Moulton Lodge Elects New Officers

Vrazels' Polka Band Returns From Washington, D.C. The Vrazels have been busy this summer performing as part of the "Ac­ cordian Kings" program, which is put on by Texas Folklife Resources.

"Accordian Kings" is a program which celebrates different cultural traditions of accordian music that came together in Texas to make its own outstanding unique form of music, and features Czech Polka, Texas-Mexican Conjunto, Cajun and Creole Zydeco music.

The Vrazels have just returned from Washington, D.C. where they gave two performances on Saturday, June 15 at

the Kennedy's Center for Performing Arts.

Other bands peforming were Flaco Jimenex y Su Conjunto, Little Willie Davis and the Zydeco Hitch Hikers and Jackie Caillier and the Cajun Cousins.

While in Washington, D.C., the Vrazels stayed at the Wyndham Bristol Hotel located on Pennsylvania Avenue. They also received back-stage passes to a concert put on by the group, The Texas Tornados.

Before departing from Washington National Airport on Sunday, the Folklife Staff treated the band with a tour of the city.

The next "Accordian Kings" perfor­ mance by the Vrazels will be on Friday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Aus­ tin Opera House located at 200 Academy Drive in Austin.

The Flag of the United States of America --- look at its colors! The "bright stars" blaze bold and resolute in a changing constellation. The "broad stripes" flash white and red like a jet trail across a brilliant sunrise.

June 14, we celebrated the birthday of our flag, not for the color of its cloth, but for the courage of people who still respect it as a symbol of hard-fought freedom.

Boro on June 14, 1777, the flag is honored each year by Americans everywhere but especially by the 1 O million men, women and children who are members of the 100 fraternal benefit societies comprising the Na­ tional Fraternal Congress of America.

Fraternal Week, sponsored by the NFCA, begins June 8 and reaches its culmination on Flag Day. This week represents our nation' s ongoing fight for freedom not only in faraway lands but at home where we fight for freedom from hunger, drug abuse, homelessness, illiteracy, poverty, and most importantly, fight for freedom against the indifference toward these problems.

On whatever battlefield our flag may fly---whether here or abroad-c-ít repre­ sents the power of the American volunteer spirit to confront the problems facing our world.

Our Flag Day and throughout Frater­ nal Week, let's all do our part to honor our flag and to applaud the brave army of volunteers who work tirelessly to make certain that our nation becomes a compassionate haven where freedom reigns supreme, where we can forever proclaim:

Losing weight only to gain it back a few months later is a frustrating fact of life for many dieters. But a new study shows that the so-called yo-yo pattern can be life threatening, too. Fluctua­ tions in weight several times a year, or even once every few years, may double your risk of heart disease and premature death, according to a study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. Among the 3,130 people studied by Yale University psychologist, those whose weight went up and down most over a 14-year period have up to twice the rate of heart disease and were also up to two times more likely to die prematurely than those whose weight remained relatively stable. Researchers aren't sure exactly how dramatic changes in weight actually damage the body. One theory is that repeated dieting leads to a stronger preference for fatty foods.

Another, pertaining primarily to men, is that weight may be lost mostly from the lower part of the body but gained back in the upper part. Excess fat above the waistline has been linked to a highter risk of heart disease.

The potential problem is widespread.

She won a two-year paid scholarship from the Art Institute of Houston for her photography and art. She won over Houston and out-laying schools. She attended the Klein Oak High School. · She graduated on June l, from the Hofheinz Pavilion University of Hous­ ton. Her parents are Noble, Jr. and Judeau Keating, and she has one brother, Thadeus.

Congratulations from Lodge 88, and we wish you the very best.

On Sunday, July 28 there will be an outstanding Blue Room party at Lodge 88 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; for $12.50 a person, you will be served cocktails, dinner and dancing with the Wilderness furnishing mixed music.

We had a beautiful wedding June 8, 1991 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Vincent Paul Hegwood and Kimberly Ann Holub were united in marriage by Father Stephen Tiemann.

Kimberly Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie L. Holub, and Vincent is the son of Mr. and Mrs. King B. Hegwood. Their grandparents are Mar­ cella and Ernest Chaloupka and Elexco Holub. Kimberly Ann and Vincent are both Texas A&M University graduates. The matrons of honor were Jaime Wentrcek and Cindy Gibbons; best man was Vernon Hegwood, and six bridesmaids and seven groomsmen; the little flower girl was Vincent' s niece Kelsie Huble and the ring bearer was Keith Kouba, a cousin of the bride. The vocalists were Helen Chaloupka and Helen Hegwood who sang while the guests were seated, "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" and "Looking Through the Eyes of Love."

Helen Chaloupka sang, "Sunrise, Sun­ set" during the entrance of the parents.

Helen Hegwood sang . "The Lord' s Prayer" and "Ave Maria." Also during the lighting of the Unity Candle, Helen sang, "One Hand, One Heart." The or­ ganist was Veronica Stevens.

The wedding celebration was followed by a reception in the church's Fellowship Hall. There were many relatives and friends who enjoyed the good food and drinks, and the love ex­ tended by the parents for their children. We wish this fine couple many happy years.

Hope everyone survived the 4th Dear Members and Friends: I arrived home safely from my two­ weekend without too much sunburn and too many hamburgers. My letter comes week visit in St. Louis in the home of late this month because I have been my niece Sister Mary K. Harrison and · family and where my sister Micky Ban with my mother and our dear member, Sister Helen Vrla, in the hospital and resides. I got to see some friends I rehab, again. After having such haven't seen in fifty years, which I en­ wonderful success with her knee joyed so much. The only sad part was that my brother, Emil Chorich, still surgery in March, Sister Vrla slipped and fell breaking her right hip. So, didn't recognized me. It's sad.

My great niece, Tina Harrison, won once again, she is having to endure major surgery and rehabilitation. But the Single's Champion in a Tennis she is doing wonderfully well and Tournament while I was there. She is our lodge member. Brother Jerry and Sister Henrietta Milan were on a four-day stay in Atlanta, Georgia where Sister Milan was signing her prints for the Deck Halls.

While there, they met up with Brother John and Sister Kathryn Swinford of Houston, Texas, members of Lodge ' No. 92. It was a nice surprise and I en- · joyed seeing them.

A group of our members along with Sokols attended the Southern District Slet in Corpus Christi and congratulations go out to all who participated.

They came home with several first place winners and others. Our seniors really got the praise also for doing so well; ages up to 70 years, keep up the good work.

We extend our get well wishes to.

Brother Donald Steinman who was in the hospital almost two weeks and now recuperating; Sister Jeanie Mason who has been ill two weeks with pneumonia again, and recuperating; and to Sister Henrietta Milan who had surgery Friday, June 28th and hopes to go home soon. A special prayer for Brother George Halford (the son of Sister Mary Catherine Garrison and grandson of the late Sister Mary Hale) who has been in a Peoria, Illinois hospital for 2 1/2 months and looks as if he has a long road ahead of him.

George you are in our thoughts and prayers'.

I'm happy to report Sister Anna Johnson is back with us after a bout with the flu and was on' the verge of pneumonia.

Sister Kelly Eaton and daughter Abbe are. visiting in the home of her mothe~ S1~ter ~ary Jean Stoeppelman.

Lodge Rozkvět No.172, Pasadena Hello Brothers and Sisters: On June 26th at 2:30 p.m., we had our covered dish supper with a fine turnout and plenty of good food.

Thanks to all of you for coming and bringing covered dishes of good food which was enjoyed by all.

Then at 7:30 p.m., lst Vice President Irving Theiss called the meeting to order because President Jerry Dressler was in Czechoslovakia.

Brother Theiss called on Brother Alvin Sefcik to lead the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the USA flag and a mo­ ment of silent prayer for our deceased brothers and sisters was held.

Secretary Lillia Mae · Peter had roll call and read the correspondence.

Brother Theiss also read the cor­ respondence on behalf of the presi­ dent.

Minutes of our last meeting were read and accepted as corrected.

Sister Tinnie Walla gave the treasurer's report which was good to hear.

Then all the committees gave their good reports; thanks for the good reports.

FAC Brother Theiss gave a report on two benefits coming up; one July 14th and the other one on July 28th, which all of us should support them.

Sister Dottie Watkins, youth leader, gave her report and comments on their good District V YAD they had. The youth won lots of prizes, and especially one prize they won first place in was their scrapbook, which they were proud of winning. The members gave the youth club a big round of applause for their good work. We're proud of our youth club and hope you keep up the good work, thanks!

After all of our businesses were transacted, it was noted that our next meeting will be July 24th at 7:30 p.m.

The door prize was won by Sister Margie Hrabina.

Brother Theiss adjourned the meeting at 8: 15 p.m.

On July 14th we are having an eve­ ning of entertainment which is Bob White Benefit Dance, a musician who played with the Bob Wills Play Boys and also played locally with bands, is seriously ill and needs help. This is supported by a lot of fine old country­ western musicians; such as Leon Rausch, Johnny Gimble (voted Fiddle Player of the Year from Nashville, Tennessee), Herb Remming steel guitar player and Bob Boatwright, a gre_at ~uitarist and a professor at University of Texas.

Lancaster Czech Course Ends With Czech Dinner The Czech language and culture class at Cedar Valley College con­ cluded with an evening of Czech food and music at the home of Evelyn and Ron Frnka in Lancaster. Joining In­ structor Retta Chandler and her hus­ band, Charles, at the Frnka home were class participants, Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Faye) Wright, George Kettrey, Laura Jenkins, Judy Mikel and Mike Trojacek.

Following the meal everyone joined in a sing-along to George's accordian music. Coffee and kolaches ended the evening of fun and fellowship.

The birthday party was held Friday, June 28, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday."

The Unique Shop provided corsages, the Immanuel United Church of Christ Guild provided cakes, Eileen Alaminsky brought a decorated birthday cake for her mother, Emma S. Tielke, Albin and Verna Dell Tielke brought donuts. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Ida Gasch and Lydia Hortman helped serve cake, donuts, ice cream, punch anď coffee to all.

The State Hearing was held Saturday afternoon, June 29; several families at­ tended.

The residents enjoyed all the ac­ tivities during the month of June.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches and to the volunteers who do services in the home for these resi­ dents.

Reunions Sebek Reunion The annual reunion of Joe John Sebek and Frances Koslovsky Sebek will be held at SPJST Lodge No. 24 (Flag Hall) in Cyclone, Texas on Saturday, August 3, 1991. First car built in the central part of Europe by Ike Sustala in the city of Kopřivnice. The car was named the "President." It traveled 10 miles per hour and made the first major trip from KopY:ivnice to Vienna in 1897 won a race in France in 1899. In 1912, the car's name was changed to "Tatra" and is still being manufactured as of this date. The descendants of Ike Šustala received a newspaper with this picture stating that the car, the "President," was last driven in a parade in Prague on July 15, 1967. The car is kept on display at the Prague Museum.

Jan Amos Komensky, who was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia on March 28, 1592, became an internationally famous educator, scholar, author, philosopher and theologian.

Komensky wrote 200 books on a variety of subjects and was a true "Renaissance Man." Two of his greatest books are: "Gate of Languages Unlocked," which introduced a modern approach to language and compared the Czech and Latin languages side by side. And "The Visible World In Pic­ tures," which was the first illustrated

Komenský spread his educational reforms throughout Europe. He urged universal educational for boys and girls, teaching in the local language, methods using drawings and examples, physical education, health education, vocational education and the use of drama in schools. (Imagine all this before the American Revolution!!)

Jan Amos Komenský was known as "The Great Moravian." He was invited to be the President of Harvard College, but declined because he had been asked to establish a new educational system for Sweden. This famous Czech almost became an American.

FroITI District Youth Counselors District II YAD This Sunday At Cyclone Dear District II Members, Excitement and fun is only days away for the youth members of Dis­ trict II. It all begins on Sunday, July 14, 1991 at SPJST Lodge No. 24. Cyclone: District II Youth Achievement Day. Youth will be competing for district titles in Beseda, talent, royalty and crafts which will send first place win­ ners on their way to state competition in August.

I hope each of you will set this day aside to be in Cyclone to see our many talented youth. Your presence on this day will show our youth how very proud and supportive we are of the youth who are "tomorrow's future."

We also invite those of you outside District II to join us.

Cyclone is located east of Temple off Highway 53. Take FM 485 which is about 3/4 mile from Zabcikville, take the first paved road to the right and Cyclone lodge is located on the left.

Registration will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon! Workers need to arrive at 10:30 a.m.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, donuts and drinks will be sold prior to 12: 15 p.m.

The evening meal. which will be served prior to royalty, will consist of chicken fried steak and the trimmings.

The evening meal tickets will be sold for $3.50.

DISTRICT II 1991 CAMP AT VAL VERDE We complete YAD on Sunday and take a few days to rest up for camp.

Junior camp begins on Thursday, July 18 at 2:00 p.m. and will end on Sun­ day, July 21 at 10:00 a.m. Teen camp will be held from Sunday, July 21 at 10:00 a.m. through Wednesday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m. We are looking for­ ward to a great camp once again this year.

Our theme camp for this year is "Save the Earth." Each camp will have a "Save the Earth" party. Plan to wear a costume from the 60's, bell bottom jeans, the hippy look, flowers. We are planning a cookout at the river with the meal being planned and cooked by the Taylor leaders and chaperones.

Thanks Taylor for volunteering! Most of our activities will be the same as in the past: swimming, horseback riding, archery, canoeing, crafts, hiking, sing­ ing and dancing, parties, games, and much more.

Each youth club will be responsible for the flag ceremonies and table grace.

Here is a list of items to bring: Sheets, pillow, light cover (I suggest a sleeping bag to put over mattress) Towels and wash cloths Toilet articles (soaps, etc.)

Swim suit and large towel Suntan lotion and bug repellent Change of clothes for each day and one extra change Long pants and socks Large garbage bag for dirty clothes Two pairs of shoes (comfortable) Cap Flashlight' Camera (optional) Fan and extension cord (optional) Tapes for dancing Fifty cents per day for soda (be sure you have correct change) Please be certain all clothes are marked! Tapes especially must be marked to insure being returned!

Teens camp only - please bring a 3 liter coke bottle for your craft. Each year we look forward to the many new faces at camp and, of course, look for­ ward to re-uniting with our friends from the past years of camp.

Please start making plans for the Junior Carnival night, games, songs and dances which you will be in charge of.

Juniors, this year rather than bring­ ing pennies for the carnival, we will keep with the theme of "Save the Earth." Admission will be a re-cycl­ able item. I'm sure you'll be able to find something re-cyclable at camp.

You may also bring shaving cream for outdoors.

YOUTH FESTIVAL OVERNIGHT CAMPO UT This is a statewide campout which will be held Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22 at Seaton Lodge No. 47. Please make plans to at­ tend. District III Camp News District III camp will be July 15th, 16th, 15th and 18th at Camp Val Verde in McGregor, Texas. Plan to ar­ rive at 11 :00 a.m. on Monday, and we will leave after lunch on Thursday.

Camp schedule includes: Swimming Hiking Canoeing Horseback riding Folk dancing Hayride and games Our Tuesday night, the party theme will be "Marti-Gras" and everyone needs to bring a costume.

Following is a list of things to bring for the camp session: 1. Bedding (sheets, pillow, light cover or sleeping bag) 2. Swim suit, towel and sun screen 3. Toilet articles (tooth brush, soap, etc.)

Youth Letters A Fraternal Message From District II 1990-1991 Queen

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Setting goals in my life has always been simple for me. However, achiev­ ing them has not quite been that easy.

When I was crowned District II Queen on July 8, 1990 at Lodge 187, Round Rock, I experienced one of the greatest moments of my life. I achieved a goal I set for myself.

The new District II King was Jason Dear Readers, Reese of Lodge 47, Seaton. My Summer is in real swing and many duchess was Jennifer Ashcraft and things are happening with the youth. Jason's duke was David Koslovsky.

Wednesday, July 10, 1991-VĚSTNÍK/11 very, very cold. Jason rode with State Queen Leslie Barnes, while I rode with District II Runner-up King Tommy Rieger. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar drove our brand new red convertible which the crowd loved.

I loved it (and wanted it), too!

Spring rolled around and this brought many activities. I attended the District II Spring meeting at Lodge 18, Elgin, which was a delight.

Jason and I rode to my hometown parade on April 27th. The Rogers' Homecoming Parade was smaller than our other parades, but there were people galore along the route who we threw gum to.

The month of May was filled with the beautiful May Fetes, Jason and I represented District II in all four May Fetes --- Taylor (May 5), Round Rock (May 11), Seaton (May 18) and Elgin (May 26). I was quite pleased with the youth and adults participation in these events. Each hall was uniquely decorated in a glorious way. The girls and young women were beautiful in their formal dresses. The boys and young men were absolutely stunning.

The saying says: "Nothing is per­ fect." I have to disagree with this -­ My reign in every way has been per­ fect. Of course, I didn't style it this way alone. I had lots of help and dedication.

DYC Patsy Koslovsky is absolutely the greatest. She informed me months ahead about all of the events. She made sure everything was perfect and ready. She was always there encourag­ ing and supporting me every step of the way. She arranged all of our ap­ pearances and did a great job publiciz­ ing us. Patsy is very understanding and caring. She is exceptionally dedicated to her family and to the SPJST. I found a true friend in her which I will always cherish. Patsy, thank you for every­ thing!

I would also like to thank Willie E. Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, for all of their time given to the Royalty and to Willie, for driving us in the Rosebud Parade. Thanks to Howard Leshikar for his presence at all of the events, his warm smiles, and for driv­ ing Tommy Rieger and me in the Temple Christmas Parade.

To Claudette and Tim Reese: Thank you both for being beautiful people. Thank you, Tim, for making me laugh and driving Jason and me in the Rogers' Parade. To Claudette, I thank you for your never-ending support. I will cer­ tainly miss you. Best Wishes!

To Lodge 24, Cyclone, thanks for "believing in me." I thank Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft for all of her help. She has done an exceptionally marvelous job in her first year as youth leader.

Thanks to Jason Reese for being a wonderful king. I've seen him grow into a sweet and caring young man.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Attend Camp Dear Members and Friends, On June 21-23 the SPJST youth went to camp at Camp Lone Star. At Camp Lone Star, we went swimming once or twice a day. For craft we made bluebonnets. We also went canoeing and got a chance to try archery. We also were treated to snowcones every day. We had fun at camp.

On June 9, 1991 our lodge met at Mr. Gatti' s and we discussed our annual Family Day for July 14, 1991. We are planning to bring dominoes and horse­ shoes. We will have a softball game for the kids. (If you attend bring a baseball glove.)

We had a Father's Day door prize won by Joe Siptak. An adult door prize was won by August Nebauer and Krystle Bender won the youth door prize.

Our next meeting will be July 14 at St. Mary's, west of Hallettsville. Din­ ner will be served at 12:30 p.m.

Member Leslie Watkins led the Pledge of Allegiance and then we remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read. There were eleven members plus two ,, adults present.

James Rast, a third-grader visiting his grandma and Andrie Soruson, a 10year-old guest of Jeanie and Kate Lee, were our guests.

The minutes were read and approved.

Youth Leader Dottie Watkins gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $453.65.

We discussed District V YAD and seven members from our lodge entered and we had 2 first place winners, 4 second places and all did a fine job.

We decided to do a nursing home JOHNNIE R. PALLA, project on August 4th.

Breakfast next morning in Prague on June 29 was at our leisure because this was a "free" day for everyone. The afternoon and evening hours were also "free" for us to select to attend a con­ cert, opera, ballet or dinner, arranged by the concierge at the hotel desk.

On June 30, after an early breakfast and hotel checkout in Prague, we at­ tended a 9: 15 a.m. Mass at St. Vitus.

Immediately, after service, we con­ tinued to travel to Olomouc to Archbishop Frantisek Vanak's residence for a welcome by him and his staff. After a warm welcome, we then proceeded to motor to Frenstat Vlcina Hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Following a Valassko breakfast on July 1, we traveled to Olomouc to tour the recently re-opened seminary of Larry T. Marek Olomouc, and continued to Svaty Kopecek (Holy Hill) that overlooks the city. Our lunch was included while in Frenstat, but dinner was again "on your own."

On July 2 we ate breakfast in Frenstat and then motored to Svaty Hostyn (Holy Hostyn) which is the famous shrine in Moravia. We had lunch at Slusovice and visited "Karolinka," a glass factory for pur­ chases. This area is indeed very pic­ tureque in the Beskyd Mountains. In the meantime, we again returned to Frenstat to eat dinner "on our own."

While at Frenstat after breakfast, on July 3, we had the opportunity to have a "free day" for our interests. How­ ever, in the evening, included in the tour, was a grilled chicken over char­ coal at the Valassko Vlcina Koliba, a shephreďs cottage, which was a short distance from the hotel.

We toured some more on July 4 after breakfast from Frenstat to Novy Jicin, an arcaded medieval town square known for shopping, and we visited the famous TONAK hat factory. In mid-afternoon, a Moravian/Texas "Fourth of July" celebration took place in a store at a collective farm; roasted pig and "pivo," was included.

After breakfast in Frenstat on July 5, we checked out of the hotel and motored south to St. Cyril's and Methodius annual · celebration in Velehrad. Everyone had lunch "on your own" on the grounds since they had food stands and souvenirs for sale.

Then we continued to Brno to Hotel Myslivna for dinner and an overnight rest. This hotel was situated on the outskirts of city center in a wooded area.

Jana Nejedly reached the final of Girls 18 Singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Ashley Johnson of Austin on Thursday.

Nejedly, the No. 2 seed, will meet top-seeded Tomoko Tsurutani of Richardson in the final this morning.

"The last time we played, it was a very close three-setter," said Nejedly. "Ash­ ley has a big serve, so I needed to keep her deep because if you give her a sure ball, she's going to take advantage of it."

Martina Nejedly, the top seed in Girls 16 Singles, reached the final with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over fourth-seeded Nancy Dingwall of Houston.

The younger Nejedly will meet second-seeded Julie Scott of Tyler for today's title.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Srnka.

Bylo časně ráno. Měsícstál v úplňku nad lesy a na tmavě modré obloze se třáslo plno hvězd. Mrzlo jen praštělo.

Vzduch v údolí mezi lesy řezal do plic, svíral v hrdle a nemohl se dýchat, dokud neprošel alespoň kapesníkem.

Lesní údolí leželo pod sněhem. Na kmenech stromů ležely těžké sněhové polštáře. Občas tíhou některý sklouzl a sypkýsníh jako bílá mlha zastřel phled do tichého lesa. V houštinách ležely spousty sněhu. Sníh sehnul kmenyaž k zemi, nakupil se na ně a proměnil krásné porosty lesní v mrtvé, sněhové město.

K lesu se krčí několik chaloupek. Jen komíny ukazují, že jsou obydleny.

Pomalu z nich vystupuje bílý dým do hustého vzduchu, stojí nad komíny, jako by se bál dále odejíti.

V zamrzlých oknech blýsklo se světlo. Lidé vstávají. Teta Pavlíkova musí pokliditi kravky. Vstala, zatopila v kemnech. V oknech povstávají černá kola, rozmrzají.

Rektor zaštěkal. Tetě přišlo pohleděti oknem.

Co vidí? Nechceočím ani uvěřiti. --Z lesa vyšla srna. Zastavila se a uši napřímila.

Dívala se rovnou Pavlíkovům do okna. Hup, hup!

Skočila přes zavátou cestu a pak nesměle se blížila ke stavení.

Rektor štěkal jako pominutý. Teta přistoupila k oknu. Srna ji už uviděla.

Srna venku, teta ve světnici. Stály tak, a oči povídaly, co se řečí ani pověděti nedá.

Srna prosí o kus sousta. Přišla k lidem -- tetu Pavlíkovu prosí. Tátu­ srnce zastřelili, obě děti zmrzly, ona sama přišla sem z mrtvého města.

Nechá ji teta odejíti? Musí mrazem také zahynouti?

Teta rozuměla. Celou řadu roků skoro v lese bydlí, v zimě v létě lesem chodívá, mnoho zkusila a mnoho lesních přátel zná, ale tohle ještě neviděla. Srna sama jako němý přišla ke stavení. Prosí o záchranu, hyne hladem.

Pavlíková honem nevěděla, co má dělat. Co má honem vzíti, aby srna neodešla? Ošatka vařených brambor je tu. Teta má je připraveny pro kravičky.

Klika cvakla, dveře zaskřípaly. Srna jako žebrák za dveřmi se třese. Teta jí nastavila mísu s bramborami. Srna brala chvatně a polykala.

I Rektor je tím překvapen, co se stalo. Když viděl, jak teta srnu útrpně pozoruje, sedl si na práh proti ní, zdvihl hlavu do výšky a očí s ní nespouštěl.

Teta se už klepala zimou. Srna však nechce jít dále, mezi dvěrmi mísu vyprázdnila. Poděkovala slabým "mek" a zvolná ubírá se k lesu.

Jen pár kroků od stavení se zastavila. Končila tu lesní stráň. Pod kořeny obrovských smrků černala se v záveji skrýše. Srna stála, chvíli otálela.

Rozhodla se. Hup! hup! Vešla do přístřeší. Byla za vetrem, zdálo se jí tu teplo.

Zde si odpočine. Blízko dobrých lidí!
