Newsbrief Members of Sokol Corpus Christi celebrated the holidays with a Christmas Party and presentation of membership pins. Brother Frank Veselka, the only surviving charter member, received a pin for 60 years of active membership. Lodge No.15, Buckholts Members of Lodge No. 15 met at Bryant Station Restaurant on Tuesday, December 18th to make gift baskets for some of the elderly and shut-ins in our community.

Lodge No. 32, Victoria If you weren't at the Victoria Electric Co-op on December 12th, then you reaJly missed out on a great Christmas Party! Lois Elles was the person in charge and we thank her for her time; she did a wonderful job.

Everyone brought lots of good food and desserts and the eggnog got us off to a good start!

We managed to have a short business meeting (on full stomachs) between the eating and socializing. President Mike Ahlstrom called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Al­ legiance and a moment of silence for our departed members.

Current Events Of Lodge No. 88, Houston History is being made every minute of every day. One can only look back to the activities of yesterday and be witness to the events which mold our tomorrow. Such were the events of December 3, 1990, when over 130 in­ dividuals assembled at Lodge 88 to celebrate another Czech class term-en­ ding. If our fore-fathers had been present, they would have beamed with pleasure to see and feel the intense in­ terest of all participants.

Louis Hanus located a beautiful framed Certificate of Insurance issued

by SPJST to Frantiska Polivkova dated August 13, 1918 by Lodge Rozkvet No. 62, Galveston. An impromptu skit, using this old certificate written in the Czech language in comparison to the letter-sized modem version written in the English language, formed the basis of a "test of proficiency" given by make-believe teacher Louis Hanus, to Czech instructor and star student W. Souchek. Needless to say, the points of comparison overshadowed the proficiency of the student. Student Souchek then proceeded to translate the Czech version of the policy into the Czech version. Imagine, he said a premium of 94 cents for a $1,000.00 policy! Furthermore, direct stipulation states: should the insured die during the first year of the policy, the pay­ ment would be $250.00; during the second year, $500.00; during the third year, $750.00 and, thereafter, pay a face value of $1,000.00 This together with other necessities of life show how we are confronted with mounting costs. Yes, I must say that student W. Souchek did pass his proficiency test with EXCELLENCE.

He caused a lot of excite­ ment when youngsters recognized him from Club House Cartoons and now Super Ones, and asked for autographs.

We have many members who have the flu or whatever it is that' s going around. I hear that there is another cold front coming in and I run sure that won't help.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Sister Bonnie Steinman and family on the loss of her mother, Mildred Ulch.

She and her husband just moved to Carson City, Nevada and the first day she suffered a stroke. May she rest in peace.

Brother Trey Steinman and Sister Amy Steinman left on December 19 with the Dorothy Shaws Bell Choir and performed in Toledo, Granada, Seville, Merida and Madrid, Spain and Lisbon, Portugal and returned on January 1, safely.

Sister Sheri Mason, who has been visiting her family anď her friend, Fraser Reeves, who came in December 28 will be leaving tomorrow for New Zealand. Get home, safely!

Lodge No. 161, ~ Jourdanton Lodge No. 161 held their quarterly meeting and Christmas Party on December 2, 1990 at 11:45 a.m. at Stage Stop Restaurant in Pleasanton with twenty members and four guests present.

President Lloyd House opened the meeting. Bettie House led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for two deceased mem­ bers, Betty Arnold and Nona Marek.

Ernest Spacek voiced the table prayer.

The minutes were read by Secretary Tillie Koch and were approved after one correction. The treasurer's report was presented. Correspondence was read.

At this time, the lodge decided not to merge with two other lodges in the county.

Officers for 1991 were elected as follows: President--Donald Valchar Vice President/FAC--Henry Mann Secretary/I'reasurer--Tillie Koch Reporter--Bettie House The officers' salaries were men­ tioned and after much discussion, the secretary/treasurer's salary was set at $200.00 for 1990.

President House appointed the Audit­ ing Committee which consists of Chairman Ernest Spacek and members, Vince Pivonka and Lydmil Ermis.

Members' fraternal activities should be reported to the secretary by the March meeting.

The lodge voted to donate $50.00 to ACCEPT, a charity for the needy in the county and also $50.00 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Lodge Rozkvět Lodge No. 172, Pasadena Dear Brothers and Sisters: We had our annual meeting on December 19th, with Brother Jerry Dressler calling the meeting to order in Czech and English and asked Brother Alvin Sefcik to lead in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, also a moment of silent prayer was held for our deceased brothers and sisters.

Sister Lillia Mae Peter called the roll of officers; all were present. Then she read all correspondence and the minutes of our last regular meeting of November 28th. They were accepted as read.

Old man winter is giving everyone a hard time, especially those of you who need to drive to and from work. Hope all of you make it through the cold winter without any problems. Accord­ ing to the forecast, there will be more of the same kind of weather, but when it comes to weather you have no choice, you just have to take it as it comes. The rain is needed but no one likes the icy roads and streets. All I can say is that is Texas.

The New Year's Eve dance and party at Lodge 183 was well attended and everyone seemed to have a good time. There are those who have a good time and there are those who go out and make things happen and make a better world for everybody and per­ haps there a few who are still wonder­ ing what happened!

If we all tried, we could find some­ thing to do to help our lodges to im­ prove relations among members. With the nation involved in a world conflict and so many of the armed forces over­ seas, the nation in a recession, and un­ employment on the rise we will have more difficulty in making ends meet, so all of us need to pull together for a better America.

Just a few words on the lighter side to tell you a few ways a hat can be úsed, some folks just wear them, but a begger passes his, the cowboy carries water in his, the politician throws his in the ring, while a large number just talk about theirs.

New Year Resolutions? You Betl Mr. Sefcik, our Vestnik: editor had a real good article on New Year Resolu­ tions. First make your resolutions, then follow them one day at a time, don't bunch them up. One in particular I'm going to do 365 days a year, one day at a time, is to be nice and smile and I think that I will get a good response from everyone.

The weather? As we say in East Texas, just wait a few minutes and we'll have a change. The Christmas dance at our lodge on December 22 had to be postponed due to cold weather and hazardous road condi­ tions.

Our New Year's dance was an ab­ solute success! Still cold, but no icy roads. We had a full house, the band played great and, if anyone went home hungry, it was their fault. Folks, we had all kinds of food and plenty of it. I would like to thank each one of the ladies who brought a covered dish for all to enjoy; seems to me we had one hundred ladies and seems to me, we had one hundred covered dishes.

Blackeyed peas and cornbread at mid­ night is always a hit and, Hey, in East Texas, a MUST for good luck.

We also want to thank Mr. Louis Hanus for visiting with us at our December lodge meeting. It is always great to see him.

Birthday Club News Lodge No. 88, Houston On December 12, 1990 the Birthday Club met in the lodge dining room for their monthly meeting.

Vice President Pearl Hanka opened the meeting at 11: 15 a.m, with a read-

ing "Wonder." Our President Kathy Trefell had to be in Dallas with her son, who had open-heart surgery.

The minutes were read by Secretary Lowrena Lindemann and approved as read. She also read correspondence from FAC Homer Alexander, Viola Cox and Tillie Helmcamp.

Treasurer Lillie Spies gave the finan­ cial report, and thanked all the ladies who donated the wonderful pastry for Czech Day. Pearl Hanka complimented, on be­ half of all the Birthday Club sisters, the hostesses of December for the wonderful Christmas dinner they prepared for the sisters and their spouses, the officers and the board members. Those who prepared, the food were Kathy and Mike Trefell, Ar­ dith McClellan, Martha Baxter, Gladys and Dub Pulley, Alma McNaspy and Margaret Spahr. We, especially thank Mike and Dub for lifting the heavy pans and washing them. Also thanks to all who decorated.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Dorothy Kudrna. They will probably have a report at our February meeting.

On the sick list are Sister Lillie Hejny, Alvin Elsi.k and Bill Foit. Alvin is in Methodist Hospital (Central) in Dallas. Bill is recuperating at home.

Each one is wished a speedy recovery.

There was no quilting done. The quilters needed a rest.

After the meeting we enjoyed a good lunch, foJlowed by our Christmas party. Gifts were exchanged and everyone seemed to have a good time.

The officers and Sister Linda Trojacek received a gift from the Circle. Sisters Georgia Tupy and Alice Roberts were in charge of decorating.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Sisters Frances Vita, Liddie Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell, whose brother and uncle, Ernest Huff, passed away in December. He visited our Circle many times before he became ill.

CONGRATULATIONS to Sister Vallie Tupy for winning first place on her Double Wedding Ring quilt on Fun Day at the District 2 meeting in Hol­ land, Texas. Wesley Tupy, husband of sister Vallie Tupy, celebrated his 80th birthday at sister Georgia Tupy' s home after the meeting. All his sisters and three brothers-in-law helped him celebrate, so did his wife Vallie.

Ennis has two new residents. Mildred (Tupy) and Bill Baker, who have moved from Anaheim, California, after living there .more than 45 years.

Mildred is one of the seven Tupy sisters. Now all of us reside within 125 miles of each other. They love Ennis.

Several of the families received a nice letter and Christmas greeting from our grand-nephew, Bill Tupy, who is sta­ tioned in Saudi Arabia. Let us continue to remember all those over there in our daily prayers.

Czech Classes At Westchester Spring Branch Evening School The Spring Branch Independent School District is offering an oppor­ tunity to learn to read, write and speak the Czech language in their spring semester classes which will begin at the Westchester Education Center, 901 Yorkchester on Tuesday, February 12, 1991 for the Czech I class and Thursday, February 14, 1991 for the Czech II class.

Our youth club completed their Tom Watt fund-raiser.

Members sold $2,000.00 worth of merchandise for a profit of $530.00 Thanks to each mem­ ber for participating and a special thanks to our buyers.

We continued partying that week with a visit to the Four Seasons Nurs­ ing Center on Tuesday. Members ear­ lier in the month, made treats for each of the residents. Each resident received a Christmas card holder and a Christmas tree made, of yam; Junior and Teen Beseda dancers performed and all members joined in singing the favorite Christmas carols. Many of the residents also joined us in singing. We all enjoyed the visiting very much.

Club Party at Mr. Gatti's. The party was enjoyed by all members and many parents. The pizza was delicious. We exchanged gifts. I thank each of the youth members for the beautiful sweat shirt. Embossed on the front of my shirt is a picture of each of my youth club members. I have enjoyed wearing it and showing each one of you off.

The party ended the 1990 year for our youth club. We had a great year. I thank my outgoing assistant, Katherine Smith, for all her help and support.

Youth Leader Patsy Koslovsky reminded us to turn in our T-shirt ideas and Vestnik projects. She thanked all who participated in selling Tom-Watts and asked everyone to please attend Family Night at 7:00 p.m. to plan our stew supper fund­ raiser on February 15th.

Other dates to remember are the Dis­ trict II Skating Party, our club May Fete on May 18 and February 3 is the next meeting date.

We had a Christmas program which turned out terrific.

Our youth club went to Four Seasons Nursing Home and sang, danced, also handed out treats to the residents.

Later that night, we went to Mr. Gatti's and had our Youth Christmas Party. We also exchanged gifts.

We are planning a lot of new things in our youth club, including a stew supper, May Fete and an overnight summer trip filled with lots of fun events.

Recollections of Early Czech Settlers in America Written by L.W. Dongressfor · the AMERIKÁŇKALENDÁŘ (Translated from the Czech

by Kevin Hannan) There is nó dispute that the first ac­ tual teacher in a Czech school in Texas was Josef Mašík. He had been a teacher in Bohemia, having studied pedagogy with his guardian Jan '.tenaty, a teacher in Jimramov. In 1826 Mašík passed the teaching examina­ tions prescribed in Austria and became an assistant teacher in Březina u Svrat­ ky and in Čermna near Landškroun, He took part in the revolutionary movements of 1848 and he headed a deputation of teachers which went to Olomouc to request a pay increase for teachers from Emperor Franz Joseph, who had taken refuge there from the revolutionary events in Vienna. In 1854 Mašik and his family set out for Texas. On the voyage he lost his wife to cholera. With three small children, he was forced to work on the ranch of a Germanin Cat Spring for five dollars per month.

Mašik then took up farming, but after a poor harvest he fell into even greater poverty. In 1859 he began to teach a regular daily Czech class organized by the Czechoslovak Reading Club in the Wesley settlement in Washington County, about twenty miles from Cat Spring. Here he taught thirteen years.

In 1872 at the age of 62 he gave up his teaching position to F.B. Zdrňbek.

The second professional teacher was F.J. Pešek (born 1850 in Netolice, Bohemia.) He was trained as a teacher in German schools in České Budějovice. Fearing induction into the army, Pešek came to America in 1867.

He began offering private instruction in 1868 for the children of Czech families in an empty house near Mul­ berry in Fayette County owned by Ignác Šrámek. In 1864 a Miss Holub taught Czech at the Haidušek's house and in 1868 the widow Kubala taught in her home at Bluff. During the Civil War Czech schools nearly became ex­ tinct.

Wednesday, January 16, 1991-VĚSTNÍK/11 In 1867 Alois Koňakovský was teaching near Fayetteville in a cabin on the farm of Jan Wychopeň where slaves formerly lived. Koňakovský was well educated in the old country and was a painter of extraordinary talents, as witnessed by his picture of the first Moravian wedding in Texas which appears with this article. (I note that this picture was painted by hand, since in Texas photography is called 'painting,' as in the example: "I had myself 'painted' at the photographer."

After Koňakovský, Josef Křenek taught in 1870 in the home of Josef Janák in Ross Prairie, but only for several months. An actual Czech school was not built until 1871, when a building twenty by thirty feet was erected. The first teacher was Josef Holec. Hruška named Anna Velčovská as one of the first teachers there.

The life of Czech school teachers in Texas was full of hardship, want and povery. Like Jeremiah, Holec laments their plight: "Schools at that time had a difficult beginning. There were no spellers or other books. As soon as a pupil learned to read and write a bit, he had .to stay home and work.

Koňakovský used the newspaper SLAVIE as his only teaching aid. In 1872 the Jonas brothers, publishers of SLAVIE, issued a small speller and about a year later, some forty pages larger. In 1875 August Geringer pub­ lished a larger speller, a year later a second reader and then an American history. A speller and reader for Catholic schools were published in 1879. And as it was with the books, so it was with teachers. Just as Bergmann from Cat Spring had to seek a livelihood outside of the school, so it was with Křenek, Koňakovský, Kubalová and others. I myself went out to chop cotton before it was time to start school and when I dismissed the children, I had to go at it again with a hoe, just so I could eat supper. I planted and sold tobacco so I could buy myself a coat and shoes."

It might be possible to infer from this that the state of Texas completely neglected the education of its citizens.

But this was not so. It is true that our public schools, and above all those in the rural districts, as in all former slave states lagged far behind those in the northern states. Nevertheless, public schools were established everywhere where there was a suffi­ cient number of inhabitants in the dis­ trict and where a school was desired.

In these schools a teacher was paid by the state three or four months of the year. Until 1871 school attendance was not compulsory and the law also did not specify what the language of instruction in public schools should be.

The first Czech families which set­ tled in the community of Ross Prairie had a public school there. An American, Mrs. Simpson, taught there, but in English, of course. Because of the fact that our people did not send their children to public school. Only the Haidušek children attended, and they acquired English and an educa­ tion there.

Where our people were in the great majority, in the public school they received · a Czech teacher who, not knowing English, of course, taught in "Moravian." Where there were more Germans, instruction was in German or "in both languages." This explains the Germanization of several families of Moravian origin. The number of Czech students at the university is generally small and many of those enrolled in Czech lack com­ pletely even a basic knowledge of the language, so that strict university criteria cannot be applied to the teach­ ing of Czech.

How times change! Only a short period of time separates us from people born in Texas not speaking English to children who do not speak Czech. Even we in Texas, where it is said that the Czech language will long be preserved, have found ourselves in the melting pot of Americanism, beneath which flickers the strongest flame of nativism, instigating hatred towards immigrants, and Ku Klux Klanism, which dominates in Texas but which is unfortunately professed even by certain Czech renegades --­ Texas Moravians.

(Translator's note: The author probably exaggerates the sympathies of certain Texas Moravians towards the Ku Klux Klan. Although it enjoyed some popularity among white Protes­ tant "natives" after World War One and into the 1920s, the Klan was violently anti-immigrant and especial­ ly anti-Catholic.

When years from now in Bohemia they will teach children about the eth­ nographic divisions of the Czecho­ Slavic nation, they will say: "The Czechs lived in Bohemia, the Moravians in Moravia, the Slovaks in Slovakia. In North America there once lived American Czechs. After them came Czech Americans, and in Texas there lived Texas Moravians, who were the last to become extinct."

Expression of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge No. 25, Ennis wish to express our sin­ cere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother HENRY A. MACH 65, who died Saturday night at Baylor Medical Center in Ennis after a long illness.

Funeral services for Henry A. Mach were held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Ernie Torres officiating. Rosary was recited by Al­ phonse Honza at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Keever Chapel.

Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary with the following serving as pallbearers: James Zhanel, Johnny Wood, Ray Jackson, Jim Tyler, Larry Dlabaj and Lois Reznicek.

He was born June 10, 1925 in Kauf­ man to John and Hilda Sustek Mach.

In 1936 he moved to Ellis County with his parents and settled in the Creech­ ville community where he attended school.

On May 17, 1944 he was married to Miss Evelyn Haskovec of Creechville.

He was employed by Texas Power and Light for several years. He was a com­ mercial fisherman at the time of his death.

Brother Mach was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Mach of Ennis; two sons, Henry E. Mach and Jimmy Mach of Ennis; a daughter, Mrs. Elick (Shirley) Marusak of Ennis; 7 grandchildren, Jeff Marusak, Dale Marusak, Kim Marusak, Sidney Mach, Rodney Mach, Candy Mach, Dustin Mach; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Marusak; three sisters, Mrs. Lee Wood, Mrs. Martha Dlabaj and Mrs. Eugenia Dlabaj, all of Ennis; a brother, John A. Brother Moore worked for Henley International, Inc. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rosen­ berg, Texas. Brother Danny was a member of Lodge 66 since February 1971.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177 on be­ half of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and sincere sym­ pathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother WILBERT J, BACA, who passed away Wednesday, January 2, 1991 in a Temple hospital; he was 66.

Mr. Baca was born to Louis and Vera Manak Baca, and was raised and edu­ cated in Seaton. He served.in the Navy during World War II and married Theresa Anderle on May 1, 1943 in Cameron. He worked for American Desk Company as a truck driver for 37 years until his retirement in 1986. A Temple resident for 32 years before moving to Little River-Academy eight years ago, he was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Academy SPJST Lodge No. 177.

Survivors are his wife, Theresa Baca of Little River-Academy; a daughter, Sandra Brown of Little River­ Academy; a brother, Leo Baca of Seaton; two sisters, Ella Luksa of Zab­ cikville and Vlasta Motl of Carrollton and one grandson.

Funeral services were held at 1 O a.m.

Friday, January 4 at Sheffield Funeral Home of Temple with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating.

Burial was in Benwood Memorial Park in Temple.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Oddíl Dopisovatelů kurs Pětadvacatý češtiny v Aliefu.

Aliefská večerní škola zahájí ve středu, šestého února 91, již 25. semester hovorové češtiny. Toto vyučování bude 12 týdnů, vždy ve středu, od 6:30 do 9.00 večer v budově High School Hastings North. Tato škola se nachází mezi bulvárem Bellairena jihu a ulicí Alief-Clodinena severu, na jihozápadní straně křižovatky ulic Cook Rd. a High Star Dr. v samostatném školním okresu osady Alief v jihozápadní části velkoměsta Houstonu. Post Scriptum: Vyučování češtiny a učení se českéřečije nutné k zachování našeho národního dědictví jelikož studiem české řeči se stává českoamerické studentstvo etnicky uvědomělejší.Toto studentstvo spolu s dalšími roduvěrnými krajany pak nedopustí aby českámluva se stala tu v Texasu za 30 či 50 let mrtvým jazykem, končícímv muzeu. Česká řeč je slovan­ ský jazyk, který náleží do slovanské jazykové skupiny, jež je největší v Evropě. Znalost češtiny tedy usnadní studia všech ostatních slovanských řečí. Pak ředitel Willie E. Kohutek nastolil úřednfky. Všichniúředníci byli přítomní a pak máme nového přededu, Tim Reese.

Měli jsme tichou vzpomínku za bratra George Divis a sestry Annie Chupík a Ann Chupik.

Návštěvnící byli Gertrude Kahlig, Freddy Schroeder a Ann Balusek.

Nemocní členové jsou Rosa Schnieder, Clara Junek a Ella Kotrla.

16. ledna 1991 Nový člen je malá Candace Zavodný.

Sestra Patsy Koslovský, vedoucí mládeže, podala zprávu, že měla 34 členů, 2 návštěvníky a 4 dospěle.

Budou mít "Fund-raising" večírek 18. února a "May Fete" 18. května.

Zprávy úředníků byly dobré; Judy Pechalová podala zprávu za dozorčí výbor.

Naše poslední schůzeve starém roce 1990 se konala v neděli 16. prosince.

Začali jsme ve 12 hodin 30 minut podáváním chutného oběda, měli jsme pečenou šunku se vším ostatním, kterou obstarali bratři Josef Špaček, Emil Matula a Luis Jašek.

Děkujeme sestrám Viola Špačkové Evelyn Matulové, Lucille Dlugoshové a Alma Triličkové, které pomáhaly s podáváním oběda.

Vánoční pečivo a cukrovinky přines­ ly naše sestry a měli jsme všeho dost a bylo to "nejlepší na světě". Bylo přítomno 50 členů a 8 hostů.

Bratr Anthony Trilíček zahájil schůzi v 1 hodinu 45 minut. Nejprve

nám představil našeho hosta ředitelku sedmého okrsku Thelmu Hrnčířovou.

Pak jsme dali přísahu věrnosti vlajce a . uctili jsme památku zesnulých členů jednou minutou·ticha.

Tajemnice řádu Jarolyn Poppová přečetla zprávy z minulé schůze a podala finanční zprávy a vše bylo při­ jato beze změny.

Sestra Marcella Kleprlíková zaslala poděkování všem členům za vánoční pozdravy a motlidby. President Hlavní úřadovny v Temple, Tx. Howard Leshikar zaslal našemu řádu vánoční blahopřání a vše nejlepší do Nového Roku 1991, což také sestra Thelma Hrnčířová našemu řádu zaslala.

President řádu bratr Trilíček ustanovil výbor pro nové členy, který se skládal z těchto členů: sestra Grace Rohanová, Alma Triličková a bratr Emil Matula a oni schváliližádost pro Kayla Lyn Mazačovou Ge jí jenom 5 měsíců) ona je pravnučka sestry Violy Kurtzové a dcera Eddie a Rhonda Mazač. Její otec je členemnašeho řádu číslo 133.

Bratr Triliček ustanovil kontrolní výbor pro rok 1990. Jsou to Viola Kurtzová, Frances Schimčekováa Don Netek.

Sestra Hrnčířová k nám krátce pro­ mluvila a ujistila nás, že naše SPJST je stabilní a můžeme s důvěrou koupit pojištění a nebo duchodní příjem od nich. Také oznámila, že "Workshop" pro úředníky bude 23. února v 1991.

Bratr Emil Matula poděkoval sestře Frankie Campbellové za její neúnav­ nou práci v našem klubu mládeže.

Poděkoval také sestře Kathy Uribe, která pomáhala s vánočním projektem mládeže.

Svatební výročí v prosinci měli Otto a Jane Hurta, 51 roků, a Richard a· Kathy Uribe 10 roků. Přejeme oběma párům hodně stěstí a zdraví do jejich dalších společnýchlet.

"Split the Pot" vyhráli Rhonda Mazač a Josef Stryk. Dveřní cenu vyhráli 1. Paul Heath, 2. Jarolyn Pop­ pová a Jane Hurta.

Více cen, které přinesla sestra Thelma Hrnčířová bylypoděleny, Julia Sefčíková, Annie Stryková, Karel J. Kurtz a Bill Mareš. Ceny, které darovali bratr a sestra Alvin Schimček vyhráli Josef Stryk, Karen Poppová a Viola Fajkusová.

Ostatní členové, kterých jméno bylo vytaženo z plechovky dostali vánoční nadílku. Bylo tam málo členů, kteří šli domů s prázdnými rukami, ale já byla jedna z nich.

Naše příští schůze bude se konat v neděli 20. ledna ve 2 hodiny odpoledne v St. Margaret Mary aktivním středisku.

Přijměte úvodem srdečné pozdravy ze své původní, dnes již svobodné vlasti, kde většina z Vas má dodnes své příbuzné, přátele, blízké. Okolní svět, který byl pro většinu z nás až do

listopadové revoluce 1989 velkou neznámou, se nám nyní postupně otevírá a my-přechodemk demokracii, pluralismu a tržnímu hospodářství, usilujeme stát se jeho právoplatným členem. Bude to však ještě dlouhá a pro většinu z nás bolestivá cesta, než se podaří překonat důsledky minulosti, více jak čtyř desetiletí totalitního režimu, devastování všech materiálních, morálních i přírodních hodnot. Mozky a ruce našich lidí však již nejednou dokázaly, že dovedou mysleta vzít za práci-ostatně toho jste i Vy, kteří jste muselibudovat novou ex­ istenci "za mořem", živým dokladem, a tak věřím, že i nový, demokratický stát Čechu, Moravaná a Slováků bude časem rovnoprávným partnerem dnešních vyspělýchstátů.

Přijíždějí k nám-do srdce Evropy, nyní stovky, tisíce lidí z celého světa.

Politici, umělci i ti, kteří jsou vůdčími osobnostmi v oblasti bankovnictví, vědy a průmyslu. Přijíždějí s přáním pomoci-radou, skutkem či konkrétní nabídkou spolupráce, při překonávání dnešních obtíží. A je logické, že tyto návštěvy z celého světa vzbuzují protireakci-zvýšený zájem našich občanů o život v cizině, kam jsme se až donedávna nemohli svobodně podívat.

Roste především zájem o život našich krajanů, ať již je politické nebo existenční důvody "zavály" do USA, Kanady, NSR, Švýcarska, Austrálie či kterékolivjiné země, jenž byla ochotna přijmout uprchlíky ze země Východního bloku. Zájem našich občanů o život našich krajanů v USA a Kanadě mi připoměl, že nyní nastal čas, kdy mohu realizovat své dávné přání-připravit pro české a slovenské čtenáře dvoudílnou publikaci o životě našich krajanů v Kanadě a USA. Dát jim příležitost, aby se. formou vyprávění sezpámili s -žívotníjn osudy mnohých z Vás, s tím, jak jste začínali budovat existenciv nové vlasti, jakých úspěchůjste díky svýmznalostema píli dosáhli, s jakými problémy jste se museli-a možná i dnes musíte potýkat, jaké jsou Vaše další plány a cíle. Chci našim lidem přiblížit Vás, kteří jste doposud nezapoměli na svoji původní vlast a mateřštinu, ale i bohatou čin­ nost krajanských organizací a spolků, záslužnou činnost redakcí krajanských novin a časopisů.

Abych toto mohl uskutečnit, obracím se na Vás s důvěrou v pochopení a pomoc z Vaší strany.

Hledám ve Vašich řadách-mezi pod­ nikateli, Krajanskými spolky i jed­ notlivci, sponzory, kteří by byli ochot­ ni přispět na financování mého půlročního pobytu v USA a Kanadě, během kterého bych nejenom shromažďovalpotřebné informace, ale současně se s Vámi i setkával při besedách, na nichž bych čerpal já nové podněty k práci a naopak zase Vám zodpovídal Vaše dotazy, týkající se ne­ jnovějších událostí u nás, v ČSFR. V restauraci.

Včera jsme se rozhodli, že půjdeme všichni společně na večeři do restaurace Zlatá studně na Malé Straně. Šli jsme do jednoho starého domu a uvnitř stále nahoru, až jsme přišli do staré restaurace. Leží vysoko, hned vedle Hradu. Odtud je krásný pohled na Prahu. Celé město tu máte jako na dlani. Vybrali jsme si stul u okna a sedli jsme si. Pan vrchní nám přinesl jídelní lístek. Maminka si ob­ jednala hovězí polévku. Já mám rád zeleninu, a proto jsem si vybral květákovou polévku. Ostatní si polévku nedali. Jako další jídlo jsem si vybral svíčkovou pečeni na smetaně a knedlík. Tatínek si dal anglická játra a rýži a maminka smaženýřízek a bram­ borový salát. Sestra si objednala švestkové knedlíky a Karel skopovou pečeni, bramborový knedlík a špenát.

Tatínek a Karel vypili každý dvě piva, já jsem si dal sklenku červeného vína.

Maminka a sestra si daly džus. Jako moučník jsme si objednali dort.

Tatínek a maminka pili po večeři čer­ nou kávu. Ještě chvílijsme se dívali na osvětlené město. Pak tatínek zavolal pana vrchního a ten nám přinesl účet.

A nyní nová gramatika: 4. pád akuzativ Akuzativ je velmi důležitý pád. V češtině vyjadřuje hlavně přímý předmět, který mají tranzitivní slovesa (tranzitivní neboli pře­ chodné sloveso má tedy předmět ve čtvr­ tém pádě). Některá substantiva mají 4. pád stejný jako 1. pád, jiná mají zvláštní tvar.
