Tuesday, February 12th we at­ tended the first SPJST District III Sales Representatives' spring seminar of this year at Lodge Jaromir No. 54 in West at 7 p.m.

District III Director Sid Pokladnik, State Field Manager Gene McBride and State Field Representative Jim Wiest were in charge of the session and it proved to be very educational, instructive and fratemal.

Brothers and Sisters, there is never a time in life that any of us can sit back and say: "I've learned all there is to know about what I'm doing, therefore, why try more study?"

However, there is never a day that passes by when we cannot learn more about any subject and that includes fraternal life insurance!

Recently, your editor read an article pertaining to certain insurance com­ panies that were about to collapse and unable to meet their obligations, finan­ cially and otherwise.

This is one very important fact our members and future prospective mem­ bers should keep in mind about our SPJST -- we have a sound, solid sol­ vent base we operate and have not gone the route of helter-skelter "big­ interest-return" immediate question­ able investments.

Numerous of our members and readers will remember that our SPJST very fraternally let our member-bor- · rowers, on real estate loans, re-adjust their interest to lower figures when in­ terest rates began dropping by paying a very low nominal fee. You do not find many (if any) organizations doing that. This alone shows the fraternal and benevolent nature of our Society, and let us remember all the other benefits we and our youth .are entitled tol Let us try to make every family in the SPJST become a 100 percent SPJST Family!

Let us also help our sales repre­ sentatives secure more members by giving them names of good prospec­ tive members.

Congratulations to the five youth clubs who joined the ranks of the SPJST Youth Department. All those involved at Rowena, Danbury, Hous­ ton-West, Hallettsville and Sweet Home lodges plus the officials who co­ ordinated and assisted deserve praise for their untiring effort. May you find the future activities enjoyable as well as rewarding. Hang in there!

We often tend to forget our responsibilities as citizens. The American Citizenship Committee of the State Bar of Texas has laid down some responsibilities several years ago, which should be studied by every American: We who advocate democracy as the best form of government for an en­ lightened and progressive people, en­ joyng as we do the blessings of liberty under the Constitution of the United States, do set forth this bill of respon­ sibilities as a guide to all citizens for the preservation of individual freedom and democratic government.

I. It shall be the duty of every citizen to render undivided allegiance to the Constitution of the United States, to work for its betterment and perpetua-

tion, to respect the sovereignty of the people's government, and to defend the Nation against all its enemies whomsoever.

II. It shall be the duty of every citizen to be familiar with the Con­ stitution of the United States and to be informed as to what rights and liberties are his and to use these rights in such manner as is consistent with his own welfare and the welfare of his fellow citizens.

III. It shall be the duty of every citizen to defend with his life the rights and liberties granted to him and to his fellow citizens by the Constitu­ tion, to obey the laws of the land and aid in their enforcement, and to oppose vigorously any persons whose inten­ tion is to transgress the law or to op­ press the rights of others.

IV. It shall be the duty of every citizen to make honest, wise, and courageous use of the free and secret ballot at every election; to exercise freedom of thought, speech, and wor­ ship; to protect the freedom of press; to safeguard the right of trail by fury and to render willing jury service when called upon; and to perform all other acts conducive to the perpetua­ tion of the rights set forth in the Con­ stitution.

V. It shall be the duty of every citizen to protect and sustain the un­ written liberties and rights vested in him by custom and usage and to per­ petuate the ideals of the equality and dignity of the individual, upon which the Constitution is founded.

VI. It shall be the duty of every citizen to be active in the political party of his choice, and to be vigilant of the public officers, to render aJI possible aid to them, and to serve in public office by appointment or elec­ tion when qualified and called upon to do so. It shall be his duty to strive for the selection of public offices and ability and upright character; and when holding public office, to serve in such manner as will subordinate private or minority interest to those of the people at large.

VII. It shall be the duty of every citizen to achieve the highest prac­ ticable level of education and to work for the advancement of education by supporting and improving the public schools and by fostering the desire for education among his fellow citizens.

VIII. It shall be the duty of every citizen to defend the right to buy and sell, to own land and other property, to engage in commerce, and to work and earn a living wage, as a fundamental guaranty of the freedom and welfare of the Nation.

IX. It shall be the duty of every citizen to instruct his children in the principles of freedom and to spread the ideals of democratic government at home and abroad.

X. It shall be the duty of every citizen to preserve an attitude of self­ reliance, and to use all legitimate means to achieve financial inde­ pendence and security; to practice thrift and economy in bis own affairs and to require the same of local, state, and federal government.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Readers: Our meeting was held February 2nd.

President Johnnie Krizan presided at the meeting. Tammi Dobecka led the membership in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.

Sister Lydia Dobecka reported 21 members present for our meeting.

All reports were given and approved.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz reported the youth made Valentines during January. They donated clothes to Goodwill. They went skating. They had a Valentine Party on February 8th.

March .15-17 will be Youth Leaders' Training. On March 24 will be our Easter Party. The youth will be selling tickets and they are also selling knives and cards. · Birthdays in February are Danielle Kroll and Celia Dobecka.

Sister Willie Mae Schuetz sent an an­ niversary card to Brother Cyrill and Sister Christine Svrcek for being mar­ ried 55 years. Congratulations! A sym­ pathy card was sent to the Brother John Skerik family.

Brother Robert Dobecka, our frater­ nal affairs coordinator, asked Sister Peggy Dobecka to read his report.

Brother George Straten gave the trustees' report. The trustees set our April meeting for March 24 with our Easter Party that day. On March 23 the Czech Heritage Society will have their state meeting at Lodge No. 6, and trus­ tees voted to let them have the lodge rent-free. .

The Board of Trustees elected their officers, namely: Chairman=George Straten, Co-Chairman=Raymond Marek, Secretary=Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer=Johnnie Krizan.

Brother Robert Dobecka reported the lawnmower has been ordered. The trustees discussed buying a microwave for the kitchen. No decision was made.

Lodge No.17, New Tabor Dear Members: New Tabor LodgeNo. 17 held its regular monthly meeting on February 3, 1991 with all officers present.

FAC Clarence Sefcik reported that the "straight" domino tournament was held February 2nd and that Betty Suehs and Donnie Paul won first place, Gary Zwerniman and Dennis Drgac won second place, Gladys Hejl and Carol Petty won third place.

Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek reported that the youth will hold a

"Salute to the Troops" on March 9th at 4:30p.m.

On March 9th, New Tabor SPJST and CSA will host a chili supper, but activities will start at 1:00 p.m. with a turkey shoot inside the hall, table games and also outside a horseshoe tournament.

We will also have a cake walk in­ side; to donate cakes, call Martha Trcalek. To find out more about the activities on March 9th, call Clarence Sefcik.

Dear Readers: The February meeting was called to· order by President LaVerne Cabla with all officers and board members present.

Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for our deceased member, Morene Nacas. We were sadden to hear that one of our members, Brother L.B. Haisler, passed away during our meet­ ing; we extend our deepest sympathy to the family.

Those members recognized on the sick list were Anita Lesikar, Clarene Pechal, Carol Chervenka and David Macek. We hope everyone gets well soon.

Birthday celebrants for February are Jeffery Posvar, Tracey Jo Chervenka, Adam Bruggman, Danny Baker, Bill Smetanka, Joan Coots, and Gary Kelárek, Celebrating an anniversary on February 14th were Carol and Johnnie Chervenka.

The chairman of the various commit­ . tees passed out their monthly reports and discussed them.

Social Games Chairman Carol Cher­ venka resigned her position; there was much discussion on whether to con­ tinue or do away with the games.

Margaret Mikeska made a motion to discontinue social games. The motion was seconded and passed.

I would like to take this time to thank who worked with the social games and helped make it the success it was. A big thank you to Carol Cher­ venka for being our chairman and doing a wonderful job.

The lodge will hold its local straight domino playoff on March 2nd at the hall. For more information contact Bill Smetanka. The State "42" Tournament will be held on April 6th at Flag Hall.

The board report was given by Nancy Posvar.

Shirley Ashcraft reported on the youth club. Shirley an-. nounced that the Youth Leader's Workshop will be March 15-17 in La Grange.

Members decided to hold the 50-year pin awards on July 21 which will also be our monthly meeting on the same afternoon. There will be more informa­ tion on this later.

Door prize winners were Arleen Tschoerner and Ray Coots.

Dear Members: The time has come for another monthly meeting for Lodge Karel Jon~l This third meeting of the year will be held on Sunday, March 3rd at 2 p.m. The location of the meeting site is at question at this writing for all depends whether or not the room downstairs at l 06 Leveridge will be · ready. If things will go according to schedule it will he held there, other­ wise, the meeting will be held upstairs in the lodge hall. The agenda will have a report from the officers' workshop in Holland, the Audit Committee report, along with any other items needing im­ mediate attention.

A fraternal hour with its light lunch­ eon is scheduled lo start after the busi­ ness meeting adjourns.

Sunday, February 3rd, the monthly meeting convened on time with better attendance than the January meeting.

An Audit Committee was elected and the report is scheduled for the March meeting. All other business was hand­ led as swiftly as possible and reports were accepted as given.

With Sisters Craig, Haverda, Kasmir, H. Kelner, Kortis and Sontag along with Brothers A.J. Kelner. Kubina and this writer donating the food and refreshments, the buffet table was full whereby the lodge did not have to spend any funds. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

On another subject: The Czech Na­ tional Cemetery Association will hold its first bi-annual meeting of 1991 on Sunday, March 10th at 2 p.m. either in the SPJST Hall upstairs or downstairs depending on the number of persons attending.

Lodge 47 Seaton To Recognize Its Outstanding Sales Force On March 3rd Lodge 47, Seaton will be honoring its sales representatives during the regular scheduled lodge meeting. The membership is very ex­ cited about this opportunity to recog­ nize the importance of all volunteer sales representatives and its efforts to increase the membership of the lodge.

The sales representative will be honored for most premium return and most new certificates for the year en­ ding 1990. A plaque will be presented to the individual(s) and a lodge plaque enscribed with the name(s) will be per­ manently displayed in the lodge.

I would also like to remind any lodge members who are interested in taking part in the SPJST State Tarok Tourna­ ment on March 2nd that they need to get their $5.00 in to the lodge and let me or State FAC Frank Klinkovsky know they will be playing.

Werner with us. She had just returned from a stay in the hospital; in fact, Mary has had major surgery and two subsequent hospital stays without missing a single monthly meeting and has kept up with her secretarial paper­ work.

Under old business, it was decided that President Macha will contact the Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir concerning some legal aspects of loaning out wheelchairs and convales­ cent items.

Under new business, members voted to reduce the number of Lodge No. 81 student scholarships from four to two to be given during the 1991-92 school year.

At the April 21, 1991 meeting we will honor our eight 50-year members.

We welcome Paula S. Follett of Lake Jackson and Kalynda Follett of Dallas as new members of Lodge No. 81.

Purchase of a microwave oven for the lodge kitchen was approved.

Sister Marie Stayton, youth coun­ selor for District V, gave us informa­ tion and entry forms for the 1991 "Mr. and Miss SPJST" Contest. She also told us of the benefits that a local youth club can bring to both the lodge and its youth.

District V President Evelyn Mikeska extended an invitation to attend the District V spring meeting to be held at the VFW Hall in Katy, Texas on March 10, 1991. Lodge No. 196 will be the host lodge.

Congratulations to Charlie and Mary Matcek who observed their 50th wed­ ding anniversary on February 25, 1991. A reception in their honor was held at the lodge hall in Needville on Saturday, February 23, 1991.

Two couples observing wedding an­ niversaries on Valentine's Day were Edwin and Winnie Susan (49 years), Vincent and Louise Newman (48 years).

Young members of Lodge No. 81 making the honor rolls at their schools were Clinton Jablonski of Rosenberg, Jason Vallet, Bradley Vallet, Cheryl Newman, Amanda Newman and Lyn­ nette Newman of Needville and Aman­ da Pekar and Lisa Pekar of Damon.

The regular monthly meeting of Lodge No. 81 was held in Needville on Sunday, February 17, 1991 at the lodge hall. At 12:00 noon, thirty-five members and guests enjoyed a deli­ cious dinner and fellowship. The lodge provided the main dish of roast beef and gravy which was prepared to per­ fection by Sister Benita Walzel. As usual, the sisters of the lodge provided a variety of tasty side dishes and des­ serts to complete our menu. Our thanks to Benita and all the members who prepared and brought the good food.

At 1 :00 p.m, President Adolph Macha called the business meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Al­ legiance to the flag, led by Vincent Joe Newman, we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our two departed members, Brothers Odell Michalec and Darwin Jurchak. Our sincere sympathy is extended to their families. May our brothers rest in peace.

President Macha welcomed our guests, Brother A.J. and DYC Marie Stayton from Lodge No. 88 and Dis­ trict V President Evelyn Mikeska of Lodge 196. Please come back to visit with us, again.

All local officers were present for roll call. Minutes of the January meet­ ing and the financial secretary' s minutes were read by Willie Mae Kuykendall for Secretary Mary Werner and accepted with one minor change.

Treasurer Willie Mae Kuykendall' s report was accepted as read. Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel's monthly report was also ap­ proved.

Correspondence received included a thank you note from the family of Marion Zapalac and a letter from the Supreme Lodge informing us that Lodge No. 81 will have eight members receiving their 50-year pins this spring. A reminder of the upcoming March 1 O District V spring meeting in Katy was also read.

Brother Gilbert Walzel read the monthly schedule of events booked for Members of Lodge No. 84: the hall. Lodge No. 88, Houston News On February 11, 1991 we had our monthly meeting. President Jerry Ermis convened the meeting at 7 :30 p.m. with Bill Malina, in honor of our soldiers in the Persian Gulf, presented a Flag Ceremony. Our Flag Bearers Darlene and Marlene Migl and Michelle Linney presented the U.S., Texas and Czech flags, which were all placed in their respective places, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Bill Malina read a beautiful poem about our flags, which laid heavy on our hearts. So many of us have not for­ gotten World War II and nearly all of us were involved in some way, and now we are facing the Persian Gulf War, again. It's heart-breaking to think our fine young men and women are having to break-up their homes and families.

The minutes were read by Vice President Marceil Malak, since our Secretary Mildred Holeman wasn't

present due to her son's illness. We hope and pray that God will take care of him, if it' s his will. Marceil also read correspondence from Margie Anders, who suddenly became ill two weeks ago. Margie is doing fine now and we are all pulling for you.

We initiated one member, Gil Matt.

We are delighted to have such a nice young man to join us because we cer­ tainly need you, and I understand he has offered to join the Choral Group and possibly the Drama Club.

President Jerry Ennis commented on our 26th anniversary celebration on February 10th. We had a fairly good crowd and the dinner was very good.

After games from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Ray Jurecka's orchestra from Weimar played for the dance.

FAC Homer Alexander gave a good report on all the work his job entails.

He collects eye glasses, cJothes for children, especially; although he col­ lects clothes for anyone. Then on February 28 and March 1, he will have bis Defensive Driving Course from 9:00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m. each day; call Homer to see if he has any vacanies, if not, he '11 put you down for the next class. Homer also thanked Ed Zientek for the 268 sets of eye glasses that Ed collected at different places. People who can't afford glasses are very thankful for them because it must be a blessing to be able to see again through someone who "cares."

Financial Secretary Shirley Stonaker gave the annual report for 1990 and then for January 1991. They were good reports and we were happy to hear all these pleasing figures.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney gave a report on our youth. We are so proud of Barbara because she does a tremedous job with these young boys and girls. She has the children's respect and that does count. Barbara also thanked Rosalee Kostom and Lowrina Lindemann for refurbishing the Youth Room, which was a difficult task. Many of the items they found were out-of-date, and useless. "What do you suppose they did with that?"

Barbara also commented on our Christmas program in 1991 -- that seems far-fetched, but everyone knows how time flies. Anyway let's get to the point. Our Children's Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 1 this year. She also announced that the youth will not go to the rodeo this year; instead, they've decided to go some place else because Louis Hanus suggested: "Let's go to the zoo, he'd like to go." Louis always goes with them. Barbara said they would also have an Easter Party on March 23rd.

The youth have a wonderful project going for our Scholarship Fund, which is so profitable --- collecting cans.

Entertainment Chairman Viola Cox gave her report for January, 1991, which was a fairly good month. It's too late to report the February dances, but March 2, Central Texas Sounds will play polka and variety music, and on March 9 is a polka battle dance with Vrazels and The Polka Dots.

Viola said that Harley was booking bands for 1992, and the first band he engaged was Eddie Skeets who had called Harley and gave him a Saturday night, January 11, 1992 date.

Do check on the second to the last page (page 15) in the Vestnik for all the March dances. Also, there is a blue schedule available at our lodge, which gives all the dances through June.

Lynn Pflughaupt reported for Joe Miksch, who is in charge of the bar.

He thanked everyone who helped him in the anniversary celebration.

Kitchen Chairman Annie Vala also thanked everyone who helped her.

Wednesday, February 27, 1991-VĚSTNÍK/9 Birthday Club President Lowrina Lindemann thanked all the ladies who brought the delicious pastries; also thanked Lillie Spies, who was in charge of the pastry booth and all those who helped her. The pastry booth was so beautiful -- really a sight to see.

There was no report from Brother Ed Miculka about the Men's Club. He usually has a very interesting report.

Those men need to be praised for all the work they do that makes our Lodge 88 Hall presentable. My cousin from San Antonio visited me last Sunday, so we went to our lodge for the anniver­ sary celebration. She walked in the front door and stopped, then looked at her son and said she wished that place was in San Antonio -- how beautiful!

Board Chairman Karl Lindemann gave a good report. He itemized some things the board members are doing.

First, the gazebo has to be renovated, which is on the way, also parking lot will be fenced in, and that is under­ way. Of course, there are many other things that have to be repaired.

Dramatic Club President Bill Malina has September 29, 1991 reserved for some sort of entertainment, such as skits, etcetera. We have been unlucky with long plays lately, so the club decided to change this procedure, and try something else.

Choral Group Director Tim Kostom announced for the group, all the engagements they have accepted. The first one is the Czech Fest in Corpus Christi on March 2nd. The Texas Polka Awards Festival is scheduled for March 15-17 in Bell County Expo Center in Belton in which the Choral Group and the Czech Concert Or­ chestra will participate. The Rosen­ berg Czech Fest will be on May 4 and they are really looking forward to that, because the past 12 years our groups have participated. Be sure and mark your CALENDARS NOW, so you won't forget.

Mary Kosut reported on benevolence for December. We have many mem­ bers who are volunteering their time at hospitals, retirement homes and other functions pertaining to Lodge 88.

Our dear friend, Wm. Souchek, has a Czech class, again, which started on February 18 with 43 members enrolled at present. You can't retire!

Our. sick members are James Holeman, Harry Rice, Margaret Spahr and Jeanette Raymond. We are looking forward to seeing all of you back in our midst, soon.

District V Director Louis Hanus gave us some information about the decisions made at the meeting in Temple.

District V President Evelyn Mikeska announced our District V spring meet­ ing for Sunday, March 1 O at Lodge 196 in Katy, Texas at the VFW Hall on 6th Avenue and "D" Street. Serving of barbecue and sausage will start at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with $4.00 for adults and $2.50 for children. She is asking those who can, to bring a des­ sert.

DYC Marie Stayton had a short report. She's very pleased about new youth clubs; one at Danbury Lodge 139, and one at Houston-West Lodge 196 at Katy. She was so happy about this accomplishment and would like to see the youth advance to regular active lodge members, who attend meetings and learn about the work at the lodge.

We need young members.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Today is Ash Wednesday so it meant, besides going to give Com­ munion to the nursing home, I had to give ashes to the Catholics who are staying in the homes. Every Wednes­ day I go to visit and spend a little time with the people at the rest homes. I visit four nursing homes which is counted as fraternal work. All the people in these rest homes really enjoy it when someone visits with them. If any of you have extra time, try to visit with them sometimes. We never know when we could be in a rest home and want someone to visit us.

February 14 is Saint Valentine's Day and wherever you look there are red hearts and flowers. Cupid is something that reminds us to send candy or flowers to our wives or husbands and/or sweethearts. (However, if I gave my wife flowers she might think I did something wrong; just kidding.) I gave her flowers and candy at times.

Our Valentine dance was nice with quite a few present. The hall was real­ ly decorated beautifully, Joyce Tesar does a wonderful job decorating for different types of activities and a lot of people admire her for the way she decorates.

Any time you need the hall for a wedding or some other occasion, she will decorate the hall for you. Of course, there is a small charge for it.

We have one of the best dance floors in this area. Some of you may not remember, we built our building in 1938 and we kept it up nicely to make you think it' s like new. Ever since the fire we had some time back, we closed up the windows with brick and plaster which keeps our building warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The trustees are now in process of putting a handicap ramp with rails in the front entrance for people who can­ not walk up the steps. There are other items to be fixed or added to the inside of the building structure.

Our last meeting lasted a little longer due to us not having a meeting in December and the January meeting was cut short due to a dance scheduled at 3 p.m., therefore, a lot of business was discussed in our February meet­ ing.

Secretary Christine Zich takes good minutes and also read quite a few cor­ respondence items which had to be ap­ proved.

Financial Secretary Evelyn Spacek had a report pertaining to mailing out several notices about lodge dues, so, if you received one she will be waiting for your payment. She also included how many members we have in · our lodge.

FAC Helen Kubala explained our game nights, and the state tournament which will be held for Taroky players sponsored by Supreme Lodge in Temple. There will be trophies given to the top four winners which is for SPJST members, only. This event will take place March 2 at Lodge No. 47, Seaton Star Hall. Taroky will be played all day.

Our Lodge No. 92 will be well repre­ sented. I believe 20 or more will be going and we intend to win the trophy for our lodge. Prizes will be given at each change of tables.

I just came from the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association meeting in Rosenberg, Texas and saw in the newspaper that our member, Lexine Parham, passed away; her maiden name was Lexine Bartek. She was a long time member of SPJST. I don't know if any of you can tune in the Hillsboro, Texas radio station; but, if you try, tune to Number 1560 AM on your dial and right on that number you can get the American­ Czech Hour which is hosted by our Editor Rudy Sefcik. We can tune in the station in our home and our daughter, Shirley Ann, really likes it. This radio program is aired every Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:55 p.m, Rudy, we enjoy your program very much!

On February 13, 1991 the Birthday Club met for our regular monthly meeting.

President Lowrina Lindemann called the meeting to order at 11:15 a.m. with a roll call. The attendance was very good and the weather was perfect.

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes which were approved.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the finan­ cial report, and graciously thanked the ladies who helped her in the party booth on February 1 O; they were Carol Liebscher, Liz Blahuta, Ann and Tootie Lacina.

Secretary Rita Alexander also read the correspondence from Lillie Spies' niece Eileen Shelander who had to resign from our club due to her mother's health, and a letter from Youth Leader Barbara Linney, who thanked the ladies for their help.

Pearl Hanka stated that she had a let­ ter from Frances Dvorak who was doing fine.

Our members who are ill or have been ill are Mary Ehret, Margaret Spahr and Ann Elzner. I'm happy to report that Ann is back home and doing better every day. We really miss Margaret Spahr because she attended regularly.

I must mention our ticket drawing which will take place on June 2, 1991, on Homecoming and Splash Day. We have some beautiful gifts. I'll name the major ones; vacuum cleaner, microwave, coffeemaker, a queen-size comforter and we'll have more. We are selling tickets 3 for $1.00. We hope everyone will help us out. Willie Mae Ennis is the chairman of this commit­ tee and she has tickets to give to whoever wants to sell; also Pearl Hanka, Rita Alexander and Lillian Finn are on this committee. Willie Mae will need help whenever, we sell at different functions, so do offer to help.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut gave the card report and gave us the names of the sick.

We are planning a dinner at some restaurant in the near future. Many places were named, but finally decided to have a committee to select a place; Helen Hegwood, and Virginia Hale are on the committee.

District V meeting at Katy, Texas was again talked about, it's on Sunday, March 1 O with a barbecue dinner; salad and dessert are brought by people who attend.

Kathy Trefell stated that the hostes­ ses have to serve from the steam table­ --thať s orders from the Health Department.

The Calcutta game was won by Lillie Spies, and the other half was split be­ tween Helen Hegwood and Virginia Hale.

Ima Lero's neck pillow was won by Jo Buri. Lowrina Lindemann's fruit basket was won by Martha Walla.

Our meeting opened February 5th with President Louis Grochaske presiding. A moment of silence was held for our departed members.

Due to bad weather and other com­ mitments, there were no meetings in December and January. The minutes of the November meeting were approved as read.

We are heartened by the attendance at our dances which have been almost full houses.

A discussion was held on the condi­ tion of the plumbing and bath rooms, which needs some repair.

On the sick list we wish a speedy and full recovery to Mydell Grochaske, Joe Janecka, Frances Simmank and Ida Myer.

Used Eye Glasses For A Good Cause Some sti11 ask: "Homer, do you still collect used eye glasses? My answer -­ "Sure do."

As each one knows and as Vestnik articles in the past have stated the need is ever-existing for those indigent per­ sons who are unable to purchase same.

For each pair of used glasses turned in by Lodge No. 88 to the Houston Eye Center an "Eye Card" is issued to one of these persons who may obtain a free pair of prescription glasses.

This is one of the many benefits of­ fered by Lodge No. 88 to the local citizens of the Houston area.

Some of the more recent donors con­ tributing to this program are: Vic and Doris Beran, Mike and Kathy Trefell, Barbara Linney, Mary Quider, Bob and Ruth Martinák, Pal Mae Hilsher, Jerry and Willie Mae Ermis.

More than 2400 pairs of used eye glasses have been donated to the Hous­ ton Eye Center since the start of this program in August 1986.

We Were, We Are And We ...???

A short time ago, it was announced that the Chair for Czech Studies at the University of Texas at Austin became a reality. What that means is there will be no questions, as to how many stu­ dents want to learn Czech, because, if there is but one studem of the Czech language and history. Czech will be taught as long as interest in Czechos­ lovak studies continues.

This is very impressive news to all "Nasincum" who supported this project. Since the goal is to get the

I was informed there would be a big ceremony this spring at U.T. Austin.

So everyone please try to help this cause so that a complete success is possible. It could be proof to the old proverb -- . "Where there's a will, there's a way."

Because of our past neglect in keep­ ing the Czech language alive, we now need to protect it for the future. How­ ever, in today's time it is becoming in­ creasingly difficult, and soon we will not be able to claim that our minority still exists.

It's a sad fact that except for Czech titles, names, societies, organizations, etc., the Czech language was so ig­ nored. History attests to the fact that not only English teachers, but, also Czech parents tried to prevent children from speaking Czech. That was a big mistake and betrayed our heritage.

Look around and notice how more and more the Mexican minority practically forces Spanish everywhere -- in schools, offices, businessess even churches.

In recent years how many of the "newcomers" sought out the Czech centers to find a familiar environment but disappointed they became like Robinson Crusso among one of the biggest Czech minorities in America.

Many of the Czech leaders or directors of Czech organizations should know at least a little Czech so that our people are not forced to speak English in a Czech center. As was told to me more than once by persons with Czech names, that: "You live in Ameirca ... !

Last year when I was teaching Czech (and I hope I will teach again, soon), many of my students found it interest­ ing that some of my words or phrases brought back memories of their youth when they heard those same expres­ sions used by their grandmothers and grandfathers. Subconsciously. they en­ joyed hearing words which were familiar.

Thanks to everyone who taught, or is still teaching Czech --- a little is better than nothing at all. The only thing which can help the young, who go on to study Czech at U.T. is the little knowledge of the Czech language they receive from home or from those who are still proud to use Czech. The knowledge of the Czech language helps people in doing business with Czechoslovakia or participating in stu­ dent exchange programs or joining the student groups which go to study in Prague or Brno every year.

I personally was offered several busi­ ness and investment opportunities in Czechoslovakia. If anyone would like some additional information regarding these opportunities, please contact me.

Thanks to each and every donor in helping to create this Czech Chair at U.T., but please do your best to sec, that the Czech language is supported and heard where you live and where future students live, so that the one million dollars will not be thrown down the drain by our carelessness and become a gravemarker of our Czech heritage.

The question mark in this letter's title means. that it is the responsibility of all of us to see if we become either the undertakers or the descendants of a nation, which still exists even after weathering storms over one thousand years.

The meeting opened with aJl present singing God Bless America. Yellow bows and tiny flags were given to everyone.

Reading of the minutes and treasurer's report were approved after corrections, Under new business, Florence Greer made a motion that the Ladies Circle give a donation of $500.00 to the Na­ tional Hall to be used wherever needed. Motion was seconded and ap­ proved. Members also agreed to donate cup towels for the kitchen.

Sunshine Committee reported on get well and sympathy cards sent to mem­ bers last month.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to mem­ bers born in February.

Hostesses for March are Merle Kovar, Pauline Morbitzer, Aurora Mal­ dino and Louise Oujesky.

Frances Blake read a humorous story and put everyone in a happy mood to enjoy the delicious food and games afterward. Thirty-seven ladies and ten men were present.

Friendship Club Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting was moved to the Sokol Club at the · last minute. A special thanks to Geneva Hennessey and Rosemary Gribble who helped me to notify the members of the change.

The meeting was called to order by our President Jo Prochaska. She led us to the Pledge to our flag and prayers for our troops in service. Several of our members have family who are in the service. We hope and pray it will be over soon.

Our guests, Jewell Clark and Mark Petets were made welcome.

We had 31 members and the two guests present and everyone seemed to be in a happy mood.

Minutes read by Secretary Merel Kovar and Treasurer Lydia Alborn 's report were approved as read.

Sunshine Chairperson Anna Johnson didn't have anyone on the sick list, but Rose Steinman has been down for a week and still recuperating with the flu, I was down a few days, Jeanie Mason had a few bad days and I hope to one and all that we didn't hear about, that you get well, soon.

Merel Kovar read thank you notes from St. Theresa's Home and Father Salvator for their Christmas donation.

Jo Prochaska announced a donation was given to Sokol for the use of their club. ·· Hostesses were selected for the year.

Nettie Naugle, our visitor at the last meeting in December, is now our new member and she was made welcome.

Everyone seems contented with what we are doing, so we will strive for a good 1991.

Roy and Lydia Alholm left for Las Vegas to meet Roy's brother from Washington state and his nephew from California. We know they will enjoy

their visit and fun--"Good Luck!"

CHS To Hold Spring Meeting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its 1991 spring meeting on Saturday, March 23 at SPJST Lodge No. 6, in the Cottonwood community on Farm Road 2114.' approximately three and one-half miles northeast of West, Texas.

The lodge hall will open at lO:OO a.m. for registration and fellowship.

Everyone who is interested in Czech history, culture, tradition or genealogy is cordially invited. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring their family histories or other Czech memorabilia for display during this hour.

Robert Janak, of Beaumont, will present a family history workshop at 11 :00 a.m. Mr. Janak has extensively researched the history of Texas Czech immigrants in Texas and their roots in Czechoslovakia. The workshop will feature a slide presentation illustrating the various sources of information available to the family history re­ searcher.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon, at a reasonable price.

The business portion of the meeting will start promptly at 1 :00 p.m. Fol­ lowing the business meeting, and start­ ing at approximately 2:00 p.m. W.J. "Bill" Malina, of Houston, will present the program for the afternoon. Mr. Malina will speak on the religious development in Czech Lands after the death of Emperor Charles IV. The period of time covered by this presen­ tation is sometimes known as the Golden Age of the Czech Lands, which compose most of present day Czechoslovakia, and an era which had great impact upon the philosophy of the Czech and Moravian people who came to Texas from Europe in the last 1800s and the early 1900s.

Following the program, at ap­ proximately 3:00 p.m., the McLennan County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas will be formally in­ stituted.

A $3.00 donation will be requested at the door at the time of registration.

Proceeds from the donations will go to the Albert J. Blaha Memorial Research Fund.

Bylo nedavno oznameno, že česká stolice, při universitě Texasu v Austině, bude skutečnossti, což znamená, že bez ohledu, kolik bude ucházečů na češtinu, třeba na příklad jen jeden stu­ dent, český jazyk a historie se bude vyučovat na UT na věky - bude-li ovšem zájem.

Velice záslužná událost pro všechny našince, hlavně ty, co se svýmy dary o to zasloužili. Protože se chce zvýšit celý obnost na jeden milion, je třeba další dárce a další dolary. Během jara se plánuje oslava této události přímo v Austině, tudiž kde kdo pomozte a zajištěte zdárný výsledek. Bude to více méně, mezník krajanské spolupráce, že když se chce, všechno jde!!!

V poslední chvíli se chce zachránit aspoň pro budoucnost, co se zanedbalo v minulosti mezi námi všemi, že se dost nedbalo, více méně ignorovalo, dbát zachovat dědictví naši menšiny a to českého jazyka, bez kterého, se nemůžeme k naši národnosti, ani veře­ j ně moc hlásit. Je to smutná skutečnost, že kromě českých nápisů, jmen, spolku, organisaci, atd. český jazyk byl tak ignorován, že prostě veře­ jně velmi chudě, až útrpně existuje. Z historie je známo, nejen angličtí učitelé, ale i rodiče našinců zakazovali a bránili mladým, mluviti česky. Jak veliký to byl omyl a zrada, na hrdosti.

Přirovnejte si mexickou národnost, jak si přímo vynucuje všude na školách, úřadech v obchodech i v kostelích svůj jazyk, jako samozřejmý!

Je to historie, že i mnoho těch "nových" za poslední léta co hledajíce v českých spolcích prostředí domova, zklamání odešli a žijí jako čeští "Robinsoni" mezi, kdysi největší českou menšinou v Americe. Mnoho těch vedoucích českých organisací by měli znáti aspoň částečně česky, aby našinec nemusel být vyzván v českém spolku, aby mluvil anglicky a slyšel.

"Jste přece v Americe," což se mě stalo nejednou. Navíc ten dotičný se zdobil českým jménem. Dnes je za­ jímavé, že loni, když jsem učil češtinu, a snad začnu zase, řady žáků více méně vzpomínali na své mládí při vyučování, když znova "objevená" slova to, neb ono kdysi slyšeli od stařenky, nebo starečka. Takže v podvědomí je

27. únorna 1991 blažilo, že co slyšeli, není jim úplně cizí. Díky všem těm, co učili a učí a mluví česky, třeba málo, ale přece. To je jediné co zachrání udržet zájem u mladých, půjdouli na U. T. studovat češtinu, neb trochu znalostsi z domova a eventuelně ve styku s těmi, co jsou hrdi česky jazyk používat, jim ulehčí a usnadní vzít si češtinu na U.T. jako, jiný cizí jazyk.

Další možnosti se otvírají těm, co míní se učit česky a eventuelně z ob­ chodních důvodu pracovat na výměně studentů s Československem a nebo se zúčastnit každoročního zájezdu studentů na studie do Prahy nebo Brna. Dnes, jak nikdy předtím, jsou možnosti pro ty co znají dosti česky, navázat obchodní spojení ze zemí svých předků.

Mě osobně bylo nabídnuto mnoho obchodních nabídek i investic, takže kdokoliv máte zájem ochotně dám informace a budu vám napomocný.

Dík všem dárcům co pomáhají utvořit tu českou kadedru v Austině, ale dbejte též, aby byla slyšet a pod­ porována čeština i tam kde žijete a žijí budoucí studenti češtiny, aby ten milion se neutopil pro naši nedbalost a stal se jen náhrobní deskou.

Ten otazník na začátku je zaležitost nás všech, zda jsme pohrobníci a nebo potomci z národa, který přes všechny bouře existuje přes TISIC let.

Schůze společnosti českého dědictví Jarní celostátní schůze společnosti českého dědictví států Texasu se bude konat v sobotu 23. března 1991 v síni řádu SP JST číslo 6, v okolí Cotton­ wood, asi tři a půl mil na severovýchodní směr od města West u Texas, na farmářské cestě číslo 2114.

Zapisování členů a hostů začne v deset hodin ráno. Bude možné prohlédnout české sbírky a rodinné historie a jiné věcí, které budou vyloženy na ukázku. Každý je vítán přinést své české věcí, které by byly zajímavé na prohlídku pro návštevníky schůze. Také bude příležitost si pohovořit, besedovat, spřátelit a seznámit se jeden s druhým.

V jedenáct hodin ráno Robert Janák .z Beaumont přednese seminář o pramenech potřebných na hledání a vyšetřování své rodinné historie. Oběd se bude podávat v dvanáct hodin v poledne za dobrou cenu. Uřední podíl schůze začne přesně v jednu hodinu od­ poledne. Informační podíl začne asi ve dvě hodiny odpoledne? W.J. "Vilém" Malina z Houstonu bude mluvit o naboženském rozvoji v českých zemích po smrti císaře Karla IV. Asi ve čtyři hodiň odpoledne nová odbočka z McLennan okresu bude založena.
