Drivers who damaged a car rented from Alamo Rent A Car may t,.i due a refund. Between 1983 and :t989, ' Alamo billed drivers for estimated repair charges but may not have repaid the difference if the actual cost was less than the estimate. In an agreement last month with the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of New York, Alamo will repay $3 million in­ overcharges. The refunds will be hand­ led by KPMG Peat Marwick, an accounting firm, which will try to reach shortchanged drivers by Decem­ ber. You can check your status by call­ ing the firm at (800) 327-3664. These days, such overcharges no longer occur at Alamo. When repair bills come back, a computer flags a renter's file if a fund is due.

Who pays when organs are donated? Thousands of people are re­ thinking their organ donor pledges be­ cause of false impression left after several letters from families of donors ran in an Ann Landers column last month. The families said they had been billed $8,000 and up for removal of donated organs. Landers replied that families of donors are never charged for hospital costs associated with organ removal, testing or transplant.

But many readers ignored her response. Moreover, some newspapers carried misleading headlines for the column, such as "Donors are Charged," or left readers in the dark. A follow-up Ann Landers column a few weeks ago restated her original response and urged readers not to tear up organ donor cards. But with a record 23,587 people awaiting organs, directors of organ procurement or­ ganizations are still distressed about a major blow to the pool of donor or­ gans.

Once a patient has been declared brain dead and the next of kin has con­ sented to the organ gift, all hospital charges from that time on are con­ sidered organ removal costs, for which the organ recipient or the insurance carrier is responsible. If billing problems arise, the hospital's transplant coordinator can explain charges and rectify errors. The United Network for Organ Sharing, at (800) 243-6667, can help answer questions and will send a new organ donor card to anyone who tossed a card because , of confusion resulting from the initial contest.. for ..the . :y.outh.. in 4....ag~.. During her time as State Youth Director, many new ideas came into being that have helped the youth mem­ bers of our Society in their growth as responsible citizens.

From The State FAC SPJST Czech Fest The SPJST Czech Fest will be held Sunday, September 22, 1991 at Bell County Expo Center in conjunction with Bell County Fair in Belton, Texas.

The fair will have exhibits from NASA plus a carnival and other exhibits ..

The feature events for SPJST will include a lot of polka and waltz dancing with music by the Vrazels' Polka Band of Buckholts-Cameron and the Czech Harvesters' Band from Dallas, with a polka-waltz contest open to the public.

A feature will also be the German Folk Dancers from New Braunfels who will perform several German dances and also two Czech dances. You will not want to miss this great group of dancers.

A noon meal will be available from 11 :00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and the sale of coffee and kolaches will continue throughout the afternoon with all profits going to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

The $3.50 gate fee covers all dancing, entertainment and viewing of the Central Texas Fair. Food and carnival rides are at an extra cost.

The youth clubs are invited to sell crafts, candy, pastries and popcorn. They will have one table furnished per youth club on which to put their sale· items.

Please notify the Youth Department at the Home Office if you will need a table.

We hope you will set this day aside and mark your calendar and plan to enjoy the fellowship with us on this day.

Minutes Of The Regular Monthly Meeting Of Lodge 88, Houston August 12, 1991 The meeting was called to order at · 7:30 p.m. by President Jerome Ermis.

Flag Bearers Marlene and Darlene Migl and Michelle Linney presented the colors and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

In the absence of Secretary Mildred Holeman and First Vice President Marceil Malak, President Ermis ap­ pointed Second Vice President Pearl Hanka to act as secretary for the meet­ ing.

Pearl Hanka read the names of deceased members since the last meet­ ing, namely: Orville Simons, Aubrey C. Gracey, Jr., Frances M. Plagens, Minnie Bravenec, Kenneth Earl Rus­ sell and Henry W. Chude. The mem­ bership stood for a moment of silence in memory of these departed brothers and sisters.

A roll call of officers followed with two absent: Secretary Mildred Holeman and lst Vice President Mar­ ceil Malak.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved with a correc­ tion.

The names of the applicants since the last meeting were read, and upon a motion by the acting secretary, they were approved for membership.

Pearl Hanka read the correspondence from the previous month: the family of Frances Plagens, Mrs. Juanita Simons and the Minnie Bravenec family.

After calling for officers' reports, President Jerome Ermis talked about fraternal members, those who pick up after those who do not complete the work that was designated to them.

Second Vice President Pearl Hanka thanked the members who gave her something to write about.

Secretary-Treasurer Shirley Stonaker gave the financial report which was favorable.

FAC Homer Alexander reported that he is still collecting eye glasses. Some of our members have really worked hard to collect these eye glasses. It's a great program; "Help · Somebody Today." Homer had received a letter from the LIGHTHOUSE OF HOUS­ TON which is attached to the minutes.

It was a beautiful letter which really let you feel the love that they. extend.

Homer, again, urged people to check their AARP Defensive Driving Records, so they do not let them ex­ pire. His class is in progress right now, August 15 and August 16; the second class to be held on October 10 and 11.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney ex­ pressed her gratitude for the youth.

She said · 22 youth went camping on July 27 through July 30 to Val Verde and had a wonderful "hot weather" time. Barbara stated the youth asked to help the Men' s Club sell their tickets for Czech Day. They took 20 books to sell at $5.00 per book. President Ed Miculka was elated that the youth would help them - it' s a good example of fraternalism. The youth group is planning on a clothing drive in August and September. She also reminded us that ALL the cans of Lodge 88 belong to the YOUTH. That money is put into the SCHOLARSHIP FUND. She named a few who brought cakes for the youth to sell on Thursday night. . They are Ann Bacica, Margie Anders and Betty Theiss. Sister Linney also said the youth would help the Birthday Club in June 1992 with their sale. She took the youth group to Splashtown and to see "My Fair Lady."

Since DYC Marie Stayton had eye surgery, she was not able to be there.

Barbara Linney gave a report for her concerning the DYC report for District V meetings. She commented about Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt making that long trip to Val Verde just to bring their son, Paul, who had been engaged some place here in Houston and wasn't abe to go along in the bus.

The Royalty was District Queen Melissa Havermann and King Keith Kieschnick from Lodge 142; Duchess Tiffany Peter from Lodge 142, and Nicholas Havermann from Lodge 88.

DYC Marie Stayton is so happy about 3 new youth clubs which are being or­ ganized or are already organized. They are Danbury Lodge No. 139, Needville Lodge No. 81 and Rosenberg No. 175 combine and Lufkin.

To conclude her report, District V Director Louis Hanus was asked to come to the podium - he had attended the camp which he does every year, and it seemed they all enjoyed having him, so they presented him with an SPJST T-shirt which he really enjoys wearing.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox reported a good month in July. She stated that the TEA DANCE with Al Pierson went over real well; also the Gus Lindemann dance, the night before, was a big success. Viola thanked Annie Vala for serving food at the Sunday dance.

All our big band dances are DRESS­ CODE DANCES. Who wants to go to a beautiful dance hall like Lodge 88 and not dress up? You well-dressed men don't take your coats off, it's plenty cold to keep your clothes on.

"It's not as bad as it sounds." How­ ever, this does not pertain to the polka and country-western dances: August 24 -- Eddie Ray and The Polka Dots will play " August 30 -- Texas Brew with C/W music August 31 -- Nick Navarro - Big Band Music Do cancel the unused reservations.

Bar Manager Joe Miksch was unable to attend the meeting so there was no report; also Annie Vala had no report for the kitchen and no report from the Social Night Committee. Ed Miculka mentioned his Men's Club as usual. He says he has some real fraternalists in that club.

doing a good job. He was very unhap­ py with the mess-up concerning the tennis court. He said the waste water saved over $900.00. He also an­ nounced Julius Tupa is on the radio, Station 1520, from Rosenberg. He also stated that the piano needs to be repaired.

Auditing Committee Chairman Tom Marsh reported the books were audited and found in order.

President Naomi Spencer, of the Hlahol Dramatic Club, reported on the meeting held August 5 concerning the skits which the committees are to present Sunday, September 29. Bill Malina, the former president of the club, resigned in the middle of the stream which left us all dumb-founded.

Naomi took the job with Tillie Helmcamp as vice president. It was decided to let the chairman of each committee direct their individual skits.

Tillie Helmcamp wrote most of the lit­ tle one-act plays. Naomi asked Pearl Hanka to help advertise in the VESTNIK and she agreed.

Director of the Choral Group Tim Kostom announced that they had a break, and now will go back to re­ hearsals in high gear because they have been asked to sing in a number of places. Their first rehearsal will be held Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, which is September 3.

Mary Kosut gave a good report on benevolence; her report is attached to the minutes.

Brother Wm. Souchek gave an inter­ esting report about his Czech classes, and concluded with a real story.

District V Director Louis Hanus gave a very thorough report. He announced that Vice President Bernie Gebala's father-in-law died August 12. He talked about the youth camping at Val Verde. He added - District V insurance earned was 47 percent. The cost of the VESTNIK in 1991 is $125,000. He also stated that the Home Office is on a budget plan and 94 lodges are on direct billing. The IRS will audit 1989.

The top sales from Lodge 88 go to Franklin Bravenec in first place, with Mildred Holeman in third place and Rosie Tumis from Lodge 142 took

second place. He also reported 9 per­ cent rate for short term, 8 percent Universal Insurance and 7.1 percent Annuity.

Secretary Dorothy Pflughaupt from District V gave the report for District V President Evelyn Mikeska who was absent. On September 15 District V will have its fall meeting hosted by Lodge Magnolia No. 65, Crosby and Lodge San Jacinto No. 91, Crosby at the American Legion. Roast beef and drinks will be provided, and covered dishes from all the members who at­ tend. Also, a fund-raiser for the general fund will be held on November 24 at Lodge 172. Pasadena from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at $5.00 per person.

Dinner and pastry will be served at 1:00 p.m, with the Moonriders provid­ ing the music for the dance.

Those mentioned on the sick list are Emily Sebek, Joe Miksch, Birdie Pech, Mary Ehret, Max Walla, James Holeman and Arnold Cmajdalka. It seems that most of these members are on the mend. Include them in your prayers.

Under the heading of new business, President Ermis made an annoucement as a request by the Supreme Lodge that the membership consider the an­ nual nomination for the "Fraternalist of the Year" award. He suggested that the membership bear this in mind so that the Nominating Committee may look into the qualifications of mem­ bers considered. Further, the nomina­ tion should be made known during the November meeting.

Under unfinished business, the presi­ dent called on our Legal Advisor Richard Schnell for an opinion on a question that was tabled in the July meeting. The question was, "Do we have to make a financial report avail­ able to all members?" Richard stated we should have minimum information available in the office. A motion was made and seconded and passed that anyone who wants to know the finan­ cial results, go to the office; otherwise; do this as has always been done. · The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

Dear Members and Friends: This may be somewhat late but I had to get all the correct information about our past Annual Tarok Tournament held here in Fort Worth on August 3, 1991 which turned out real good and everything was fine despite other ac­ tivities going on in other lodges.

We had a large attendance with 68 players who started play at 9:00 a.m. and came to the end about 5 :00 p.m.

We had players here from many lodges Anthony and Alma Trilicek throughout Texas and some from other celebrated 54 years of marriage in Czech organizations.

There were three judges selected so it was time to start playing. There were 6 rounds to be played and, after they were complete, the winners were as follows: 1st place-Lola Vavra of Caldwell, 2nd-Evelyn Scaff of Burnett, 3rd-Kyle Stuckly of Arlington, 4th­ Otto Kurtz of Fort Worth; many others had high scores. One thing is sure, all had a good time.

Caldwell' s Seventh Annual Kolach ·Festival The seventh annual Kolach Festival will be celebrated on September 14, 1991 on the square in downtown Caldwell, Texas.

The festival is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage. We share the history and bring into today's focus the beauty, talent and delight of the Czech people.

There will be entertainment from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. such as the New Tabor Youth Beseda Dancers, Singers from East Bernard, Texas; also Czech Folk Singers, El Campo Czech Singers as well as our hometown Son­ shine Gospelaires, plus Burleson County Czech Singers and others.

There will be music by the Kovanda Czech Band, Clem Kubicak Band, Haygood Family Fiddlers, Bernadette Jochec and Keyboard.

For the evening street dance, there will be two very popular groups - the Vrazel Polka Band and Lee Roy Matocha Polka Band.

There will be a quilt show, Czech book store, museums, antique automobile show and classis motor cars, fine arts show, antique engines and machinery show, Czech children' s world and kolach eating contest.

There will also be many demonstra­ tions, bakers will compete for Bur­ leson County Bake and Champion and the State Champion.

Hot dog cookout at the river hot dog cookout down at the river. The river was a little low but the youth still enjoyed a swim in the river. Our camp fire ceremony had to be scratched be­ cause the rains finally came. We proceeded to the dining hall where we were entertained by the wonderful musical talent of Jim and Melissa­ Wiederhold. Melissa (Surovik) is an ex-SPJST Youth Club member who has become active in the youth pro­ gram with her three young children. It is very refreshing to have second generation youth in the program. This should tell us something about the ex­ periences of being a youth club mem­ ber.

Assistant DYC Ann Schoeneman at craft hut decorating, swimming, canoeing and archery. Melissa and Jim also had a session with each group on learning new songs. My favorites were "I'm a Nut" and "The Three Little Pigs," We ventured back to the river on Friday night and had our our ham­ burger cookout. The weather was a lit­ tle threatening but it held out for the campfire and even a late night swim.

There were two male chaperones, namely, Jim Wiederhold and Dennis Gaas, who really needed the swim after being bombarded by at least twenty young campers with cans of shaving cream.

Early Saturday morning the boys' cabins had surprise visitors, LITs and chaperones armed with masking tape, lipstick and fingernail polish. How

cott received an award for horseback riding and Boelden Chmelar's award was the Robin Hood award. I bet you can guess what these two young men like the best at camp. Best camper awards were given to Mindy Suehs of Lodge No. 17 and Nicholas Rackel of Lodge No. 13. These two were chosen for their eagerness to participate in all activities, their courtesy shown to adult leaders and their kindness shown to other campers.

Speaking for all campers at District I, there was only one thing wrong with camp. We all missed having Claudette Reese and her family with us at camp.

For the past several years, Claudette, Tim, Jason, Melinda, Michelle and Jennifer have been an important part of our camp and their presence was DYC Susan Skrabanek presents surely missed. We missed Claudette' s wreath to Cornelia, the cook. enthusiasm, her skills in the craft hut many boys came home with pink and her wonderful way of making toenails? The 6 to 9-year-old boys all everyone feel special. We missed Tim's stories about Christy's crossing woke up with a big kiss on their cheek.

Claudette, Tim and Jason did make it to camp on Thursday night prepared to lead a night scavenger hunt, but the weather kept us from going. The youth of District I presented Claudette with an autographed pillowcase. It was real­ ly hard presenting this to Claudette be­ cause the tears would not stay away, just like I'm having a hard time fight­ ing them while I write this letter.

Claudette, I know you are reading this letter because you love the kids of Dis­ trict I as well as the youth around the state and I know you intend on keep­ ing in touch. I just want you to know that we are behind you and we want to see you back at camp next year.

Next letter I'll report on District I YAD and then on our wonderful trip to Schlitterbahn.

Youth Letters District Ill Youth Camp District III attended youth camp July 15-18 at Camp Val Verde. Everything was fun and we enjoyed it, except for the storm on Wednesday.

Monday everyone got to camp and unpacked. We had a hunt that night and the group I was in got lost so we were 30 minutes late.

Tuesday, we had our activities and that night we had a Mardi Gras Party which was fun.

Wednesday it stormed so we didn't do much until it stopped raining. We played volleyball; that is the teens did and then we went on a hayride, which was also the last night.

Thursday, we packed up and said good-bye.

The Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 Youth Club meeting was held on Sun­ day, August 11th.

Jamie Sheppard led the Pledge of Al­ legiance and SPJST Youth Club Pledge.

Twenty members attended our meet­ ing along with one new member, Chris Kolinec.

The Taylor SPJST float won first place in the Elgin Parade . and won second in the Taylor Parade.

The next meeting will be held on September 8 at 5:00 p.m.

District II meeting will be held on September 15th.

A campout will be held on Septem­ ber 21st.

Czech Fest will take place on Sep­ tember 22nd.

Dear Readers, The Lodge 88 Youth Club held its monthly meeting on August 7, 1991.

President Lindsay Michalak brought the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m.

Brian Havemann led the pledge to the U.S. flag. Our members joined together to pledge our benevolence and sing the SPJST Fraternity song.

There were 22 members, 8 adults and one guest present at the meeting. The guest, Valerie Mattiza, is now .a new member of Lodge 88. Congratulations, Valerie!

The minutes from the July meeting were approved as read.

The treasurer gave his report from July. We made $747.10; we spent $502.64, and made a profit of $244.46.

Proudly, I can say that $103.14 of that money went to the our scholarship fund.

The business discussed was State YAD on August 17th and 18th. We also discussed preparations for Family Day in Crosby on September 15, 1991.

Our youth are ready to make Christmas ornaments for the contest and crafts for the craft sale.

On September 29, the Drama Club is having a talent show and the youth will have award winning acts in it.

Lastly, we talked about going to the San Jacinto monument for our next so­ cial; the details are not definite on that yet. We sang to the August birthdays and then Mrs. Linney awarded the LITs for their outstanding work at camp.

The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. and we topped the night off with refreshments.

Lodge 35, Elk Youth Club Report The August 11, 1991 meeting was brought to order and the pledge was led by President Waylon Callaway.

The minutes were read and the treasurer's report was given.

We discussed upcoming events like the Westfest, cake walks, State Royal­ ty, State YAD and the Fraternal Fest.

Sodawater tabs were turned in to be given to the Kidney Foundation, this is a project our youth club has going on right now.

Chris and Jeremiah Mills look refreshed after a swim in the cool waters of the Guadalupe River.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Attend Camp Members of Hill Country Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels, met at the Bavarian Village at 7:00 p.m.

The main topic of discussion was preparation for camp. Mrs. Haag, our youth leader, instructed each m~mber what would be needed for camp. Mem­ bers were also asked to sign up for two committees for the coming year.

After the meeting, the members looked over various pictures taken at Youth Achievement Day and were asked to identify the category won in.

We left for camp on Saturday, July 27 from the Bavarian Village for our destination Camp Val Verde. Parents driving us to camp included Mrs. Haag, Mrs. Mills and Mr. and Mrs. Doeppenschmidt. Parents who picked us up at camp included Mrs. Haag, Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Popp.

Dear Readers, Our youth club meeting was held July 21, 1991. There were 12 youth and 6 adults present.

Under old business our weekend trip to Schlitterbahn was planned for August 3rd and 4th. We also donated watermelons to the Moody Rest Home for the month of July.

Under new business, we are planning our overnight camping trip to Seaton and the Fraternal Fest on September 21st and 22nd. We will also have a cake walk during the Jerry Haisler dance on August 10th.

Snook Youth Win In District I YAD District I YAD was held in Dime Box on August 4th. We had a lot of fun. I was in a skit called "Cotton County," and we placed second.

Chad Kovar ran for King and I ran for Duke in District I; both of us won at district level. Good luck was wished to Chad, at State, in Temple on August 17th.

New Braunfels Youth Receive SYAD Awards Fifteen members of Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club attended and participated in SPJST Youth Achieve­ ment Day on August 18, 1991 at the Frank Mayhorn Convention Center in Temple.

Several members were winners in the various categories. In the 6-8 age group, Ross Reynolds won third place in Food and Michelle Popp won second place in Constructed Items.

In the 9-11 age group, Robert Popp won first place in Handicraft, Holly Reynolds won first place in Pictorial Ars, Stacey Branham won first place in Needlework, and Jonathan Haag won third place in Individual Talent.

In the 12-14 age group, Devin Koeh­ ler won first place in Science and Education and Amy Doeppenschmidt won third places in Pictorial Arts and Constructed Items.

Other members who participated in the Crafts, Talent or Special Categories were Derek Koehler, Kelly Reynolds, Brett Doeppenschmidt, April Haag, and Chris, Andrea and Jeremiah Mills.

Chris Haag was awarded a $500.00 District VII Merit Point Scholarship.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Attend Camp Fourteen members of Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club attended Dis­ trict VII summer camp at Camp Val Verde, near McGregor during July 2730, 1991. The group enjoyed the ac­ tivities that were planned. They, especially enjoyed the tour of In­ nerspace Caverns, near Georgetown, on the return trip home.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 9 in Snook had their regular meeting on July 31, 1991. We had three visitors; please come, again.

Our youth club had a hamburger cookout and baseball game at the Snook City Park on July 28th. We really had a good time.

We have been working on crafts and practicing for YAD. Good luck was wished to everyone.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Picnic Outing SPJST Lodge No. 185 met on June 20 at Preiss Heights for their annual summer picnic. Youth members and adult members enjoyed swimming in the Guadalupe River. Everyone then enjoyed a barbecue rib.dinner.

After dinner Mrs. Haag held a draw­ ing for the attendance prize, it was won by Michelle Popp. Robert Popp and Brett Doeppenschmidt received birthday presents. The youth club then enjoyed a water balloon throw.

Lodge 9, Snook News Dear Readers, I attended my first District I YAD on August 4 in Dime Box. It was very in­ teresting and fun. I really enjoyed par­ ticipating in the crafts, group talent and being duchess for Becky. I, espe­ cially liked getting money for par­ ticipating. I was also looking forward to attending my first State YAD in Temple.

I also attended my first District I trip to Schlitterbaun in New Braunfels on August 5th. I liked that a lot especially playing in the kiddie parks and wave pool with my little brother.

Mr. Johnson was born July 28, 1922 in Daisetta, Texas, the son of Ernest Arshield and Sarah Garrett Johnson.

He graduatedfrom Hull-Daisetta High School and married Sara Nell Savage on December 23, 1947 in Caldwell, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1949.

Mr. Johnson was the owner of E.E. Johnson and Associates where for many years, he had served Burleson and surrounding areas.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell and was a church lay leader as well as serving onthe Administrative Council and will be remembered for his great support of the youth.

He was a past county road superin­ tendent, a member of the Industrial Foundation Board, Chamber of Com­ merce, and trustee for the Caldwell In­ dependent School District for 12 years.

Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a pilot in the South Pacific where he obtained the rank of Captain.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Johnson.

Sister Vytopil was born. November 25, 1899 in Ennis, the daughter of Paul and Theresa Patacek 0ZY1Jl.Y. She was raised in Ennis and attended school in Ennis. She was married to Ed Bobalik on September 9, 1919. He preceded her in death in May 1934. On September 15, 1950 she married Joe Vytopil of Ennis. He preceded her in death in February 1973.

Sister Vytopil was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ennis, SPJST Lodge No. 135, Sokol Ennis, and the Ennis Ladies Sewing Circle.

She is survived by one daughter, Emilie Slovak of Houston; one stepson, Jodie Vytopil of Ennis; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, one . brother, Rudy Ozymy of Ennis, five greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgranddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews. Judge McDonald Honored Senior District Judge W.T. "Tom" McDonald, Jr. of Bryan was named the Adult Correctional Administrator of the Year at the annual conference of the Texas Corrections Association, held on July 3 in Galveston. McDonald was cited for his support of community corrections, service on the Judicial Ad­ visory Council of the Texas Depart­ ment of Criminal Justice and member­ ship on special committees of the State Bar of Texas. He was also recognized for his contributions to criminal justice literature and involvement in the train­ ing of new judges.

Judge McDonald is a jurist with Judi­ cial Arbitration and Mediation Ser­ vices, Inc. and a senior district judge, serving around Texas by special as­ signment. He is chairman of the vic­ tim-witness assistance committee of the State Bar. Judge McDonald is an SPJST mem­ ber of Lodge No. 189, Bryan-College Station.

McLennan-Hill Counties Czech Heritage Society Report The first meeting which over 70 people attended took place at the KC Hall in West on August 18, 1991.

The president called the meeting to order. Various meetings and celebra­ tions were brought to the attention of everyone.

Alden Smith spoke of the rapid chan­ ges that are taking place in Czechos­ lovakia. He also made special mention that on October 4, the mayor of Brno and 20 other delegates will be at Hill Junior College. In the afternoon, they will tour Hillsboro, West and stopping at the Abbott hall for "svacina" in the afternoon.

He extended an invitation for everyone to meet these guests at Ab­ bott.

The door prize, a decorated egg which Alden just recently brought from Brno, was won by Mrs. Joe Svrcek.

Ke konci mé letoší jarní návštěvy ve staré vlasti mne zaujal několikavětný článeček "Na W.C. jen s občankou," na třetí straně novin Svobodnéslovo, z pátku 24. května, v každodenním sloupci, zvaném "Všimli jsme si."

Tyto noviny jsem si koupil v chodských Domažlicích, v jižních Čechách, asi 15 kilometrů severně od pohraničního přejezdu jménem Folmava, kudy jsem později projel mým pronajatým autem do Frankfurtu k letadlu zpět domů do Houstonu.

"Na W.C. jen s občankou," citováno doslova, zní takto: "Bože, dědo, co se ti stalo?" spráskla jsem onehdy ruce nad naším dědečkem, který se vrátil domů v úplně mokrých kalhotách. "No, co! Po obědě jsem si dal pivo, přišlo to na mě, tak jsem si zašel na W.C. Tam byla paní výběrčí.

Dávám jí padesátník a ona na to, že důchodci nad 65 let mají sice 50 pro­ centní slevu, ale musí to dokázat občankou. Než jsem ji našel, tak se to stalo." Začala jsem se smát. Kalhoty jsem vyprala. Aby se příhoda neopakovala, našla jsem malou krabičku, nadepsala "W.C.", dala do ní nějaké drobné pro naléhavý případ.

Tak jsme záležitostvyřídiliu nás doma a vřele podobné opatření doporučuji všem starším lidem, jestliže ovšem na slevě, kterou provozovatelská společnost Inter - co opravdu důchodcům nad 65 let poskytuje, trvají, nezbývá jim nic jiného než vstupovat na W.C. s občankou v ruce.

Poslyšte nyní co se přihodilo mému spolucestovateli při naších jízdách po vlastech českých!

Při projíždění jednoho z menších úhledných měst v jihovýchodních Čechách mi zdělil můj spolucestující

· přítel; že nutně potřebuje jít na stranu, abych mu tedy zastavil u veřejných záchodků, kamž jsme právě přijížděli na tamějším náměstí. Nechal jsem ho vystoupit, zaparkoval jsem pak jen pár kroků za rohem, a šel jsem též "navštívit" toto důležité místo.

Co však nevidím a neslyším!

Můj známý tam poskakuje a přešlapuje z nohy na nohu, dohadujíc se se starší ženou, která ho nechtěla pustit do "mužského oddělení" bez předchozího zaplacení. On, chudák, měl jen větší bankovky a neměl žádné drobné mince! Naštěstí měl jsem v kapse pár korun a jak jsem byl s to za oba nás zaplatit, jinak by jsme tam ještě dnes přešlapovali a žádonili o blahosklonné použití záchodků na úvěr, než proměníme nějakou tu bankovku v blízskýchobchodech a pak zaplatíme na záchodě náš účet! Paní pokladní se řešení tohoto druhu nezamlouvalo, neboť před mým příchodem řekla zvýšeným hlasem mému známému, že tu se platí předem, jelikož nikde není zaručen návrat "zákazníka", který již použil hygienického zařízení bez zaplacení.

Paní výběrčí si nakonec neodpustila ještě tuto poznámku' "To by mohl přijít kdekdo s nějakou velkou bankovkou, chtíc po mě veškeré mé drobné! Copak jsem já tady nějaká banka či směnárna?" I když je kus pravdy v tom co řekla ta žena, tak záchodkové prohlížení občanek a vybírání poplatků za použití těchto míst by mělo počkat až po "úlevě" zákaznictva.

Mějte však všichni připraveny -- pro strýčka Příhodu -- korunky i padesátníky, čert nikdy nespí!

Závěrem přikládám nepoužitou stvrzenku za použití záchodků v železničních stanicích. Zřejmě je tu poloviční cena proti městským či čistě soukromým podnikům tohoto druhu.

Nával tu však nebyl. Nižší cena nevyt­ vořila větší poptávku a tím větší příjem! .

Je to tedy privatizace neboh soukromé podnikání?

Jak začalo slunce hřáti, ucítila pampeliška pod zemí teploučko. Ihned vytrčiladva zelenélupínky a blaženě se rozhlédla po světě.

"Abys ty tu také honem nebyla," kořenem. Začal od kraje záhonu a šířil přivítala ji nevlídně tráva. Nemají se hrůzu a zničení. Štěstí, že slunce zašlo. spolu rády a je mezi nimi starý svár. Mladá pampeliška zavřela květy a opět Pampeliška nedbala, rostla den za je zabalila do zeleného kabátu. dnem jako z vody. Rozkládala lupeny Zahradník jí neviděl a šel domů.

Několik dní nepřišel v tyto strany na všechny strany jako hvězdy.

"No, no, jen se tak neroztahuj, nejsi parku. Když se zase ukázal, volala· tu sama," bručela tráva. Ale chtíc tráva na něho: "Pomoc, pomoc!" nechtíc, musila ustupovat. Pampeliška "No, co pořád máš? Vždyt' jsem se s ní nehádala, neměla kdy. Chovala všechny pampelišky vytrhal. Nikde tu si uprostřed listů poupě. Opatrně je není zlatých květů," povídal balila do zeleného kabátu, aby mu zahradník. Ale když se lépe podíval, viděl v trávě místo zlatého květu bílou nebyla zima.

Jednoho dne slunce tolik hřálo, že kouli z pápěří, "Jak, tys tu ještě?" rozzlobil se a šel toho už nevydržela. Rozepla kabátek, rozložila květ, že zasvítil v trávě jako ji vytrhnout. Ale vítr zafoukal a plno zlatý. Se všechstran volalyna ni sestry. peříček se rozlétlo po záhoně. Byla to seménka pampelišky.

Tráva bručela, zahradník huboval, Děti se radovaly: "Teď už je oprav­ dické jaro. Pampelišky kvetou!" ale vítr se jim smál: "Jen ať tu Včelkyse radovaly: "Sedněme honem seménka přespí zimu. Na jaře z nich na květya naberme si zlatého prášku!" budou nové květy. Jaké by to bylo · Pěkně tu bylo v teplém jarním jaro bez pampelišky?" vzduchu! Toho dne měla pampeliška Jan Koukol. svátek.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
