••• Another scholastic year has just be­ come history and our SPJST Society certainly has, once again, played its important part in helping our graduates and other students with scholarships.

Approximately one-half of the recipients' pictures are in this issue and more will be in next week's edition. · We hope our scholarship recipients appreciate what our Fraternal Order endeavors to do for their future.

Remember our SPJST in your future our Society is only as strong as we and you make it!

Food For Thought LiVe ótte day at a time. You can plan for tomorrow and hope for the fu­ ture, but don't live in it. Live this day well, and tomorrow's strength 'Will come tomorrow.

Speaking of prospects for life in­ surance, one can't help but feel that the prospects can be divided into several classes: People you know of who are about your age, and personal friends who have the need for life insurance. Also people you do business with, the doc­ tor, the laywer, groceryman plus many others. · People they know: Some salesperson may find it much easier to get through the door by telling his prospect that his friend asked me to stop by and explain my proposition to him.

People who have received an ad­ vance letter from our society: This method works best in rural com­ munities where the farmer or rancher has more time to think it over and develop a desire to know what you have to offer. Once you show them the need they have for what you offer, they are really sold.

People with whom you have made a telephone appointment: This method works better on members. It is hard for them to say "no" when you ask if everything is O.K. for you to call after dinner. When you arrive discuss things you know are of interest to him for a short time. Then show him his needs for more life insurance. If you cannot show him he needs more life insurance don't call on him. It is usually easy to write a contract if you can convince him of his needs.

Life insurance must live in order to be sold. It's as flat and lifeless as a dead battery on a cold morning unless presented enthusiastically. There must be punch and drama in every step of the sale. To stimulate desire and secure favorable, immediate action, the salesman himself must enthusiasti­ cally demonstrate every phase of sell­ ing including the close. Dramatizing is as essential to top selling as a stage is to a theatre. There must be poise iu the approach, confidence in the presenta­ tion and boldness in asking for the contract.

A serious thought. Don't make mis­ takes with your will. Usually, a majority· of individuals don't like to think about what will happen after they die, however, ignoring the pos­ sibility is asking for trouble for your heirs.

Putting off making a will. Most people know they should have a will, but never seem to get around to making one. Resultingly, they have no say in who receives their property or administers their estate.

Not recognizing the limitations of a will. You cannot dictate to whom all of your assets go. Joint property goes to the co-owner, property heJd in trust to the trustee, and insurance, etc. to the beneficiary.

Not keeping your wilJ up-to-date.

Many factors may alter your financial condition or wishes. You should review your will at least every three years or whenever there is a major change in your family status.

Keeping your will at home. If your will can't be found after your death, the state may presume you destroyed it intentionally, rendering it null and void. Leave the original with your lawyer.

Changes that are not binding.

Making changes to your will by codicil increases the chances it will be misread. It is better to have the will redone.

These are only a few of the many reasons you should have an up-to-date will. See your lawyer for more infor­ . mation; he or she will be happy to help you plan your estate.

Lodge No. 13, Dime Box Dear Members and Friends: Sixteen SPJST Lodge 13 members met on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. for the regular monthly meeting. The meeting opened by reciting the pledge to the flag led by Matt Ford.

Secretary Sister Racket read the minutes from the April meeting. They were accepted as read by a carried mo­ tion.

Sister Kostelka gave the treasurer's report. She also asked that all members Michael Poe being presented a please pay their lodge dues of $1.20 scholarship certificate for a $500 per member per year. It was decided to send a contribution -SPJSTto the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I Piano Fund in Taylor.

We were contacted by the Red Cross and asked if we would be willing to open our lodge building for shelter in case of an emergency such as hur­ ricanes, floods, etc. It was decided to do so.

The Go-Texas Committee will spon­ sor a benefit dance at our hall on Saturday, June 22nd.

The SPJST picnic, together with St. Joseph's bazaar will be held on July 21st. SPJST will be in charge of all events, except the auction. It will be sponsored by St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The youth club will be in charge of the bake sale and dunking pond. Barbecued chicken along with red. sausage and hamburgers will be available.

Since the June meeting date falls on Father's Day, it was decided to have the June and July meetings combined on July 7 at 1 p.m., followed by a cleanup activity of the picnic grounds.

DYC Patsy Koslovsky talked about upcoming youth functions and reminded us about YAD, which will be at Flag Hall on July 14 with registra­ tion starting at 11 :00 a.m .. There will also be food available for a 12:00 noon snack and a meal will be served in the evening.

Congratulations are in order for youth members, Melanie Zavodny, Christi Marek and Kristie Waits for receiving the SPJST Scholarships. We are happy for you girls!

It was announced that we will have ice cream and baked goods at our next meeting, so let's make some good ice cream or cakes.

Lodge No. 25, Ennis The May 9, 1991 meeting opened with the Polka Festival behind us. We want to thank all of those who worked - and worked - and worked. We also want to thank all of our loyal followers who came to the hall - because everyone knows the SPJST serves the best food in town during the festival.

Our kitchen help was extremely busy on Saturday. The bar help and door people did great jobs as well. President Ernest Haskovec says - "THANK YOU ALLI" Anyone who is interested in shaping next year's Polka Festival is en­ couraged to attend their committee's monthly meetings on the first Wednes­ day of every month at 7:30 p.m. The location of the meeting changes, so call the Chamber of Commerce for details. Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: Here it is about twenty-three days to Summer Solstice (longest daylight hours of the year) and the an­ nouncement of another meeting. Lodge Karel Jonáš will convene its June meeting at 106 Leveridge (downstairs)

on Sunday, June 2 at 2 p.m. Although the agenda will be open, time wiJl be left to allow an open discussion of up and coming events.

The meeting will have a Father's Day theme and will honor fathers with special door prizes.

Upon the adjournment of the busi­ ness meeting, the fraternal hour will convene. Again the light buffet lunch­ eon is scheduled to start the hour, with an open period for those persons who wish to partake in some sort of games, providing the appropriate games are not forgotten at home.

On May 5, the monthly meeting con­ vened with a quorum present. For being a rather short meeting, all reports were accepted as given and business needing attention was taken care of.

The fraternal hour started with a trivia game brought by Sister Helen Kelner. It made one's brain work a lit­ tle and was interesting to take part in.

A prize was given to persons with the most correct answers. With everyone bringing something for the luncheon, the buffet table was full and all present enjoyed the food and fellowship. A domino game got started after the cleanup. A big thank you goes to all who brought food for the luncheon.

A reminder to all 50-year pin recipients: Next month's July meeting is your meeting and the officers of the lodge urge all, who are able, to attend.

Lodge No. 35, Elk May5, 1991Meeting Our meeting was brought to order by President Henry Breitkreutz and the pledge was led by Charlene Stead.

Visitors were Stormy Jones, Crystal Sorenson and Adolph Pavelka.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Cindy Easter and they were approved.

Treasurer's report was read by Verna Pavelka.

Sister Louise Burney, youth leader, reported that Monday, July 22 we would go to Six Flags; July 15-18 (Monday through Friday) are camping days at Camp Val Verde. She also would like to get a bus for a trip to Six Flags. She told about the party we had on April 21 that we made Mother's Day gifts. She then told about what new members could participate in such as cake walks, camp, etc. They held a cake walk May 4 to help buy camp T­ shirts, and would have more of them to help buy all the youth members a shirt.

She said she needed to meet with all youth parents to get camp forms filled out.

We elected our queen nominee Bran­ dy McFarland and Charlene Stead as her duchess for YAD to be held June 23 at Cottonwood.

New officers were elected for the coming year in the youth club. They are: President--Brandy McFarland, Secretary--Charlene Stead, Treasurer-­ Jana Breitkreutz, Reporter--RD Easter and Sergeant-at-Arms--Brandon Adler.

Necklaces made by the youth club were passed out to all mothers for Mother's Day. September 22, at the Bell County Expo Center, we will have a craft's booth and sell necklaces, earrings, boot decorations and keychains to raise money for the youth club.

Certificates were presented to Stefanie and Waylon Callaway and RD Easter for their entries in the camp T­ shirt contest.

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home Lodge No, 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on June 2, 1991 at the Sweet Home Com­ munity Center in Sweet Home begin­ ning at 12:00 noon. We will begin our social with a dinner of barbecue chick­ en. Members are asked to bring side dishes and/or dessert. Plates, utensils and drinks will be furnished.

After the meal, a short business meeting will be held. Someone with a birthday in April, May or June will win a birthday cake baked by Irene Zissa, Door prizes will be given.

Our 50-year pin recipients will be honored at this social. A member of the Supreme Lodge will present the pins.

The rest of the afternoon will be spent eating, drinking and playing games. Bring your favorite game if you wish. Liquid refreshments will be furnished by the lodge.

Lodge No. 81, Needville The monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81 was held on Sunday, May 19, 1991 at the lodge hall in Needville. At 12:00 noon, a group of thirty adults and children enjoyed a meal of baked ham, assorted vegetables and home-baked pastries. Some of the vegetables were fresh from members' spring gardens.

Our thanks go to Winnie Susan for baking the ham and to all who brought food.

President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order at 1 :00 p.m, The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was led by Cheryl Newman. We wel­ comed one guest, our District V Direc­ tor Louis Hanus. His visits are always enjoyed by the members. Not only is he our liason with the Head Office, hut he always brings a bit of good humor to the meeting.

All officers were present, except Brother Gilbert Wa1zel, special fund chairman; substituting for him was Sister Elsie Brdecka.

A letter from the Supreme Lodge was read by President Macha describ­ ing the success of the current statewide scholarship drive. Recipients are now being named and one of them is Michael Poe of Lodge No. 81. Con­ gratulations.

We extend a warm welcome to Kylie Elizabeth Donnan, a new member of Lodge No. 81..

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the April meeting and the financial secretary's minutes. Both were approved as read. She also read a letter to members from the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I in Taylor. A decision on the request contained in the letter was tabled until the June meeting.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall presented the financial report which was also approved.

The special fund chairman's finan­ cial report and calendar of events was summarized by Sister Elsie Brdecka.

Thomas Kuykendall and Johnny Blinka are on our sick list. We wish you progress in your recovery.

In his remarks to members, Brother Hanus expressed pleasure with the high percentage of new policy sales that District V has contributed to the statewide total of new sales. He also mentioned the problems lodges face today in financing the construction of new structures such as lodge halls.

On Thursday, May 16 Director Hanus attended the ceremonies at Needville High School for presenta­ tion of various scholarships to college­ bound seniors. He presented a scholar­ ship from SPJST Supreme Lodge to our member, Michael Poe. Recipients of the two $250 scholar­ ships from Lodge No. 81 are Arny Klinkovsky and Jennifer Foyt. On hand to present these two scholarships were Lodge 81 President Adolph Macha and Committee Members Delores Macha and Benita Walzel.

Congratulations to these three seniors and may you succeed in reaching your future goals.

Door prize winners for the day were Adolph Macha, Willie Miller, Jerry Kubala and Viola Jezek.

Our next meeting will be held on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, 1991.

The end of school is here and our young members have been busy with spring activities both scholastic and extra curricular. Listed on fifth 6 weeks' honor rolls were Aron and Brandon Blinka, Kristy and Clinton Jablonski, Corey Walzel, Jason and Bradley Vallet; also Cheryl, Amanda and Lynnette Newman and Lisa Pekar.

Jason and Bradley Vallet had entries in the livestock section of the Need­ ville Youth Fair held in late April.

Cheryl aml Lynnette Newman also entered projects in the Youth Fair.

Clinton Jablonski was recently in­ ducted into the National Junior Honor Society at George Junior High School in Rosenberg. Proud parents and grandparents of this seventh grader are Donald Jablonskis and Alvin Blinkas.

Clinton also had a successful season in Little League baseball, making two homeruns in one game.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Members: All officers were present at our monthly Monday meeting. The pledge to our flag preceded the usual order of business.

A thank you card was received from Milton Spaniel for the use of our ball for the reception, honoring Czechos­ lovak Ambassador Rita Klimova, who was visiting here. Many compliments have been received concerning this event which so many attended.

REPORTS: Vice President Cheri Petr gave her usual detailed report on all events. Brother Emíl Petr reported a busy month ahead. President Olson thanked all for help with the garage sate, which was a great success, even though the weather was not at its best.

The rain also cancelled our field trip planned by the youth reported by Youth Leader Bessie Petr. She also stated the youth were practicing for YAD and reminded everyone a bake sale by the teens at Rudolph's Meat Market on July 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On July 10, a teen prepared dinner will be served from about 6:30 p.m. to 'l? and July 20, the 35th annual teen dance, with the Mynarcik Band fur­ nishing music.

Sister Evelyn Salac received a hand­ clapping for the Special Committee report. You know it had to be "Spe­ cial."

The Czech Culture Society met April 29 and the next meeting is June 24 at Sokol on Greenville Avenue.

Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Society picnic and meeting will be June 10 at 7:00 p.m. If you plan to come, please bring pastry which our lodge is responsible for. It's the Catholic Czech Club on Military Parkway for the location.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News "We are Proud of Lisa!"

Lisa Marie Kelly, the daughter of Charles and Betly Kelly, and the granddaughter of Steve and Estelle Kelly of Houston, and Ray and Bertha Lathrop of Cleveland, Texas, has graduated from Cy-Fair Senior High School 1991. Her accomplishments are Honor Roll, lettered 4 years in Choir and won first place in Interior Design Projects. She belonged to clubs which are Choir Brigade Drill Team for 3 years; member of S.A.D.D. and secretary of the Senior Women's Club.

Lisa was chosen as fina.list with a Division I rating during her junior and senior years at Texas A&M Drill Team Camp, she was the first Brigade Girl ever chosen "Brigade Girl" of the week during her junior and senior years. She was chosen to dance on the "All Star Team" in Paris, France and in California at a Bowl Game. Lisa Marie was also voted the first "All Around Joe" for the 1991 Cy-Fair Brigade, an award given by Mr. Bob Flanders of Mobele Comm.

Lisa will be attending the University of North Texas in Denton in the fall and she will be majoring in Interior Design. Congratulations!

Helen and King are so happy that Vincent Hegwood and his fiance, Kim Holub, graduated from Texas A&M University on May 10th and 11th.

Helen said she and King got to attend the graduation exercise of both these young people.

King and Helen are very happy for their son because he's getting married on June 8, 1991. Vincent is a former youth club member. They do grow up and become wonderful adult members.

Homer and Rita Alexander took a short trip to Fort Smith and Van Buren, Arkansas. Both cities restored jhe old sections of their towns that date back over 100 years to before the Civil War Days. The Veterans Cemetery in Fort Smith is very much like the National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Beautiful! The 100year-old Van Buren train station, also renovated and is the base of a restored l 00-year-old train. On this train, we took a three-hour trip into the Ozark Mountains--really a fun trip. The pink and white dogwoods were gorgeous in the valleys, so in spite of the rainy weather, it was a most enjoyable trip.

Mother's Day was a beautiful day for all of us, however, for some our mothers are only beautiful memories.

My children, Arlene and Alfred Mar­ shall, have had a traditional dinner on Mother's Day for many years. All our family is welcome to come, however, due to some, circumstances they can't all be there every time. They served

A shower of rain came up unexpectedly and about 6 fishennen got wet, so Adene rounded up some dry shirts and put the wet clothes in the dryer. Everything was mended very quickly.

It was a nice occasion and hope next year more can come.

I was greatly touched by the death of Harry (Bubba) Finn, so were many of his friends. When we first moved to Houston, Bubba and Lillian were our first close friends and that was never forgotten.

Harry passed away in his sleep early Monday rooming, May 6, 1991 in his home in San Leon, Texas. He was a native born Houstonian on January 5, 1908. He was a retired district fire chief of the Houston Fire Department, which had a great part in his funeral service after 44 years of devoted ser­ vice. He was a member of Woodland Masonic Lodge No. 157, SPJST Lodge No. 88, Sons of Hermann Magnolia Lodge No. 7, Houston Firefighter Local 341, San Leon VFD and Volun­ teer American Legion Posl No. 291 in San Leon. His survivors are bis wife, Lillian Finn; daughter, Evelyn Faye and husband, Bennie Mikulín; 3 grandchildren, Wm. Mikulin and wife, Suzanne, Benetta Mikulín Saez and Barry W. Mikulin; also 3 great­ grandchildren. The funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 at Forest Park Lawndale Chapel with Rev. Don Wells officiating. Interment was in South Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were close friends, and Fire Department members of San Leon VFD and American Legion Post No. 291, San Leon.

President Otis Beck called the May meeting of SPJST Academy Lodge No. 177 to order at 7:30 p.m. The pledge was recited and roll call of officers held.

Then the meeting was turned over to Mike Boehm, Thorndale, Texas coach.

Coach Boehm was asking our lodge for a donation to defray the cost of two Academy students to attend the Bas­ ketball Mainland China playoffs; those students being Mike Cayne and Brian White.

Under new business, the members donated $200 to. these students.

Supreme Lodge Attorney Sidney Kacir then spoke to us on "Living Wills" and other subjects. The mem­ bers enjoyed his .talk and received a lot of good advise.

The minutes were read by Kathy Fritz and they were approved as read.

Libbie Bartek sent a sympathy card to Dorothy and Sue Ann Hammons, also get well cards to Margie Whitehead and Dorothy Massey.

Correspondence was from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar commending our lodge on our dona­ tions; a thank you from Father Walter Matous of St. Luke' s Church for the · use of our game equipment.

Trustees' Report -- Bobby Fritz was appointed to the Game Committee.

Our new member is Ronald West.

Members donated $100 to Temple Jaycees.

Lodge members gave a round of ap­ plause to Donald Tomastik graduating senior for being selected for a $500 scholarship from the Supreme Lodge.

Becky McNeil, Louis Driska and Ed­ ward Childress were appointed to the July Auditing Committee.

President Beck stated that the books were open to any member who wished to check on the "goings' on" at our lodge.

The Las Vegas trip came back up but was never voted on. 1t seems as if too many members are busy on too many weekends.

Don't forget the June 12th meeting, hopefully, the dance floor will be far enough along so we can walk on it.

Your reporter missed the meeting of the Ladies' Circle Lodge No. 92 on May 14, 1991, but for a very special reason. My new granddaughter, Sara Catherine Mocio, was born May 9th at Harris Hospital. She's a "premie" so she will be in the hospital for a whiJe. Anyway, Secretary Clara Marchioni was kind enough to give me her notes for the meeting.

After President Clara Cohen opened the meeting, members sang "My Country Tis Of Thee," a wonderful old song we remember from our childhood. Mary Pavey and Jonathan Cranfill were welcomed guests.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved and so was the treasurer's report.

Sunshine Chairman Lillie McMillan sent get well cards to Frank Kovar, MilJie Wruble and Mac McMillan.

A new handbook with members' names, addresses and telephone num­ bers was given out. It was compiled by Martha Durham at no cost to our Circle.

Hostesses for June are Rose Nies­ widomy, Betty Billington, Mary F. Windham. and Agnes Merlick. Some­ thing new has been added by having men as hosts in the kitchen in Septem­ ber; that's equal opportunity at its best!

Our president gave a Crown of Thoms plant to the oldest and youngest member present and to the member with the most grandchildren.

Also plants were presented lo members doing special duties for family mem­ bers. A miniature rose was given to all members present.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Corina Cranfill, Esta Bell Hubenak, Aurora Maldino, Lydia Palachek and Rosie Zalesak. Door prize was won by Corina Cranfill.

Mary Perricone had a wonderful trip to Memphis, Tennessee, saw "Catherine the Great of Russia," had a boat ride on the Mississippi River, then in Jackson, Tennessee visited the 26th SPJST Convention "Old Country Store" and in Oak Ridge, the Combing Mountains. She said the June 14-17,1992 scenery on the highway was beautiful.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club Meeting Our Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Youth Club held their meeting on May 12, 1991 at 2:00 p.m. at Mr. Gatti's.

West Dancers May Step Out At Disneyworld The well-traveled dance group from West is raising money to perform June 5 at Disneyworld.

Q. How did you earn an invitation

to Disneyworld?

A. I read an article about the Magic Music Days Festival in a Disney magazine and it talked about bands from all over the United States that had come there. We sent a videotape and a few months later we were ac­ cepted.

We're taking 19 dancers. It's costing us about $500 apiece to go.

Q. Where else have you danced?

A. Each year we perform in Corpus Christi, at San Antonio' s Folk Life Festival, at Rosenberg's Czech Fest, Fredericksburg's Oktoberfest and in Dallas, Ennis and many events in

Waco. And, of course, there's Westfest.

Q. Have you performed outside the country?

A. In 1988 we performed in Detva, Czechoslovakia, in a little festival there. We were the only American group there. Others were from Yugos­ lavia and Australia.

Q. Are you all Czech descendants?

A. Not necessarily. Most of us are Czech descendants, but we've had people of all backgrounds. All that matters is they enjoy dancing and working at it.

Q. What's special about your danc­ ing?

A. A lot of peop1e come to see us at first because they're interested in the Czech heritage and they want to see how it's being kept alive. We started out 15 years ago doing the old Czech dances, which are long and slow. As the years went by we started putting our variety into our act.

Now our music's gotten faster and we appeal to more age groups. Polkas and waltzes appeal to a lot of people.

Q. When you went to Czechos­ lovakia in 1988, what were some of your impressions?

A. The Czechs are quiet and keep to themselves, although we met a few who wanted to hear about the United States. Mainly those were the younger ones. The older people were in their own little world.

Q. Were there any hints in 1988 that there might be some dramatic political changes in that region?

A. When we were there you really couldn't tell. It didn't seem like any­ thing major was going on at that time.

We were in a very poor area and at that time you couldn't tell. The people · seemed content.

Q. The Czech community around West seems to be as closely iden­ tified with its heritage as any in the region. Why do you think that is?

A. I think that's because the people who settled West were very oriented toward their Czech heritage. They had the old customs and the old ways.

They decided to c.reatea new Czechos­ lovakia right there.

Through the years they've handed it down to their children, and they to their children, in hopes that it would all stay there -- the baking, the lan­ guage. Even if people moved off, when they came back that Czech heritage would still be there.

Q. Do you plan to do the same?

A. I can't wait for my children to be in a dance group and to learn the lan­ guage. I'm very heritage-oriented.

Q. Do you hear people speaking Czech when you walk through town?

A. All the time. ln the grocery store, wherever -- you name it.

Q. What's good about living in West?

A. I would never dream of moving.

Some people my age graduate from

high school and can't wait to get out.

But I like to be able to walk down the street by myself, to walk from one end of town to the nex,.: I like being able to go to the bank without showing an I.O. card. The people know who you are. I like the atmosphere.

And I think we've got a really good school system. That's where I want my kids to go to school.

Q. Westfest (Labor Day weekend) is one of the more popular events in Central Texas. What's the attrac­ tion?

. A. Different people come for dif­ ferent reasons. You have people who come to let loose and have fun. Maybe they're people who don't get to polka very often. Some people come because of the arts and crafts. Some people come for the food. Some come strictly for the cultural tent to see the different dances. It's not just Czech. There's Mexican, Polish, Ukrainian and more.

Q. How long have you been danc­

ing?

A. Fifteen years, which means I was 11 when I started. I was there at the

beginning. Now we have several young people .andmore than one group of dancers.

Q. In all that time, was there a mo­ ment that stood out for you in terms of touching people?

A.Well, every year we dance in Rosenberg, and there was a lady who came up to me and said, "I was here when you got engaged."

She meant that she remembered a ceremony we had when my husband and I got engaged. Single women wear flowers in their hair, and married women wear a bonnet. When a dancer gets engaged, there's a ceremony in which the woman has her flowers removed.

When we did it, my father and I danced. He requested that the band play "Edelweiss."

Well, the woman told. me she came every year and she' s gotten to know me watching those dances. She said she was coming just to see me. She had followed my whole life as a dan­ cer. I never imagined I could touch someone in that way.

By Orville Hancock Fort Worth Star-Telegram (May 9, 1991 Edition) Henrietta Milan of Lake Worth had been an artist for 22 years before she knew that she had developed into an impressionist painter.

She knew she liked soft, rich colors more than detail. She liked for her paintings to show action, and that was easier to do by taking a palette knife and spreading the paint to give her artwork texture and depth.

"I never paint with a brush," Milan said. "I can put more paint on a canvas and do it faster with my knife," she said. "I like the depth palette knife gives, and it helps me put action into my paintings."

Then in 1986, the art galleries dis­ covered Milan. They began exhibiting her work and she became known throughout the United States and Europe as an American impressionist.

A Milan painting now sells for up to $10,000.

"Henrietta Milan possesses a rare talent for painting, said Kathleen New­ man, president of Newman Galleries, which handles her work in galleries in Boston, New Orleans and Scottsdale, Arizona. "Although most painters ex­ periment with the palette knife at some point in their development, only a few ever develop the skiJl required to master this demanding technique."

Newman said that Milan, 53, is one who has mastered the technique.

"Milan deftly utilizes her palette knife to capture movement on her can­ vases, which are rich with texture and alive with light and color." Newman said. "We consider her to be one of America's most capable contemporary American impressionist painters."

Yet, Milan was pretty much of a well-kept secret in her own home

town. But as galleries in other parts of Texas, as well as in Florida, Arizona and New Mexico and Louisiana started selling her works, some of them were purchased by Fort Worth residents who didn't know she was one of them.

He is survived by his wife, Alma A. (Kiel) Schiller of San Antonio; a brother, Milton J. Schiller of Cameron, Texas; a sister, Clara Vitek of Waco, Texas; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held April 8 at Sunset Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gary Scholtz officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Park.

Brother Schiller was ill for 1 1/2 years with a heart condition. His wife of 60 years took care of bim at home.

Brother Phillips bad been a resident of Houston since 1966. He had former­ ly been a resident of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

He was a veteran of World War II, attended Oklahoma University, was a 32nd Degree Mason and retired in 1989 as senior executive vice presi­ dent of Highlands Insurance Company after over 20 years of service. He was a member of Lodge 154 since 1950.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Becan) Phillips; son, Billy Jay Phillips; daughter, Mary Lynn Phillips, an of Houston; mother, Beulah Gooch and a brother, O'Neal Phillips of Oklahoma.

Funeral service was conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 1991 in Waltrip Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Charlie Moore and Dale Jones of­ ficiated.

Pallbearers were Billy Jay Phillips, Andrew F. Crist, Charles H. Moore, John W. Jones, Joe E. Smith and Glenn Trayler.

Interment was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

Letní celostátní schůze Společnosti českého dědictví státu Texasu se bude konat v sobotu 8. června 1991 v síní řádu SPJST číslo 49, v Rowena, blízko města San Angelo, Texas.

Zapisování členů a hostů začne v deset hodin ráno. Bude možné si prohlédnout české sbírky a rodinné historie a jiné věci, které budou vyloženy na ukážku. Každý je vítán přinést si své české věci, které by byly zajímavé na prohlídku pro návštěvníky schůze. Také bude příležitost si pohovořit, besedovat, spřátelit se a seznámit se jeden s druhým.

V jedenáct hodin ráno bude dílna (anglicky zvaná 'workshop', anebo krátký seminář o pramenech potřebných an shledávání a a založení sve rodinné historie.

O, iěd se bude podávat ve dvanáct hodin v poledne za dobrou cenu.

Uřední podíl schůze začne přesně v jednu hodinu odpoledne.

Informační podíl začne asi ve dvě hodiny odpoledne. Námět programu bude, "České osídlení Texasu -- kdo, co, kdy, kde, jak a proč."

To netrvalo dlouho. Pták zmizel a s ním i bratříček. V polích nastalo smutné ticho.

Máma potom pobíhala chvíli rozčileně s místa na místo, jako by něco hledala, ale pak se vrátila a pobídla Polňáčka k útěku. Utíkali přikrčeni k mezi, až doběhli na kraj paseky. Tam se Zaječka usadila a zamyšleně hleděla do polí, odkud právě přiběhli. Polňáček se přitiskl ustrašen k mámě, ani nedutaje. I na hlad zapomněl.

Ale máma Zaječka nevydrželaklidně seděti a znova se rozběhla do polí. Po dlouhé chvíli se vrátila, ale sama. Pak se ještě ohlédla smutně k oné nešťastné mezia zamyšleněodběhla do houštiny.

Jen tiše broukla a zajíček se bral za ní známou již chodbičkou, kterou se brzy dostali do pelíšku. Trápil jej hlad.

Přitulil se k Zaječce a začal píti mléko.

Nassál se ho a unaven usnul.

Jak se vlastně dostal Polňáček do těchto končin, nemohl se nikdy upamatovati. Přemýšleje mnohdy o tom, škrabal se zadní nožkou za uchem, ale nevzpomenul si.

Jen to mu utkvělo pod huňatým čelem, že se ještě s jedním bratříčkem krčíval pod nízkým smrčkem v příjemném dolíku, obrostlém se všech stran žlutou metlicí.

Bylo odtamtud viděti na celou paseku a hřávalo tam první jarní sluníčko.

Máma Zaječka vodívalaoba zajíčky, Polňáčka i jeho bratříčka, na pastvu.

Jednou stáli na mezi. Náhle sebou máma Zaječka trhla a velice se polekala.

Vzduchem se cosi kmitlo, nějaký velký pták a hned potom se ozvalo bolestné zavřeštění bratříčka, který se zatoulal kousek dále. Zaječka ihned vyskočilaa hnala se na ono místo. Ale již zašuměla křídla a nad Polňáčkem se II. kmitl stín velikého ptáka. Byl to Máma Zaječka dobře pamatovala na jestřáb a unášel bratříčka, který se příhodu s jestřábem a proto vyváděla Polňáčka do polí jen časně z rána nebo pozdě večer. Jednou se však zpozdili a tu je spatřil velikýpes. Pustil se za nimi a honil je polem. Třebaže neměl dobrý čich, přece jim byl neustále v patách, neboť Polňáček se opožďoval a máma Zaječka se nejednou musila pro něho vrátiti.

Teprve když přišli na silnici, podařilo se jim psa trochu splésti.

Polňáčkovi se přes silnici nechtělo, neboť z jejího prachu cítil stopy lidí, -eřed nimiž jej matka často varovala. často mu dávala k lidským stopám přičichnouti, aby věděl, že se tomuto zápachu musí vždy vyhnouti. Proto nechtěl Polňáček přes silnici. Ale máma Zaječka se přes ni jen kmitla, proto pln úzkosti a strachu vyhoupl se také nahoru a skulil se na druhé straně (), Ul do příkopu. Pojednou se ozval výstřel a po něm táhlé bolestné psí zavytí. Zaječka i Polňáček vhoupli nyní do vyrostlého žita. Polňáček se přikrčil, sotva dechu popadaje; byl uděšen tou štvanicí i ranou. Máma Zaječka však už nespěchala. Naopak, zastavila se, pozvedla hlavu i uši a uviděla psa, který je honil, jak leží na cestě. U něho stál člověk s ručnicí.

Byl to hajný, který toulavého psa zastřelil. Tak zachránil život malému ještě Polňáčkovi.

III Jednou se pásl Polňáček s mámou nedaleko trní na jeteli.

A tu se stalo pojednou něco, čemu neporozuměl, ale co naráz změnilocelý jeho život.

Z trní, jež _rostlo mezi kamením na mezi, vyrazilo najednou malé žlutavé zvíře. Nebylo je v jetelině ani viděti, jak skákalo a hnalo se k mámě Zaječce, která nic netušila. Jako blesk se mihlo vzduchem a již seděloZaječce na krku. Zaječka vyskočila, bolestně zavřeštěla, až Polňáček ulekaně poskočil, a počala prováděti podivné skoky. Ječela, mávala předními prackami za hlavu, aby zvířátko setřásla, ale marně. Sedělo pevně jako přibito a nenechalo se střásti. A když jí na krku vyrazil pramének krve, dala se do běhu a ubíhala dlouhými a podivnými skoky. Než se Polňáček vzpamatoval, zmizela.

Nechápal, co se stalo, ohlédl se kolem -- a byl sám. Rozběhl se po mámině stopě, ale stopa se mu brzy ztrácela. Vrátil se tedy a pobíhal bezradně po pasece se schliplýma ušima. Často se zastavoval a znovu se dával do běhu. Čekal, že se máma vrátí, ale marně.

Po mezích začali choditi lidé na pole a proto zalezldo kraje paseky a skryl se pod stromky.

Později zase vybíhal, pátral a hledal.

I k onomu trní se podíval, odkud to neznámé zvíře vyběhlo. Ale tam to nepříjemně zapáchalo. Podobný zápach dotud nikdy necítil.

A když přišlo poledne, znovu běžel po mámině stopě. Šel daleko, bráz­ dami i pastvinami, přes lidské pěšinkyi obilím, až konečně Zaječku našeL Poskočil radostně a tulil se k ní.

Ale máma se nepohnula. Ležela natažena, s otevřenýma a vyděšenýma očima, na krku se jí rděl pramének krve a její kožich páchl nyní právě tak nepříjemně jako ono místo v křoví, odkud to žluté zvíře sko9ilo na mámu.

Dlouho ji obcházel, čichal k ní~ tulil se k ní, ale ona nic. Tu se ozvaloza ním krákání a Polňáček spatřil vránu, kroužící ve vzduchu. Hbitě se schoval do obilí. Vzpomínal si, jak přišel jed­ nou o bratříčka, a bál se všeho, co létá ve vzduchu.

Prodral se urousán a unaven obilím až k lesu a s bídou si našel dolík, v němž usnul. Tehdy si ještě neuvědomoval, že to byla lasice.jež jej připravila o mámu Zaječku. ~~

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
