. District V Recognizes Achievers' Award Winners At the SPJST spring seminars held statewide, winners of the Achievers' Awards were announced. To be desig­ nated an achiever, the sales repre­ sentative must have produced 1 O life applications issued in 1990.

trict V won the Achievers' Award, which was a gold pen and pencil set.

The winners from Lodge 88, Houston were Franklin Bravenec, District V Director Louis Hanus, Tillie Helmcamp, Mildred Holeman, Lowrina Lindemann and Edna Wehr­ ing. Vicki Dressler from Lodge 172 in Pasadena also won the Achiever's Award.

Also another remarkable evidence of high interest in this district meeting was the presence of so ma[\y officers from local lodges. District IV Meeting To Be Hosted By Lodge No.160, San Angelo Dear Supreme Lodge Officers and Members of District IV: The officers of Lodge 160, San An­ gelo invite the Supreme Lodge officers and their spouses and all District IV members and their families to the 1991 spring meeting on Sunday, April 28 at Wall Fire Hall in Wall located a few miles out of San Angelo just off High­ way 87 South. A moment of silence was held for the three members who passed away since the last meeting. They were John Hlinsky, Charlie Divin and Mrs. Julia Zatopek.

Mrs. Bessie Hruska and Mrs. Bur­ dine Divin gave a report on the workshop which they attended at Lodge 80, Holland in February.

Lodge No. 51, Ellinger met for their quarterly meeting on March 20 at 7 :00 p.m. at the Ellinger Fire Station. The attendance was very good.

Hot dogs, chips; cold drinks and cof­ fee were enjoyed after the meeting.

Sales Representatives present at the meeting were Ricky Benner, D.I, Bohac, Glenda Liles and Dan Grossman.

President Rohde caJled on Secretary Glen Latham to read the minutes from the March meeting. They were ap­ proved as read.

A thank you card was received from the St. John Lutheran Church of Bartlett thanking Lodge No. 80 for the use of the barbecue pit in preparation of barbecue for the retirement dinner of Pastor Rose.

Preparations for our annual picnic are being made; the picnic will be May 19th.

President Rohde asked Albert Novosad to come forward. President Rohde then presented Brother Albert with a 50-year pin. Joe Balusek and Violet Dolhite also received 50-year pins, but were not present at our meet­ ing.

Birthdays for April were Rayette Speakman and Barbra Taisler.

Door prize winners were Albert Novosad, D.I. Bohac, Otto Horelica, Ricky Benner and Glen Latham.

Bake Sale Thanks Lodge No. 84, Dallas Dear Members and Friends: Our Easter bake sale was great. We want to thank Bessie' s Catering for use of ber facilities to bake kolaches and tea rings for two whole days and also Rudolph's Market for letting us sell our pastries on Saturday before Easter. Sister Bessie and Brother Emil Petr, and Brother Sid and Brother Jus­ tine Pokladnik -- thanks to you all.

We certainly thank -, all the sisters who helped bake; to allour members who donated baked items or items to bake with and to everyone who helped in any way and, yes, to our many members and friends who bought pastries. One customer had an order of kolaches sent alf the way to Florida.

The hours of donated work to bake and deliver amounted well over 140 hours. · The lodge appreciates and thanks all for this hard work -- but we did have fun, too.

Also, Sister Vrla received a letter from the Folklife Festival in San An­ tonio assuring us that the festival will be held, as usual, this year. On April 26th, the Annual International Festival will begin and Brother Arnold Vrla passed out work schedules to the par­ ticipants and workers. On Saturday, LODGE 84's ANNIVERSARY concluded with a program put on by the April 27th a group will participate in Teen and Junior Youth, which was well-done and enjoyed by all.

Brother George Pauling, our new District III rest homes director, spoke of his first time sitting in on the board meeting and stated that they checked the books and both homes are in good shape and are operating in the black.

He also said that a new roof will be needed soon on the home which will be taken care of.

I hope that our members have not forgotten that we will NOT have our regular lodge meeting on the second Sunday, it has been changed to . Sun­ day, May 5th due to Mother's Day being on May 12th and families like to be together on that occasion. PLEASE don't forget the change.

Our sympathy is extended to Henry Lockstedťs family. Brother Lockstedt of Arlington, Texas passed away April 5, 1991. He worked for General Motors for many years. He was Christine's (my wife) cousin and also Carlyn Ondrusek's.

I heard that Sister Bennie Bartek has a save-a-life monitor which will help her in case she falls or is sick and all she needs to do is press a button and help will be on the way right away. I believe this is a good thing to have when someone lives alone. We miss Sister Bartek at our meetings including several others who are unable to at­ : tend. Lodge 88, Houston Birthday Club News On April 10, 1991 the Birthday Club met in the dining room of Lodge 88 at 11:15 a.m. with President Lowrina Lindemann calling the roll. We had a good attendance despite the rainy weather.

The minutes were read by Secretary Rita Alexander and approved as read.

Rita also read correspondence from Mary Ehret who always writes such beautiful letters.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the finan­ cial report, which was very good. She also thanked Tilly Bily for the $11.00 donation to the club.

Ladies Circle News The April 9th meeting of Lodge No. 92 Ladies Circle opened with Presi­ dent Clara Cohen presiding. Members sang the beautiful song "Let There Be Peace on Earth."

From The State Youth Director 1991Youth Leaders' Workshop Camp Tejas in Giddings was the site for the 1991 Youth Leaders' Workshop. Although the weather was stormy and rainy, we had a productive and enjoyable weekend.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, SYD and DYCs held their spring meeting to discuss upcoming dates and activities for the Youth Pro­ gram. Please consult your youth calen­ dar for upcoming district and stale dates.

Due to rain, Friday night's campfire ceremony was held in the conference room fireplace. Lodge 63 Sweet Home's new Youth Leader Susan Bolech, placed last year's workshop ashes in the fire. Song Leaders Jim and Melissa Wiederhold taught us some wonderful environmental songs that we can teach the youth at camp.

Saturday morning brought flag-rais­ ing and the awarding of the traditional name tag chicken. The poor old chick­ en changed hands quite a bit that weekend. I'm sure that we have not seen the last of him.

Saturday morning had the youth leaders showing off their knowledge and expertise on the Rule Book. The only problem we had was remember­ ing which chair to sit in.

Assistant DYC Randy Gaas, and DYCs Patsy Koslovsky, Bessie Petr and Maxine Pavliska shared ideas on the following special events: Memorial Services, Fund Raisers, Seventy and Over Party and Lock-Ins. I know that the leaders found this information very

helpful and are planning to implement these activities in their program.

Janet Juban with Texans War On Drugs shared some very helpful infor­ mation on drug awareness and how we, as leaders, can be instrumental in deterring youth from becoming in­ volved with drugs. Janet stressed that education is the key to keeping youth off of drugs.

Saturday afternoon was jam packed with workshops in mask and wreath making led by Ruth Hanusch and Claudette Reese and games were led

by Mike Spiller. Saturday evening the leaders were treated to a 1970 Earth Day Party where everyone dressed in sixties and early seventies attire. The dance workshop was led by Shirley Norman and her daughter. I believe that the most fun had was the grand march under the guidance of Kay Majek of Corpus Christi.

May Vestnik Project Early Czech Architecture The earliest Czech settlers in the mid-nineteenth century built loksaky (log cabins) with thatch or rough shake roofs and packed dirt floors. Cracks in the walls were often filled with moss or clay. A large family would some­ times live in a 10' x 12' cabin. Later, similar structures were built of rough lumber cut at a nearby mill. As the family's situation improved, the original one-room building might be­ come the kitchen, as a larger, uncon­ nected house would be built in close proximity. These early houses bear a resemblance to some of the more primitive houses in Moravian villages, with their rough (unpainted) timber construction. However, clay was never

ad~pted as a ~ajor buu~ňg material,. as 1t had been m Moravia. And as the Texas Czechs enlarged and improved their farm houses, they looked much like those built by other Texans. The two-part "dog trot" structure (two structures connected by an open porch in the middle) gave way to multi-room frame houses. These houses were generally painted white, usually with an attic, and with second story, if possible.

Upstairs bedrooms were desirable because they were breezier and, therefore, cooler at night. Red tile roofs, baroque decorations, bright colors on exterior stuccoed walls, and other features of prosperous farm homes in the Czech lands were almost entirely lacking in Texas. Of course, the Texas Czechs, like many other · Texans, retained the Old World custom of maintaining a prominent larder, a smokehouse, and other features of a largely self-sufficient farm.

Dear Members, On March 28th we got together in SPJST Youth Department my home to make our goodies for our Easter bake sale on March 30th. The P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503 girls baked 10 cakes. The boys baked .........

Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held March 17th. This day was St. Patrick's Day and everyone wore green.

Snook Lodge 9 Youth Meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Our youth club of Lodge 9 in Snook had their monthly meeting on April 3rd.

We set a work day on April 13th to get ready for Snook Fest. We then went to the Snook Veterinarian Clinic where Dr. Marsha Stein gave us a talk about her practice and her special monkey. It was fun.

Features 1991 Miss East Texas National Teen-Ager Pageant Stephanie LaNae Roye, 16-year-old daughter of Anita and Bobby Roye of El Campo, has been selected SECOND RUNNER-UP in the 1991 Miss Bast Texas National Teen-Ager Pageant.

Ninety-eight finalists competed in the pageant held on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, April 12-14.

This pageant is an official prelími­ naiy pageant to the 20th Annual Miss Texas National Teen-Ager Pageant to be held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, June 14-16.

StephanieLaNaeRoye The East Texas Teen-Ager Pageant awarded $29,000 in tuition scholar­ ships from various universities during the pageant weekend. Every contestant received a $200 scholarship to both Barbizon and John Robert Powers Schools of Modeling. Stephanie received a $2,000 scholarship to Marý Hardin-Baylor and a beautiful trophy.

Contestants were judged on scholastic achievement-leadership, appearance, and poise-personality. Stephanie also participated in the volunteer com­ munity service program of the Nation­ al Teen-Ager Pageant. This program teaches teenagers to share and to par­ ticipate in school and civic activities.

Talent competition was optional and of the 60 participants, Stephanie was chosen FIRST RUNNER-UP. She per­ formed a lyrical dance to "Bird on a Wire" that she choregrapbed herself.

The Czech Heritage Society News The Czech Heritage Society of Texas held its 1991 spring meeting on Satur­ day, March 23 at SPJST Lodge No. 6 in the Cottonwood community near West.

The lodge hall was opened at 1O o'clock in the morning for regístratíon and fellowship. Everyone who came early enjoyed the fellowship hour talk­ ing, meeting new friends, drinking cof­ fee and eating kolaches.

At 11 o'clock in the morning, Robert Janak of Beaumont presented a family history workshop. His talk included a slide presentation illustrating the various sources of information avail­ able to the family history researcher.

Lunch, consisting of baked chicken with all the trimmings, was served at noon. During the lunch hour, members and visitors had another opportunity to visit with each other and get better ac­ quainted.

President Jerry Prochazka called the business portion of the meeting to order at 1 o' clock in the afternoon.

Reports were given by several of the officers, various committees and each constituent chapter. Melvin Post, a member of Harris County Chapter, was honored for having submitted "Cesky Hlas" as the name for the society's state newsletter and was presented a one year free membership in the society and given a book on Czechos­ lovakia, donated by Lillia Mae Peter.

After the business meeting, Bill Malina of Houston spoke on the religious development in Czech Lands prior to the Protestant Reformation.

Mr. and Mrs. CharlieMatcek Charlie and Mary Matcek of Wharton, members of SPJST Lodge 81 in Needville, celebrated their SOth wedding anniversary February 25, 1991.

Their sons, Charlie, Stan and Don and daughters-in-law, Vicki and Linda planned a celebration held at lodge hall in Needville. Many friends and relatives, including brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and grandchildren joined in the festivities.

45th Anniversary Celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Joe Zela of Rosenberg Praha, Texas. The Zelas are parents of celebrated their 45th wedding anniver­ three sons, William Zela of Damon, sary on Tuesday, January 8, 1991. A John Zela of Katy and Eugene Zela of Mass was celebrated for them at Holy Needville.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů.

Schůze Společnosti českého dědictví Jarní celostátní schůze Společnosti českého dědictví státu Texasu se konala v sobotu 23. března 1991 v síni řadu SPJST číslo 6, v okolí Cotton­ wood, blízko města West, Texas.

Síň byla otevřena v deset hodin ráno na zapisování členů a hostů. Tak bylo příležitost si pohovořit, besedovat, spřátelit a seznámitse jeden s druhým.

V jedenáct hodin ráno Robert Janák z Beaumont vedl krátký seminář o pramenech potřebných na hledání a vyšetrování rodinné historie.

Pečené slepice byly na oběd a podával se v dvanáct hodin v poledne. Úřední část schůze začala v jednu hodinu odpoledne. Úředníci, výbory a zástupci z okresní odbočky podali své zprávy. Melvin Post byl oceněn za jmenování novin společnosti. Vybrané jméno novin je "Český Hlas." Pan Post byl obdarován členství ve společnostina rok za darmo a také byl ob darován knížkou o Československu, kterou darovala Lillia Mae Peter.

Vilém (Bill) Malina z Houston mluvil o náboženském rozvoji v českých zemích po smrti císaře Karel IV.

Asiv čtyři hodin odpoledne nová od­ bočka z Mcl.ennan-Hill okresu byla založena. Úředníci nové odbočky byli zvolení a nastolení.

Příští schůzese bude konat v sobotu 8. červnu v okolí Rowena blízko města San Angelo, Texas.

velmi malé a výraz "Moravec" se tam prakticky již nepoužívá. Ač tyhle fakta jsou mi známa ze školních let tak jsem si je před nedávnem ověřilještě jednou přes Masarykovu universitu v Brně k rychlému zastaveníjakékoliv polemiky s nevěřícími Tomáši na toto téma.

Název "Moravec" byl sem do Texasu převezen v minulém století několika rodinami, které "naočkovaly" své okolí tímto výrazem. Tento nesprávný výraz se záhy ujal tu tak, že mnoho našich Texanů si říká Moravci ať jejich rodiny přišly sem do Texasu z moravského Slovácka, z Českomorav­ ské vysočiny či dokonce z Hané! V poslední době však konečnějiž na tom­ to poli svítá a z Moravců se stávají Moravané!

Moravané a Moravanky i ostatní krajané!

Setkání bylo překrásné, dojemné, byly citovány Dykovy básně, zejména p.Judr Homr zpaměti přednesl celou básen ZEME MLUVI. Pohled od kostela sv. Petra a Pavla kde je pomník Viktora Dyka na krajinu v zimním oparu v pozadí s horou Říp byl překrásný a nezapomenutelný, zejména když Pan Navrátil zacitoval část básně z "Noční elegie": Z té teskné roviny, kde volně teče labe ... Před setkání jsem požádal skupinu mladých Jugoslávců z okolí Dubrovníka aby zazpívali Jugoslávské národní písničky ... Pan Jiří Uher pak položil kytici krásných květin k pomnfku, V kratičké besedě jsme si

sdělitisvé dojmy i problémy a nyní již věřím, že život a dílo Pana Viktora Dyka nezůstane zapomenuto a znovu najde více a více ctitelů velikého díla nejen na Mělníku. Problém je a zůstane rekonstrukce Dykova rodného domu na Mělníku-Pšovce. Dům je dlouhodobě zanedbaný, obrostlý křovím a bude jistě několik roků trvat, než bude opraven a alespoň 1 místnost v původni ůpravě, poněvadž Viktor Dyk měl rád původní věc. Chalupa je v překrásném sedlčanské kraji zvaným Ceský Merán, ekolgicky nejčistčím místem snad Čech, v okolí jsou krásné lesy plné hub a borůvek: Je to moje rodná chalupa a náš rod ji obývájiž od r. 1777. Máme rodovou svatou Bibli v kůži a zlaté ořízku, kterou získal náš praděd za věrné služby. U domku je zahrádka. Tento kraj navštěvoval také rád p. Viktor Dyk a byl bych rád, aby se zde cítili příznivcidíla Viktora Dyka jako doma, scházeli se zde a kdo by měl zájem třeba i celoročně se zde rekreovat. Chalupu jsem kompletně ' přestavoval, zatím není celá vybavená nábytkem. Bylo by dobré, aby každý kdo by měl zájem se v domku rekreovat tam měl svůj "podkladek" židli, stůlhrnek, zasazený stromek a pod. Tak jako p. Viktor Dyk rád vyjížděl ve 20 letech z Prahy nadýchat se čerstvého "Povětří" aby každý, kdo · je čestný a inteligentní a v mých letech (1931 r.n.) měl možnost v chalupě "Pobejt" jak by chtěl dlouho a třeba i zdarma za to, že je ctitelem díla Viktora Dyka.

V mělníku i v Praze je na 60 výročí úmrtí v květnu t.r. připraveno literární pásmo, výstava a další vzpomínkové · oslavy, přesný program a datum bude ještě oznámeno dodatečně. Dále dosud jsou různé nepřesné informace o posledních okamžicích života Viktora Dyka a jsou i nepřesné údaje o místě kde ukončil svoji životní pout.

Podrobnosti zveřejním samozřejmě ověřenév květnu. Ještě jednou prosím, kdo pojede i z Vašich známých v květ­ nu do Jugoslavie, aby Česká ruka položila u pomníku na ostrově LOPUD květiny a připevnila tabulku s charakteristikou života a díla Viktora Dyka, našeho velkého básníka, aby pomník nebyl opuštěný... Jak jsem se již zmínil z finančních důvodů se již na Lopud nemohu rozjet. Bylo by však smutné, aby pomník a místo posledních okamžiků bylo bez květin.

Pokud se týká knih a literatury prosím ještě o zaslání seznamů, ale věřím, že p. Jaroslav Med připraví postupně k vydání celédílo, které bude jistě rozebráno.

Pohádka Lev a myška Lev spal. Malá myška mu skočila na záda. Lev se probudil a chytil myš do svých drápů. Vlekaná myš prosila lva: "Pusť mně, odplatim se ti jednou."

Lev se dal do smíchu, že mu malá myška slibuje odplatu, ale pustil ji na svobodu.

Za rok lovci chytili lva a přivázali ke stromu provazem. Myška uslyšela řváni lva, přišla, přehryzla provaz a . pravila: "Vidíš, smál jsi se, že bych ti nemohla pomoci, ale teď vidíš, že i malá myška může mnoho vykonati."

Ztracený život.

Otec se na chvíli zamyslil, pak pravil: "Zavinil si svůj žalostný osud sám. Najednou začal lenošit, přestával se učit, napomínání ve škole ani doma nedbal, zamiloval si toulky a nad všechnydomluvy měl jenom nerozum­ nou odpověď, že to nějak dopadne.

Když propadl, dali ho rodiče na učení zahradnictví. Učil se asi rok, ale byl nepořádný. a z učení zběhl. Ještě několik jiných řemesel zkusil; nedoučil se však nikde a stal se z něho na konec takový věčný tulák, který se probíjel náhodnou prací, kterou mu někde dali, ale více žebrotou. Každá snaha mu pomoci byla marnou! Několikráte jsme se pokusili, my jeho bývalí spolužáci, opatřiti mu místečko sluhy, poslíčka a podobně; ale nikde nevydržel a z místa utekl. Myslím, že propadl i pití. Je to ztracený člověk, I který pozbyl dávno vůli a snahu žít I pořádně. A nemůže nikomu ničeho vyčítat; vše si zavinil sám! Je to smutné, ale splnilo se na něm přísloví, jak si kdo ustele, tak si lehne!"
