Our local lodges*** have received a letter from Brother Sidney Kacir con­ cerning the upcoming workshop.

The 25th SPJST Convention delegates in Temple, passed that workshops be held on an annual basis.

We have held four local lodge workshops in the past four years; the first coordinated by Secretary­ Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, the second by Vice President Bernard Gebala, the third by President Howard Leshikar and the fourth by Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas. Many favorable comments have been received on these workshops. This one is coordinated by Legal Advisor Sid­ ney Kacir. ln carrying out the by-laws of the last convention, the Supreme Lodge has set a date and time of this year's workshop. The workshop will take place Saturday, February 23, 1991 at Lodge No. 80, Holland from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a complimen­ tary noon meal to all attending. The host lodge MUST have a correct count of persons attending to enable the caterer to provide ample amount of food for the noon meal.

9-10 a.m.--Complimentary coffee and kolaches 10 a.m.-12 p.m.--Workshop Lunch -- Complimentary catered meal 1-3 p.m. --Workshop This year's format will include these topics: An overview of member benefits and lodge goals, insurance sales representatives and products and lodge goals. How lodges can help, visions and why lodges have goals, why good books and effective Audit Committees are essential and help lodges, State and Federal laws and lodges, Legislators and State Board of Insurance; also presentation of Frater­ nalist of the Year Award, what your directors do for your lodge and how your director can assist your lodge, and what makes a lodge successful.

The presentations will be informal; this format will encourage an ex­ change of ideas between lodges. Be there!

Lodge No. 80 (host lodge and lo­ cated near Temple), has donated use of their lodge facilities for this event.

Remember, this very infonnative meeting has been scheduled for February 23 at 10:00 a.m. The Supreme Lodge has authorized pay­ ment of mileage for one car per lodge.

Realizing how this important informa­ tion can affect our future successes and accomplishments, the Home Of­ fice will do everything possible to make this a productive learning ex­ perience. Let us make this year this largest attendance in five years I Who is invited? Local lodge officers and interested members are invited to attend. (Mileage reimbursement at 30 cents per mile authorized for one car for each local lodge.)

Meanwhile sitting on the sidelines at home does not mean civilians have to be inactive during the gulf war. The American Legion, American Red Cross, USO and United Way are among organizations recruiting volun­ teers to assist military families in everything from tax preparation to home repairs or baby-sitting. Those in­ terested should contact local chapters directly. The San Antonio USO, for example, needs volunteers to provide temporary shelter, transportation and information on local hospitals for families arriving in Texas to meet wounded soldiers returning from the Persian Gulf. The Memphis USO is putting together a group of volunteer psychologists to counsel children and military spouses about coping with war. The American Legion is also looking for volunteers to respond to requests for help that are pouring into its new nationwide hot-line aimed especially at National Guard and reservists' families. Those requests in­ clude helping young military spouses get driver's licenses, providing cam­ corders for videotaping messages to family members in the gulf, fixing balky furnaces and doing other home repairs. The need for help won't end when the war does. The United Way will want volunteers who can provide temporary housing for families of troops being debriefed at military bases and who can staff communica­ tions hot-lines to inform family mem­ bers when their relatives in the gulf are coming home. *** In major cities, the Better Business Bureau report an increase in job scans as con artists try to exploit recession and unemployment worries. In Detroit, for example, the BBB is logging more than 250 complaints a day about bogus employment-service firms that claim to sell information on job openings.

Victims are lured by newspaper or magazine ads that promise careers in modeling,public relations and as flight attendants, among others, with no ex­ perience needed and salaries as high as $45,000. The services often demand an $80 fee for advice on supposed job leads.

Unfortunately, the jobs do not exist.

What people get is information readily available elsewhere, such as newspaper classified ads, generic job­ application forms or tips on resume writing. The Alliance Against Fraud in Telemarketing also reports a rise in the use of 900 numbers are phony employ­ ment-service companies. ln a recent case, would-bejob applicants respond­ ing to ads for non-existent clerical and construction jobs were unwittingly billed $18 per call after dialing a 900 number that produced only a garbled recording. (Local phone companies usually let consumers dispute and wipe out one such unwelcome charge.) As a general rule, legitimate employment agencies never guarantee a job and typically get paid only after they have made a placement. Before signing any agreement, ypu might want to check with the BBB to see how responsive the finu has been to complaints, a good indication of trustworthiness.

We, the Social Committee, are so happy to have two new hard-working members to join us. We needed help, but being volunteer work there are very few who would want to work every Thursday night, like some of us have been at this twenty-six years. To me it's so much fun to associate and meet new people every week. The two members are Naomi Spencer and Frank Tilich. The committee welcomes you both.

Guess what? Pat and Bill Neskorik have become grandparents=a little girl, Rachel Ann, was born January 18th. We went to a baby shower on January 19 at Mrs. McReynolďs home, who is a sister to Pat. When we got there, there were pink baJloons in the yard. We immediately said, "I know the little one has arrived. So in­ stead of Terri, the baby's mother open­ ing the gifts, the grandmother, Pat opened them. She was the happiest grandmother I ever saw. Pat was look­ ing for Bill, the grandfather, but for some reason didn't show. Rachel Ann was greeted by her father, Jimmie and half-sister. We all congratulate you and family and we hope Rachel will become an SPJST member.

Eddie Skeets and his orchestra from Iowa played at our lodge on January 1 lth. His music was beautiful, but we had a small crowd=no publicity was the reason. I do hope Eddie wasn't too discouraged, and not come back.

Royal and Laura Bell Warnasch, who are his personal friends, helped Eddie find his way around. Let's give this a thought; we have so many fine local bands, who would really draw the crowd, but instead bands are hired that no-one knows anything about; how­ ever, Eddie Skeets has been with us many years and is well-known and would draw some big crowds, if publ­ ized. I do hope he'11 be back next January.

I had a long taJk with Birdie Pech this morning, January 28, 1991. Birdie always bad good ideas in our Birthday Club and she again mentioned some­ thing for Valentine's Day, but is a lit­ tle late. She hasn't been able .to come to our meetings due to her health. She is feeling better right now.

On January 18, my grandchildren, Joe and Adam, went with me to Need­ ville to see Mama Hanka. You have no idea how happy she was to see Joe and Adam, especially. She made the remark that Joe was always her boy, and amazed how Adam had grown. On March 20, she'll be 96 years old, born in 1895. Her birthday party will be Friday, March 29th. We, are all look­ ing forward to that day--that is the party at the rest home in Needville.

We are so grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Marx, the administrators, who take such good care of her.

Two of our dear members. Frank and Minnie Krotky, have been ill. Frank is in Memorial City Rehabilitation Cen­ ter, Room 2403A, 3043 N. Gessner, Houston, Texas 77080. Do send a card and let them know we haven't forgot­ ten them.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Joe and Viola Spacek celebrate their 47th anniversary this month.

Members who were celebrating an­ niversaries this month included: Raymond and Dana Schimcek (1 year), Lawrence and Betty Bienek (6 years), Clyde and Janice West (9 years), Bob and Jarolyn Popp (13 years), Joe and Viola Spacek (47 years), Jerry and Be­ ssie Sliva (52 years).

Jarolyn Popp reported that the Christmas bags had been made for the members in the nursing homes. Bags filled with tissues, hand cream, sham­ poo, fruit and candy were delivered to Brother and Sister James Kostelnik, Brother and Sister August Blanar and Brother and Sister Jaroslav Kleprlik.

These members were surprised and delighted that they were remembered by their fellow members. Thank you notes and wishes were conveyed to members by the secretary. Sister Agnes Popp thanked the members for the card received after her cataract surgery.

The premium refund check from Supreme Lodge has been deposited into the bank. Letters from the local lodge were sent to the menibers, to collect lodge dues of $5.00 per adult member.

Brother Anthony Trilicek reminded our members that the 75th anniversary of Lodge No. 133 was only a year away. Preparations will begin being made for the celebration. Brother Emil Matula solicited the members' ideas in regard to a souvenir booklet which will be made. Discussion on this issue will be held at the next meeting.

Brother Don Netek informed the members that March 16, 17 and 18, there will be a Texas Polka Festival held in Belton, Texas. Thus far 39 bands will be partcipating. Members were also reminded of the Czech Cul­ tural Heritage Day that will be held on March 3 in San Antonio.

FAC J.C. Johnson reported on the horseshoe tournament and plans on having a speaker and film on a CPR course at our next meeting.

Trustee Report: It was reported that the fire extinguishers will be checked.

Funeral services were held January 6 at the Knesek Chapel in Fayetteville with burial in the Fayetteville City Cemetery. The services at the chapel and also at the cemetery were con­ ducted by the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge.

He was born in Fayetteville on March 17, 1900, the son of the late John R. and Julia C. (Sladek) Kubena.

He resided most of his life in Fayet­ teville and the La Grange areas.

Before becoming county clerk, Mr. Kubena owned and operated the Chev­ rolet dealership in Fayetteville.

He was a longtime member of the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge, a 65-year member of the La Grange Noon Lions Club and a former president, a member and formerly a director of the SPJST, a director of the Sportsman Club of Texas, a member of the Colorado Val­ ley Shrine Club, active player in the East Texas Baseball League, active as a National Pigeon Judge, a 1922 graduate of A&M University and a member of the Aggie Club.

Surviving are one son, John B. Kubena of Round Top; two sisters, Julia Mendel of Houston and Nita Rosenberg of La Grange; three brothers, and four sisters-in-law, Lam­ bert George "Tom" and Ellen Kubena of Ellinger, Woodrow W. and Hazel Kubena of Austin, Edwin and Frank "Chili" and Ivy Kubena and Minnie Mae Kubena of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville, Texas wish to express our . sincere sympathy to the bereaved fami­ ly of MRS. CLARAJ. LEGLER, who passed away on November 17, 1990 in La Grange with interment at the La Grange City Cemetery on November 19th.

She was born June 12, 1897 in Rutersville, the fourth of six children born to Leopold Brunner and Mary Baron Ewald Brunner. She grew up with another six stepbrothers and sisters.

Legler attended the Rabb's Prairie School after her parents bought a farm in that area in about 1910. Her first day in school, she spoke no English and feared she would never learn any­ thing.

She was united in marriage with Otto F. Legler on April 26, 1917 in La Grange and they lived with his parents, Anton and Anna Legler in Plum until December of that year when Mr. Legler was stationed in Fort Crockett.

They then moved to Galveston.

After the Armistice on November 11, 1919, they moved back to their new home in Plum where they farmed.

Fearing a crop failure due to drought, Mr. Legler began work with the MKT Railroad as a telegrapher-agent where he served and they moved to West Point and New Ulm. In about 1924, they moved to Fayet­ teville with a son and daughter where they built a new home next to Fayet­ teville Light and Ice Plant which they owned and operated until 1929 when that business was sold and they moved to La Grange with two sons and a daughter. Two more sons were born in La Grange.

Ms. Legler was, until recent years, active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of World War I Auxiliary. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society of Sacred Heart Church and the Fayette Museum League. She was also a member of the SPJST Fayetteville Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Otto F. Legler on December 5, 1977; infant son, Edmund; grandson, Mark Legler and 1 O brothers and sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Gladys Cronenberger of La Grange; three sons, Lee Otto "Possum" Legler and wife, Verlene of Houston, J.D. "Bebe" Legler and wife, Viola of La Grange and Clarence W. "Buster" Legler of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one sister, Annie (Mrs. Glen) Prause of La Grange; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in La Grange February 21, 1941, Mr. Ziese was the son of the late Helmuth F. and Tiny Mae (Marth) Ziese.

He was a member of the SPJST, St. John Lutheran Church, and the Volun­ teer Fire Department, all of Warrenton, and the Hermann Sons Lodge in Round Top. He lived most of his life in the Round Top area, having moved to La Grange only a month ago.

Mrs. Chupik received her 50-year Lodge No. 47 pin in 1979.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister MARYMARESHSIPTAK, who died Tuesday, Decemer 18, 1990 at a Bryan hospital at the age of 86.

Mrs. Siptak was born on December 27, 1903 in the Union School com­ munity, the daughter of Josef V. and Marie Zalmanek Maresh. She was a lifelong resident of Burleson County.

Following her graduation from Caldwell High School, she attended

Southwest Texas State University and received a teacher's certificate. She then taught in several Burleson County rural schools.

On December 25, 1927, Mary Maresh was united in marriage to Joe H. Siptak. She was active in the New Tabor Brethren Church until 1966 when she transferred her membership to the Caldwell Brethren Church. Mrs. Siptak loved the Lord and strived to serve Him throughout her life. She began teaching Sunday School in her teen years and continued to do so until her eighties. She sang in the choir and was very active in the Christian Sisters, both on the local and state levels. She was a member of the Mutual Aid Society and was the cur­ rent local secretary-treasurer.

In addition to church involvement, Mrs. Siptak participated in many com­ munity organizations. During the 40s and 50s, the Woman's Club and its library was one of her interests. She was a long-time member of the Home Demonstration Club and the Fair As­ sociation. Through these organiza­ tions, she demonstrated her enjoyment of crafts, gardening, flower arranging, canning and baking. She helped or­ ganize the first Burleson County Kolache Baking Contest which later became the Kolache Festival. In 1989, she and her husband were honored to be named the first King and Queen of the annual Kolache Festival. As a member of the Burleson County His­ torical Society, she prepared several art~cles for the ~ict?rial hi~tory book which that orgawzatto~ published.

Mr. Moore was born August 1 o, 1925 in Deanville to the late James Lee and Elza Shiller Moore. He attended school in Deanville and was a 1942 graduate of Caldwell High School.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Anny as a Private First Class. He was wounded in battle on the island of Okinawa and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

After he returned back home to Burleson County, he married Grace Havemann on October 22, 1947 in the Birch community.

He was the retired Executive Vice President of First State Bank of Deanville where he worked since March 1955. He was also an advisor and past director of the bank and was known as a communityleader.

He had a life membership in the American Legion Post 451 VFW Post, 4458 and D.A.V. Post '86, all of Caldwell. He was a past trustee of Somerville ISO Board of Trustees, an officer of Hermann Sons Lodge 301 in Deanville and SPJST Lodge 186 Caldwell.' ' He was an officer of the Deanville Water Supply District and was instrumental in the establishment of rural telephone system in Burleson County. He was a member of Deanville Volunteer Fire Department, and enjoyed working his cattle, playing dominoes and card game skat.

He was a member of the past council: president of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lyons where he was also active in Sunday School program and sang in the church choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Moore; four sons, Elwood and wife Cathy Moore, John and wife Carla Moore, Kenneth Moore, and Gregory Moore, all of the Birch community; one brother, Edgar Moore of Lago Vista, Texas and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 3 from the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lyons with Rev. Bruce Bergthold of­ ficiating. A private family interment ceremony was held before the memorial service. Members of the Campbell-WilliamsVFW Post 4458 in Caldwell served as honor guard for the memorial service.

Bob, as he was called by his friends, was treasurer of our lodge for many years. He always worked toward the betterment of our lodge and always had a kind word for those he met. He was also a charter member of the Texas Czech Beseda Dancers and per­ formed at many festivals in Texas, Germany and Czechoslovakia.

During World War II, Bob was a P61 aircraft pilot and a member of Night Fighters Association. He was also a member of American Sokol.

Dr. Skrivanek was born July 21, 1920 in Caldwell, Texas to Joseph and Mary Drgac Skrivanek. He was reared in Caldwell and graduated from Caldwell High School. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1940.

He graduated from the Southwestern Medical School in 1944.

On December 1, 1945 he was mar­ ried to Miss Maudee Hanks of Dallas.

He was with the U.S. Air Force in 1945, being discharged in 1947. In 1948 they moved to Ennis where he was in medical practice until he retired in 1978 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Texas Medical Association, American Medical As­ sociation, and the Ellis County Medi­ cal Association.

Brother Elsik was born on November 12, 1918 to Emil and Frances Elsik of Oenaville in Bell County where he grew up in the Temple area and at­ tended Oenaville School. He served in U.S. Army during World War II, and later moved to Dallas Brother Elsik was retired from the U.S. Postal service. He worked for the RVOS in Dallas, was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47 for 56 years having received his fifty-year pin at our lodge meeting. He was also a member of WFLA 401 in Danas and a a member of the Brethren Church in Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ella Kovar of Kansas.

Grieving survivors are his wife, Lib­ bie Blsik of Dallas; two sons, Albin Elsik, Jr. of San Antonio and Dale Elsik of Dallas; a daughter, Pamela Todd of Dallas; three brothers, Olvin Elsik of Zabcikville, Johnnie Elsik of Cyclone and Antone Elsik of Temple; four sisters, Ruth Jurca of Cameron and Vlasta Havlik, Lillian Billeck and Dolores Teer, all of Temple and four grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee on behalf of our SPJST Jaromir Lodge No. 54, West officers and members, express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother JOE DUJKA, age 84, of Ross, who passed away early Wednesday morning, January 16, 1991 at West Rest Haven Nursing Home.

Funeral services took place Friday, January 18 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead with the Rev. Walter Albers officiating. Interment was in West Brethren Cemetery near West.

Born in Czechoslovakia on July 11, 1906 to John and Anna Dujka, he came to the United States in 1907 and had lived in McLennan County, Texas since 1919.

Brother Dujka and the former Mary Herijan were married January 19, 1941 in West. (On January 19, 1991, they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.)

Brother Dujka was very active in SPJST activities, having served as president of the former Lodge No. 126, Ross and was a former insurance sales representative for many years before merging with SPJST Lodge No. 54. He joined the SPJST on April 14, 1925.

Besides his other activities, he also was a representative for RVOS Fire In­ surance, and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Dujka of Ross; one son, Joe Dujka, Jr. of Grand Prairie; four daughters, Evelyn Pareya and Betty Moss, both of West, Pauline Lawson of Grand Prairie and Mary Ann Roden of Godley; two brothers, Milan Dujka of Ross and Rudy Dujka of Chicago, Illinois; one sister, Anna Skrabanek of Dallas; twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were Gary Roden, Ricky Roden, Brandon Moss, Charles Walker, Alvin Lander and Danny Mynarcik.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the West Volun­ teer Ambulance Association.

Mrs. Janik was a housewife and a 44year resident of Wharton. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Name Altar Society, and Our Lady Queen of the Clergy No. 1990 of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Funeral Mass was celebrated Satur­ day from Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana, celebrant.

Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Zdravko and brother-in-law, Kito.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Blue Bonnet Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Colleyville.

Funeral services for Joe Niver, Sr. of Route 1, East Bernard, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 17 at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis with Rev. Frank Jones officiating. Inter­ ment followed in Guardian Angel Cemetery.

Born February 1, 1906 in Fort Worth, Texas to Frank Niver and Rosie Lee Neckar Niver, he was reared in Fort Worth and attended Rosebud­ Lott School. He married Emily Kon­ vicka in 1929 and to this union four children were born. She preceded him in death in August 1960.

In October 1964, he married Chris­ tine Srubar Marek and they celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1989.

He was a farmer all his life and also worked as a ginner and gin bookkeeper to supplement his income. He was ap­ pointed Austin County Sheriff's deputy and served for the City of Wal­ lis and the Wallis area from 1961 to 1964.

He was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, member of KC Coun­ cil 3793 and Fourth Degree KC, mem­ ber of SPJST Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28 East Bernard, and of Wallis Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Niver; daughter, Rosalee Minks and husband Joe of Wallis; sons, Joe Niver, Jr. and wife Betty Jean of Vil­ lage Pleak and Howard Niver of Hous­ ton; sisters, Gladys Berstrom of Austin, Mary Davis of Chickasha, Ok­ lahoma, Frances Sobieski of Houston, Viola Smart of Cheboy Gan, Michigan; one half-sister, Dorothy Faircloth of Houston; brother, Victor Niver of Houston; one step-brother, Billy Niver of Houston; 11 grandchildren and 9 greatgrandchildren.

Friday night's events will begin with a superstar performance in the 10,000 seat arena. Saturday will feature 14 hours of non-stop music, eating, and great fun and fellowship. Top quality food vendors are being invited to fur­ nish the festival goers with great bar­ becue, kolaches, sausage, sauerkraut, and other delicacies generally found at events of this kind.

"Sunday will be a day to remember," according to Tupa. "We are beginning the day with a giant Polka Mass and ending it with the first Polka Music Awards show ever held in Texas. We are going to honor those who have made, and are making, polka music what it is today in our state. No one has ever done it before and it is long overdue.

Many bands familiar to SPJST mem­ bers are scheduled to perform accord­ ing to Mr. Tupa.

Mr. Tupa, Julius, to all of his many friends and acquaintances, is a man with a mission. "I have felt for mény years that polka music and the musicians who perform it have gotten very little respect." he states. "I intend to do something about that. Lidé se zdají být spokojenější, myslím, že jsou hrdí na to, že všechno dobře dopadlo jako nikde ve světě. Teď čekají, až se poměry urovnají. Hluk je nejmladší město Slovácka, má okolo pěti tisíc obyvatel. Lidé jsou tam velice pracovití a každý chce mít dům, ve skutečnosti je to vila, pěknější než soused a tak jeden předhání druhého a pradědečci, dědečci a rodina celá pracuje zadarmo, aby ten dům (oprav­ du vila) byl pěkný uvnitř i zvencí z zahrádka okolo. A když je místo v humně, je tam i zeleninová zahrádka.

Uvnitř domu jako ve skleníku květin, palem a různé exotické květiny, fíkusy, filodendrony a tak dále, zkrátka takový přepych, který ani v Americe nemá každý občan..

Ještě dostanou novomanželské půjčky· od okresu nebo továrny, kde jsou zaměstnaní, na malý úrok· a potom jim z platu každý měsíc na dluh strhují. Teď zase mluvili, že budou vyšší přídavky na děti a ženy nemusí po porodě do práce, někdy až za tři roky a mají se starat o rodinu a děti.
