*** The year 1991 A.D. is here and we begin another 10-year entrance into the future. For some it will be a slow walk, some a brisk trot, some a fast gait and some a headlong plunge depending mostly on the makeup of any particular individual!

Yes, in the past are the holidays of Christmas and New Year 1990 and it is back to work as usual, except that many will not have that privilege, having been laid off or unlucky enough to be among those whose posi­ tion or job has been terminated.

The main consolation is that it al­ most certainly will not be as the "big depression" of the 1930s which your editor remembers vividly including the "dust bowl" days of that era. Some things learned in those days was how to live on little income and not to plow up every inch of soil and see it picked up and "gone with the wind."

We did not learn much from the gasoline lines in 1973 when we should have formed a policy of being "energy independent" for the future and here we are in 1990-1991 not any better off than in the past years. It seems as if our politicians' main ideal and effort in life remain to be elected and then forget that there is a future to plan for.

It seems that, again, this year in the season and area of life of the "Prince of Peace" is a case of conflict and threat of war! How we rejoiced in 1989-1990 when the "Cold War" ended and lo and behold it did NOT last long! Yours truly sincerely, honestly and earnestly hopes for "Peace and Good Will Toward All Men" will prevail. May it be sol

The five most expressive words --Dr. Wilfred Funk, of Funk and Wag­ nalls, who publish dictionaries, is per­ haps the nation's greatest expert in the use of EngJish words. When asked to select the five most expressive words in our language, Dr. Funk's reply was: The five most expressive words in our language are an integral part of the life insurance business, as we see it.

Here are the words and how we believe they should be used: The most bitter word is "ALONE." We feel the chill air which blows about the older man or woman who must live in the state of dependency.

They are indeed lonely ones. They are alone.

The most tragic word is "DEATH." It is especially tragic when death cuts off a man before he has discharged his. highest social responsibility--the care of his family. That is death as a tragedy.

The comforting word is "FAITH." To believe in someone, to know he will never fail, is one of the great experien­ ces. To back that faith by the pledge of life insurance completes the picture.

The most beautiful word is "LOVE." You need not talk with a father about his love for his family. AH you need to do is to tum his mind for the moment from the world of business to the word of home. Then he, himself, will feel the love about which the agents hesitate to talk.

The coldest word is "NO," which at times can be sub-zero cold. Rather we are thinking of all the "no's" which the family of the under-insured man may receive. "No, you can have no further credit ...No, the payments are long overdue, you must go some place else ...No, don't try to enter college, unless you have at least $25,000 ...No, you will have to send your little girl to the charity ward at the city hospi­ tal...N o, we are not taking on older women without experience .. .No, No, No ... echoing always down through the corridors of the years."

*** Getting a good deal on a car will take more homework following Ford's recent decision to end customer rebates on most models and give them to dealers instead. At least through February, dealers are free to pocket the cash, use it in advertising or pass on some or all to car buyers. Buyers un­ prepared to wrangle will pay: A new Ford Taurus GL sedan, for example, now costs $13,582, $750 more than it did with last month's rebate. Neither Ford nor the dealers are advertising the amounts of the new dealer rebates. But you can find them in most weeks' "In­ centive Watch" column of Automotive News, a trade magazine available in many libraries. In most cases, they match the $500-to-$750 customer rebates that expired December 11th.

The person to bargain with is the sales manager; some salesmen won't know about the incentives. Still in place are $500 buyer discounts on 1991 Escorts, Festivas and Mercury Tracers, and $1,000 discounts on 1991 Mercury Grand Marquises. At Chrysler and General Motors, buyer rebates will likely continue. Most foreign-car makers don't currently offer buyer in­ centives.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard The first meeting of 1991 for Lodge Karel Jonáš is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 6th in its lodge hall home. The agenda will fol­ low the general "Order of Business" but will be open. A NEW local rule goes into effect with this meeting. If the temperature HIGH of the day of the meeting is 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C) OR LOWER, the meeting will be AUTOMATICALLY CAN· CELLED. This rule will be a standing rule from now on.

A fraternal hour with a light lunch­ eon will convene after the business meeting.

The December monthly meeting was held on the 2nd and being the annual meeting, had a lot of business to hand­ le. All officers holding office at the end of the year were re-elected to their respective posts for 1991. Several mo­ tions were made and passed to handle lodge buisness for 1991 including the above-mentioned rule. Donations were made to the E.B.V.F.D., E.B.V.E.M.T.'s, S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home No. II and the County Abused Children Program. Also, the lodge gave food to a needy individual both on Thanksgiving and for Christmas.

This last item was handled by our FAC Brother A.J. "Tony" Kelner and his wife and Lodge Secretary Sister Helen Kelner.

The fraternal hour with its luncheon went smoothly with everyone having enough to eat and the conversation being good. The following members donated the food and drink; Sisters Haverda, Craig, Kasmir. Kortis and Kelner along with Brother "Tony" Kel­ ner and this writer. If anyone is left off this list, it is because they did not sign in on the donation list.

Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth Dear Members and Friends: Today is a nice, sunny and warm day. I suppose it's nice so everyone can get their last minute shopping done. I hope everyone had ' a nice Christmas and enjoyed their children and grandchildren. This is also the time for families to get-together at least one time during the year.

December 9 was the four-lodge Christmas Party which was a success­ ful occasion. Lodge 92 was filled with members from Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183. The dinner was very tasty and with plenty of food. Martha Janca catered this meal which was turkey with all the trimmings, which was like home-style.

Many ladies brought cakes, pies and kolaches. There was food all evening if someone wished to eat.

District III Director Sid Pokladník asked all the elected lodges' officers to come to the front and he asked them if all present were satisfied with the elected officers and the answer was "yes" (loud), so Brother Pokladník in­ stalled the newly-elected officers and asked they continue the good work which was done in the past. He also thanked the past officers to keep in touch with their lodge and help out whenever needed.

Brother Pokladník with his wife, Jus­ tine, stayed most of the evening visit­ ing with different members and also dancing a little.

Before the meal, Brother Sid Poklad­ ník, led us in a very nice prayer and gave thanks for all the blessings we have had.

Afterwards, our Lodge 92 Memory Makers sang some fine songs. This group is just starting but they are doing fine singing Czech and English songs.

We kidded them by saying that some day they could be on TV. One of the singers replied: "The only way this could be possible was to stand on a TV cabinet but, not kidding, they are a fine group of singers.

About 3 p.m., Eric Honza of Ennis starting playing music. with different types of music: I suppose some of the members, after coming to our hall before noon and the evening program were tired so they started to leave early because some had to work next day, some had children who needed to get to bed and school Monday morn­ ing.

The party was very nice and it seemed everyone enjoyed talking to members they haven't seen lately. It also seemed as if some of the members get to see each other only on a special occasion.

Many thanks to those members who brought pastries from other lodges, also our thanks to the ladies of Lodge 92 who helped in any way to make this a wonderful day which was greatly ap­ preciated. There were some Lodge 92 ladies who brought cakes for our cake walk which was held during intermis­ sion. This was done to help defray ex­ penses for the meal and orchestra.

A few years ago the cost of these parties wasn't so expensive, but, now it really is costly. The free drinks also were omitted this year, however, those who wanted drinks could buy them at the bar. The party ..-started about 11 a.m. and ended 11 p.m. so you see it was a long day.

December 16 was our own Lodge 92 Christmas Party for the youngsters.

Santa Claus was also going to be present. At 8 a.m. Sunday several

members came to the hall to help with bagging of fruit, nuts and candy which is alway lots of fun getting these bags prepared; usually, a line is formed like an assembly line that goes fast, with lots of joking which helped us keep up the spirits so early in the morning.

Afterwards, we also enjoyed some­ thing to drink and snack on. We made up 250 packages for Santa to distribute for those present and some were taken to· the rest home or to shut-ins at home.

I don't know if this will be in the Vestnik before New Year's but, if not, here's wishing all my fellow members a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

I wish to thank some of our members here and from other lodges who read my articles in the Vestnik which makes a person feel good when we, the lodge reporters, have someone say: "They enjoy the write-ups."

However, I didn't write for the past two weeks because I had an operation on my left eye which seems I've lost vision due to a cataract and had to have an implant that took more than one stitch (about eight), so it still isn't completely well. I had this operation done on my eye on November 27 which will take a 'while to get ad­ justed, but I hope to be able to see to keep writing for next year, again.

The youth club had a fine program at the Christmas Party on December 16; none of these youngsters were stage frightened. We hope when these young members grow up they will take our places in the lodge some day.

Since we didn't have a lodge meet­ ing in December, I didn't hear of any sick members. However, I've heard Sister Ann Zurovetz was operated on two weeks ago in the hospital but is now at home; Sister Bennie Bartek fell but I understand nothing wasn't hurt, except her pride. Helen Kubala had to go to the hospital Monday, December 17 who had a hard time breathing but is home now. We are sending our best wishes to all who are sick and hope all of you will be well. Also for all our service men and women to be safe and return home, soon.

During our family fun-night held each first and third Tuesday night of the month, we are doing real good by more and more members attending and having fun playing Taroky, poker or "42." If you wish to have a good time, start attending these game nights.

I understand the cold weather is about here so be sure to take care of your car radiator and house plants that have been outside for the summer which need to be inside.

Please notice the change of time for our January meeting, I p.m. due to the dance. which will be following our meeting. This will be a depression dance so come dressed in the late 1920's and 1930's attire. The former Czech Makes now known as The Vil­ lage Alpine Band will be playing beginning at 3 p.m.

We want to thank all the members and friends who came to our dances throughout the past year and we also hope they will continue in the future because we will try to show everyone a good time.

Lodge No.142, Houston Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hennis on Sunday, December 9, 1990.

We had· sixty members and nine guests who stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Roll call of officers was held by Secretary Alice Jochen; all were present, except Board Chairman Robert Kieschnick.

Our secretary read the minutes from the previous meeting, which stood ap­ proved as read without any correc­ tions. All other officers' reports were also read.

We welcomed visitors, Frieda Kieschnick, Jo Ann Buri, Joe Gambii, Jennifer Watson, Mike Watson, Jo Buri, Regina Heinrich and Elizabeth Kieschnick.

A GREAT TURNOUT FOR A FINE PARTY.

While we were talking about the old days, we heard some polka music and learned they were having a dance that evening. I remarked to John Lacina how good it was to hear some good music for a change. He persuaded us to stay for the dance. We had a wonderful time. I hadn't danced a polka for many years, but my wife is a good dancer and it didn't take us long to get into the swing of things. The people there were so nice and friendly and made us feel at home. Older folks as well as children were dancing and I couldn't help but think what a wholesome or­ ganization for families it was.

My brother Alton and his wife Emily are members of Lodge No. 88. The next day he introduced me to VESTNIK. If I were a resident of Texas, I would make an effort to be­ come a member of SPJST. Anyway, I would like to subscribe to the VESTNIK and have enclosed a check for $14,00. I enjoyed ;'The Editor Comments." We hope you and your family will have a wonderful Christmas season.

The trip my wife, Joan, and I took to Texas last October was memorable for several reasons. Not only did we enjoy seeing the many members of my fami­ ly, but I also was able to meet with several of my school mates who I had not seen for over fifty years. I got to see Roy Bucek, Albin Lux and Emil Pesek in Schulenburg. In Houston, we met with John and Edwin Lacina and their lovely wives. This meeting took place at SPJST Lodge No. 88.

Ladies Circle Of Lodge 92, Ft. Worth The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 met on December 11 at 1 O a.m. Vice Presi­ dent Lillie McMillan called the meet­ ing to order at 10:30 a.m.

After a short business meeting, the Nominating Committee presented a slate of officers for the 1991 new year.

Czech Language Class At Alief Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a Conversational Czech course in the beginning of February '91 at Hastings High School. The loca­ tion of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the South and Alief-Clodine on the North, on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Rd. and High Star Dr. in the community of Alief in southwestern Houston. Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Activities Dear Members and Friends, The SPJST Youth Club held their meeting on December 2 at 2:30 p.m. with a good attendance.

On November 30, the club members decorated Lodge No. 6 hall which was very pretty and afterwards, we ate sup­ per that night at our lodge.

On December 1, we went to Holiday­ in-the-Park at Six Flags with District III Youth Club and we really enjoyed it very much.

Then, on December 2, we held our mother lodge meeting at 1 p.m. and youth club meeting at 2:30 p.m. with social and supper at 5 p.m. After sup­ per, we had a Christmas program which .consisted of "The Smallest Star" skit by our youth who did real well. I want to thank everyone for helping with the program. Afterwards Santa Claus came and talked to all the youngsters and gave out bags of fruit; then, we gave out gifts to all of those who brought gifts to be distributed later that were placed under our Christmas tree. The Christmas Party was well attended. I want to thank all of you for the nice gifts you gave me.

Thank you very much!

On December 5, we brought cakes to West Rest Haven and on December 17, we brought Christmas gifts to all the residents at West Rest Haven.

We will start on new crafts and items after New Year's Day. I would like for all Lodge No. 6 youth members to at­ tend and work on craft items. We will also have games so all of you come to our Friday night socials. Everyone is welcome.

Then, the kids played their games again.

We left at 3:45 p.m. to go to Holiday-in-the Park. It was really fun and neat. The shows were great and the park was really pretty and lit up.

Everyone enjoyed it and had a great time.

We look forward to next year so we can do it again.

CHAD DOROTIK Chad Dorotik is the six-year-old son of Anthony and Wanda Dorotik. Chad has two brothers, Craig and Curtis and one sister, Jeanine. Chad likes to play baseball and helps his Dad drive the tractor. Chad attends El Campo Myatt Elementary where he is in kindergar­ ten. Chad also attends St. John's CCD classes.

Brother Prikryl was born November 9, 1902 in Penelope where he lived all his life. He owned and operated a grocery store in Penelope.

He was a member of the WOW Lodge and SPJST Lodge No. 167, Penelope.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Prikryl of Penelope; one son, Edward Prikryl of Florida; two daughters, Pauline Malik of Arizona and Regina Pistor of Dallas; eight grandchildren and four great­ grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Thursday, November 29 at Wade Funeral Home in Hubbard with Lori Ellen Pistor officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery in Penelope, Texas.

The members and officers of Lodge No. 48, Beyersville wish to express deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother WILLIE B. KONAREK. Brother Konarek, age 70, died Satur­ day. October 20, 1990 in Sweetbriar Nursing Home.

Brother Konarek was born Septem­ ber 20, 1920 in Beeville, the son of the late Johanna Annie (Strnad) and Willie B. Konárek, Sr. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Beyersville

SPJST Lodge. He was a retired farmer and was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 2 p.m., with Rev. Lonnie Urban officiating. Military services were held at St. Mary's Church Cemetery.

Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Konarek and Jannie Konarek of Thrall; a brother, Albert W. Konarek of Taylor and several nieces and nephews.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 186, Caldwell express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister BESSIE DRGAC CHALOUPKA, 85, of Cooks Point, who died Friday evening, October 26, 1990 in a Bryan hospital.

She was born October 17, 1905 in Snook to the late Joseph D. Drgac and Anna Marie Sebesta. She spent most of her life at Cooks Point where she worked as a bookkeeper and clerk at the Cooks Point Store, a business her family owned for 36 years. She attended school in Cooks Point.

She was an active member of Cooks Point Brethren Church where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years, played the pump organ and sang in the choir.

She married Wilton Chaloupka on November 12, 1930. They would have been married sixty years.

Mrs. Chaloupka was a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell, the Cooks Point Mutual Aid Society, where she was secretary and a member of the Burleson-Lee Soil Conservation District and a past member of the Burleson County Historical Society. She and her husband, Wilton, donated the building for the Soil Conservation District in Burleson County.

Her family said she would be remembered for her love of growing flowers, cattle, her love of all animals, her active service to the community and for her cooking. A family member said she made the best raisin rolls.

She also helped maintain the Slovak Cemetery and the Cooks Point Cemetery.

Mrs. Chaloupka was preceded in · death by her parents; four brothers, Walter Drgac, William Drgac, Joe Drgac and Johnnie Drgac; and six sisters, Annie Hronek, Lydia Kubena, Olga Urbanovsky, Milady Kubena, Al­ bina Meyer and Ella Luksa.

Survivors include her husband, Wil­ ton Chalpouka of Cooks Point; two brothers, Ed Drgac and wife Fannie of Cooks Point, Frank Drgac and wife Milady of Cooks Point; also four sisters-in-law, Naomi Lerret of San Antonio, Mattie Chaloupka, Tracy and Robert Wine and Annie Lee Mrnustik, all of Caldwell, plus numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A prayer service was held at 7 p.m.

Sunday at Strickland Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. from Cooks Point Brethren Church with Rev. Norman Haisler and Rev. John Gantt, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at Cooks Point Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Hronek, Leon Kubena, Brad Albright, Fred Jurecka, Marvin Kubena, Lamar Drgac, Dwight Hattermann, Hubert Drgac and Craig Homeyer.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 1.86, Caldwell express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother EDWARD V. MAREK, 63, of Caldwell, who died Sunday, Oc­ tober 28, 1990 in a Bryan hospital.

Funeral services for Edward V. Marek were held Wednesday, October 31 at 10 a.m. from the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home. There was a prayer service held at 7:30 p.m. Tues­ day, October 30 with Rev. Henry E. Beseda officiating. Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

Brother Marek was a lifelong resident of Burleson County, living in Chriesman and in Caldwell. He was born November 9, 1926 in Chriesman to the late Ed and Lucille "Simonton" Marek. He was a retired truck driver for Nagel Wire Manufacturing. He and Martha Jean Beran were married on December 1, 1973 in Cameron.

Brother Marek served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Bouganville, and received an Honorable Discharge as a Seaman First Class. He enjoyed reading Western novels and horses, enjoyed watching rodeos and boxing on TV, and 'traveling but, most of all, he loved to drink coffee with his friends and telling jokes.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186 in Caldwell, VFW Post 4458 and Caldwell United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by one sister and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Jean Marek of Caldwell; one son, Ron­ nie Marek and wife Reba of Caldwell; one daughter, Cynthia Yendrey and husband Willie of Caldwell; two step­ daughters, Shirley Macik and husband Lonnie of Bryan and Janice Ofczarzak and husband Mark of Caldwell; two sisters, Iona Bond of Caldwell and Dorothy Neal Smallwood of Kemp, Texas; also one granddaughter, Tammy Marek and three step­ grandchildren, Billy Brown, Kelly Macik and Megan Macik.

Arrangements were by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Luksa was born in the Seymour community in western Brazos County and lived in Cooks Point for many years. She was educated in the Cooks Point schools. She was a retired clerk, and had worked for the Cooks Point Store for 30 years and for the Perry Brothers Store in Caldwell for five years.

She loved raising flowers and baking kolaches, and regularly visited the sick in her community.

Mrs. Luksa was active in the Cooks Point Brethren Church, where she

taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was a member of the choir, served as treasurer of the Christian Sisters and was secretary of the Church Cemetery Board.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186, Caldwell.

her husband, Rudolph Luksa, on December 11, 1979.

Survivors include two brothers, and sisters-in-law, Ed and Fannie Drgac and Frank and Milady Drgac, all of Cooks Point; a sister and brother-in­ law, Bessie and Wilton Chaloupka of Cooks Point and several nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a farmer and rancher and a mem­ ber of the Taylor Brethren Church, Beyersville SPJST Lodge, VFW and American Legion. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II. Private family services were held Wednesday, November 21 at 10 a.m. at Condra Memorial Chapel in Taylor with the Rev. James Hejl officiating.

Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

JOHN F. JURCIK, Brother Bolf was born in Grandfield, age 88, who passed away Tuesday Oklahoma. He was a farmer.

Funeral services were held Thursday, afternoon at his home in Ennis.

Brother Jurik was born December 6, August 23 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond, Texas. 1901 in Crisp to John and Mary Knize Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Jurik. He was reared in Crisp where he attended school. He and his wife lived Park at Rosenberg.

A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. at in Corsicana where he was employed by the Stroube family for several Davis Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Survivors include his wife, Annie· years.

In 1930 he was married to Miss Bolf of Richmond; a daughter, An­ nabel Sechelski of Old Ocean; a son, Louise Dvorak of Ennis. He was a William Bolf of Comanche; a sister, partner in John and John Garage with Angeline Shockley of Levelland; a John Dlabaj. Mrs. Jurik preceded him brother, Robert Bolf of DeLeon and in death on May 14, 1948. He retired in 1966. eleven grandchildren.

Brother Jurik was a member of St. Brother Bolf was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest James Bolf and John's Catholic Church, the KJT, SPJST Lodge No. 25, Sokol and the Marvin Louis Bolf.

Brother Trojacek was born in Ennis on January 31, 1926 to Willie and Be­ ssie Jabolimek Trojacek. He was a graduate of Ennis High School in 1943. One Of A Kind

Havel is using his position as a plat­ form to expound on a political philosophy developed over 20 years of writing.

His voice is gravelly from years of chain-smoking, he sometimes mumbles or bumps into the mircrophone, but his words are clear, simple and direct: "Totalitarianism deforms the human soul. People in Czechoslovakia are constantly asking me about ways to implement the new freedom. And I tell them implement it in any way you wish."

He is one of a kind, an artist-states­ man and the darling of the intel­ ligentsia: Kurt Vonnegut, Zubin Mehta, Paul Simon, Edward Albee in New York; in Paris, an all-star cast led by actor Alain Delon; Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter and Jeremy Irons among the guests at a reception given by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Lon­ don.

"In the United States we encountered almost embarrassing adulation," §aid Havel's spokesman Michael Zan­ tovský. "They treated him as if he were some kind of modem prophet, and he is not particularly eager to be­ come one."

Instead he is modest, shy, prone to blush. He deflects attention with humor and irony. He stands behind tables and against walls, away from the center of the room. At one point he. even managed somehow to hunch his short frame under a loudspeaker.

Except for the suit and tie, there is little to distinguish Havel the presi­ dent.

"The reception he gets is something we have been absolutely unprepared for," Žantovský said. "It really is too much of a good thing."

Havel clearly enjoys the drama of his situation and the theatricality of the presidency. The new uniforms he pick­ ed to replace the drab khaki of com­ munism on the palace honor guard, for example, were created by the costume designer for Miloš Forman's film, "Amadeus."

But Havel's performance abroad is unrehearsed and improvisation is not without pitfalls.

A British TV commentary described him as "refreshingly naive." After .shaking hands with Prince Phillip on -.the stately steps of Buckingham Palace, he wiped his sweaty palm on .his pants, apparently unaware that the nation would see it on TV. As The Times of London put it: "Havel is an idea whose man has come."

There is a lot of speculation that the Slovak people want an independent nation, separate from the Czechs, that groups from out­ side of Czechoslovakia are encourag­ ing the formation of a separate Czech and Slovak state or nation, that the Moravians and Silesians want more autonomy for themselves, etc. Kevin Hannan has written about· some of these concerns and speculations in ar­ ticles published in the Vestnik. It must be remembered that a lot of personal feelings have been suppressed during the Communist rule in Czechos­ lovakia. Now that the light of freedom

shines in Czechoslovakia, people, both those inside and those outside of that­ country, are expressing their sup­ pressed personal feelings, but this does not mean that there is any definitive action being taken to divide the country.

When Slavic people first migrated into Europe they, of necessity, came in contact with people of non-slavíc origin and speech. They should be encouraged to remain united so that they, as a nation, can take their rightful place in the so­ cial, economic and political structure of Europe.

Flu season approaches, and new products promise relief. Johnson and Johnson's Tylenol Cold and Flu and Warner-Lambert's Medi-Flu (as well as Sandoz's TheraFlu, new last year) may make flu sufferers feel better=but probably no better than ordinary multi­ symptom cold drugs will. The flu drugs contain the same active in­ gredients as many cold drugs, at roughly the same dosages.

Most doctors, moreover, don't recommend treating colds or the flu with multisymptom remedies, which typically contain a pain reliever, an an­ tihistamine, a decongestant and a cough suppressant. They prefer single­ ingredient drugs to treat each symptom, so you avoid unneeded drugs. Taking a pain reliever when you complaint is a cough, for example, Editor's note: You are so correct. All may reduce a mild fever, which many of the people in Czechoslovakia doctors say is unnecessary, since mild should remember the proverb: "United fever is part of the body's infection­ we stand; divided we fall!" Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary Celebrants William and Anna Leshlkar of Fort Worth celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner and dance, which they served as hosts of, November 24, 1990 at SPJST (Slavonic Benevolent Order) National Hall, Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth. Their children and their spouses are Lynwood and Harriet Lesikar of Fort Worth, and Pat and Steve Hungerpiller of North Augusta, South Carolina. They have eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The Lesikars were married November 27, 1930, in Temple. She is the former Anna Fojtasek of Rogers, and he is a native of Temple. Mr. Lesikar worked 15 years at Armour and Company and is a retired building contractor. They have lived in Fort Worth 51 years. They are members of SPJST Lodge No. 92.

Couple Celebrates Golden Wedding Anniversary Adolph and Evelyn Salac of Dallas celebrated their "50th" wedding an­ niversary on November 10, 1990 with a reception, dinner and a dance at SPJST Lodge No. 84. They were honored with three hundred guests attend­ ing. They were also honored previously with a 50th Anniversary Mass celebrated by the former Bishop of Dallas, Rev. 'Fhomas Tschoepe. At the reception, friends, Brother Paul Pokladník and Brother Cyrill "Sid" Pok· ladnik gave interesting facts about their life and work careers. Brother Sid ended by leading the prayer before dinner. Adolph and Evelyn were mar­ ried on November 12, 1940 at St. Cyrill and Methodíus Catholic Church at Marak, Texas. They have made their home in Dallas since then. They both are active members at Lodge No. 84.

Vážení krajané, Miroslava Zedníková od prvního čtvrtletí roku 1991 začneme vydávat čtvrtletník se zaměřením na Při Masarykově unizerzitě v Brně literaturu a hudbu. Státní návštěva SS prezidenta v CSFR v listopadu 1990 Prezident Václav Havel ve svém pro­ jevu vyslovilnaléhavý apel adresovaný celé společnosti, apel k rozumu a slušnesti.!

V posledních letech a hlavně v posledních měsících před loňským listopadem většina z nás asi cítila, že. napětí ve společnostirychleroste a pro­ past mezi světem oficiálních řečí a světem skutečným se neuvěřitelně pro­ hlubuje. Tušili jsme, že to tak dál nemůže pokračovat a že se něco musí stát. Nikdo z nás ale nevěděl, kdy se to stane a jak se to stane. Nikdo z nás nevěděl, co bude onou kapkou, kterou přeteče pohár, nebo onou sněhovou koulí, která uvede do pohybu lavinu.

Lavinu uvedli do pohybu studenti, kteří se loni rozhodli připomenout si památku Jana Opletala a Mezinárodní den studenstva nezávisloumanifestací.

Co po ní následovalo, je všeobecně známo.

Uplynul rok.

A my tu všichni dnes stojíme trochu rozpačitě. Víme velmi dobře, co všechno je ještě třeba vykonat, a klademe si otázku, proč nám jde společné dílo tak těžce, zda jsme podcenili dědictví starého režimu, či přecenili sebe samé, zda nám společnou prací někdo záměrně zdržu­ je a kazí, anebo zda si ji kazíme sami.

A docela právem se dnes ptáme: proč se nepodařilo za celý rok ani to, co se zdálo být původně ze všeho nejsnazší, totiž vyšetřit všechny okolnosti loňského masakru a potrestat jeho skutečnéviníky? Proč nebyl dán důsto­ jným a právním způsobem- plný průchod historické spravedlnosti?Proč naše politické ovzduší je otráveno jedem demagogie a politické, národ­ nostní i rasové nesnášenlivosti? Proč poté, co jsme tak humánním způsobem svrhli nehumánní režim, roste tak závratně kriminalita?

Na každou z takových a podobných otázek existuje mnoho různých věchných odpovědí a vysvětlení. Ty však neměnínic na základním faktu, že se v naší společnosti rychle šíří nespokojenost, nervozita, nejistota, netrpělivost a zklamání. Je to pochopitelné a mohlo by to být dokonce i k něčemu dobré: vždyť přesně tato netrpělivost může vytvářet tlak, který si vynutí, aby společenské změny probíhaly rázněji a rychleji.

Nervozita a netrpělivost - samy o sobě -mi velmi starost nedělají.

Za daleko horší povážuji to co je stále častéji provází: nevraživost,závist i přebujelá ctižádost. Zdá se mi, že ná~ veřejný život je těmito vlastnostmi stále zřetelněji infikován.

Což jsme opravdu národ, který dovede probudit k životu své dobré vlastnostivždyckyjen jednou za dvacet let a jenom na pár měsíců? Což jsme opravdu národem, který se dokáže jen mlčky podrobovat, a když pohár nakonec přeteče, předhánět se naopak jenom v siláckýchřečech a vzájemném obviňování?

Nechce se mi věřit, že tohle je naše jediná a hlavní historická alternativa.

Nechce se mi věřit, že by i v českých a slovenských duších a v českém a slovenském veřejném životě nemohla natrvalo převážit laskavá moudrost.

Několik studentů vyzvalo své spoluobčany k tomu, aby dnešní shromáždění věnovali jakési meditaci o sobě samých. Ano, zkusme se dnes zamyslet sami nad sebou! Zkusme o svém veřejném životě přemýšlet klidně, s nadhledem a ve světle vlastm'ho svědomí! Zkusme sami na sebe pohléd­ nout i z širšího, takříkajíc všelidského hlediska a zkusme si uvědomit, jaké asi obrysy má naše často až provinciálně zabedněné počínání v očích civilizovaného světa!

Za velmi dobrý impuls k tomuto druhu sebezpytování považuji radostný fakt, že nás právě dnes poctívá svou návštěvou představitel jedné z nejstarších demokracií světa, nejvyšší představitel velkého a svobodomyslného národa, prezident Spojených států amerických pan George Bush.

Před více-než dvěma sty lety se tento nově vzniklý stát nacházel ve velmi podobné situaci, v jaké se nalézáme my dnes. Nová demokracie byla vystavena těžkým zkoužkám. Zda finanční a hospodářská situace, pochybnosti o mezinárodním postavení země a spory mezi jednotlivými státy konfederace i mezi politiky vedly často až k obavám o budoucnost a celistvost země. Přijetí americké ústavy bylo vážně ohroženo.

V nejvýznamnějším politickém dokumentu té doby, Federalistických esejích, hodnotil Alexander Hamilton situaci takto: Mezi nejvážnějšími překážkami, s nimiž se přijetí nové ústavy musí potýkat, lze snadno roz­ poznat zřejmý zájem určité skupiny lidí v každém státě bránit se všem změnám, které hrozí omezenim jejich moci, zisků a významu úřadů, které zastávají, a zvrácená ctižádost jiné skupiny lidí, kteří chtějí získat prospěch ze zmatků panujících v zemi.

Tyto řádky by mohly být napsány o naší zemi i dnes. Optimismus lze čerpat z toho, že Spojené státy svou tehdejší krizi překonaly a staly se pevným útočištěm demokracie pro vlasstní občany a zdrojem inspirace a naděje pro ty, kdo trpí útlakem a nesvobodou v jiných zemích.

Jak toho Spojené státy dosáhly a jak toho můžeme dosáhnout my? V první řadě se v Americe podařilo dosáhnout shody o základním zákonu země, americké ústavě, která pevně zakotvila a dodnes chrání základní lidská práva a svobody: svobodu slova, přesvědčení, shromážďování a sdružování, jakož i svobodu obracet se na vládu se žádostmi a stížnostmi.

V druhé řadě se podařilo přesvědčit americké zákonodárce o nutnosti silné federální vlády, která si však ponechala jen ty nejnutnější pravomoce, potřebné k výkonu státní suverenity; 'zajištění obranyschopnosti země, k hájení mezinárodního postavení Spojených států jako celku a k. volnému šíření hmotných i nehmotných statků v celé zemi.

Všechny ostatní věci ponechala v pracomoci států a lidu.

Především však Američané tím, že zachovali rozsáhlou decentralizaci moci, ponechali volné ruce svobodnému rozhodování a tvořivé energii. Toto rozhodnutí bylo výrazem důvěry v soudnost a mravní vědomí svobodného občana, výrazem vědomí, že občan i stát jsou vůči sobě zodpovědni pouze ve věcech vymezených zákonem, výrazem přesvědčení, že občané dokáží spravovat mnohé své záležitosti lépe, než by to dokázal stát.

Demokratická prosperující Amerika je výsledkem úsilí celých generací

svobodných občanů. Nemáme jiné ces­ ty než vyvinout totéž úsilí, hledat chyby každý sám v sobě a trvat na své svobodě, aniž bychom omezovali svobodu druhých.

Vážení přátelé, před rokem zvítězil svobodymilovný duch našich národů nad násilím a totalitou. Věřím, že nyní zvítězí v každém z nás rozum, slušnost a

tolerance nad řevnivostí, sobectvím a nesnášenlivostí.

. Features Here are ~ doze~ ways to be right: 1) Bear in mind that everybody has some faults and that, surprisingly enough, i'lcludes you and me.

2) Look twice and then count to ten when anybody offers you something free.

3) Use your mind in analyzing public affairs rather than swallowing hook, line and sinker the published state­ ments of some prominent person.

4) Check and double check your figures and those of other people as well. Two plus two equals four -- not three or five.

5) You are always right when you are kind to another person.

6) You are always right when you are courteous.

7) Ask questions before you sound off.

8) Believe nothing you hear only half of what you see -- if it's something bad about somebody else.

9) The good old days are not what they used to be -- and never were. Op­ timism will help you keep on the right track, and going places.

10) Nobody yet has found a satisfac­ tory substitute for hard work -- which is a big part of being right.

11) Problems and troubles are en­ vitable, but you'll be right if you remain confident that you can find a good solution.

*** Vinobraní Each year our calendar of events will list several of our units holding a dance in the fall called "Vinobranl." If you are new to Sokol this little bit of history from Sokol Baltimore's newsletter may satisfy your curiosity.

Vinobraní literally translated means Grape Harvest Dance. Bohemia's rich soil and mild climate were wéll suited for the cultivafion of grapes. A local wine industry developed. Near the end of the growing season, the farmers would contract with the vintner to sell their grapes. After an agreement was concluded, the grapes became the property of the winemaker (even though the grapes were still on the vine).

Soon it became mischievous sport for the fonner owners of the grapes to sneak out into the fields and remove portions of the crop from the vine. The new owners of the grapes had to keep watch over their investment, so they employed constables to police the vineyards. The towns' people did everything they could to outwit the policemen and escape with bunches of grapes. Every year this routine was repeated and before long it became a tradition.

Vinobraní is a celebration of this event. At Vinobraní Evening, the grapes and apples you see hanging above will become the property of the winemaker. The policemen . will begin patrol of his property. All of you are encouraged to join in, the sport of stealing the grapes. Some will be suc­ cessful while others will be arrested by one of the policemen and taken to the judge's decision will be enjoyed by all.
