Tuesday, May 7••• "The Prazska Klamovska," a group of six young men from Praha (Prague) Czechoslovakia appeared at the Lone Star Hall (Lodge .No, 54 and Sokol West) from 7:00 p.m. to 11 :00 p.m. and performed with live entertainment before a crowd ap­ proximately one hundred Czech­ Moravian music-lovers.

There wasn't much time for any ad­ vance notice since we knew of their ar­ rival only four days in advance, however, word got around and, who came, certainly enjoyed the evening.

Several ladies brought enough food from each household to enjoy a fami- · ly-style meal with the musicians before going on the stage. These thoughtful and friendly ladies certainly deserve and have our sincere apprecia­ tion for making this possible.

The admission was free and dona­ tions started with Brother Joe Holasek, former West mayor, by stating a few words. The generous donations from those in attendance proved that Texas Czechs have a warm heart for people in the old country.

This group who played mixed-music as well as other type of music, proved to the audience that they enjoy per­ forming for entertainment.

The group was not sponsored by any organization; they get a 2-week vaca­ tion and take additional time off to make the trip to New York, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania and back to New York. They depart June 3rd. Bon Voyage and good luck!

*** Tile Internal Revenue is giving a break to part-time entrepreneurs.

Beginning this year, people who operate a small business to supplement their wages may be able to claim hef­ tier tax deductions for computers, fax machines, furniture as well as other equipment used in the venture. As before, they can immediately deduct up to $10,000 of the total cost of such items bought each year--a procedure known as "expensing." Any cost over $10,000 must be deducted as deprecia­ tion over several years. Struggling ventures, however, have often been limited by a second cap: The expens­ ing write-off couldn't exceed your in­ come from the business after deducting other expenses. Someone who bought $8,000 in equipment .but was left with $5,000 of net business income, for example, could claim an expensing deduction of only $5,000.

The Internal Revenue Service now says you can qualify for a bigger deduction by adding wages from your regular job to your business income when figuring the cap. The payoff is less total taxable income--and less tax. ***

One to four million persons are believed to harbor hepatitis C, a virulent strain that is often symptom­ less until the liver is badly damaged.

The recent approval of a drug to treat advanced cases has prompted free screenings during May for the disease.

Schering-Plough, makers of the drug Intron A, is sponsoring the blood tests at about twenty hospitals. Researchers believe hepatitis C is spread through infected blood; those at risk are health­ care workers, intravenous drug users, people who have been on dialysis and anyone who received a blood trans­ fusion before May 1990. (All blood donated since then has been screened for the virus.) The American Liver Foundation, at (800) 223-0179, can refer you to the closest screening as well as to hepatitis specialists. A doctor's office can also send out blood for a $60 to $90 test. Most health in­ surance plans cover the fee.

Twins Honored At April Supreme Lodge Meeting Home Office Employees Dorothy Stuchly and Doris Tyroch were honored at the April Supreme Lodge meeting on April 10, 1991 for twenty­ five years of devoted service. They were presented with a monetary check and a spring corsage. Making the presentation were Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and Vice President Ber­ nice Gebala.

During Dorothy's 25 years of employment she has served under two financial secretaries; namely, Brother Ben Zabcik and présent Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas. Dorothy is married to Raymond Stuchly. They have two children, Kayla and Kristopher. .

Doris Tyroch is employed in the Vice President's Department under the direction of Bernie Gebala and has also served under the late Brother Joe B. Hejny.

Dorothy and Doris were both praised for their loyalty, cooperation and good work habits.

The Supreme Lodge and staff wishes these two fine ladies much success in the future.'

It was approved by UT System Board of Regents in 1990 after the board ac­ cepted gifts and pledges from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, an organization formed more than· 30 years ago to promote the Czech language and to foster cultural Czech preservation through higher education.

UT Austin is the only university in

Texas that has an ongoing Czech lan­ guage program.

University President William H. Cunningham hosted a reception for Klimová' at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library the day before the lec­ ture. Nearly 200 invited guests from around the state attended, including many contributors to the Czech chair.

-SPJST"Economic reform is unthinkable without a private sector," said Klimová during a lecture last week. "And to do this we have to have a certain climate - one that supports risk taking."

Czechoslovakia held its first post­ war democratic elections in November 1989 after a public outcry for reform forced the Communist government to step down. "Immediately afterward there was a period of great euphoria and Czechoslovakians thought any­ thing was possible," said Klimová.

11N ow the euphoria has passed and we realize there are a great many problems to deal with, including the public-health system, the environment and quality of life in general."

"We wanted to return to a market economy, introduce a parliamentary democracy and primarily we wanted to return to Europe," said Klimová.

Czechoslovakian ambassador to the United States since 1990, Klimová came to the university to discuss the transition to democracy in Czechos­ lovakia. Her talk was held in conjunc­ tion with the establishment of the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at UT Austin.

Events began to change in Czechos­ lovakia in 1989, the ambassador ex­ plained to a crowd April 22 at the Bass Lecture Hall. "Two main things hap­ pened -- changes in the international climate (the Berlin Wall coming down, for example) and the fact that Czechoslovakians began to lose their fear," said Klimová. Another trigger­ ing force was the public's reaction to the "brutalization" of student demonstrators by the Czechoslovakian police, she said.

Klimová also credited Radio Free Europe for the change in government.

According to the ambassador, there are three basic priorities for the country's economic reforms including convertibility of the monetary unit, deregulation and reintroduction of property rights.

"We need an integration of the Czechoslovakia economy into the world economy," said Klimová. "The world economy has to accept us and foreign capital must begin coming into our country."

"What we need are markets to replace the Soviet markets," she said.

Klimová emigrated to the United States as a child and returned to Czechoslovakia with her parents in 1946. She studied at the Prague School of Economics and later taught at the Charles University in Prague where she specialized in the history of economic thought. Klimová defended her doctoral thesis on the U.S. economy at the Economics Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science in 1966.

In addition, Klimová'was a member and secretary of the Czechoslovak Helsinki Committee that monitors human rights.

A group of Texas Czechs raised $500,000.00 to endow a chair in Czech studies at UT Austin to ensure the con­ tinued offering of Czech language,

After 5 games were played by everyone, a. delicious noon meal was served by Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

After the meal, 4 more games were played by everyone and this revealed the first place winners and a tie for second and third place so we con­ tinued with the playoffs. After the playoffs the winners were as follows, and these members carried home the trophies, namely: First Place Team -- W.D. (Bill) Hol­ man and W.G. Gainer of Lodge No. 187, Round Rock.

Second Place Team -· Clarence Sef­ cik and Donnie Suehs; of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

Third Placed Team -- Weldon Galler and Robert Seith of Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Fish to go will be served from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and regular fish meal to be served at 11 :30 a.m. with plenty bread, catsup, cole slaw and chips, all you can eat, for $6.50 per adult and $2.75 per child, 6 to 12.

President Elizabeth Walther called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. The pledge to the flag · was recited in unison. A moment of silence was ob• served for departed members.

A thank you note was read from 4-H members for use of the hall. They held their "Spring Fever Dance" on April 5 in our lodge building.

Rodger W. Kalina was awarded the SPJST Scholarship.

Financial Secretary Eddie Mae Huebner gave the April 1 bank balance. President gave the bar balance. The building fund balance was unavailable: District IV Director Stanley Broz gave us a report on lodge matters. He· stated that September 22 will be Czech Day in Belton. The fall District IV "Fun Day" will be held in Lubbock on September 8, and the spring District IV meeting will be held in Seymour.

Youth Leader Connie Havlak reported having ten members. Her group put on an outstanding skit at the District IV spring meeting on April 28 in Wall, Texas.

The District IV YAD will meet in Rowena on July 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in SPJST Lodge No. 49 hall.

At our last lodge meeting, the mem­ bers voted to let youth members use our lodge's snowcone machine to make their sales. Elizabeth Urbanek moved we donate the syrup on hand to the youth, but let them buy cups and ice. Pat Tomlinson seocnded the mo­ tion. The youth will be held respon­ sible for the use of this machine.

Pat Tomlinson moved that the 50year membership pin award ceremony be held September 20 at our regular game night. Emma Havlak seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Wednesday, May 8, the fire in­ surance was re-appraised for added purchases in our lodge building.

President Walther gave a report on the Officers' Workshop held in Hol­ land, Texas. Five Lodge No. 49 mem­ bers attended.

Contributors to the Birthday Fund were Stanley Broz, Martha Broz and Lula Maracek.

Cash door prizes went to Elizabeth Urbanek and Connie Havlák. Both donated their prizes to the Birthday Fund.

The special prize went to absentee Glen Burnie Marácek. A member must be present to claim it. The money was, therefore, returned to the pot.

Runnels-Concho­ Tom Green Counties To Host State CHS The Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties Czech Heritage Society of the Concho Valley extends a cordial invitation to all chapters to attend the State Czech Heritage Society meeting and seminar in Rowena, Texas.

The meeting will take place Satur­ day, June 8 in .the SPJST hall in Rowena. State officers will present an interesting and informative program.

Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m.; a noon meal will be catered.

Motels are available in Ballinger and San Angelo for those wishing to come earlier.

The August meeting of our local Cl;IS chapter will be cancelled since we had a special called meeting last month.

Our next regular meeting will be · · Sunday, September 29 and then again Sunday, December 8 at which time we will hold our Christmas party. The meetings will start at 2:30 p.m.

The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the introduction of the May Pete Royal Court and the crowning of the May Pete Queen Laura Gibson. Youth Club members will dance around the tradi­ tional May Pole wrapping it with the colorful ribbons to -celebrate the ar­ rival of spring.

SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar will present a description of the traditional May Pete.

Sgt. John Mitchell, who recently returned from the Persian Gulf, will also address the audience.

An afternoon march led by District II Queen Melanie Zavodny and King Jason Reese, joined in by the entire royal court will conclude the afternoon portion of the May Pete.

A meal will be served around 5:30 p.m. The May Pete grand march will be held at 8:00 p.m. with music provided by the Silver Spur Band .

Leading the grand march will be by Seaton's May Pete Queen Laura Gib­ son and her escort, B. J. Pechal. They will be followed by all of Seaton youth members, May Pete queens and kings from Elgin, Round Rock and Taylor and also SPJST district queens and kings from throughout the state. The youth involved in the May Pete are 6 to 18 years old.

The event is open to the public.

There is no admission for the after­ noon activities. There will be a

charge for the meal and dance.

May Pete Queen Laura Gibson is the daughter of Tom and Margaret Gibson of Temple. She is 15 years old and a freshman at Temple High School.

Laura has been a member of the SPJST for 7 years and a youth club member for 6 years. She has served on the Scrapsook Committee and was a mem­ ber of the 1987 State Teen Beseda Dancers. She is a member of the Temple Cloverleaf 4-H and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her hobbies are golf, ceramics and needlework.

Youth Letters Lodge 40 Youth Club Meeting Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club held their meeting on May 5 at 12:30 p.m. at the El Campo-Hiilje SPJST Hall. .

In absence of our treasurer, Jared Dybala collected dues.

We had two birthday celebrants for the month of May. They were Brian Kutach and Jody Krpec. We also drew names for door prizes.

We had a party for our high school senior graduate, Darren Dybala. We had a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings. Each one of us made a graduation card for Darren for our May project.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Held Easter Activities The Hill Country Lodge 185 Youth Club met at Landa Park in New Braun­ fels on March 21, 1991 for their Easter egg hunt and picnic social. We had a delicious meal of grilled hamburgers with all the trimmings. Members par­ ticipated in the Easter egg hunt and played on the playground equipment.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 3 from Strick­ land Funeral Home in Caldwell with Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Joseph Polasek officiating. Interment fol­ lowed in New Tabor Brethren Church Cemetery near Caldwell, Texas under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, Bryan-College Station Brethren Church or your favorite charity.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to ex­ press our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother JOSEPH J. SKRIV ANEK, JR.,

age 77, of Cooks Point community, who died Friday morning, February 1, 1991 in a Temple hospital.

Brother Skrivanek was born June 6, 1913 in Cooks Point community near Caldwell,Texas.

A lifelong educator, he received his early education in Cooks Point and was a graudate of Caldwell High School. He received his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

He also did postgraduate work at the University of Houston and Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

In addition, he served as high school band director and choir director of East Bernard High School, Rosenberg High School band director (now known as Lamar-Consolidated High School), A&M. Consolidated High School principal, Anson Jones and Lamar Junior High School band direc­ tor in Bryan.

Brother Skrivanek retired in 1975 from the Modem Language Arts Department of Texas A&M University teaching Czech and Spanish.

An active farmer and rancher, Brother Skrivanek had been a registered polled Hereford breeder since 1952 and was a member of the American and Texas Polled Hereford Association, National and Independent Cattlemen's Association, served as president of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas, also was active in many civic and community or­ ganizations.

Brother Skrivanek was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Rosenberg Masonic Lodge AF&AM and the Arabia Shrine Temple Scottish Rite in Houston. He was an organizing mem­ ber and choir director of the Bryan­ College Station Brethren Church and was a veteran of World War II, having

who passed away on Monday, April 8, 1991 in a Bryan hospital. Brother Hejl attained the age of 72.

Bom in Cedar Creek, Brother Hejl was a lifelong resident of Bryan. He was a farmer and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17 in New Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Rosie Hejl and by a brother, John Hejl.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie Hej} of Bryan; a son, James Hejl of Bryan; a daughter · and son-in-law, Lind I and Ralph Ramirez of Cedar Creex; five brothers and four sisters­ in-la.. , Henry and Annie Hejl of Col­ lege Jtation, Tom and Lillie Hejl of Bryan, Ed and Mary Hejl and Rudy Hejl, all of Snook, Frank and Jeannie Hejl of Bryan; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Liddie Owens of Hearne and Albina and Henry Gold of Texarkana, Arkansas; also two grandchildren; a great-grandchild and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Brother Hejl were held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 1 al Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. The Rev. Thomas Nitchke of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bryan officiated. A rosary was recited Wed­ nesday, April 10th. Burial was at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Sam Houston No. 73, Seymour on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister BERmA OLIVIA SYPTAK, who passed away at Westview Care Center at the age of 83 years.

Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Mon­ day, April 22 at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Culwell and Dr. Hart officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.

She was born August 7, 1907 in Yoakum, Texas, moving to Baylor County at an early age. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, where she was head of the nursery department.

Her husband, Eddie Albert Syptak, died in 1958.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Joe of Seymour; a sister, Ola Mae Hilton of Yucaipa, California; three brothers, Jessie Crockroft of Burnett, Texas, Norman Cockroft of Wichita Falls, Texas and W.T. Crockroft of Seymour, Texas and two grandchildren.

May she rest in eternafpeace.

Dopisy jsme měli od Laura Gibson a Judy Holiday.

Sestra Dolores Škrabánek přečetla Dostal jsem starou čítanku. Bylo jí protokol z minulé schůze a byl přijat 75 let. Chudáček! Přední deska na ní tak, jak byl napsán. nebyla a žlutý papír jen se lámal. Jen Zprávy úředníků byly dobré a trochu čítankou zatřásti, byl by z ní Dorothy Pecholová podala zprávu za učiněný prach. Knihy jsou asi jako lidé Dozorčí výbor. a stáří žádnému krásy nepřidá.

Stipendium od řádu č. 47 dostali Otevřel jsem pomalu tuto knihu a Chris Chlápek, Sharon Kopřiva a vzpomínal jsem, kdo asi si ji koupil, Melissa Bravenec. kdo z ní naučil se čísti. Snad byla to Náš piknik bude 2. června 1991 a kniha celé rodiny - ale ať už tak či budeme mít zábavu, jídlo a občerstvení onak, podíváme se do obsahu. Abyste pro všechny. V 8 hodin v sobotu ráno nebyli zvědavi, podařilo se mi vybrati a bude "Den práce." (Work Day) pohromadě udržeti trochu té staré Narozeniny budou slavit Mary moudrosti, která hodí se i na nynější Vašíček, Ann Hejl, Henry Mareš, čas. Rozhodl jsem se, že pošlu hrst těch Donna Pechal a Raymond Mikeska. vzpomínek a věřím, že přijmou je Výročí sňatku budou slavit George a děti i dospělí jako pozdrav od našich Marie Pavelka a R.J. a Judy Pechal. babiček a prababiček.

Losování vyhrál v Martha Palla, Della Mareš, .Rose Marie Orsag a Ann Balusek.

Naše příští schůze bude se pořádat 4. června.

V 6:30 hodin budou zákusky Veverka skákala s větvice na větvici i spadla přímo na spícího vlka. Vlk (svačinka - "Covered Dish") a schůze vyskočil a chtěl ji sežrati. Veverka však začne v 7:30 hodin.

Také oslavíme svátek tatínků a gra­ prosila, aby ji pustil. duantů.

Vlk pravil: "Nu dobře, pustím tě, · ale p.ověz mi, proč vy veverky jste tak veselé. Mně je pořád smutno, a vy tam S pozdravem, nahoře jen hrajete a skáčete." · Emily Stuteville Veverka odpověděla: "Pustíš-li mne v dříve na strom, povím ti to; teď se bojím."

Vlk ji pustil, veverka vylezla na strom a odtud volala: "Tobě je proto smutno, že jsi zlý. Zloba ti užírá srdce.

Milé sestry a bratři: My veverky jsme veselé proto, že nikomunic zlého neděláme."

Naše schůze v dubnu se konala 21. a prezident řádu bratr Triliček jí zahájil ve 2 hod'ny odpoledne.

Všichni úředníci byli přítomni.

Vosk záviděl cihle, že je tak tvrdá.

Po slibu věrnosti vlajce uctili jsme "Kde a jak jsi nabyla takové památku zesmulých členů jednou tvrdosti?" otázal se jí. minutou ticha. Bylo přítomno 27 členů "V ohni!" odpověděla cihla. a 4 hosté.

"Toho mohu také zkusiti," vece Tajemnice řádu Jarolyn Poppová vosk. Skočí do plamene a - horkem se přečetla zprávy z minulé schůze a vše rozplyne. bylo přijato beze změny. Pak podala Co jednomu jest na prospěch, může finanční zprávy a ty byly též přijaty jinému býti na škodu. beze změny.

Na listě nemocných je sestra Ann Špačková, má zlomený kotník a zápěstí, je v Bexar County nemocnici, Jason Burley (vnuk bratra a sestry Matulových) je uzdraven, cítí se velmi dobrě, Mary a James Kostelnik se cítí Přimlouval se ječmen ku pšenici: dobře, a Rudy Kutač se cítí mnohem "Pojďme tam, kde zlato rodí se, však lépe. nám dobře k radosti hodí se."

Nejvíce času bylo věnováno o Pšenička pravila: "Tobě, ječmeni, rozhodování o přípravách našeho 75 dlouhé jsou vousy a krátký rozum. Nač výročí, které bude příští rok v dubnu, nám medle za zlatem jíti? Nechmež, ať čas rychle utíka a bude to tu rychleji samo pro nás přijde." než si uvědomíme.

Sestra Frankie Campbellová oznámila, že budeme mít "Den Mládeže" 7.července, bude se to konat v na stejném místě co držíme naše schůze. Bude to v neděli tak sestra Milé sestry a bratři, Campbellová zve všechn y členy budeli Předseda Tim Reese zahájil schůzi 5. jim to možné aby přišli a podporovali května ve 2 hodiny odpoledne. naší mládež.

Vlajky nastolili E.J. Pechal a James Prezident řádu jmenoval výbor pro Škrabánek. schválení žádosti o členství, Viola Gertrude Kahlig a Ann Balusek Kurtzová, Míla Phelpsová a Evelyn navštívily naši schůzi.

Matulová, žádost byla schválena tak Na lístku nemocných byli Florence máme novou členku Dana Mikeska, Martha Palla, Dana Glaser, Schimčeková.

Jerry Chupík, Laura Peebles, Robert Svatební výročí v dubnu slavili Ray a Thomason a Frank Vašek.

Richard Valton a jeho kočka.

I Před mnoha lety žil v Anglii chlapec, který se jmenoval Richard Valton. Říkali mu Ríša. Tatínek a maminka mu zemřeli, když byl ještě malé dítě. Žena, která se o něho starala, byla velmi chudobná.

Ríša někdy ani nesnídal ani neobědval a býval rád, dostal-li aspoň suchou kůrku chleba.

Přece však vyrostl a stal se z něho bystrý chlapec. Rád poslouchal, co si lidé povídali, a mnohému se tak naučil. Často slýchal, jak venkované hovoří o Londýně. Nikdy to veliké město neviděli, avšak věřili, že všechny ulice jsou tam dlážděny zlatem a stříbrem, že každý je tam velmi bohat a že tam po celý den hraje hudba.

Jednoho dne přijel do vesnice ·····"". tažený osmi černými koni, kteří měli na hlavách zvonečky. Ríša viděl vůz státi před dveřmi hostince a myslil si, že něco tak krásného jistě asi jede do Londýna.

Když později vyšel z hostince majitel toho vozu, tázal se ho Ríša, směl-li by jíti s nimi vedle vozu. Když ten muž zvěděl, že hoch nemá ani otce ani matky a že jest velmi chud, dovolil mu to.

Byla to cesta pro mladého hocha velmi dlouhá; ale na konec přece jen dorazil dovelkého města Londýna.

Hoch pospíchal, aby uviděl ty ulice dlážděné zlatem a stříbrem. Hledal je celý den.

Kdysi viděl zlatý peníz a věděl, že za něj lze nakoupiti mnoho krásných věcí.

Myslil si, že by si mohl nakoupiti, co by chtěl, kdyby se mu podařilo zved­ nouti ze zlaté ulice kus dláždění.

Nebohý Ríša pobíhal sem a tam, až se velmi unavil. Začalo se stmívat a on nenalezl ani nejmenšího kousku zlata.

Sedl si tedy do tmavého kouta a plakal, až usnul. Ráno se probudil velmi hladov, avšak k jídlu neměl ani kouska chleba. Měl takový hlad, že zapomněl i na zlaté dláždění, a myslil jen na jídlo.

Chodil po ulicích a každého koho potkal, prosil o peníze, aby si mohl koupiti něco k jídlu.

"Jdi pracovat a vydělej si, lenochu!" říkali někteří. A jiní šli dále a ani se na něcho nepodívali.

"Rád bychpracoval," myslil si Ríša.

Na konec byl tak hladov a unaven, že nemohl jíti dále, a proto si sedl ke dveřím velkého domu. Kuchařka, která právě vařila oběd, ho uviděla a zvolala: "Co tu děláš, kluku?

Nepůjdeš-li odtud, vyleji na tebe hrnec vody. Je hodně vřelá, že hned vyskočíš!"

Tu právě šel pán toho domu k obědu. Když uviděl otrhaného chlapce u dveří, pravil: "Co zde děláš, synku?

Myslím, že jsi již dosti stár, abys pracoval. Nejsi ty nějaký lenošný chlapík?"

"Ne, nejsem!" řekl Ríša. "Já bych rád pracoval, ale nikoho tady neznám a jsem již od hladu všechen nemocen."

"Ubožáku, pojď se mnou! Snad ti nějak pomohu," řekl pan Frank., Hodný kupec dal mladému chlapci dobrý oběd a přikázal kuchařce, aby mu přidělila nějakou práci.

Ríšovi by se v novém domově bylo líbilo, kdyby jen byl nemusil sloužiti mrzuté kuchařce, která se s ním vadívala od rána do večera a často ho i pohlavkovala a bila koštětem.

Na konec se dověděla Frankova dcera Anička, jak kuchařka s Ríšou zachází. Řekla jí, že ji ihned propustí, nebude-li k chlapci laskavější.

Od té doby se Ríšovi vedlo již lépe.

Ale brzy mu nastalo nové trápení. Ríša spával v podkrovní světničce. A tu každou noc lezlo děrami v podlaze do světničky mnoho krys a myší. Dělaly takový hluk, že Ríša nemohl spáti.

II Jednou vyčistil nějakému pánovi bo­ ty a dostal za to od něho peníze. Hned se rozhodl, že si koupí kočku. A druhého dne opravdu potkal děvče, které neslo v náručí kočku.

"Dám ti za kočku tyto peníze," řekl.

"Dobře. Prodám ti ji," řeklo děvče, uvidíš, jak umí chytat myši. · Ríša donesl kočičku do podkrovní světničky a dával jí každý den trochu ze svého jídla. Za krátký čas se ve svět­ ničce neobjevila ani jediná krysa ani myš a Ríša spával klidně po celou noc.

Jednou přichystal pan Frank svoji loď na obchodní cestu. Svolal své služebnictvo a tázal se, nemají-li něco, co by poslali po lodi na prodej.

Každý měl něco, co mohl prodati, jen Ríša neměl ani peněz ani zboží a proto zůstal v kuchyni. Anička si povšimla, že Ríša není mezi ostatními, a hned si pomyslila, proč as nepřišel. I řekla otci: "Chudák Ríša, také by měl míti něco pro štěstí. Mám tu v peněžence trochu peněz, smím pro něho poslat?"

"Ne, milé dítě. Každý musí dáti něco svého," řekl kupec a obrátil se k jed­ nomu ze svých služebníků: "Zavolej Ríšu!"

Když Ríša přišel do světnice, řekl mu kupec: "Copak ty chceš poslat po mé lodi?"

"Nemám nic, pane," odpověděl chlapec, "nic kromě kočičky, kterou jsem si koupil."

"Tak přines tu kočku a pošli ji po lodi!" pravil kupec.

Ríša šel do své světničky, přinesl nebohou kočičku a se slzami v očích ji podal kapitánovi na lodi. Všichni se smáli Ríšovu podivnému zboží, jen Anička se nesmála a dala mu peníze, aby si koupil novou kočku.

Kuchařka se proto na něho ještě více

zlobila a posmívala se mu, že poslal kočku na moře: ''Za kočku nedostanou ani tolik, abychom na tebe koupili pořádnou hůl."

Konečně to Ríša nemohl už déle vydržet a proto se rozhodl, že uteče.

Vyšel časně zrána a prchal z města.

Když už byl hodně daleko, posadil se na kámen a odpočíval.

Jak tak přemýšel, co má počít,

uslyšel z města zvoniti zvony. Chvíli naslouchal. Zdálo se mu, · jako by zvony říkaly: "Nechoď cestou necestou, vrať se, budeš starostou."

"Starostou v Londýně?" pravil sám k sobě. "To bych se měl dobře a jezdil bych v kočáře. Vrátím se a nebudu již myslit na mrzutou kuchařku, když se mám jednou státi starostou!"

A tak se Ríša vrátil a podařilo se mu vejíti do kuchyně a posaditi se ke své práci dříve, než přišla kuchařka.

III Loď, na které byla kočka, se dlouho plavila po rozbouřeném moři a byla na konec zahnána k cizí podivné zemi.

Lidé té země dotud ještě nikdy neviděliAngličanů. Proto přicházelive velkých zástupech, aby si prohlédli plavce a aby si od nich nakoupili krásných věcí, které plavci přivezli na lodi.

Kdyžto kapitán viděl, poslal několik nejkrásnějších věcí králi té země. Král byl tím potěšen a pozval kapitána na hostinu do svého paláce.

Kapitán přišel a všichni zasedli k hostině.

Sluhové přinášeli mnoho překrásných mis a stavěli je na drahé, zlatem a stříbrem vyšívané koberce.

Král a královna se posadili na měkké podušky a pokynuli kapitánovi, aby se také posadil.

Sotva se však dali do jídla, začalo se se všech stran sbíhati velké množství krys a myší. Kapitán byl velmi překvapen a pravil: "To je hrůza! Což si od těch myší neumíte pomoci?"

Král odpověděl: "Dal bych polovici svého jmění tomu, kdo by mě od nich osvobodil. Nejenom že nás obtěžují při hostinách, ale přicházejí i v noci a ruší můj spánek."

Kapitán vyskočil radostí, neboť si vzpomněl na malého Valtona a jeho kočku. Řekl králi, že má na lodi takové zvíře, které by usmrtilo všecky myši i krysy.

Král se velice zaradoval. "Přines mně to zvíře!" volal. "Vychytá-li myši i krysy, naložím ti loď zlatem a stříbrem."

Kapitán nejprve předstíral, že by se nerad se svou kočkou rozloučil. Ale potom přece slíbil, že kočku do králov­ ského paláce připusti.

"Pospěš, pospěš! Nemohu se toho podivného zvířete ani dočkat!" volal král.

Kapitán pospíchal ke svélodi a zatím y paláci připravovali novou hostinu.

Když se vrátil, bylo zase všude plno myší.

Kočka skočila s kapitánova ramene a v okamžiku zakousla mnoho krys a myší. Ostatní se s hrůzou rozutekly do děr.

Král a královna byli velmi rádi, že se tak lehce zbavili protivných krys a myší.

Král za to koupil od kapitána celý lodní náklad a potom mu dal ještě desetkrát tolik za kočku. Kapitán se rozloučil s králem a královnou a druhého dne se vydal na zpáteční cestu do Anglie.

Jednoho dne seděl pan Frank právě u stolu, když někdo zaklepal n... dveře.

"Kdo je to?" tázal se kupec.

"Já, kapitán vaší lodi. Přináším vám dobré zprávy z cesty."

Kupec otevřel a kapitán mu podal krabici plnou zlata a stříbra.

Potom vypravoval panu Frankovi příhodu s kočkou a ukázal mu bohatý dar, který poslala královna Ríšovi.

Jakmile to kupec uslyšel, svolal hned všecko služebnictvo.

"Zavolejte sem také Ríšu! Od dnešního dne mu budeme říkat 'pane Valtone'."

Někteří sluhové radili panu Frankovi, aby si z velkého pokladu něco ponechal a nedával všeckoRíšovi.

Pan Frank však odpověděl: "Nechci ho ošidit ani o haléř."

Když Ríša přišel, nabídl mu pan Frank židli. Ale Ríša se domníval, že si z něho tropí žerty.

"Nežertujeme, pane Valtone," pravil kupec. "Krapitán prodal vaši kočku králi v cizí zemi a přivezlvám za ni více bohatství, nežli jsem měl kdy já."

Pan Frank pak dal otevříti krabici se zlatem a stříbrem a vyložiti poklad.

Ríša nevěděl,co má radostí říci. Pro­ sil pana Franka, aby si vzal část zlata a stříbra za svoji dobrotu k němu.

Ne nechci nic. Je to vaše. Jistě toho pokladu dobře užijete," pravil kupec.

Ríša byl však velmi dobrosrdečný a nechtěl si všechno ponechati pro sebe.

Obdaroval kapitána, plavce i všechny služebníky pana Franka a nezapomněl ani na mrzutou kuchařku.

Po letech pak, když bohatý a štědrý Richard Valton dorostl v muže, stal se skutečně starostou města Londýna.

Bylastará došková chaloupka u lesa.

Jak rád jsem kolem ní chodíval! Sláma jejích došku porostla mechem, tu a tam pampelišky ji pozlatily. Dřevěné trámy splývaly v jedné harmonii s kmeny strojů, jež stály jí za zády.

Spokojenost zírala odevšad. Teď už dlouho chodím kolem a chaloupka je zavřena. Ptám se lidí v lese: "Cožpak drvoštěp už tady nebydlí?" "Nikoli, pane, dva měsíceuž ne. Zbohatl; zdědil několik tisíc. Odstěhovalse do města."

Zbohatl.

To znamená, že se svými několika tisíci chce žít život bez práce.

Chaloupka svou opustil, aby draho v městě platil pokojík bez slunce a vzduchu, z něhož není vidět oblohu, ani stromy, ani zeleň, kde musí dýchat zkažený vzduch, kde bude obklopen každým okamžikem svého života jen čtyřmi šedivými stěnami.
