž.elapo hejně slepic a kuřat, které stály okolo ní.

"Já jsem to nebyla. Opravdu ne," řekla kropenatá slepice. "Já snáším velká bílá vejce, která vy všichni dobře znáte. Jsou to nejkrásnější vejce v celém našem statku, smím-li to říci."

"Ach, to bych zrovna neřekla," pravila bílá slepice. "Největší vejce v našem dvoře snáším přece já. Jsou to krásná vajíčka nahnědlé barvy.

Cožpak je o bílá vejce, těch je všude dost, ale hledejte si vajíčka pěkně nahnědlá!"

"Snášíš-li vždycky takové vejce jako onehdy," odpověděla hnědá slepice, "pak by bylo lépe, kdybys o tom raději vůbec nemluvila. Každý se smál. kdo je viděl, jak bylo malé a nepodařené."

"Ty máš vždycky mnoho rozumu," odsekla bílá slepice,"ale nechme toho!

Hleďmeraději vyzkoumat, kde sneslto modré a červené vajíčko!"

"A kde jsi viděla?" tázala se kropenatá slepička.

"Viděla jsem je na stole v sedlákově světnici," odpověděla bílá slepice.

"Vyletěla jsem na sud, který stojí pod · oknem, natáhla jsem krk a dívala jsem se do okna. Tam na stole v malém košíčku jsem spatřila ta podivná · vajíčka."

"Snad je sedlák koupil a chce je nasadit, aby je některá slepička vyseděla," pravila hnědá.

"Dobře, ať si nasadí, ale já bych na takových podivných vejcích jistě neseděla!"

"Já je také nechci," řekla kropenatá. ''To by byla pěkná podívaná, kdybych tu po dvoře vodila červená a modrá kuřata, já, kropenatá slepice! Ne, já nechci být matkou barevných kuřat. Ať si je dá sedlák vysedět některé jiné slepici!"

"Snad si nemyslíte, že bych je chtěla vysedět já!" zvolala hnědá slepice.

"Jen mne to tak napadlo, že by to

sedlák mohl udělat. To by byla pěkná věc, aby s mými žlutými kuřátky pobíhala také kuřata červená a modrá.

Ani slyšet o tom nechci!"

"A nemá naposled bíla slepice špatné oči?" řekla hnědá. "Snad ta vajíčka byla bílá a jí se to tak jen zdálo."

"Když tomu nevěříte, jděte se podívat samy!" řekla rozdurděně bílá slepice a zvedla hlavu. "Uvidíte modré a červené vajíčko jako já."

Kropenatá a hnědá slepice se rozběhly k oknu a za nimi běžely všecky ostatní slepice i kuřata. Jedna po druhá vyskakovaly na sud a hleděly oknem na vejce v košíčku. Bílá slepice měla pravdu. Vajíčka byla modrá a červená. . "Pf-pí-pí-pí;' my také chceme vidět modrá a červená vajíčka,'' křičela kuřata. "My jsme je nikdy neviděla a chceme se také na ně podívat."

"Ach, já nešťastná, co si počnu?" naříkala hnědá slepice. "Moje kuřátka nedají pokoje a chtějí vidět ta podivná vajíčka. Ale jak je mám vysadit na s~d?"

"A . copak jim musíš vyhovět ve všem, co chtějí?" durdila se bílá. "Řekni ne, a dost! Ať dají raději pokoji" "Jak jenom to mohu svým kuřátkům odepřít?" kovakala hnědá slepice a pokoušela se utišit své děti.

Bilá slepice se pustila ke psí boudě a volala na Ořecha: "Není to hrozné, Ořechu? Náš hospodář chce nasadit modrá a červená vajíčka. Co tomu říkáš?"

Ořech se zasmál a pravil: "Ach, vy nerozumné slepice. Což jste nepoznaly, že vejce v košíčku jsou vaše?"

"Nemluv takové hlouposti," řekla bílá slepice a ohlížela se, zdali Ořecha někdo neslyší. "Opravdu, Ořechu, já jsem taková vajíčka nikdy nesnesla."

"A přece jsi· je snesla," smál se Ořech. "Slyšel jsem, jak včera selka pravila k sedlákovi: 'Budete-li barvit velikonoční vajíčka, vezměte je od bílé slepice. Její vajíčka nejsou tak veliká jako od ostatních slepic. Větší vajíčka raději prodáme a více za ně utržíme!'"

"Oříšku!" šeptala mu rychle bílá slepička, "nepovíš-li to nikomu, co jsi mi teď řekl, ukáži ti, kde jsem viděla velikou kost."

Ořech slíbil a bílá slepička mu ukázala, kde ta kost je.

Po několika dnech pravila hnědá slepice: "Nechá-li sedlák ta barevná vajíčka dlouho ležet, nikdo je už : potom nevysedí." · "Ach, zapomněla jsem vám říci, že to nebyla skutečná vejce," řekla bílá slepice. "Byla to jenom malovaná velikonoční vajíčka pro sedlákovu holčičku, a my jsme se zbytečně obáva­ ly' že jsou to vajíčka opravdovská a že je budeme musit vysedět. Řekl mně to · Ořech, ale neptejte se ho na to. Vysmál by se nám."

Adjectives may denote origin or material: Ex.: městský, zlatý. They may denote various relations of place: Ex.: zdejší, mořský, denní, noční, zimní, večerní, etc.

An adjective may be used in two ways: 1) attributively, closely linked with the noun it qualifies. Ex.: krásná zahrada; zdravý člověk; 2) as part of the predicate (verb) Ex.: ta zahrada je krásná; ten člověk je zdráv.

In the attributive use, the adjective has hard, long form. krásn-Ý krásn-Á (fem.) krásn-Ě (neut.) or - "soft" ending for all 3 genders, such as in jarní, letní, etc.

1. Some nouns are used in the plural form only although they denote a single thing. They are called pluralia tantum. masculine:

2. Comparison of adverbs. Adverbs derived from adjectives can form com­ parative and superlative. Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that' s a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
