SPJST Members Capture Outstanding Performance At ShowTime International

SEMINARHELD AT EL CAMPO-HILLJELODGE

STEPHANIEROYE AND SARA ZORRILLA received top honors at the ShowTime International Dance/Drill Team Competition held in San An· tonio February 22nd and 23rd. The San Antonio Spectacular has grown to be one of the largest dance/drill team competitions in the nation and was held at the Municipal Auditorium and the HemisFair Arena. Of the 27 duets in the competition, Stephanie and Sara were awarded "Duet Cham­ pions" for their outstanding performance to "I WannaBe Rich." In solo competition, the girls each received a first division on their dances. They are officers of the El Campo Derby Doll Drill Team and also competed in Team Highkick, winning a first division; Team Military, winning a first division; and Team Prop, winning a second dtvision. (Stephanie and Sara are members of SPJST Lodge No. 30, Taiton and Stephanie is the 1989-90 SPJST State Queen. Our Societysalutes these beautiful and talented ladies­ ··Editor)

Continuing Education for fraternal organizations is not required by the Texas State Board of Insurance, but to better serve the membership, the SPJST requires its agents to take six hours of classroom education per year to remain in active status.

Sixth Annual SPJST. Tarok Tournament Lodge 47, Seaton was the site for the sixth Annual Tarok Tournament. There were 88 enthusiastic players from 14 lodges and 5 districts representing all parts of the state.

Lodge 47 President Tim Reese and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar welcomed the players and wished them "Good Luck." District II Director Willie E. Kohutek and Dis­ trict I Director Andrew Vavra were also recognized.

After two games were played, a deli­ cious noon meal was served by Lodge 47, Seaton. After the meal, 4 more games were played by everyone and the top 16 players advanced to the playoffs.

Lodge No. 15, Buckholts SPJST Lodge No. 15 of Buckholts held their regular monthly meeting Sunday, March 10 at 3 p.m. with Presi­ dent Gladys Allison presiding.

Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the members and we remained stand­ ing for a silent tribute to our deceased members.

The minutes from our previous meet­ ing were read and approved.

Reports from the Bar, Kitchen and Entertainment Committees were given with profits being made in all areas.

The lodge. will be represented at the State "42" Tournament at Lodge No. 24, Cyclone by two couples, Jack and Glenda Ruzicka, Milton and Jo Lee Shiller.

The members discussed our Rules and Regulations on leasing the hall and barbecue pit.

We have had five members on the sick list with some now able to be at home. Get well wishes go to Leslie Sakewitz, Anton Svetlik, Vlasta Kamenicky, Joe Sevcik and Johnnie Williams.

Our Family Fun Night will be on March 28 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

At our next meeting in April, we would like all members to attend so we can discuss setting details of our lodge picnic.

The youth club thanked Josephine Buri and Millie Linhart for the donations for the youth drawings.

There were no anniversaries reported for March.

Sister Rose Steinman gave a report on the Officers' Workshop that was held in Holland at Lodge No. 80, which was very interesting and infor­ mative. The "Golden Girls," Sisters Mary Renfro, Anna Johnson, Rose Steinman, Jeanie Mason and yours truly attended; had a good dinner and great fellowship.

Next day (Sunday) we went to Ennis to see the progress on the new Ennis Sokol hall and then to the KC Hall to dance with Ernie Kucera; that was wonderful. I got to meet several of my husband's friends from 60 years ago from Megargel, Texas.

On Tuesday, we attended the sales representatives' meeting with Brother Jerry Milan at Lodge 84 in Dallas.

Then on Monday, we attended the appreciation dinner given by the Czech · Culture Society. Sister Bessie Petr's food is always enjoyed by all. So you see the Golden Girls keep on the move. Now back to business.

CHS To Hold Spring Meeting

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its 1991 spring meeting on Saturday, March 23 at SPJST Lodge No. 6 in the Cottonwood community on Farm Road 2114, approximately three and one-half miles northeast of West, Texas.

The lodge hall will open at 10:00 a.m. for registration and fellowship.

Everyone who is interested in Czech history, culture, tradition or genealogy is cordially invited. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring their family histories or other Czech

The largest Slavonic lodge in Texas, with a membership of 7 ,000, recently celebrated the 26th anniversary of the opening of its spacious quarters at 1435 Beall Street.

Lodge Pokrok 88 of The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, also known as SPJST, is one of nearly 200 lodges in the state where Americans with Czechoslovakian roots gather and preserve their ethnic heritage.

The initials SPJST stand for the Czech language version of the brotherhood's name, "Slovanska Pod­ porujici Jednota Statu Texasu." The name Pokrok is Czech for "progress."

Lodge 88 was chartered here in 1910, and its first home was a frame structure at 1411 Robbie Street near 20th and Studewood streets.

The present building on Beall Street, which includes the 500-cápacity Chan­ delier Ballroom, was opened and dedi­ cated on February 21, 1965, said Viola Cox, entertainment chairman of the lodge.

That anniversary is one of the three major events celebrated by SPJST Lodge 88 annually. The other two are Homecoming in June, and Czech Day in October.

The first SPJST in Texas was founded in La Grange by Czech pioneers in J 897, "to help each other and to have life insurance they could afford," said Cox. Central Texas was heavily populated by Czech im­ migrants, and the fraternal brotherhood spread throughout the state.

Lodge 88 was organized by "a hand­ ful of dedicated Czech pioneers who wanted a lodge in Houston," said Cox. The current president is Jerome J. Ermis.

Despite the desire to preserve their heritage, immigrants from Czechos­ lovakia had a strong love for their new country, said Cox. The Czech pioneers, she said, were patriotic, ex­ tremely hardworking and "loved danc­ ing and music."

Perhaps as important as the cultural identity is the family involvement.

Cox, whose husband, Harley Cox, was entertainment chairman for 25 years before stepping down from the post last year, said SPJST has always been for families. · "Our children were brought up going to the lodge and belonging to the youth club, and I think it was very good for them. It's a family type of place. You know where your kids are, and that's a good thing."

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6 Cottonwood Plans Youth Activities Dear Members and Friends, The youth club held their meeting on Sunday, March 3, 1991,with a fair at­ tendance.

They were going to fly kites after their meeting but the wind was too strong, so they plan to fly them on a later date.

The youth brought cakes to West Rest Haven on February 6 and will bring cakes on March 6th.

A Valentine Party was held on February 8 which was well attended by adults and youth members. We had a lot of food and the youth played games and also had a Valentine pinata; all had a lot of fun with it.

Yoath members are making Easter baskets for the rest home.

We are going to have our Easter Party on March 24 with Lodge 6 meet­ ing at 1 p.m., youth club meeting to be held after the lodge meeting; then we will have an Easter program, also an egg hunt will be held and the youth will be divided in the following age groups; O to 4, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12. We will have prize eggs. Bring a friend and all the children so they can hunt Easter eggs.

After the egg hunt supper will be served. Members are asked to bring sweets or salads.

Birthday celebrants for March are Paul Lenart, Tammi Dobecka and Kevin Dobecka.

Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home Organizes Youth Club Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home Youth Club met for the first time January 27, 1991 at the Sweet Home Parish Hall. SYD Claudette Reese and her husband, Tim, presented a slide presentation on the camps and func­ tions of SPJST. DYC Anita Royce and her daughter brought scrapbooks to look over, also.

We made Valentine cards for the sol­ diers in Saudi Arabia. Refreshments were served and youth handbooks were handed out. Eleven youth mem­ bers were present for our first meeting.

On February 25, we held a short meeting to discuss a fund-raiser. We will have an Easter bake sale on Satur­ day, March 30 in front of HEB. On Thursday, March 28 we will meet at the youth leader's home to make cookies, brownies, cake, etc.

We will attend the adult meeting on March 24 at the Sweet Home Com­ munity Center.

I have designated Pamela Zabransky as my treasurer until officers are elected for the new year beginning in June.

I will be attending the Yoath Leaders' Workshop at Camp Tejas on March 15-17th. I hope to be learning many new and wise ideas from the other youth leaders. I will also be having a great view of the camp our youth will be attending this summer.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Held Easter Party On March 6, 1991 Lodge No. 25 Youth Club gathered together for a good old-fashioned wiener roast and everything started-at 6:00 p.m.

After the wiener roast President Brian Holland called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Jake Holland led the pledge to the flag.

The business discussed was about sponsoring a pancake supper (still in question). Also everyone needs to start working on their YAD projects be­ cause YAD will be here before you know it.

Our next meeting will be a "Back­ wards Party." Everyone, including parents, is asked to dress, walk, and do everything backwards. This will all happen on April 3 at 7:00, p.m. Be there for the fun.

The president adjourned our meeting at 7:08 p.m.

After the meeting everyone stayed around for an Easter egg hunt. Con­ gratulations to Chad Scroggins who found the prize egg.

Secretary Nikki Rieger called roll and read the minutes of our February meeting.

Under old business, members were reminded of the tickets we were helping to sell for the May Fete. If anyone needs more tickets there were more left to sell.

Under new business youth club representatives were elected. The memhers elected were Tammy Machu and Darrell Malicoat.

Members voted for Putt-Putt Golf for the March social. This will be on March 23, 1991. Members are to meet at the Mega parking lot to leave for Austin at 1:00 p.m. After playing golf members will be going out to eat.

Youth Club Leader Donna Vanecek reminded members of the District II spring meeting on March 17 in Elgin.

She also asked members to start thinking about things to do for YAD, which will be held on July 14th.

An Easter egg hunt was held after the meeting was adjourned.

Lodge 66 Waco Youth Meeting Our February youth club meeting was held Sunday, February 17, 1991.

There were eleven youth members, one visitor and seven adults present.

We discussed meeting at the hall on February 28 to make Desert Storm yel­ low ribbons and veteran wreaths for the Moody rest home doors. We delivered them on Monday, February 5 at 6:30 p.m. While visiting we met a 100-year-old veteran. He loved to talk about his younger days in the war.

We made Valentine boxes and donated them as door prizes in the adult and youth meetings. Youth win­ ners were Kevin Powell, Jamie Wil­ liams, Sandra and Jamie Trickett, Michael Tierce and Alicia Neslony.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 80, Holland on behalf of the officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of ED MARTINETS, who passed away February 10, 1991 in a Bartlett nursing home at the age of 93.

Services for Brother Martinets were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett. Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery in Holland.

Brother Martinets was a lifelong resídent of the Holland area and a farmer for 25 years. He was a member of the Brethren Church in Holland.

His wife, Lillie Martinets of Holland, survives him.

He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1932.

On August 3, 1937 he was married to Lota Ferguson in Corsicana. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He owned and operated the Bunch Funeral Home in Ennis from 1945 to 1979. He retired January 1, 1979.

Brother Bunch was a member of Church of Christ, American Legion Post No; 361 and IOOF Lodge No. 227 in Ennis.

Suvivors include his wife, Lota Bunch of Ennis; sister and brother-inlaw, Evelyn and M.B. Winstead of Dallas; nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Winstead of Washington, D.C.; and two great-nephews, Patrick and Matthew Winstead also of Washington, D.C. The family received friends from 6 p.m. to .8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

of 13, he went to work at the McBride Grocery Store in Danbury. He was owner and operator of Danbury's first service station, a Texaco station, which he operated for 36 years. Sub­ sequently, be worked for Ace Hardware in Angleton for many years.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a charter member of the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. He was affectionately known as "Mr. Fred" by all his friends.

Preceded in death by his wife, . Lorene Walker Pacheck; a brother, Joe Pacheck; and a sister, Vlasta Pechacek, Brother Pacheck is survived by one brother, O.C. Pacheck of Port Lavaca and 'two sisters, Adela Mitrovich of La Marque; and Bessie Orsak of Boling.

The rosary for Brother Pacheck was recited by Father William Oliver in the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Funeral services were held at St. Anthony's Church in Danbury with Father Oliver officiating.

Serving as pallbearers were Arnold Byrd, Jack Garrett, Jacko Garrett, Vincent Hechler, Robert Peltier and Bill Taylor.

Honorary pallbearers included R. Walker, A. Arnold, M. Gee, E. Shirt and Brother Pacheck's nephews and great-nephews.

Interment was at the Danbury Cemetery.

Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: Cathy Prachyl, Christi Vavra, Danny Vavra, Stephen Prachyl, Michael Prachyl, Leslie Kubin, George, E. Vrla and Lawrence Slovacek.

Sister Vavra was born August 4, 1910 in Alma to Josef and Barbara Hlavac Vrla. She was reared in Alma and Ennis where she attended school.

She graduated from Ennis High School in 1928. On November 3, 1929 she was married to Albin Vavra of Ennis.

After their marriage they lived in Alma. They moved to Ennis in 1947.

Mr. Vavra preceded her in death on November 4, 1990.

Sister Vavra was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge No. 25, and a social member of the KJZT. She served as an election officer for the City of Ennis from 1950 to 1970, as an election judge from 1970 to 1981 and was a former Democratic Precinct Judge.

Survivors include a son, William J. Vavra of Ennis; a daughter, Mrs. Wes­ ley (Dorothy) Prachyl of Ennis; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Longview resident since 1948, Brother Owens moved here from Mar­ shall, Texas. He was married to Oneta Roach on January 2, 1935 in Marshall, Texas.

Wendell was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific and he was a member of VFW Post 4002 in Longview.

He was a member of Longview Mis­ sionary Baptist Church, a 32nd degree Mason, member of Sharon Temple, and member of SPJST Lodge No. 178.

In 1948 Wendell and his wife, Oneta, were the founders of Owens Auto Supply and Auto, Alternator and Gen­ erator Repair Service. Since their retirement, the business is operated by his two sons and two grandsons.: Wendell was loved by his family and many friends for his kindness, wisdom and contribution to his religious belief and the people who he served. He will be missed very much by his com­ munity which surrounded him.

He was a dedicated fraternalist.

He was also a Sunday school class teacher for more than 45 years, a great gardener and outdoor person. Mostly, he loved his gardening and God took him while he was gardening one Sun­ day evening and took him to his . beautiful garden of love in etemity.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth on behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother GEORGE G. CURL, JR., who died Sunday, March 10, 1991 at a Fort Worth hospital.

He was born January 13, 1917 in Monroe, Louisiana. He was a retired Lt. Col., USAF, and a retired evaluator and appraiser for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

He had lived in Fort Worth since 1940. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University. He was a flight in­ structor at Meacham Field before World War II and served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1977, he retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8235, John Knox Presbyterian Church and SPJST Lodge No. 154.

Survivors include his wife, Lelia • Curl of River Oaks; daughter, Taddie Curl Hamilton of Fort Worth; two

During 1940 he accepted a position with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation which then necessitated moving to Austin, Texas which curtailed his ac­ tivities in Sokol until he returned to Dallas, again.

Brother Parma married Dorothy Teague on August 25, 1941 and they were blessed with two fine children, namely: Edward, born on May 11, 1943 and Jeanine on August 27, 1952.

He served as a pilot in the 5th Air Force from April 1943 through December 1945 in the · · Pacific and remained in the Air Force Reserve until December 1961. · Upon returning from Japan in 1945 and settling down in Dallas he, again, became active in Sokol work; first as "cvicitel" (instructor), then three years as president of Sokol "Zizka."

During this tenure as president from January 1956 through December 1959, he led Sokol "Zizka" in selling the old wooden building on Carl Street and the construction of the new steel and masonary Sokol "Zizka" gymnasium

on four acres of land at the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Walnut Hill Lane.

He introduced the innovation of a Board of Directors managing the building and activities outside of gym­ nastics.

The board was composed of ten members; eight from Sokol and two from SPJST. As in the Congress, some were appointed for three years and some for two years to give it a con­ tinuity of thought and action.

Soon Sokols in Ennis and Houston dared to build new gymnasiums. Then, Sokols throughout the nation took courage and also built new gym­ nasiums and the Sokol movement in America was a revitalized step.

Mirek thanks all those who helped him in this great step forward.

Then, he served as "Nacelnik" (head gymnast) of both the "Zupa'' (district) and Sokol "Zizka." He also served four years as president of Southern District. He gave up that office due to pressing problems which developed in his business firm.

Brother Parma was a member of Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) Lodge Jaro No. 130 since October 1941 and of Westem Fraternal Association (WFLA) Lodge 401 since February 1956.

Brother Parma passed away February 28, 1991 and was interred at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.

U.S. Army Second Infantry Division

The city of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia is, once again, preparing to welcome the veterans of the U.S. Army Second Infantry Division, their families and their friends on May 3 through May 9 to help celebrate the liberation of the city of Pilsen, which was liberated by the Second Division on May 6, 1945.

Deputy Mayor of Pilsen, Mr. Jan Blazek, has formed a committee to plan for the celebration and to wel­ come all units which were involved in 1945.

During the past ten months many Czech correspondents have written about our impressive Second Division monument which was erected by the city of Pilsen in the public square, a joint effort by the people of Pilsen and veterans of the Second Division.

Naše minulá schůze, která se konala v neděli 17.února byla dosti dobře navštívená, byl to velmi hezký den, sluníčko svítilo ale nebylo horko jen tak akorát. Bylo přítomno 34 členů a 4 hosté.

President řádu bratr Triliček zahájil schůzi ve 2 hodiny a. jako pokaždé začali jsme přísahou věrnosti vlajce a. pak jsme uctili památku zesnulých členů jednou minutou ticha.

Tajemnice řádu sestra Poppová přečetla zprávy z minulé schůze a vše bylo přijato beze změny. Pak podala finanční zprávy a ty byly také schváleny.

President řádu děkoval bratru Netkovi a bratru Špačkoviza postavení nové skříňky do kuchyňe a všichni členovéje odměnilipotleskem, protože všem se ta skřínka velmi líbila.

Bratr Šimček oznámil že 2. března bude řád Seaton mít Taroky soutěž (Tournament) a 6.dubna bude "42 Domino" ale nevímu kterého řádu, ale to se ho můžete zeptat na příští schůzi.

Sestra Marcella Kleprliková mňe zavolala a omlouvala se, že nemohla napsat poděkování za lednovou návštěvu (sestra Phelpsová a sestra Poppová) kterou Marcellu a Jarku moc potěšila, to víte besedovali jsme český, ona má nemocné oči, pořád jí slzí a tek nemůže vidět na psaní. Já jsem v únoru navstívila Marii Blanářovou, ona je v ošetrovatelském domě "Normandy Terrace"; je to na Rice Rd., vypadá velmi dobře a poz­ dravuje všechnyčleny našeho řádu.

Jenom jeden pár slavil svatební výročí v únoru Emil a EvelynMatula 45 roků; přejeme jim hodňe štěstí a zdraví do dalších manželskýchlet.

Narozeniny v měsíci únoru měli tito bratři a jedna sestra: WilliamPavliska, Josef Stryk, Josef Holub a sestra Mary Kostelniková.

"Split the Pot" vyhráli Bill Mareš a, Annie Stryková. Dveřnícenu vyhráli 1.­ - Josef Stryk, 2 - William Pavliska a 3 - Josef Špaček.

V březnu budeme slavit 74 leté výročí našeho řádu, tak jsme se rozhodli že budeme mít společnýoběd, řád obstará klobásy a nápoje a sestry přinesou příkrm a jejich oblibené zákusky.

Naše březnová schůze byla v neděli 17.března, nejprve společnýoběd ve 12 hodin v poledne a pak schůze.

Krupičná kaše.

Vašíčekpřišel na návštěvu k tetičce.

Celý den si hrál' se svým bratrancem Karlíkem na loupežníky, až nastal večer a tatíčka volala hochy k večeři.

Měli k večeři krupičnou kaši, která jim výborně chutnala, protože pocelodenní honěnici měli pořádný hlad. Po večeři uložila teta hochy ke spaní. Hoši si chvíli ještě povídali a potom ztichli.

Teta myslila, že už oba usnuli, ale tu slyší Vašíka plakat. Běžela hned do ložnicechlapců a konejšila Vašíka, aby neplakal: "Vždyť už jsi přece u nás spal několikráte, tak se ti už stýskat nemusí!" Ale Vašík zavrtěl hlavou: "Proto napláču, tetičko! Ale já jsem si teď teprve vzpomněl, že já krupicovou kaši hrozně nerad jím!"

Lekce Sedmá Lesson Seven Common Expressions Of Courtesy děkuji - thank you prosím - you are welcome (means "please" but used instead of English "you are welcome") rádo se stalo - I was glad to do it není zač - don't mention it "Děkuji" is singular. Sometimes it is as "děkuju." Děkuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "děkujeme." It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "děkuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or "děkuji Vám" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "děkuji" is the word "prosím".

"Rádo se stalo" and "neni zač" is us­ ed similar to ~'I was glad to do it," or "don't mention it," in this country.

Dovolte prosím - with your permis­ sion, (please) pardon me, (please) od­ pusťte (prosím) - excuse me, (please) promiňte (prosím) - Iam sorry- par­ don me nic se nestalo - it was nothing The word "prosím" is the most common courtesy word. The original is, "I beg you" and only from the con­ text can you tell whether the word "prosím" means "I beg you" or whether it serves as ''please".

"Prosím", shown above in paren­ thesis, because its use is optional, mak­ ing it more polite.

The words "odpusťte" and "promiňte" mean practically the same. The informal address would be "promiň" and "odpust" to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a "thou" basis. The "thou" and "you" basis sounds ar­ chaic in English, but there is an impor­ tant difference in the relation between persons whom we address "thou" in Czech "ty" - (the verb "tykati si"), and persons we address "you" in Czech "vy" - and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is "vykati si."

The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi líto" (or "Ja lituji").

The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry", but generally, we can say that "Je mi líto" is used much more spar­ ingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpusťte" or "promiňte".

Nestojí to za nic - It's not worth anything. Špatně, mizerně - bad, miserable "Jak se máte" or "jak se máš" or "jak se vám (ti) daří", is not quite as

common a greeting as in English. ln Czech you ask it when you want to know how your friend is doing and not instead of "good morning". In other words, in answer to "jak se máš" in Czech, you may hear a little longer story than the stereotype "fine, thank you." The European people do not share the American optimistic outlook and more often than not, you may hear an answer more in the form of a com­ plaint. dobré chutnáni - enjoy your meal.

It is very common to wish your guests "dobré chutnání" as they are sitting ready to eat. The same wish is sometimes used among members of the family as they start with their meal.

The literal translation is "good ap­ petite". This wish is very common on the Continent - in French, German, and practically all Continental language.
