winner in District VII was Monta Foster of Lodge 31 in Yoakum. Con­ gratulations to both of you! Your ef­ forts on behalf of the Society and the efforts of the other sales repre­ sentatives who participated in this en­ deavor are deeply appreciated.

Participating sales representatives in Districts VI and VII recently spon­ sored sales contests in their particular district to "Gin Up" some competitive spirit among one another. SFR Jerome Hlavaty monitored the contest which was based on most insurance written from May 1-31, 1991. SFR Hlavaty, District VI Director Matt Vanek, and District VII Director Thelma Hrncir originated the district contests with in­ itial deposits into the cash awards.

Each sales representative which also donated participated in the contests and worked diligently to achieve the goal of most insurance written for May for their district.

The winner in District VI based on most insurance written for .May was James Bacak proudly displaying the James Bacak, sales representative for cash award of $36.~0 he received as Lodge 40 in El Campo-Hillje, and the contest winner for District VI.

LUBBOCK -- Recently, Sister Al­ bina (Bartos) Macha was honored by District IV Director Stanley Broz on behalf of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, with a Certificate Award presentation for outliving her policy at age 96. She was a dedicated member of longstand­ ing at Lodge No. 157, Lubbock.

Born 30 January 1895 in Flatonia (Fayette County) Texas to Marie Sem­ bera Bartos and Simon Bartos, she no doubt has beautiful memories of her parents living in Fayette County.

Her father was born in Ceske Bucl ~;ovice, Czechoslovakia and came to this country with his parents at age 17, went to school for 2 years to learn

The Excerpts of the minutes from the last quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting by Secretary - Treasurer Leonard D. Mikeska are in this issue; all of you are encouraged to read them carefully because they are printed for your information.

You will notice the subject was brought up for discussion in the last quarterly Supreme Lodge meeting.

It seems as though the Beseda par­ ticipation is creating more and more interest; there were seven circles of Beseda dancers in their beautiful and colorful costumes from Dallas, New Tabor, New Taiton and Seaton lodges.

We salute their instructors/directors for keeping the Czech culture alive in SPJST; the officials are very grateful for your continued interest and expos­ ing the culture to the general public.

Lodge 84, Dallas, captured first place in Junior and Senior Beseda divisions.

The achievement of State Teen and Junior of the Year awards are not simple tasks to achieve; in this respect, .

Melissa Victorick and Kathryn Kovar, both from Snook lodge ( District I) ac­ cepted the prestigious recognition from District III Director and Chair­ man of the Board Sid Pokladník on be­ half of SPJST. Additional top point awards were presented to only four teens, namely Lana Urbanovsky (District I), Michelle Linney (District V), Danny Borak (District VI) and Chris Haag (District VII), who qualifed for the $500.00 District Merit Point Scholarships.

Another exciting and highest honor any teen can accomplish is the $1,000.00 SPJST State Merit Point Scholarship (earned within a hardworking 3-year period) was awarded to Melissa Victorick from Lodge 9, Snook (District I) by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, A Special Category "Odyssey" was added to this year's competition in four-age divisions, which was some­ thing else .. The 139 entrants who par­ ticipated in this category drew youth members who showed many talents.

(We hope the pictures turnout for fu. . ture publication.) Afterwards, all the complete entries were displayed for viewing - and, from the editor's obser­ vation, there wasn't a duplicate entry from the "odds and ends" they worked with. Our compliments to all of you for your originality!

Of course, the Individual and Group Talent entries which gets bigger and better, were also enjoyed by everyone while the entrants worked on their recycled craft.

The announcements of YAD win­ ners, by Brother Leonard Jansa of Dis­ trict IV, went quickly, especially in the over 200 plus arts/crafts and scrap­ books. . . .

Meanwhile next day (Sunday) at Youth Achievement Day was no exception when many entrants again ' ' from ages 6 through 17 were busy trying to register their entry and/or entries from all over the state. The editor has seen the second generation . . . . . of active youth parncípatíng m some type of youth activity since 1969; for instance Kelli (Andel) Jahns, who sang "St ar S pang l ed B anner, " is . th e daughter of Norma Alford (a former secretary to two Supreme Lodge Vice Presidents); and this year's District VI Queen Contestant Lenice Kaspar's mother, Karen Dorotík Kaspar, was also a former District VI queen. Isn't that a nice family record?

Minutes Of The Third Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SP JST Held July 8 · 10, 1991 At The Home Office In Temple, Texas.

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge memberspresent: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

MINUTES - The minutes of the SupremeLodge meeting of April 10 - 11, 1991 were considered page-by-page. On motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Broz, the minutes were accepted as presented. The motion carried u­ nanimously.

Director Vanek suggested that to eliminate drafts of the minutes, that their printing in the Vestnik be delayed approximately 90 days until they are ap­ proved by the SupremeLodge. Action deferred.

AUDIT • The following audit assignmentswere made: 1. Safety deposit audit of securities: Secretary-TreasurerMikeska, President Leshikar, Vice President Gebala, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Directors Kohutek, Hrncir and Pokladník.

2. Vouchers: Director Vavra and Director Broz.

3. Ledger: Director Hanus, Director Vanek and Financial Secretary Mikulas.

AGE 96 PRESENTATIONS - Good response has been received on the age 96 presentations.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE PROGRAM - There was discussion about the expecta­ tions and financial support the director of the program requested. There was discussion about setting up a pilot program if an interested lodge can be found.

(Susan Skrabanek, the District I DYC and a member of Lodge No. 17, arrived to visit a portion of the afternoon session.)

It was decided that the president report back to the Board with a program recommendation. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT - President Leshikar brought up the matter of scholarship endowments and asked for input from the Board. There was a discussion about the mechanics of setting up a scholarship endowment fund and how scholarships would be awarded.

A motion was adopted that further work be done on the premise that scholar­ ships could be granted in the name of a donor, or donations could be placed in a fund and donors recognized and awarded plaques. The motion was by Director Broz, seconded by President Leshikar, and it carried unanimously.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - Report was made that the precamp registration stands at 515. He discussed the potential effect a public school system's full­ year school program would have on our youth camps.

Some 51 individuals attended the LIT workshop held at Camp Val Verde.

100 PERCENT SPJST FAMILIES - There was discussion about entering into agreement with a photo service to take family pictures in lodges and providing one portrait for the program recognition and then presenting the families with the opportunity to buy all or a portion of a photographpackage.

President Leshikar moved that the picture proposal be tried on a trial basis in a large lodge and a small lodge. The motion was seconded by Director Kohutek, and it carried unanimously.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:25 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., July 9, 1991.

OFFICERS' REPORTS· The SupremeLodge Officers' reports were acknow­ ledged on unanimously adopted motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Direc­ tor Kohutek. (Reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 10.)

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS:

Recess was taken from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to allow time to complete the audit.

BONUS TO FIELD FORCE - A 1/2 percent Bonus was approved for the field representatives on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by Direc­ tor Vanek and carried.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - Claudette Reese had requested time to talk to the Board. She met with the Board in connection with the position of State Youth Director. The Board discussed the matter with her during executive session.

She stated that she would not accept reinstatement to the position.

LOCALIZED TRAINING - Report was made on plans to schedule more semi­ nars in each district to shorten the distance sales representatives will need to travel to attend.

SALES MATERIAL - He reviewed a proposed letter to be mailed to members of lodges that do not have a sales representative.

OLD BUSINESS PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR· Consideration was given to the resignation of Claudette Reese and her statement that she would not accept reinstatement to the position.

Claudette Reese' s letter of resignation was read.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved that Claudette Reese's resignation be accepted ef­ fective the date stated in her letter (5-31-91) and that she be written a letter of appreciation for her services to the society. The motion was seconded by Direc­ tor Broz. There was discussion. Vote was taken and the motion carried unani­ mously.

CZECH LANGUAGE ALLOCATIONS • Report was made that allocations were paid to: Alief ISD, University of Texas at Austin, Spring Branch ISD and Alvin CommunityCollege.

LODGE REORGANIZATIONS • Report was made on the disbanding of Lodge No. 100 - Sebesta, and concerning the potential of Lodge No. 184, Moulton.

REINSURANCE - The Board took up the matter of our $50,000 retention limit. After discussion, a motion was adopted that Vice President Gebala get more information and factual data for consideration, and that he mail the report to the Board prior to the October Supreme Lodge meeting. The motion was made by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Director Vanek and it carried.

NEW LODGES IN PROCESS - There was a discussion about number of potential lodges that have been assigned lodge numbers. The lodges are: Lodge No. 182 - Marlin, Lodge No. 194-Killeen,Lodge No. 195-Cleburne,Lodge No. 200-Bruceville/Eddy,Lodge No. 192-Silsbee,Lodge No. 190-Yorktown,Lodge No. 197-Rockportand Lodge No. 198-LaVernia.

CHARTERED LODGES WITH LESS THAN 20 MEMBERS - Lodges that are chartered but do not have 20 or more members are: Lodge No. 103Flatonia, Lodge No. 171-Lockhart,Lodge No. 85-Munday,Lodge No. 90-Stam­ ford, Lodge No.149-Alvin and Lodge No. S-Weimar.During the April Supreme Lodge meeting, a 6-month period was allowed for the potential lodges to get 20 members or be broken up if it does not appear possible for the lodges to meet the charter requirements.

There was a discussion about the approximately 90 members who were placed in the Home Office group indentified as Lodge 999 and the reasons they were placed in this group.

CHARTER LODGE RESTORATION • Funds expended to date were $6,813.82 out of the $20,000 Convention allocation. Other restoration inquires are pending.

Work will be done on the group of chartered lodges with less than 20 members.

1992 CONVENTION - Report was made on the first meeting of the local con­ vention Planning Committee.

ANNUITY ENDORSEMENTS - There was a discussion about annuity endor­ sements that are needed. The endorsements were unanimously approved on mo­ tion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Director Hrncir.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, MUSEUM - Some 1,110 individuals had visited the facility this past quarter. Museum Curator Thelma Groppell has retired and a letter of appreciation will be written to her for her services to the Society.

SECRETARY-TREASURER MIKESKA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS:

FAC TRAINING - Report was made that 6 FAC workshops were held with good attendance at each.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - Report was made that all delinquent loans were reviewed and based on available information, a loss reserve for potential losses was set at $81,000 covering losses that could possibly be incurred on seven loans.

75-YEAR PIN PRESENTATIONS· The number of 75-year members were: 1988-90- 15; 1991 - 12; 1992 - 7; 1993 - 6. A 75-year pin was being designed for approval in the next meeting.

IRS FORMS 990/990-T - There was a review of those lodges that have not fur­ nished the Home Office with a copy of their IRS Form 990.

The laser printer machine selected by the officers which provides economy of operation and should give a number of years ser­ vice has a cost of $3,695. After discussion, it was decided on motion by Direc­ tor Broz, seconded by Director Vavra, that the previous motion on this matter be rescinded and that the sum of $3,695 be authorized for purchase of a FAX machine including authority to enter into a service contract. VESTNIK -The subscription fee of $14 per year was left unchanged since it is sufficient to pay printing and mailing costs. The estimated yearly cost of print­ ing and mailing the Vestnik is approximately $125,000.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - The Board reviewed the audit report and manage­ ment letter prepared by the firm of Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd and Therrell, P.C. Action was postponed until later during this meeting.

Bids from independent audit firm.s will be obtained and submitted for con­ sideration in the October meeting for a three-year period.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT • The quarterly statement of the financial af­ fairs of the Society was reviewed and discussed.

DIRECT BILL LODGES - It was reported that 90 percent of our certificates are on direct billing through the Home Office. There is no waiting list and lodges can be immediately converted to direct bill.

1991 BUDGET - There was a review of the income and expense for the first six months of 1991 comparing actual expenses with the budgeted amounts.

NEW BUSINESS MATTERS:

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM • Report was made that Dorothy Pechal had been hired as the curator of the LAM . .He reported that John and Birdie Pech recently donated books, music and various artifacts to the SPJST LAM. There was a discussion about the possibility of setting up a separate non­ profit corporation to operate the library and museum and work toward ac­ cumulating a self-sustaining endowment fund for acquiring a facility and the ongoing operation of the library and museum. The idea would be pursued in fu­ ture meetings.

SUPREME LODGE MEETING • The next Supreme Lodge meeting was set to begin on Monday, October 7 at 8:30 a.m.

NATIONAL FRATERNAL CONGRESS (NFC) • The NFC is involved in two major projects and is seeking involvement of Societies. The matter was tabled on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hanus and carried unanimously.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: LITIGATION, TAX SUITS • He reviewed his report of pending and threatened tax suits involving property securing SPJST mortgages.

FORECLOSURES, PENDING OR IN PROCESS OF WORKOUT - Report was made on foreclosure activity involving seven delinquent loans. Several were brought current or are making workout payments.

BANKRUPTCIES - Report was made on nine bankruptcies of individuals in­ volving mortgage loan securities.

LEGISLATION

- He gave an overview of House Bill 2, the insurance bill.

LOCAL LODGE OFFICERS' HANDBOOK • The proposed local lodge officers' handbook was reviewed. Copies would be provided to Supreme Lodge members for interim use and further review will be done at the next meeting.

The remainder of the directors' report was deferred to meet with Jam.es Therrell and Philip Jander, representing the firm that conducted our independent audit.

Mr. Therrell reviewed the auditors' opinion which he referred to as a clean opinion. He reviewed the financial statements, statements of operations and surplus and answered questions. The auditors' report on internal control struc­ ture and other matters was reviewed. The auditors also discussed the pension plan and compared a defined benefit plan with a defined contribution plan which they recommended should be considered.

DIRECTOR HANUS • He reported on his activities the past quarter including scholarship awards, an insurance matter and the District V YAD. DIRECTOR VANEK - He discussed convention arrangements, presentations, and other activities in District VI. DIRECTOR HRNCIR • She discussed the District VII YAD, and spoke of the need to finish the SPJST Czech Language tape. ' DIRECTOR POKLADNIK • He discussed an age 96 presentation to Mrs. Terezie Marek in West, the District III YAD, and other duties.

GROUP BENEFITS - Report was made that the provisions of the action taken the previous meeting were reviewed with our actuary and an amendment is needed to more fully define qualified retiree. After discussion, Secretary­ Treasurer Mikeska moved and Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded that the provision be amended to read as follows: It is agreed to authorize payment of the retiree's portion of the group Health Care premium.s on future qualified retirees subject to a limitation that the amount paid for a retiree' s health care premium.s will not exceed the standard

MARKET POTENTIAL - He referred to listings grouping lodges by district and indicating jhe number of sales representatives and certificates in force in each lodge.

MIKESKA'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS:

REAL ESTATE LOANS/DELINQUENCIES· A list of delinquent loans was considered with recommendations for action. The recommendations for action were approved on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Director Hanus, and it carried unanimously.

LODGE LOAN - The Board took up a request for a loan of $225,000.00 from SPJST Lodge No. 183-Mid Cities. The purpose of the loan was stated to refinance a bank loan secured by the land and lodge building.

Recess for the day was taken at 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., July 10, 1991.

It was decided on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Director Vavra to approve that we accept for consideration and appraisal the loan application of $225,000.00 from SPJST Lodge No. 183-Mid Cities to be secured by the lodge land, building and also personal property, subject to custom.ary requirements and appraisal. The personal property will only be included in the custom.ary Deed of Trust. The interest rate on a 20-year term will be 9 3/4 percent with a 2 1/2 percent discount under the previously adopted 50-new member rule if the lodge's certificate count increases by 50-new certificates during the 12 months preceding the loan anniversary date, loan payments are current and other re­ quirements are met. Motion carried unanimously.

MINUTES OF SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS' MEETINGS - The minutes of Supreme Lodge officers' meetings concerning investments were approved on motion by Director Broz, seconded by Director Hmcir and carried unani­ mously.

SECOND QUARTER INVESTMENTS • A list of real estate loans closed and investment transactions was reviewed and the actions were ratified on motion _ by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Vanek; carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT POLICY • A copy of our current Investment Policy was reviewed and affirmed on unanimously adopted motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Kohutek.

UNIVERSAL LIFE RATE - The Universal Life rate was reviewed and the gross yield on assets allocated to UL was reported to be 9.7648 percent. It was reported that assets allocated are bonds and mortgages on approximately a 2 to 1 ratio. The gross spread of 1. 7648 percent was found acceptable and the UL annualized rate was affirmed to remain at 8 percent for the period effective August 1, 1991 through October 31, 1991. The motion affirming the rate was

ANNUITY RATE • The annuity rate was reviewed. There was a lengthy dis­ cussion about interest rate risk, maintaining a gross spread of near 2 percent, holding the allocated assets to a relatively short term and level of com.mission paid on annuity deposits. The current gross spread is 1.4047 percent. After due deliberation, it was decided on motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to set the accumulation period rate for annuities at 7.1 percent for the period from August l, 1991 through October 31, 1991. The annuity payout rate was left at 8 percent effective for the period from August 1, 1991 through October 31, 1991. Motion carried with eleven in favor and Director Vavra abstaining.

LOAN APPLICATIONS - Consideration was given to the.$25,000.00 SPJST insurance recommendation to qualify for an SPJST mortgage. After due deliberation, it was agreed to dispense with the $25,000.00 SPJST insurance re­ quirement. Vote was 11 in favor and Director Broz voting in opposition. The motion was by President Leshikar and seconded by Vice President Gebala.

HOME OFFICE BUILDING • Report was made that a study was underway as to what can be done to better manage the Home Office utilities' costs for heat­ ing and cooling. This might involve an energy management system and phasing out old equipment as compressors need replacement. Information will be presented to the Board during the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

FINANCIAL SECRET ARY MIKULAS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: DELINQUENT LODGES - Report was made that only two group bill lodges are delinquent with premiums.

INCOME/EXPENSE-A

report was reviewed comparing 1991 with 1990.

DELEGATE COUNT FOR 1992 CONVENTION· The delegate count for the XXVI Convention was estimated at 307. Based on past experience, it was estimated that actual representation would be near 280. The final determination of delegates for each lodge will be made just prior to October 1, 1991.

IRS AUDIT • Report was made that the IRS will conduct an audit of the Society records on July 11 - 12, 1991.

LEGAL ADVISOR KACIR'S NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: FORECLOSURE SALES - It was agreed that if there are two or more distant foreclosures on the first Tuesday of any month, that authority be granted to SPJST officials to ·travel by air, either by commercial or private craft if com­ mercial is not available.

DIRECTOR VAVRA - It was agreed to get bids for reconditioning the Home Office sign and possibly adding "Museum" to the sign for consideration in the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

The $625.00 bonus for each of the four sales representatives was ap­ proved to be based on a 25 percent increase of the contest period over the pre­ vious six months and to be based on premium income. The motion was by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

He stated he appreciated receiving the officers' reports by mail prior to the meeting to allow them time to study the information.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR • She discussed the value of sharing information with the SPJST Finance Committee and encouraged this practice to better inform the committee so that they can do a good job. She stated that this had been a productive meeting and she enjoyed it.

DIRECTOR POKLADNIK • He reminded everyone that they should be prepared to give various information and recommendation to the various con­ vention committees even though many Supreme Lodge recommendations were not approved in the past. He encouraged making any recommendations that the Board feels are good for the Society.

He discussed the upcoming 100-year anniversary of the Society and the impor­ tance of recording our history update.

He asked for permission to represent the Society at the Western Fraternal Life Association Convention (WFLA) in Grand Rapids in August. The motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska was unanimously adopted.

He stated he was looking forward to attending the District III Youth Camp. He commented on the pleasure of conducting the meeting because of the good work being done by the Board members for the good of the Society.

President Leshikar reported on four applicants for the position of State Youth Director (SYD) and reviewed the applications.

The selection process for filling the position of SYD was discussed. It was agreed that the vacancy be advertised in the Vestnik. Target date for the selec­ tion was July 25th. It was decided that all applications will be furnished to the Board with a recommendation from the president. An interview date and time will be set to allow directors the opportunity to meet with the recommended ap­ plicant.

There was a discussion about some type of recognition for a member who at­ tained age 100.

The recommended salary was not to exceed $16,500 depending on qualifica­ tions. The salary range was approved on motion by Director Vanek, seconded

by Vice President Gebala and it carried unanimously.

He invited everyone to the District I YAD on August 4 and at he Caldwell Kolache Festival.

Legal Advisor Kacir announced that the By-Law Committee was working toward setting its first preconvention meeting for early November.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK - He reported that all securities were accounted for during safe deposit box audit of securities.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladník adjourned the meeting at 1 :55 p.m.

He brought up rules pertaining to the SPJST King and Queen. After discussion, on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, it was decided that the president prepare for consideration in the October meet­ ing rules of conduct for the contestant and winner of State Royalty and all youth involved in the youth program. Carried unanimously.

He complimented Director Vanek on the good job he is doing in assisting with planning of the Convention.

There was a discussion about the fact that a number of Home Office personnel. hold local lodge and Standing Committee positions and it was determined that the By-Laws do not prohibit this practice.

He invited all to attend the District II YAD. DIRECTOR BROZ - He complimented Director Vanek on his part in conven­ tion planning and the Supreme Lodge officers on their reports.

He reported for the Audit Committee and stated the books were found to be in order with the exception of what they reported as excessive phone calls.

He asked for status report from President Leshikar about completing the SPJST History Update prior to the XXVI Convention. President Leshikar responded that the update is underway and would be completed.

He discussed the need for the SPJST to consider changing its name to better ap­ peal to non-Czech individuals.

DIRECTOR HANUS - He discussed sales seminars and recommended full Use of visual aids.

He asked for additional information to be included on the sales representative' s card when a certificate is issued. He asked for information on how cash con­ venience/money market accounts are used. He asked for information about cut­ ting expenses and it was stated that total expenses were cut the previous year by some 6 percent.

DIRECTOR VANEK - He informed the Board that the sales representatives in District VI had just completed a sales contest with good results.

He discussed the good job and amount of contacts the District VI field repre­ sentative had made and recommended that a special bonus be considered for the

From The State FAC SPJST Czech Fest The SPJST Czech Fest will be held Sunday, September 22, 1991 at Bell County Expo Center in conjunction with Bell County Fair in Belton, Texas.

The.fair will have exhibits from.NASAplus a carnival and other exhibits.

The feature events for SPJST will include a lot of polka and waltz dancing with music by the Vrazels' Polka Band of Buckholts-Cameron and the Czech Harvesters' Band from Dallas, with a polka-waltz contest open to the public.

A feature will also be the GermanFolk Dancers from New Braunfels who will perform several German dances and also two- Czech dances. You will not want to miss this great group of dancers.

A noon meal will be available from 11 :00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and the sale of coffee and kolaches will continue throughout the afternoon with .all profits going to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

The $3.50 gate fee covers all dancing, entertainment and viewing of the Central Texas Fair. Food and carnival rides are at an extra cost.

The youth clubs are invited to sell crafts, candy, pastries and popcorn. They will have one table furnished per youth club on which to put their sale· items.

Please notify the Youth Department at the Home Office if you will need a table.

At a recent sales workshop held in Rowena; Sales Representative Diana Pelzel of Lodge 160, San Angelo, was recognized as successfully completing the Quick-Start II Training Program.

The presentation was made during the class by SFM Gene McBride.

Quick-Start II was initiated to assist our sales representatives in gaining an advanced knowledge of sales techni­ ques which they can use to procure new members for our Society. This is an innovative training program ad­ ministered by our field force to en­ hance training for our sales representatives in accordance with the SPJST Goals and Objectives estab­ lished in 1990.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Celebrates Family Day Dear Members: Our lodge held its annual Family Day on Sunday, July 14, 1991 at St. Mary's Hall with a good attendance.

The hall was decorated in red, white

and blue. The covered tables held centerpieces made by the youth club members assisted by their parents.

Refreshments were served starting at noon. A delicious catered meal of bar­ becue brisket and sausage, German potatoes, green beans, corn, peaches and pickles was served at 12:30 p.m., with Kathryn Woytek saying the bless­ ing before the meal. A large variety of delicious desserts brought by the mem­ bers were enjoyed.

Following the meal, President Annie Vahalík called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone.

The regular reports were dispensed with. Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy introduced our guests, namely: Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and District VI Director Matt Vanek; also Joseph Jansky, who will be 98 years young on his next birthday. FAC Gaye Galetka made her report.

The 50-year members for 1991 were recognized and presented their pins.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: Since the Labor Day weekend falls on the first Sunday in September, Lodge Karel Jonáš will hold its Sep­ tember monthly meeting on the second Sunday, the 8th.

In the August monthly meeting, held on the first Sunday, the 4th, we went into a "Committee of the Whole" and discussed several questions which could be beneficial to the local lodge as well as the society as a whole.

There was no resolve to these ques­ tions but a further discussion will be held in the next meeting.

There was enough food for the luncheon, during the fraternal hour, that those present could go back for seconds and thirds with still some left over. For all of this donated food, thanks go to all persons who took the time to do this, for the luncheon.

On another subject, this writer was informed that the Czech National Cemetery Association will hold its fall semi-annual meeting on the third Sun­ day, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the "Community Room" of the East Ber­ nard Annex of the Wharton County Library at 750 Clubside Drive on the south side of East Bernard. There will be an election of officers for the ensu­ ing year. Lodge No. 35, Elk (August 11, 1991 Meeting) Our President Henry Breitkreutz brought the meeting to order.

The pledge was led by Waylon Cal­ laway and Christopher Pavelka.

Verna Pavelka gave the treasurer's report.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported about the cake walk, our fund-raisers and attendance. She spoke of Westfest activities coming up on August 31 parade and August 29 party to decorate for the float, what our theme will be and that we would all wear our matching camp T-shirts. For the August 29 party, everyone need to bring a sack supper, a snack for · everyone and youth club will furnish the drinks. Everyone needs to pay $2.50 towards our pizza lunch the day of the Westfest parade, and we will buy lunch for Mr. White who will be pulling our float for us. The youth club is saving sodawater tabs for the Kid­ ney Foundation; State Royalty set for

August 17 in Cyclone and State YAD on August 18 in Temple; also Youth Festival in Seaton on September 21, and Fraternal Fest on September 22 at the Expo Center in Belton. The youth door prize was won by Waylon Cal­ laway.

Sunshine Committee reported that, after surgery, Willie Adamek was doing fine.

Included in President Reese's report was the break-in repair estimate and future repair of the damage also, the eligibility committee has continued its work on the election roster.

FAC Ruth Hanusch reported that vol­ leyball teams will be organized with practices to begin soon. CPR classes are tentatively set for sometime in September. The Supreme Lodge has started a "100. Pennies Drive" for scholarships. Sister Ruth reminded everyone to consider nominee(s) for "Fraternalist of the Year;" deadline is November 1st. She invited everyone to State YAD and Royalty. The Czech Fest is September 22 at the Bell Coun­ ty Expo Center. This year at the dis­ trict level there will be a needlecraft contest, this includes any kind of needle work. The District II fall meet­ ing is in Taylor.

All chairpersons' reports were satis­ factory.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported 33 members, 3 visitors and 3 adults present. She talked about Dis­ trict II YAD and camp. August 14 will be a swim party at Walker Pool.

District II Director Willie E. Kohutek stated that smaller sales semi­ nars are needed. The seminar for Lodge 47 is September 10 at Star Hall.

President Elizabeth Walther brought the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and conducted the proper sequence of busíness.

Fifty-year membership pins will be presented Friday, September 20 at our regular game night. The five recipients are Carmen Louise Block, Julius Holubec, Melton Holubec, Margaret Lanu Humes and Mable Loika Malone.

The lodge will furnish roast beef gravy and creamed potatoes. Members and friends are asked to bring side dishes that go with this menu; cole slaw salad will be furnished by Beverly Teplicek, Bernice Leone and Pauline Shiller. Lula Maracek and Elizabeth Urbanek volunteered to bake the briskets. Our lodge hall will be opened at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 8:00 p.m, Sunshine Committee Chairman Pat Tomlinson sent get well cards to Julie Lisso and Minnie Pavlicek. District Director Stanley Broz gave an informative report on the Supreme Lodge and local lodge businesses.

Door prize winners were Eddie Mae Huebner and Elizabeth Urbanek. Both donated their prize money to the Birthday Fund, which is used to purchase the meat dish for special occasion dinners.

The progressive grand prize award dinners are eligible only if they attend meetings. The November grand prize will be $40.00 President Walther started the prize by donating $10.00 of her own money. The May and August winners were not present to collect their prizes, so the money was put back in the pot.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: We were somewhat busy these past few weeks. First, we bad our Annual Tarok Tournament which I will write about later and now we are busy get­ ting things in order for the Czech Heritage Day - September 14th.

An affair of this type takes quite a lot of time getting things planned for the full day which will be on a Saturday with different contests and various kinds of entertainment. As always, things of this nature, we want every­ thing to be in order so all our friends and members will have a good time.

In addition to our entertainment, there will be two famous dance bands providing music; first, the Jodie Mikula Band from Ennis will be play­ ing in the afternoon and, at night, the Texas DutchmenBand from Houston.

There will be a reasonable charge for a full-day of entertainment: $6.00 for all day and both dances, but dinner ticket is extra - $5.50 per adult and $3.50 per child under 13 years of age.

Where else but at an SPJST lodge can you get prices like these?

We hope the weather will cooperate with us on that day with plenty of sun­ shine; anyway all the activities will be indoors so rain shouldn't keep anyone away. Please plan to attend this wonderful day with all your friends.

Our meeting held on August 11 had about an average attendance but the July meeting was longer due to the ·readingof the local Rules and Regula­ tions. This time our secretary had lengthy minutes to read.

As always, the officers gave good reports, and the meal afterwards was very good. This.was prepared by Joyce Tesar, Frankie Tesar, Mary Ann Krivanek and also some help from their family members. The pastries were good as always, but we have to give credit to Sister Anna Lesikar for a very good strudel. The other ladies who brought pastries were also wonderful.

After our business meeting, the youth club, with the District III Queen and Duchess performed the acts they were to perform at State YAD. They were very good and, of course, much success and good luck was wished to both of them.

Members who were not feeling too well last month seem to be better and we are glad for the improvement they have made.

The birthday song was sung to mem­ bers who were present and had birthdays in August.

More information will be written about the past tournament we had and we hope to have pictures also in the Vestnik,

Lodge 130, Dallas Beseda Dancers Attend Folklife Festival The 20th anniversary of the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio was held in grand-style the weekend of August 1-4, 1991. The hot weather "dampened" spirits some, but the ex­ citement was still there. Dancers who attended were David and Kelli Hlavenka with Josh, Jill and Jeremy; Ken and Suzanne Vrla and Julie; Stan­ ley and Martha Vrla and granddaughter, Karen Boylan; Gene and Rose Parma and granddaughter, Lisa Wilson and Keith and Nancy Shinn. And we were especially pleased that Brother Arnold Vrla was able to attend and serve as our announcer once again, along with Beseda Direc­ tor Martha Vrla. The dancing was very enthusiastic and well-received by our audiences. Several of our members also attended to cheer us on -- Teresa and John Boylan and children, John, Chris, Elizabeth and Sara; Scott and Lisa Parma and daughter, Jennifer and Pat Wilson, to name a few.

Very pleasant news reached us while we were there -- the arrival of Bryce Jordan Brown, son of Kelley and Patti Brown. Bryce was born at Presbyterian Hospital on Saturday, August 3 at 9:03 a.m. and weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

Proud grandparents are Richard and Helen Brown, and great-aunt and uncle Stanley and Martha Vrla. Welcome, Bryce! We'll have you dancing just real soon.

But it really doesn't seem safe to be named "Vrla" anymore. Brother Stan­ ley Vrla is recuperating from ortho­ scopic surgery on his knee. Sister Helen Vrla is doing very well after her hip surgery in June and so is Brother Arnold Vrla after his; both have a little way to go to be 100 percent, but it won't be long now.

Several invitations to perform have been extended to the Beseda dancers this fall -- Yukon, Oklahoma on Oc­ tober 5, State Fair of Texas on October 6, Mercedes-Benz on October 17, and Traders Village (not sure· of the date yet). So rehearsals will be resuming quite soon.

Our September meeting will be held on the 10th of the month at 7:30 p.m. at Lodge No. 84. Rehearsal will be held after the meeting. Hope to see more of our members there.

At 7:30 p.m. Brother Jerry Dressler, president, called the meeting to order in Czech and English and called on Brother Alvin Sefcik to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the USA, and a moment of silent prayer for the deceased brothers and sisters was held.

Roll call of officers was held and all were present except Sister Louise Wil­ lis, financial secretary, who had heart surgery. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Brother Erwin Theiss, FAC, thanked everybody for helping and donations for the "Rose Benefit," which was a huge success.

President Dressler introduced all the District V officers and stated we were glad they stayed for the meeting. Then he asked Brother Louis Hanus, District V director; Sister Evelyn Mikeska, District V president; Sister Helen Heg­ wood, SFR, to give reports.

We had the reading of all lodge reports, which were good to hear, then we had all our business conducted.

Hlahol Dramatic Club News It has been some time since you heard anything from the HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB of Lodge No. 88, Houston.

You may be sure that it is not like it was years ago when. Czech operettas were performed; it has also 'been two or three years since an English play was presented on the stage.

Times have changed and, although the club has been in a dormant stage, let it be known that the members of longstanding have not allowed it to be considered a thing of the past.

A meeting was called to order on August 5, and considering the pros and cons of the matter, it was finally unan­ imously decided that the club would present a talent show rather than at­ tempting to present a stage play.

So I shall ask you to make a note on your calendars and set aside the after­ noon of September 29, to enjoy a show unlike any you have seen at Lodge 88.

There will be no admission fee; this show will be open to members and their invited relatives and friends. We intend to enjoy seeing members and friends whom we have not seen in years, and further, there will be ham­ burgers with the usual delicious trim­ mings, however, at a price.

We know there is a great deal of

talent among the members, and the young people, especially, are eager to do their best to entertain you.

Ladies Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth Our Ladies Circle Lodge No. 92 meeting on August 13 opened with a lively rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," a most appropriate song for America's favorite summer­ time game.

President Clara Cohen introduced our guest, Sharon Gibson. Clara Mar­ chioni read the humorous "Calorie Prayer" and Anna Lesikar provided a "Prayer for the Soaps." Reading of the minutes followed by the treasurer's report were approved as read.

Get well cards were sent to Tillie Gillis and Eleanor Svacek.

Old Business: Jo Prochaska gave a price list for the pastry booth at the September 14 festival, which was ap­ proved. Volunteer workers include Florence Greer, Aurora Maldino and Clara Marchioni. Anyone who wants to help out is most welcomed.

New Business: Our president proposed a trip to West for our annual Thanksgiving outing. After much dis­ cussion, Mary Ann Gibson made a mo­ tion that we plan for this trip in November. It was seconded, voted on and approved. A chartered bus and possibly several cars will make the trip. Our president will finalize the details and report them at our next meeting.

Our September kitchen hosts reneged so we have some volunteers, namely: Laura Posival, Helen Kubala, Jo Prochaska and Florence Greer with a donation from Catherine Kosarek.

. . San Antonio Czech Choral Club News The San Antonio Czech Choral Club was on the road, again, and we enter­ tained residents at the Flatonia Nurs­ ing Home at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25th.

Our practice is still being held on the second Friday of each month.

This month we had a· real good bar­ becue supper, which was served at 7:00 p.m, Many thanks to our member, Joe Stryk, who insisted on making the barbecue and he outdid himself; it was very delicious.

Our projection for the coming months shows we are to sing at the rest home in New Braunfels and also at the nursing home in Floresville. SPJST Czech Class Lodge 88, Houston We completed our nineteenth, ten­ weeks' course of the study of Czech in May 1991. Intense interest is quite evi­ dent in our weekly class meetings at the lodge. Though 64 had registered for the sessions, an average of 53 at­ tended each class group. Surely, there must be something contagious in our schedule.

Our Czech class is very serious in learning all it can about the country of their ancestors. They participate in "show and tell" with lively interest, and find it satisfying to, again, hear the words and phrases used by their parents and grandparents. This summer six students, namely: Sydney and Jerry Voda, George Matsek, Lorraine Rod, Lillia Mae Peter and James Ermis visited the regions of their progenitors.

In August - Morris and Ann Jurecka, with her father, Henry Popelka, will leave for the CSFR. Also, this summer George Matsek will return to Brno. He is involved in the development of the Dallas-Brno student exchange pro­ gram. Effie and Bill Rosene are plan­ ning a month's travels in Czechoslovakia in September.

Of great interest were the several visits to our class by Olga Michalková of Prague. She visited the Rosenes several weeks this year. She has now returned to Prague enthused and ex­ cited with all she saw here in Texas.

Olga will, no doubt, transmit and reflect all the friendliness she observed here in the Lone Star State. (Stat osamele hvezdy)

Boundless energy characterizes the Czech students. The summer of 1992 includes a trip by Ed and Anna Krpec to Kozlovice, the birthplace of Ed's father, and there will be a return trip

by George Marsek. Jean and Frank Bravenec should have a rewarding trip to Koprivnice, the home of the Tatra Auto Works which celebrated its cen­ tennial year in April. Frank is the fourth generation of the founder. Fran­ ces Susil, Emil Thoede and Johnelle Moudry are finalizing August plans for a visit to Valasske Klobouky.

From Head of The Youth De~artment Antonin Dvorak Perhaps the greatest single Czech cultural contribution to western and, therefore, also the American civiliza­ tion is in the realm of _music. One may safely assert that the Czechs are better known and appreciated in this form of art than in any other, both as creators and as interpreters of it.

Antonin Dvorak easily occupies the first place among the Czech musical composers. Dvorak, moreover, is often called the father of American music because of his New World Symphony.

Even his Slavonic Dances have, in the meantime, gained access to the heart of Americans.

Dvorak was a well-trained musician well-aware of the vast progress in use of musical materials which had been made by composers of other lands. He was a master of the use of orchestral color, and the 'New World' symphony demonstrates his ability to mold the classical form to highly individual use.

To commemorate Dvorak's sojourn in Spillville, Iowa, a part of the main road near that town was named after him. Perhaps the acceptance of his cul­ tural contribution is a better memorial to him and to Czech musical genius.

P .S. Vyučovánía učení se českéřeči je nutné k zachování našeho národního dědictví tu ve Státu osamělé hvězdy, jelikož studiem češtiny se stává českoamerické studentstvo etnicky uvědomější. Toto studentstvo spolu s dalšími roduvěrnými krajany pak nedopustí, aby česká mluva se stala za 30 či 50 let tu v Texasu mrtvým jazykem, skončivším v muzeu. Čeština je slovanskýjazyk náležejícído slovan­ ské jazykové skupiny, která je největší v Evropě. Znalost českéhojazyka tedy usnadní studia všech ostatních slovan­ ských řečí. Studia češtiny jsou rovněž velmi vhodná pro všechny ty čechoameričany druhé, třetí či šesté g_enerace, chystající se navštívit Ceskoslovensko, když Stará vlast je konečně teď svobodná!

Morava viděná různými brýlemi.

Dnešní spis se skládá ze tři článlro, sepsaných ňa stejné velmi aktuální -téma, pro všechnynás původem z Moravy. Podívejme se nejprve na článek "Moravský problém" od Jaroslava Mezníka z Brna ve Staré vlasti, vytištěný22.dubna 1990 ve Ctvrtletníku "Proměny", vydávanémCeskosiovenskouspolečnostípro vědya umění, ve Flushingu, ve státě New Yorku. SpecialitouMezníkovačlánku je jeho rozdělení Moravanů na čtyři základní skupiny, které autor upravil umně tak, že cíl či poslání každé z nich chápe docela lehce každý čtenář.

Přečtěme si teď celý Mezník\\vMoravský problém.

Nečekaný úspěch Společnosti pro Moravu a Slezsko ve volbách z května 1990, kdy se její kandidátce podařilo hladce překročit pětipro­ centni klauzuli, ač·mohla počitat s větším počtem hlasů jen na Moravě, upozornil českou i zahraniční veřejnost na to, že k řadě problémů, které náš stát v současné době musí řešit, patří i otázka postavení Moravy a Slezska v rámci České republiky i celého československého státu. Pro toho, kdo sledoval činnost a ohlas uvedené Společnosti již y roce 1968; tento úspěch již tak zcela překvapivý nebyl.

Základ moravského problému tkví v dějinách. Morava je zvláštní geografický celek a tvořila v historické době také autonomní celek

správní a politický. V povodí Moravy a Váhu vznikl v 9. století první stát západních Slovanů - Velkomoravská říše. Od dvacátých let 11. století byla Morava součástí českého státu, ale zaujímala v něm samo­ statné postaveni, které bylo od konce 12. století zvýrazněno i názvem Markrabství moravské. V některých obdobích měla Morava i vlastní panovníky, kteři byli leniky českého krále, a v 15. století se dotvořila sa­ mostatná moravská stavovská obec s vlastním moravským zemským sněmem a zemským soudem. Obyvatelé Moravy se samozřejmě nazýva­ li Moravané. Současně ovšem existovalo vědomi, že Češi a Moravané tvoří jeden celek. Ve 14. století se utvořil v Čechách ina Moravě jednot­ ný spisovný jazyk, společný byl i vývoj literatury. Zvlášť v 16. století byl vklad Moravy do společné české kultury velmi významný- lze připo­ menout, že na Moravě vznikla Kralická bible, že z Moravy pocházel a většinu života zde žil Jan Blahoslav a že na Moravě byly sestaveny důle­ žité gramatiky českého jazyka. Také Jan Ámos Komenský se vždy hlásil k Moravě, i když pokládal Čechy a Moravany za jeden národ.

V 19. stoleti, v době národního obrozeni, se česky a moravskými dia­ lekty mluvící Moravané uvědomili jako příslušníci českého národa.

Přesto na Moravě nikdy nezaniklo silné moravské povědomí. Český na­ cionalismus a jeho vyústění-· vznik samostatného státu - však půso­ bily, že politická aktivita tohoto moravského povědomí slábla. Za první republiky přijali Češi na Moravě bez větších protestů omezení morav­ ské samosprávy a po roce 1945 moravští komunisté prosazovali společ­ ně se svými soudruhy z Čech zrušení zemského zřízení.

Jestliže už v roce 1968 a znovu po listopadu moravské vědomi ožilo a dostalo ivýrazně politický akcent, mělo to několik příčin. Tou základ­ ní bylo zrušení Země moravskoslezské z roku 1949. Krajským zřízením byla vlastně z map vymazána Morava- Moravané však zůstali. Správ­ ní reforma z roku 1960 pak nerespektovala ani historické hranice Mora­ vy; Dačicko, Svitavsko a Moravskotřebovsko připadly k českým kra­ jům, což bylo aje na Moravě pociťováno s trpkostí. Kromě toho odsu­ ·~em Němců odpadl pro Čechy z Moravy jeden z motivů, který je dříve vedl k úsilí o co nejužší spojení s Čechami: ačkoliv na Moravě žilo po­ měrně méně Němců než v Čechách, měli zde silnější pozice, zvláště ve větších městech, a Češi na Moravě se potřebovali opírat o Čechy z Čech.

V posledních desetiletích navíc v českých zemích, podobně jako vjiných evropských zemích, ustoupily národní vědomí a nacionalismus v myšle­ ní lidí poněkud do pozadí. Do popředí vstoupily spíše regionální a teri­ toriální zájmy, na Moravě posilované i odporem proti pražskému cen­ tralismu a 'některými hospodářskými disproporcemi, pociťovanými zvláště jižní Moravě (i když tyto hospodářské a finanční disproporce často zavinili moravští funkcionáři). Působilo i to, že komunisté zničili. některé masové organizace, které i na Moravě české národní vědomí pěstovaly, v prvé řadě Sokol.

Současné obyvatelstvo Moravy a Slezska neni ve vztahu k moravské otázce jednotné. Zhruba lze rozeznávat čtyři základni skupiny: Části obyvatel Moravy je moravská otázka lhostejná nebo jí nepři­ kládají velký význam; u některých obyvatel působí i užší regionální zájmy (zvláště na Jihlavsku a na Zlínsku). Politickým mluvčím tohoto směru jsou některá grémia Občanského fóra. "Nemoravský" nebo do­ konce "antimoravský" směr je rozšířenější mezi inteligencí než v ostat­ ních vrstvách obyvatelstva, geograficky je asi nejsilnější na západě a se­ veru Moravy. Specifická situace je ve Slezsku, kde existuje- i když ne příliš rozšířené - slezské teritoriální vědomí se snahou obnovit Zemi slezskou.

Druhou skupinu tvoří umírnění Moravané. Pokládají se za Čechy ži-' jící na Moravě. Jejich program je obnovení Země moravské (nebo mo­ ravskoslezské) v rámci České republiky, ale to není pro ně program je­ diný; stejně důležité a většinou ještě důležitější je pro ně obnoveni demo­ kratického života a fungující ekonomiky, případně urychlené řešeni ekologických a sociálních problémů v celém Československu. Stoupen­ ce tohoto směru najdeme na Moravě všude a ve všech politických stra­ nách a hnutích, ovšem s výjimkou hnutí radikálně moravských a mo­ ravskonacionálních; velmi početně jsou zastoupeni mezi příslušníky starších generací. Umírněnost jejich postojů a zaměření na jiné otázky současného vývoje vysvětluje, proč je tento směr v diskusích o Moravě

nejméně slyšet, i když má hodně přívrženců.

V ~rotikladu · těchto tvrzení stojí otevřené se připojení k prohlášením Jinak je tomu u radikálních Moravanů. Obnova Moravy (či Země MLCÍCÍCH MORA VANÚ, které podepsalo a do redakce zaslalo 33 vyučujících moravskoslezské) je pro ně hlavním cílem, vše ostatní je vedlejší. Při­ gymnázia Přerov. Pro blaho Moravy uděláme více svou poctivou prací, než ho národa. Nacionalističtí Moravané se od radikálních Moravanů liší především tím, že se pokládají za příslušníky zvláštního moravského národa. Poža­ dují pro Moravany stejná práva, jako mají nebo získávají Slováci. Hlas Moravanů nezní UNISONO! Jak složitá a stále neuzavřená je otázka moravské svébytnosti dokazují vRné diskuse na toto téma. Každý z nás se cítí být Moravanem jinak a každý z nás uznává i svou vlastní představu o uspořádání státu s postavením Moravy uprostřed naší země. Diferencovanost názorů dokládají rozdílná stanoviska, která se sešla v těchto dnech na redakčním stole.

Moravanu není unisono!

Okresní středisko Hnutí za samosprávnou demokracii - Společnost pro Moravu a Slezsko, zaslalo Ceskoslovenské televizi Praha otevřený dopis, v němž se mimo jiné praví: Zástupcům Moravy se dostalo velké cti, mohli promluvit z pražského studia ke svým spoluobčanům a jejich otevřené názory se roznesly pro­ střednictvím CST do všech koutů naší vlastí-c- Za co se Moravě dostalo takového privilegia? Zdá se vám to neskutečné? To se skutečně událo. Musíte si pouze zvolit správný okamžik a prohlášení žádoucího obsahu. Tou správnou dobou se rozumí nejlépe okamžiky před závažnými rozhodnutími v CNR, v tomto případě před rozhodnutím v otázce státoprávního uspořádání. Připouští se prohlášení v duchu oficiálního názoru, coby přátelská výpomoc mocnému partnerovi. Dere se na jazyk - chce se říci - na objednávku. Při splnění těchto požadavků se pak dočkáte široké publicity i pod pseudonymem "MLCici MORA VANÉ---". Dále se z otevřeného dopisu dočítáme, že: "Páni doktoři, rektor a primátor města Olomouce se nechali zřejmě inspirovat slovenskými kolegy -- umělci, kteří vystoupili na obranu celistvosti státu při událostech okolo 14. března 1991. Ve svém zá_palu přehlédli jisté rozdíly mezi slovenskou a moravskou otázkou. Pokud "MLCICÍ MORA VANÉ" vydávají prohlášení celostátního významu, pak jim doporučujeme nejprve nastudovat program našeho hnutí, neboť HSD-SMS usiluje o samosprávu Moravy, nikoliv o Moravský stát, jak je nám přisuzováno.

Takovéto prohlášení je pak důkazem spíše umělecké licence, než politické zralosti."

Tolik z otevřeného dopisu, který okresní středisko HSD - SMS Přerov zaslalo CST Praha, jíž viní z nedostatku objektivity a nestrannosti a postoupilo redakci Přerovska.

Uvedené noviny Pražský Večerník ze 7. května jsem si koupil v Praze, kam jsem jel ve čtyři hodiny ráno z Přerova rychlíkem chtíc být už po deváté ráno na Ceskosl. ústavu zahraničním promluvit si s p. ing. Opatrným jak o výuce češtiny v Texasu tak o studiu češtiny američanů v Praze, a o dalších etnických záležitostech.

Clověk míní, Pán Bůh mění---. Byl jsem přijat ing. Zdeňkem Šimerkou (později se k nám připojila Dr. Helena Landovská), který mi zdělil, že ing. Lad. Opatrný, který povýšil po sametové revoluci na vedoucí osobnost CUz, je a bude zaneprázněn celý den---.

Po návratu domů do Texasu mi pak několik přátel řeklo, že. odezva v esu na mou návštěvu by byla úplně jiná, mluvil-li bych tam alespoň částečně anglicky.

Rovněž prý i má tam zmínka, že jsem osmačtyřicátník, žijící 43 roky v anglicky mluvících zemích, by též celé záležitosti jen prospěla!

o vrabečkovi.

Jednou poletoval mladý vrabčák pod· vesnicí u plotů. Ještě měl žluté koutky a slabá křidélka, že se nemohl vznést a uletět. Patrně spadl někde s hnízda. Vesničtí hoši ho chytli a darovali našim.

Měli jsme zbytečnou klec, pustili jsme vrabčfka do ní a zavěsili ji v zahradě na švestku. Jak se vrabčfk oz­ val v kleci, že má hlad, naši vrabci to uslyšeli -- a to jste měli vidět! Kde který byl, každý mu něco přinesl v zobáku a podával do klece. Na noc věšívali jsme klec do předsíně, aby vrabčfkovi nebylo zima, a kdyby pršelo, aby nez­ mokl. Staří vrabci časně ráno ho i tam našli a nakrmili jako svého.

U žádného ptáka nezpozoroval jsem tolik soucitu. Nechali jsme vrabčfka několik dní v kleci. Naši vrabci tak

srdečně ho krmili a pomáhali mu, že jsme se podivili. Když jsme ho pustili, vzletěl už statně na švestku, a proto jsme se již o něho nestarali. Ten se už neztratí!

Tato obětavost a láska vrabčího národa tak nás dojala, že od té doby máme vrabce ještě raději, než jsme mívali.

Reunion Pavelka Reunion The annual Pavelka reunion will be held on Sunday, September l, 1991 at the SPJST Lodge No. 35 Hall in Elk, Texas. Lunch will be served at noon and we ask all to bring food. Plates, napkins, etc. will be furnished by the family. After lunch, social games will be played and prizes will be needed.

Sons of The Desert will play from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. We look forward to a bigger and better reunion and hope to see everyone there.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival, In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
