Saturday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre Hermann Park in Houston, the Accordion Kings will perform at its second annual ap­ pearance at Miller Theater, but with an entirely fresh line-up of musicans for 1991 including Lee Roy Matocha Or­ chestra from Fayetteville. Dancing in the theater's orchestra pit will be en­ couraged which is free to the public sponsored by the Texas Folklife Resources - a statewide, non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the folk arts and folklife of the Lone Star State.

We need leaders of the type who are willing to put principle above personal ambition or selfish interest. Leaders who will stand four-square against all wrong and uphold principles which they know to be right.

However, we need more than leaders.

In this land where every individual holds sovereign power the leaders will be no more and no less than the masses demand. We are the rulers. All have a part and a responsibility. The responsibility cannot be shifted, it maý be neglected, but it rests upon the shoulders of each individual just the same.

We need men and women who will take the duties, responsibilities, privileges, and ' opportunities of popular government seriously. We, the people, are the Republic. It is for us to say what America's future will be.

It is to the youth of our land that we look to determine what our future na­ tional character is to become and quite rightly, too. The youth of today are the citizens of tomorrow; and never forget thac our future national character is to be derived not from the rich alone, or the poor alone, not from the city alone, or the country alone, but from every single individual ,in our nation, from the highest to the lowest, from every grade of society from the alatial . Lodge NO.. 6, Cottonwood Lodge No.. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, May 12, 1991 at Mr. Gatti's with President Annie Vahalik presiding. The youth club led the members in the pledge to the flag.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved.

Helen Zabransky gave the treasurer's report and FAC Gage Galetka read a newslet­ ter she had received about upcoming activities.

A report was given on the District VI spring meeting held in Victoria on April 28th. Annie Vahalik was re­ elected District VI president and Erwin Holy will again serve on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes' Board of Directors. It was also good to see our youth club taking part in the program and having a booth.

President Vahalik: announced that a pre-planning meeting will be held June 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Bl Campo for anyone interested in helping with the SPJST Convention to be held in Vic­ toria should try to attend.

Our annual Family Day will be held Sunday, July 14 at St. Mary's Dining Hall. Baster egg winners in age group O to 4 were Emma Straten, Traci Dobecka and Tye Williams. In ages 5 to 8 were Jared Orler, Jennifer Mechell and Frankie Lee Ondrej. In ages 9 to 12 were Brittney Halamík, Ricky Soukup and Betsy Straten. Sister Schuetz thanked everyone. They took baskets to the rest home. On April 7 was Youth Leaders' Training at Lodge 84, Dallas; April 14 was District III spring meeting at Lodge 154, Fort Worth. They worked on their scrap­ book and on Mother's Day items; June 23 will be District YAD at Lodge 6; on June 24 camp sheets are due; July 15 to 18 camp at Val Verde; August 18 is State YAD; on September 21 is fun day at Lodge 47, Seaton; Fraternal Fest at Belton on September 22; and June 7, 8 and 9 youth LIT at camp.

They are going to install two fans at the bar and they are going to install an air conditioner in the youth room.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News Evelyn and Milert Antrich have four lovely daughters, and every year, on Memorial Day weekend, the girls meet with their parents here in Houston, despite the distance between them.

That's so sweet. Two of the girls, Judy Phelps and Carolyn Morse, live in California; Vicky Gray is from Azle, Texas and Genevieve Yokem from Spring, Texas. The "neat" thing about this is they leave their husbands and children at home that weekend. As the saying goes: "They let their hair down."

While the girls were at home, they also traveled to Shiner, Flatonia and the big town of Cistern, where they visited with relatives, which was a joy to see everyone.

They also had a good time planning their parents' 50th anniversary for next year, 1992.

On May 25, 1991 Bruce Lindemann, the son of Karl and Lowrina Lin­ demann, married Nancy Utterback, the daughter of the late Ted Worthington and Norma Worthington from Car­ raton, Ohio.

Pastry Booth Chairman Lillie Spies had some wonderful pastry. Some of our ladies really brought some deli­ cious sweets. We could have sold more, but we sold out early. We thank all you ladies who helped Lillie and brought pastries.

The City Polka Boys played on the gazebo, right next to our beautiful pool. Then this orchestra played for our free dance from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Activity was plentiful and kept all of us very busy.

Roy Stonaker barbecued the brisket

and the trimmings were prepared in the Lodge 88 kitchen. The food was deli­ cious.

Social games were played from 2:00 to4:00p.m.

Before and after social games, Helen Hegwood had the spinning wheel for the officers and sales representatives, which was also ~I overwhelming suc­ cess. I would like to name the hard­ working people but unintentionally I'd miss someone who worked real hard.

That gets you in trouble! Thanks to everyone for their hard labor.

We always have some sad things to happen: Sunday morning, June 2, 1991 Edward John Sustala passed away real suddenly. He's survived by his wife, Addie, daughter, Joyce . Hubbard and sons, Edward and Dennis Sustala; 7 grandchildren; sisters, Mary Johnson and Annie Grissom; and one brother, Adolph. There were 13 children in this family and only 3 are left.

Aldine ISD Food Service Earns Award Aldine Independent School District's food service department has recently received the Standards of Excellent award from the Texas School Food Service Association.

A peer review team; comprised of school food service .directors from around the state, visited the district in April and evaluated the program.

Following the team's visit, their find­ ings were then presented to a steering committee which analyzed the team's report and bestowed the award.

CPR at Lodge No. 88, Houston

A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class was recently conducted at Lodge No. 88 by a member of the Houston Fire Department Local No. 341.

There were nine students in atten­ dance and the course was very interest­ ing and, most of all, was very educational.

Leaming CPR could possibly assist and even save a life for someone ex­ periencing a heart attack.

Mr. Larry Prince, the fire department instructor, has told me that many youngsters have taken this course.

This course could be very beneficial

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Just as the saying goes: "Time waits for no one." Here half of the year is gone and it seems as if not long ago we had freezing weather. Talking about the weather, it hasn't been bad, yet, because lots of rain and tempera­ tures haven't been too high, yet, but I am sure hotter weather is on the way.

These rains have made flowers beauti­ ful around our highways and wherever you look. (I noticed in the newspaper that, in the East, there's too much rain, then in the West too dry so it seems that the South could have good crops this · year. Cotton is supposed to be very good because the weather has cooperated thus far.)

The Performing Arts will be held in Washington, D. C. this week and I see that Texas is well· represented. The Vrazel Polka Band of Buckholts­ Cameron, Texas was invited to play.

We are proud of the Vrazel Band be­ cause they play very good Czech music and some country-western music as well. I noticed that Willie Nelson was to perform with them.

There were also some Mexican bands and country-western bands perform­ ing. Maybe some of them were on television news lately.

Speaking of music, our lodge will be having a hat contest dance on July 13, please make plans to attend. Try to make some type of hat from anything that is not nailed down or one that is very pretty; just ' have a hat that will make the dance something special.

The June 9 meeting was a nice one.

I Our president and fraternal coordinator were out-of-town so the reading of the Rules and Regulations was postponed until the next meeting.

The rules and regulations are a very important part of any lodge so this is something each member should study carefully to be familiar with them. The R&R Committee has gone over the old rules and regulations and they have added or changed some items so they will be read and members will be ex­ pected to vote "for" or "against" them. . . . . Then, if members w~t additions. or · change~made to them, ther can bnng them before the membership. Remember, each member had a right to propose their thoughts.

The local Rules and Regulations can­ not conflict with the SPJST Supreme Lodge By-laws, so members remember that our local rules and regulations will be read and toted on at our next meeting. Please try to attend and vote one way or the other.

The youth club also postponed their June 9 meeting because the youth leaders were at a meeting out of the city.

We are happy that our daughter, Carol Marie Everett, has been visiting us for a month and was able to attend our lodge meeting. She lives in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

I want to correct something I omitted from my last letter -- Mitchell Laymance graduated from A&I University. We voted on a few new and addition­ al insurance applicants, which were all accepted. Bee Adami finally joined our lodge; she has been attending all our activities for several years. Her husband, Bill, joined a while back. He told me that they enjoy the Vestnik.

Brother and Sister Davenport are really interested in our lodge and seem to want to help out whenever they are needed.

Our member, Brother. W.H. Mc­ Millen, had to have a pacemaker be­ cause he had problems with his heart.

He is doing fine and claims he feels better now than he has for a long time.

Brother and Sister McMillen attend many dances wherever Czech music is played in Texas as well as in other states.

I hope all the fathers bad a nice day on Father's Day and that the day was enjoyed being with their family.

Joyce and Frankie Tesar and their daughter, Corina, with the help of Kenneth and Mary Ann Krivanek, prepared a nice meal after our last meeting.

Remember, the next meeting on July 14 because it will be very important.

Tillie Koch read the minutes, presented the financial report and read correspondence, which included two congratulatory letters from the Supreme Lodge on being named a Top Producer of District VII for March 1991. Congratulations! We are proud of you.

Our 50-year member, Vlasta Pesek, was unable to attend our June meeting.

We look forward to her attendance in the near future.

Dear Members: How many of you are retired and you who are thinking of retiring in the near future have made the remark: "When I retire I will do this or that, etc., etc., or to take it easy and not have to work anymore"?

Let's take a good look at retirement: first - you quit your 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. regular job, the people at work give you a going-away party, wish you well, and tell you they also wished they could be going. Then you go out in the world doing a few things you have put off over the years to do when you retire and, before you know what happened, a year has gone by and you haven't done any of the things you said you were going to do.

Then, you stop everything and plan a weekend only to have illness or death in the family; then, you take care of the present situation and start, again, only to realize that your van needs in­ spection and some repairs before it will pass inspection.

By that time it's time for income tax return, again. While you backup and take a good look at things, you run to the store to get some drinks, get in the car, try to start it, and have the battery blow up. This means that you have to stop everything and call your friendly motor club and have a tow truck tow the car home and get the parts to get the car running again, and when you start to pay for the parts, they don't talk in dollars and cents anymore, they talk in hundreds of dollars.

By this time, you may have an aged mother who needs to be taken to the doctor and an uncle (who has had a stroke) and you have to take care of, so the fishing trip is off again. Now you sit down and try to figure out which job you need to do next since so many of them have piled up on you.

Now I ask you, again, did you really retire or just quit your regular job and become self-employed for a lot less pay than when you were working?

When I was a small boy, my grandfather always said that you could not teach an old dog new tricks, but guess who bas bought a new set of golf clubs and is taking lessons. I just heard that Inez Greenlees is playing golf two or three times a week, so maybe you don't get too old to learn something new. This is a changing world where every year, every month and every day you can learn something new. This is just one example; I am sure you can think of some more. No matter how old you are, a new born or a great­ grandparent, there are still somethings you can learn and- be able to do to make this a greaten world for all to live in.

It seems that the war in the Persian Gulf has come to an end and the mem­ bers of our armed forces are coming home, again. Let's hope that the na­ tions can bring this to a peaceful end and everyone can get back to their work and plan their future.

The nation is united more now than in a long time, so let's all SPJST mem­ bers take a good look at the organiza­ tion and pull together and build the

Good News From Lodge No. 191, Lufkin Just like that old song that Nat King Cole sang "I apologize." I do apologize. I accepted the job of report­ ing for this lodge, and have been lazy about it. Nonetheless, I was going to tell you about the Markus Haines bas­ ketball game that the lodge sponsored in February. You ask: What Game? I know it's been that long. But we did have a real good time. The attendance was real good. Thanks to a lot of people who put the program together and especially to the men and women who made up the team as well as played. There were lots of kids, and a good time was had by all.

Since then we have had a couple of work days, trying to finish the front foyer and we did finish part of the dance floor repairs.

We did extend the front patio and it sure does look good. We want to thank Larry Taylor and his crew for that job.

We've had dance lessons and, of course, our regular dances, lots of fun and real good gatherings.

Ronnie and Kathy have volun­ teered to be Lodge No. 191 youth leaders. Kathy grew up in the SPJST Youth Program at the lodge in Snook, Texas. She is knowledgable about the youth program and has the expertise to implement the program at our lodge.

Kathy feels this is an excellent oppor­ tunity to "pay us back" to the SPJST for the significant contribution the youth program made to the enjoyment of her early years. Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: This is a reminder of our July 3, 1991 luncheon. Lori Jurena-Lodge 63, Sweet Home ls U.S. Achievement Academy Winner The United States Academy has an­ nounced that Yoakum High School sophomore Lori Jurena is a national award winner in the field of mathe­ matics.

Lori is the daughter of Leon and Louise Jurena, Route 4, Yoakum and the granddaughter of Mrs. Rosie. Pav­ licek of Damon.

The award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to at­ tain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 1 O percent of all American High School students. As a result of the award, Lori will appear in the Academy's official yearbook, which is . published nationally.

She was nominated for the national award by Mrs. Nona Michaelsen, Al­ gebra I and II teacher at Yoakum High School.

The criteria for selection are a student's academic perfonnance, inter­ est and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, at­ titude and cooperative spirit, depend­ ability, and the recommendation by a teacher or director.

Jennifer was involved in many ex­ tracurricular activities this year. She was in the Drama Club and Pep Squad.

She will be on the Badger Brigade next year.

This year's summer activities include Six Flags and Surf 'n Swim.

Under new business, we are also looking into an "Adopt a Grandparent" program for our youth club.

Monday by Msgr. George Doskocil in Kotch Funeral Home Chapel in West, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, West, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, West.

Brother Prasifka was bom August 2, 1905 near Ennis, Texas. He moved to West in 1947, where he was employed as a salesman .for West Flour Mills for over 20 years. He also worked several years a.s a salesman for Ideal Hatchery of Cameron, Texas. He subsequently was self-employed selling commercial cooling systems throughout Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and 'Louisiana.

Upon his retirement, he began growing a variety of flowers in a backyard greenhouse; this, in time, turned into a small business and once again he was dealing with the public, something be dearly enjoyed.

He married Ara Louise Allen in Sep­ tember 1932, and they bad lived in the West area since 1947.

Survivors include his wife, Ara Louise Prasifka of West; a daughter, Louanne Rice of Burleson; three sons, James Prasifka of Houston, David Prasifka of Wimberly and Chris Prasif­ ka and daughter-in-law, Denise of Dal­ las; three sisters, Mary Schroeder and Julia Prasifka, bóth of Dallas and Betty Deiterman of West; a brother, Louis Prasifka of Dallas; six grandchildren, John Rice of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Brian Prasifka of Austin, Jarrel Prasifka of Wimberly and Michelle, Laura and Kathryn Prasifka, all of Dallas.

Brother Monthei served his country with the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

Pallbearers were Daryl Cunda, grandson; Rudy D. Chovanec, grandson-in-law; and Billy Beiersdor­ fer, Paul Barcak and Elroy Dieringer, all nephews and George Krupala, a friend.

Mrs. Cunda was born October 6, 1900 to Joe and Mary (Hranicky) Lich­ novsky in Fayette County. She at­ tended Velehrad School through 8th grade.

On October 9, 1934 she married Charlie Cunda in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha.

A housewife, she resided over 50 years in Fayette County. She was af­ filiated with St. John's Catholic Church; the Altar Society and the SPJST Lodge No. 19 in. Velehrad for 51 years.

Survivors include her husband, Char­ lie Cunda; one daughter, Marcella Kunz of Schulenburg; one son, Ber­ nard Cunda of Rosenberg; three grandchildren, Donna Chovanec, Melissa Cunda and Daryl Cunda; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Jonathan Chovanec.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.

Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple.

Mrs. Geistman was born to Emil Anton Bruggman and Millie Green Bruggman in Cyclone, where she lived all her life. She married B.J. Geistman on January 18, 1944.

Sister Geistman was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone and St. Mary's Altar Society. She was a housewife and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 24. Sister Geistman was a very active member of Lodge No. 24 for many, many years, and will be missed by all of us.

Survivors are her husband, E.J. Geistman of Cyclone; two sons, Reginald Geistman of Round Rock and Patrick Geistman of Austin; daughter, Patricia Schneider of Cyclone; three grandchildren, and three step-grand­ children.

Brother Honza died Monday night at the Baylor Medical Center in Ennis.

He was born July 5, 1926 in Ennis, the son of Frank and Anna Dvorak Honza. He was reared.in Ennis and at­ tended Laneview and Ennis High Schools.

On September 17, 1949 he was mar­ ried to Mary Kasper of Ennis. He served in the U.S. Army. At the time of his death, he was employed by Webworks, Inc. of Dallas.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, and SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

Distinguished USAFA Graduate Andrew Jay Leshikar was a distin­ guished graduate from the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado and was commis­ sioned a second lieutenant.

He received his bachelor of science de­ gree in civil engineering on May 29th.

Andrew is assigned to Will~ams Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona, for pilot training and 'will report there on · August 1st.

The class of 1991 was honored with President George Bush as commence­ ment speaker. Andrew received his diploma from President Bush as one of 69 distinguished graduates in the classs of 968 cadets. He was named the Outstanding Cadet in Civil En­ gineering and received the Falcon and Fledglings award.

Andrew is a 1987 graduate of Battle Mountain High School and is the son of Erwin and Nyle Leshikar of Battle Mountain, Nevada. Overton Receives Awards Former Westite, Judy Overton, is the recipient of a "Wrangler" award presented annually by the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Ok­ lahoma. The "Wrangler" is a bronze statuette given to members of the arts, broadcast and film industries who keep the legend of the cowboy alive today.

Overton and KPRC-TV reporter Phil Archer received their awards for a fea­ ture which chronicles the arduous life of a present-day rodeo cowboy.

Other honorees include "Dances With Wolves," "Riders in the Sky," Michael Martin Murphy, Larry Mc­ Murtry among others.

Overton is also the recipient of a School Bell award presented to mem­ bers of the media by the Texas Educa­ tion Association. The award was presented to her for a series of reports called "They Should Know That." The stories focus on high schoolers' reten­ tion of basic skills and also on what can be done to resolve the dilemma.

Overton is the former Judy Barton and is a 1973 graduate of West High School in McLennan County. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1976 majoring in Radio/TC Communications.

Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barton, Sr. of West. Judy and her hus­ band Tom and their sons, Nathan and Matthew, live in Houston.

The birthday party was held Friday, May 31, which included Louis Vacek entertaining with the accordian and piano and singing "Happy Birthday."

In the afternoon was Recognition of Volunteers. Rev. Fred Jensen was the . guest speaker. Administrator Harvey Marx said a few words to the volun­ teers and handed out certificates and recognized the volunteers for apprecia­ tíon for their services for the year.

Sandwiches, chips, vegetable dish, dips, egg salad, celery and cheese tray, fruit plate, cake, cookies, pies, punch and coffee were served. Thursday afternoon, May 16, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinett brought dogs for therapy. Friday, May 17 was open house all day with special guest, Mayor Kermit BJfzinger, at the noon meal and Police bfficer Mike Beard.

Milé sestry a bratři: Schůze našeho řádu se konala 19. května. Bylo přítomno 29 členů a 3 hosté. Prezident řádu Anthony Trilíček zahájil schůzi ve 2 hodiny, všichniúředníci byli přítomni. Po slibu věrnosti vlajce uctili jsme památku zesnulýchčlenů jednou minutou ticha.

Tajemnice řádu Jarolyn Poppová přečetla zprávy z minulé schůze a podala finanční zprávy a vše bylo při­ jato beze změny.

Sestra Lucille Dlugoshová podala zprávy od zábavního výboru.

Bratr Trilíček oznámil, že sestra Jarolyn Poppová je prezidentem 7. okrsku.

Sestra Poppová prečetla korespondenci, kterou jsme obdrželi v květnu a mezi jiným bylo poděkování od sestry Barborak za květiny, které náš řád poslal na pohřeb jejího muže bratra Juliuse E. Barboráka.

Výbor pro nové členy, který se skládal z těchto členů: Louis Jašek, Bill Mareš a Gertrude Pavliska, schvalil 4 žádosti: Ernesta Popp a Ofelia Poppové, Sandra J. Heatové a James Valise.

Okresní schůze českého dědictví v Crosby Každoroční sociální a společenský den odbočky z Harris okresu Společnostičeskéhodědictvístátu Tex­ asu se bude konat v neděli odpoledne 23. června v síni Americkýchlegionářů (American Legion Hall) v Crosby, Texas, FM 2100 přes ulici obchodu Wal-Mart.

Dveře se otevřou asi v dvanáct hodin v poledne. Svačina, anglicky zvaná "covered dish lunch," bude podávaná asi v jednu hodinu odpoledne. Každá rodina je žádaná, aby přinesla jednó masového jídló, a jednu misku jídla zeleninového, anebo zákusek.

Odbočka obstará chléb, kávu, čaj, pivo, sodovku, papírové talíře a nádobí. Jídlo bude vyloženo dohromady na velkém stolu pro každého návštěvníka.

Formální program nebude, ale bude možné celé odpoledne si pohovořit, besedovat, spřátelit a seznámit se jeden s druhým. Také bude příležitost prohlédnout české sbírky a rodinné historie a jiné české věci, které budou vyložené na ukázku. Každý, kdo má zájem o české věci a dějiny anebo má rád dobré české kamarádství, je srdečně pozván. Když přijdete, přineste své české věci, které by byly zajímavé na prohlídku pro návštěvnfky schůze.

NA MORAVt: V otázce vztahů mezi počátky etnografických skupin na Moravě - Ha­ náků, Valachů, moravských Slováků, Horáků aj. - a starými Moravany se vyhranilo několik názorů. Kontinuitu mezi nimi předpokládá Lubor Niederle: ,,Na Moravě. . . jsme vlastně odkázáni jen na to, abychom z dnešního rozloženi moravských kmenů učinlli si závěry pro dobu starou, neboť máme plné právo předpokládati, že dnešní různorodostí mají za sebou dlouhý, staletý vývoj. Proto pro X. století smíme na Mo­ ravě počítat! především s diferenciaci· dvou velkých kmenů: Hanáků n Slováků." Blízké stanovisko zaujímá jazykovědec Václav Frajšhans: ,,A hlavni kmenové rozdělení nynější Moravy .- na ,Hanáky, jádro Mo­ ravanů, Cechy na západě, Lachy na východě v sousedství s Poláky a Slováky na jihovýchodě - je jistě prastaré, ač ovšem původně Slo­ váci byli mnohem četnější a zasahovali dále na sever a západ nežli nyní." Flajšhans zároveň upozorňuje, že ,,jména vlastních kmenů mo­ ravských však na úsvitě dějin nejsou nám dochována ... " Podobně v novější době historik Lubomír -Havlík soudí: Vývoj etnografických skupin může sahat svými kořeny, počátky a jádry někdy mnohem déle do minulost! než jen do 17. a 18. století, kdy o nich existují historické zprávy a kdy se objevuje jejich dnešní označeni. Před 16. stoletím neznáme prameny, které by mohly dokumentovat exístenct etnografických skupin. "Teoreticky můžeme ovšem připustit myšlenku, kterou však nelze historicky prokázat, že v dnešních ven­ kovských obyvatelfch Hané, českomoravské vysočiny a moravského Slovácka ( nikoliv však Valašska} mtlžeme snad předpokládat onu ne­ dokumentovatelnou spojitost se staromoravskými kmeny, I když mu­ sfme uvážit střrdanr obyvatelstva. Nebylo by ovšem správné, kdyby­ chom promftali dnešní existenci lidových skupin do počátků morav­ ských dějin. Dopustili bychom se chyb, kdybychom v dnešních lido­ vých skupinách viděli prosté nokračovam ptlvodnfch kmenových jed­ notek." Stejně stanovisko zastává Ladislav Hosák, který navfc upozor­ ňuje, že před 16. stoletím se obyvatel Moravy, at už od Olomouce, Jihlé!vy, Ostravy nebo Uherského Ostrohu, zval prostě Moravec a spe­ ciálnf bližší označení místa se tlálo uvedenfm kraje; popřípadě pan­ ství,

Východiskem k odpovědi na uvedenou otázku může být proces etno­ geneze Moravanů v době Velkomoravské říše. Ten probíhal jinak, než tomu bylo v Čechách, kde máme bezpečné historické zprávy o starém kmenovém zřízení, známe jména těchto kmenů, jejich sídelnt územf i kmenďvá centra. V sjednocovacfm procesu sehráli rozhodujíc! úlohu čechové, jejichž sídla se rozkládala v centrálnf části země, a kteřf si podmanili ostatní kmeny a dali jim své jméno. Na Moravě nevíme nic bezpečného o kmenově ogranlzact. Kmeny zde zřejmě zanikly tak rychle, že je prameny nestihly zaznamenat. Už v 9. stolett zdejšt oby­ vatelstvo se nazývá Moravany. Rešem otázky etnogeneze Moravanů zůstává ve stádiu hypotéz jak z hlediska jejich příchodu, resp. přtcho­ du těch slovanských nebo neslovanských částí, které se skrývaJf v 9. století pod označenfm Moravanů, tak z aspektu etnického podloží, s nímž se dostali stařt Moravané do kontaktu.

Moravané byli v době Velkomoravské zřejmě sociálně dlferencováhi.

Vedle prostého lidu byla mezi nimi značně početná vrstva společnosti s díUežltým postavenfm. Z· písemných pramenil víme, že Metoděje přt návratu roku 873 přijal Svatopluk se všemi Moravany; kntže Rostislav před pozváním byzantských poslů svolal svá knfžala 1 Moravany na sněm, Podle této významné složky mojmfrovského státu začalo se všéchno obyvatelstvo nazývat etnonymem moravskl Sloviene a na ňzemt staré Moravy v povodí stejnojmenné řeky i termfnem Moravané, staroslověnsky Moravljěně, latinsky Meraví, Maravant, Maravenses, fransko-latinsky Merehari, Marahenses, Marenses, Marharii, Marahabi­ te, Sklavl Margenses, staroanglicky Maroaro. V této době se objevuje také spojení jména Moravané s apelativem terra - země Moravanů.

Prameny vzniklé na Moravě znajf Moravany jako celek odlišný od sou­ sedů - Cechů, Chorvatťi, Holaslců, Víslanů, Bulharů, Avarů, Korutanců, Bavorů, V této době lze už předpokládat, zejména u vyšších společen­ ských vrstev, moravské vědomí (moravanství). Historikové hovořt o moravské čl staromoravské národnosti. Název Moravan se udržuje po celou historickou dobu. Zvláště pevný je v době feudalismu, kdy se jím označují Moravané sami, a jsou tímto jménem označováni ve všech úředních dokumentech 1 svými sousedy.'

Z hlediska dalších historických osudů Moravanů a jejich případná etnografické členitostť je důležité období počátku 10. stoleU, kdy se Morava dostává do nové situace v důsledku. úpadku Velkomoravské řfše, zpí\sobené nesvornosti Svatoplukových synil, nájezdy Hunil a Ava­ rtl a zejména maclarským zpustošenfm. Roku 908 zaznamenává Regl.:,­ no PrUmský ve své kronice, že Morava je "nynf odlldněna až po zem" ( ,,nunc depopulata usque ad sollum" ). Někteřf historikové soudí, že tato zpráva je značně přehnána; život na Moravě probíhal dál,-zlomena však byla branná moc Velké Moravy. Pfsemnt pramen o obléháni anda­ luzského města Larlda staromaďarskou vojenskou jednotkou (k roku 942) vzpomfná, že severnfm sousedem starfch Maďaril je Morava. To nasvědčuje, že soudobé zprávy o zpustošeni celé Velké Moravy starými Maďary nejsou přesné, ..neboť se týkaJf hlavně vfchodnfch · oblastf centra Velké Moravy, tj. přibližně l1zemf dnešnfho J!Znfho Slovenska po dolnf tok řeky Moravy, v menši mfře severnfhoáiornatého -:-Sloven­ ského územf, a Ještě méně moravských krajO.
