the bike, and falls, you praise them for "stick-to-it-iveness"for to chide would be to disillusion and foresake trying to master the riding of a bike.

And so it is, brothers and sisters, with adult members, for we are just grown boys and girls with much the same emotions as our young.

When your editor praises a group for its efforts to put on a meeting, a celebration, or whatever, even though he might have seen some place for im­ provement in the handling of the oc­ casion; still to find fault with their best efforts, would be to tear down ego, that which has been so pricelessly gained, the good-will, united effort, the brotherly feeling that went with it, self-discipline to follow the leaders and their plans. Why would anyone do that when recognition for these efforts, good-will and brotherly love will lift their spirits to even greater interest, ef­ forts and deeds in the future.

It has been proven, again and again, in lodges as well as in individuals, that where recognition for concerted effort was given, that that lodge, individual or officer began to take a greater inter­ est; visit other lodges and began to see and to learn better methods of doing things which were brought back to the respective lodge and which brought that particular lodge on a higher level of activity.

If a person will just study himself and the effect it has when praised by someone for something done (always the best of present ability) that person tried to do even better next time to warrant such praise and the lodge received the benefit of that effort.

Where good-will and honest effort fall short of perfection, praise your brother or sister for what they have done and they will do even better next time without your having to show up their weak points. Let us not be en­ vious of each other, there is no need for that, just roll up your sleeves higher and work a little harder.

As has been so aptly put, it is time the world and its men and women begin to recognize that not only must we be good to our immediate families, but that the whole world is one family.

Our lodges are families, also, and if a good word can lift them up to greater heights of willingness and effort, let us praise them. Isn't that good psychol­ ogy?

Notice To Members Of Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville Just a reminder to everyone that on Sunday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m., there will be a joint picnic of the SPJST Lodge No. 1 and the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill, which is about 3 miles north of Fayetteville on High­ way 159.

Hamburgers will be served "hot off the grill" and everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Dear Members and Friends: Seventeen members of Lodge No. 13, Dime Box met at the lodge hall on Sunday, July 7 for the combined June and July meetings.

President Ricky Ford called the meeting to order at 1 :00 p.m. The pledge to the flag was recited by all present.

Roll call of officers and trustees revealed thirteen present and three ab­ sent.

Secretary Dorothy Rackel read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Debbie Kostelka gave the treasurer's report. It was also approved as read.

Several letters of correspondence were read and taken care of.

The SPJST District I fall meeting will be held on September 29, 1991 at New Tabor Hall.

State Royalty and YAD will be held on August 17th and 18th.

District I YAD will be held August 4 at Dime Box. Sandwiches, chips, drink and dessert will be served for $3.00 per person.

Further and more detailed plans were discussed for the SPJST Picnic and St. Joseph's Bazaar which is to be held on our picnic grounds on Sunday, July 21, 1991. Barbecue chicken, red sausage and hamburgers will be available along with an afternoon of fun and games. Arts and crafts booths and food booths will be open· all afternoon, plus a dance at night by Texas Unlimited from 8:00 to 12:00 p.m.

July 20th has been set-up for setting up tables, benches and last minute cleanup for the picnic; be there at 8 o'clock in the morning when it is still cool.

A good number of members stayed to help cleanup and some cleaned the grounds and some the hall. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of work, fun and fellowship.

Our next meeting will be August 18th at 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there. The meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Lodge No. 47, Seaton Dear Readers: The July 7 meeting began with Presi­ dent Reese asking for the presentation of flags by Jennifer Reese and Mark Greger; the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The members continued with a moment of silent prayer for the loss of our member and friend, Johnny Palla.

In addition to 72 members, Gertrude Kahlig, Ann Balusek and Tammy Pechal were welcomed as visitors.

Good health is wished for Edna Vol­ dan, Judy Meyer, Clarence Lastovica and Leo Kahlig.

The roll call of officers, board mem­ bers, sales representatives and minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Dolores Skrabanek.

Welcomed as new members were Katherine Ann Hutchins, Rustin Jesse Jarnmillo and Josef Overmiller; Kindra and Michelle Mikeska were transfers.

Secretary of the Board Judy Pechal read the previous board meeting minutes.

Officers' reports followed.

President Reese read a letter from the Supreme Lodge which stated that be­ cause of increased insurance premiums from Star Hall (in accordance with Ar­ ticle 4 of the By-laws), one delegate/I 00 members is allowed for the 1992 convention.

President Reese also stated that the estimated damage of the July burglary was $1200-$1500.

FAC Ruth Hanusch reported that an ice cream social is scheduled for the July social night. Please, bring your favorite bought or home-made ice cream.

A CPR class may be scheduled in the near future. A cost of $25/person in­ cludes any necessary supplies. Contact Ruth Hanusch ASAP if interested.

Treasurer Lucy Mihatsch gave the monthly report as well as detailed in­ formation of the picnic. Hand-outs with specific expenses, profits, etc. of each booth could be viewed by the members. The results of the picnic were successful enough to warrant a vote in favor of holding a 1992 picnic.

Sister Mihatsch also stressed that throughout the year, please turn in any receipts (with items charged to Star Hall) as quickly as possible or the bill will be referred back to the member who incurred the bill. The Eligibility Committee includes Ruth and Lee Hanusch, Judy and Edwin Pechal, Joyce and James Skrabanek, Lucy and Ed Mihatsch, and Teresa and Johnny Klecka as well as Tim Reese, Dolores Skrabanek, Calvin Skrabanek and Woodrow Marek. The first meeting of the committee will be July 17, at 7:00 p.m.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reported there were 32 members, 4 visitors and 2 adults in attendance with Brian Glaser being the newest mem­ ber. She also reported and gave details on the upcoming July 14 YAD at Lodge 24, Cyclone, junior and teen camps at Camp Val Verde, District II trip to Schlitterbaun on August 5 and a youth club swim party at Walker Pool on August 14. Best of luck was wished to the royalty contestants who presented their speeches: James Kortis and Duke David Kortis, Lori Greger and Duchess Lisa Greger, and Laura Gibson and Duchess Sarah Hejl.

Happy birthday wishes to Gerome Orsag, Lonnie Schroeder, Dan Hejl, Vallie Zavodny, Willie E. Kohutek, Ginger Greger and Joe Sefcik.

Happy anniversary to Ruth and Lee Hanusch.

It was brought to attention that the Senior citizen members of Lodge 47

should be remembered on their birthdays; the FAC will develop this idea.

Door prize winners were Helen Janacek, David Pechal, Alice Banning and Wallace Jez. After Frank Klinkovsky led the members in the blessing, the meeting was adjourned and a mid-afternoon meal was served.

Lodge No. 160, San Angelo Sponsors Two Baseball Teams Lodge No. 160, San Angelo has once again sponsored two teams for the Wall Little League Association. The players and coaches of the association would like to extend a thank you to Lodge No. 160 for this.

Lodge No. 160 has sponsored a team for the past 5 years. In these few years, the organization has grown tremenous­ ly. Five years ago there were 3 teams.

Tbs year there were 9 teams that had 114 children playing for the Wall Lit­ tle League Association. Through the dedicated assistance of SPJST, it was made possible to have so many children involved. Thank you Lodge No. 160 for caring about the youth!

Lodge Jednota No.196, Houston - West The quarterly meeting was held April 28, 1991 at the Katy VFW Hall.

Several reports were given by officers.

Evelyn Mikeska gave a special report about the District V meeting that we hosted in March.

Eight new members have been ac­ cepted into our lodge. We are growing every month but we still need member involvement in lodge affairs.

The fraternal activities report was tallied and sent to the Supreme Lodge.

Members are asked to remember to keep a total of all activities throughout the year. It is extremely important for our society to keep track of these ac­ tivities and report them to the National Fraternal Congress.

The District V meeting will be held September 15, 1991 and our next quarterly meeting will be September 29, 1991 at the Katy VFW. Members are asked to bring a covered dish to share. We are also .remínded to bring our used eye glasses.

Our lodge has several young people to be very proud of this year. They have distinguished themselves in the ranks of graduates from college and high school.

Lee Ann Sommer, a previous SPJST scholarship winner, graduated from Southwestern University in Geor­ getown. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was also presented the Judson S. Custer Award for Outstanding Education Stu­ dent.

The Sommer family has another member to be proud of as an honor graduate. Leslie, who graduated from Cypress Creek High School, will also be attending Southwestern University this fall to pursue his degree in Art. Andrew Pike, a graduate of Cy-Fair High School, will be attending Angelo State University, San Angelo. He plans to major in government/pre-law and minor in history. He was awarded the Drama Medal and received, Honorable Mention All-Star Cast/Area III in UIL competition for his roll as Chief Brom­ den in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Carrie Killion, an honor graduate of Spring High School, will be attending Sam Houston University in their Honor' s Program. She has also received a Scholar's Scholarship award at the university and the Choir Scholarship from Spring High School.

She will major in Radio/Communica­ tions and minor in music.

Wednesday, July 17, 1991-VĚSTNÍK/5 Among our other young people, Lori Smith, won a trip to Chicago to com­ pete in the Model Search on Oprah Winfrey. She was selected from 14,000 contestants and was one of 67 semi-finalists.

Laurie Mikes has been running in Fun Runs and took first place in her age group at Stratford High School.

Her brother, Lee, is home for the sum­ mer from Baylor after his freshman year.

We are really proud of our young people and their accomplishments and wish them much success in the future.

Our treasurer, Evelyn Mikeska, has been on vacation to the Button Box Jubilee Polka Festival in Denver, Colorado. She will soon leave for a trip to Missouri. We wish her a good trip and also wish we were going along for the good time.

Seaton Choral Group News Dear Brothers and Sisters: On June 18th the following enter­ tained at Southland Villa Nursing Cen­ ter in Temple; Helen Janacek (president and song leader), Ralph Milek (accordianist), Martha Klusacek, Georgia Sodek, Agnes Schiller, Mary Holick, Della Psencik and Dorothy Pechal. We had a nice lis­ tening group of residents and we talked and visited with them, after­ wards. It does a person proud to have brightened an hour of the life of a shut-in.

Our next practice is set for Tuesday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Seaton Star Hall. Let's all be in attendance!

Dear Campers, District I will be camping soon and I am sure all of you are looking forward to camp. Arrival time is between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24 with departure at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 27th.

We will be having special activities each night at camp including a Mardi Gras party, a campfire and wiener roast, and a party at the pool.

This year, the camp craft is wreath­ making. We will also be decorating tote bags so bring an idea of what you would like on your bag.

Put a big smile on and we will see you at camp.

Dear Readers, District I will be holding their annual YAD on August 4, 1991. This event will be hosted by Lodge No. 13, Dime Box. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and last until 11 :30 a.m. A fried chicken lunch will be served beginning at 11 :00 a.m. A one-piece plate will be available for $2.00 and a 2-piece meal for $3.50. The meal will include mashed potatoes, green beans, a hot roll and iced tea. Desserts will also be available at a cost of 50 cents. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m, with a call to order. Competition will begin shortly thereafter.

Individual and Group Talent will be followed by a 30-minute break. Royal­ ty competition will then follow. I feel we will be finished with competition and crowning of our 1991 Royalty by 5:30 p.m. or soon after. I have received YAD cards and, from viewing them, it looks like we are in for a full day of entertainment.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you at our YAD. It will prove to be a day of fun and 'excitement not only for the participants but for all in atten­ dance.

Come out and enjoy yourself at Lodge No. 13, Dime Box on August 4, 1991.

The youth of District I will be taking their second annual Schlitterbahn trip the day after YAD on August 5th. See your youth leader for more details.

District IV Camp The youth from District IV will be attending camp from July 22nd through 25th. We will spend 3 days at Camp Paluxy and then continue on to Abilene for a day. We plan to return home on July 25th filled with fun memories.

We had a full schedule of swimming, canoeing, archery and crafts. We also enjoyed a cook-out, folk dancing, sing­ ing, games, hiking and .a campfire ceremony.

Saturday night was highlighted by a "Mardi Gras" Party. The campers wore costumes and party hats they decorated with feathers and ribbons. Upon ar­ rival they were given beaded necklaces and played several games. Then they were entertained by the leaders-in­ training (LITS). First on the program was a skit titled, "The Little Person"

by Craig Dornak and Craig Dorotik with Jody Krpec as the announcer.

Next, the group called "The Party" consisting of Stephanie Roye, Lenice Kaspar, Valerie Roye, Tracy Krpec and lifeguards, Bobby Allbritton and Vern Hegwood, performed a song and dance routine to "Summer Vacation."

Concluding the program were Dan Borak and Craig Dornak performing "Love and Affection" as "Nelson." The evening ended with a special campfire ceremony entitled, "Friendship."

Many thanks to the LITS; you did a great job! Mrs. Dvorak was born in Taylor on November 14, 1907, the daughter of the late Charlie and Elizabeth (Wolbrueck) Schave. A lifelong resi-

dent of the area, she was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Condra Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Robert Sauer of­ ficiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Edwin Turek, James Dvorak, Jr., Mike Richter, David Krueger, Arnold Haugeberg and Elroy Lieberum.

Sister Dvorak was preceded in death by her husbnad in 1980, and by six brothers.

Survivors include a son, James Dvorak and wife, Vernell of Thrall; two grandchildren, James Dvorak, Jr. and wife, Treva, Linda Richter and husband, Mike; three great­ grandchildren, Kerri Lynn Puckett, Dustin and Darin Dvorak; five sisters, Lorene Mikus, Vera Mae "Boots" Safarik, Pauline Dvorak of Taylor, Julie Summerfield of San Gabriel,

Evelyn Saldek of San Antonio; and a brother, Charlie Becker of Thrall.

Visitation was from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday, July 1 at Seaside Funeral Home. Graveside services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 at Seaside Memorial Park.

Country?

The so-called privatization program in Czechoslovakia started in the mid­ dle of January 1991. According to the article printed in the Wall Street Jour­ nal under the title "Prices Soar in Czech Sale of Government Proper­ ties," 18 shops were sold in the first round of public auctions.

Unfortunately, the title of the above­ mentioned W .S.J. article is misleading because it does not state how these stores or shops became state properties in the first place. Were these proper­ ties built by the Communists for the well-being of the Czech people, or were they seized for the most part from their rightful owners by the op­ pressive red regime installed in the Old country on or after 25th of Feburary in 1948? I am sure that ninety-nine and half percent to the readers know the correct answer to the above question.

The Wall Street Journal article con­ tinues as follows: "The crowd that packed the hall of the Prague Town Magistrate on the first day of auctions cheered when the winning bid was called. The first property, a green grocer's shop, sold for 580,000 crowns ($21,222)" Do you know, dear readers, that the average yearly earnings are 36,000 crowns in Czechoslovakia? This means that the average citizen would have had to put ALL of his money he made in the last sixteen (16) years together, through the bank, to have a chance to .become a green grocer, an owner of the above-mentioned store! To ac­ complish this "horrendous" task he either had to sponge his relatives and friends, or had to live like the home­ less people under the bridge and beg for his food! Jokes aside; most of the cheering crowd present at the Prague Town Magistrate Hall must have been people, who "had it made" under the previous regime, to be able to par­ ticipate in the betting.

Let me return again to the Wall Street Journal article. "By the second day prices had shot up, with a clothing shop far from the city's center initially priced at 32,00C crowns, selling for more than two million crowns. The first day festive atmosphere gave way to gloom as many spectators saw their own prospects for buying a business

reciding. By the end of 1991, the government plans to sell some 130,000 state-owned shops and small busi­ nesses to private owners.

The highest price was 3,560,000 crowns for a fashion boutique in the Old Town, Prague's pedestrian tourist area. Purchasers must also buy the in­ ventory of the property, bringing the price to 6,660,000 crowns, an astronomical sum to Czechoslovaks, whose average monthly salary is 3,000 crowns."

When I was in Czechoslovakia this spring, this official exchange rate of crowns to a dollar, printed daily in the Czech or Slovak newspapers, was thir­ thy to one, based on this figure, the clothing shop, long way from Prague's center, selling for more than two mil­ lion crowns, cost almost $67 ,000. The fashion boutique store in the center of Prague cost according to the same cal­ culation $222,000.

Take a pencil and piece of paper, dear readers, to figure out how long it would take to the average citizen of Czechoslovakia, with 36,000 crowns of yearly income to scrape enough of money to buy the above two properties in the Czechoslovak currency. -- Out­ rageous, isn't it?

Many people in the Old Country are very much upset to find out that the at­ tendance at those auctions consists, for most part, of the present and former communists. The former commies had the best paying jobs and they, or their children, got the best education pos­ sible, free of charge. These people changed their coats in die historical "velvet" revolution and have it made, again, with some of them even promoted to the greener pastures. The present communists at the auctions are mainly those, who are not retired.

They got the royal pensions, plenty of money in the banks, and they sit, like a hen on eggs, on the properties confis­ cated by the former regime and given to them for a paltry amount of money as a reward for their service to the communist party. What is the solution?

People in the Old country should give them some of their own medicine such as a confiscation of their properties which were stolen for most part anyway. Their pensions should not be any higher than the average Czech or Slovak citizen gets ---. Quo vadis my beloved Old country?

A Successful Search For Czech Roots, A Story About Fate

By Barbara Rozacky Hill Czechoslovakia, the homeland of Texas Czechs, is presently experienc­ ing a new birth and a new freedom since becoming an independent country on November 17, 1989, the date of the Velvet Revolution. After being under Soviet oppression for over forty years, the Czechs are busily making their long awaited transition from a central government controlled economy to that of a free market economy. They are full of spirit as they meet their many new challenges.

The Czechs are taking advantage of being able to leave their country to visit neighboring countries to see how they compare. Realizing much is to be done throughout Czechoslovakia, they have begun to rid evidence of Com­ munist devastation and destruction to their beautiful and historical country, a country that dates back one thousand years. Huge, magnificent cathedrals that took centuries to build are being refurbished for worshipers, many of whom waited a lifetime to practice

Byl strašlivý den. Vál prudký a mrazivý vítr. Nebe i moře, vše bylo šedé. Zdálo se, že husté mraky se sklánějí a dotýkají obrovských vln. V přístavu ustal všechen život, vše, co žilo, uteklo do města a shromáždilo se kolem kamen v hostincích. Ale náš parník dostal rozkaz k odplutí, poněvadž jsme přijali zprávu, že ob­ chodní parník na moři volá o pomoc.

Netrvalo to dlouho a dostihli jsme místa katastrofy.

Cizí parník se potápěl, jeho siréna zoufale sténala.

Na jeho palubě nebylo nikoho kromě kapitána, který stál na svém místě zahalen v plášť. Pokusili jsme se přiblížiti k lodi, která se potápěla, ale strašlivé vlny nám v tom zabránily.

Počali jsme se tedy s kapitánem "Racka" dorozumívati signály. Dali jsme mu na srozuměnou, že se pokusíme zachrániti je pomocí lana.

Přivázali jsme jeden konec kovového lana k našemu stěžni a druhý konec jsme hodili potápějícímu se parníku.

Muži z "Racka" jeden po druhém se vyšplhali na palubu našeho parníku.

Byli tak znaveni, že omdleli, sotvaže se dostali na palubu. Musili jsme je křísiti teplými nápoji a třením. Zachránili jsme takto 18 mužů. Kapitán poslední opustil svoje místo.

Chtěli jsme již odvázati lano a vytáhnouti kotvu, když kormidelník z "Racka" ke mně přiběhl a volal: "Na palubě je ještě jeden muž, mladý hoch, kuchařský pomocník!"

V tu chvíli jsme zaslechli z potápějící se lodi volání: "Počkejte!" A zároveň jsme viděli, jak tam malý hoch pobíhá v kajutě a přichází pak na palubu s pytlem. Připevnil si jej k ramenům a pak začal šplhati po laně. Bylo viděti, jak je unaven a že napíná poslední své síly. Sotvaže se také postavil na naši palubu, padl jako mrtvý. Lékař k němu přispěchal. My všichni ostatní jsme byli kolem něho, zatím co jeden z námořníků jal se otvírati hochův pytel.

"Kapitáne," volal na mne přitom.

"V pytli se něco hýbe!"

"Tak jej otevři a podívej se, co to je," odpověděl jsem.

Námořník otevřel pytel. Vyběhla z něho velká šedá kočka .

"Je tam ještě něco?"

Námořník ponořil svou ruku do py­ tle a vyňal odtud švédskou vlajku, které jsem vzdali povinnou čest.

Lékař poslouchal srdce hochovo a pravil: "Zije, třete mu čelo."

Tentýž námořník, který otevřel pytel, sňal hochovu čapku, aby se mohl vyplnit rozkaz. A ejhle, zpod čepice vyletěl kanárek a posadil se na napiaté lano.

"Musíme učiniti vše možné pro toho hocha," řekl lékař pohnut.

"Je to opravdový námořník," připojil jsem. "Ačkoliv opouštěl poslední palubu, myslil ještě na záchranu dvou jiných mladých životů, které by bez něho byly ztraceny."

-, u 1 tam jsou roztroušeny kousky bílé jako labutí peří. Ano, nemýlím se. Jest to bývalé roucho královské a teď tu hřeje útlá tělíčka mláďat. Ale jak se sem dostalo? Hledím se úžasem na tatínka a zase na oškubané zvíře.

"Oškubala se sama," řekl tatínek a přiklopil bednu. Hned potom králičí matka, vlezla do ní na stráž.

Za chladných březnových nocí se tam asi často třásla zimou. Ale sama roztrhala svůj ochranný plášť, aby jím přikryla své miláčky. Smířil jsem se s ní, i když sama se zbavila pohodlí a krásy. A netoužil jsem již, abych si ji pohladil. Za tolik lásky k dětem by to bylo málo. Zasloužila si, abych ji políbil. Snad si to myslil tatínek také.

Když jsem byl ještě malý, měl jsem rád zviřátka, která se nechala pohladit.

Náš Ořech mi to dovolil ochotně a často, ale s králíky nebylo rozumné řeči. Ani jejich královna, která byla ze všech největší a nejkrásnější, se hladit nedala. Vybíral jsem pro ni nejlepší sousta, pampelišku jsem sháněl po všech paloucích a byl bych pro ni pro­ lezl kdejaký plot u zahrad. Ale mar­ nost nad marnost! Královsa všechno přijala, jen mému pomazlení se vyhýbala.

Jednou na jaře snesl tatínek s půdy podlouhlou bedničku bez víka, vyřezal jí v čele veliký otvor a pak ji vystlal ječnou slamou. Bedničku zanesl pod kůlnu a poklopil ji dnem vzhůru.

Rázem z ní byla budka jako stvořená pro obývání. A sotva jsme od ní odstoupili, přihlásila se i nájemnic c -­ královna! Protáhla se otvorem do tmavé komory a zkoumala její zařízení.

Myslil jsem si, že až bude z budky vylézati, že ji pohladím. Ale ještě jsem nedomyslil a tatínek řekl varovně a přísně: "Ani na ni nesáhneš! Pokousala by tě. Bude teď nějaký čas tuze zlá!" A tatínek měl pravdu. Po několika dnech se královna proměnila že jsem se jí polekal. Když vycházela z budky, nebyla to už sličná krasavice, ale Byly jedny boty. Bydlely v krásné rozedraná žebračka. Z její nádherné srsti vyškubal někdo celé trsy, že po bílé krabici u Báťů a jen se leskly nich zůstala na kůži jen holá místa. Ne­ blahobytem. Tu jednoho deštivého dne je vytáhl hrudi. Zmizela odtud úbělová nápr­ senka, zbyly jen otrhané cáry. Celá prodavač nešetrně z krabice a postava zhubeněla. Když jsem si natahoval je jakémusi pánovi na nohy.

Než se vzpamatovaly z leknutí, byly vzpomněl na její bývalou krásu, boty prodány do otroctví. Vstrčili je do připadala mi jako vyzáblé strašidlo.

Uvěřil jsem také, že jest zlá. Kdykoli krabice, ovázali je pevně motouzem a odnesli z prodejny, kde bylo tak dobře. jsem se pohnul k její budce, vsoukala "To si líbit nedáme," radily se obě se do ní prudce a potom na mne hleděly boty, "přinutíme pána, aby nás zanesl ze tmy jen dvě zlobné oči. zase zpět." A šeptaly a radily se po Nechápal jsem, co se s královnou děje. Hádal jsem zprvu, že ji v noci celou cestu.

Ale zlé časy teprve přišly! Pán je roz­ potrhala kuna nebo že onemocněla vzteklinou. Divné mi bylo jen, že balil a začal po nich, chudácích, šlapat, skákat, chodil s nimi po hrbolaté cestě tatínek o tom nemluví, a že maminka teď často odnáší pod kůlnu talíř a dokonce šlápl do kalné kaluže. to už teplého mléka. Až jednou tatínek pro­ ubohé boty dohřálo! I začaly-pána ze mluvil: "Povím ti něco nového. Máme všech sil tlačit, skřípat, dřít, až to tady mladé králíčky. I vedl tele na zámek a prosil pana hraběte, aby je přijal darem. Hrabě pozoruměl hned, proč se dělá lakomý ten muž tak štědrým, i pravil, že to tele nechce.

Rolník však neustával prositi, aby pan hrabě nepohrdal tím nepatrným dárkem. Konečně pravil moudrý pán: "Nuže tedy, protože mě nutíte, přijmu dar ten. Ale, poněvadž jste tak štědrý, nesmím já býti skoupým. Daruji vám něco na odslouženou, a to má mnohem větší cenu, nežli vase tele."

Po těch slovech dal užaslému dárci -­ velkou tu řepu, která lakotivému muži byla velmi dobře známa.

1. To denote that something is smaller than average, or that we feel certain liking in or affection to a person or a thing, or that we speak to a child and for some other reasons we use diminutive nouns. In comparison to English they are much more plentiful in Czech. Some of the frequently used suffixes (note the changes in stem vowels and final consonants of some stems): masc.: -ek, -ík, -eěek, -íěek, -ínek.

Observe: dům- domek (little house), vlak-vláěek (litle train- a toy or "choo-choo"), ostrovostrůvek, strom- stromek, nůž- nožík, táta­ tatínek fem.: -ka, -ička. Observe: ulice­ ulička (a lane), kníha=- knížka (a little book, also deposit book), teta­ tetlěka neut.: -ko, -eěko, -íěko, -íěko.

Observe: pivopivkopiveěko (always "my favorite"beer), slunce­ slunkosluníčko, uchoouško, okoočkooěíěko, město­ městečko, kamna- kamínka Note: The longer suffixes like -eček, -ička may denote higher degree of diminishing or affection than shorter suffixes like -ek. Observe: Jan- Jeník (nickname, Johnie)- Jeníček (a little boy's name, KarelKarlík­ Karlíeek, stůl- stolek- stoleěek. The meaning of a diminutive is sometimes more or less different from the original noun. Observe: chlap (man, chap, guy)- chlapec (boy) - chlapeček (lit­ tle boy), školaškolka (nursery school), chlébíěek (sandwich), hodiny (clock)hodinky (wristwatch), večer- večírek (party), baby (old woman, derogatory)- babička (grand­ mother). Reunions Ruzicka Reunion

The second family reunion for the Ruzicka family and descendants of Jan and Katerina Ruzicka will be held on Saturday, July 20, 1991 at the Buck­ holts SPJST Hall. Please try to attend because we had a wonderful time last year meeting relatives. This year, like last year, we will have a pot luck din­ ner; bring a meat, vegetable, dessert or combination. If anyone knows of some family member who didn't attend last year, please notify them if possible. If you have any family artifacts, photos or history you would like to share, please bring them with you.
