actually actively disassociated yourself from the business.

The fraternal life insurance repre­ sentative, like the doctor, dentist, and the lawyer find that increased years bring increased earning power. This is true because of the fact that over a period of years a sales representative establishes contacts and friendships, and that they can write more business with less effort as in years they grow older. Another important factor in­ fluencing one who accepts Fraternal Life Insurance as a career is that of service to others. The more you serve the greater are your individual rewards.

Let us leave no false illusions. The Fraternal Life Insurance Field is a big field, with many problems. We don't glide by on clouds of ease, but rather are challenged for the best within us from the minute we begin field work.

Our profession is essentially one of helping others solve their problems.

We must be sympathetic, under­ standing, and yet aggressive in offer­ ing our product as a solution to their problem.

Many times we hear said of the life insurance business that one of its great advantages lies in the fact that we are our own bosses. This point bas always been accepted with some qualifica­ tions. It is an opinion and has been a method of operation that there is no such person as one without a boss. We may not be required to be at work at a certain time, take a specific amount of time off for lunch, have our work schedule planned for us, but if one is to succeed in the Fraternal Life In­ surance Field, they must have that burning desire to succeed and a con­ stant awareness of that conscience to which we refer to as the boss must al­ ways keep us aware of not only the problems in the fraternal life insurance field, but must keep us alerted to the vast responsibility that we, as fraternal representatives, have accepted.

Several times there have been con­ ducted surveys among field repre­ sentatives as to the number of calls as against the interviews, as against the sales, as against earnings each day.

These surveys have been for a month at a time and, always, our results have shown that every time a field repre­ sentative drives to a man's house, walks into his office, opens the gate, knocks on the door, he has earned as much as the skilled doctor who has spent years in medical school training for his profession. But there is one dif­ ference. The doctor makes visits · after he has been called. Consequently, the number of calls that he can make are limited. We are limited only by our willingness to pay the price of hard work, intelligent effort and conscien­ tious service.

Let us say to state managers, district managers, and fraternal field repre­ sentatives that in your career as a Fraternal Life Underwriter you have the opportunity to make an income sufficient to maintain a good standard of living, provide for an adequate retirement, provide for technical train­ ing for your children, render service to your community, be thanked by count­ less numbers of children, yet unborn,. and old men and women, who save for your persistence, would be spending the sun-setting years of their lives as an old man or Vl\9man without an in­ come. And while this is being ac­ complished, our circle of friends will continue to multiply as we increase our services.

There is an old, old adage that states: "A mother is the foundation of a home." That is true to a great extent, however, in the last few decades, that has lost some of its truth with all the divorces, single parents, broken homes and families, etc.

To those of you reading these lines, who still have your mothers living, consider how lucky you are -- honor her and value her sacrifices she made to help you become what you are today. True and regrettably there are exceptions, however, fewer than we think. There is very little that can com­ pare to a Mother's Love. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers!

You feel it when you drive past homes your persistence saved. You feel it when you shop at stores where the doors have been kept open because of your knowledge of business insurance. You feel it when you have a grateful letter from a boy just graduating from col­ lege. You feel it when you watch employees going home from work in factories which might have been closed if your key man insurance proposal hadn't hit home. You feel it one day when an elderly man says, "Bless you," because your product made possible his comfort.

This is one business that your checks do not stop when you stop, but through the system of renewals you are paid for a number of years after you have

DISTRICT I DIRECTOR Andrew Vavra presenting Age 96 Certificate to Jane Petrusek, honoring the occasion of her 96th birthday. A ceremony was held at the home of her daughter, Ruth Jurik, in Beaumont, Texas where Mrs. Petrusek now resides.

SPJS.T Member Reaches Grand Age Of 96!

Mrs. Jane Sabrsula Petrusek, member of SPJST Lodge No. 141, Sealy, Texas, representing an "SPJST Fami­ ly" of two sons, two daughters and several grandchildren, reached the grand age of 96 on April 18, 1991.

Mrs. Petrusek was honored April 23, 1991 at a ceremony held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth Jurik, where she now resides in Beaumont, Texas. A certificate honoring the oc­ casion was presented to Sister Petrusek

by District I Director Andrew Vavra.

Her husband, Frank Petrusek, deceased in 1974, was a longtime of­ ficer of SPJST Lodge No. 141, Sealy, Texas. Mrs. Petrusek's immediate family includes: sons, Ben Petrusek and wife Minnie of Metairie, Louisian­ na and Erwin Petrusek and wife Betty of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; daughters, Mrs. Irene Neshyba and husband Steve of Corvallis, Oregon, and Mrs. Ruth Jurik and husband Johnnie of Beaumont, Texas. Mrs. Petrusek also enjoys 14 grandchildren and 21 great­ grandchildren.

She married Frank Petrusek in 1920 and moved to Frydek, Texas. In 1928, they purchased a farm just outside of Wallis, Texas where she and her hus­ band began a lifetime career of farm­ ing the rich Texas soil. While she engaged in farming with her husband, many changes were taking place here in our country. The mule team used on their farm was replaced by mechanized tractors, the horse and carriages used for travel in Sister Petrusek's youth became Model T's, then the popular sedan of later years and finally the economized cars that she loves to travel in presently. The bi-plane and the sport of barnstorming have become jet-engine powered transportation and A LARGE NUMBER of youth participated in the youth program at the popular airshows drawing thousand of District I meeting; a portion of the group all from Lodge 17, NewTabor. spectators. These days Mrs. Petrusek reads about the space shuttle Dis­ covery, performing spectacular maneuvers above the earth's atmos­ phere.

Jane Petrusek is of the era to witness miracles. She is a part of a generation who has participated in a time never­ before parrelled in history. She stays active and healthy and enjoys garden­ ing and quilting. Since her cataract surgery in 1989, her favorite pastime is reading the newspaper. She also loves to entertain her great­ grandchildren and play dominoes with friends and family.

It is truly a privilege for our Society to honor Mrs. Petrusek as an "Age 96 THE REST OF LODGENO. 17 youth group from NewTabor.

Born the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sabrsula of Hostalkova, Czechos­ lovakia, Jane immigrated, with her family, in the year 1899 to Waller County, Texas. Later, in her teens, she moved.to Wallis, Texas.

Dear Members: Our lodge met Sunday, April 14, 1991 at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m.

President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge to the flag led by our youth club.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved. There was no correspondence.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky made her report.

Financial Secretary Hilmer Galetka , reported that the direct billing is going well and has not been completed, yet.

FAC Gaye Galetka read the informa­ tion she received on the Horseshoe Tournament to be held April 27th.

Our Annual Family Day was dis­ cussed. Due to conflicts in August, the members present voted to hold our Family Day on Sunday, July 14 at St. Mary' s dining hall with a noon meal to be served as usual. Plans and activities for the day will be made at the May and June meetings. We encourage members to circle their calendar now for July 14th.

The lodge voted to contribute $25.00 to the March of Dimes. Jeanette Bender will participate in this worthy fund-raising event.

Co-Youth Leader Gaynell Chudej reported that the youth club is working hard getting started, again. They will present a Mother's Day program at our next meeting; also April, May and June birthdays will be honored.

The meeting adjourned followed by refreshments and lunch.

Door prize winners were: Youth-­ Krystle Bender and Adult--Hilmer Galetka.

Our next meeting will be on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12 at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m. The lodge will furnish refreshments and pizza.

A fish fry will be held at SPJST Bleiblerville Hall on Sunday, May 19, 1991.

Fish to go will be served from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and regular fish meal to be served at 11:30 a.m. with plenty bread, catsup, cole slaw and chips, all you can eat, for $6.50 per adult and $2.75 per child, 6 to 12.

Also cakes and pies will be avail­ able. All members are asked to make and bring cakes and pies.

For recreation we will have a horse­ shoe tournament with registration at 1:00 p.m. and play beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Secretary Leona Macha called the roll of officers; all officers were present.

The minutes of March 20, 1991 meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence received during the month was read and acted upon.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the . minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved. She then read cor­ respondence from Sister Marie Janecka who wrote she will be able to come and receive her 50-year member­ ship pin, which will be awarded at our May meeting.

Sister Sophie Leshikar gave the Entertainment Committee report. For the May meeting the members are asked to bring desserts. The committee will also honor the mothers.

Fraternal Activities' report was given

by Sister Mary A. Langlotz. There were 28 members present at the April 8 social game night. Our next social game night will be May 13 at 7:00 p.m. Brother Jerry Pruitt and Brother Robert Seith won second place at the State SPJST Straight Domino Tourna­ ment; each received a trophy and a check.

There were 27 members from Lodge No. 66 attending the District Ill spring meeting in Fort Worth. Lodge No. 66 officers were elected to serve as Dis­ trict III officers, namely: George Paul­ ing, 1st vice president; Albert Banik, treasurer; Rosemary Banik, assistant youth counselor; and among the youth officers are: Jesika Tierce, president; Nicole Pruitt, secretary.

At the District III horseshoe contest, which followed after the meeting, Carol Pruitt and Susan Trickett won second place.

New members are Angeline J.. Urban, Angela M. Kucera and Jerry Kucera, Jr. Cheer and Condolence Committee reports were made by Jeanette Smith.

Get well cards were sent to Margaret Narovec, Georgie Pavlicek, Regina Adamcik, Lucille Cervenka and Leslie Dungan. Sympathy cards were sent to the L.A. Hykel family and the Marvin Matus family. They will also bring cheer baskets to the elderly members.

Youth Club report was by Youth Leader Gladys Yates. There were 13 members and 7 adults present at the youth meeting. They flew kites after today's meeting. They are getting ready for camp. On May 11 they will have a garage sale at the nursing home. On June 8 they will be in the Moody Desert Storm Parade.

Bookkeeper Emma Ceska gave the quarterly report; all is in good order.

Sgt. John F. Mitchell, a member of SPJST Lodge 47, is expressing his appreciation for the letters that were written to him during Operation Desert Storm. He was welcomed with a standing ovation after which he presented a plaque to the lodge.

President Tim Reese accepted the plaque on behalf of Lodge 47, Seaton.

The auditing chairman reported that all the books were in good shape.

There will be an election for a new member for the Entertainment Com­ mittee at the May meeting.

Our door prize winner was Geo. Pauling.

Members celebrating birthdays in April were James Yates, Arthur Langlotz and Ace Wiggley. The birthday cake was brought by Butch Wiggley.

The beer donated for our meeting was by Gladys Yates and Mary A. Langlotz in honor of their husbands' birthdays.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 12 at the SPJST-Sokol Hall, 5502 Kostoryz Road. We will start with a dinner at 1 p.m., then hold the monthly meeting after the meal; it should be around 2 p.m. Our lodge is furnishing the meat and each family is asked to bring a vegetable and a des­ sert to be served with the meal.

The day of meeting has been changed from the usual third Sunday to the second Sunday in May, because most of the officers have other com­ mitments for the third Sunday.

This is for all the members and their families, especially the mothers since it is Mother's Day. Bring your mother to the meeting and meal to enjoy the fellowship of other members.

Round Rock Lodge No. 187 To Hold Annual May Fete Round Rock SPJST Lodge No. 187 will hold its Annual May Pete on Saturday, May 11, 1991 at 6 p.m.

Mr. Charles Baumbach was selected as the 1991 May Pete King. The' 18year-old Pflugerville High School senior is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Baumbach. Charles bas been an active member of the lodge for over 4 years, and bas participated in the May Pete for the past 3 years. At Pfluger­ ville High School, Charles is very in­ volved with the FFA as well as 4-H. He is the vice president of local FFA District as well as president for his chapter. He has participated in live­ stock, and land judging all 4 years as well as having been a member of the leadership team all 4 years. Last year he received the Lone Star Farmer De­ gree for the FFA. After graduation, Charles plans on attending Texas A&M University and earning his de­ gree in Agriculture Science.

Lancaster Czech Course The Czech class at Cedar Valley Col­ lege in Lancaster has had four class meetings. So far the class has covered the alphabet, diacritical marks, colors, numbers, family members, adjectives, months, days of week, and gender agreement as well as speaking and reading.

Lectures have included Czech lan­ guage, history, Czech geography, Czech history, and famous Czechs of international stature.

Instructors Retta Chandler nee Slavikova and Ron Frnka appreciate the classes' positive response and the progress they have made.

A fall course is in the planning stages.

The United Methodist women brought cakes. Thelma Stehle 'brought a cake, Emil Sodolak family brought kolaches and Mrs. Emil Sodolak brought cookies. Volunteers Melva Hastings, Ida Gasch and Lydia Hortman helped serve cake, ice cream, punch and coffee to all.

Tuesday evening, April 30, George Lolley and Larry Ognoski provided music and singing.

Residents enjoyed all the activities during the month of April.

Thanks to all the denominations of churches and volunteers who do ser­ vices in the home for our residents.

The youngest member in attendance was Darcy Rae Vesel who is 3 months old.

The farthest traveled member was Sidney Kubesch who lives in Indiana.

From The State Youtb Director 1992 Rules For Mr. And Miss SPJST Contest AGE: Any SPJST female/male member at least 18 and no older than 22 as of January 1, 1992.

MEMBERSHIP: A member of SPJST at least 1 year prior to lodge candidate selection.

ATTIRE- MALE: Dress clothes, including a coat and tie (NO TUXEDOS) ATTIRE - FEMALE: Floor or tea-length formal gown.

MARITAL STATUS: Single through the time of the 1992 Convention.

THE FOLLOWING YOUTH CANNOT COMPETE: Any female who gets or has been pregnant or has borne a child.

Any male who has caused a female to get pregnant.

Any youth who was convicted or treated for the use of drugs or alcohol during the past year.

Any youth who was convicted for any criminal offense (excluding minor traffic violations) during the past year.

SPEECH: Same topic, time limit, and judging qualities as at district.

The judges for the three convention contests will be selected by the host lodge(s), with the consultation with the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge.

PRIZES AND REIMBURSEMENT: All finalists will each receive a wrist watch and an allowance of $75 for the period spent at the convention. In addition, each will be furnished a banquet ticket and three nights' stay (one room to be shared with a fellow contestant).

Mileage will be paid to the Victoria convention site and return home for one vehicle at the rate set by the convention.

Mr. and Miss SPJST will receive a cásh award of $250 each.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY: An autobiography of each candidate will be submitted direct to the Youth Department of the Supreme Lodge at least 15 days prior to the district competi­ tion, along with a recent photo. These forms may be secured from the local lodge youth leader, and in those lodges where there is no youth leader, they will be sent on request from the State Youth Director, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503.

TABULATION: Tabulation of the convention contests will be conducted by 3 persons selected by the State Youth Director. Following each contest, the judges' results will be placed in a special envelope by the State Youth Director and sealed until opened by the Tabulating Committee and announced by the Presi­ dent of the Supreme Lodge. In the case of a tie, only the Speech portion would be repeated and re-judged, judging to be on Speech Content and Delivery only.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 30 of New Taiton, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother EDWARD"ED" PETER FIALA, 92, longtime resident of El Campo, who died in a local hospital on Thursday, April 18, 1991 following a lengthy illness.

Brother Fiala was born November 3, 1898 in Weimar to the late Joseph and Anna Kunetka Fiala. He was a member of the local SPJST Lodge and he was a Catholic.

Vrazel's Polka Band has been play­ ing for 38 years and is heard Sunday afternoons on KMIL Radio, 1330 AM in Cameron on Alfred Vrazel's Polka Show. The band will make over 65 ap­ pearances during the year of 1991 and, approximately, one-third of those ap­ pearances will be in SPJST lodge halls, located throughout the State of Texas.

Vrazel's Polka Band from the Cam­ meron-Buckholts area, received high honors at the first Texas Polka Music Awards Festival held at the Bell Coun­ ty Expo Center in Belton, March 1517, 1991. Scheduled to be an annual event, the festival was visited by polka fans from across the country.

Albina Mikeska Honored On 90th Birthday

Ninetieth birthday cake for Sister Albina "Benny" Mikeska.

Mrs. Albina Mikeska of Temple, Texas was honored with a 90th birthday reception in the Fellowship Room at the Temple Brethren Church, Temple, Texas on April 13, 1991 at 2 p.m.

The hostesses were her daughters, Mrs. Georgia Mikeska Biery of Temple, Texas and Ms. Charlene Mikeska of Belvedene, California.

Mrs. Biery gave a history of her mother's life touching on many ac­ complishmentsof Mrs. Mikeska.

"Benny," as Albina is better known, was born to John and Marie Mucha Bravenec at Zabcikville, Texas on April 14, 1901, one year after her parents arrived in America from Ves­ tin, Czechoslovakia.

She and her husband, Tom Mikeska, operated several businesses in the Temple area until Mr. Mikeska died in 1973.

In 1979, she traveled to Europe with daughters, Charlene Mikeska and Ruby Billings (deceased) and three nieces at which time she met her half­ sister, Mrs. Frances Jarosek of Vestin, Czechoslovakia whom she had never met; Frances was left with an aunt when Albina's family came to America.

Benny is a lady of many talents among which are quilting, sewing and singing with the Seaton Lodge No. 47 Choral Group. She is active in her church work with the Christian Sisters, does volunteer work at local nursing homes and is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47. She loves playing "42," "84" and other social games, still does her own cooking and housework, and still drives her standard shift 1968 Chevrolet Nova car.

Approximately 150 guests attended the reception, some from California, Washington, Oregan, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Little Caymon Islands and many cities in Texas.

In the receiving line were her daughters, Georgia Mikeska Biery of Temple, Texas; Charlene Mikeska of Belvedene, California; Lani Devine of Ben Lomand, California; Dee Dee Lauer of Chico, California; Marsha Brown of Griffin, Georgia; Kenneth Billings of Burleson, Texas and Nancy Hill of San Antonio, Texas.

After the reception, family and friends gathered at the Reuben Mik:eska's Cyclone Corral in Cyclone, Texas for a barbecue dinner. The party broke up at Seaton (Star Hall) Lodge No. 47 for a dance.

All in all, it was a great tribute to a grand lady we all love.

Texas Czechs are featured in a videotape which is now available for purchase from the Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas.

Filmed in Texas communities in the fall of 1989, the video was produced

by Drahomir Strnadel for Czechos­ lovak Television in Ostrava. Strnadel and two colleages visited various cities and rural settings in the state. The film features interviews with farmers, newspaper owners, and/or editors, and folk dancers, all of whom are striving to keep aspects of their heritage alive.

The film maker sat in on family reunions and sought out both the old and young who speak the ancestral language.

The video has been shown in all parts of Czechoslovakia. CESAT, which contributed financial support to the subject, has been given the rights to copy and distribute the film in the United States. Any profits beyond the cost of reproduction and mailing will go to the organization's general fund, which is established to provide scholarships and grants for higher education.

El Campo Youth Heads For Germany Kimberly Lynn Kácal, age 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Karasek of El Campo, was named as one of the eight students in the state to receive scholarships to visit Germany this summer. Winners of the all-ex­ pense paid four-week study-travel scholarships to the Federal Republic of Germany's State of Lower Saxony were announced at the Texas State German Contest on Saturday, April 13 at the University of Texas.

The recipients were chosen on the basis of performance at contest and completion of a lengthy application which included nine essay questions.

Kim competed in seven events on the state level including prose and poetry interpretation, duet acting, skit, and slide show. She brought home 2 third place honors and 3 fourth place honors as well as the' trip to Germany. Of the

-SPJSTVaccinating your child against measles doesn't guarantee immunity from the disease, which is now on the upswing. Two to five percent of children who are inoculated at the recommended age of 15 months may still be vulnerable. A recent study in

Journal of the American Medical As­ sociation suggests that the reason might be the common cold. Doctors studied 98 children ages 15 to 18 months. Of the 51 who were healthy the day they got the measles vaccine, only one failed to develop the an­ tibodies that protect them from the virus. But of the 47 children who had colds when they were vaccinated, l O did not develop antibodies.

Dieters have long heard that the artificial sweetners in low-cal foods and drinks often make people hungrier.

That may be a myth. An article in April's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition casts doubts on earlier re­ search that seemed to link the sweet­ ners and increased appetite. In a 1986 study, participants who drank a mix of water and aspartame, the most widely used artificial sweetner, reported feel­ ing hungrier than those who drank plain water. But the researchers did not check to see how much food each group of subjects ate after the test. In the study, 42 men of normal weight were given water, lemonade with sugar or lemonade with aspartame. All felt less hungry after drinking, and none ate more than usual in the next hour.

At full volume, some units reached 131 decibels. Warning signs These warning signs let you know when the noise level is hazardous: you must raise your voice to be heard; you cannot hear someone less than two feet away; speech around you sounds muf­ fled after you leave a noisy area; or you have a pain or ringing in your ears after exposure to noise.

If you experience the warning signs of hazardous noise, ask your family doctor about having your hearing tested. Your doctor can suggest ways to deal with unavoidable noise pollu­ tion.

You, as a grandparent, don't want your grandchild to suffer and you would like to give the next generation the benefit of your experience. But though your family may have turned out well, you probably made some mistakes, too, and the temptation now is to try to live vicariously and to tuck in the cor­ rection of those same mistakes in the bringing up of your grandchildren. But they cannot really be applicable, for your child and your daughter's child are products of different parents and . background.

This is the way to get close to your grandchild. It takes patience, imagina­ tion and these simple things to remem­ ber: Listen-s-both to what he says and to what his needs are. Satisfy them if you can but not always with material things. Give him "something to grow on"--food for the spirit as well as the body. Give him surprises, fun and magic.

Be quiet. Don't think you must al­ ways make conversation. Try saying nothing and let your grandchild take the initiative.

Show him how to do things--don't tell him. He prefers actions to words, for action is the. language of childhood.

Never say, "How you've grown!" but prove to him you 've observed that he has by treating him with more respect.

Remember that each time you see him, even the next day, he is a little older than the last time. Don't judge him by his past misdeeds. He has forgotten them and so should you.

When he needs re-proof or punish­ ment, let his parents administer it in their own way.

Under all circumstances be his un­ failing friend, ready to listen to his confidences, always ready to share your knowledge, to give him con­ fidence and courage to grow up. Never become "only a grandmother."

Flag Day, .June 14, 1991--President Donlin has appointed an ad hoc com­ mittee from the Board of Directors of NFCA to study the feasibility of coor­ dinating a special Flag Day ceremony on Ellis Island on Friday, June 14th.

The committee is investigating costs, potential visibility and publicity for the system, and the level of interest within the membership. Presidents and secretaries of each society will receive a survey within the next few days and are asked to respond with their reac­ tions and ideas for this national event.

Random discussion with several society representatives indicates that there is genuine interest in organizing this type of event. With the participa­ tion of members in the nearby states and local area, and other meetings being schedule in conjunction with the June 14 date, at least 100 people would be guaranteed. Systemwide, the NFCA could draw a crowd of 300 to 500 people.

Special discount airline fares, a hotel rate of under $100, and the possibility of chartering buses from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc., may at­ tract a large group to tour Ellis Island, see the room dedicated to the NFCA in recognition of its participation in the renovations, and hold a special ceremony in commemoration of Flag Day, 1991.

People who supplement Medicare coverage with private "medigap" in­ surance will have an easier time pick­ ing a policy next year. Instead of sifting through hundreds of plans, buyers will be able to choose from among nine or 1 O standard ones. The specifics are being drawn up by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, after passage of a federal law last year that called on the group to rescue from chaos the 23 mil­ lion elderly Americans who buy such policies. The confusing array of plans has led people to buy duplicate coverage.

Streamlining may also spur competi­ tion and lower premiums, which now run $40 to $120 a month. The in­ surance commissioners are scheduled to vote on the final plans June 14. One expected provision would allow people who are happy with their present medigap policies to keep them. Other policyholders can get information about switching policies from state in­ surance departments. States will have one year after the commissioners act to comply, but some new policies could appear by this fall. No penalty could be charged for changing policies.

A recently introduced oral vaccine for typhoid, which plagues parts of Africa, Asia and South America, eliminates the nausea, fever and pain­ ful swelling that often follow the usual shot. But doctors have been slow to switch. To call attention to the vac­ cine, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration a year ago, the February 13th issue of the Journal

of the American Medical Association published an article noting the vaccine's minimal side effects and its 51 to 77 percent effectiveness rate --­ the same as that of the injection. The vaccine, Ty21 a, distributed by Berna Products of Coral Gables, Florida, comes as capsules that are taken every other day for seven days before the trip. The Centers for Disease Control International Travelers Hotline at (404) 332-4559 bas information on typhoid-plagued locales.

Because neither vaccine is fully effective, travelers at risk should avoid milk products, water, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Zakladatel, vlastenecký tiskař a nakladatel Jan Otto, od jehož úmrtí v roce 1916 uplyne letos 26. května 75 let, patří svou skvělou českou en­ cyklopedií k těm nejvýznačnějším pracovníkům na roli národa dědičné.

Tento vlastenecse narodil 8. listopadu 1841 v městě Přibyslavi na české straně Českomoravské vysočiny. Toto město bylo založeno v třináctém století Moravanem Přibyslavem z Křižanova, jehož manželka Sibyla původem z ostrova Siciliepřišla do naší staré vlasti ve Fraucimoru (ve družině dvorních dám) Kunhuty, nastávající manželky českého krále Václava I. Přibyslav, královský purkrabí na hradě Veveří u Brna na Moravě, a Sibila měli čtyři dcery: Zdislavu, Eufemii, Elišku a Libuši. Nejstarší Zdislava, vychovaná v Brně v ženském dominikánském klášteře, byla provdána za Havla z rodu Markvardiců, sídlícím na hradě Lemberku u Jablonce v severních Čechách. Paní Zdislava, jež podobně jako sv. Anežka česká žila svatým životem, věnujíc se nemocným a chudým, zemřela dřív než dosáhla 30 let. Doufejme, že bude záhy prohlášena svatou.

Vra.tinese nyní k Přibyslavi, kde 50 metrová (sto čtyřiašedesát stop v naší americké délkové míře vysoká) věž kostela sv. Jana Křtitele vévodíměstu i okolí. Na přibyslavském náměstí je krásná socha sv. Václava z r. 1743, v blízkostiměsta, na tak zvaném Žižkově poli, zemřel 11. října 1424 neporazitelný husitský vojevůdce Jan· Žižka a v nedaleké Borové se narodil 31. října 1821 Karel Havlíček Borovský. Zhora uvedená památná místa vytvořila· na přibyslavsku národně uvědomělé prostředí jež dalo duchovní základ i našemu pozdějšímu vydavateli největší české encyklopedie.

Základní znalosti v knihtiskářství a nakladalství nabyl mladý Jan Otto, když byl zaměstnán několik let jako učetní v knihtiskárně význačného politika, poslance a spoluzakladatele Mladočeské strany Dr. Eduarda Grégra. V roce 1871 převzal J. Otto po svém tchánovi Pospíšilovi v Praze knihtiskárnu. Tento podnik rozšířil v několika letech tak, že se stal největším českým nakladatelstvím, ve kterém vycházelo mnoho publikací a byJy vydávány knihy předních českých spisovatelů. Vydávání velkého slovníku náučného planoval Jan Otto mnoho let jako své vrcholné životní dílo. Za tímto účlelemzískávalvhodné spolupracovníky ze všech odvětví vědeckého, kulturního i hospodářského života. První porady těchto význačných osobností byly zahájeny v roce 1883 kdy vrchní redakce přípravných prací byla svěřena Jakubovi Malému, který měl zkušenosti k tomuto úkolu z prací na

náučném slovníku Františka Ladislava Riegra.

Při této příležitosti zajisté neuškodí pár vět o bohaté činnosti tohoto výz­ namného českého vlasteneckého politika. Právník Prant. Lad. Rieger (1818-1903)spolu s kolegou Augustem Braunerem veřejně požádal již v roce 1844, po přednáškách Františka Palackého a novinovýchčláncíchKarla Havlíčka Borovského, o rovnopráv­ nost českéhojazyka s německouřečí. V prvé poradě českých a německých politiků z území staré vlasti, konané 11. března 1848 ve svatováclavských lázních v Praze přišly Riegrovou zásluhou na přetřes Braunerem for­ mulované požadavky aby Čechy a Morava měly svou vlastní vládní kancelář a svůj vlastní parlament, který by se střídavě scházelv Praze a v Brně. Na druhé poradě 29. března ve stejném místě Němci z Čech už nebyli přítomni a tak se převážně jednalo o národních otázkách. Další významné události pak rychlepokračovaly, jedna za druhou. Ve Vídni došlo k povstání, v Praze se konal sjezd Slovanů z rakouského císařstvípři kterém došlo k nezdarnému pokusu o revoluci, rakouský parlament k vůli dalším nepokojům ve Vídni přesídlil na Moravu do Kroměříže (listopad 1948 do 7. března 1949), vojenská klika ve Vídni se zmocnila vlády, sněm v Kroměříži byl rozpuštěn a na trůn byl dosazen František Josef II. Když Rakousko pak prohrálo válku s Pruskem tak v roce 1867 vznikl t. zv. dualismus, který v Předlitavsku dal moc Němcům a v Zalitavsku Maďarům. Češi protestovali chtějíc aby Cislajtalie uznala historická práva české koruny. Ohromné a vytrvalé národní manifestace ukazovaly silnou vůli. národa. Z jara r. 1867 na národopisné výstavě v Moskvě vůdcové českého poselství Palacký a Riegerdali smělývýraz českýmsnahám protiněmeckým. V květnu r. 1868 při velkolepé slavnosti položení základního kamene k Národnímu divadlu v Praze ohnivé projevy Palackého, Riegra, Sladkovského, Hurbana a dalších řečníků rozněcovaly národ, stejně jako hromadná pouť k Husově hranici do Kostnice. Podobný účinek měly též památné tábory lidu pořádané na husitský způsob, z nichž tábor na hoře Řípu měl víc jak 30,000 účastníků. Na nich se hlasitě ozýval duch odporu proti vyrovnání s Maďary a proti potlačování ostatních národů habsburského imperia. V nastalém pronásledování (v Praze bylo tehdy vyhlášeno stanné právo) i neodsouzení se hlásili houfně do vězení, chtíc trpět pro spravedlivouvěc. Fr. Lad. Rieger, po Palackém politický vůdce národa, sformuloval tehdy se členy šlechty st át opr ávnf deklaraci, která neuznávala dualismu. František Ladislav Rieger byl v roce 1869 na oficiální návštěvě u Napoleona III a později, když Francie byla v roce 1870 poražena BismarckovýmPruskem, byl to opět Rieger, který s dalšími českými předáky protestoval, že Bismarck od­ cizil poražené Francii Alsasko.

Palackým byli vedoucí strany

14/VĚSTNÍK-8. května 1991 Staročechů; Karel Sladkovský a Josef Václav Frič představovali vedení strany Mladočechů. Jak k tomuto rozdělení došlo není účelem tohoto článku.

Vraťme se nyní k Janu Ottovi a k přípravám jeho nepřekonatelné en­ cyklopedie. Jakub Malý, v tomto článku již zmíněný vrchní redaktor přípravných prací, vypracoval návrh, dle kterého se připravované dílo mělo nazývat "Národní encyklopedie česká." Jakub Malý však zemřel v březnu 1885 a po jeho smrti se hlavní redakce ujal tehdejší pětatřicetiletý profesor Tomáš Masaryk (1850-1937), pozdější první president Ceskoslovenské republiky. Když sociolog Masaryk nadále odmítal v časopisu Athenaeum pravost rukopisů Zelenohorského a Královédvorského, rozrostl se spor do té míry, že Masaryk byl nucen se vzdát vrchní redakce připravované encyklopedie. To učnil přípisem z 27. února 1887, necelý rok před vydáním prvních stránek Ottova náučného slovníku. Nová redakce, po , úspěšném jedenání s vládním radou Tomkem z filosofické fakulty, byla složena tak, že za universitu byli vysláni do vrcholné redakce profesoři Studnička, Čelakovský a Maixner; techniku v redakci representovali pro­ fesoři Feistmentel a Šolín a za theologický obor byli tam posláni doktoři Borový a Krásl. Ředitelem redakční kanceláře byl zvolen spisovatel a poslanec Josef Kořán, který byl rovněž spoluzakladatel a stálý spolupracovník tehdejšího pražského "Hlasu národa." Redakce takto složená záhy získala mnoho nadšených spolupracovníků, jejichž počet dosáhl jedenácti set během následujících 20 let. Za název této nové encyklopedie byl zvolen "Ottův slovník náučný," čímž byla přiznána velká zásluha jeho původnímu .iniciátorovi a vydavateli Janu Ottovi.

První sešit Ottova slovníku vyšel před stotřemi lety, 22. ledna 1888.

(Tato encyklopedie vycházela nejdříve v sešitech, později knižně.) Od zmíněného data vycházel slovník v bez­ vadné úpravě, vzorně tištěný 20 let na křídovém papíře až do roku 1908. · Během této doby mnozí spolupracovníci zemřeli nebo odstoupili a na jejich místa nastoupili noví, stejně nadšení a obětaví pracovníci na tomto vznešeném společném dílu.

Prvním vrchním redaktorem během vydávání Ottova slovníku byl, jak již zmíněno, poslanec Josef Kořán, jehož vystřídal dr. profesor R. Dvořák, původem z jižních Čech. Dvořáka pak vystřídal spisovatel Primus Sobotka. · Ottova jedinečná encyklopedie se může ještě dnes měřit svým obsahem a technickým provedením s největšími moderními naučnými slovm1cy všech kulturně vyspělých národů. Tato en­ cyklopedie má 28 dílů o 30,000 stranách lexikonového formátu, 5,067 původních vyobrazení, 479 zvláštních příloh a na 150,000 článků. V roce 1909 byla encyklopedie doplněna věcnými dodatky.

Její zakladatel, vlastenecký tiskař a nakladatel Jan Otto se bohužel nedočkal vzniku československé republiky, jelikož zemřel 26. května 1916 v Praze. Ku konci jeho plodného vlasteneckého působení se mu dostalo mnoha vyznamenání a zastával též řadu čestných úřadů i funkcí ve veřejném životě. Po jeho úmrti řídil vydavatelskou společnost jeho zeť K'B. Mádl ještě dalších 20 let. V těchto letech vyšlo jak několik důležitých doplňků vlastní encyklopedie, tak "Ottův malý slovník naučný" a "Ottův kapesní slovník."

V březnu roku 1929 začal vycházet "Ottův slovník naučný nové doby" v sešitovém vydání. I to je velmi hodnotné dílo širokého rozsahu, na jehož sestavení se podíleli vesměs noví již spolupracovníci mladší generace jak ze staré vlasti tak i z několika evropských zemí a ze zámoří. Škoda jen, že druhá světová válka přerušila vydávání tohoto díla, které bylo zastaveno 23. května 1943, zrovna před dokončením hesla "Užok". Vydávání Ottova slovníku náučného nové doby řídil universitní profesor Bohumil Němec, význačný vědec a kulturní pracovník ve staré vlasti.

Mimochodem, profesor Němec byl v roce 1935, mimo dr. Eduarda Beneše, kandidát na úřad presidenta Československé republiky.

V roce 1936 převzala vydavatelskou činnost Ottova nakladatelství společnost Novina. Je pozoruhodné co tato nová encyklopedie nazvaná Ottův slovník náučný nové doby vycházela -­ od prvního sešitu v roce 1929 až do sešitu číslo 267 v roce 1943 -- byla její cena pouhých 10 korun za jeden sešitový výtisk! Tu zajisté mi dá každý z čtenářů za pravdu, řeknu-li, že zhora uvedený fakt dokazuje stabilitu naší československé měny za první republiky. (Jelikož v prvních válečných letech "protektorátní" koruna byla na rozkaz okupantů uměle držena blízko hodnoty koruny předválečné, tak ceny sešitů Ottova náučného 'slovníku nové doby zůstaly nezměněny až do zrušení tohoto díla v květnu roku 1943. Za nacistické okupace bylo však vydávání této sešitové encyklopedie víc a více obtížnější, poněvadž řada spolupracovníků na tomto projektu byla uvězněna a část jich popravena.

Závěrem tohoto článku sepsaného k pětasedumdesátém výročí smrti Jana Otty, zakladatele, tiskaře a nakladatele slavné české encyklopedie zvané Ottův slovník náučný, s podtitulem Il­ lustrovaná encyklopedie obecných vědomostí, zopakujme si tato fakta: Dlouho připravovaný Ottův slovník náučný začal vycházet tiskem před sto třemi roky, 22. května 1888. Jeho vznik byl velikou kulturně vědeckou událostí, která zařadila český národ mezi nejvyspělejší evropské národy.

Toto náročné dílo na kterém se podíle­ ly stovky významných českých učenců, národohospodářů, dějepisců, spisovatelů i umělců, z druhé poloviny min. století až do let čtyřicatých našeho století, bylo plánováno, připravováno

Moji rodiče měli v naší velké domácí knihovně všech 28 knižních dílů této slavné encyklopedie, v níž už jako gymnasijní studentík jsem často vydržel "ležet" celé hodiny.

Tu v Houstonu se nachází Ottův naučný slovník na čtvrtém poschodí nového křídla knihovny University Houston; ve stejném oddělení je i čtyřdílný Masarykův slovník. V téhle universitní knihovně bohužel není Naučný slovník Frant. Lad. Riegra.

Lekce Třináctá Lesson No. 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable:- PRÁ-ce, SKÁ­ kat, ŠKO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRÁ-co-V Á-ti, VZDĚ-la-VÁ­ tí, ZA-palo-V Á-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word follow­ ing, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po válce (poválce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant, v, z, s, k- it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k vám kvám- (not ke vám): V Novém Yorku (not ve Novém Yorku).

5. Before other groups of con­ sonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE středu, KE mně, SE mnou, ZE školy.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vídni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE země. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cenný). A double vv or double kk are not pronounceable.

However, in a word like nejjemnější, · the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable.
