Some of the well-known companies have been covering many preventive tests for years, figuring .that early detection could save billions of dol­ lars. Blue Cross now agrees. It asked the American College of Physicians, a group of doctors of internal medicine, to suggest tests that should be covered and who should get them. The result­ ing guidelines, jointly issued recently, recommend that people with no known health risks have their blood pressure checked every one to two years and their cholesterol every five years.

Women over 40 should get an annual check up.

Under the guidelines, you wouldn't see the doctor as often as some other medical organizations think you should. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, for example, suggests that women with no personal or family history of cancer have tests made between ages 35 and 40, or 10 to 15 years before Blue Cross recommends. So even if you opt for the new coverage, discussing your test schedule with your doctor makes sense. You also may not need to buy the option every year. If family mem­ bers are not due for any tests in a given year, there's no reason to sign up. But if a family needs, say one mammogram, two cholesterol checks and two blood-pressure monitorings in one year, the cost could easily exceed $200, making the $90 annual fee worthwhile. Most other insurers will study the Blue Cross decision, so even non-members may be able to add preventive screening to their health coverage this year.

NFCA Celebrates Flag Day On Ellis Island

ON JUNE 14 AT ELLIS ISLAND. the immigrants brought with them.

At 7:00 p.m. all joined with millions of Americans in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

For dinner a stew, derived from a recipe used during peak immigration years, was served. Each participant received a commemorative poster and a souvenir bag filled with patriotic items donated by member societies.

Nearly 1,000 fraternalists from throughout United States gathered together on Ellis Island on June 14, 1991 to honor the nation's flag and to pay tribute to the millions of im­ migrants who came to America pursu­ ing dreams of freedom, opportunity and prosperity.

From 1892 until 1954, Ellis Island served as processing center for more than 17 million immigrants. Almost half of all Americans today can trace their ancestry to someone who entered this country at Ellis Island.

"Fraternalists have long expressed their patriotism to the United States by the recognition and celebration of Flag Day," said National Fraternal Congress of America President W. Patrick Don­ lin. "We have also had a major role in espousing the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance through which we for­ mally recognize our flag and country."

Lodge No. 29, Taylor Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29 held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, July 7, 1991 at 4:00 p.m. with Presi­ dent Melvin Steger presiding. He also led the members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained stand­ ing for a few moments of silence for our deceased members Ben Schernik and Annie Pish.

The minutes of our last meeting were read and accepted.

The treasurer's report was also accepted as given.

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek gave her report. They will attend camp this month and for their August social, they will go to Schlitterbahn in New Braun­ fels.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, August 11 at 4:00 p.m. Please join us.

Sister Mary Pavey reported on cards and flowers sent.

A thank you note was read from Sister Henrietta Milan for the flowers.

We're happy to report she is doing well and that all our sick are on the move, again.

Sister Carrie Milan reported a large group of youth were ready for camp.

(Sister Carolyn Cleveland was at work.) They always come home, so ex­ cited and we will hear all that went on.

Brother Milan reported on our Plant­ a-Tree; anyone who would like to give a tree in memory or the living. We have had several to sign up. The trees will be planted on our grounds.

We enjoyed having Pat Dentrem. On her way home from South Texas, she stopped in West and was given a Vestnik. She enjoyed it and got my name from my article and called me wanting to know more about the SPJST. I mentioned our meeting to be July 14 and asked if she would like to come. She was grateful for the invita­ tion. Brother Milan briefed her and took her on a tour of the building. She was impressed. She's Czech and is working on genealogy. She was in­ vited to come any time.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Sid and Sister Justine Poklad­ nik who were honored at Lodge No. 84 for their 57th anniversary. May you have many more.

Sister Jeanie Mason just called and said she helped with getting the youth off yesterday and that there were 18 youth.

Sister Frances Mamula of South Bend, Indiana and her daughter, Sister Melissa and her fiancee spent a wonderful week with all the Milan family.

Brother Rome and Sister Mila Milan, Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to have her mother, Vlasta Waldouf, in order by our president, Brother Jerry their home waiting for the arrival of Milan. He and Sister Henrietta Milan their first baby. Vlasta is from Canada.

Brother Milan made welcome Pat Anna Johnson' s famous birthday cake Dentrem and Jewell Clark, and then as "Happy Birthday" went out to Sisters Jeanie Mason, Rose Steinman, led us to the Pledge to our flag.

Lodge No. 177, Academy The Lodge 177, Academy June meet­ ing was held June 26th. Due to workmen working on our dance floor, the meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. (The June and July meetings will be reported together).

Libbie Bartek sent get well cards to Jean Oriska, Phil Weadock and Wel­ don Bland.

Louis Oriska reported on Jean's con­ dition and the lodge sure misses Jean at our meetings. Phil Weadock was present and looking good. Louis Oris­ ka also suffered a fall and broke .hís ribs. Irene Johnson returned to our June and July meetings and is doing fine.

A donation of $225.00 was given to the Little River-Academy Fire Depart­ ment; $100.00 to Texas Department of Human Services, and a $100.00 dona­ tion to the Piano Fund.

New members were David Marcie and Martin Turner.

Twenty-one members were present at our July meeting.

Ellison High School in Killeen will be allowed to have a chemical free dance on December 6th.

All chairpersons' reports were good.

An alcohol free dance will be held July 26; the admission will be $3.00 and kitchen will also be open.

Lodge No. 185, New Braunfels Annual Picnic Hill Country Lodge 185 members met at Preiss Heights Park on the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels on June 20, 1991, for the annual lodge picnic.

Both adult and youth members, as well as invited guests, enjoyed swim­ ming and socializing. A delicious bar­ becued rib, hot dog and potluck dinner was served.

This being a social gathering, a brief business meeting was held. President Roy Haag called the meeting to order.

Treasurer. Ernest Jasek reported on lodge funds. There was no secretary's report and no correspondence was read.

A special thank you was expressed to Mr. James McDonald for the use of the Preiss Heights picnic area. In addition to Mr. McDonald, guests included Joan, Barry, Sarah, Chase and Jared Jaroszewski.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Birthday Club On July 10, the Lodge 88 Birthday Club met in the lodge dining room for our monthly meeting.

President Lowrina Lindemann opened the meeting at 11: 15 a.m. with the roll call. Our attendance was small, which can be understood, since many are on vacation and it' s too hot for some to get out. (I don't like the heat either.)

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were accepted as read. Rita also had a reading entitled "Some Good In All." Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the finan­ cial report, which we are so proud of.

We've had a very good six months and are hoping we can continue to do well.

President Lowrina Lindemann asked how we liked Ryan's Steakhouse, and all applauded to say they enjoyed it.

Mary Kosut gave· the sunshine report which was well presented; it's nice for someone to remember our ailing sisters because we are sometimes prone to neglect, although we do think about them and have them in our prayers. Thank you, Mary.

Our own Treasurer Lillie Spies is leaving on July 13, 1991 for London.

This is how all this came about: her daughter Aggie and husband, Joe Foster, from London are here on a business trip, and Aggie is determined to take her mother with her for a couple of weeks. Lillie says her children have arranged a trip to Czechoslovakia while she's there. I hope Lillie will have a good time be­ cause she's on Cloud 9. Lillie is very important to us in the Birthday Club, and will be missed. .

Our known sick are Harriet Allison, who fell and is in the Heights Hospital, Birdie Pech and husband, John Pech, are in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville. Birdie has been sick which weakened her, so that put her in a wheelchair. Mrs. Anna Svestka has been in the hospital but, as of now, may be at home. She's one of our oldest members. Mrs. Frances Dvorak, who lives in Norman, Oklahoma wrote me a sweet letter, but never complains.

Always says, "My children are so good to me." Here is her address: 1010 Thistlewood Drive Norman, OK 73072 It being so extremely hot, we have a hard time getting cooks, so it was decided to have another dinner at Ryan's Steakhouse on our next meet­ ing August 7 and sandwiches on the second Wednesday, August 14, 1991.

Those who volunteered to bring cakes for August 14 are Flo Orsak, Rosalee Kostom, Willie Mae Stang, Rita Alexander, Lillie Spies and Lowrina Lindemann.

There being no further business, the Calcutta game was won by Inez Jeanes and Helen Hegwood.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to 10 celebrants.

1. On March 7, 1850, Thomas Masaryk was born in Hodonin, a Moravian town, to a poor coachman and his wife, a former serving maid.

Thomas Garrigue Masaryk was a great man, a great thinker and a great leader.

Professor of philosophy and sociology at Charles University for more than a generation, he became the liberator and creator of the only real democracy' in central and eastern Europe at that time.

During his years of moral and political leadership he probably came closer to being a wise philosopher-ruler than any leader who lived since Plato first set up his high ideal.

Masaryk's growth to greatness began at the bottom. As a youth, the poor youngster was apprenticed to a blacksmith, but his great intellectual drive im­ pelled him to leave the trade and undergo study at an Austrian gymnasium. He succeeded brilliantly and came out first in the class.

Then he studied at the Philosophical division of the University of Vienna, where he received his Ph. D. in Philosophy in 1876. When, in 1882, the old Charles University in Prague established a Czech and German branch, he was appointed to the new chair of philosophy and sociology at the Czech branch.

He held this position for thirty-two years and, at one time or another, taught most of the leading Czech philosophers, social scientists and teachers who were to become leaders in the new republic.

Fro01 District Youth Counselors Dime Box To Host District I YAD Dear Readers, District I will be holding their annual YAD on August 4, 1991. This event will be hosted by Lodge No. 13, Dime Box. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. · and last until 11 :30 a.m. A fried chicken lunch will be served beginning at 11 :00 a.m. A one-piece plate will be available for $2.00 and a ž-piece meal for $3.50. The meal will include mashed potatoes, green beans, a hot roll and iced tea. Desserts will also be available at a cost of 50 cents. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a call to order. Competition will begin shortly thereafter.

Individual and Group Talent will be followed by a 30-minute break. Royal­ ty competition will then fellow. I feel we will be finished with competition

and crowning of our 1991 Royalty by 5:30 p.m. or soon after. I have received YAD cards and, from viewing them, it looks like we are in for a full day of entertainment.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you at our YAD. It will prove to be a day of fun and excitement not only for the participants but for all in atten­ dance.

Youth Letters Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Happenings Dear Members, The Lodge 47 Youth Club meeting was called to order on Sunday, July 7 at 2:00 p.m. by President E.J. Pechal.

John Hoelscher led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Youth Club Pledge.

The register was read. There were 32 members, 6 adults and 4 guests present; guests were Samantha Mor­ rison, Jessica Kirby, Ferris Stark and Rachel. Baca. We were honored to receive a new member, Brian Glaser this month.

Secretary Lori Greger read the minutes of the last meeting. There were no corrections or additions. The minutes were approved as read. There was no correspondence. Treasurer John Hoelscher gave his report.

E.J. Pechal asked Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky to report. We have 3 of our members participating in Royal­ ty this year for YAD. Patsy asked Lori Greger, Laura Gibson and James Kor­ tis to present their speeches to youth club members and guests; all 3 did wonderful. They were also asked to present their speeches in front of the mother lodge when Patsy gave her report.

Patsy Koslovsky then went on to report on our youth club summer trip on June 28th and 29th. We spent the 28th at Six Flags and the 29th at Wet 'n Wild. Another trip coming up is our annual District II trip. This year Dis­ trict II youth clubs have decided to spend August 5th at Schlitterbahn. We will join District I later that day for dinner at the Bavarian Village.

District II YAD will be held on Sun­ day, July 14th in Cyclone Lodge No. 24. Our youth club has 28 kids par­ ticipating this year; of that, we have 62 craft entries alone, plus talent, royalty, and Beseda. Practice for talents and Beseda were held after the meeting and at various times throughout this upcoming week.

Camp for District II will be July 1824. Our youth club has 23 juniors, 8 LITs and 8 teens going to camp this year. Our theme for camp this year will be "Save the Earth," so think about this because the time comes near. · Our youth club is planning an annual swim party in August at Walker Pool.

vited. Bring a friend and snacks for the family.

Birthdays for the month of July are Secretary Lori Greger and active guest, Jessica Kirby.

News From Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club Dear Members, Our last meeting was held June 16 at 2:00 p.m. There were 11 members and 5 adults present. Jessica, Chris and Katy Rue are our new members. They attend St. Louis Elementary. We are happy to have you!

Under old business, the youth club won first place in the Moody Parade.

Under new business, a scrapbook meeting was set for June 10 and 11 at Gladys Yates' home.

We were reminded of YAD on June 23 at Cottonwood Hall with registra­ tion at 10:30 a.m.

Camp dates were set for July 15-18 at Camp Val Verde in McGregor.

Everyone was asked to bring 2 liter bottles and a gallon milk jug.

We are planning a trip to the Schlit­ terbahn on August 3rd. We will also have a back-to-school swimming party sometime this summer.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club News Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club and adults met June 20, 1991 at Preiss Heights Park in New Braunfels for the summer picnic. Everyone had a good time playing and swimming in. the river. Later, everyone enjoyed a supper of barbecued ribs, hot dogs and other food and desserts brought by each family.

Mrs. Haag reminded everyone that the District VII YAD would be July 7, 1991 in San Antonio. She added that registration would begin at 10:00 a.m.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee on behalf of SPJST Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi, wish to ex­ press our sincere sympathy to the sur­ viving family of EMMA SACKY MALEK, 74, of Corpus Christi, who passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1991 in a Kingsville hospital.

Born in Gainesville, Texas on August 26, 1916, she was a farmer' s wife and had worked on the farm most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Fred Malek in 1990; by three brothers, Louis, Frank and August Sacky; and two sisters, Be­ ssie Vrana and Georgia Dobecka.

Sister Malek was an SPJST member for more than-50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Lydia J. Bridges of Bishop, Texas and Patricia Franklin of San Diego, California; two sons, Bobby Malek of Corpus Christi and Lou Malek of Houston; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 4 at the Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, with her nephew, Father George Harris of San Benito, Texas officiating. Interment was in Seaside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Thiel was the daughter of the late Jan (John) and Rosalie Leshikar Janota. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and two sisters.

She attended Texas State College in San Marcos and the University of Texas. As a young girl, she taught school and later worked for an in­ surance company for 44 years.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Zasílání a převody peněz do české a slovenské federativní republiky Účelem této informace je orientovat zájemce o převod finančních prostředků do Československa tak, aby podle charakteru konkrétního případu mohli vybrat z daných možností optimální způsob transferu.

V Československu působí k dnešnímu dni 28 bank. Z nich níže uvedené čs. banky provádějí devizové operace: Československá obchodní banks, a.s., Praha 1, Na příkopě 14 Živnostenská banka, Praha 1, Na příkopě 20 Komerčníbanka, Praha 1, Na příkopě 33 Všeobecnáúvěrová banka, Bratislava, nám. SNP 19 Investičníbanka, Praha 1, Na příkopě 28 Agrobanka, a.s., Praha 1, Ve smečkách 33 Tatra banka, Bratislava, Vajanského náb. 5 SocieteGenerale-Komerčníbanka a.s., Praha 1, Vodičkova 34 Devizový zákon ukládá peněžnímu ústavu povinnost zřídit fyzické osobě na její žádost úročitelný devizovýúčet v dohodnuté měně. Tato povinnost je stanovena v návaznosti na další normu zmíněného zákona, jejímž ustanovenímj_e fyzickáosoba s trvalým pobytem v CSFR povinna devizové prostředky v hodnotě nad 5.000,­ korun uložit do 30 dnů od nabytí na devizovýúčet u peněžního ústavu nebo je nabídnout peněžnímu ústavu ke koupi za čs. měnu. Dispozice s účtem je bez jakýchkoliv omezení. Cizincům je protihodnota šeků likvidovánapodle jejich přání bez omezení. Pro uskutečnění bankovního převodu není podmínkou existence devizového účtu příjemce. Je plně dostačující učinit bankovní převod na finanční ústav s přímým označenímpříjemce (jméno + adresa), jenž bude po obdržení platby avizován. Poplatky za zůčtování šeku většinou činí 1 % z hodnoty šeku, avšak jen v rozmezí od 10,- do 300,- Kčs. Šeky vystavené v USA musejí být předloženy k proplacení do 70 dnů od jejich vydání. Jestliže šek nemá všechny náležitosti, např. je předložen po uplynutí platnosti, účtuje si zahraniční banka výlohy, které činí USD 25,- a více.

CESTOVNÍ ŠEKY Propláceny jsou za předpokladu, že je předkládá jejich vlastník, který před úředníkem banky provede kon­ trasignování. Obecně nelze tento způsob doporučit k zasílání peněžních částek jako darů. Pobočky Komerční banky proplacejí kontrasignované cestovníšeky předkládané čs. občanem pouze v případě, že obdarovaný spolu s šekempředloží dopis došlý ze zahraničí včetně obálky, z něhož je zřejmé, že šek obdržel jako dar a pokud podpis

autora dopisu se shoduje s kontrasignačním podpisem an cestovním šeku.

INTERNATIONAL MONEY ORDER (IMO) čs. obchodní banka proplácí peníze okamžitě po předložení International Money Order, pokud je tento peněžní doklad vystaven těmito bankami: -AMEXCO, -CITICORP, -MAN­ TRUST, -BOFA, -Royal Bank of Canada Živnostenská banka proplácí IMO svých zahraničních korespondentů, kterými jsou: -CITIBANK N.A., 399 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10022, -MANUFACTURERS HANOVER TRUST CO., 270 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 Tento peněžní ústav rovněž proplácí Personal Money Orders vystavené uvedenýmibankami.

OSOBNÍ ŠEKY Osobní šeky jsou propláceny až po provedení inkasa, které trvá cca 1

měsíc. Po této lhůtě, za předpokladu, že americká banka šek honoruje, proplácí čs. ústav· valutu okamžitě podle podmínek uvedených v úvodu. Investiční banka tento druh šeků nepřijímá. · Československá obchodní banka je schopna proplatit (obstarat inkaso) soukromých šeků všech amerických bank, které její klienti předloží. Doba inkasa trvá přibližně 1 měsíc.

Pokud jde o ostatní platební prostředky (VISA, MASTERCARD nebo DINERS CLUB), ty jsou propláceny ve vybraných prodejnách a Interhotelech, VISA a MASTERCARD I V POBOČK '\CH

LETECKÝCH SPOLEČNOST.Í Ve­ dle čs.bank lze devizovéúčty otěvřít i u některých poboček spořitelny, proto je vhodné zasílat šeky přímo příjemcům, kteří si mohou vybrat vhodný peněžní ústav podle vlastního rozhodnutí.

Diferencovanost v poskytovaném rozsahu a spektru finančních služeb, nastíněná vyše, je dána krátkou dobou, která uplynula od položení základů nového čs. bankovního systému. A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pro­ noun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language.

1. NOMINATIVE, or subject case: první pád- answers the questions: KDO- who? (is the doer of, or sub­ jected to, some action?); CO- what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?)

Ex.: KDO tam chodí? Karel tam jde.

Here Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schůze se tam koná. Here schůze is in the nom. case.

GENITIVE Case..c:.:.. druhý pád, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). Matěj Trouba styděl se za své rodové jméno a změnil je v německé jméno Traube. Stalo se, že jeho blízký příbuzný Jiří Trouba zemřel, zanechav značného jměni, Za dědice ustanovil ve své poslední vůli svého příbuzného Matěje Troubu. Ten hlásil se o dědictví pod jménem Traube. Soud neuznal ho za dědice, pokud nedokáže, že je Trouba a nikoli Traube. A pan Matěj Traube mnoho měl běhání, nežli dokázal, že je ten pravý Matěj Trouba.
