Newsbrief John Kubena, 90, of La Grange died Wednesday, January 2, 1991. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6 at the Knesek Funeral Home Chapel in Fayetteville. His body lay­ in-state at the Koenig-Pwel Funeral Home in La Grange from 9:00 a.m.

Friday until noon Saturday. Brother Kubena was the former SPJST District I Director for many years and he was a member of Lodge No. 1, Fayetteville.

He was also a county clerk of Fayette County for many years. His father, J.R. Kubena, was the first SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary.

When the Fayetteville Lodge No. 1 met Sunday, December 16, 1990 at the SPJST Hall, they had many items on the agenda. The first was the nemina­ tion and election of the following 1991 officers: President -- Louis Polansky Vice President -- Glenn Pflughaupt Secretary -- Irene Polansky Treasurer -- Betty Heinsohn Trustees are Kim Kovar, Edwin Kubena and Brenda Minarcik.

Second item on the agenda was to have a moment of silence in remem­ berance of our deceased members of Lodge No. 1 which included Lad Cmajdalka, past president of Lodge No. 1, Leslie D. Boelsche and Clara Otto Legler, both of La Grange.

Third on the agenda was to give a $50 donation to the Supreme Lodge for the Scholarship Fund which was followed by District I Director Andrew Vavra of Caldwell, presenting a plaque to Miroslav Petrusek for his forty­ seven years of loyalty and service as president of Industry No. 44, which merged with Fayetteville Lodge No. 1 this year (1990).

Naturally, with all this beautiful music, delicious food was served which consisted of cold cuts and scruptious desserts along with Louis Polansky's birthday cake who íncí­ dently was celebrating his 55th birthday on this very day.

This also being the Lodge' s Christmas Party and an excellent op­ portunity to recruit new members, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Klinkovsky from the Supreme Lodge · provided information on SPJST membership eligibility, memorabilia, etc.

Then came the fun part while everyone waited in anticipation while names were drawn for door prizes which included stuffed animals, engraved 1990 Christmas tree orna­ ments and bags of fruit and candy.

Needless to say, the music, food, gifts and fellowship put everyone in the Christmas Spirit.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 10, 1991 and we hope to see you all then.

The meeting adjourned. Everyone got in the Christmas spirit with poems read by Nicholas Vahalík and Gaynell Chudej. The Twelve Days of Christmas was led by Nicholas Vahalík and sung by volunteers from the members. It was .a lot of fun. Gaye Galetka then played the guitar and everyone sang Christmas songs. Santa then arrived and visited with everyone and passed out candy canes. Games were also played.

A delicious lunch of a variety of Christmas goodies were served and en­ joyed.

Door prize winners were Vicky Zak, Evelyn Holy, Helen Zabransky, Elizabeth Vahalík, Patsy Zabransky and Viola Holy.

Agnes Mikush, a resident at Stevens Convalescent Center, was present and received a bag of fruit and goodies, being the oldest member present.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 13, 1991 at Mr. Gatti's begin­ ning at 2 p.m.

Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville Dear Members: Our lodge held its monthly meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 9, 1990 at Mr. Gatti's beginning at 2 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by President Annie Vahalik, followed by the pledge to the flag led by Janell Chudej.

Corresponding Secretary Erwin Holy read the minutes to the previous meet­ ing which were approved. Correspon­ dence followed.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave her report. The members voted to con­ tribute $100.00 to the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch.

Co-Youth Leaders Evelyn Holy and Gaynell Chudej reported they had met with SYD Claudette Reese. They 'are planning to invite the youth of our lodge to the February meeting and hope to re-activate our youth club.

FAC Gaye Galetka asked the mem­ bers to tum in their activity sheets at the January meeting.

Lodge No. 24, Cyclone Dear Readers: The December meeting was called to order by President LaVerne Cabla and all officers were present.

Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

On the sick list is Clayton Cabla who is in the hospital.

The November minutes were read and approved.

Lodge No. 74, Lovelady Dear Members and Guests: I know that it's been a while since there was any report from our Lodge No. 74, so, I decided to let you know we are still hanging on.

We have several hard-working mem­ bers who are trying their best to keep our lodge alive.

There have been some changes. The officers we now have are: Don McKenney--president Jerry Michka-vvice president Joyce Bradshaw--secretary Eva Michka--treasurer Sherry McKenney--youth leader The board of trustees include Chester Shmoldas, Raymond Harris, Denise Harris, Win Bradshaw (also game chairman), Freddie Michka and Don McKenney.

At this meeting, it is cold on the last day in 1990. We are having a New Year's Eve dance tonight. I hope it will tum out O.K. The Michka family had rented the lodge to have their Christmas Party, which took place on December 15 and all the Shmoldas family members were invited. Slivena's maiden name was Shmoldas, so she wanted all the Shmoldas members present, however. all were not able to be present but all those who were there had a great time.

We are indeed proud of the Michka family members because they have supported the lodge well.

The lodge officers we now have are doing all they can for our lodge and everything is appreciated.

I also want to mention Mildred P. Bruton, Box 10, Lovelady, Texas 75851, who sent me $100.00 to give our treasurer for a donation to our Lodge No. 74. Mildred, that is very thoughtful of you for doing that; we appreciate that very, very much.

Mildred Bruton hadn't been to any type of function for many, many years at Lodge No. 74, but she still thinks enough of it to support it in a fraternal manner. Mildred Bruton became an SPJST member of Lodge No. 74 on July 10, 1974.

If, there are other members who do not come to our lodge for entertain­ ment because of health or any other reason, financial help is very much ap­ preciated.

I know there are many members who have thought a lot of our lodge and en­ joyed it very much and may want to support it. The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council enjoyed . their Christmas Party hosted by the Council and held at our lodge.

Future meeting will be announced in January.

The Czech Culture Society meets February 25 at Sokol Dallas Hall. On January 14 all Christmas decorations are to be taken down at 7 p.m.; at that time entertainment meeting will be held so committee members please take note.

President Olson thanked all who brought canned foods to be donated to the Brady Center.

Secretary Salac reported on the Spe­ cial Committee donation. Thanks to her and all who helped in this impor­ tant project.

Brother Ben Jarma read the Sunshine report; get well cards were sent to Louis Slovak, Millie Kettrey, Jerry Talley, Amber Ondrusek, Beulah Horak, Mike Frnka and Dorothy Prasifk:a. Sympathy cards were sent to Annie Zapalac (loss of husband), and the Zastoupil family (loss of father and brother).

Please note at the Christmas Party, it was announced that Lodge No. 84 would be sponsoring a benefit for our members whose house burned; since that time many people have con­ tributed to their need, hence, the lodge will not have the scheduled benefit.

Lodge No. 87, Temple Dear Members: President Ladis Navratil called the Christmas meeting to order Friday eve­ ning, December 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Flag Bearer Ed Reisner led the lodge in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and deceased members were remem­ bered in silent tribute.

Vice President Jerry Valchar gave the evening prayer.

Dorothy Chervenka introduced the following special guests for the eve­ ning, namely, Margie Grant, Helen Speed, Bertha Capps, Ed Hurta and Andrew Hall.

A covered dish meal was served to members and guests.

Youth Leader Pam Seidata Capps called on the youth club to sing Christmas carols. Santa Claus stopped by for a visit; children (young and grown ups, too) visited with him and he presented gifts to everyone. Bags of goodies were handed out to all present (also from Santa).

President Navratil drew names to be presented to those winning door prizes.

A special thanks to members for the delicious food and also to the lodge.

We wish to express thanks to those who were hosts and hostesses throughout the year at the meeting and members who visited with the sick and all who gave of their time in various ways.

Lodge No. 88, Houston News On December 3, we had a beautiful party at our lodge when Bill Souchek celebrated his 85th birthday--it was a surprise put on by two lively students, Angela Prasek and Avis Banks. They are good leaders, and with everyone helping with the food, it was a scrumptious dinner. They very ably conducted the party which had a dual purpose of the last class meeting and observing Mr. W.E. Souchek's birthday. It also ended the 18th term of Czech Study at Lodge 88.

Louis Hanus discovered an old SPJST Life Insurance Policy dated August 13, 1918 purchased by Frantis­ ka Polivka at Lodge Rozkvet No. 62, Galveston. It was used as a basis of a skit to test the ability of instructor Souchek being questioned by Louis Hanus, make-believe teacher. Needless to say, Souchek passed the requireď examination and retains his present position as instructor: Czech music was ably played by John Havlik, Jimmie Brosch and Paul Machac. Several long tables were crowded with dishes of food and tasty desserts. That was all that was needed to thrill the Czech palates.

Forty-one certificates of accomplish­ ments were awarded to the fall term class and inquires were made as to the schedule for the coming 19th term of study.

Bill and Alice were overwhelmed that 52 people came from Katy, Baytown, Pasadena, Liberty, Conroe and Houston, and their biggest treat was when their only daughter, Julie, who has a PhD from Rice University and lives in Oak Park, Illinois came to celebrate with her parents. Further­ more, all of us were delighted to meet this fine lady.

Donna . and Paul East from Mas­ sachusetts visited with their parents Ed and Ellen Miculka for a week, so Ed and Ellen had an open house on December 8 so they could visit with Donna' s uncles and aunts and a few close friends were also asked. It was a delightful party.

Our monthly and annual meeting was held on December 9, 1990. President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 10:15 a.m. with Marlene and Darlene

We had lost three members since our last meeting, they were Ruth Read, John Kadlecek and Milo Karel, for whom we stood in silence.

All the officers were present.

Secretary Mildred Holeman read the minutes which were approved with a few correctíons. She also read the cor­ respondence.

Ten new applicants were accepted.

FAC Homer Alexander announced that the next Defensive Driving Course would be on March 1 and 2 with an $8.00 charge.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney, in her report, announced the Christmas Party on December 10, and it was one of the nicest programs we've had in a long time. Tim Kostom invited the youth to sing with the Choral Group and they graciously accepted. They sang just beautifully. My little grandson Adam was there and sang every song out in the audience. Next year he '11 sing on the stage with the rest. Barbera also thanked Mike Trefell for bringing the youth a pecan pie and the Havemann family for donating the Christmas tree.

Lynn Pflughaupt thanked the Board members for the money they gave the volleyball players to enter the tourna­ ment. In the end, they returned $50.

They made third place and we are proud of you. Those who took part in the tournament from Lodge 88 were Vincent and Vernon Hegwood, Bobby Allbritton, Cathy Goedeke, Kristi Bil­ noski, Kim Holub and Lynn Pflughaupt.

Willie Wehring announced that after social games on December 20, 1990, the lodge would give 20 turkeys to the lucky people.

Marcell Malak made a motion, seconded by Viola Cox to give two scholarships in 1991, and it passed. · Tom Marsh reported that the auditors found the books in order.

Tim Kostom stated he'd report on the Choral Group later.

Mary Kosut gave her report on benevolences.

At 1:15 p.m. we reconvened with the annual meeting.

First, we had a memorial service for 34 members who departed from us in 1990. Helen Hegwood sang the "Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Naomi Spencer.

We continued with the Rules and Regulations after which all the annual reports were given. The Remunera­ tions Committee's report was ac­ cepted.

The Pledge of Allegiance opened our Christmas meeting. Reading of the minutes was waived, and the treasurer and financial secretary gave brief reports.

Beseda Director Sister Martha Vrla reported the dancers performed at the Elks and in San Angelo at Christmas Fort Concho.

Youth Leader Suzanne Vrla said the children bought a Christmas tree and decorated it with their handmade orna­ ments. The tree was delivered to a Polish family who had been in Dallas for only a week. They were very ap­ preciative for it and also for the sweets and small donation for additional decorations for the tree.

The next performance for the Beseda dancers will be at Shiner on April 27, and at the International Bazaar April 26, 27 and 28th. Dance practice will resume in January on every Friday night. Anyone interested in joining the group is welcome.

The Czech Culture will have its first meeting on February 25th. Delegates are Arnold Vrla and Keith and Nancy Shinn.

Former Youth Club member Becky Skrabanek Snow presented her hus­ band, Chris, with a son born December 6th. They named the new baby Taylor Christopher. Congratulations to the new parents and new grandparents Henry and Elaine Skrabanek.

This being a social gathering, a very short business meeting was held.

President Dwight Doeppenschmidt called the meeting to order after a short time of visiting.

Jonathan Haag led our group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll call showed all officers present.

After the officers gave their reports, correspondence was read by President Lonnie Lostak and Vice President Monte Baldwin.

Sister Helen Filipp tendered her resignation as lodge financial secretary. She was commended by President Lonnie for her many years of

faithful service to the lodge. She has served her lodge well, not only as financial secretary, but she bas been a top insurance sales representative bringing many new members into the lodge. For several years, she has won honors for her insurance sales. Our thanks go to Helen for her diligence and for a job well done. She will be missed in the capacity of her office.

Czech Classes At Westchester Spring Branch Evening School The Spring Branch Independent School District is offering an oppor­ tunity to learn to read, write and speak the Czech language in their spring semester classes which will begin at the Westchester Education Center, 901 Yorkchester on Tuesday, February 12, 1991 for the Czech I class and Thursday, February 14, 1991 for the Czech II class.

Registration schedule for these classes is as follows: Jan. 21-24 -- 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Jan. 28-31 -- 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Feb. 2 (Sat.) -- 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club Monthly Meeting Dear Readers, The Dime Box Youth Club held their monthly meeting on December 16 at 3:00 p.m. There were twenty-one members present.

We discussed going Christmas carol­ ing with the local 4-H Club, the Bap­ tist Church and the Girl Scouts on December 19th. After the caroling, we went on a hayride and then ate hot dogs at the Baptist Church.

We will have a bake sale on February 1 at the First State Bank at 4 o'clock. All members are asked to bring something for the sale.

Our next meeting will be on January 20, and we will have a swim party along with our meeting which will be held at the swimming pool in Ledbet­ ter. Everyone is asked to bring chips or cookies.

A.J. was born January 3, 1906 in Hydro, Oklahoma to Henry and Amilia (Voltin) Hoelscher. At an early age, his family returned to Falls County, near Temple, Texas where he helped with the family cotton gin.

Mr. Hoelscher was married to Olga Niehues on November 27, 1934 in Olfen, Texas. In 1937, they built and began operating the cotton gin on the Wall Road beside which he farmed and raised cotton.

In 1953, A.J. began irrigation farm­ ing operations near Pecos, Texas in the Coyonosa Valley. He lived in Pecos until 1987 when he moved back to San Angelo and took up residence at Rio Concho West.

He was a charter member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall and a member of Holy Angel's Catholic Church. He was chairman of the Build­ ing Committee for St. Catherine Catholic Church in Pecos.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Texas Cotton Gin­ ners Association, and served on various farm organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Olga Hoelscher; one daughter, Joyce West of Wichita, Kansas; one son, David Hoelscher of Jackson, Missouri; two granddaughters, Lesley and Amy West; two grandsons, Clayton and Luke Hoelscher; one brother, Leo Hoelscher of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Laura and Mary Schneider, both of Temple, Texas and Rosie Bar­ tek of Cyclone, Texas.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Hoelscher of Olfen and Robert Hoelscher of Cyclone.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Born August 30, 1934 in West, Brother Hutyra had lived all of his life in the same community. A 1953 West High School graduate, he was a veteran serving in the Air Force from 1954 to 1957.

He was employed as a machinest for Wolf Manufacturing Company in West and Waco for thirty-five years.

Brother Hutyra was a member of VFW Post No. 4819 of West, the American Legion in West, the West Bass Club, the Sports Anglers Club, SPJST Lodge No. 54 and also was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of West .

Brother Hutyra married Georgie Bajer on August 19, 1961 in West.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Hutyra; five sons, Douglas and Mark Hutyra, both of Irving, Gregory Hutyra of Arlington, Stephen and David Hutyra, both of West; two daughters, Donna and Debbie Hutyra, both of West; two brothers, Emil Hutyra of Tours and Roy Hutyra of West; three sisters, Evelyn Whitener of Missouri, Dorothy Podsedník of Houston and Ida Drozd of West, plus several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included Mike Hutyra, Roy James Hutyra, Anthony Hutyra, Johnny Hutyra, John Podsedník, Benny Matus, Chip Bajer and Marion Wachel, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were all nieces and nephews, members of VFW Post No. 4819 and members of the American Legion.

(Translator's note: The word for a Moravian used throughout this article is 'Moravec' in the singular form and 'Moravci in the plural. The term Moravec was used only in northeastern Moravia and neighboring Silesia. It is no longer used in Czechoslovakia today.)

The local dialect is also preserved. A person from Haná and his children born here speak the Hanák dialect; those from Valašsko speak the Valach dialect, etc. You may speak with a na­ tive of Valašsko about brick kilns and bricks and without fail during this con­ versation he will always pronounce with great emphasis the words 'tihle' (brick) and 'tíhelna' (brick kiln), so that you understand that for him the correct forms are tÍhle and tlhelna rather than the Czech cihla and cihel­ na.

Our people in Texas, even the second and third generations, read and write Moravian. They subscribe to Moravian newspapers. They attend Moravian churches, where a Moravian priest preaches a Moravian sermon. It is true that at social occasions they joyfully sing the Czech national hymn "Where Is My Home?" But you do not com­ prehend the full vigour of their en­ thusiasm and love towards their native land until they sing "I Am Moravian, That Is My Bride." Even the elderly Judge HaiduŠek in his newspaper SVOBODA argued frequently and quite logically that, just as a Slav born in Bohemia cannot be called a Moravian, so a Slav born in Moravia cannot and should not be called a Czech.

Czechs who settle in Texas after a short time adopt the pleasant sounding Moravian words 'tož' (well) and 'včil' (now) and their children soon speak Moravian. Not long ago our 'dcerka' (daughter) asked us: "How is it that the 'okurky' (pickles) that we eat at home are just like the 'oharky' (pickles) we have at 'stařečku' (grandparents)?"

To the divisions of the Czechoslovak nation ethnographers should add Texas Moravians, who truly form a distinc­ tive category of our people. This is recognized even by visitors who have lived for awhile among our people in Texas. Vojta Beneš always spoke with enthusiasm about the Moravians of Texas.

The circumstances in which Moravians of Texas found themselves, along with their special peculiarities, gave them their own unique character, which does not however detract in any way from their natural open sincerity and good-heartedness.

There are various reasons why Texas Moravians developed their own unique character, but this never arose out of any aver· sion to or dislike of Czechs and it dates from the · period of the earliest settlement of our immigrants in Texas.

It is true that the first families which settled in Texas in the 1850s were from Bohemia, but they were Protes­ tants and were called Moravian Brethren. This church was well-known to Americans by the name Moravians.

These first settlers were thus more kindly received by Americans than were Bohemians, with whom Americans were not familiar and whom they frequently confused with gypsies.

The elderly teacher Josef Holec wrote in his memoirs in 1885: "When we came in the spring of 1855 to the town Cat Spring, ten Czech, three Moravian and ten German families were already settled there." The Czech families were Moravian Brethren by faith, thus Moravians. And then when the other immigrants arrived, who were almost without exception from Moravia, the name Moravian came into general usage among Americans.

Our people stuck by this name alone since. it enjoyed a better reputation than Bohemian.

Thomas Čepak and Dr. Jan Habenicht explained in the following manner why the stream of emigration from Moravia turned to Texas. Before the Austro-Prussian War, Austria was the dominant member of the German confederation of states, Austrian troops were garrisoned together with Germans in many forts in Germany, particularly in Mainz. Before 1848 there was a strong wave of emigration from Germany to Texas. It seems more than probable that German Lutheran soldiers had friendly contacts with Protestants serving in the Austrian ranks. This is the reason that our first immigrants were Protestant.

This began in 1848 with Rev. Ernst Bergmann (born 1797 in Zapudov near Mnichovo Hradiště in Bohemia.) He studied theology in Prussia and later was pastor of the Czech Evangelical church in Stroužný in Prussian Silesia.

Bergmann, who was more German than Czech, left for America in 1848 and settled in Cat Spring in Austin County. From there he wrote his fel­ low-believers enthusiastic letters about the freedom of America and the promise its possibilities offered Texas immigrants.

After Bergmann came Vaclav Matějovský in 1850. In 1852 a whole expedition of Protestant families from the area around Landškroun a¢ved under the leadership of Joseph Siller.

Among them was Joseph Lešikar, patriarch of Texas' numerous Lešikar families. His son still lives in Caldwell. (I will prepare his biography for the next annual kalendář publica­ tion.)

It is not my intent to write for this kalendář the history of Czech immigra­ tion to Texas but rather only to con­ tribute material towards this. In Habenichťs history is a chapter dedi­ cated to Texas. It is very thorough be­ cause it comprises records and material collected for many years by Judge Haidušek and lent to Dr. Habenicht. (Augustín Haidušek is the most competent for this task; He came to Texas in 1856. He was a teacher, judge, representative in the state legis­ lature; he is one of the first Czech lawyers in America. Since 1885 he has been publisher and editor of the week­ ly SVOBODA in La Grange.)

There are, however, certain unclear and disputed points found in the his­ tories previously published, which I shall attempt to clear up one by one in this article. I asked Mr. Ed Batla, clerk in Austin County, if he could find for me in county records which of our countrymen first owned land in Austin County (where the community of Cat Spring is found.) Mr. Batla found in the land records that John Zvolánek (Protestant minister who arrived soon after Bergmann) purchased real estate in 1855 and that Dr. Anton Hanka (a

Czech-German) also purchased land that year. Further, the entry 'Professor B. Bergmann' is recorded in the record of deeds in Bellville. He purchased land there in 1856. ln 1858 a purchase of real estate· was made by Thomas Batla (grandfather of the current coun­ ty clerk E. Batla.)

A reliable source of information is the records of requests for citizenship papers, which contain information about arrival in the United States. This book from the Austin County court­ house lists these names: Mathias Kuna, 1852; Thomas Batla, 1853; Karel Lešikar, Josef Lešikar and John Wotip­ ka, also from 1853. The following recorded the year of their arrival in America as 1854: Jan Zvolánek, John Reymershoffer, Josef Rypl, Josef Shiller and Vincent Shiller. For the year 1855: John Wrlla, Anton Stupl, Thomas Chupík, John Waleček, John Ustynik, Josef Mikeska, Petr Mikeska and John Zapalač.

I turned with the same request to Mr. Albert F. Mach, county clerk in neigh­ boring Fayette County, where almost all of the first settlers in Cat Spring soon immigrated. Mr. Mach informs me that the first record of land transfer for one of our countrymen is for Jin Mužný, who purchased forty acres by the stream of the Bast Navidad on December 6, 1856. He bought this from Ed Brookfield for three dollars an acre. This land now has a value of approximately one hundred dollars an acre. "It is possible," writes Mr. Mach, "that one of our countrymen purchased land prior to this, but Jiři' Mužný is the first recorded in Fayette County land records." In 1859 the following re­ quested citizenship papers in Fayette County: Valentin Hajdušek (sic), Valentin Holub, František Marak, Ignác Šrámek, Frank Kosa, František and Josef Horák, Matěj Novák, Josef Janda and Ignác Mužný. These for the most part arrived in August, 1856 with a large group emigrating from the area surrounding Frenštát in Moravia.

These which requested citizenship papers did not receive them until after the Civil War, when they were issued during the January 1866 session of the county court in La Grange.

It is generally accepted that the first of our countrymen to settle in Texas was Dr. Antonín Dignovitý, who ar­ rived in New York in 1832 and came to Texas in the early 1840s. He settled in San Antonio, where he practiced medicine, although he studied en­ gineering in Europe. (Dr. Habenicht states that he studied medicine at a college in Cincinnati, Ohio.) Dr. Dig­ novitý left Texas in 1850, however; and lived an adventurous life in the Wild West. In 1842 he married an American in Little Rock, Arkansas and in 1856 he returned to San Antonio, where he died in 1875 at the age of sixty-five. He had no influence on Czech immigration to Texas since he lived apart from his countrymen in Texas. His descendants do not claim their Slavic origin, although according to. Čepak, his son A.F. Dignovitý in 1888 in the newspaper POKROK ZÁPADU advertised vast lands for a Czech colony in Kinney County, Texas, which never materialized. The . elder Dignovitý was thoroughly a Czech and a patriot. In 1859 he wrote and published in New York a brochure in English: BOHEMIA UNDER AUSTRIAN DESPOTISM. There are different figures cited for the number of our people in Texas. I think, however, that the figure of 50,000 is most accurate. Of these, ap­ proximately 80 percent are of the Catholic faith. Texas has more Czech Catholic parishes than any other state

in the United States. About 15 percent belong to the Protestant churches (mainly Czech-Moravian Brethren).

The remaining five percent are Free Thinkers. I include here only those who consciously identify themselves as Free Thinkers and I have calculated their number according to the member­ ship of CSPS in Texas, of eight Free Thinking circles and a handful of ac­ tive Free Thinkers grouped around Volná MyŠlenka. (Translator's note: v .,. <;esko-slovansky podporujte" ( spolek CSPS - was a fraternal organization founded in St. Louis in 1854.) It is true that the organization SPJST has more members than all other Czech fraternal societies in Texas combined, but its members are Catholics, Protestants and Free Thinkers.

The first Czech organization in Texas was the Czechoslovak Reading Club, founded in 1869 at the Protestant community of Wesley in Washington County. About a year later Protestants at Ross Prairie in Fayette County founded the organization Osvěta, which supported a Czech school. The first Catholic organization was not founded until after the arrival of the first Czech Catholic priest in Texas in 1872. This was Rev. Joseph Chromčík (born in Řepčín near Olomouc), a patriot priest whose piety is remem­ bered not only by his fellow-believers but by all of our countrymen with whom he came into contact, including the first Protestant ministers Opočenský and Juren and tlie deceased leader of Texas Free Thinkers, Ant. Kulhánek. The first ČSPS society in Texas was Lodge Texan in Praha, Fayette County, admitted to the na­ tional organization on April 13, 1884

by M. Kirchman of Chicago, who the following day entered the second Texan society; Czech-Moravian in El­ linger.

Czech Schools in Texas When the inevitable moment finally comes when the last Czech vanishes completely into the American melting pot of all nations of the earth, we ex­ pect that this Last Czech-American Mohican will be from Texas. You in the north shake your heads about what to do with our third generation, which you are losing and which is vanishing into the melting pot of one hundred percent Americanism more quickly than camphour in the wind. We in Texas are not disturbed by this. In the first place, it doesn't help to get upset at this; secondly, we here are about one generation ahead of you. We have a certain advantage, as a result of cer­ tain educational conditions which were found here by immigrants in the 1850s and 1860s.

In that day there were almost no schools in the sparsely settled wilder­ ness. Our first pioneers began to found their own Czech, or more accurately, "Moravian" schools here. This was in fact the golden age of Czech schools in America, in spite of their scarcity and the poverty in which parents and, even more so, teachers lived.

Sources conflict about who was the first Czech teacher in Texas. Former teacher Jos. Holec in his memoirs writ­ ten in 1885 wrote that when he came to Cat Spring in 1855 the ten Czech, three Moravian and ten German Protestant families had built a small church in which the Czech preacher Bergmann taught.

"What Rev. Bergmann taught I do not know," con­ tinued Holec. "I heard that among other things he taught German." Rev. Bergmann, although born in Bohemia,

The Czech language has one ?f the most phonetic alphabets of all m the Indo-European languages of the world. There are thirty-one characte:s plus q, x and w which are used only m foreign words. The letters of the Cze~h alphabet are patterned on the Latm alphabet which has been expanded by the use of diacritical marks, called čárka, kroužek a háček to create addi­ tional sounds.

1. Past Tense in Czech is made up of

jet - jel vézt - vezl říc/říct - řekl chtít - chtěl vést - vedl vzít - vzal nést - nesl (nést - to carry in a hand, vést - to carry in a vehicle, vést - to lead, guide) The ending of the participle should agree with the gender of the subject of the sentence. In the plural, where in­ dividual subjects of different gender can meet, the masculine subject has priority over the feminine subject.

Observe: Muži pili pivo. Ženy pily limonádu. Strýc a teta pili slivovic. V kině běžely zajímavé filmy. Chlapi běželi domů. The auxiliary verb jsem, jsi, etc. is enclitic. It bears no stressand cannot stand at the beginning of the sentence. Its stable position is among other enclitics (se, si, ho, ji, etc.) im­ mediately after the first sentence member.

Observe: Včera jsem viděl zajímavý film.

Karel ho ještě nikdy neviděl.

Učili jsme se celou sobotu a neděli.
