Family Fun And Important SPJST Dates

Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard Dear Members: April 1991 has just passed into his­ tory and, again, it is time for another meeting. The May meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on Sunday, the 5th at 2:00 p.m, and will convene in the first floor room at 106 Leveridge in the lodge building. Any business needing immediate attention will be allowed on the agenda. There will be some special reports on events which took place since the last meet­ ing.

Theme of the day for Sunday, May 5th will be Mother's Day with special door prizes for mothers.

A fraternal hour is scheduled to con­ vene when the business meeting ad­ journs. It will begin with the regular light buffet luncheon and will be fol­ lowed by an open period whereby those persons who remembered to bring some sort of game to play may do so.

The April 7th meeting convened on time with a quorum present. All reports were accepted as given. There were several motions made and passed, with one being the prizes to be given for both Mother's Day and Father's Day. The meeting lasted ap­ proximately 48 minutes.

Although this writer does not have the names of all who donated food and other items for the buffet luncheon, he wishes to thank one and all for their extra effort to make things a success.

On another subject: Those members of our local lodge who are due to receive 50-year membership pins will be receiving a letter from FAC A.J. "Tony" Kelner advising you of the event and inviting you to our meetings.

The presentation of these pins will be made in the July monthly meeting. The officers of the lodge wish to extend an invitation to all who are due to receive these pins even if they may be con­ fined to a wheelchair, use walkers or other support devices. Access to the meeting room is at street level and the only obstacle to contend with is a door threshold which most persons go through everyday. So, with this in mind, we urge all of you, who can, to make plans to attend the meeting to receive your pins. It is planned to have someone from the Supreme Lodge to make the presentations.

Lodge No. 35, Elk The meeting was brought to order by President Henry Breitkreutz, Sr. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jana Breitkreutz.

Visitors were Linda Bates and Sandy Wooten.

Minutes were read by Verna Pavelka and they were approved. She also gave the treasurer's report which was also approved.

Youth Leader Louise Burney gave her report. The youth club discussed their Mother's Day activities, queen and king prospects and their duke and duchess to go along with them for YAD on June 23rd at Cottonwood, also arts· and crafts that could be done and that Sister Burney would like good participation for YAD. She said Dis­ trict III meeting would be held April 14 at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth; on April 21, the youth club will have a skating party and work on Mother's Day projects and camp would be this summer from July 15th through July 18th; a cake walk to be held April 20th. Following the meeting, the youth will have a kite-flying contest, with prizes. We were also planning a Six­ Flags' trip possibly in June.

Birthdays for April are Stefanee Cal­ laway, Robin Breitkreutz, Lindsey Berry and Verna Pavelka.

New youth club members are Allison Corp, Lindsey Berry and Deanna Salazar. We are happy to have them.

Sunshine Committee reported that Willie Adamek was home and doing fine after surgery, and Adolph (Muscle) Pavelka was also doing fine since his surgery.

SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar had a delicious noon meal and an auction for their 1991fund-raiser for their lodge.

They were very fortunate to have a nice crowd after an all-day rain on Saturday and, again, early Sunday morning but the rains quit and the water drained and the people came. All of the officers had smiles on their faces because their annual event was not rained out. They wish to thank the members, friends and SPJST sup­ porters for making our day a success.

Lodge No. 81, Needville

The April meeting of Lodge No. 81 was held on Sunday, April 21, 1991 at the hall in Needville. Thirty-eight members and guests were present to enjoy a delicious roast beef dinner at noon. The succulent roast and gravy, prepared by Benita Walzel, was ac­ companied by a variety of tasty vegetables and mouth-watering des­ serts prepared by the sisters of our lodge. Sincere thanks to all who brought the food. Our meals, preced­ ing the business meetings, are always a time of good fellowship visiting with members and guests.

We had no one on the sick list. Con­ valescent members are Kathleen Gajevsky and Mary Werner. It was good to see Mary Matcek présent, after a recent illness.

There was no old business to finish or new business to discuss.

The May meeting will be held on Sunday, May 19, 1991 beginning with dinner at 12:00 noon followed by the business meeting at 1 :00 p.m. Please bring a vegetable, salad and/or dessert.

The Needville area, like others, has recently had more than its share of rain. Row crops are not doing well in some places, and much planting of cot­ ton still remains to be done. May will be a busy month in gardens and fields.

Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Members: President Olson welcomed Milton Spaniel, a guest, to our meeting last Monday. Afterward, the following items were discussed. Lodge 84 ap­ proved the project, sponsored by the SPJST Supreme Lodge and will accept crotches, canes, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. We ask for donations of these items; we will store them and loan . them to anyone in need. President Olson (at 223-1801) will accept calls, if you wish to donate or ask about items needed for this fraternal project.

Next, discussion was held about our parking lot garage sale. If you have items you wish to donate for this lodge fund-raiser, please call Wanda Petr at 352-4397 or Evelyn Salac at 352-5295 fór any questions regarding their project, but items donated to the sale need to be brought by our lodge by Wednesday, May 1st to be labeled and priced: Of course, donations will be welcomed any time during the sale Thursday, May 2nd and Friday, May 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on our parking lot facing Gaston Avenue.

Also, if you have items you wish to sell, space can be rented to place your items on. Workers are needed; call the numbers listed if you are available·to work on this project.

The membership congratulates Sister Betty Olson, our lodge president, and Brother C.J. Olson on thier 40th an­ niversary. We wish- you many more years of happiness together.

Her sister and husband also came here at the same time. Later she fell in love with her brother-in-law's brother Frank and married him when she was 16 years old. Frank, her hus­ band, was a chef by trade so he be­ came the chef for Brazos Hotel with Ida helping him. They worked together for many years and finally went to the Houston Country Club as their chef.

During all these hard times and long hours she had two sons, Frank, Jr. and Ernest J., both of her treasured boys preceded her in death and also her hus­ band, Frank. She has many relatives and friends, who, through their faith, have helped her through all these hard times. She's been a dear mother-in-law to me. God bless you!

THAT'S INCREDIBLE! The 104-year-old lady, Emma Orsak, is the oldest person residing at a Rosenberg, Texas nursing home and sharing this mile· stone is her nephew, Jerry Ermis and his wife, Willie Mae, and SPJST Dis­ trict V Director Louis Hanus.

Lodge No.. 88, Houston News On April 8, 1991 we had our month­ ly meeting. President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. with Darlene and Marlene Migl and Michelle Linney presenting the flags after which the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The deceased members since our last meeting were Rose Jungbauer, Jo Ann Theiss and Elmer D. Evetts. This is al­ ways a sad time for some of our mem­ bers, and we expressed our sympathy by a minute of silence.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes, which were accepted.

Mildred also read the correspondence, a letter from the family of Rose Jungbauer and a very nice letter from President Dressler and his wife, Vicki, from the Pasadena Lodge No. 172 thanking Lodge 88 for making a change .ín our dance scheduled for their November Fest. They have a polka fest and we bad a polka band scheduled, so Harley Cox changed our dance to a Big Name Band. I do like harmony like that, which is for the benefit of everyone. Personally - I al­ ways have a vision of 8 horses hitched to a wagon - if they all pull the same direction, it's fine, but when a few pull in opposite direction, "What a Mess That Can Be," and this holds so true to everything, so leťs pull together and be successful.

Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis went by to see his aunt, Mrs. Emma Orsak, who is 104 years and in a nursing home in Rosenberg. It's fantastic how alert she is.

Financial Secretary-Treasurer Shir­ ley Stonaker gave her report, which was very good and now all of us know what's going on, and how our money is spent. Remember, this lodge belongs to the members, so let's keep progressing. · FAC Homer Alexander gave a very good report on the collection of eye glasses. Mr. Bill Souchek collected some for Homer. We are also so happy that Homer is looking into the CPR courses. This course will cost $18.00 - 2 to 4 hour lessons. I often think how terrible one must feel if someone is in need ánd you don't know what to do.

Let's take the course -- it may save someone's life!

Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave a good and enthusiastic speech about the

youth. The youth will write about all their activities in the youth section.

Read it because we have some good journalists. Barbara thanked Ellen Miculka, Tina Ondracek, Mike Trefell, Helen Kubicek and maybe others be­ cause I didn't get all the names.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox gave a good report; I was so happy about the profit made in March. On April 27 Jack Melick from Dallas (the piano man) will play at Lodge 88. The May dances have not gotten into the Vestnik, so as soon as I get them I'll write about them.

Al Pierson will play on February 1, 1992 and possibly several more times during 1992.

Assistant Roy Stonaker announced the Blue Room Party on April 28 and also other activities.

President Lowrina Lindemann gave her report on the drawings for the Birthday Club. We would appreciate all the help we can get, also for the pastry booth. Lillie Spies will be so

grateful for the delicious cakes, pies, cookies and kolaches, Men's Club President Ed Miculka gave an interesting report about the club. It started 8 years ago and now has a membership of 46 men. They meet every first Tuesday of the month.

They have a breakfast meeting and a game of bridge afterwards. Their regular workday is on the third Wed­ nesday of each month. They keep the yard, flower beds, parking lot and building clean inside and outside. Ed said: "We scrub, paint, mow, repair tables, chairs, replace ceiling tile, repair roof, leaks in the storage build­ ing, carpenter work, electrical work and clean garbage cans. We had 98 work details the past year." They have from 12 to 30 men for their workdays 100 hours a year. He mentioned no names. He said they had quite an ex­ perience recently at one of our work details (a man got stuck in a plastic can.) He said they cut him out.

Anyway we are ~~ thankful for these men. · Tom Marsh gave the Auditing Com­ mittee report and found the books in order.

Assistant Board Chairman A.J. Stayton gave a report on their work, since Chairman Karl Lindemann was absent. A.J. stated the gazebo was painted while after the renovation. The beautiful concrete tables were repaired after they were vandalized. (Sad.) Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupťs boys -- Lee, Karl and Paul went to the Na­ tional ChampionshipTournament for 2 degrees -- competition of the De Molays. Lee received first place as Marshall. Then they went to New Or­ leans to the International Champion­ ship and Karl and Paul received first place Preceptor Chore. The board from Lodge 88 sponsored them. We are real proud of these boys.

Chairman Josephine Pflughaupt of the Scholarship Fund stated that they bad three applicants and all were qualified.. They are Damian Abreo, Shannon Devin and Lisa Kelly. Since it was quite a task to make the right choice, the membership decided to give each one a scholarship. This was a wise decision.

Dramatic Club President Bill Malina is calling a meeting for May 20 for plans to be made for September 29 which is the THE DAY. Gene Barcak announced that the Choral Group will go to the Czech Fest in Rosenberg on May 4th. He en­ couraged all singers to come to re­ hearsal.

Mary Kosut gave the report on hours spent on volunteer work by the mem­ bers. She does a beautiful job. It's quite a task.

I was told that Joe Miksch and Ed Miculka won third place in the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament held at Taylor in 1991.

Mr. Souchekannounced that he bas a Czech class of 64 people. He loves this work and may he be with us a long time. (Don't retire.)

District V Director Louis Hanus gave a nice informative talk about the im­ portance of the 34 sales repre­ sentatives and urged us to sell as much as we can. Helen, our state field repre­ sentative, also gave a good talk about insurance. She is doing a greatjob. If we need advice, she never is too busy and is right there.

Our known sick are Harry Rice, who had shoulder surgery April 9th. He is at home, now. Arnold Cmajdalka also has been in the hospital for a week with bronchitis and then the doctor discovered a heart condition,which re­ quires open-heart surgery and he is scheduled for April 24th. You'11 be

Lodge No. 139, Danbury The April 1 Oth meeting of Danbury Lodge No. 139 was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak.

Other officers gave their reports and correspondence was read. Helen Filipp gave her final report as financial secretary because our lodge will now be on direct billing. Sister Helen thanked our lodge for the cooperation she received from lodge members during her long tenure as financial secretary.

It was announced the lodge has five new members.

We offer condolences to the family of Kervin Giese, of West Columbia, who passed away recently.

Members voted to make a $100.00 donation to the Danbury Little League; also, it was decided to buy an ad in the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary calendar. The ad will state the times and dates of each meetIng throughout the year.

Lodge No. 142, . Houston On Sunday, April 14, 1991 President Dennis Hermis called our regular monthly meeting to order. We had 40 members and 4 guests present who stood to recite the Pledge of Al­ legiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers, by Secretary Alice Jochen, revealed that all officers were present, except our Guide Frank Tumis.

Brother Frank Tumis and Sister Dorothy Tumis had gone on a vacation trip to Las Vegas. We are anxious to have them come back and hope their pockets will be fulll Then the secretary read the minutes from the previous meeting, which were approved after a correction.

Financial secretary and treasurer' s reports were given by Rosie Tumis.

Board of trustees and bar reports were given by Martin Kieschnick.

Youth club report was given by Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. The. youth will have a garage sale on April 27th at our Lodge No. 142. Thanks to Jo Buri for the plant donation.

Visitors recognized were Jo Ann Buri, Josephine Buri, Arris Sharp, Joe Gambii, and we had a special little guest who was at our meeting. She was Kourtney LeShea Lawhorn, daughter

of Mr. and Mrs. Lawhorn. The mother is the former Betty Stein. Kourtney LeShea was born on Baster Sunday, March 31, 1991, weighing 6. pounds and 12 ounces. What a nice Baster present!

June 23rd is District V YAD at Lodge No. 88. All of you are urged to come out.

New members for the month are Emelia and Dan Wiley; second sales representative is Rosie Tumis with two new members.

Birthday celebrants for April are Rita Hermis (April 20) and Adela Stein (April 24).

News From Lodge No. 180, Burleson

Our monthly meeting opened with President Louis Grochoske presiding.

A moment of silence was held for our departed members and friends, espe­ cially for the father of our member, Randy Payne.

A card of thanks was received from the Burleson Child Abuse Program for a donation of $500. A card of thanks was also received from Randy Payne family.

All plumbing has been repaired and a new edging was installed on the dance floor.

Our dances have been well-attended all Saturdays.

After the meeting, a delicious meat was enjoyed by everyone attending .

FAC J.C. Johnson and Bill Hutka spoke to the Academy High School su­ perintendent about our lodge making available three scholarships. Members decided to give $750.00, $600.00 and $500.00 scholarships to three worthy students with a few guidelines set down by the committee. .

Supreme Lodge Attorney Sidney Kacir will be a guest speaker at our May 8th meeting; if you have any questions about "Living Wills" or any other legal business, be at our next meeting on May 8th at 7:30 p.m.

FAC J.C. Johnson appointed Libbie Bartek and Louis Driska to call mem­ bers and try to get more members to attend our lodge meetings; J.C. will appoint two persons at all meetings and, at the end of the year, a prize will be given to the member who gets the most members to attend.

An ice cream social was planned for April 29th at 7:00 p.m.

Twenty-seven members and officers were present.

Members discussed and then donated $500.00 to the Academy-Little River Little League. This donation.and three scholarships will be donated from the Game Night Fund.

President Beck called a work night for Friday, April 19th to do some cleanup and repair at the lodge. A trench was dug, an electric wire to the lodge was installed underground be­ cause it seemed as if the garbage truck always hooked the line and tore it down. This was accomplished by our able electrician, Bobby Fritz, and his helpers, namely, Christi Fritz and Otis Beck. Bars and hooks were put up

across the dance floor on the frame of the ceiling for the bands' cords; these things were installed by Otis and Rich Beck, and Jim McNeil. Also all broken tiles were replaced by Louis Driska and J.C. Johnson. Libbie Bartek and Teresa Baca did a super job cleaning the kitchen. Helen Bland, Kathy Fritz, Mary Ann Summers, Barbara Wright, Linda Johnson and I washed walls and were surprised how clean the walls looked!

A big THANK YOU for all the work you did and we enjoyed a barbecue supper, also three youth club members, besides Christi Fritz, helped cleanup-­ those being Regina and Ranelle Wright and Maria. (I don't know Maria's last name, but the lodge ap­ preciates you.)

Also a thank you to Louis Driska for finding a place to get table glides that makes it good to have helping mem­ bers which makes a president's job easier. Helen Bland and Otis Beck work good together keeping our lodge in good repairs.

A meal of fajitas was served and everyone enjoyed the same.

A special meeting was held about the dance floor and members approved a bid for the floor, President Beck looked into all "ins and outs" of the bids and presented his findings to the members; the dance floor will be replaced June 5th through June 17th Buddy Siegel and friends attending Lodge No. 172 social/dinner and dance '· and there will be no dance on June 8th on April 14th.

We were to meet at the lodge in the evening and afterwards go out to eat.

We were to see "To The Limit."

The meeting adjourned and we all helped in our drawing project and cake sales at our adult lodge meeting, which was heldfollowing our youth meeting.

As always, the youth would like to thank all members and guests who donate to their games and cake sales.

The 3-day celebration of the grand opening of the Sokol Activity Center was a great success and the weather cooperated. The dinner (Sunday) was delicious and the program was wonderful. I enjoyed browsing through the museum. It was good to see many friends, whom we have not seen in many years. Polka Festival is just around the comer. I am sure there will be a lot of good entertainment and plenty to eat and see.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the dear mothers, maminky, mamas, moms. Those of you who have a mother are very fortunate. Some of us have not had one for many years and they are truly missed: Give your mother a big hug and tell her that you love her.

Mr. Vrzalík was married to Sophie Pustejovsky in Stamford, Texas in November 1939. He was engaged in farming all his life and worked at the Kaufman Co-op Gin for many years.

He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and of SPJST Lodge No. 110 in Kaufman.

Brother Vrzalík was preceded in death by his wife, Sophie; three brothers, Raymond, Ed and Adolph, also his parents.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Raymond Patak of Ennis; sons, John Vrzalík of San Antonio and Frankie Vrzalík of Kaufman; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; also 3 sisters, Louise Vlacilek of Wilmer, Julia Pus­ tejovsky of Stamford, Frances Hetmer of Kaufman, plus nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of brother JOHNNY J. LUKSA,

49, of Caldwell, Texas, who died Saturday, March 16, 1991 in a Hous­ ton hospital after a brief illness.

Brother Luksa was born November 21, 1941, in the Deanville community, to Fannie Vlasta Kovar Luska and the late Adolph Paul Luksa. He obtained his education at the San Antonio Prairie, Deanville and Caldwell schools; then chose farming and ranch­ ing as his lifelong occupation. He was employed by the Caldwell Livestock Commission Company and the Bode Livestock Commission Company. He was later employed by Clint Luksa Mobile Homes. He worked hard all his life. His hobbies included playing dominoes and visiting with family and friends.

He was also a member of Hermann Sons Lodge No. 301 in Deanville.

Brother Luksa married Norma Lee Barnett on October 22, 1961. Two children were born of this marriage, Timmy Luksa and Debbie Talley. He was married to Delores Zagabay

Boedeker and one child was born of this marriage, Crystal Cox. He was preceded in death by his father, Adolph Paul Luksa and one brother and sister-in-law, A.J. and Charlotte Luksa.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Fannie V. Luksa of Deanville; one son, Timmy Luksa of Caldwell; two daughters, Debbie Talley of Rockdale and Crystal Cox of Caldwell. Other survivors include his wife, Eva Johnson of Deanville; one step­ daughter, Kelley Johnson, two step­ sons, Wade and Jimmy Johnson, all of Deanville; one brother and sister-in­ law, Clint J. and Delores Faye_ Luksa; two nephews, one niece and two step­ nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 18 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, with the Reverend Henry Beseda officiating.

Interment followed in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery near Caldwell.

Pallbearers were Billy Watson, Ray Zagabay, Ray Sharper, Otto Hibbe, Billy Barnett and Richard Zagabay.

We, the · undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother LOUIS SCHOENEMAN,

who died Thursday, February 21, 1991 at his home after a lengthy ill­ ness.

Mr. Schoeneman was born in Snook on January 31, 1927 and was the son of Vlasta Mais Schoeneman and the late Frank Schoeneman. He was a dairy farmer for 30 years. He and Mary Bess Poehl were married on July 25, 1951 in Houston. He served in the United States Marine Corps from Sep­ tember 18, 1946 to August 12, 1948.

He received an honorable discharge as a corporal.

Mr. Schoeneman was a member of the Burleson County Co-op for 20 years and served as president during most of this time. He was a very hard worker and loved working with his cattle at the dairy. He also enjoyed deer hunting. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Caldwell.

Mr. Schoeneman is survived by his wife, Mary Bess Schoeneman of the Second Creek community; one son,

Steve Schoeneman; one daughter, Wanda Campise; two brothers, Milton Schoeneman and David Schoeneman; two sisters, Joyce Miller and Mavis Earls. He is also survived by his mother, Vlasta Schoeneman of Cooks Point and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Louis Schoeneman were held Saturday, February 23, from the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

The Rev. Phil Lovelace officiated.

Burial followed in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

A former Bell County residert, he was born in Temple to Paul and Rosie Macek. Brother Macek began work with the Texas Highway Department on March 13, 1928 in San Angelo as a laborer. He was later made crew foreman and traveled over a large area shooting "road oil" as it was called at that time. In 1954, he was promoted to maintenance formen in Eden.

In 1971, Brother Macek was among the 25 foremen nominated throughout the state for the coveted Lady Bird Johnson Beautification Award. Safety for his men was a prime objective and as a qualified instructor, he taught first-aid. After 44 years and 13 days of state service, he retired and later moved back to San Angelo.

Surviving him are his wife, Mildred Macek of San Angelo; his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bob Holliday of Austin; Christa of College Station and Butch of Austin; his stepson and wife, Bill and Shirley Jinkins and their son, Brandon of Arlington; his seven sisters, Milady Sebesta and Olga Prasek, both of Crosby, Bessie Smith and Lillie Simcik, both of Taylor, Evelyn Kolinek of Georgetown, Fran­ ces Denton of Pearland and Amelia Tofte of Pasadena; his special sister­ in-law, Elsie Jez of · Taylor and numerous nieces and nephews.

Brother Macek was a member of the Wall Brethem Church and SPJST Lodge No. 47 in Seaton for many years.

Brother Scasta had been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 94, Wheelock since 1934. During this interval, he served faithfully in various offices of the SPJST. Brother Scasta was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Blazek Scasta, in 1978. .

She worked in Central Services at Scott and White Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She was a member of our lodge for almost 62 years. She was a Catholic.

Home No. I. His parents were born in Germany, and Edward was born in the New Bum area on August 17, 1899.

Later he was raised and farmed, too, in the Detwald area. · He has one daughter, Mrs. Viola Kunze of Austin and one son, Melvin Weise of Thorndale, plus a daughter­ in-law, Laverne Weise of Thorndale; also eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Mr. Weise came to live at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I on Novem­ ber 15, 1990. He is a member of St. John' s Lutheran Church in Thorndale.

S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No.I Spring Festival The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home held their Annual Spring Festival during Easter week.

Administrator Woody Richards wel­ comed the guests and thanked them for coming, then he emceed the program.

Rev. Dan Hitt gave a short devotion on Easter.

As in past years, the grandchildren of staff members and students from Seventh Street Day Care Center modeled their new Easter attires to the delight of the residents.

Then Milton Blomquist and Leona Stalmach sang some Easter duets. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Stalmach followed by some special Easter songs, too.

The highlight of the day was the traditional crowing of a king and queen of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I voted by the residents. Milton Blom­ quist conducted the coronation ceremony.

The selected queen was Helen Wilde of Thrall, Texas, who was born in Wil­ liamson County on October 12, 1896.

She and her husband farmed all their lifes in the Thrall area. Mrs. WH.de has one daughter, Mrs. Lorene Zieschang

ln 1974 Raymond Skrabanek was elected liaison Councilman over Parks and Recreation and served in that capacity until 1988, Raymond Skrabanek has contributed a tremendous amount ~f time and effort for advancement and bettennent of recreation in Jacinto City.

He has always participated in and contributed to the goals of making our city and co11V11unity a better place 1lo live. He spent many hours working with a corrmittee to complete the first history book of ~acinto City.

In addition to the many hours Raymond Skrabanek spent serving as liaison Councilman of Parks and Recreation, he has always taken an active role in Boy Scouts of America and has spent many hours researching his "Czech" Heritage and has been honored by serving as a President of the "Czech Heritage Society of Texas".

NOW THEREFORE, it is hereby resolved by the City Council of Jacinto City and accordingly proclaimed by the Mayor that in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to our Parks and Recreation Department that the girls softball field shall officially be named "Raymond Skrabanek Field" The City Secretary is hereby directed to publish and distribute this proclamation honoring Raymond Skrabanek in the manner prescribed by law so that all our citizens and the &eneral public is made aware of the outstandina service Raymond Skrabanek has unselfishly aiven to our youth and

Když jsem byl vloni na prázdninách u strýčka, io mne vzal sebou do polí a já se nemohl vynadiviti co tam všechno 'roste! ''Tak teď už vím kde rostou zápalky, tadyhle to pole je jich plno," volám.

"Ne, Vašíčku, tohleto nejsou sirky, to je strniště -- tady rostlo obilí --" poučoval mne strýc.

Tamhle v ohradách se proháněli koně a malé hříbátko vesele běhalo sebou. Jeden kůň se docela obrátil na záda vzhůru nohama a škrábal sena zádech. Vesele se při tom řehtal.

Když jsme přicházeli k chlévům kde byly krávy, tu se hlouček kocourů rozletěl na všechny strany.

Strýček ukazoval na jednoho rezavého, kulhavého kocoura, jemuž scházelo ucho a kus ocasu, a povídal: "Tohle je Tygr, rváč -- postrach všech koček a jiných zvířat -- všechny mají před ním "respekt" -- ten chodí i do polí na lovy a porve se kolikrát i s polními zvířaty. Jednou zaútočil i na ježka, ale to se spálil na ostsrých jeho štětinách! -Vcházeli jsme do velkého chléva, a to jsem se podivil jak tam bylo čisto. -­ Nahlédl jsem do jedné stáje a ulekl jsem se když se ozvalo za dveřmi "bééé" -- mladý rohatý býček pohlížel udiveně na mne. Nevím, kdo se divil více!

"Vidíš, tady to telátko dnes se právě narodilo," ukazoval mně strýc na malé zvířátko, které se zdálo býti jen o něco větší nežli koza. Marně se pokoušelo udržeti na všech čtyřech nohou -­ klouzalo mu to! Kravička-- maminka, která se snažila ho podepřeti, bučela patrně radostí a všichni se těšili.

Jakoby se kráva chlubila, "heleďte se -- tohleto je moje dítě -- jak je hezké a jak se má k světu, třebaže je celé uslin­ tané." Také jsem viděl jak se dojily krávy' -- to bylo zajímavé! -- To jsem

--Zkusila jsem dneska mnoho. Smrt pobízela k chůzi..ale t,na nejevila velké chuti vozit mě. Náhle zafuněla, zdvihla jsem mohla míti z toho. Hleďte, co mi hlavu a dala se do prudkého běhu k udělali, jak mne celou oškubali.

Ale housata se seběhla okolo ní, blízkému houští. Jásala jseni, jak se krásně vezu, a seskočit mě ani přitulila se k jejím oškubaným křídlům nenapadlo. Vtom se Katy se mnou a nejstarší zakejhalo: --Pro nás jste vždy nejkrásnější, vřítila do houští. Bylo zle. Chytla jsem se pevně krávy a čekala, jak se mnou máte srdce nejštědřejší!

Staré huse Kejhalce bylo náhle tak osud naloží. Smrkové větve bily mě do očí a do rukou. Náhle jsem se octla na sladce, že rázem zapomněla, co cestou zemi.

Katy uháněla dále.

S zakusila. Její děti ji nezapřely a nestyděly se za ni. poskrábaným obličejem, zdrásanýma A když se večer kolébala se svými rukama dlouho jsem seděla. Náhle za mnou něco zafunělo -- byla to Katy. dětmi po návsi k domovu, šla hrdě a Klidná, s dobrýma očima, šla svým pyšně, jako by ií patřil celý svět. pomalým, volným krokem a u mne se zastavila. Měla jsem ostré slovo na jazyku, ale když jsem jí pohlédla do velkých očí, zlost mě přešla. Vyšla ven Od rána na to myslím; je mi ohavně, musím to říci. Jen jsem vyšla z a já za ní.

Před houštinou se zastavila a ohlédla domova, sklouzly mi na schodech s se na mne. Čekala pokárání? Pohladila ošklivostí oči. Čimču, jak se ji posmívá: Jaké je to osklivé slovo -- ale řekněte -- Čim, čim, čimčarara, zase nová to jinak. Nejde to. Svět je opravdu moda, v které naši paní tetku bude jistě poplivaný. Jakpak objímat svět, Kejhalka se ani neohlédla a když je poplivaný? Nic člověk nemá, pospíchala dále. Před síní na výsluní než tu zemi pod nohama; ta mu patří s zastihla kočku. Rozespalá Mica kusem chodníku, po kterém se může otevřela oči, aby se.podívala, kdo se to projít, na kterém může uvidět své podle ní belhá. Ani věřit nechtěla, že je známé, po kterém jde z práce do práce to Kejhalka. Byla jí k smíchu. Neod­ -- a on na ten kus světa -- plivá. pustila si, aby nezamňoukala: Zvyká si na to hezky brzy, aby svět -- Mňau, mňau, mňaumňaumňau, dobře poplivával. Špunt, že ho není u klamou mne snad moje oči? Celý dvůr země skoro ani vidět, ale už mužně se rozesměje, až ten nový kabát zočí! plivá po ulici, z okna, se schodů.

Kejhalka se zapýřila, ale Potom začne kouřit a plivat ještě neodpověděla. Pospíchala jí z dohledu. mužněji. Potom už se mu to rozumí Cestou k. rybníku ji potkala kolébavá samo sebou. Ale i děvčátka plivají! To kachna Kačka. Jindy by se s ní byla je teprve pěkné! A každé to ošklivé, zastavila, aby si pohovořila o docela zbytečné plivnutí -- poplivaný přátelstvu, ale dnes jako by ji neznala. svět. Kdyby mohl svět mluvit, ten by Ani si jí nevšimla. V zahradě měli nasazeno hodně zeleniny a ovoce. Největší radost jsem měl, když jsem viděl růsti a uzrávati melouny. To mne poučoval strýc: "Jen se podívej jak je všechno pěkně uspořádáno.

Jablka rostou na stromech, aby člověk vynaložil trochu úsilí nežli je může jísti. Kdyby rostla na zemi, nejen červi, ale i zajíci a jiná zvířata by je sežrala dříve než by uzrála. A kdyby melouny rostly na stromech, to by mohly způsobili hodně škody a polámati větve. A to by to zatroleně dopadlo, kdyby spadly někomu na hlavu! Ono to dost: bolí, když někdy člověku, který leží natažený a odpočívá pod stromem -­ spadne na nos jen ořech! --" Strýc mně určil kousek zahrádky, kde jsem si také nasadil fazole, a to jsem měl, panečku, radost jak rostly!

Několikráte jsme se šli koupat do nedalkého rybníka a taky jsem chytal ryby.

Strýcova Jiřinka mne jednou volala: "Pojď se podívat, Vašíčku, na bobra, kterého Jenda přivezl."

Opravdu -- bylo to zvíře jako malý medvěd. Starší bratr, když přijížděl z města, ho přejel v údolí. Když ho zvážili, zjistili, že je 45 liber těžký.

Stáhli s něho kůži a po vydělání ji prodali.

Našli jsme s Jiřinkou za stodolou želvu, kterou již někdo poznamenal, neboť měla nazádech vyryta písmena JH a PS. Jiřinka hádala: "To byl jistě Jenda s Pavlínkou .,» Nejradši jsem měl Reka, huňatého vlčáka, který všude se mnou chodil.

Jednou, když jsme šli přes pole k řece, tu se mu zježil hřbet a silně počal štěkati. Před ním jsem spatřil v trávě se svíjeti zelenou zmiji. -- Obrátili jsme a rychle. spěchali nazpět k farmě! Když přišel poslední den, který jsem tam ztrávil, tu mne Rek vůbec nechtěl opustiti, stále pokňukával, jakoby cítil, že ztratí kamaráda. -- Musili ho zavříti, aby neskočil do auta, které nás odváželo k nádraží. Jsem zvědav, jestli mne ještě pozná až tam zase pojedu--?

These consonants have about the same sound as in English: b, d, f, h, l, m, n, p, r, s, v, and z.

Durative and Iterative Verbs.

1) těch: mých/našich, tvých/vašich, jejích (her); moderních, dobrých; pánů, hradů, žen, měst; mužů, strojů, ulic/růží, písní, kostí, moří, nádraží.

Note: 1. Types žena and město drop their vowel endings and therefore we often find at their ends difficult groups of consonants. We separate these con­ sonants by inserting a movable -e-: sestra -- sester, studentka -- studentek, dívka -- dívek, továrna -- továren, and similary jídelen, oken, čísel, divadel, kamen; but lamps -- lamp, město -­ měst. Compare: Karel -- A. sg. Karla, pes -- psa, otec -- otce, kopec -- na kop­ ci.

2. Type ulice/ulic represents nouns of home origin that end in -ce, -ice, or -ile, -íle: silnice, lžíce, košile, chvíle, stanice, radnice, sestřenice, vánoce, velikonoce, Budějovice, and other.

Words of foreign origin ending in -ce: revoluce, existence, and the rest of feminine nouns ending in N. sg. in -e, decline like růže/růží: . práce, kůže, tabule, židle, večeře, fotografie, Marie, pečeně, etc.

3. Some nouns shorten their stem vowel in G. pl: peníze -- peněz, chvíle --chvil, lžíce -- lžic, síla -- sil (force, power), jméno -- jmén, léto -- let.

4. Two words with double G. pl. form and double meaning: neděle: 5 neděl (5 weeks) - 5 nedělí (5 Sundays): léto: 5 let (5 years) -- 5 lét (5 summers).

2) As for the use of genitive plural see lessons 17, 18 and 19. G. pl. is also us­ ed after words mnoho, hodně, moc (all: much, many), málo (few), trochu (a few), pár (a couple of), kolik (how many), několik (several), tolik (so many) and numerals higher than four: pět, šest, sedm ... deset.. .padesát pět ... sto ... Observe:Ten cizinec zná jen deset českých slov. Alena má ve škole mnoho dobrých kamarádů a kamarádek.

Kup mi pět slaných housek a deset makových rohlíků. Zep­ tali jsme se těch cizind. Na přednášce bylo mnoho Čechů a Slováků a také několik Američanů. Zůstanu v Praze od vánoc až do velikonec. Bohužel (un­ fortunately) si nepamatuji jména těch krásných hradů, které jsme viděli.

3) Some imperfective verbs form pairs with one member, the durative verb, expressing an action that occurs in a definite time, once' determinate verbs; and the other member, the iterative verb, expressing and action in general, or action that occurs repeatedly, often: indeterminate verbs. Observe: Dnes večer pujdu do divadla. Bratr Karel ještě chodí do školy.
