Local XXVI Convention Planning Committee Elects Officers The local Convention Planning Com­ mittee (CPC) had an organizational meeting on June 11, 1991 at Hillje, SPJST Lodge No. 40. The committee is an association of District VI mem­ bers. The group elected officers and discussed its involvement in planning of the XXVI · Convention. President Howard Leshikar, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and District VI Director Matt Vanek were present from the Supreme Lodge to help coor­ dinate the planning. ;

The CPC decided to produce a con­ vention brochure and sell .advertising space in the brochure. The CPC will plan and the district will sponsor a Monday night activity for the XXVI delegates. The CPC also tentatively decided to take charge of decorations at the Convention and provide other assistance to the Home Office staff. It will plan local tours for visitors.

The next meeting of the CPC was set for 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 25 in Hillje, at the SPJST Lodge No. 40~

Remember to attend your District Youth Achievement Day. The next one will be in District II at Lodge No. 24 in Cyclone, July 7th. This district, in the past, held successful Y ADs, we hope they will have another one to add to their record.

Many of us realize in these days of the jet age, that ours is the respon­ sibility of preparing our children for a good and productive life. This is done by first teaching them at home, then in the elementary schools, in high schools and we all hope that theirs will be the opportunity of going through college.

Theirs is the generation in which col­ lege does, and will continue to play the most important part in their lives.

Unfortunately, many of our children will be deprived of the opportunity to enter college, because they are not prepared for it financially.·Certainly, as parents, we will do our very best to provide that financial cushion in order that our children can play an important part in the future of our country, and enjoy a happy and bountiful life for themselves.

Educational funds do not just happen -- they must be planned for and earned with hard work and sacrifice on the part of the parents. As fathers and providers for the family, we can pro­ vide the protection for our families during the growing stages of their childhood, by purchasing adequate life insurance. When they are ready for that most important step of entering college, we can utilize the cash we have accumulated in our life insurance program for their protection during their formative years to pay for their college education.

Or perhaps many of us would want to set aside a certain amount each month in the form of endowment, which will be available to them at age 18, when most of them will be entering college.

Our SPJST Scholarship Progam cer­ tainly is a great help in their future!

Many of us have planned for our children's education, but -- . many

others have not given this important part of their child's future a thought. If you have not given this thought any consideration, don't you think the time to act is NOW?

*** Some time ago this column men­ tioned that some members/readers had requested more "simple everyday" reading in the Czech Section and we have been doing so for some time; we hope you benefit from these readings.

In this issue we begin a story "Matka Liska" (Mother Fox) about how a mother fox took care of her young ones and the risks she took. We hope you find it easy and interesting reading leading you to more advanced and in­ tellectual reading and knowledge.

Patriotism! We hear much about this word in recent days, weeks and months. Patriotism has many facets and should be practiced by every sin­ cere citizen.

In our SPJST Society all official meetings, at all levels, are convened with the Pledge of Allegiance to our U.S. Flag. All of our service personnel in the various branches of our armed forces certainly have always displayed devout patriot-patriotism, including the giving of their lives, including the recent Persian Gulf conflict, especial­ ly.

We hail the patriotism of our service personnel, however, this editor wonders about the "patriotism" of the U.S. citizens. Is patriotism reserved to be practiced by our armed service per­ sonnel only?

We are referring to the "patriotism" of our companies and their owners as well as officials who move overseas to open factories to manufacture goods with cheap foreign labor in oriental countries, etc. to be sold here in United States and forget all about our labor force here when most have lost their livelihood.

Where is the patriotism of these so­ called patriots? Is patriotism reserved for only certain ones? Think about this; this individual has been under the impression, · all through life, that true patriotism was the duty of all citizens, or do the almighty dollars or politics outshine patriotism in certain cases?

Why borrowers may need to hurry up --home buyers now in the process of getting a mortgage loan guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration should push to wrap it up by the end of the month. Come July 1, borrowers using FHA-backed loans can include only 57 percent of closing costs in the mortgage loan compared with 100 per­ cent now, so they will have to come up with more cash at the. closing. Some­ one buying a $100,000 home after July 1 who faces typical closing costs of $3,000 will have to pay 43 percent of it, or $1,290, out of pocket. For the first time, buyers also will have to pur­ chase mortgage insurance to protect the lender should they run into finan­ cial difficulties. Based on the FHA­ mandated annual premium of 0.5 percent of the remaining.principal and a mortgage rate of 1 O percent, that would add about $29 to the monthly payment on a $100,000 home.

District FAC Workshops

The results of the fraternal services were mailed to the National Fraternal Congress (NFC). We are pleased to have 99 lodges of the total of 117 lodges to send us their reports. We thank the officers and members from these lodges. We would like to have a report from all the lodges. Once again, we remind you, that you should be keeping these records for us. If not, would you please be so kind and start today!

A workshop of the FAC's of each district was held at the Home Office on June 15, 1991.

The District FAC's were informed of the missions and goal objectives, most of the District FAC's stated they would be willing to work with other lodges in their district.

Fraternal services were covered and district meetings, contests and a brainstorming session on what ways they feel they could help other lodges in their districts.

In attendance were Susan Bolech (District VI), Randy Gaas (District I), George Pauling (District III), Elizabeth Walther (District IV), Glen Pruski (District VII); also present were Franklin Bolech, Lodge 17 FAC Clarence Sefcik, Mary Huebner (sub­ stitues FAC from District IV), District I President Ben Trcalek, Jr. and Dis­ trict I Director Andrew Vavra, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and State FAC Frank Klinkovsky. Uncorrected Minutes Of Spring District VI Meeting The spring meeting of District VI SPJST was held at the Victoria Community Center in Victoria on April 28, 1991 with Lodge No. 32,Victoria as hosts.

The meeting was called to order by District President Annie Vahalík at 1 :30 p.m. The colors were presented and the Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Jared Dybala and Brian Kutac.

Victoria Lodge President Mike Ahlstrom welcomed everyone to the meeting and said everyone was l~oking forward to the 1992 Convention, which will be held in Victoria. Distri~t First Vice President Jo Ann Fuchik responded. .

District FAC Jeff Chunda mtroduced the following guests: Supreme ~odge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska and wife, Dorothy! Di~trict Dire~tor Matt Vanek and his wife, He~eritta; and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes Director Erwin H~ly .and his wife, Evelyn.

All district offic~rs responded to the roll call of offl~ers, except Fl~g Bearers Kendra Richardson ~nd Enc Motal. Absent from the standmg committees were Jero~e Hlavaty of the Insurance Committee and Albert Olsovsky, substitute for the Finance Committee. Twelve lodges answered the roll call of lodges. .

The district secretary read the hst of 50-year members. A.J. {Tony) Kelner was present.

District FAC Jeff Chunda read the list of Fraternalists of the Year from the district: Ben?i~ Reck of Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje; and those present were Frank Hahn of Lodge No. 148, El Maton; Joseph Nazval of Lodge No. 28, East Bernard; and Ella Arnold of Lodge No. 32, Victoria.

The minutes were read and approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer A.J. {Tony) Kelner gave the following treasurer's report; on March 25, 1990, there was a balance of $447.80 in the General Expense Fund. There was a check from Supreme Lodge for $3,746.50, expenses totaled $3,306.50, leaving a balance after the spring meeting of $887.80. For the fall meeting, there was a $558.50 deposit, expenses totaled $918.50, leaving a balance on April 27, 1991 of $527 .80.

The Auditing Committee had audited the books and found everything in order.

District Youth Counselor Anita Roye said two new youth clubs· in the district had been started - one in· Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville with Gaynell Chudej and Evelyn Holy as youth leaders and one in Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home with Susan Bolech as youth leader. In the Youth Fund, there was a balance of $1,458.42. Income was $2,946.50; expenses were $1,834.84, leaving a balance of $2,570.08 In the Camp Fund, income

was $2,588.02, expenses were $2,865.16. To make up this difference, $277.14 was taken from the Youth Fund and transferred over, leaving a balance as of April 28, 1991 of $2,292.94.

The Supreme Lodge report was given by Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. He brought greetings from the Supreme Lodge and said if there were ever any questions, members should call the Home Office on the Watts line. All departments were watching the budget and expenses were leveling off. New programs that are in the planning stages were the recognition of 100 percent SP~ST families and the 75-year member pins.

Adolph Bordovsky of Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home would soon be 96 years old and would get his paid-up policy. , The convention would be held June 14-17, 1992 and convention committees would begin to function soon. He concluded by saying mortgage loans were available and were a good invest­ ment for the SPJST. Director Matt Vanek requested to give his report under new business.

Rest Homes Director Erwin Holy brought greetings from the other direc­ tors Recent receptions had been held for Mrs. Schwenker, retiring adminis­ tator of the Taylor rest home and Sid Pokladník, retiring director from District III. Woody Richards had been hired to replace the Taylor ad­ ministrator. Director Holy said rates may have to be raised for private-pay patients because they must be charged the same as welfare patients. Welfare patients receive from $43 to $~9 a day, depending on need, while private-pay are charged $51 · otherwise some money may have t~ be returned to the state. The roof may have to be replaced in Taylor. A letter from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes President Balusek was read regarding contribu­ tions for a new piano. Rest Homes Director Holy concluded by saying that both homes were financially in good shape and both are full with a waiting list.

Leona Macha of the By-Law Committee reminded everyone to start thinking about the convention. Article 20 of the By-laws states the deadline for turning in by-law changes but she recommended that everyone submit these changes as soon as possible, for the committee meetings will be held earlier. Be sure you sign your recom­ mendations and put the article number on it.

The Insurance Committee had no report.

Sophie Dybala of the Publication Committee asked members to contact her with any questions or comments about the Vestnik.

The Finance Committee had no report.

There was no old business.

Under new business, District VI Director Matt Vanek gave his report.

He presented checks to the district $250 for YAD, $800 for General Ex­ pense Fund $2,649.50 for Youth Fund.

Mrs. Ed Sralla, w~fe . of deceas.ed former director of District 6, was m­ troduced. The top four- sales repre­ sentatives were Albert Olsovsky, Annimae Merta, Olga Steffek and Jerome Hlavaty. Director Vanek then spoke about the upcoming 1992 State Convention. Only seven lodges had responded to the April 1989 le!ter re­ questmg volunteers to help with the convention: East Bernard, El Campo­ Hillje, Moravia, Placedo, Sweet Home, Taiton and Westhoff for a total of 42 volunteers. Tentative opening day ac­ tivities would consist of a group pic­ ture at 8:30 a.m., flag ceremony at

9:00 a.m. and opening the convention at 9:30 a.m. with dignitaries from the local area. Director Vanek said he had obtained one bid for the printing of the brochure. Some money may be needed up-front to pay for the printing of this brochure. A Planning Committee meet­ ing was set for June 11, 1991 at the El Campo-Hillje SPJST Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. The secretary was to send a letter to the Vestnik announcing the meeting.

Final plans were made and commit­ tees named for our Annual Family Day to be held Sunday, July 14 at St. Mary's Hall west of Hallettsville. The date was changed from the second Sunday in August due to another SPJST event that day. A social hour will begin at 12 o'clock with a bar­ becue brisket and sausage dinner with trimmings to be served at 12:30 p.m. with a small charge as usual. Minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

Youth Leader Louise Burney gave her report, announced the visitors at the youth meeting, and told them to come back often.

Unfinished business discussed by Sister Burney was Six Flags, needing more money, and having more cake walks. She told us we would pay for all youth members to get into Six Flags and one parent. June 22 and 29 were scheduled for cake walks and plans are to have 5 cakes at each one.

She also said YAD was June 23 at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, and some would have craft and talent entries.

Queen nominee would be Brandy Mc­ Farland and Duchess Charlene Stead.

She ordered all the camp T-shirts for everyone.

The youth members passed out key chains to their dad for Father's Day. They were made prior to the meeting by the youth.

To All Our Friends And Fellow Members: Seaton Star Hall, Lodge No. 47 will have a special guest this Friday, June 21 for the monthly Friday night social.

He is a fantastic person and I can assure you, you will enjoy yourself. It makes no difference if you know how to dance or not, you will enjoy the fun in doing this with Mr. Wilson.

We also plan to hold CPR classes at Lodge No. 47 in the near future and I need to know. how many of you would be interested. The cost would be $25.00 per person, but this would in­ clude all books. It will cover adult, children and infants. Anyone inter­ ested in taking these classes should let me know as soon as possible so that I may set the date.

Secretary Glen Latham read the minutes from the May meeting. They were approved as read. ' President Rohde thanked all who worked at making our annual picnic a success. All the workers had a good time and we hope that everybody who attended had a good time.

A thank you card was also received from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor for the $100.00 donation toward the purchase of a new piano.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Although our regular monthly meet­ ing on Sunday, June 16, 1991 coin­ cided with Father's Day, we had a good attendance of thirty-one mem­ bers. Dinner at 12:00 noon consisted of fried and baked chicken, furnished by the lodge and, as always, a wide variety of delicious vegetables, salads and desserts prepared by the good cooks of our lodge. Thanks to all who brought food and thanks also to Mary Werner for bringing the chicken and making the dressing and gravy.

At 1 :00 p.m. President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Al­ legiance, led by Benita Walzel, we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our departed Brother Terry Urbanek.

A warm welcome is extended to Lydia Hortman who was accepted into

Lodge No. 81 as a social member.

Lydia is no stranger to SPJST. She has many, many hours of volunteer service in Needville S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II to her credit.

All officers were present, and their reports were accepted as follows: Minutes of the May meeting and finan­ cial secretary's report by Mary Werner, treasurer's report by Willie Mae Kuykendall, and special fund report by Gilbert Walzel.

Correspondence read by Secretary Werner was a letter of thanks from Jennifer Foyt, recipient of Lodge No. 81 scholarship.

Thomas Kuykendall, Kathleen Gajevsky and Mary Werner are on our sick list. Margie Krenek of Pleak Vil­ lage is recovering from an auto acci­ dent. Tonnie Orsak has joined her husband, Ed Orsak, as a resident of Wharton Manor . Nursing and Con­ valescent Center in Wharton, Texas.

Our best wishes go to all these mem­ bers for progress in their recovery.

Under business tabled from the May meeting members voted to send a con­ tribution to the residents' activity fund of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor, Texas. Monetary contributions will also be sent to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville and the Richmond State School in Richmond, Texas. Our lodge is also continuing to sponsor a local Little League Baseball Team the -- The Reds.

Following discussion of our scholar­ ship program, members voted that ap­ plicants for Lodge No. 81 scholarships must be either: (1) Members of Lodge No. 81 or (2) Seniors of Needville High School. Non-members who apply must be enrolled in the senior class of Needville High School only, but Lodge No. 81 members applying may be enrolled in any area high school.

The purchase of additional property by the lodge was briefly discussed and then the matter was dropped.

Under new business, it was decided to invite the two 1991-1992 scholar­ ship recipients Jennifer Foyt and Amy Klinkovsky and their parents to our July meeting to be held on Sunday, July 21, 1991 at 12:00 noon. The lodge will furnish fried and baked chicken, and members will complete the menu with vegetables, salads and desserts.

President Macha read a letter from Brother Howard Leshikar, President of the Supreme Lodge. The letter stressed the important role that publicity and good public relations can play in making the communities around us aware of the fact that our lodge is in­ deed active in making our community a better place in which to live. The let­ ter also reminded us to have upcoming special occasions listed in the Vestnik's Special Events Calendar.

Door prize winners were Darlene Blinka, Vincent Joe Newman, Victor Werner and Louise Newman.

Sister Vlasta Nowotny, accompanied by her daughters and son-in-law, Joyce and Roy Crum, returned recently from an enjoyable stay "in New York City.

Highlight of the trip was a tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island where she, at a very young age, arrived with her parents as European im­ migrants to the United States. In­ scribed on the Wall of Honor she viewed the name "Osvald Valka Fami­ ly."

Listed on school honor rolls for the final six weeks of school were Rosen­ berg members Aron and Brandon Blinka, Kristy and Clinton Jablonski.

Needville students listed were Corey Walzel, Bradley and Jason Vallet, Cheryl, Amanda and Lynnette New­ man.

Sheryl Macha, daughter of Adolph and Delores Macha was named to the distinguished students list at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She is now home for the summer.

Congratulations to our member, John Petrusek, a 1991 graduate of Needville High School. He has been awarded scholarships from Wharton County Junior College and the WCJC Boosters Club. John, the son of John and Bever­ ly Petrusek of Needville, will be majonng in accounting.

Young members completing Little League baseball season in Rosenberg are Kristy and Clinton Jablonski.

In Needville, cousins Corey Walze! and Jason Vallet are members of a powerful baseball team vying for the championship. These boys are so es­ sential to their team that they will in­ terrupt their stay at Boy Scout Camp at Camp Strake and return to play in the championship game. Then back to Camp Strake to continue their Boy Scout activities.

Lynnette Newman will attend the ATF State Invitational Twirling Meet in Austin on June 21 and 22. Eight­ year-old Lynnette performed some of her twirling routines for us at our meeting.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Birthday Club The Birthday Club met on June 12, 1991 in the lodge dining room at 11 :20 a.m. The meeting was called to order

by President Lowrina Lindemann after which she called the roll. The atten­ dance was acceptionally good. We are so proud of the ladies who are so inter­ ested in the 45-year-old club. The late Mrs. Frances Olexa was the organizer of this fine club and, of course, there were many others who were hard workers. I had a list of some of these sisters, but I dare not name them for fear I'll insult someone. Most all of you remember who they were. One day when I can get a complete list I'll send in the names. The ladies worked all day Saturday and Sunday baking those delicious kolaches and the goulash was the best. The recipe must have gotten • lost because it seems no one knows how to make it, anymore. I recall Mrs. Svacina who was an ace goulash cook.

Anyway these ladies helped us keep : the lodge going during the hard times.

Evelyn Mikolas, our ticket chairman, has had eye surgery. We missed you today, but well experienced in this job is Clara Jecmenek, and she did very well. Annie Svestka is in the hospital.

Birdie Pech has been very ill, and Syl­ via Melia had surgery.

Chairman of the project tickets, Wil­ lie Mae Ermis, gave her report which was great. We thank all the ladies who helped her and also the donors, who will receive thank you notes.

Lodge No. 148, El Maton Lodge 148 of El Maton held their an­ nual barbecue dinner at the Catholic Hall in Blessing, Texas for their mem­ bers on June 1, 1991. We are proud to announce that 299 members attended.

All officers and some members as­ sisted with serving the meal for the members.

We had two guest speakers, Brother Jerome Hlavaty and Brother Matt Vanek, who gave very nice speeches.

After the meal, Olga Steffek assisted with giving out door prizes to the members.

Ladies Circle, Fort Worth Our Lodge No. 92 Ladies Circle meeting on June 11, 1991 opened with the members singing "The Star Spangled Banner."

President Clara Cohen introduced a new member, Mary Jane Kane, and guests Mona Hattendorf, Irene Heitzman, Ima Lou La Plante, Linda and Gloria Rangel and Theresa Clay who joined us for luncli. It's always nice to see new faces at our meetings.

Reading of the minutes by the secretary showed one omission which was corrected and approved. The treasurer' s report was filed as read.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillan gave a report on the sick members, which included Tillie Gillis who was in a nursing home, briefly, but will be at home with nurse's care. Mac Mc­ Millan is doing fine with his recently acquired pacemaker. Alma Anderson's daughter, and Roberta Peters are ill.

Ida Garrett is home from the hospital after serious surgery, and will be recuperating for a while.

On a happier note, Julia Dueser proudly announced that her son, Dr. Raymond Dueser of Logan, Utah is in the process of adopting three siblings, ages 6, 11 and 12. It's an exciting time for the family and we 're happy for them.

Hostesses for July will be Florence Greer, Flora Koci, Imogene Reeves, Mary Palachek and Lydia Palachek.

DallaS Circle Of Czech Women Our June meeting was called to order

by President Bertha Podhrasky. Adell Vlk led us in the pledge to the flag and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Mary Petr Nesuda (who had been a member of "Krouzek" for 50 years), Hana Oates (daughter of Diane Oates and granddaughter of Helen Oates and Mildred Chervenka), Ed Chmelar (father-in-law of Ruth Chmelar) and Olga Valcik Pokladník (sister-in-law of Justine Pokladnik and daughter of our late Sister Bozena Valcik).

Bertha welcomed 36 members, 15 men guests and Vojteska Janicek (Bertha's mother) and Brian Johnson (grandson of Dorothy Reznik).

Our minutes of the May meeting could not be read due to the illness of Bessie Reames.

Milton Nesuda came to our meeting and read a letter to the Krouzek saying how much his mother, Mary, enjoyed the meetings. He expressed apprecia­ tion for the Krouzek and thanked everyone who worked and brought food for the kitchen for the meal after the services. He also thanked everyone for the sympathy cards sent . to the family. He gave a check to the Krouzek for $150.00 in memory of his mother, Mary Petr Nesuda, from the family of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Nesuda, Ella Natchigal and Mr. and Mrs. Al­ bert Nesuda.

Correspondence included a thank you card from Rita Klimova for the plaque we gave her at the reception. A thank you from Sokol Zizka for the check to the building fund for im­ provement of Sokol Zizka kitchen. A letter from the Petr family and $60.00 check in memory of our loving "Teta" Mary (Petr) Nesuda who was a mem­ ber of the Krouzek for 50 years. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, Annie (Petr) Zapalac, Mary K (Petr) and Emil Mancell, Flos­ sie (Petr) Vita, Wanda and Charlie Petr, Mary and Frank Petr, Emma (Petr) Toupal, Libbie (Petr) Pavelka, Bessie and Emil Petr, Annie and Edwin Petr. A thank you card from the Mary Nesuda family for the dinner. A booklet "Texas Chair and Czech Studies" by Justine Pokladník. Also Membership Committee - Bertha Malik received a letter and dues for Georgia Long. She reported that her sister, Milded Voss, had a stroke.

From Head of The Youth Denartment June Czech Project Jan Amos Komenský Jan Amos Komensky, who was born in Moravia, Czechoslovakia on March 28, 1592, became an internationally famous educator, scholar, author, philosopher and theologian. He left Moravia after the defeat of the Moravians by the Hapsburgs at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 when 36,000 families were forced to leave their homes.

Komenský wrote 200 books on a variety of subjects and was a true "Renaissance man." Two of his greatest books are: "Gate of Languages Unlocked," which introduced a modern approach to language and compared the Czech and Latin languages side by

side. And "The Visible World in Pic­ tures," which was the first illustrated textbook and was popular throughout Europe for 200 years.

Komenský spread his educational reforms throughout Europe. He urged universal education for boys and girls, teaching in the local language, methods using drawings and examples, physical education, health education, vocational education and the use of drama in schools. (Imagine all this before the American Revolution!)

Jan Amos Komenský was known as "The Great Moravian." He was invited to be the president of Harvard College, but declined because he had been asked to establish a new educational system in Sweden. This famous Czech almost became an American!

THE YOUTH ALSO had an opportunity to ride horses while at LIT Workshop.

The Leaders-in-Training (LIT) workshop was held for the active teens with great success and also was a large turnout of fifty-one teens in atten­ dance.

This LIT workshop is designed to in­ struct the teens on all the different ac­ tivities that will be used during the summer camping period.

The accompanying photos depict the wide range of instructions that they received.

In addition to all these activities, we. had a very informative class on drug and alcohol abuse by two paramedics from Austin. Their presentation was called the "Star Flight Program" and they provided an outstanding program.

The main purpose of their program was alcohol abuse by the teens of today. They wanted to instill, in every teenager, these five words: "If you drink don't drive." They stated that, if you don't remember "anything else we said," please remember those five words.

The entire workshop went well. A big THANK YOU to all youth mem­ bers for attending and to all DYC's for their help.

Dear Members and Friends, The youth club had their meeting on May 31, 1991 and had a good atten­ dance. The lodge hall was rented out on June 2nd.

The youth took cakes to West Rest Haven on June 5 and also worked on their scrapbook, had gifts for the fathers and door prizes for all who were present.

Our mother lodge gave the youth leader and assistant youth leader jack­ ets so they should put their patch, stars and pins on them. We want to thank the members very much for these jack­ ets. It was so nice of them and we also want to thank SPJST Supreme Lodge for the patch, stars and pins. I am very proud of them. Thank you, again.

We were getting ready at our lodge for YAD, which will be in the past when this letter is printed; hopefully, everything turned out fine and many of you were there.

Youth camp will be held July 15, 16, 17 and 18 at Camp Val Verde.

Our Lodge No. 6 picnic will be held July 21 and the youth club will have a fish pond, games, and cake walk so we will be needing cakes for the cake walk.

Birthday celebrants for July will be James Hromadka, Kayla Hromadka and Assistant Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka.

Lodge No.17, New Tabor Youth Activities Dear Readers, The New Tabor Youth Club had a very busy start to 1991. At the January meeting, all youth present worked on an entry for the T-shirt design contest.

In February, we had a Valentine Party and made a Valentine craft. Lodge FAC Clarence Sefcik spoke to the youth club about helping sell tickets for the upcoming fund-raiser. The youth also participated in a fund-raiser to support the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Dear Readers, The June 9, 1991 meeting of Lodge No. 24 Youth Club was called to order at 5: 10 p.m. by Vice President Carl Macek.

Tammy Baker led the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the flag and members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer. Then the SPJST Youth Club Pledge was recited.

The register was read and there were ten members. and two adults present.

We were proud to have Patsy Baker as our guest.

Jeffrey Ashcraft gave the treasurer's report and the balance is $384.92.

Our Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft reported on the bake sale which turned out great and the social at Lions Park, June 30th.

We installed our officers, they are: President Steve Bruggman, Vice Presi­ dent Carl Macek, Secretary Jeffrey Posvar, Treasurer Jeffrey Ashcraft, Reporter Jennifer Ashcraft, Sergeant­ at-Arms Danny Baker.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:40 p.m.

After the meeting, youth members enjoyed having punch and cookies served by our youth leader.

We would also like to thank Melanie Zavodny for all of her help and wish her the best in the future.

The highlight of the day's events was a Salute to the Troops presented by 30 youth club members. Poems, recita­ tions and skits were presented by various youth. The entire youth club then sang several patriotic songs in­ cluding "God Bless The USA." The youth of Lodge No. 17 plan on having a very busy summer with a swimming party, a garage sale, YAD, camp and a trip to Schlitterbahn.

IRENE VORNSAND, of Schulenburg, Texas, who passed away April 29, 1991 in a Houston hospital at the age of 61 months, 4 months and 11 days.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Schulen­ burg, with Rev. Carol Prochaska of­ ficiating. Interment followed in the Schulenburg City Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Wal­ lace Vornsand of Schulenburg; three sons, Daniel Vornsand of Richmond, Allen of Hallettsville and Glen of Schulenburg; five sisters, Elsie Dusek, Evelyn Sklar, Stella Blaha and Her­ mina Vasek of Hallettsville and Lucy Ubnoski of Navasota; one brother, Al­ bert Melnar of Cat Springs; and three grandchildren.

Brother Hugh is survived by his wife, Sarah Sullivan of Robinson and one brother, A.L. Sullivan of Fort Worth.

Brother Sullivan was a veteran of World War II of the Army Air Corps.

He was retired as a salesman for Ster­ ling Motor Company and A.J. Mahaf­ fey Real Estate and Finance Company.

He was a charter member of Robinson Drive United Methodist Church, where he served on all boards of the church.

He was also a member of American Legion Post 121 and Pythians. He had been a member of SPJST since Sep­ tember 1966.

Kevin was the recipient of the Micek Scholarship from CESA T (Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas) in 1989-90 and 1990-91, and the Kosciuszko Foundation in 199091. He was awarded fellowships for summer 1991 and academic year 199192 from the Center for Soviet and East European Studies at UT-Austin.

He plans to teach Slavic languages and history upon completion of his Ph.D. His teaching interests are: West Slavic, Czech, Slovak, Polish and the Russian language.

By Sue Stevens Lifestyle Editor He 's been a gas station attendant, a handicapped teenager, a brilliant young scientist, a nerdy flower shop worker, a rising young business execu­ tive, a gifted composer, an all­ American songwriter, even a rabbit...the list goes on and on.

At age 27, actor B.J. Cleveland is a veteran of more than 150 stage shows, a movie and scores of television shows. Tomorrow night, he chalks up another career milestone: He is direct­ ing Crimes of the Heart, which will run through June 8 at Theatre Arlington.

"This project is my first big baby," said Cleveland, director of shows for Six Flags and Astroworld, of directing the TA production.

"This is not just another show; it's coming at a time when the theater is in a major capital campaign (to raise over $1 million to purchase and renovate . the former Kier Lumber Company building on Main Street for its new home.)" he said. "I have felt a lot of pressure; the show has to be good."

While his directorial debut is yet to be judged, there is little doubt about Cleveland's acting ability. Stage West director Jerry Russell worked with a 12-year-old Cleveland in A Thousand Clowns at Scott Theatre in Fort Worth nearly 15 years ago and has followed his career since then.

B.J. has an absolute sparkle: He has a very special way of com­ municating with the audience,11 Rus­ sell said. 11 He was born to the stage; there's no doubt about it. He has proved it over and over again.11 Cleveland may have been born to the stage, but he wasn't born B.J. 11

He started out as Bobby Joe Cleveland, born to Carolyn and Bob Cleveland 10 months after their mar­ riage at age 16 and 18.

"I grew up with them. Now we have bypassed the parent-child relationship into best friends," he said.

With such young parents, he grew up in the company of all his grandparents, most of his great-grandparents and lots of other doting relatives. For four years, until sister was born, he had the whole group to himself.

"They all loved reading to me," he said. "My favorite book was Dr. Suess' Go Dog Go. I knew every word and if they dropped one line, I knew it."

"I had my first script memorized at a very early age," he said, smiling at his own story, with a typically-B.J. twinkle in his eyes.

That early love of reading made a lasting impression. Cleveland just closed in a Casa Manana Children' s show where he once again had to run in darkness down the same ramp where he broke his leg -- which he admits was a bit scary the first time.

Between casting and starting rehears­ als for Crimes of the Heart, he filmed television commercial spots for Disney on lee and the new E.T. Adventure ride at Universal Studios in California.

And then there are his two regular jobs: administrative assistant at Theatre Arlington and host of KTVT Television's children show B.J. and the Super Ones. The show is seen all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. The day of his interview with Arlington News, Cleveland received a fan letter from a child who watches the show in her home in Grand Cayman.

Although he admits to a surge of ex­ citement on the stages at Universal Studio, where he filmed the commer­ cial for the E.T. ride and where, ear­ lier, he filmed roles in the television series The Facts of Life and movie Streamers for director Robert Altman, he has no urge to head for Hollywood.

He i~ very close to his family and, thus far, pleased with plying his craft in this area. He plans to work at Casa Manana in the musical this summer, and says he will look at opportunities as they come. He is certain he will eventually go on tour again or work in California, but "my roots are here," he said.

Cleveland has found directing is a great switch, one which allows him to be a teacher, to pass on some of the good training he has had.

"If I were ever not acting or in the theater, I would teach," he said.

He is keenly aware of the role model factor iĎ his children's television show and, in his personal contacts with children, attempts to give them ap­ proval and encouragement.

"For many of these kids, I am like a big brother: Sometimes it's a little hard -- like when you go into Denny' s at midnight to eat after a show, and you have teenagers screaming at you or trying to shop at the mall and being stopped every five feet -- but I know being host of a children' s show is a serious responsibility and it's impor­ tant that I respond in a positive way to those kids," he said.

Both Main Street Theatre in Mansfield and OnStage in Bedford have approached Cleveland about directing projects for the coming season, but he says frankly that good acting opportunities are his top priority.

As the countdown accelerates for the opening of Crimes, of the Heart, he is confident that he has a good, solid show. He had 98; actors audition for the six-character show: an usual turn­ out for an unproved director.

Pravidelnou schůzi našeho řádu zahájil president Ted Kocián a přivítal všechny přítomné členy a členky.

Vzdali jsme ú.ctu naší vlajce a za poslední čtvrtletí nás nikdo z členstva neopustil, jsme za to vděční.

Sekretářka Ann Emeryová přečetla zápis z poslední schůzea byl přijat tak, jak byl čten. Dále uvedla, že dostala dopisy se žádostí o pomoc při sehnání piána pro dům odpočinku a pozvání k návštěvě Hlavní úřadovny.

Finančí sekretářka sestra Maxine Šefčíková přečetla její zprávu a získali jsme dvě členky: Edwina Matušová jako dospělá a Holly Lyonsová jako členka mládeže. Další tři členové si zvýšili pojistku. Dále uvedla skutečnost, že náš prodávající agent Freddie Kaluža je velmi pilný a již po dva měsíce po sobě je jeden z nejlepších ve třetím okrsku. Je potřeba, aby naši členove a členky mu zavolali a oznámili zájemce o naše pojištění, které je jedno z nejlepšíchve státě.

President Ted Kocián přečetl finanční zprávu za bratra Kalužu, který byl mimo město v době naší schůze. Ze zprávy vyplývá, že mámě dobrou částku dolarů v bankách.

Dne 15. června 1991 ve tři hodine odpoledne členové a členky našeho řádu navštíví v domě odpočinku sestru Terezii Markovou, která se dožila 96 roků a ředitel 3.okrsku bratr Sid Pokladník předá peněžitou odměnu při této slavnostní příležitosti.

Sestra Maxine Šefčíková přečetla také zprávu o dobrovolné činnosti a darech na dobročinné účelyod členstva u našeho řádu a bylo to hodně času i peněz, které se nasbíraly.

Připomenula, že je potřeba pečlivě zapisovat veškeré dary.

President Kocián poukázal na novu úpravu vzhledu síně od našeho poslednfho setkání, zvláště je nutno pochválit sokolskou jednotu, že se snažízařídit všechnoku prospěchu naší síně. V tomto případě byla přemístěna kuchyně do zadní části síně a tím se získal prostor pro asi 150 lidí a rovněž prostor v kuchyni se zlepšila kuchařky mají nyní větší pohodlí při přípravě jídla a návštěvníci je neruší při práci, jak to bylo doposud. Vyjádřil politování, že oslavenci, kteří měli ob­ držet odznaky jako členovépo padesát let u naší jednoty se nedostavili.

Bratr Jan Vaculík vyhrál losování a přítomní členovéa členkypak zůstali v družné besedě při občerstvení a prohlédli si úpravy síně.

Mezitím již přišel den, kdy jsme oslavili narozeniny sestry Terezie Markové v domě odpočinku a oslava se konala za veliké účasti příbuzenstva a přítomni byli i úředníci od našeho řádu a ředitel 3. okrsku Sid Pokladník.

Sestra Marková je ještě v dobrém tělesném stavu a dožívá podzim svého života ve velmi příjemném prostředí za péče početného příbuzenstva.

Matka liška.

Celýměsícse nám již ztrácelyslepice velmi tajemným způsobem. Byly odnášeny v tu chvíli, sotva usedlyvečer do kurníku nebo jakmile jej zrána opouštěly. Kdyby je byl zakusoval tchoř nebo lasice, byly by po nich zůstaly zbytky. Nikde však se senašlo ani kůstky ani peříčka. Z toho bylo vidět, že je může odnášet jen ferina lišák.

Nedaleko našeho dvora tekla řeka a za ní se táhl veliký jehličnatý les. U samé řeky jsem zpozoroval několik liščích stop a pruhované pero jedné z našich slepic. Přebrodil jsem řeku a hledal jsem na druhém břehu, zdali tam pokračují liščí stopy. Vtom bylo slyšet pronikavé krákání vran. Ohlédl jsem se a spatřil jsem, jak se prostředkem řeky brodí lišák a nese v zubech slepici. Vrány na něho doráže­ ly, neboť byly by ze slepice také něco rády měly.

Jak mě lišák spatřil, upustil slepicia zmizel v lese.

Lišák nám chocil na slepice pravidelně každý den a vždycky je odnášíval za řeku do lesa. Proto jsem se domníval, že má doma celou rodinu malých lišek, a umínil jsem si, že liščí rodinu najdu.

Toho večerajsem se odebral se svým loveckým psem Rigem přes řeku do lesa. Sotva pes začal hledat, uslyšel jsem v houští docela na blízku krátké liščízavrčení. Rigo se tam ihned pustil.

Našel čerstvou stopu a hnal se po ní.

Po marném honění se asi za hodinu vrátil. Byl celý udýchán a usedl mi k nohám. Ale v tom okamžiku se ozvalo právě vedlenás nové liščízavrčenía pes se dal znova na honbu.

Hnal se za liškou a jeho štěkot se tratil v dálce.

Dlouho jsem čekal v temnémjiž lese, než se Rigo opět vrátil. Byl zcela vysílen. Jazyk mu visel skoro až na zem, z huby mu tekla pěna, těžce dýchal a pot mu kapal s prsou a boků.

Chvilku se na mne podíval a lízal mně ruku, pak sebou hodil na zem a ocpočíval s hlasitým funěním.

Vtom se ozvaloznova rozčilujícíliščí zavrčeníjen na několik metrů ode mne.

Vše se mi najednou vyjasnilo. Stáli jsme u samého doupěte, v němž byly mladé lišky, a staří nás chtěli od něho odvésti.

Zatím nastala temná noc. Odešel jsem domů, protože jsem již věděl, kam odnáší liška slepice.

Všichni z nás byli přesvědčeni, že někde nablízku má své doupě starý lišák s rodinou. Ale nikoho nenapadlo, že by mohl být tak blízko.

Tento lišák měl na hlavě zvláštní znamení, podle kterého jsme ho vždycky dobře poznali. Byla to hluboká jízva od oka k uchu, která mu zarostla bílou srstí. Myslilo se, že se poranil ostnatým drátem na lovu za zajícem.

Lišáka s bílým pruhem jsem znal již slepici. Tiše zavolala a drobotina se od loňského roku. Po prvé jsem se s vybatolila. ním setkal loni v zimě a poznal jsem Mláďata se vrhla na slepici, trhala ji hned, jak je chytrý a lstivý. a porážela se přes ni. Liščata se pokoušela dělati to po matce. A když se nejstaršímu liščeti také podařilo chytit jednu myšku -- po prvé v jeho životě -- chvělo se radostným rozčilením a zakouslo divoce do myši ostré zoubky.

Další cvičení v chytání živých zvířat provedla stará liška na veverce, která žila docela nablízku liščího doupěte.

Veverka poskakovala stále ve větvích stromů a posmívala se liškám. Liščata se mnohokrát marně pokoušela chytit ji, když veverka přebíhala mýtinou od stromu ke stromu nebo když se jim posmívala a prskala na ně před samým nosem. Stará liška však na ni vyzrála.

Ukryla děti a položila se na břicho uprostřed mýtiny. Dotěrná veverka přišla a prskala na lišku jako obyčejně.

Ale liška nehnula ani chloupkem.

Veverka přišla blíž a spustila na ni z plného hrdla: "Ty darebo, ty ničemo!" · Ale liška ležela jako mrtvá. Tomu se veverka divila, prudce seskočila a ubíhala mýtinou k jinému stromu.

JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.

In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other mea_ns something else.

SPRAVA-ZPRAV A Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different mean­ ings. It is therefore important that we

know how to spell the one we - wish to use.

SPRÁV A- means administration, or SPRÁVKA, which is a repair; or SPRAVITI, which means to fix or to repair.

Ex.: Státní správá je umístěna v Austině.
