For many years science tells us that we live in a world of the mind, and that everything we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel--all of these are purely mental reactions. Your mind is an all­ important factor in your life. It con­ trols your feeling, your happiness-vor your unhappiness as the case may be.

It is your very life.

What one person caus good, another individual calls bad. They may be dis­ gusted with somebody's action, yet he thinks he is doing the right act of duty.

One writes an article which is con­ sidered highly desirable, but other men see it differently.

Long ago Shakespeare said, "There is nothing, neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so. tt How can a person perform a minor miracle from time to time just by thinking? There are some very simple tricks that you may use to improve your outlook on life, to relax your ner­ ves to stimulate your ambition, or to increase your capabilities. These tricks are nothing new. It is only the knowledge of when and how to use the tricks that may be new.

Probably you have doubtless heard the old saying, "Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast. Music may or may not be able to calm a hungry tiger, but science has discovered its often magical effects upon nervously overwrought human beings.

If you are a music lover, this therapy will rarely fail you. When your nerves are taut, and you are sharply unhappy, go to a concert. Or, if you cannot do this, listen to music on the radio, or get out your favorite recordings.

Within less than an hour, your taut nerves will relax. If you are worried, over some keen personal problem, the music will take the edge from your grief. If you are tense, the music will relax your mind so that you become open to new ideas and inspiration.

This isn't theoretical. It has been proved thoroughly through countless experiments. It's a scientific fact!

Everyone has the feeling of wanting a new outlook on life. New courage. A new flood of confidence. Science also says to change your clothes completely inside and out. If you can afford it, buy some brand new clothes, even a single new item of clothing, can give you a complete change of outlook.

In several cases a person wonders: what is the reason for this? It has been well drilled into all of us that one' s ap­ pearance plays an important part in this modern world. A thousand or so years ago, when a man went forth into battle he put on a suit of armor.

Without this suit of armor he felt help­ less, unprotected.

Today your appearance is your modem suit of armor. A man who ap­ plies for a job must appear as attrac­ tive as possible. And the same thing applies to a woman who wants to make a good impression.

The feeling that you are looking your best does something magical to your mind. Even if you haven't been think­ ing consciously about the importance of looking well, subconsciously, your mind knows. It will respond mag­ nificently to your efforts in this direc­ tion.

To effect this miracle it's advisable not only to change your clothes inside and out but to accompany this by a session at the barber shop, or beauty shop.

Within a few minutes, or at most an hour or two, after you have done this, you will begin to experience a new­ born sense of confidence. Your nerves will be more relaxed. Your discourage­ ment will slip away. Theory? Not at all! It's a scientific fact, as dependable as the law of gravity.

Would you also believe that such a simple, easy thing such as going to see a first-rate play or movie could do something extremely important to your mental outlook? It' s true! There' s a sound scientific explanation for it.

First of all, a good show is good be­ cause it's able to completely captivate your interest. The story grips you. You easily fall under its spell. Your mind becomes completely occupied by it.

This isn't true of a bad show, or a mediocre show, but it's true of a good one.

When a person is in trouble of any sort, his mind strains itself to over­ come that trouble. It works overtime.

When no solution seems to occur, the worries become nervous and unhappy.

The mind, given no chance to relax, turns bitter. It's tired and, therefore, ir­ ritable. A good show, by forcing your mind away from its doleful work, gives it rest and change, and refreshes it.

The Insurance Department has acted upon these mandates by conducting the first Home Office training session for new sales representatives. State Field Manager Gene McBride and State Field Representative Jim Wiest conducted the two-day session which consisted of an intense curriculum on life insurance basics and how to apply that knowledge in the field. They also learned about the fraternal aspects of SPJST and how we serve you, the

member, both personally and financial­ ly. They met the Home Office staff and officers.

Continuing education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

SPJST Member Henry Kubala Reaches Age 96 Henry Kubala was born on January 14, 1895. He was the tenth child of Charlie and Frances Kubala of Schulenburg, Texas. At age 20, in 1915, Brother Kubala became a mem­ ber of the SPJST. Brother Kubala joined the Joe Bed­ narek band in 1911 after which fol­ lowed many years of music-making with famed polka bands . such as Adolph and the Gold-Chain Bohemians. Brother Kubala, being musically inclined, played a variety oť instruments as well as the clarinet and saxophone.

In 1917, he entered the armed forces and was sent to France from 1918 to

1919. While enlisted in the service, he was a member and band sergeant in the Ul st Field Artilliery Band, 36th Division. It is fascinating to note that during this time, Brother Kubala took clarinet lessons from Mr. Bouton, solo clarinetist with John Philip Sousa, the march king.

Upon his return from the war, Brother Kubala began farming and on July 28, 1920 he married Emma Hranicky. To this union two children were born; son, George and daughter, Henrietta.

The rich history of Brother Kubala is varied and interesting. We would like to thank him for his faithful member­ ship to our Society and wish him many more years of health and happiness.

Lodge No. 35, Elk Meeting Dear Readers: Our meeting on March 10, 1991 was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearers Jana Breitkreutz and Charlene Stead.

Minutes of our last meeting were read by Treasurer Verna Pavelka. They were approved after one correction.

Treasurer's report was given by Verna Pavelka and approved.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported that following our meeting, the youth cub members will have an Easter egg hunt and prizes to be given for most eggs found and there will be prize eggs given.

Discussed was a cake walk for March 30th and April 7th meeting=a kite-flying contest, king and queen nominees for YAD to be held on June 23rd, and retreat for youth leaders. She reported that Stefanee Callaway, Waylon Callaway and R.D. Easter will be given a certificate for their par­ ticipation in the T-shirt Contest.

Sister Burney said the prizes for Easter egg hunt were donated by Apple Tree. We thank them very much. She also told about a Valentine Party held at Lodge No. 66, which was a lot of fun.

Visitor at the meeting was Lindsey Tlustos, daughter of Wayne and Sally Tlustos of Corsicana. They also have another daughter, Lacey. She is the niece. of Roger and Cindy Easter and cousin of Stefanee, Waylon and R.D.

Birthdays for March were Dawn Pavelka and Edward Pavelka. · We discussed that Muscle Pavelka was doing much better (he had been sick) and that Willie Adamek will be going in for surgery; we wish him a speedy recovery .

New business discussed was that the next two meetings for April and May will be held on the first Sunday of each month because in April on second Sunday is District III spring meeting at Lodge No. 154 in Fort Worth on the 14th and in May on second Sunday is Mother's Day. This was voted on by the members and passed.

Youth Club meeting door prize was won by Tommy Pavelka.

Richard Burney won the door prize at the adult meeting and Lisa Kubitza for the youth.

Louise Burney announced winners of the egg-decorating contest.

All of them were given Easter candy for their prizes and all participants received a bag of candy. The older youth mem­ bers (12 years and older) hid the eggs for their participation. . Lodge No. 47 Honors Sales Representatives The March meeting of Lodge No. 47, Seaton made history by honoring the people who help keep the lodge prosperous -- the sales representatives.

Thirteen of the fourteen sales repre­ sentatives were in attendance to accept the accolades of the lodge members, who took it on themselves to show their appreciation. Lodge No. 80, Holland

On February 23, 1991 we had a beautiful double celebration at Lodge 88. The occasion was Mrs. Mary Johnson, who was 90 years of age and her son, Victor Janak, and his wife were married 40 years. The celebration was put on by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as Evelyn expressed herself.

Victor Janak is the only child of Mrs. Johnson, but Victor and Evelyn have a fine family of 4 children, Victor TI, Tim, Ted and Mary Maas with their spouses Janeen, Carol and John Maas, also the great-grandchildren, Tim, Christina, Michelle, Jennifer and Grant were present.

Mary Johnson is a descendant of Ed­ ward and Hermina Sustala, who came here from Czechoslovakia. Many des­ cendants from the Sustala family were present, also many friends and SPJST members were there for the celebra­ tion.

Tim Janak plays the accordian well, so he did the entertaining with Jennifer Maas, 3 years of age dancing the "Chicken Dance," and she did a per­ fect job of it. She made the show; should have gotten the Emmy Award!

The dining room and the Red Room were beautifully decorated by the spouses. The tier cake was so pretty on the table, and a delicious dinner was catered.

Victor is a successful businessman and has been an SPJST sales repre­ sentative for many years. Evelyn is an RN and is employed at Sam Houston Hospital. They are all SPJST members and Victor told me, they are true fratemalists.

We extend congratulations and we hope you all have many more happy, healthy years.

As usual, to start our meeting, the youth club leads us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, then our presi­ dent asks the secretary to read the minutes and resolutions which is al­ ways sad to hear about our departed brothers and sisters. The president also recognizes visitors which few were present.

We are always glad when new mem­ bers are voted on, this time Bill Adamiki was accepted. Bill and his wife, Bee, never miss our dances, so we are pleased to have Bi11 as a mem­ ber. I am sure Bee will be a member, soon. Our sales representatives keep TAROKY PLAYERS of Lodge No. 92 who traveled in a van to attend securing new members.

We also accepted two transferees, Frank and Josephine Prochaska, from another lodge and we are happy to have them. In fact, they always attend our Czech dances and their table is full with friends and relatives. (Our lodge tables seat 16 persons to· a table, so you see they have a great time at each dance.)

Dan and Ann Zurovitz started attend­ ing our meetings so let's hope they continue to do so.

Our members, who joined not too long ago, donated some very nice cup towels for our kitchen. Brother Leroy and Sister Elsie Davenport seem to be very interested in lodge work so these member are really appreciated.

PARTICIPANTS IN LODGE NO. 92 ADULT BEER HUNT. This being an Easter meeting, Joyce Tesar (our hall manager) had the officers' table decorated very pretty, the other tables had a centerpiece on them with Easter eggs and bunny rab­ bits which everyone thought looked so nice.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: The March 1 Oth meeting was well at­ tended by several new faces, also several youth members were present because they had their day planned for flying kites and an Easter egg hunt.

There were lots of eggs to be found.

I happen to see one small fellow who found several eggs with money in them; of course, these were plastic eggs that came apart so .the money could be placed in most of the eggs. (I suppose, with the cost of fresh eggs and time it involves to color them, this was less work. I also remember while we were young. we would find an egg and then eat it while. looking for more eggs. But, now too much cholestrol isn't good for us. A person sometimes doesn't know what is best for health or cavities from candy eggs.) All in all, the children had lots of fun finding eggs.

Then came time for adults to look for beer the youth hid for us. Some of us were lucky to find at least one, but some found none at all. It was fun looking for beer even if you don't drink it. I was lucky and found three beers. (I hope the pictures I took come out so they can be printed in the Vestnik.) I want to thank many mem­ bers and friends who claim they enjoy reading my letters in the Vestnik.

We had one member, Brother James Greer, receive his SO-year membership pin. Brother Greer met his wife, the former Florence Koci, at our lodge.

Both James and Florence have always been active in our lodge affairs; this time, they were in charge of getting food for members after our meeting.

The food consisted ·of roast beef and vegetables. Brother Greer also sliced the roast beef; he is a butcher with Safeway for many years. The meal was delicious!

Our lodge ladies are to be thanked for their good pastries they donated for this meal. (I know it takes a lot of work baking all those goodies, but one thing for sure-vít is was appreciated by all!)

We have the Ladies' Circle here in our organization who are always donating something for our lodge.

They use our facilities for their meet­ ings and feel like doing something for our lodge; this time their president, Clara Cohen, came to the front of the officers' table during our lodge meet­ ing to present Lodge 92 President Al­ bert Kubala $500 cash money. Lodge 92 members wish to express thanks to

(These ladies have big hearts to do things for us and we can­ not thank them enough.)

The SPJST District III spring meet­ ing will be held at the Eagle Mountain Athletic Center and Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth at 6500 Boat Club Road on April i4, therefore, our Lodge No. 92 will NOT have a meeting on that Sun­ day. We ask our lodge members to at­ tend this district meeting which begins at 10:00 a.m. and a dinner to be served at noon. The meeting will con­ tinue in the afternoon and also some games will be played.

Members, we will NOT have a meet­ ing in April due to District III spring meeting being held on that day. We will also change our May meeting to May 5th due to Mother's Day being on

our regular meeting date so our lodge , mothers and members can spend the day together. Remember, the next meeting date is on May 5th at 2:00 p.m.l Sister Esta Belle Hubenak, who had knee surgery in December, is now walking without the aid of a walker or cane. I hope my friend Leo is also coming along well.

The recent State Tarok Tournament sponsored by SPJST Supreme Lodge, held at Lodge No. 47 (Seaton Star Hall), was a great success with 88 players attending from across Texas.

A member, David Kucera, from Cor­ pus Christi Lodge No. 79 won the top two trophies. We are happy for him and I'm sure his lodge is also proud of him.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth was in the play-offs which captured 6th and 7th places. Joella Kubala and Albert Kubala were winners from our lodge.

All players enjoyed the day playing Taroky and also enjoyed the meal.

There were pastries galore on tables all day for everyone to snack on. Thank you, ladies, of Lodge No. 47 and whoever brought pastries.

While two players were in the play­ off, Lodge No. 47 also had a dance which started at 8:00 p.m., we stayed longer to enjoy the wonderful music of Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. (I hope some day we will have them playing in Fort Worth.) I danced about three numbers with some friends.

Some of us came in an eleven-pas­ senger van (10 players plus our driver,

With the weather· getting warmer, the gardening season is close in order to plant some seeds to be able to harvest some good fresh vegetables. At our home, I try to sneak some seed into the flower beds, but it's hard to have a garden at my place near Bridgeport be­ cause it's too far.

We wish to extend congratulations to our member, Frank Spacek, who is retiring from the Marines after serving 20 years and a few months. He was ready to go serve in Desert Storm in the Middle East but, with the war so close being over, he didn't have to go.

Frank Spacek is the son of our Finan­ cial Secretary Evelyn Spacek. He has been a lodge member for many years and we will be able to see more of him after he gets back to Fort Worth, Texas.

SPJST Lodge Volna Cechie No.135, Ennis Dear Members and Friends: Our February meeting was held on the Sokol property.

A moment of silence was held in memory of Brother Jim Pavelka who passed away recently in Los Angeles, California. Brother Jim was 97 years old. Brother Pavelka spent many years in Ennis and can be remembered as a great Sokol and fraternalist. He was a favorite person to many.

In addition to our regular business, we made plans for our participation in Sokol's grand opening of its Sokol Ac­ tivity Center, April 19-21. The 32,000square foot facility is almost complete and we are all very excited about the opening. We join the Sokol member­ ship in hoping that all Sokols and friends of Sokol will participate in the great celebration.

Only through dedication and hard work has it been possible that, within 15 months of the loss of its facility, the Sokol has been able to plan and build such a facility.

Pearl Hanka read the minutes for Secretary Rita Alexander who had to go to a relative's funeral. There was no correspondence.

The financial report for February, which was very good since the an­ niversary figures from the pastry booth were added in, was given by Lillie Spies.

Mary Kosut had a very short card report.

Those members who were ill are Clara Jecmenek and Delores Condon.

We hope to see you in April at our next meeting. We were so glad to see Margaret Spahr in her place again after a 2-week stay in the hospital with pneumonia.

Ima Lero donated a neck pillow and it was won by Martha Baxter.

The Calcutta game was split between Kathy Trefell and Louise Kadlecek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to our March celebrants, Bessie Dewer, Kathy Trefell and Ann Elzner.

Mary Kosut, our sunshine and chaplain gave the blessing.

President Kim Kacal called the meet­ ing to order. Brian Kutach led the SPJST Youth Club Pledge and Jared Dybala led us in the Pledge of Al­ legiance.

Lisa Reck gave the treasurer's report, collected dues in the absence of our treasurer.

Lisa Reck was awarded first place in her age category for the T-Shirt Con­ test.

Under new business, we donated $25 to ARC for their food booth at the Wharton Youth Fair.

Our District VI spring meeting will be held on April 28 in Victoria.

We decorated an Easter egg for our March project at home and brought it to the meeting .

Bennie and Stacie are the parents of Nancy, their daughter, and their son­ in-law, Marvin Zatopek and Dennis, their son and daughter-in-law, June (Krenek) Kocich. Their pride and joy, of course. are their grandchildren Kerry and Michelle Divin and Shan­ non Divin.

They were married at the Moravia Catholic Church on February 24, 1941.

Stacie gave me the following article that appeared in the paper when they got married 50 years ago: WEDDINGS· (1941) Miss Stazie Rybak became the bride of Albin Kocich, Monday at the As­ cension Church of Moravia. The wed­ ding dance and reception to be given at the Blahuta Hall, had to be postponed on account of bad weather and muddy roads.

How many of you remember that many times we had to stay at home on account of muddy roads?

There were many relatives and friends present, who danced to the Krenek Orchestra. The Polka Club of which Bennie and Stacie are. members were well represented. The grand march was one of the largest I've ever seen -- what a "bash!" and the most delicious food and drinks were served.

The Kocichs are active members of Lodge 88. Both of them are members of the Entertainment Committee for many years, also the Choral Group, and Bennie is very active in the Men's Club.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 91, Crosby on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sin­ cere sympathy to the bereaved family of sister ROSIE STASNEY, 92, of Baytown, Texas, who passed away February 1, 1991 in a Baytown nursing home, St. James House, 5800 Baker Road.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Mon­ day, February 4 at Navarre-Lee Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry W. Loessin officiating.

Mrs. Stasney was born in Ellinger, Texas and spent most of her life living in Crosby, Texas. She has been a resi­ dent of Baytown for the last five years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Stasney and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd and Ann Pohler Stasney of Baytown, Gus and Rosemary Stasney of Kingsville; brother, Albert Franta of Baytown; sister Sidonia Lostak of Crosby; grandchildren, Paige Stasney, Jan Ward, Blake Stasney, Karen Ran­ del and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Sam Houston No. 73, Seymour on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother OLDRICK FOJTIK, who passed away in an Abilene, Texas hospital at the age of 67 years.

Graveside services were held at I O a.m. Thursday at Truscott, Texas cemetery with Bob Wille, minister of Church of Christ officiating. Burial was under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.

Brother Fojtik was born February 25, 1923 in Red Springs, Texas. He and the former Anna Elizabeth Tomacek were married January 29, 1949 in Red Springs. They moved to Knox City in 1964. He was a farmer and paint con­ tractor and served in the Army during World War II.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177 on be­ half of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sym­ pathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother GAYI,ON D. GERNGROSS, who passed away Thursday, March 14, 1991 in a Temple Hospital at the age of 39.

Mr. Gerngross was born in Cameron to Lee and Leola Kuhne Gemgross. He was raised in Rosebud and attended public schools there. He graduated from Temple Junior College and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970-74. He coached in the area soc­ cer and softball leagues.

Brother Gerngross married Carolyn Doskocil on May 24, 1975 in Cyclone.

He had worked for Temple Tag for 14 years as a draftsman and machinist

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple and SPJST Lodge No. 177 in Academy.

Brother Gemgross was preceded in death by his mother and a brother.

Survivors are his wife Carolyn Gerngross of Little River-Academy; a son, Gavin; a daughter, Trina, both of Little River-Academy; and his father, Lee Gerngross of Rosebud.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 16, at 11:00 a.m, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Ar­ thur Michalka officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph' s Cemetery in Cyclone with Sheffield Funeral Home in charge.

Dle·stanov, třetina činných ředitelů se voli při každé výroční schůzi. Rozhodnu to, aby lhúta každého činného ředítele byla· určena losováním. Následek loso­ váni byl tento: Na jeden rok byli zvo­ leni: Ředitelové Kacíř, Hurta, Pavlů, Shiller, Skřivánek, Svoboda a Valčík. Na dva roky: Ředitelově Kučera, Marek, Mi­ keska,·:Pokladník, Šefčík, Škrabánek, a Stehlík. Na tři roky: Ředitelově Klečka, Kleprlík, Nesvadba, Převrátil, Ski'ivánek, Maresh a Plášek.

Dále bylo rozhodnuto, že předseda i místopředsedové budou volení jell na dva roky.

V závěru, tajemník přečetl dopis od pana J. F. Worley,Chief Exempt Organi­ zation Branch, U. S. Treasury Depart­ ment, Washington·25. D. c. z dopisu zní radostná zpráva a to, že dary české Vzdě­ lávací Nadaci Texasu jsou osvobozenyod daně z přijmu. Tato zpráva byla ne jen potěšující, ale též povzbuzující.

Ježto nebylo více záležitostí k proje­ dnání, předseda Škrabúnek poděkoval každému řediteli za jeho přítomnost schůze a vyslovil naději v brzkém us­ kutečnění cíle Nadace.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů Malé ohlédnutí v dějinách šachu

Nekorunovaný král Na podzim nás čeká další zápas Kasparov -- Karpov o titul mistra světa v šachu. To dává příležitost připomenout jejich předchůdce z dávných dob.

Louis Charles Mahé de Labourdon­ nais pocházel ze zámožné francouzské šlechtické rodiny. Narodil se v Saint­ Malo, snad v roce 1797. Také nevíme přesně, jak, kdy a od koho se naučil hrát šachy. Víme jen, že začal navštěvovat tehdy proslulou šachovou kavárnu de la Régencev Paříži a kolem roku 1821 byl uznáván za nejlepšího šachistu Francie.

Neúspěšnými spekulacemi přišel roku 1833 o majetek, a pak se živil jako profesionál šachovou hrou, , kterou kdysijako zámožný člověkpro. vozoval jen pro zábavu. Snad tento 'osudový zlom napomohl zdokonalení .jeho mistrovství. V roce 1834 odcestovaldo Londýna, kde v několika · zápasech porazil všechny přední britské šachistyté doby. Ještě většívýz­ nam mělyjeho zápasy s Angličanem(či . spíš Ir)MacDonneem.

Labourdonnais MacDonnell, nesporně nejlepší šachisté té doby, se utkali v zápase, který se měl hrát na 21 rozhodných partií. Zvítězilpřesvědčivě · Labourdonnais v poměru 16:5 při 4 remízách. Ale ihned po skončení ho · MacDonnell vyzval na odvetný zápas, a protože lu'pálost vzbudila velkou pozornost v Anglii, Francii i v další · zemich, našlo se dost 1· finančních prostředků k pokračování. Byly to ·vlastně první' zápasy o mistrovství .světa, i když titul mistra světa tehdejší

doba ještě neznala. Velká většina sehraných partií se zachovala, byla publikována a pečlivě studována dalšími adepty šachového umění. Lze bezpečně prokázat, že Anderssen, Morphy a další pozdější velcí koryfe­ jové si vybrousili svůj šachový um pečlivýmrozborem partií londýnského zápasu. Je proto možná poněkud nespravedlivé,že životopisy šachových velikánů zpravidla začínají až jmény Anderssen a Morphy.

Vraťme se však k našemu zápasu.

Celkem bylo sehráno 88 partií s výsledkem 44:30 při 14 remízách pro Labourdonnaise. Bylo to vlastně šest zápasů, z nichž Labourdonnais vyhrál čtyři. Třetí v poměru 6:5 při jedné remize, čtvrtý 8:3 při 7 remízácha pátý . 7:4 při jedné remíze. Zápas byl namáhavý, neboť se hrálo každý den i od rána do sedmi hodin večer. Když oba borci skončili partii, začali hrát další. Francouz byl lepší a dobové prameny uvádějí, že promyslel asi čtvrtinu celkového času, zatímco Angličan tři čtvrtiny.

Zápas ve westminsterskémklubu se těšil velkému zájmu diváků; prostředí bylo hlučné, nepohodlné a to byla výhoda pro francouyzského mistra, zvyklého na temperamentní atmosféru pařížské kavárny de la Régence. Ale MacDonnen· si nestěžoval.

Soupeři spolu nemluvili; prostě pro­ to, že nemohli, Labourdonnais neznal anglicky ani slovo a MacDonnell neuměl francouzsky. Jediná slůvka -­ mezinárodní -- , která pronášeli, byla I "šach" a "mat". To poslední vždy s trochu zlomyslnýmúsměvem.

Z řidičů jde strach PRAHA -- Pozor na ěeskoslovenské silnice.a řidiěe. Silnice Jsou ve špatném stavu, řidiěi agresívní, nedbají před­ pisů.

Těchto upozornění se dostává v západních sdělovacích prostředcích lidem, kteří by snad chtěli navštívit naši vlast. Zřejumě právem. V prvním pololetí roku se v zemi uprostřed Evropy odhrálo 60 983 nehod, 812 osob, z toho 50 dětí, při nich zahynulo.

Proti stejnému období předcházejícího I roku tak vzrostl počet nehod o 11 912, l počet usmrcených o 223. Hmotná škoda dosáhla 348,9 miliónu korun.

Nejčastější příčinou nehod je nesprávný způsob jízdy (53,4 procenta), nejvíce lidí však zahynulo při nehodách zaviněných ' nepřiměřenou rychlostí -- 331. Alkohol zabil na silnicích 144 osob -- proti prvnímu pololetí loňského roku o · 111,8 procenta víc! Dvacátá druhá hodina večerní až čtvrtá hodina ranní · jsou zase obdobím opilců -- zaviní až třetinu všechstřetů, které se v tom čase odehrají.

This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some function other than the subject or predicate nominative it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question "what?" The feminine nouns ending in 'a' change this ending to 'u' when used as direct objects.

"Já tě zabiju takhle, takhle, takhle," naznačuje s dětskou vervou snad sedmiletý kluk v autobuse údery na hlavu stejně starého spolužáka s brašnou na zádech.

"A já tebe takhle," nedá se druhý, a teď zase ukazuje on, jakými asi údery (odkoukanými z videa?) lze sprovodit ze světa lidskou bytost.

Z autobusu se náš houf žene ke vchodu do metra a já tak tak míjím levou botou může ležícího na rohovém soklu, obnaženého do pul těla a sladce spícího na složených a parádně tetovaných pažích. Ve vagónu se ani nestačím začíst do článku Klaus versus Komárek, když se nade mnou rozloží parta hned pěti výrostků. Všichni vysocí, dobře živení, módně oblečení, bohužel _ co chvíli drcnou do mých novin.

S tichou kletbou vzdávám spor dvou ekonomických koncepcí a koukám na ty temperamentně gestikulující mládence. Proboha, ještě tohle! Vždyť oni se domlouvají jedině a právě gesty a prsty, žádn-y z nich nevydá ani hlásku ...

Hluchoněmé okukovat nechci, a tak se raději a s úlevou zadívám na slečnu naproti, které převelice sluší opět módní minusukně. Bohužel, ranní trauma je dnes bez konce, téměř vzápětí si všimnu i francouzské hole, opřené o sedadlo vedle její pravé ruky.

S definitivně chmurnými myšlenkami, za které zdaleka nemohou už jmenovaní pánově Klaus a Komárek, vystupuji -- když tu ·náhle do mě zezadu cosi drcne a ten nejvyšší mladík s náušnicí v uchu prostrkává dveřmi dívčinu hůl, zatímco. ostatní horlivě ukazují kamsi za moje záda!

"Tady jste si něco zapomněla," říkám svižně kráčející krásce, když jsem ji na nástupišti konečně dohonil.

"Ježíš, to je pro babičku, ta by mně dala ... ," vypískne, drapne hůl a vzápětí už mizí eskalátorem ke spodní stanici. Vlastně ani nepoděkovala. Ale přesto má svět opět normální rozměry.

Skřípěly brzdy Prozaická mezní situace. Auto v pro­ tisměru je už na dosah a předjížděná škodovka vpravo neubírá plyn. Skřípot brzd. Ještě se snad kapota chvěje, snad dva tři decimetry chyběly ke srážce.

Napjaté ticho se už nedá vydržet.
