short ...it really is, when you stop to think of all the fascinating places to be found in odd corners of the world. Life is short, much too short, when you think of all the interesting, exciting and pleasant things there are to do.

It's short when you think of the great things you would like to accomplish or the fortune you would like to leave be­ hind you, or the things you would like to do for family, friends and the mil­ lion of destitute people who cannot help themselves.

Life is short enough at best, but did you ever think how carelessly you shorten the span allotted by failing to make the most of each day that comes along? Did you ever realize that a day wasted in pining, in quarreling, or in

aimless wishing for better times, is a day that might never have existed, for all the good it has brought you?

You want a more gracious life. You can have, but not by wearing a chip on your shoulder and daring everyone who comes along to knock it off.

You can find a place for yourself in the community, if you will try to do that community a service, instead fo holding yourself aloof from the town people and looking down on their stupidity.

Suppose the neighbors haven't the high-caliber intellect on which you pride yourself? Are you doing any­ thing to help them attain a broader life? Not if you gaze down your aris­ tocratic way at your "inferiors," not if you refuse to associate with them.

As a matter of fact, when you follow the latter course you are deliberately narrowing your own horizon, shutting yourself up in a tight., stingy little world, shortening your life by refusing to share it.

Put this intelligence, on which you pride yourself, to work. Be a com­ munity leader, not a looker-on-with­ scorn, not a slacker who sneers at the ignorance of others but refuses to do anything to better conditions himself!

*** Medicare January 1 began covering part of the cost of mammograms for women over 65, some 22,000 of whom die each year from breast cancer.

Medicare will pay up to $44, or 80 percent of a maximum allowed $55 fee, for the cost of the x-ray, the best method to detect breast cancer early. this formula won't reimburse most women for half the cost of the screen­ ing, typicaJly $100 to $125 in a private office or hospital, but some sup­ plemental insurance policies carried by many Medicare recipients will pay the difference. The National Cancer In­ stitute, (800) 422-6237, can refer women in many areas to clinics that do the test at lower cost. Medicare now pays once every other year, although the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends annual mammograms for women 65 and older, who are three times more likely to develop breat cancer than 40-year­ olds. Medicare does cover yearly tests for women who have a family history of breast cancer or who have had ear­ lier tumors. Follow-up mammograms for women with any signs of cancer qualify for 80 percent Medicare coverage, based on a maximum allow­ able fee of between $50 to $110 depending on the region.

*** A new prescription sleeping pill ap­ proved last week by the Food and Drug Administration may provide far less drowsiness after waking and fewer side effects than Upjohn's Halcion, the most widely prescribed sleeping pill in the U.S., taken by eleven million people. ProSom, made by Abbott Laboratories, promises between six and eight hours of sleep; Halcion takers may get slightly less. ProSom also appears not to cause anorexia, suicidal thoughts and 'other behavioral side effects linked with Halcion in doctors' reports to the FDA. ProSom has been sold for 15 years outside the U.S. and taken by 80 million people.

Like Halcion, it costs about 75 cents a day. However, several psychiatrists and directors of sleep-disorder clinics said they had not yet seen studies on ProSom or tested it. Sleeping pills can be habit-forming and, as a rule, should not be taken for longer than three to four weeks at a time.

Supreme Lodge Christmas Party On December 21, the SPJST Supreme Lodge held a Christmas Party for its employees at the Elk Lodge in Temple.

After exchanging small gifts, the staff and their guests enjoyed a deli­ cious lunch prepared by members of the Elk' s Lodge.

The staff surprised the officers with five Christmas wreaths handmade by a few talented employees during lunch and coffee breaks. Many other employees made contributions toward the materials.

After singing a few Christmas carols, the group was dismissed to celebrate Christmas with their families.

Lodge No. 51, Ellinger Meeting The Ellinger SPJST Lodge No. 51 held their meeting and chili supper on Thursday, December 27 at the Ellinger Fire Station.

The meeting began at 6:30 p.m. and was presided over by President Lud­ wig Kocian.

District I Director Andrew Vavra was also present.

A moment of silence was held for deceased members.

John Mikulenka gave his reports.

Mr. Vavra gave some facts and ex­ planations about life insurance. He also answered questions which mem­ bers had pertaining to the insurance.

Lodge No. 80, Holland Installs Officers Supreme Lodge Vice President Ber­ nard M. Gebala attended a recent Lodge No. 80 meeting in Holland, Texas to install officers.

Not only was this the first lodge meeting of 1991, but it was also the year's first meeting of the new Lodge No. 80 Youth Club. Youth Leader Wayne Hanusch conducted the youth meeting prior to the lodge meeting and installation of officers.

Joe Mikolaj did an impromtu skit from his Czech acting career of the St. Mary's Dramatic Club. Also to everyone's delight, he also told us some old Christmas Czech customs practiced in his earlier days.

Raymond Prasatik was very surprised to receive a framed bronze plaque presented by Treasurer John Bryce Hejl from SPJST Lodge 155.

time. We've been at this place for 26 years and what a good looking place, and the nicest people come here. I hap­ pened to hear several people talk about our hall, and they said it was the nicest place to go dancing in Houston. It made me feel proud.

We also touched base with our celebration for Splash Day June 2nd.

That's a long way off, but we are plan­ ning a ticket sale for that day. Kathy Trefell made a motion, seconded by Mary Kosut to have the drawing. It passed unanimously; Willie Mae Ermis agreed to head this committee. The committee will soon be selected. Wil­ lie Mae has access to buying gifts at a discount. I will keep you informed in the future letters.

Lodge No. 196, Houston-West The first quarterJy meeting of Lodge 196, Houston-West was held on January 13 at 2 p.m. at the Kathy VFW Hall in Katy.

State Youth Director Claudette Reese showed the group some slides on Camp Lone Star and Val Verde, showing various camp activities such as games, canoeing, swimming, danc­ ing and horseback riding. She told about the purpose and advantages of our youth attending camp. This was to acquaint our newly-organized youth club members and Youth Leader Ginger Petter with better under­ standing of what YAD is all about.

Also in attendance were District V Director Marie Stayton and her hus­ band and Mr. Louis Hanus, District V director.

The business meeting was opened by President Nedbalek with the Pledge to the American Flag. Secretary's and treasurer's reports followed along with acceptance of six more new members.

The rest of the meeting was devoted to discussion of the upcoming District V meeting to be held on March 10 hosted by Lodge 196 at the Katy VFW. Letters will be mailed to the president of each lodge in District V and more announcements will be forthcoming in the Vestnik and most local newspapers in the area.

A fellowship meal followed, consist­ ing of dishes brought by the members and drinks furnished by our lodge.

Make plans to join us on March 10 at Katy.

Birthday Club Lodge 88, Houston News I hope my dear Birthday Club Sisters will forgive me for dragging along so slowly, but I was sick for almost a month with a cold I couldn't shake.

On January 9, 1991 the Birthday Club met at the lodge for our monthly meeting and braised-beef dinner.

President Lowrina Lindemann opened the meeting at 11 :00 a.m. with the roll call. We had a real good atten­ dance.

Secretary Rita Alexander read the minutes and they were approved as corrected.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the finan­ cial report.

We have a few sick members: Mary Ehrett with walking pneumonia and Rosalee Kostom had eye surgery and is doing very well.

Our Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut reported on all the sick and also the cards she sent.

President Lowrina mentioned our 26th anniversary celebration on Sun­ day, February 10 and asked if we'd· · like to have the pastry booth that Sun­ day, and if we did she'd like to tum it over to Lillie Spies, who always takes care of that. Bessie Lero made a mo­ tion seconded by Lillian Finn to have the pastry booth. Lillie Spies asked all the sisters to bring pastry, also anyone else who would like to help the Sisters.

It would be very much appreciated.

The day will be very busy: Dinner at 11 :00 a.m. and games from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and a dance with Ray Jurecka playing. Let's have a good

Greeting, The Ladies Circle of SPJST Lodge No. 92 held our first meeting of the year on January 8th. In the absence of our retiring President Betty Billington, Vice President Lily McMillan called the meeting to order.

After the reading of minutes and the treasurer's report, installation of of­ ficers was conducted by Flora Koci.

Newly-installed President Clara Cohn had a short business meeting.

Hospitality chairman then gave a report on cards sent to shut-ins and ailing members.

Hostesses for the February meeting will be Victor Murphy, Liz Howard, Helen Kubala and Millie Wruble.

Thirty-five ladies and seven wen were present. We were glad to wel­ come three visitors from Czechos­ lovakia, who are guests of Jo Prochaska. · Door prize was won by Margaret Konecny.

A special get well note to our retiring president, who is recuperating in the Cleburne hospital. We missed you at the meeting and want to express our appreciation to you for making our meetings lively and with good humor.

The youth members are going skat­ ing at Lee' s skating place in Hillsboro on January 20th. All youth club mem­ bers are welcome.

All of our youth received the camp T-shirt design contest sheets; the dead­ line is January 31st. Good luck, kids!

Our youth club took cakes to West Rest Haven.

The youth will be working on Valen­ tine items and we will have our Valen­ tine Party on February 8th. Each youth will furnish hot dogs and drinks.

Everyone is asked to bring sweets, chips and dips. They will also ex­ change Valentines and play games. All adults are invited to come and have fun and play games.

Youth members donated canned goods, also clothes to needy families.

Birthdays in January are for Craig Hromadka and Melinda Kolar.

I hope the weather gets warmer so all of you can come on Fridays and work on our projects.

Lodge 142, Houston Youth Plan Golf Social Dear Readers, The youth club of Lodge 142, Hous­ ton held their monthly meeting on Thursday, January 10, 1991 at 6:30 p.m, We had a good attendance.

First of all, we discussed our Christmas Party which was held on December 14, 1990. It went well and all who attended seemed to enjoy it very much.

We have planned to go to Mountasia Fantasy Golf on Saturday, January 12th. All of us will meet at the lodge at 12:30 p.m, This will be our social for the month of January.

All of us were reminded of the Camp T-shirt Contest which is due on January 31, 1991. Everyone is to send in a great idea for the T-shirt in which the theme this year is "Save the Earth."

All of us were also reminded to keep doing their Vestnik Projects in which this adds your points up quickly.

We adjourned our meeting and all went out to eat pizza.

The business discussed was, we are going to have a Valentine Party on February 6 at 7 p.m. Everyone is asked to make up a Valentine game. Also, there will be a Valentine card contest; bring your homemade card.

The president adjourned the meeting at 7:31 p.m.

Our youth club would like to thank Melissa Macalik for a great year of fun. She will still be around but as an assistant youth leader. We would also like to welcome back Linda Trojacek, our new youth leader.

Také z kapes jsem vyhazoval všechno to "zlato". Ale když jsem chtěl vyhodit · poslední list, předvapením jsem výskl. -- Ten byl opravdu zlatý, a maminka mi to také potvrdila, když jej prohlížela, potěžkávala a schválně na zem upustila, aby poznala, jak zvoní.

Zlato, zlato, zlato! Bylo to opravdu zlato. Ale kdo mi je dal, a kdo mě napálil s tím uschlýmlistím, toho jsem nevěděljá ani mamka.

Když však jsem jí povídal všechno o své cestě k poli, řekla: "Ano, ano, ten stařeček v háji byl jistě čaroděj Pod­ zim, který si s tebou zahrál, aby ti ukázal, že je umělcem čarodějem, který opravdu něco umí."

Kohoutí zápas.

Přišli do vsi dva cikáni. Za humny jednoho statku spatřili dva krásné kohouty. První cikán povídal: "Bratře, vidíš-li ty kohouty? Naučme je spolu zápasit a na jarmarce vybereme hodně peněz za tu podívanou. V Anglii mají jen maličké kohouty a ti spolu zápasí, až peří lítá a krev teče; což teprve tihle velicí a statní." Druhý cikán odpověděl: "Máš pravdu, bratře; co je naše, není cizí a co je cizí, je naše. Vezmi ty jednoho pod kabát a já popadnu druhého!"

Učinili, jak se umluvili a několik dní cvičili kohouty v zápasení. Na jar­ marce provolali kohoutí zápas," a když se lidé sběhli, postavili oba kohouty doprostřed kola. Kohout Petko povídal kohoutu Pětlovi: "Bratře Pětle, co se budeme spolu bít a se krvavit lidem pro zábavu a k vůli těm dvěma ničemům?" Kohout Pětel odvětil: "Pravda, bratře Petko, však jsme si nic neudělali." Oba zůstali klidně stát a hledali si zrnka. Lidé se rozlobili, že byli ošizenia cikáni musili s hanbou utéci. Kohouti se pak vrátili na rodný dvůr.

Maminka a sestra budou odpoledne uklízet. Až uklidí celý byt, půjdou nakupovat. Maminka koupí maso, zeleninu, lahvové pivo a ještě jiné věci.
