The lodge has recently entered into a lease agreement with the Fayetteville Independent School District to use the ball park facility for high school games. The school has a very good baseball team which recently won their district championship and we invite everyone to come out to see them play and to share your enthusiasm and sup­ port at the SPJST ball field.

Buckholts Lodge No. 15 met Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.. with President Gladys Allison presiding.

The minutes were read and all com­ mittee reports given, which were all approved.

Due to other activities in the area, we had to reset our picnic date to October 12, 1991.

It was decided that the two entertain­ ment people will get paid $5.00 per hour lo clean our hall after the dances.

The members would like to welcome Leslie Sakewitz home after a six­ month stay in the hospital due to an accident.

The lodge would like to send its sympathy to the families of Vlasta Kamenicky and Anton Svetlik. Vlasta Kamenicky, a longtime member, held many offices and served on commit­ tees over the years. Anton Svetlik, also a longtime member, helped build our lodge building and was very active in our lodge through the years.

We would like to stress to all mem­ bers how important it is to attend our meetings. The next meeting will be June 9 at 3:00 p.m.

News From Lodge No. 32, Victoria Lodge No. 32 hosted the District VI spring meeting on April 28, 1991 at the Community Center Annex. The at­ tendance was great and the meeting went real well. We were entertained by the youth clubs from our district and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable afternoon.

Lodge No. 32 met on May 8 with President Mike Ahlstrom calling the meeting to order. A social hour was enjoyed after a short business meeting.

Memorial Day was a wonderful celebration in Victoria, remembering veterans of all wars, those who returned home safely and those who did not. We thank all of our service personnel and are so thankful to live in the land of the free. Our next celebra­ tion will be on July 4th - be sure to show your colors and loyalty to our great country.

Lodge No. 40, El Campo-Hillje The regular monthly meeting of our lodge was called to order after our so­ cial games with President Rita Vanek leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a moment of silence for our deceased members.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers; all were present, ex­ cept our Treasurer Madeline Shimek who was ill. We missed you, Madeline.

The minutes of April 15 meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence received and read was:

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on June 2, 1991 at the Sweet Home Com­ munity Center in Sweet Home begin­ ning at 12:00 noon. We will begin our social with a dinner of barbecue chick­ en. Members are asked to bring side s-dishes and/or dessert. Plates, utensils and drinks will be furnished.

After the meal, a short business meeting will be held. Someone with a birthday in April, May or June will win a birthday cake baked by Irene Zissa. Door prizes will be given.

Our 50-year pin recipients will be honored at this social. A member of

the Supreme Lodge will present the pins.

The rest of the afternoon will be spent eating, drinking and playing games. Bring your favorite game if you wish. Liquid refreshments will be furnished by the lodge.

Note the change in· meeting date from the third Sunday in the month to the first Sunday, June 2, and the time change to noon. You will not have to prepare your own dinner. Lodge No. 66, Waco Dear Members: Our regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Jim Locke at 2:30 p.m. Flags were presented by Jesika Tierce and Nicole Pruitt. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Nicole Pruitt and SPJST Youth Club Pledge by Jesika Tierce.

All officers were present.

There were ten visitors, namely, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, Mildred Hanak, Emily Bailie, Willa Mae Cervenka and Hen­ rietta Cervenka, Joseph and Alice Janecka, Sandy and Leona Taylor and Jane Galler. We enjoyed having them with us and we hope they will come, again.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved. She also read cor­ respondence from the rest homes director about the need of a piano for S.P.J.S.T.Rest Home No. I. Then she read the minutes of the board of trustees meeting and they were approved.

Sister Sophie Leshikar gave the Bntertainment Committee report for the June meeting. Members are asked to bring sandwiches; the lodge will furnish chips, desserts and drinks -­ fathers will be honored.

Sister Mary A. Langlotz gave the fraternal activities report and reported there were 20 members present at our May 13 social night. Our next social game night will be June 10 at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to come and enjoy your favorite game, also bring a snack.

Third place winners at SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament were Robert Seith and Weldon Galler; both from Lodge No. 66, Waco.

New members are Laurie Annette Yates, Christopher Robert Rue and Katherine Ann Rue. Transferees out are Shryl Wiest and Jim Wiest to Lodge No. 200.

We had one 50-year pin to present at our meeting. It was presented by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar to Sister Marie Janecka. Con­ gratulations.

Cheer and Condolence Committee report was given·by Jeanette Smith: · Get well cards were sent to Weldon Galler, Pete Nors, Bernice Pankonien and Susan Kofnovec, a sympathy card was sent to Millie Kolenovsky and a birthday card was sent to Leslie Dun­ gan, The committee also made a delivery of fruit baskets and a special visit to the following: Marie Brady, Annie Hanus, Minnie Narovec, Lillian Traywick, Hattie and Albert Kasper, Rose Parma, and James and Georgie Pavlicek. They enjoyed a very nice visit with each one.

Youth club report was by Youth Leader Gladys Yates. There were eleven members, one visitor and eight adults present at the youth meeting.

They will make boutonnieres for the fathers in Moody Nursing Center.

They had long stem carnations for the mothers and presented them to each mother at our May meeting. They elected their officers for the youth club. They were installed by Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar.

In our June meeting, the graduates will be honored. They made a $25.00 donation to Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

Sister Libbie Parma reported for the Libbie Parma Trust Fund of Lodge No. 66 that they will honor the senior graduate from our youth club. She also reported the following members who will be going to Florida with the Czech Folk Dancers of West: Janice and Mark Roessler, Darrin and Torrie

Lodge 66, Waco Honors 50-Year Member and Mother's Day at May Meeting

Lodge 66, Waco Lodge No. 66 had four (4) 50-year members this year and only one, Sister Marie Janecka, was able to attend our May meeting to receive her pin from SL President Howard Leshikar. It was so nice to see her, again. We were pleased that four members of her family were able to attend with her, also.

We also honored our mothers. Sister Darlene Engelke is Mother-of-theYear and Sister Evelyn Stuckly was runner-up; each was presented with a monetary gift, which both of them presented to the Libbie Parma Youth Club Trust Fund.

The youth club presented each mother of the lodge with a long stem red, white or pink carnation. Thank you, youth club, from all the mothers.

A delicious meal of fried chicken and all the trimmings was served after the meeting, along with your choice of beverage, and visiting among our members and honored guests.

The next meeting is scheduled· for Sunday, June 16; all the fathers will be honored. Lodge No. 87, Temple President Ladis Navratil called the regular meeting to order Friday eve­ ning, May 10 at 7:00 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lad Zatopek; members remained standing in silent tribute to deceased members.

Mary Zatopek gave ber report and the following new members were wel­ comed into our lodge: Brittany L. An­ gelo, Kenneth Stephen McCroskey and Jimmy Page McCulley.

Correspondence was read and old and new business was discussed.

President Navratil announced that the annual MHMR Camp Funshine will be held at Lodge No. 87 beginning June 3rd.

The next meeting will be held Friday evening, June 14th. A covered dish meal will be served. Members are to bring a covered dish of meat, vegetable, and/or a salad or dessert for family and guests. The meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. The youth club is invited to attend the covered dish sup­ per. The lodge will furnish bread and beverages. The business meeting will be held following the supper.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News The monthly meeting was opened by President Jerry Ermis at 7:30 p.m. on May 13, 1991.

Flag Bearers Michelle Linney, Dar­ lene and Marlene Migl presented the flags and led us in the Pledge of Al­ legiance.

The following members, who are deceased in April and May, are Janie Dvorak, Edwin Bravenec, Carl P. Kriegel, H.V. Copeland and Harry H. Finn. The members stood in silence in honor of these deceased members.

President Jerry Ennis called the roll of officers and all were present, except 1st Vice President Marceil Malak due to a serious illness in her family.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes of the previous meeting which were approved. She read the names of the applicants, who were accepted. She also read correspondence from the Janie Dvorak family, also read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning the scholarships.

President Jerry Ennis spoke about our Homecoming and Splash Day on Sunday, June 2 and also gave us the line-up of the day's program (a busy day, indeed). You don't have to be bored.

Wednesday, June 5, 1991-VĚSTNÍK/7 Homer Alexander. He has so many eye glasses, many people are in need of them. It's a wonderful gesture to be able to deliver these glasses to people who can't afford to buy glasses.

Homer announced that the Supreme Lodge gave 69 scholarships. Isn't that wonderful?

Oh May 20, 1991 we'll have a CPR course offered to us, so we learn to cope with unexpected· incidents. It is a charge of $10. Homer is hoping to have more in the future. I hope everyone appreciates Homer Alexander's efforts to help people in­ cludíngchíldren, et cetra.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney, a great girl, gave a short report, so did DYC Marie Stayton. They are both worn-out from that Walk-a-thon here

several weeks ago. NOW, can you believe that they walked 12 miles in 5 hours? Barbara had blisters on her feet, which were unreal, and she final­ ly pulled off her shoes -- she said she always did want to walk barefooted down Main Street, so she did. Marie said they finally had to hold each other up.

Josephine Pflughaupt, chairman of Lodge 88 scholarship, gave a report.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney thanked Ed and Ellen Miculka, Mike Trefell and Teena Ondracek for the cakes and. pies they donated on game night Thursday night.

We also will have a spaghetti dinner in the near future prepared by Teena Ondracek. Teena bakes some delicious pies every week, and if her spaghetti is half as good as the pies it will be "super." The date will be announced, so listen for it.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox reported that the April profit was very good.

June dances through our next meet­ ing: Saturday, June 1 -- Phil Grey, Big Band Music Sunday, June 2 -- Lodge Homecom­ ing, a good polka band, City Polka Boys, will play at the Gazebo, 1 to 3 p.m. and in the Ballroom, 5 to 9 p.m, FREE DANCE Friday, June 7 -- Texas Brew (C/W) Saturday, June 8 -- Battle Dance: Central Sounds and The Texas Dutchmen I Blue Room Manager Margaret Allbritton reported on the Blue Room party and dance. The profit was very good. On Sunday, July 28 is another party from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.; cock­ tails, dinner and dance with music fur­ nished by The Wilderness. For all this entertainment the charge is $12.50 a person. Tickets will go on sale in the Lodge 88 office on May 23 until June 18. The band plays very good mixed music - polkas and waltzes.

Chairman Willie Wehring from the Social Night Committee gave a very good report, and thanked Entertain­ ment Chairman Viola Cox for the com­ pliment she gave us at the previous meeting. All of us workers really ap. preciated that, too, because we are sel­ dom recognized. Thank you! He announced that on Homecoming and Splash Day we'11 play games from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

President Lowrina Lindemann gave a very good report for the Birthday Club and also talked about the ticket and pastry booth. I do hope our. Birthday ·--·-·--··--·-----~-

Men' s Club President Ed Miculka gave a good report for the Men' s Club; on their work day they pressure­ washed all of the front wall, which took 1 1/2 days. It looks beautiful.

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann gave his report for the month. The swimming pool will be open May 1819 and also May 25-26. Then starting Splash Day weekend, the pool will be· open every day. He stated they've hired 5 fully-qualified life guards.

Auditing Committee Chairman Tom Marsh reported that all the books were found in order and accepted. A per­ sonal comment -- Tom is very active in the Civic Club in our sub-division.

He's been on the daily patrol for several years. They do a superb job.

Dramatic Club Chairman Bill Malina called a meeting for May 20. It was well attended and all are interested in having a real good program scheduled for September29.

The Choral Group President Gene Barcak: announced that they would rehearse on May 29 with the Czech Concert Band. They will perform on Homecoming,June 2.

Our known sick members are as fol­ lows: Mrs. Bessie Matejek, who broke her hip - she' s at home now doing well; Arnold Cmajdalka is at home now after a 6-bypass open heart surgery. He's doing fine, and wishes to thank all the many friends for cards, phone calls, flowers and the many con­ cerns and prayers. He says he couldn't have made this without all his friends, and not to forget his children Betty Lynne and Charles, also his loving sister who stayed with him for 2 weeks.

Another member who works at Lodge 88 every Saturday morning is Wylie Guettner, and he has been ill, but is on the mend; also remember Harriet Allison, who is in the. rest home; Norman East and Abner Dixon who has been in Twelve Oaks Hospital for 7 weeks; also Mary Kosut, Benevolence chairman was ill at our last meeting. We hope all these good people will be back soon.

Mr. Bill Souchek announced he will have another Czech class, so if you're interested contact him.

District V Director Louis Hanus an­ nounced that he had distributed 7 scholarships in his district; to me this would be such an honor to see these happy faces.

Lodge 88 Scholarship Chairman Josephine Pflughaupt announced that three scholarships were given. They are Lisa Kelly, daughter of Charles and Betty Kelly and the grandparents are Steve and Estelle Kelly. Lisa will attend North Texas at Denton. Shan­ non Divin, grandson of Bennie and Stacie Kocich, will attend Texas A&M University. Damon Abreo will attend Rice University. The membership wishes the best for these fine students.

DYC Marie Stayton gave a brief report, also mentioned especially the DYAD at Lodge 88 on June 23, 1991.

Rest Home No. I in Taylor requesting a donation for a badly­ needed piano; a letter from Supreme Lodge requesting tax forms and a flyer from Supreme Lodge explaining SPJST benefits.

Treasurer's ·and financial secretary's reports were read and approved.

Beseda Director Martha Vrla thanked Assistant Director Rose Ann Parma for her assistance at the Shiner 1 OOth an­ niversary celebration of the Sts. Cyrill and Methodius Catholic Church and also the International Festival perfor­ mance. Both performances were well received. Our next performance will be at San Antonio's Fol.klife Festival the first weekend in August.

Coming events include Fraternal Council's Flag Day picnic on June 10 at the Czech Club and Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas on October 6.

Youth Achievement Day for District VII will be hosted by San Antonio lodge July 7, 1991. The members are enthused about hosting this activity.

Plans are being made for a successful day. Sister Frankie Campbell dis­ cussed some ideas she had with the members and asked for volunteers for that day. Brothers Don Netek, Emil Matula, Louis Jasek, Joe Spacek and Sister Annie Stryk volunteered to help with the planning of the meal to be served at noon.

Brother Emil Matula motioned that our lodge donate $50.00 toward the purchase of a new piano for the S.P.J.S.T., Rest Home in Taylor, Texas. Brother Don Netek seconded the motion which was approved by the members.

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met May 9, 1991 at SPJST Lodge No. 25. No, we did not meet at SPJST Lodge No. 84 in April. I must have been thinking about Lodge No. 84 when I wrote the letter.

At our May meeting there were 24 members and 7 guests present. Our guests were Vlasta Laznovsky, Bessie Laznovsky (Edwin), Randy Trojacek, Joe Houdek, Joe Vlk, Jerry Kohn and Frank Holley.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Al­ legiance was repeated.

Secretary Linda Trojacek read the minutes. They were approved as read.

Treasurer Mildred Trojacek gave the financial report. It was approved as given.

Sunshine Stacie Hejny sent thinking of you cards to Sisters Mary Patak and Helen Vrla. A thank you note was read from Sister Ella M. Zmolek for the get well card. and money gift. Emilie

Slovak thanked the Circle for her mother, Millie Vytopil, for the get well card and money gift.

Quilt was quilted for Sister Linda Trojacek. Linda thanked the quilters.

Some of the sisters completed a few more placemats. .

"Happy Birthday" was sung to May birthday celebrants.

Sister Stacie Hejny donated the lining (bottom) for the Polka Festival quilt. The Polka Festival quilt was won

by Anne Pegues of Kemp, Texas. Our arts and crafts booth did real well.

Thanks to everyone who.worked in the booth, especially the Junior Sokols for coming to our rescue. We had a shortage of workers. The Circle gave a donation to the Junior Sokols to help purchase needed equipment.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sister Emilie Harrison. Her sister-in­ law died recently.

Vlasta Laznovsky, Bessie Laznovsky and Patricia Fowler were welcomed as new members.

Thanks to Bessie Laznovsky for donating a quilt top, to Patricia Fowler for making our new membership books and Sister Mary Kopecek for donating a lap robe for our special fund. Sister Louise Vlacilek was the lucky winner.

She won the door prize, also. How lucky can one get! The door prize was one of the leftover gifts from our arts and crafts booth at the Polka Festival.

A money donation was given to Patricia Fowler for our appreciation for · making our membership books.

Sister Alene Skrivanek gave Patricia a lovely pin cushion she made for the Polka Festival that did not sell; that was so nice of Sister Alene.

Sister Vojteska Janicek was recently hospitalized in Ennis Baylor Hospital and is now recuperating in the home of Bertha and Julius Podhrasky, her daughter and son-in-law in Dallas.

Sister Doris Foiťs husband, Bill, was in charge of the memorial services held at the Crisp Cemetery in Crisp, Texas, May 5. Those of you who know Bill might be surprised to know that he is a good preacher. Bill did a mighty good job of preaching and sang a beautiful solo at the services. He does have some good talents.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) will hold the an­ nual meeting for all members on Satur­ day, June 8, 1991 at 10:30 a.m. at SPJST Lodge No. 88 located at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas.

This is the most important meeting of the year because the program and activities of the forthcoming'year will be discussed and of most importance will be the nomination and election of a new slate of officers for the 19911992year.

On the program will also be a review of the video tape filmed by Bohunir Strnadel for Czechoslovak Television in Ostrava, C.S.F.R. showing scenes throughout Texas communities in the fall of 1989. This film features inter­ views with farmers and ranchers, newspaper editors and owners and folk dancers, all of whom are striving to keep the Czech heritage alive.

Membership dues for the current year are now due, and all members who have not yet paid their dues, are requested to pay them at the June 8 meeting or send them to Dr. Don Pisar, 3001 Cordova Drive, Temple, Texas 76502.

All CESAT members are urged to attend this meeting and interested guests will be most welcome.

Czech Heritage Society News The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its annual social and fellowship day on Sunday, June 23, 1991 in the American Legion Hall located on FM 2100 (across the street from Wal-Mart) in Crosby, Texas.

The doors will open at 12:00 noon for registration. A covered dish lunch will be served starting at l :00 p.m.

Every family is requested to bring two covered dishes, one meat dish and one vegetable dish, salad or dessert. The chapter does not want to run out of food, so each family is asked to bring more than enough for themselves and their guests. The chapter will furnish the bread, paper plates, utensils, cof­ fee, tea, beer and some soft drinks.

The afternoon's entertainment will include music by Bill Peska and an ac­ cordion group. Some of the "Texas Czechs," a newly-formed singing group who will be going to Czechos­ lovakia in July to perform in Prague and Roznov, will sing a few songs.

Jerri Gruber will lead the sing-a-long.

George Janecka will have a Tarok table set up. Tables will be available · for those who would like to play cards, dominoes or other games.

The chapter will transact ohly such business as may be necessary.

Everyone who has an interest in Czech history, customs, tradition or Czech family genealogy or enjoys Texas style Czech relaxation is cor­ dially invited. Members and guests are encouraged to bring and display their family histories and other items which they feel will be of interest. There will be ample opportunity to visit the fami­ ly history displays and literature tables.

State CHS Meeting To Be held in Rowena The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its 1991 summer meeting on Saturday, June 8 at SPJST Lodge No. 49, Rowena Hall in Rowena,Texas.

The lodge building will open at 10:00 a.m. for registration. Those of you who are interested in culture, genealogy, history or tradition are in­ vited. Members and visitors are en­ couraged to bring their family histories or other Czech memorabilia for dis­ play during this hour.

There will also be a family history workshop held at 11 :00 a.m. This workshop will feature various sources of information available to the new family history researcher.

It has been suggested that ladies kindly bring some pastry, etc to aug­ ment the catered meal served at 12:00 noon at a nominal cost.

Front The Youth Leaders Another Successful May Fete In Taylor SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor held its annual May Fete on Sunday, May 5, 1991, with the crowning of the queen at 3:00 p.m. The grand march and dance was held from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. with music by the Jodie Jay Band.

The festivities began with a barbecue dinner at noon, and the first, and hoped to be annual, horseshoe tourna­ ment at 2:00 p.m.

Youth Dance Held at Academy Lodge The SPJST Lodge No. 177, Academy Youth Club held a dance for the youth in Academy and surrounding areas on May 24th. The youth club officers and members would like to acknowledge the help of some special people in helping the youth club hold this event.

These people are Lodge 177 President Otis Beck, Helen' Bland and Jim Mc­ Neill. Their good humor and willing­ ness to help really made the night run smoothly.

Brandy Hughes is the 1991 SPJST Queen. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Matoska.

Her grandparents are Charlie and Irene Bucanek. Her escort, Gordon Cabaniss, served as king. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Bill Cabaniss, all of Taylor.

Our Youth Leader Shirley Ashcraft reported on several upcoming events, including the SPJST candy sales; dance lessons for youth members; the "First Annual Youth Festival" on September 21-22 at Lodge No. 47, Seaton; and the Special Category at this year's State YAD: "Odyssey of the Mind."

As I close my twelve-year youth club career, I would like to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed the SPJST Youth Organization. I feel that my Czech heritage is alive and the pride is shining. I have learned so much in the SPJST. The youth club bas been wonderful. I would like to encourage all members ages 6 to 17 to get involved in the SPJST Youth Program.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 15, Buckholts wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother ANTON WILLIAM SVETLIK, age 79, who died at his residence May 8, 1991 following a lengthy illness.

Brother Svetlik was born in Milan County, Texas. He was a farmer, mem­ ber of the Buckholts Brethren Church; also was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 15 for 63 years, having joined at .age 16 years. He was very active in his lodge until 1986 when he became ill.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m.

Friday at Marek-Bums-Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron with Rev. John Baletka officiating. Burial was in the Hope Lutheran Memorial Park in Buckholts, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Charlsie Svetlik of Buckholts; a daughter, Kathryn Janicek and son-in-law, Kenneth Janicek of Cameron; two sisters, Rosie Matyastik and Frances Vogelsang, both of Cameron and grandson, Keith Janicek and wife, Nadine of Temple, Texas.

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. ~9, Taylor wish to express their heartfelt and sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our departed lodge brother JULIUS MIKSCH, I 80, of Taylor, who died Friday, February 1, 1991 in Johns Community Hospital.

Brother Miksch was born April 3, 1910 in Granger to Joe W. and Louise (Zapalac) Miksch. He was a lifetime resid~nt of the. area and me,nber of St. Mary s Catholic Church. He had been a farmer for 48 years.

Funeral services were held Sunday, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Lonnie Urban, celebrant. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery. .

Pallbearers were Terry Miksch, Frankie Miksch, Bobby Miksch, Ray Ponton, Harvey Benad and Edward Ryan.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Miksch of Taylor; a daughter, Laura Danek of Houston; a son, Norman D. 'Miksch of Pearland; a sister, Lena Freytag of Moulton; three brothers, Johnnie Miksch of Belton, Bennie Miksch of Thrall, Joe Miksch of Houston; fiv~ grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the officers and members of SPJST Lodge No. 24, Cyclone with deepest regret, express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of MATILDA SOUDEK, 95, of Temple, who died at a Temple hospital on Tuesday, May 14, 1991.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday at Seaton Brethren Church in Seaton with the Rev. Al Newby and the Rev. Gene Kotrla officiating. A meal was served in the fellowship building following services.

Mrs. Sodek was born in Burleson County, the daughter of Tom and Anna Hejl Luksa. She married Ray Sodek in January 1914. They fanned in Bell County for many years.

Mrs. Georg was born on November 24, 1905 in Columbus, Texas. Her parents were Joseph V. Frnka and Anna Noska Frnka.

She was married to Otto L. Georg November 24, 1926 in Columbus. He passed away on January 11, 1991.

Services were held April 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Henneke Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Robert Schlortt of­ ficiated. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery.

Mrs. Georg was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Oslava založení katedry českého jazyka při UT Mnozí čtenáři Hospodáře si vzpomínajína pravidelnézprávy o úsilí členů, krajanů a dalších příznivců České vzdělávací nadace státu Texas, která pořádala sbírku na ustavení katedry českého jazyka, literatury a kultury při některé texaské universitě.

Po mnohých letech od založení tohoto spolku a po delším přerušení činnosti v šedesátých a sedmdesátých letech a po reorganisaci po roce 1986 staří i noví členové spolku dosáhli prvního velkého úspěchu na cestě k rozšířeníznalostínaší kultury prostřed­ nictvímjazyka a literatury nejen v Tex­ asu ale i po celé Americe a Kanadě.

Založením katedry bylo dosaženo takového postavení českéhojazyka při Texaské universitěv Austinu, že každý zájemce může studovat český jazyk, literaturu a kulturu bez obavy, že nebude na programu studia. Částka určená pro katedru pak pomůže při obohacování tohoto programu z úroků, při čemž základní částka zůstane nedotčena.

Před samotnou oslavou se sešelsbor ředitelů nadace a projednal některé další organisační záležitosti. Finanční tajemník nadace podal zprávu o stavu pokladny a sdělil veřejnosti, že potřebujeme ještě asi tak sto tisíc dolarů, aby nadace dosáhla původně stanovené částky milionu dolarů na katedru, což je polovina od university ~ polovina od nadace. Nadace nemusí čekat na příhodnou dobu k zaplacení této částky a rovněž není nutno přestat se sbírkou v případě, kdy částka bude dosažena. Nadace může přispět na výdaje finančně slabších studentů, případně věnovat částku na nějaké zvláštní akce nebo udělit stipendium zájemcům ze staré vlasti. Všechnytyto myšlenky potřebují peníze a proto je nutno i nadale pokračovat ve sbírce.

Jakmile se program studií českého jazyka rozběhne v plné síle, pak bude nutno se připravit na rozšíření znalosti češtiny mezi našimi krajany a najít způsob, jak vědomost jazyka obnovit nebo posílit a zlepšit a k tomu bude nutno použít všech možných sdělovacíchprostředků.

Není pochyb o tom, že kromě učitelek . češtiny na universitě, je potřeba využít znalostí jiných schopných krajanů a učitelů bez formálního vzdělánía titulů, kteří jsou velmi nápomocni v dnešní době a udržovali po léta vyučování češtiny v okolí Houstonu a na ostatních místech.

Doufejme, že se nyní jejich činnost prohloubí a zlepší za pomoci novězaložené katedry z Texaské university.

Samotná oslava proběhla ve velmi příjemném prostředí atria v knihovně L.B. Johnsona za početné účasti mnohých významých osobností kra­ janského života v Texasu. Oslavu poc­ tila svojí účastí i paní Rita Klímová, velvyslankyně československé

Je nepřivede do republiky. Vysvětlilaposluchačům, že bez soukromého podnikání není možná hospodářská reforma a soukromé podnikání je založeno na určitém riskantním rozhodování, ke kterému je zase nutné patřičné prostředí jistoty zákonu a parlamentní demokracie. Největší problémy má veřejný zdravotnický systém, čistota prostředí a kvalita života vůbec.

Snahou dnešní vlády je . návrat ke svobodnému podnikání, parlamentní demokracii a do Evropy. Dalšími problémy k řešení je směnitelnost koruny a náprava majetkových, občanských a jiných křivd bývalého režimu, proniknutí na světový trh a záměna trhu se Sovětským svazem a bývalými tak zvanými socialistickými zeměmiza obchod na světovémtrhu.

Není pochyb o tom, že mnozí naši krajané ve světěmohou být nápomocni nové vládě, avšak tato vláda, t.j. federální vláda, musí působit dojmem jistoty a zaručit udržování zákonů a dnes je jen jedna ze tří vlád, které dnes mají řídit republiku, musí převzít in-

Zašumělo to vzduchem a nedaleko Polňáčka se sneslna zem lesklýbrouk, černě hnědý. Polňáček se zvědavě pozvedl, pokročil blíže a přičichl k němu.

Avšak stalo se něco nepředvídaného.

Brouk roztáhl klešťovitá kusadla, a když se k němu nosík Polňáčkův přiblížil, stsiskljej tak ostře a bolestně, že Polňáěek zavřeštěl a skokem utíkal odtud, unášeje s sebou roháče, který se pevně držel jeho nosu.

Teprve po několika skocích se roháž pustil, ale Polňáček se nezastavil.

Utíkal okrajem lesa a netroufal si ani se ohlédnouti. Až teprve po delší chvíli stanul u potoka a ponořil do jeho chladivýchvlnek bolavý nos. Ohlíželse stále, zda nepřiletí onen brouk ještě sem za ním. Když pak hopkoval do

svéhopelechu, pečlivěse vyhnul místu, kde se setkal s roháčem.

v Jednou časně z rána běžel se Polňák napásti na zelné pole. Chodil tam rád hrýzati šťavnaté lupení, které příjemně chladilo a hezky chrupalo pod jeho zuby.

Když povyhlédlze své pěšinky kryté obilím, spatřil s hrůzou na zelném poli nějakou postavu. Nikdy tam dříve nebyla. Chvíli seděl nehnutě a pozoroval ji. Zdálo se mu, že číhá.

Chvílemitrochu pohnula rukou a zase nic. Bylo ticho.

Polňáček se bál. Věděl, že lidem nelze věřiti. Proto se rozhodl, že počká. Ale slunko vyšloa postava stála ještě nehnutě. Již se chtěl :vrátiti,když tu najednou přeletěl nad jeho hlavou

Hle, strnad se ho nebojí -- napadlo Polňáčka -- a je menší. Ale než domyslil, vzlétl strnad a usedl na napřaženou ruku postavy. Nad tím se Polňákovi rozum zastavil. Udiveně se pozvedl z trávy, zvedl uši a hleděl na postavu; byl zvědav, co se stane. Čekal najisto, že postava strnada chytí, čekal, že se stane něco hrozného, a byl připraven, že vyskočí a bude utíkati s tohoto strašného místa.

Ale nestalo se nic. Ticho bylo jako předtím a strnad, načechrav si peříčko, spustil se zase dolů na zelniště. Potom se i Pelňák pozvedl docela, zapanáčkoval a díval se. A hle!

Nedaleko postavy seděl pěkně přikrčen starý zajíc. Znal ho již od jara. Polňák byl nyní již zkušenější a proto pozoroval, že ostatní zajíci dělali všechno tak, jak tento starý zajíc. Byl­ li on nepokojný, věděli, že není bezpečno, pustil-li se do jetele, věděli, že nic nehrozí. Dal-li se na útěk, neohlíželi se a utíkali také.

Proto se Polňák přestal báti a vhopkoval do zelniště. Ale přece šel jen opatrně, nespouštěje postavu s očí.

Když pojednou zavál vítr a postava se zakymácela, ztrnul strachem, přikrčen jsa pod zeleným lupenem. Ale starý zajíc chrupal klidně dále. Dodal si tedy i Polňák odvahy a přihopkoval až k samé postavě. Vanul z ní slabý zápach lidský, ale když Polňák přistoupil až k ní, spatřil, že je to jen několik zbytků šatstva navěšeného na tyči.

Byl to strašák. Už se ho nebáll.

VI Polňák vylezl z křoviny a stanul na pasece. Přes paseku šla řada hladkých sloupů, jež vycházela z vysokého lesa a mizela někde v polích. Slyšel tam neustále nějaký podivný zvuk. Byly to dráty na telegrafních tyčích, do nichž vanul ranní větřík. Poněvadž zvuk byl stále stejný, přestal se ho Polňák báti.

Přeskočil malý příkop a vyběhl na svah, který se zvedal za ním. Seděl na trati a radoval se z cesty mezi kole­ jnicemi, která se táhla do dálky.

Pojednou uslyšel jakési hučení pod zemí. Usedl, zapanáčkoval a naslouchal. Hučení bylo stále silnější.

Zdálo se mu, že vychází z kolejnic.

Hopkoval dále a usedl opět. Ale tu jej naráz obrátilo prudké písknutí. A sot­ va se ohlédl, spatřil za sebou něco ohromného, černého, jak to vyjelo z lesa a hnalo se přímo na něho. Polňák nečekal, nýbrž se dal rychle na útěk.

Ubíhal dlouhými skoky po trati a snažil se obludě uniknouti.

Ale hřmění se blížilo s úžasnou rychlostí. Ubíhal tedy rychleji a rychle­ ji. Najednou se nad ním zatmělo a miliony hromů hřměly mu nad hlavou.

S hrůzou se přitiskl k zemi. Nad ním letěla ona strašná obluda. Zdálo se mu, že to nemá konce.

A najednou jako když utne. Hřmění minulo a rychle se vzdalovalo. Nad Polňákem bylo zase jasné nebe a sluneční záře. Ohromen a ohlušen zvolna se zvedl na trati a udiveně hleděl za vzdalujícím se vlakem. Srst měl ještě zježenu a v očích hrůzu. Nemohl pochopiti, že to přežil.

Teprve po chvíli se vzpamatoval, skokem zmizel s trati a zalezl pod smrčky. Tam se přikrčil a uvažoval, co to bylo.

VII Jeenou dopoledne dřímal Polňák pod bramborovou natí. Pojednou byl probuzen nějakým podivným zápachem. Uvědomil si, že je to zápach psí. Otevřel oči, ale nic neviděl. Slyšel jen nějaké pískání a volání v daleku.

Opatrně se nadzvedl a spatřil řadu osob. Šli přes pole a psi pobíhali kolem nich. Zticha se zase přikrčil do brázdy.

Hluk se blížil. Vtom třeskla rána.

Polňák se vmáčkl, jak mohl nejvíce, do země. Přes něho přeletělo hejno koroptví zoufale křičících a za ním opožděně ještě jedna, jež s temným úderem dopadla na kraj strniště, ale hned zaběhla do brambořiště. To Polňáka znepokojilo.

Slyšel, jak nějaké zvíře utíká k němu, a zahlédl psa, jenž s nosem při zemi hledal zraněnou koroptev. Tu se pes náhle zarazil a hleděl na něho.

Hrůza obcházela Polňáka z těch očí a z tohoto upřeného pohledu. Najednou se Polňák hbitě otočil a prchal brambořištěm. Kryl se, jak mohl nejvíce. Jen jeho hnědý hřbet a vzpřímené uši kmitly se někdy nad bramborovou natí.

Neuběhl však daleko. Třeskla rána.

Něco švihlo hvízdavě kolem něho a na zadní noze pocítil náhle úder a palčivou bolest. Vyskočil tedy hbitěji, zakličkoval a tu zahřměla druhá rána, jejíž broky zasvištěly za jeho patami. to již sklouzl Polňák za mez a s hrůzou ubíhal podél ní, aby se dostal z blískosti lidí.

Teprve zdaleka se ohlédl. Když viděl, že se lidé stále blíží, vklouzl do paseky. Nezůstal však při kraji. Jen se kmital metlicí a přeskakoval smrčky, až se dostal do úplného ticha. Tam zalezl pod hustý podrost.

Pravá noha ho pálila, ale byl tak postrašen, že si jí ani nevšímal. Ležel jen přikrčen a zkoumal okolí ušima i nosem. Nic podezřelého nebylo ve vzduchu, přes to se však Polňák ae oc1.d~;J ani pohnouti. l eprve za tmy se zvedl, když měl hlad. A tu teprve také pocítil, že ho noha velice bolí. Rána pálila a noha byla těžká. Ani pastva mu toho večera nechutnala. Zalezl tedy brzo do paseky a lízal si zraněnou nohu. To mírnilo bolest.

Trvalo několik dní, než se mu rána zahojila. Potom zase vycházíval až do polí a pásl se v jetelišti.

Z Polňáka se stal zatím dospělý zajíc. Ze všech dosavadních příhod poznal, že má mnoho nepřátel. A tak se stal velmi opatrným jako starý zajíc, s nímž se vídal na pasece a v polích.

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
