Minutes Of The Second Regular Quarterly Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held April 10 - 11, 1991 At The Home Office In Temple, Texas

CALENDAR BIDS • Bids for the 1992 calendar were considered. On motion

by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, the low bid from Westem Media was accepted for $0.77 per calendar. Motion carried unan­ imously.

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present:

FRATERNAL SERVICE REPORT· It was reported that only thirty lodges have responded and the importance · of responding to this report was em­ phasized.

MINUTES· The minutes of the January 7-: 9, 1991 Supreme Lodge meeting were considered page by page. The minutes were approved as presented on mo­ tion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Vavra and carried unanimously.

OFFICERS' REPORTS • The Supreme Lodge Officers' Reports were ac­ knowledged on unanimously adopted motion by Director Vanek, seconded by Director Broz. (Reports will be placed of record in Exhibits Volume 10.)

RECOGNITION OF Ji~MPLOYLEES • Dorothy Stuchly and Doris Tyroch were called in and recognized for 25 years of service as SPJST employees. A token of appreciation and corsage was presented to each employee. Dorothy Stuchly is employed in the Financial Secretary's department and Doris Tyroch in the Vice President's department.

OLD BUSINESS PRESIDENT LESHIKAR'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: LODGE REORGANIZATIONS· Report was made on efforts involving the following lodges: Lodge No. 67, Schulenburg; Lodge No. 89, Rosebud; Lodge No. 184, Moulton; and Lodge No. 100, Sebesta.

CHARTER LODGE RESTORATION· It was reported that sixteen of our 25 charter lodges are active. The sum of $6,813.82 was expended under the restor­ tion project authorized by the last convention: 1992 CONVENTION· Report was made on convention arrangements made in Victoria.

President Leshikar moved, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska seconded, that plans for the convention be made on the same basis as the last convention. The adver­ tisting brochure and Monday night activities would be optional at the discretion of the District VI local lodges to add to the convention activities at their ex­ pense, if the local lodges desire to sponsor a brochure and/or a Monday night function. Motion carried. Status report and prices will be reported to the Supreme Lodge for selection of vendors, menus, etc. for final approval.

The remainder of the President's report was deferred to allow time for a meet­ ing with Actuary John Agee.

ACTUARY JOHN AGEE • Mr. Agee commented on the financial statement for 1990, the insurance industry as a whole, and SPJST products. He discussed changes and stated that the SPJST bas had excellent investment experience. On the product situation, he commented that we have everything we need in our portfolio of products and need to work on developing ways to sell them to potential members. He discussed ways to use our Universal Life to fashion an educational plan and also discussed a rider that could be attached to an existing certificate to provide living benefits, if we felt there is a need for this type of benefit.

DISTRICT CONTESTS • It was agreed on motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Director Hanus that another handiwork item may be substituted for the quilt contest or in addition to it.

DEER CONTEST • It was reported that there were six entries in the Fall of 1990.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITES. Report was made on the Horseshoe Tournament, Tarok Tournament, FAC training workshops, 50-year pin presentations and age 96 presentations.

GENERAL REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR LODGES • After discus­ sion, it was agreed by common consent, to send a general notification to all lodges about the reporting requirements to IRS for salaries and compensation.

This notification was to be handled by President Lesbikar and Legal Advisor Kacir.

LAS VEGAS TRIP • Report was made that 27 members took advantage of the trip.

NEW LODGES IN PROCESS • There was a review about the procedure prescribed in the By-Laws dealing with the forming of new lodges. It was agreed that effort would be made to either proceed with the organization of the proposed lodges or break up the groups if there does not appear to be any potential for successful organization of new lodges. The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by President Leshikar, and it carried. A six-month period will be allowed.

100 PERCENT SPJST FAMIUES • Report was made on the program. The program was assigned to the Supreme Lodge President and Vice President.

It was decided that by the July Supreme Lodge meeting, the President and Vice President will present a complete plan and guidelines for the 100 percent SPJST families' campaign. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded

by Director Vavra, and it carried unanimously.

DUNN AND BRADSTREET REPORT • The Board was informed that no reason could be found for some incorrect information picked up by the report­ ing agency and the agency could not trace the source.

NFCA PRESIDENT'S SECTION • President Leshikar reported information from the section meeting he attended in California.

SCHOLARSHIP • Because of a large donation that was made, it was decided to add one scholarship to the freshman and one to the undergraduate. Motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala and carried.

VICE PRESIDENT GEBALA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS: STANDARD COMPARATIVE year-end was reviewed.

REPORT • The Standard's -report for 1990

COMMISSION FOR FIELD FORCE • The 1/2 percent district commission for the past quarter was approved on motion by Financial Secretary Mikulas, seconded by President Leshikar. Motion carried.

Director Vanek received word that a relative had passed away and he was ex­ cused from the remainder of the meeting.

On the matter of financial reporting, he discussed quarterly reporting and com­ mented favorably on holding down expenses.

ANNUITIES LESS THAN $500 • It was agreed that to be a social member qualifying by annuity, the annuity must be brought up to $300 to be grandfathered as a social member. Hereafter, new members must have at least $500 in an annuity to use it to qualify for active membership. Those having less than $300 would be given the opportunity to withdraw without penalty. The motion was by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Kohutek, and it carried with ten in favor and Director Hanus voting in opposition.

He said the things we were doing right were good investments and some growth in real premium income.

ADVERTISING ITEMS. As was previously decided, sma11 advertising items were purchased for distribution at district meetings and special events.

It was suggested that to determine what level of expenditures are acceptable, projections should be prepared to assume a recommended level of expenditures.

Discussion followed.

STATE FIELD MANAGER'S/FIELD REPRESENTATIVES' REPORTS· The reports from the field staff were available for review.

SCHOLARSHIPS. Report was heard that the final total for the "100 Pennies Drive" was $7,824.08. President Leshikar made a motion, seconded by Vice President Gebala, that the fund drive be an annual drive and that the period be from October 1 through December 25. The motion was amended to approve the drive for 1991 only. The motion carried unanimously.

FRATERNAL INSURANCE COUNSELORS (FIC) SECTION • Report was made that Kathy Fritz attended an FIC officers' meeting in San Antonio. She is vice president of the group which operates under the Texas Fraternal Congress.

NEW PRODUCTS.· There was a discussion about new insurance products.

SECRETARY -TREASURER MIKESKA'S OLD BUSINESS MATTERS:

It was suggested that a study be conducted and guidelines be prepared for set­ ting up a perpetual scholarship endowment utilizing lodge and membership in­ volvement. The drive might seek out large donations whereby scholarships could be awarded and designated in the name of the donor.

REAL ESTATE OWNED/SOLD REO No. 163, .former Lodge building in Gregg County situated between Longview and Kilgore. Report was made that the property with a book value of $319,051.17 was .soíd for, $162,500 .cashless closing .costs. It was reported that.

REO No. 176, property consisting of 5 acres and a residence located in Bur­ leson County, Texas is the only foreclosed property owned by the Society. The property is listed for $17,900 and is listed with Shaw Realty in Caldwell, Texas. The Supreme Lodge officers and Director Vavra have full authority to negotiate and decide on sale of the property. ·

LOSS RESERVE ON REAL ESTATE OWNED/REAL ESTATE LOANS • Report was made that the loss reserve set aside for three delinquent loans is $56,000 and loss reserve for REO No. 176 is $24,000.

FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR· The selection process was reviewed. On motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Director Vavra, it was decided to leave the selection process unchanged. Motion carried.

LOCAL LODGE IRS FORMS 990/990-T • It was reported that two lodges not furnished us copies of their 1989 IRS Form 990. The standard notification letter for the 1990 IRS Forms 990/990-T were mailed to lodges.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' OLD BUSINESS MATTERS:

SALES • A billing envelope is being designed that will provide for members to send in names of prospective members. Consideration was given to a sugges­ tion by Vice President Gebala that sales representatives be provided with a meal at sales' seminars and it was so agreed on motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska. Motion carried unanimously.

VESTNIK • Report was made that the increase in postage cost for mailing the Vestnik was 20 percent.

IRA DISCLOSURES closure statement.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT • The audit being conducted by Jaynes, Reitmeyer, Boyd and Therrell, P.C. began on January 2, 1991 and will be concluded by May 31, 1991.

APPLICANT TESTING • Consideration was given to the limits for blood test­ ing of new applicants. Decision was made to postpone action until the July meeting to allow time to obtain more information on this subject and to re­ search the possibility of increasing our retention and our medical limits.

DIRECT BILIJ • Report was made that over 90 percent of our certificates are on direct bill representing 79 percent of our lodges. There is no conversion waiting list and lodges can be converted to direct bill very quickly.

DIRECTOR HANUS • He commented on proper display of the United States flag. If the flag is on the floor with the audience, it should be to the right of the audience. If the flag is on an upper level riser with the speaker, it is on the speaker's right side and the audience's left.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR • She commented on the recent workshop. She asked for status of the second conversational Czech tape and was told it had not been completed. She Inquired-about use of the video, "Czechs In A Texas Checker­ board," and was advised it is used frequently.

REAL/EST ATE LOANS/DELINQUENCIES • Recommendations for action on loans delinquent three or more months were considered and approved on motion by Director Hanus, seconded by Director Hrncir and carried unani­ mously.

LODGE LOANS· Consideration was given to a request from Lodge No. 187, Round Rock to refinance their second lien. Director Kohutek reviewed informa­ tion he had obtained while coordinating the request from the lodge. After con­ sideratíon and discussion of a recommendation from the Supreme Lodge officers, Director Kohutek moved and President Leshikar seconded that authorization be granted to proceed with the refinancing as recommended.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska's report was deferred to hear a presentation from Tom Gerik, Associate Professor of TAMU. TOM GERIK • He reported on au exchange program with Czechoslovakia and cooperative arrangements with several Czech universities for exchange and re­ search. The university system and federal agencies provide funding for the ex­ change program and other solicitations are also sought. He stated that broad-based community support is needed financially and through verbal sup­ port to carry out the cultural aspects of the program. He asked for a letter verifying our support for the program.

After discussion, it was agreed that the SPJST endorse the exchange program and write letters as necessary pledging the Society's cooperation and cultural support for the program. The motion was by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Vice President Gebala, and it carried unanimously.

The agenda returned to Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska' s report.

He read a letter from SPJST Lodge No. t 72 requesting that the Supreme Lodge give consideration to reducing the · interest on the lodge building loan.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska referred to a report on the interest rates and dis­ count credits available on all SPJST lodge loans. After due deliberation, a mo­ tion was adopted to adjust the amount of the credit under the 50-new-member rule to provide that no lodge will have an effective rate of more than 7 1/4 per­ cent afterapplying the credit. The motion was by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Director Hanus and it carried unanimously.

FIRST QUARTER INVESTMENTS· A list of real estate Joans closed and investments purchased and sold was reviewed and the actions were ratified on unanimously adopted motion by Director Vavra, seconded by Director Hmcir.

INVESTMENT POLICY • The Investment Policy of the Society was reviewed and it was agreed to amend the section, "Other Accounts," to authorize up to $1 million in money market interest bearing accounts.

On phone inquiries requesting cash value or loan information, it was agreed to amend an earlier guideline lo allow us to provide information to the insured member by telephone if they can verify two of the following: Certificate number, current or previous mailing addess, date of birth, or Social Security number if shown on our records. The motion was by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, seconded by Vice President Gebala, and it car­ ried unanimously.

FAX MACHINE • After discussion, purchase and installation of a FAX machine was authorized on motion by Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska and seconded by Vice President Gebala -. Motion carried unanimously.

Nick Morris visited a portion of the morning session and was given the oppor­ tunity to speak and he spoke briefly.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE PROGRAM • Inez Russell, the Executive Director of the Friends of Life Program, was present to discuss the program. The program is organized to address the needs of people who need help and help is not avail­ able from their family or any other source. Volunteers visit the sick and shut­ ins on a regular basis and help to meet their needs. The program is funded by volunteer contributions.

MR. AND MISS SPJST CONTEST· The proposed rules for the 1992 contest were reviewed, amended, and approved on motion by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Kohutek. Motion carried.

GROUP BENEFITS • There was a discussion about the status of Group Health Care arrangements. It was reported that our health care provider will allow coverage to be provided in the group for future retirees, if so requested by the Society. After discussion, it was decided on motion by Director Hrncir, seconded by Director Vavra, to make arrangements effective June 1, 1991 to allow future retirees the option to remain in the SPJST health care group. To be eligible to remain in the SPJST Group Plan, the qualified retiree must also be eligible to begin drawing retirement benefits under the SPJST Retirement Plan.

Carried unanimously.

Since it is customary and many firms contribute toward the cost of Group Health Care Benefits, consideration was given to this matter. After discussion, it was decided to authorize payment of the retiree's portion of the group Health Care premiums on future qualified retiree's subject to a limitation that the amount paid for a retiree's health care premiums will not exceed the standard premium for an active employee under age 65, and the retiree must pay the ex­ cess, if any. The entire cost of retiree's dependents, if any, must.be paid by the retiree. Qualified retiree was defined as an SPJST Home Office employee or Supreme Lodge officer, eligible to begin drawing an immediate retirement benefit under the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas Employees Defined Benefit Pension Plan. The motion was by Vice President Gebala, seconded by Director Hanus, and it carried unanimously.

DIRECTORS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS:.

It was agreed on motion by Director Hmcir, seconded by Director Hanus to proceed to get more information on possible involvement with the program.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY MIKULAS' NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: ANNUAL STATEMENT • There was a brief review of items of interest from the annual statement filed with the State Board of Insurance.

F:DP EQUIPMENT • A 5-year maintenance contract for a single payment of $38,561.35 was approved on a mail poll vote of 11 in favor and 1 opposed.

After discussion, it was decided on motion by President Leshikar, seconded by Vice President Gebala to ratify the 5-year contract. Motion carried.

1992 CONVENTION • A listing of lodges was' reviewed showing how we would apply the insurance goal for determining the number of delegates to the XXVI Convention, according to Article 4(a) of our By-Laws.

LISTING OF EXPENSES • A detailed listing of expenses was reviewed for the March 15-17 Youth Leaders' Retreat and the Lodge Officers' Workshop.

The retreat expenses were $5,258.75. The workshop expenses were $6,715.22.

DIRECTOR VAVRA • He asked about the status of updating the SPJST His­ tory and reported on plans and activities in his district. He thanked the Board and employees for the card and signed banner that was prepared for his son, Alvin, who was due to return from Operation Desert Storm.

DIRECTOR KOHUTEK • He recommended that we begin awarding 75-year SPJST membership pins in 1992. On motion by President Leshikar, seconded

by Legal Advisor Kacir, it was decided to work up plans for 75-year pins for consideration in the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

DIRECTOR BROZ • He discussed plans in the district and stated the meeting was productive and he appreciated everyone's cooperation.

DIRECTOR HANUS. He stated he was pleased with the results shown in the last financial statement.

DIRECTOR HRNCIR • A discussion during her report led to suggestions that youth rules need to be reviewed and procedural steps need to be followed to determine if they are complete. She invited everyone to Yoakum, Texas, as this was the first time the Yoakumlodge has hosted a district meeting.

Legal Advisor Kacir was complimented on his coordination of the workshop.

REPORT OF NEW ISSUES • There was discussion about the new issues' premiums of $131,990.74 for the first quarter, less rollovers of $24,285, and $13,464 for a net of new premium income of $93,241.74.

TERMINATIONS

DIRECTOR POKI..ADNIK. He discussed the need for good communications.

He reported that he had not received notification of the last NFCA Fraternal Section meeting and because of his long association with the NFCA and the section regretted he missed the meeting. He concluded by stating we could ac­ complish much if we all work together.

OTHER NEW BUSINESS MATTERS: SYD CLAUDETTE REESE'S REPORT - SYD Claudette Reese was ca11ed in to present her report. She presented a summary of activities, meetings and func­ tions.

She discussed the proposed Little Miss/Mr. SPJST District Contest, the proposed youth brochure and the youth festival. · Report was made on camps selected for the 1992 camping season.

The SYD reported that after much discussion within the youth department, it was requested that a Recreation Area Fund be established at the Home Office, in an effort to one day build a recreational area without using any Society funds.

It was determined that the Little Miss/Mr. SPJST Contest was a district func­

tion and did not require any action by the Supreme Lodge.

REAL ESTATE OWNED - Secretary-TreasurerMikeska was given the oppor­ tunity to report on a phone offer just received for cash purchase of RBO No. 176, the 5 acres owned in Burleson County, Texas. The cash offer was for $7,000. No title policy or survey would be furnished and the sale would be under Special Warranty Deed. After discussion, it was decided on motion by Director Vavra, seconded by President Leshikar, to accept the offer. Motion carried unanimously.

SPJST RECREATION AREA • Consideration was given to the request to start up a Recreational Area Fund. The consensus of opinion was that a fund could not be established because the matter of a Recreational Area had been put to the delegates by mail poll and was not approved by the delegates.

The next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge meeting was set for July 8, 9 and 10, 1991 to begin at 8:30 a.m.

There being no further business, Chairman of the Board Pokladník adjourned the meeting at 3:30 p.m.

Although the turnout was less than expected, any lack of attendance was made up by the spirit and participation of those present. Included in correspondence was a letter from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Chairman of the Board Dan Balusek stating that a fund is being set up designated for the purchase of a piano for the Taylor Rest Home No. I. Dona­ tions from any person(s) will be ap­ preciated.

The members unanimously agreed that a percentage of profits made from social games at the June 2 picnic would be donated to the piano fund.

The board minutes were read by Dorothy Pechal in the absence of secretary of the board, Judy Pechal.

President Reese read a letter from the Supreme Lodge announcing the SPJST Scholarship recipients: Chris Chlapek, Melissa Bravenec and Sharon Kopriva.

The May 17 Social Night will in­ clude decorating the hall for May Pete.

At the June 21 Social Night Mr. Joe Wilson will demonstrate/teach various dances.

The mowing/maintenance job was given to Edwin Pechal.

The 1992 convention is a short year away. In preparation for this an elec­ tion of delegates is nearing, therefore, a list of members meeting delegate eligibility requirements is needed. At the July meeting, an· Eligibility Com­ mittee will be selected to compile such a list.

5. Marcella and Jaroslav Kleprlik still residing at Heartland of San An­ tonio. · Youth Achievement Day will be held in San Antonio on July 7th. Sister Frankie Campbell, youth leader of Lodge 133, asked the members to help with this endeavor. Suggestions made by the Planning Committee for the 75tb celebration of 'the founding of Lodge 133 were dis­ .cussed. It was decided that a dinner 'would be catered. Members were asked to find any photos or mementos · they had and put them aside to bring to the celebration in March 1992. More plans will be made in the coming months.

Members celebrating April birthdays included Brother Emil Matula, Brother George Schulz and Sister Julia Sefcik.

The picture will appear in the May issue. 'Split the Poť was won by Viola Kurtz and Otto Hurta. Attendance prizes were won by Frankie Campbell­ !st, Karen Popp-2nd and Frances Schimcek-3rd.

Dear Members and Friends: We hope all the mothers had a wonderful "Mother's Day." It was a beautiful day here and we had a large turnout and a lot of good food.

After the dinner, the youth club read a special tribute to mothers which was written by Brother Bob Cleveland and then they presented a plant in a ter­ rarium to the mothers.

Sister Carolyn Cleveland presented beautiful plants to Jewell Clark, the oldest mother at 88 years and to Sister Venezia Steinman, our youngest mother at 20 years. Sister Mary Jean Stoeppelman won the door prize given by the youth club, also a beautiful plant.

Our meeting followed and the reports were approved. We were happy to have Brother Walter Hosek of Dallas join us.

We ended the meeting with a special birthday cake and good wishes to Mary Renfro, Anna Johnson, Al Jirik, Jason Jirik and Will Gaye. May you all have many more. Sister Henrietta Milan was our door prize winner.

We extend our congratulations to Brother B.J. Cleveland who directed his first play "Crimes of the Heart" and got great reviews.

Brother Ky Cleveland got cast as one of the children in Merry Wives of Windsor, that will be held in Trinity Park on June 11th.

Sister Lesli Poindexter got quite a surprise last Monday (6th) while she and Brother Tat Milan were on a Hot Air Ballroom touring the city, when he proposed to her and gave her a ring.

When they came down, a table was all set up with champagne and hors ď oeuvres on the grounds of Boswell High School. They left on Wednesday

for a 9-day trip to Maui, Kona and Honolula in Hawaii and will spend the last two days in San Francisco. Con­ gratulations and we hear the big day will be in the Fall.

Sisters Jeanie Mason, Billie Jo Bartlett and Evelyn Horak bad a wonderful few days in Las Vegas 'and got to stay in the Penthouse of the new Mirage Hotel.

Brother Kent Johnson is leaving today to try his luck in Las Vegas.

The Golden Girls attended the grand opening of the new Sokol Hall in Ennis and spent two days celebrating and then went back for 2 days during the Polka Festival. It was great seeing old friends from far and near. These were 2 wonderful weekends.

We extend our sincere sympathy to the families of Sister Rose Bartosh who passed away in Penelope and to Sister Mary Elizabeth (Becan) Phillips on the loss of her husband, Bill Phil­ lips in Houston. May they rest in peace.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 14 at 3:00 p.m.

Lodge Rozkvět No.172, Pasadena We held our regular monthly meeting April 24 at 7:30 p.m. President Brother Jerry Dressler called the meeting to order in Czech and English.

Then he called on Brother Alvin J. Sefcik to lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and a moment of silent prayer for our deceased brothers and sisters was held.

He then introduced the guest, State Youth Director Sister Claudette Reese, and District V Youth Counselor Sister Marie Stayton.

All correspondence was read and ac­ acknowledged. The officers and com­ mittees all gave their reports and were received with interest.

Old business and new business were also acted on .

President Jerry Dressler called the members' atterition to the honor that was bestowed upon Brother Raymond Skrabanek by Jacinto City, Texas; the mayor and the council presented a Proclamation to Brother Skrabanek for many years of outstanding service to the city and community. The members congratulated Brother Raymond Skrabanek, with a long round of ap­ plause. Brother Skrabanek is also serv­ ing on the board of trustees for our Lodge No. 172. Thank you, Brother Skrabanek, for your good work, and many more years of good service.

The youth club returned to the meet­ ing. Brother Dressler called on Sister Dottie Watkins, youth leader of Lodge 172, Sister Claudette Reese and Sister Marie Stayton to present the special youth award to James Pruitt. Sister Claudette Reese presented him with a camera for the outstanding work and ability. The members also gave him a big round of applause. Keep up the good work, James.

Our next meeting will be May 22 at 7:30 p.m., so let's everyone come and have another good attendance.

Sister Evelyn Mayes won the door prize. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. to enjoy some good pastry of cakes and pies and coffee.

April 14 we held our social/dance and despite the bad weather and lots of rain, we had a good turnout enjoyed by all.

April 8 we had our monthly work party; had lot of good help and got lots of work done.

May 6 we had our monthly work party, also had a good turnout of good workers. We were able to clean the whole dance floor (7200 square feet), then waxed it and were through by 1:30 p.m.; we also did some other work. Thanks to all of you who came to the work party.

We are having a delay getting our additional parking lot job done, due to the wet weather, however, we 're hoping the weather lets up so it all can be completed.

The majority of those present agreed that fellowship plays a large part in their attendance at these events.

Youth Leader Theresa Haag reported that San Antonio has been set as the site for the 1991 District VII YAD. It is scheduled for July 7th. A graduation party for Chris Haag will be held at Comal Bowl May 2nd. Lodge 185 Youth Club wi11 hold their next meet­ ing May 16 and Sister Haag reminded parents that camp forms and T-shirt or­ ders are due in May. She also asked that anyone interested in sewing bibs and lap robes for the nursing home project, please pick them up and return them at the June meeting.

President Haag reported that a decision had not yet been reached for location of the District VII fall meet­ ing. It was the majority decision that Lodge 185 offer to host the meeting at the Bavarian Village.

Members were reminded that the District VII spring meeting will be at the Hermann Sons Hall in Yoakum on April 28, 1991.

Betty Stigall was accepted as a new member of Lodge 185. We are proud to have Sister Stigall as part of our fraternal organization.

The next meeting will be held June 20 at Preiss Heights, beginning with swimming at 5:00 p.m. A meal of bar­ becued ribs and hot dogs will be served at 7:00 p.m. The lodge will fur­ nish the meat, drinks and eating uten­ sils. Bavarian Village has offered to donate the ice and members are asked to bring salads, vegetables, desserts, chips and dips or other accompani­ ments.

Sister. Jarolyn Popp suggested the door prize drawing be limited to those members who are in attendance. Susan Bohnenberger motioned that this change be made, excluding meetings at which parties are held, and increased to $15.00. Jody Friedel seconded; mo­ tion carried. April Haag was the win­ ner of the April door prize.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:04 p.m, Adult and youth members stayed for fellowship and to enjoy sharing Whitney Bohnenberger's birthday cake.

Julia and Ernest Dueser made a report on the District Ill spring meet­ ing held at Lodge No. 154 on April 14th.

Our dances are still very good.

A letter was received from the Supreme Lodge about happenings in the lodge; also a letter from the rest borne director about the need of a piano for S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I. After the meeting a luncheon was en­ joyed by all.

President Lowrina Lindemann an­ nounced the cooks for June and they are Mary Ehrett, Adela Kite, Delores Condon and Alice Bily. Georgia Buchanan volunteered for July so we need 3 more cooks for July.

Alice Bily reported on the son-in-law of Tilly and Lad Bily, who was hurt in a helicopter accident. Dalton Knight was very lucky; he didn't get killed, but was seriously hurt in his back; however, the doctors say he 'li recovery, but we offer our prayers to you, Dalton, Kay and Breana.

Florence Orsag joined our Birthday Club, and was unanimously accepted.

Willie Mae Ermis reported on the ticket sales for the drawing. I've named the gifts up to here, but I was told we have a bunch more gifts from anonymous donors, so buy your tickets now--3 for $1.00.

Helen Hegwood has the spinning wheel for the officers and sales repre­ sentatives, which should also be a big success.

Kathy Trefen made a motion, seconded by Gladys Pulley to pay $2.50 for extra cakes, being baked by our members, also those who can't cook should bring prizes for the gift table. The motion passed.

Josephine Buri and Willie Mae Stang won the door prizes.

The Calcutta game was won by Louise Kadlecek and Marie Pokluda.

Helen Hegwood asked for prayers for Lillian Finn, who lost her husband, Harry (Bubba) Finn suddenly. We will miss Bubba because he never ever missed our Birthday Club unless he had a good reason. He was a fine per­ son and lived his life to the fullest. I will write more about him in the next issue.

Spring Branch Community Center "Volunteers Of The Month For May 1991" Rose and Karel Sicner We are very proud to have the Sic­ ners here at the Spring Branch Com­ munity Center teaching our French language and Czech language and his­ tory classes. Rose was born in Paris, France, and Karel in Czechoslovakia.

Their interests lie in the study of other cultures and languages, and helping to keep them alive. They enjoy many eth­ nic activities and also like traveling and try to take a trip to Czechos­ lovakia on a yearly basis when pos­ sible. Karel also has experience directing Czech plays and musical productions.

The Sicners have lived in Houston, in the Spring Branch area, for over 30 years. They have raised 3 children, a son and two daughters and, needless to say, are very proud parents. Their son is an electrical engineer and com­ munications expert living in Califor­ nia. One daughter after receiving her teaching degree, began her career with Continental Airlines, and their second daughter recently graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Business. She is currently traveling in Australia.

Lodge 84 in Dallas, and on April 14 a few of our members attended District III spring meeting at Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Everyone was real nice and the food was very good. Tammi Dobecka was elected District III Flag Bearer.

The youth club had door prizes and "Mother of the Month" was Rooney Hrabal; she received a gift.

We are going to work on Father's Day gifts and scrapbook.

Our club members are working on their crafts for Y AD and working on talent.

Our next meeting will be on May 31 because the lodge is rented on June 2nd.

We will see you every Friday night so we can work on our crafts and scrapbook.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 185 Youth Host Spring Picnic

Adult members Dorothy Pape and Mrs. Haag enjoy the cookout.

The youth club of SPJST Lodge 185 hosted a spring picnic at Landa Park on April 5, 1991. Adults of the lodge were invited to participate.

The Social Committee consisting of April Haag, Kelly Reynolds and Holly Reynolds with Adult Chairman Susan Reynolds planned the hamburger cookout.

An Easter egg hunt was then held for the younger members of the club.

Cottonwood Youth Attend Many Activities Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 6 Youth Club meeting was held on May 5, 1991 at 2:30 p.m. with a fair attendance.

Cakes were taken to West Rest Haven by the youth members.

The youth also worked on Mother's Day gifts and worked on a social.

Lodge 25 Ennis Youth Club News The May l, 1991 meeting of Lodge 25 Youth Club was called to order at 7:04 p.m. The business discussed was YAD which is June 23; camp, July 15 to 18 and the Fraternal Festival on September22nd.

All members need to tum in money for the McDonald's Pancake Supper, YAD forms and camp forms as soon as possible.

Elections were held at our meeting.

New officers are as follows: President-Sheila Trojacek Vice President=Lisa Zabojnik Secretary=Julie Fowler Treasurer=Michael V. Fowler Sergeant-at-Arma-Sandra Trojacek and Jessica Honza.

The president adjourned the meeting at 7:41 p.m. After the meeting, all the members present stayed to make Mother's Day corsages.

The weekend of May 4 and 5 was the 25th annual Polka Festival. Our lodge entered a replica of a Czechoslovakian harvest wagon in the parade. It won the President's Award. Congratula­ tions to Lodge 25 for a job well done.

Byljeden kozel, bradu měl dlouhou, předlouhou a rohy jako šavle. Tomu se nelíbilo doma sloužit, šel do světa jinou službu si vyhledat. Jde kozel, jde, potkal ježka. Povídá ježek: "Kozle, kam jdeš?" "Nu, do služby!"

"To je dobré,'' pochvalovalsi ježek.

"Pojď se mnou, támhle v té chalupě u lesa budeme jablíčka trhati! Hospodář tam dobře platí." Kozel že půjde, tak šli.

U lesa stála chalupa, za chalupou byla zahrada, v té zahradě jabloň na jabloni a na každé tolik jablíček, až se větve prohýbaly. Ježek povídá: "Ty máš silné rohy. Zaklepej a já budu sbírat, na hromádku snášet!"

Kozel se do toho dal, chtěl ukázat, jakou má sílu, bil svými rohy do kmenů, až se jablíčka sypala jako krupobití. Ježek se napíchal jablíček na své pichláky, že je sotva nesl, pochvaloval kozla, odkutálel se a už byl pryč.

Vtom vrzla vrátka, šel hospodář.

Jak tam uviděl cizího kozla jablíčka klepat, honem na něj a začal mu je sázet. Kozel utíkal a křičel: "Takové neé! Takové neél" Zlobil se kozel na ježka, řekl si, že se po druhé napálit nedá, a pustil se lesem. Jde kozel, jde, potkal jezevce.

"Kozle, kam jdeš?" "Nu, do služby!"

"To se hodí," pochvaloval si jezevec. "Pojď se mnou, budeme sbírat ostružiny. Co nasbíráme, prodáme, polovice bude tvá!"

Kozelsi myslil,že by to mohl zkusit. Řekl, že půjde a šel.

Jezevec věděl o sladkých ostružinách, našli si je.

"Ty máš dlouhé rohy," povídá jezevec kozlovi. "Sehni mi kmínek, abych se nepopíchal!"

Tak kozel se vzpínal, kmínky podával, jezevec trhal. Už měli plný košík. Povídá jezevec: "Navrch musíme natrhat těch nejlepších, abychom ve Zbraslavicíchlépe prodali!

Jdi tuhle výš, snad tam rostou ostružiny sladší!"

Kozel poslechl, ostružiny hledal, zatím jezevec popadl kožík a utekl s ním pryč.

Kozel tam zůstal sám, měl zlost, EOvídá si: "Však já si dám teď pozor!"

Sel lesem dál. Jde, jde, potkal medvěda.

"Kozle, kam jdeš?" "Nu, do služby!"

"Pojď se mnou," praví medvěd, "budeš mi děti opatrovat! Rohy máš jako šavle, každý se tě bude bát, nikdo nám nevlezedo chalupy, když já budu pryč!"

Kozlovise taková lehká služba líbila, jenom, prý, dostane-li dobrý plat! "A kolik chceš?" ptal se medvěd.

"Za každý den dukát!" "Dobrá," řekl medvěd. "Každý večer ti vyplatím dukát, jen pojď!" Šli. Kozel sloužil, podlahu metl, postele stlal, chalupy ochraňoval, děti hlídal. Každý večer za tu práci dukát dostával. Jednou přinesl medvěd

dětem kus medu, a když viděl, že by kozel taky rád, dal i jemu. Kozlovi zachutnalo, povídá: "Kde takový med dělají?" "Tady u studánky jsou ... 'iací, v dutém stromě bydlí, med maji ! '' Koslovito nedalo, šel, dukáty si vzai s sebou. Našel strom, zabouchal tam svými rohy silně na kmen, chtěl, aby mu prodali. Včely to pobouřilo, kdo, tam tluče, vyletělya do kozla se daly.

Zalezlymu do kožichu, jak ho bodaly, tak ho bodaly. Kozel bečel neé! neé!

Utíkal, včely za.ním až z lesa ven a tam ho teprve nechaly. Šel kozel smutně po cestě ke vsi, vzdychal, neměl medu a peníze někde v lese ztratil. Šel domů a' doma slouží za kus trávy, za kus sena.

MEDVĚD POLAPIL ·ZLODĚJE. Pozdě večer přišel medvědář s medvědem do vesnice a v hospodě . požádal za nocleh.

Hospodskému zbyl práazdný chlév po velikém krmném vepři, jejž právě byl prodal. Tam zavřel ted ' medvěda.

Ale vepře vyhlídl si již dávno zloděj ze sousední dědiny, že jej příležitostně ukradne.

I vplížil se za tmavé noci tiše do dvora a opatrně bral se k zavřenému chlévu.Měl za to, žetam vepře jistě na­ jde. Otvírá zlehka a hmatá všude po vepři. Ale náhle se cítí ve drápech zvířete strašlivého, které hrozně mumlajíc, zuby své do něho zatíná.

Bídník křičí úzkostně, volaje pronikavě, aby mu přispěli ku pomoci.

I zběhli se kvapem všichni z celého domu a divili se nemálo, že zloděj tak nenadále se polapil. Pomáhali mu sice všemožně, ale ne bez obtíže vyprostili ztrýzněného zloděje z drápů medvědích.

A když zloděj poněkud z ran svých se vyléčil, byl odevzdán soudu.

Jak jsem se ztratila.

Bylo mi asi tři a půl roku, když jsem se mamince ztratila.

Hrávala jsem si vždycky před domem -- na sluníčku. Jednou nám babička psala, že nás přijede navštívit.

Napadlo mně, abych šla babičce na nádraží naproti, jelikož jsem tam často s rodiči chodila. Neřekla jsem nikomu nic a s panenkou v ruce jsem odešla.

Po chvilcese šla maminka podívat, kde jsem, a když mne nikde neviděla, začala mne hledat. Kdyžuž jsem chvíli chodila městem, dala jsem se do pláče.

Strážník mě viděl a ptal se, čí jsem a kam jdu. Řekla jsem, že se jmenuji Blanka Rojíková a bydlím Rožkovičovo nábřeží číslo 28 v Užhorodě a že jdu babičce naproti na nádraží. Strážník mě vzal za ruku a odvedl domů. Na tento příběh nikdy nezapomenu. v

Apparently, some insurance companies assume bigness will be the key to their survival.

In our opinion, that's a faulty assumption.

Witness the dinosaur. Being big didn't save him. In fact, it probably hastened his demise.

For the dinosaur grew too large for his limited brain. As a result, signals took too long to get from one part of the body to another. In the end, he simply couldn't respond quickly enough to change.

The real issue - then and now - is flexibility. Adapting to a changing, often confusing, environment.
