Saturday, March 23 •• the statewide meeting of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS) was held at SPJST Lodge Moravsti Bratri (Moravian Brothers) Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

The program began at 11 :00 a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m.

The meeting which was very interest­ ing and constructive, was chaired by Brother Jerry Prochazka, CHS State President and the former SPJST Dis­ trict V Director of Crosby, Texas.

Before the meeting concluded, the Mcl.ennan-Hill Counties Chapter of CHS was organized. Brother Raymond Marek of West was elected president of the local chapter and the remainder of the particulars for publication will be submitted by their CHS reporter.

We are delighted that the local chap­ ter was organized and to see so many people taking interest in their Czech­ Moravian heritage and culture. We also wish them much success in their endeavors.

The spring sessions of the SPJST Sales Representatives' Continuing Education seminars were held recently in Elgin and Temple.

SFM Gene McBride, with the assis­ tance of District II Director Willie E. Kohutek, Supreme Lodge Vice Presi­ dent Bernard M. Gebala and his Secretary Kathy C. Fritz, conducted the seminars designed to promote ad­ vanced insight into the modem types of insurance and how they meet SPJST members' needsmore fully.

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to

Minutes of District II Meeting Dear District II Members: Our 1991 spring meeting was held on Sunday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Elgin Lodge No. 18.

The meeting was called to order by District II President Ronnie Rieger of Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

Members were welcomed by Elgin Lodge No. 18 President Dale Kessel.

All officers were present, except Second Vice President Norma Cavanaugh of Lodge No. 20, Granger and Flag Bearer Tommy Rieger of Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

Members recited the Pledge of Al­ legiance and remained standing to deceased members.

District II Secretary Arleen Tschoemer of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone read the names of the deceased mem­ bers.

Dorothy Pechal, District II treasurer of Lodge No. 47, Seaton welcomed a special guest from Czechoslovakia, Matilda Haveldova; we hope you en­ joyed our meeting.

Visitors recognized from the Supreme Lodge were Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and State FAC Frank Klinkovsky and District VI Director Matt Vanek and Mrs. Matt Vanek.

The minutes of the 1990 fall meeting . were read and approved with one cor­ rection.

Dorothy Pechal gave the treasurer's report.

District II Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge No. 47, Seaton gave the youth report and recognized the youth leaders in attendance at the meeting; also recognized were District II Queen Melanie Zavodny of Lodge No. 24 and State Duke David Kos­ lovsky of Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Patsy also mentioned a few upcom­ ing events, namely, District II YAD on July 14 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone; Camp, July 18-24; State Royalty, August 17 at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone and State YAD, August 18 at Maybom Convention Center.

Audit Committee Chairman Lad Zatopek gave the audit report and stated the books were in good order.

Brother Zatopek also is a member on the By-laws Committee and mentioned the upcoming 1992 convention and urged everyone to send in their sugges­ tion about changes to the by-laws; send your suggestion to any member of the By-law Committee.

Other committee members recog­ nized were Insurance--Ladis Navratil, Publication--Dorothy Pechal , and Finance--Jerry Valchar.

District II Rest Homes Director Dan Balusek spoke on the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes and mentioned that several people have retired and new personnel was on board. Brother Balusek stated that a piano was needed for entertain­ ment at the rest homes and anyone wishing to donate money could contact him on the rest home. A big THANK YOU to Lodge No. 187, Round Rock who have already donated $200.00 towards the project.

Congratulations to all of you. _ District II Director Willie E. Kohutek gave his report. He awarded Albin Machu with the Million-Dollar Producer Award and also recognized the 96-year members from the district, namely, Mytilda Sodek of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone and Annie Urbek of Lodge No. 87, Temple.

Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas had a few words to say about the SPJST and its growth. He also passed out the checks to our treasurer.

State FAC Frank Klinkovsky gave a report on upcoming events planned for the rest of the year.

Lodge No.1, Fayetteville Members and guests of Lodge No. 1 met Sunday, March 10, 1991 at the SPJST Hall in Fayetteville to honor the following members who have at­ tained 50-year membership with SPJST, namely: Ruth Ann Fisher, Mar­ tha Koenig, Goldie Kovar and Edward Kulhanek.

President Buddy Polansky presented 50-year pins to Goldie Kovar and Ed­ ward Kulhanek who were in atten­ dance. The two other members were recognized but were unable to attend.

A short business meeting was held to discuss projects for 1991 which will include the painting of the SPJST Hall and members were asked to complete Fraternal Service Logs for 1990 in­ volving acts of fraternal service.

After the meeting, members were entertained by the Fayette Czech Dan­ cers and Singers sponsored by the Fayette County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas who asked members and guests to sing along.

Many popular Czech and German songs were sung and several patriotic songs were sung to remember our troops who participated in Desert Storm.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon which concluded with everyone sam­ pling all the delicious desserts which members brought to bring together the fellowship and fun.

The mother lodge enjoyed the spaghetti and salad supper that the youth club served; they did a fabulous job and the food was delicious.

The Entertainment Committee was informed by Bill Malina that the first weekend in November, Pasadena Lodge No. 172 has a Polka Battle Dance, and we did too at Lodge 88, so Harley Cox was able to switch dates with our polka dance and engage a big name band, which helped Pasadena No. 172 and also Lodge 88.

Lodge No. 177, Academy The March meeting of Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 7:30 p.m. The pledge was recited.

A moment of silence was observed for Gaylon Gerngross.

All officers were present. The minutes were read and approved. A thank you note was received from the Wilbert Baca family.

Libbie Bartek sent a get well card to Mrs. Ray Ibarra.

All reports were good.

New members are Rebecca and Jen­ nifer McNeil and Lisa Hillan.

The trustees opened bids on replac­ ing the dance floor and · decided to check on the work and make a decision on who would do the best job and award the bid.

Our members went to Glaser's fish farm for a fish fry and the meal was enjoyed by all members.

Discussed was also donating $300 to Bell County Special Athletics and $250 to KNCT; these donations came from the social games' account. Game night is going over big at the hall.

Louis Driska reported his granddaughter, Sue Ann Hamby, made an appearance on television and he was quite proud and we were sure Jean was also. Jean Driska is still unable to attend lodge meetings and we miss you, Jean.

Louis Driska further suggested that it would be a good idea to speak to the Supreme Lodge about a full page ad in the Vestnik honoring our armed forces.

The lodge will have a work day on April 19th. Members are urged to at­ tend and help with some work; supper will be furnished and we hope to start at 6 p.m., but feel free to get there and start early if you wish.

Members donated 37 cup towels for the hall kitchen with more to come next month.

Martha Durham spoke briefly on her trip to Austin for the Governor's In­ auguration and promised to bring pic­ tures of the event to our next meeting.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to mem­ bers, Catherine Kosarek, Rose Jaworski, Mary Botek, Justine Chalup­ ka, Maria Prill, Mary White and Josephine Prochaska.

Hermina Cihacek gave a poetry read­ ing and the blessing before the meet­ ing adjourned so all could enjoy a delicious lunch. Forty-four ladies and ten men were present.

The door prize was won by Jo Prochaska.

A hot lunch was taken to one of our shut-in honorary members, Bennie Bartek.

Seaton Youth Held Annual Fund-Raiser Dear Vestnik Readers, Seaton Lodge No. 47 Youth Club would like to thank all of those who participated at our annual fund-raiser on February 16th. We appreciate all of you who worked in so many ways, made donations, and made purchases at our auction. Thanks to all of you, our evening was very successful. We thank you for the support of our youth club.

The destination of our trip has not been decided; remember to bring your suggestions and ideas to our next meeting.

Our youth club is very proud of the safe return of Sgt. John Mitchell from Desert Storm. Our members have been corresponding with him through cards and letters while he was overseas.

WELCOME HOME, SGT. JOHN MITCHELL! Our Easter egg hunt will be held on Sunday, April 7 after our regular meet­ ing. We would like to invite all Lodge 47 members to attend. Each family is asked to bring 10 filled plastic eggs.

Be sure and bring your Easter baskets, young and old. There will be fun for everyone.

Seaton will be holding their first May Fete on Saturday. May 18th. Con­ gratulations to our 1991 May Fete Queen Laura Gibson; Laura will be representing Seaton at the other May Fetes in the area. Her escort is E.J. Pechal. Congratulations also to our Princesses Lori Greger, Tonja Holt, Amy Kohutek and Heide Schroeder.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Activities Dear Members and Friends, The fun began on March 21, 1991 when Barbara Linney started boiling Easter eggs for our Easter egg hunt.

On March 22 energetic youth of Dis­ trict V dyed the eggs. All the youth leaders and their assistants had a wonderful time. We ate pizza and drank sodas afterwards.

Decorations were in the making and last minute details were worked out among the LITs. Assistant District V DYC and Lodge 88 Youth Leader Barbara Linney

helped "Grandma Bunny" District V DYC Marie Stayton put prizes and goodies together for all of the wonder­ ful children. Grandma Bunny had to hop to it to get Junior Bunny to settle down. He was so eager and willing to help GrandmaBunny hand out goodies they picked up down the bunny trail.

On March 23 Grandma Bunny in­ sisted the sun come out or she would be hopping mad. The sun came out!

Bunny LITs came early and blew up Easter colored balloons with ribbons so pretty.

They placed them all about the SPJST Bunny Patch.

Grandma Bunny and Junior Bunny were very busy. They wiggled their noses and snuggled up for picture's.

Everyone had a hopping good time.

I would like to thank all of the grandparents, parents and friends for bringing all the wonderful little egg hunters.

Children are so important and a spe­ cial gift to us all; you always get a lit­ tle love when you give a little love.

It always feels good to give of your­ self at times like these. I get great pleasure just watching a little one smile.

Thank you, everyone, it was a spe­ cial day.

68, of San Antonio, who died Friday, February 1, 1991.

Brother Downing worked for the Federal Government for 37 years and was a part-time instructor at San An­ tonio Junior College for 10 years. He and his wife, Anna, were married 48 years. He was a member of Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Lee Downing; sons and daughters-in-law, Walter D. and Sharon Downing Jr. of San Antonio, David R. and Jennifer Downing of Golden, Colorado; granddaughters, Kelly, Mandy, Julie and Skye; one brother, Burney Down­ ing of Elgin, Texas.

The family received friends Sunday evening from 4 p.m, to 5 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary.

Services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at Castle Hills First Baptist Church in San Antonio with Reverend Dr. George Harris and the Reverend James Ennis officiating. Interment was in Mission Burial Paik North.

Rosary was recited at 8 p.m, Friday in Triska Funeral Home and also rosary recitations by KIT and Knights of Columbus of which he was a mem­ ber of both societies and a member of SPJST Lodge No. 30 in Taiton.

Christian Burial was celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9 in St. John Catholic Church in Taiton (where he was a member) with Monsignor J.A. Petru officiating. Interment took place in Holy Cross Memorial Park, El Campo under the director of Triska Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Kuehn; one daughter, Gloria Krpec of Houston; six grandchildren, two great­ grandchildren; two sons-in-law, Char­ les Schneider and Frank Krpec, plus numerous nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death included one son, Alvin Kuehn; one daugher, Marilyn Kuehn Schneider; his parents; five brothers and six sisters.

Brother Kuehn was born in Moulton, Texas on July 19, f912 to the late August Kuehn, Sr. and Anna Pilsner Kuehn, the youngest son of 12 children.

Edwin Carl Kuehn and the former Annie Bolf were married on February 7, 1933by Rev. Joseph Kopp in Moul­ ton, Texas. The couple was blessed with three children (one son and two daughters) and 58 years of good mar­ ried life.

He was a retired farmer and school custodian.

Pallbearers were four grandsons and one nephew, Darrell Krpec, Alvin Schneider, Steven Schneider, Charles Schneider Ill, Alvin Bolf and Richard Bolls (husband of his granddaughter).

Honorary pallbearers were Charles Schneider, Alfred Kuehn, Clifton Bolf, Steven Kallina, Chris Bolls, Frank James, Johnny Voldan, Frank Prasek and Alfonse Cerny.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok Dallas No. 84, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to ex­ press our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister SOPHIE OLSOWSKI, who passed away at the age of 87 after a short illness. Sister Olsowski was born in Czechoslovakia. Her parents, Frank and Anna Janek and six children came to the United States when she was 8 years old. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84 and St. Augus­ tine Catholic Church.

She learned to crochet at a very young age and loved doing it to the very last. Each year she looked for­ ward to crocheting many beautiful items to donate to the Lodge 84 Czech Fest Benefit.

Survivors include a daughter, Carlyn Ondrusek; grandson, Joseph Ondrusek and wife, Timpy; granddaughter, Bar­ bara Wolfe and husband, Jack Wolfe; two great-grandsons, Carl Ondrusek and Bryan Wolfe and three great­ granddaughters, Amber Ondrusek, Betsy Wolfe and Bridget Wolfe.

Rosary was recited on Sunday, February 24th at Crane-Weiland Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was held February 25th at the Calvary Hill Mausoleum Chapel. Rev. Paul Weinberger was celebrant. Inter­ ment was at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas.

The 87-year-old king, symbol of Norway's resistance to the Nazi oc­ cupation in World War II, died of a heart attack late Thursday, January 17th.

Crowds poured into the center of the capital to pay the last respects, plant­ ing the above-mentioned red roses and lighted candles in the snow to trans­ form the area into a midwinter flower garden. Some scratched the word "takk" (Thanks) in the ice, while others scattered the snow with coins carrying King Olav's image.

Throughout the country, flags hung at half mast, while the church bells tolled, Prime Minister Oro Harlem Brundtland and her Cabinet, filed past the coffin at the palace, where the king was lying-in-state until the January 30 funeral.

In London, Queen Elizabeth II or­ dered eight days of court mourning for the Norwegian Monarch, a first cousin of her father, King George VI, and a great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

King Olav was born in England in Sandringham, Norfolk, on June 2, 1903, and graduated from Oxford in 1926. His links' with Britain were sealed in World War II, when Nor­ wegians under his leadership fought with the allied resistance against the Nazis.

King Olav is succeeded by his 53year-old son Harald, who is the first Norwegian king named Harald since Viking days. The new sovereign is ac­ tually the fifth Norwegian king to use the name Harald. His most famous predecessor of the same name, Harald (Haarfager), last of this particular line, was killed in 1066 in the battle at Stamford Bridge, not far from the an­ cient city of York in Yorkshire in Northem England.

City of York, one of the most histori­ cal places in . Britain, is located in Yorkshire, the largest county in England, having the area of 6,090 square miles. This city lies 188 miles NW of London, its population in 1938 was estimated 100,800 and its area is over 11 square miles. As Eboracum or Eburacum it was a military capital of Roman Britain and a fortress of Roman legions, especially of Legio IX, superceded later by Legio VI, up to the time of Roman withdrawal from Britain in 410. When did Romans get to Britian?

The first Roman expedition, led by Gaius Julius Caesar, landed in England in the year of 55 B.C.; another expedition followed the next year, in which Caesar with his troops fought his way to the Thames River. (Gaius J. Caesar was born in 100 B.C. and was murdered on 15th of March, 44 B.C.) Eventhough Rome was busy in the fol­ lowing years in the other parts of Europe, it continued to enlarge its con­ quered territory in Britain, too. The whole South of Britain was seized during the reign of Claudius Tiberius, who ruled from 41 to 54 A.D.; from that time the Roman power in Britain steadily increased by sizing more and more of the territory. During the reign of the Emperor Hadrianus (117-138) a line of defence called Hadrian Wall was built across England, close to Scottish borders against the Picts and Scots. (Picts were the non-celtíc people who once occupied the whole of Great Britain and were djsplaced by the Britons in most places. They congregated then in Northem Scotland, which was called Pictland or The Land of the Picts. These people carried on continual border wars with the Romans and about 368 A.D. joined Scots, Irish and Saxons in their ravages in Britain.

About the 9th century they became amalgamated with the Scots.) Let us return now to the Roman Britain.

Fifty-five years after a death of the defensive minded, peace-loving Emperor Hadrianus, the warlike Emperor Septimus Severus (193-211) died in York while attempting to size Caledonia in Scotland. According to the tradition, the corpse of Emperor Septimus Severus was burned on Severus Hill near the city. The follow­ ing 20 Emperors were selected into their office by the Legions and almost none of them died by natural death.

The Roman Empire basked in the new

glory during the reign of Diocletian (284-305). This Emperor divided his realm into West Roman and East Roman Empire, selecting a fellow ruler for the western part while keep­ ing for himself the eastern part. He also established the administrative hel­ per with a title of Caesar to each of the Emperors. Diocletian accepted as a fellow Emperor Marcus Valerius Max­ imian and gave him the West of the Empire. He also named Galerius as his caesar, while M.V. Maximian chose Constantinus Chlorus to be his caesar in the West. Constantinus Chlorus was in charge of Gaul (present France) and Roman Britain. He died there at York in 306. This important Roman fortress was later visited by his son, Constan­ tine the Great (324-337), who was in­ augurated there.

Nineteen years after Diocletian's retirement in 305, Constantine I, The Great, the sole survivor of six rival emperors, united the whole empire under his own rule. His reign of 14 years was marked by the events of first rate importance --- the recognization of Christianity as the religion of the empire and the building of the new capital of Byzantium. Constantine I, The Great, summoned in 314 The First General Council of the Western Church to Arles to settle a religious dispute after the assembly of referees meeting dealing with this matter in Rome had failed to solve this issue in 313. Thirty-three bishops attended at Arles, three of whom were from Britain, thus at Arles was present the bishop of York, mentioned together with, and with precedence of, a bishop of London. (By the way; the historical town of Arles is located in South-East of France, 54 miles N.W. of the great harbour city Marsaille.) Constantine The Great also chaired the First Over­ all Council of the Christian Church in Nicaea in the Asia Minor in 325, which issued the Nicene Creed, later expanded, that begins "I believe in one God." The reign of Constantine The Great, from his inauguration at York of Britain in 306 to the death of his third and last son Constantius in 361 is often called Constantinian Period.

Previously mentioned Emperor Diocletian (284-305) _lived during his retirement in Salona (present Split),· Dalmatia, the coastal region of present Yugoslavia until his death in 313.

While partially traveling with Klecka's Klub Kontinental from East Bernard, Texas, in 1988 in Yugoslavia, Edith and I, and the whole group, stopped in Split to visit Diocletian's palace located right at the city. It was quite a sight to see! I and my com­ panion decided on our way to Split "to split," that is to depart from the tour, and travel ourselves by train from this seaport to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, one of the Republics in the Federated Yugoslavia. Alas, the train traveling northwest from Split into Zagreb left half an hour ago and the next one was going about 8 hours later! Needless to say, we thus decided to stay with the group to travel along­ side the Adriatic coast to the historical town of Trogir and to the former Italian enclave of Zadar, where our group stayed overnight. We traveled with the group to Zagreb, where our touring bus pulled in in the late after­ noon. We parted there with our fellow travelers and left close to midnight bv fast train to Vienna, Austria, arriving there about 11 A.M. the next day. Our journey then continued in a couple of hours from the other Vienna's railway station to Breclav in Czechoslovakia and from there in an hour or two by a Czech train to my hometown of Prerov in the central Moravia.

Let us return now to the Roman Em­ pire. The death of Constantine the Great in 337 was followed, as the ab­ dication of Diocletian had been, by the outbreak of quarrels among rival Caesars, compounded in Constantine's case by bloody disputes among his three sons. There was though a big dif­ ference between the above-mentioned epochs because the decline of West Roman Empire after the Constantinian Period rapidly worsened, leading to its final destruction in 468.

In the year of 375 started everywhere in Europe a gigantic movement called The Moving of Nations, which deeply influenced the fate of the Roman Em­ pire. This period of history was a

direct cause of Roman withdrawal from Britain because the legions from that country were needed elsewhere to stop constant invasions of so called barbarians into Italy. Romans left Britain in 410 during the reign of West Roman Emperor· Honorius, who ruled from 395 to 423. His capital city was Ravenna, close to the coast of Adriatic sea, north of Rimini on Italian Riviera.

(The sovereign of the East Roman Em­ pire was his brother, Arcadius, who ruled from 395 to 408; his capital city was Byzantium, later called Constan­ tinople, now Istanbul.)

Sister Cities Dallas/Brno -­ Czechoslovakia The Dallas SPJST Lodge No. 84, SPJST Lodge No. 130, the Sokol Ath­ letic Club, the Catholic Czech Club, KJT No. 111, KJZT No. 108, WFLA, RVQS, SMFIA, the Circle of Czech Women, Czech Historical Society, the Dallas/Ennis Fraternal Council and the KJT No. 107 of Abbott, Texas repre­ sented by the American-Czech Culture Society (ACCS), through a chartered non-profit corporation, the "Dallas Czech Community Sister Cities Ex­ change Program" (DCCSCBP), have been working for the past year with the City of Dallas to affiliate and establish a Sister Cities' Program with the City of Brno, Czechoslovakia.

The affiliation is now becoming a reality.

Resolutions of endorsement for the exchange program purpose have been passed by the Dallas City Council, and the listed lodges and organizations rep­ resented by ACCS. The program has

Sister Cities International, Alexandria, Virginia has affiliated 900 U.S. cities, representing over 125 mil­ lion Americans with 1,400 com­ munities in 92 nations of the world.

The Dallas/Brno Sister Cities is the first Czech sister cities affiliation in Texas and only the third in the United States.

The purpose of the Dallas/Brno Sister Cities Exchange program is to promote friendship, culture, education, sports, business, medicine and under­ standing between the . people of the City of Dallas, the Czech community and the City' of Brno in Moravia, Czechoslovakia. Even tough the ex­ change program bas its headquarters in Dallas, it is the intent of the DCCSCEP to represent and invite all Texas Czechs and Moravians to con­ sider being affiliated with this pro­ gram.

In reality the "roots" of this Sister Cities' program lie in the entire Texas Czech community. These roots have been kept alive by all of the formal, as well as informal, cultural exchanges

Recent events and future plans for DCCSCEP are: =On February 1, 1991, Mayor Strauss sent a letter to Brno Mayor Vaclav Mencl accepting his invitation for the "official delegation" from the City of Dallas and DCCSCEP to travel to Czechoslovakia on May 11th through May 19th to meet with U.S. Ambassador Shirley Temple Black, Prime Minister Petr Pithart, the Brno Municipal Council, and the community of Brno to research the exchange pro­ gram purpose, sign a Sister Cities' Agreement and invite a Brno delega­ tion to Dallas for a Reciprocal Ex­ change Agreement in 1991.

--To realize the program financially, the DCCSCEP is recommending through ACCS, that the 15 units of Czech organizations have a combined fund-raiser at the SPJST Lodge 84 on Sunday, April 7, 1991 from l p.m. until 6:30 p.m, (The Czech Club has pledged $1,000 of matching funds).

Paní učitelko, toho pána známe!

Chladné podzimní ráno 1942. Jdu rozmrzele do školy. Na každém kroku se setkávám s německou uniformou, vidím míhat se vztyčené pravice, za mnou bijí o dlažbu esesácké boty, do uší zaléhá nenáviděné "Heil!" a já sama nesu v aktovce kus protektorátního prokletí -- přípravy na němčinu.

Vstpuji do školy -- do takové, jakou jsme ji nechtěli mít...Otevírám dveře sborovny -- a žasnu. Po stole, po židlích, po zemi časopis "Běhmen and Měhren" a v něm nůžkami řádící kolegyně.

"Co to děláte!?" ptám se, ač mi začíná svítat. Vidím totiž také červené kartony, na nichž se kolegyně pokoušejí sestavit časovou fotomontáž.

"Schuster je na obzoru," zní trpká a pohrdavá odpověť, "a dostali jsme pokyn sestavit časovosti."

3. května 1991.

"Naši páni jsou vždycky papežštější než papež," povzdychnu si a chápu se nůžek, abych nějaký ten obrázek německých kreatur získala pro svou druhou třídu. Nalepuji Mussoliniho, buším do hlavy Hitlerovi, který ne a ne chytnout a přes "nepřemožitelnou" německou armádu v boji rozmáznu .lepkavý pruh. Při tom posílám zemského inspektora němčiny Schustera ke všem čertům.

Dokončujeme. Časopisy se odklízejí, odstsřižky letí ke koši. Každá učitelka bere svou fotomontáž -­ připravujeme se k odchodu do tříd. Ve sborovně je ticho. Naposledy se prohlížejí fotomontáže nevraživými pohledy beze slov. Jen já, benjamínek sboru, se tiše ptám: "A budete o to (totiž o obrázcích) dětem něco říkat?"

"Ne!" zní současně ze všech úst.

Beru tedy i já svůj karton a jdu do své třídy. Děvčátka vidí, že nesu nějaký obraz, a ačkoliv mohou vidět jen zadní stranu kartonu, provází mě radostně "Jééé ... " "Vy, hlupáčkové, kdybyste věděli," myslím si a s těžkým srdcem zavěšuji karton na zeď. Za mými zády se ozývá dětská bouře radosti a výkřiky: "Vy jste hodná, paní učitelko!"

"Proč už jsme se o tom neučili dříve?" Žasnu a z hloubi duše se stydím za své děti. Přehlížím jejich úsměvy studenýma očima. Trochu štítivě ukazuji na fotografii Hitlera a ptám se: "Vy znáte toho pána?" ·"Ano," zní sborově.

"A kdo je to?" Všechny ruce letí nahoru. Chvíli váhám, koho vyvolat.

Je to konečně jedno. Jméno Hitler zní stejně ošklivě z té jako z té pusy. £'No tak, Evo," rozhoduji se pro drobnou plavovlásku, která se tak horlivě hlásí.

"Kdo je ten pán?" znovu ukazuji na Hitlera.

Evička se staví vedle lavice do pozoru a zašveholí: "To je náš tatíček Masaryk."

Nevěřím sluchu. Na chvíli jsem vyvedena z rovnováhy -- po prvé v kan­ torském životě. Beze slova vrtím hlavou. Děti nevědí, na čem jsou. Ruce jdou váhavě dolů. Jen energická Maruška se nechce nechat zmýlit.

Vstává bez dovolení, jako častokrát, a tvrdí: "Prosím, to je tatíček Masaryk! My jsme ho poznaly podle čepice, víte, paní učitelko, podle 'masaryčky'."

Děti horlivě souhlasí. Mimoděk se podívám na Hitlerovu vysokou čepice -- a nechám děti ještě chvilku věřit, že je to tatíček Masaryk. Pak několika slovy vysvětluji skutečnost. Děti sedí jako myšky -- a výjimečně nemají žádných poznámek, jako na příklad: "Já už jsem ho viděla ... ", "Náš tatíček četl..." a pod.

Teprve když ukazuji na druhý obrázek, ožívají.

"A coš tohohle pána, znáte?"

Polovina rukou letí nahoru. Ostatní děti si prhohlížejí tehdy ještě robustní postavu Mussoliniho v uniformě, v sebevědomém postoji, s hlavou vysoko vztyčenou.

"Ny, Miluško, znáš?"

Miluška horlivě kývne a vychrlí: "Ano. To je náš pan ruský president Stalin -- jenže tady nemá vousy."

Děti jsou spokojeny. Pokývnutí je­ pomalu jednu po druhé rozebíral a k jich hlaviček znamená: · "Miluška ni111 si, zase jen dle svého, odpovídal.

Proč chodím do školy? Jistě proto, uměla." Jenže paní učitelka není s abych se tam učil. A proč se mám učit? ničím spokojena. Vykládá cosi o ltalii To zase, abych něco věděl. A proč a už zas ukazuje nějakého pána. Snad mám něco vědět? Nu, to jistě asi proto, je to pan president Beneš -- ale ne, žádná ruka už se nezvedne, stejně by to abych byl moudrý. A proč zrovna já mám býti moudrým? Jest přece dosti bylo zase špatně. nemoudrých lidí a mají se dobře a jsou Ovšem, děti, byl to tehdy dr. Hácha. zase moudří lidé a žijí v bídě. Proč tedy Tenkráte vás vaše paní učitelka hrozně -anebo, proč mám věřit? Proč si zklamala. A na ty "hezké" obrázky někdo vyvzpomene pohádky o nebi, o jste se ani nedívaly. pekle, o, o .. a chce potom, aby tomu, Jen bych vám přála vidět ten svátek v mém srdci! Děti, naše české děti ne­ kromě něho, každý věřil? To přece je jsou protektorátní!

Narodily se v zbytečná starost a námaha. To učení republice a zůstaly republikány -- i ještě by tak ušlo a mohlo by se někdy k když jim německý jed otrávil první něčemu potřebovati, ale věřit, to ať si věří každý co chce, ale já se tím školní léta. zabývati nebudu. Ať si věří ten, kdo Čí je to zásluha? nemá co na práci, ano, ten, kdo nemá Našich uvědomělých českých rodičů, nebo nechce nic lepšího dělat. -- Práce, kteří věděli, kde a v čem musí nahradit vida, náš tatínek pracuje den ze dne a školu.

Jim patří můj dík a srdečný stisk rok po roku, naše maminka pracuje od rána až do noci -- a proč pracují ... ? ruky!

Frantík se dlouze zamyslil, přemýšlel A vám, děti, nyní již žákyně IV. a uvažoval...Zapomněl v té chvíli na třídy, děkuji za ten nezapomenutelný podzimní den 1942, kdy v německém další otázky. Maminka a tatínek - řádění a běsnění ozvala se z vašich pracují a jemu dostává se ovoce jejich práce, vždyť oni pracují jen pro něho, · pusinek jména: Masaryk, Beneš. všechno mu dají. A on -- Frantíkovi Anna Nováková stékala horká slza po tváři.. .za delší dobu pak usnul, ani nevěděl jak.

Bylo ráno. Maminka měla snídani na stole a divila se, že Frantík ještě spí.

Byli jsme v Jižní Americe. Stany Šla jej vzbuditi. Vzala Frantíka za naše stály ve veliké zahradě a naši koně ruku, druhou rukou pohladila jej po byli uvázáni opodál ke kolíkům. Právě čele. Frantík otevřel oči a vidí když jsme obědvali, přišel sluha, že prý usmívající se maminku. Zdála se mu se koně utrhli, byvše vyplašeni opicemi tak hezká a milá. Vstal. Šel se umýti. na stromech. Jakmile jsme byli po Potom za ruku přivedl si maminku ke stolu a chtě by maminka s ním snídala. obědě, vyšel jsem s ručnicí zahnat opice a jednu jsem postřelil. Ostatní Frantík ptal se po tatínkovi, ale ten byl už v práci. "A co jsi chtěl tatínkovi?", utíkaly, avšak raněná se zastavila, položila si ruku na krvavou ránu a ptala se maminka synáčka, který zdál vztáhla ji ke mně, abych to viděl. Nato se jí dnešního rána nějak podivným ...

Frantík nesnesl maminčina pohledu skonala. To učinilo na mne dojem tak -vytryskly mu slzy z očí, vzal hluboký, že jsem odté chvíle po maminku kolem krku a rozplakal se žadném zviřeti nestřelil. jako nikdy předtím. Maminka plakala Jiří Romanes. s Frantíkem, ani nevěděla proč. Po chvíli doprovázela maminka svého synka ke škole. Právě zvonek svolával děti. Frantík políbil mamince ruku a řekl: "Maminko, já už budu ... Hlas mu , Frantík byl zvláštním klukem. V však selhal, nedořekl a vklouznu! do školních dveří. Maminka zůstala státi noci nemohl spáti, doma chodil jakoby stále něco hledal, ve škole nedával před školou, pro nové slzy ani Proč pláče? , to sama pozor. Nemohl za to a nedovedl si neviděla. pomoci. Zdálo se, že okolní svět ho nevěděla, ale chtělo se jí plakati a proto nezajímá. Žil stále jenom v sobě a plakala. Jenom jako ve snu odcházela jenom pro sebe. Žádný nevěděl co mu a cestou ohlédla se na školu, která schází, nevěděl to ani on sám. Ani na zdála se jí býti tak krásná.

A Frantík? Byl doceia změněn! Od­ to nevzpomněl, nestaral se o to. Sám daval si sam otázky a sám si je také dle poledne šel domů, jakoby našel tisíc svého odpovídal. Už to s ním nebylo k dolarů, ale Frantík toho dne našel více -- našel maminku a tatínka a našel také vydržení.

Jednou seděl ve škole. Nevěděl a sám sebe ...

Za rok a půl po této příhodě konala také nedbal co se děti učí a děti také si ho nevšímaly. Byly už na to tak zvyklé. se v škole graduační slavnost. Tatínek přišel také s Pojednou Frantík jakoby se pro­ překvapil Frantíka, budil. Rozhlížel se kolem sebe a ve maminkou podívati se na toho jejich svém nitru uvažoval: Co ty děti tady kluka. Když principál školy rozdával sedí? Proč se učí? Proč já jsem tady, diplomy řadě graduantů, rohlásil když mohl bych býti venku? Na co je Frantíka za jednoho z nejlepších žáků učení? Což musím všechno věděti? -­ celé školy. Teď byl zase překvapen tatínek, který smával se slzám Nekonečná řada otázek pochodovala ve Frantíkově hlavě, aniž by se byl u maminčiným a který teď sám se jim neubránil. některé zastavil neb se pokusil Frantík zřeknul se svých prázdnin. některou z nich rozluštiti.

Byla prý by to škoda tolik času Té noci nemohl Frantík spáti. Staré otázky se k němu navracely a nové prozaháleti a proto našel si práci, která ještě s k nim přidávaly. Zdálo se, že ho těší a ve které jistě jen samý zdar a Frantík počínal se o otázky více štěstí provázeti jej bude životem!

"Středa" is the day in the middle of the week (middle- střed). "Čtvrtek" is the fourth day of the week (fourth- čtvrtý). "Pátek" is the fifth day (fifth- pátý). "Sobota" has its origin in the biblical Sabbath.

"Neděle" is the day when the Lord orders us not to work (dělat- to work; nedělat- not to work). This explana­ tion of the origin of the words may perhaps help you to remember them better.

In most of Europe, there was one more holiday at Easter- "Pondělí Velikonoční''.- (Easter Monday).

That was the day for gaity. After six weeks of Lent, the time of sacrifice, came Easter Day (Hod Boží velikonoční,) as a day of rejoicing because of Christ's Resurrection, but that still was a day full of deep religiousmeaning- a solemn day. Ad­ ding of another holiday on Monday gave opportunity for more wordly signs of joy. The boys, from toddlers to young unmarried men, were pursu-

ing girls with gaily decorated whips made of young willow branches. The girls could avoid a "whipping" only by offering the fellows fancily-painted Easter eggs. Some were fresh eggs while the more elaborately painted ones were only shells. They were fine examples of folk art. In the Eastern part of the country, the customs called also for practical jokes like pouring of cold water over an unsuspecting vic­ tim, etc. It was not unusual to have a dance on Monday just to give an outlet to the vivacityof the people pinned up during Lent.

Another occasion for a celebration is the Namesday or the Birthday. In this country, one's Namesday is rarely celebrated, but in Czechoslovakia, it is put on the same level as the Birthday.

On the days of popular patron saints, such as St. Joseph, St. Wenceslaus (Václav)or St. Anna, it is not uncom­ mon to have bands of musicians going from one Joseph's house to another and serenading him. Also dances are often organized on the nearest Satur­ day and named Josefská, Václavskáor Annenská zábava. The word "zábava" stands for entertainment, but is often used also to mean dance. On one's Namesday or Birthday, people are con­ gratulated as follows: Všecko nejlepši k svátku- Everything best for your Namesday.

All the above can be preceded by "I wish you" In Czech- "Přeji vám" or "Přeji Ti". The first is the polite and the latter the familiar form. The word "zdraví" stands for health, "štěstí" for happiness, "spokojenost" for satisfaction, "narozeniny" for birth­ day, and "svátek" for namesday. As you can see, the above English transla­ tion of "mnoho štěstí, zdraví a spoko­ jenosti" is not a literal one. Learn the above phrases and use them in greeting those of your friends who know Czech.

They will be appreciated.

Není to ani zvláštní náhoda, jste-li jedním z nich nebo znáte-Ii jich několik. Je dnes stále víc takových chlapců a děvčátek, kteří nemají ani sestřičky.
