This December (to date) has really been a time spent among fraternal members and acquaintances at Christmas parties and lodge functions for your editor; Sunday, December 2 at Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West with pleasant and indeed very successful yuletide festivities combined with fraternizing, youth program exhibited

by Sokol West, Santa's visit, a deli­ cious traditional meal, plus many valu­ able prizes given to the lucky attendees; on the same day Lodge Moravsti Bratri (Moravian Brothers) No. 6, Cottonwood also had their Christmas meeting, program and party which we were unable to attend due to conflicting dates; Saturday, December 8 at Lodge Slovanska Lipa (Slavonic Linden) No. 66, Waco located in Elm Mott (where most officers are ladies) held an entertaining event composed of youth program, a party and more socializing; Sunday, December 9 at Lodge Nove Kvety (New Blossoms) No. 35 at Elk for installation of of­ ficers and Christmas social. Their youth leader had a "special" Texas style Christmas program where Santa was dressed in red, cowboy hat, boots, spurs and all the elves including Santa's helpers were also dressed in Texas style (red) attire which was quaint and entertaining. (Unfortunate­ ly, the picture didn't develop for processing.) Regrettably, we were un­ able to attend the four-lodge Christmas party hosted by Lodge Cechoslovanu No. 92, Fort Worth held on the same date, December 9th. However, we ap­ preciate being remembered and also our appreciation is extended to the other lodges for their invitations, which we were unable to fulfill. Keep up the good work and we salute you for staying active in your lodges and keeping your reporters informed of your lodges' affairs through the Vestnik media. Best wishes for a fruit­ ful and healthy new year!

the coming year be as short-lived as your New Year's resolutions. Below is a recipe for a Happy New Year. Read it occasionally, read it often enough to know it by memory before long.

Take twelve fine, full-grown months, and see that they are thoroughly clean from old memories of bitterness, resentment, grudge, hate, and jealousy;

wash and cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off the specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the dirt of the past. Have them as fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time.

Cut these twelve months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. This batch will keep for just one year. Do not at­ tempt to make up the whole batch at one time. So many people make the mistake to make up more of it at one mixing, but they spoil the entire lot in this way. Prepare only enough to last you one day at a time, by mixing it as follows: Try to put into each day twelve parts of faith, eleven parts of patience, ten parts of courage, nine parts of work (some people leave out this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), eight parts of hope, seven parts of fidelity, six parts of liberality, five parts of kindness, four of rest, three of devotion, two of meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and cupful of good humor.

Then pour into the entire mixture enough love to suit your taste, and mix with energy, vim and vigor. Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat. Garnish it with a few freshly-gathered smiles.

It should be served with unselfishness and cheerfulness. If this recipe is fol­ lowed as directed, the Happy New Year dish will remain appetizing and delicious any time you reach for it.

A New Year's Resolution should be made for one day only. This is the natural límít of man's spiritual for­ titude. And each morning for as long as possible, the resolution should be repeated, but again for one day only. A resolution that stretches out for a whole year is intolerably hard to keep.

But one that begins each morning and ends at night is both simple and practi­ cal. It asks no more of us than we can do. It makes each day the measure of our responsibility, endurance and growth.

As we review the past we recall the many blessings which we received in our fraternal work; we view the future, unlimited opportunity unflolds beforeus in our Society.

The Crew Hits The Big Time!

If you have seen past issues of the Vestnik, you probably are familiar with State Field Manager Gene Mc­ Bride and the SPJST Willow Flat Crew barbecue cook-off team. Their recent successes in Central Texas cook-offs has been reported on these pages in the past few months.

But if you asked Gene about any of those triumphs, he'd tell you that they pale in comparison to their latest bar­ becue cook-off accomplishment.

At a recent barbecue cook-off held in Temple, the team came away second in chili, second in chicken, third in pork and first overall! Not only did they win the beautiful large trophies, but they also won cash awards totalling $1,500.001 This is by far the greatest victory achieved by the crew.

Among the many competitors were sales representatives from his own dis­ trict; one was heard to say: "He should be barbecuing instead of telling us how to sell insurance!" Of course, that was after the winners were announced.

Gene said he will be happy to keep on doing both. Everyone at SPJST is glad to hear that, even though the competi­ tion may wish otherwise.

The members enjoyed a time of fel­ lowship before the meeting. Al Kutac playing the accordian and Frankie Vanek on trumpet kept the members in the Christmas spirit.

Members thoroughly enjoyed the music and singing along with Christmas carols and Czech songs.

A catered dinner was served after the meeting to eighty (80) members.

President Harold Rohde convened the meeting with the Pledge of Al­ legiance and a moment of silence held for departed members.

Financial Secretary Linda Liles read the minutes of our last meeting in ab­ sence of Secretary Glen Lathan who was in the hospital. The minutes were approved as read.

A big round of applause was given to all those who helped in making our ChristmasParty a great success.

New members accepted were Linda, Sara and Courtney Wagner, and Karen and Kristen Bartek.

Newly-elected officers will be installed at our January meeting.

Door prize winners were Jeanette Wold, Gladys Kurtz, Otto Horelica, Jewel Wolf and Eddie Dantzler.

Lodge No. 81, Needville Fifty-seven members and guests met Sunday, December 16, 1990 at the lodge ball in Needville for the final meeting of the year. Highlights of the meeting were the installation of of­ ficers for 1991 and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

At 12:00 noon we enjoyed a bounti­ ful Christmas dinner of turkey, dress­ ing, ham, and all the trimmings. The turkey was baked by Louise Newman, the dressing by Willie Mae Kuyken­ dall and the ham by Benita Walzel. A variety of tasty vegetables, salads and desserts completed our menu. Our thanks to all the sisters of the lodge who prepared and brought the food.

The business meeting was called to order by President Adolph Macha.

Natalie Warhol led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed Brother Jerome Neuman. We extend our sympathy to his family.

All officers were present for roll call.

President Macha introduced and wel­ comed our visitors--Mr. and Mrs. Mil­ ton Vyvial, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kubala, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Kruger, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Havelka, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Stámmann and their little son whose birthday incidently falls on Christmas Day. We were also happy to- have our District V director, "Brother Louis Hanus, with us. Besides bringing us news from the Head Office, we can al­ ways count on Brother Hanus for some "bumerousinformation."

Secretary Mary Werner read the minutes of the November meeting which were approved. A note of thanks was read from the family of Louise Lubojacky and a letter of thanks from Mr. Harvey Marx, administrator of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Need­ ville was read, thanking the lodge for the apples and oranges delivered to the residents.

Sister Mary Werner personally thanked the members for the cards, prayers and flowers sent to her during her recent illness. We were all happy to have Mary with us, considering that she had major surgery between the November and December meetings and has kept up with all her lodge . duties while recovering.

Other officers' reports read and ap­ proved were the financial secretary's report by Mary Werner, the treasurer's report by Willie Mae Kuykendall and the Special Fund report by Chairman Gilbert Walzel.

On our sick list, we send our special prayers and best wishes to five-year­ old Rex Allen Taylor who is hospital­ ized in Galveston. Our best wishes also to Mary Werner for continued good health.

A conflict in our meeting date for March 1991 was resolved by changing that meeting to the second Sunday in March. Please open your new 1991 calendars to the month of March and circle Sunday, March 10, 1991 as that month's meeting date. This is a one time only change. All other 1991 meet­ ings will be on the third Sunday of each month.

Ten new members were accepted into Lodge No. 81. We welcome Kelly Winkenwerder, David Duane Cline, Hannah Marie Cline, Lee Ann Kalina, Heather Renee Kalina, Tracey Robert Matula, Casey Russell Matula, Wesley Ryan Matula, Melody Mara Davis and Kelly Ann Davis.

We have made good progress on our inventory of sickroom and convales­ cent items to be loaned free of charge to members of Lodge No. 81 as needed. President Macha read a list of items now on hand: one hospital bed complete with mattress and railing, one patient lift and one restrainer vest, two metal wheelchairs, one vinyl upholstered wheelchair with tray table, one lap robe, two walkers and two bedside commodes. After the meeting adjourned, the group gathered around the Christmas tree to sing some seasonal songs. Our singing was soon interrupted by a loud knock at the side door. It was Santa coming to visit with everyone and hand out bags of Christmas goodies.

He even brought a little welcome rain with him. Our thanks to committee members: Delores Macha, Winnie Susan, and Benita Walzel for decorating the tree and making the preparations for Santa's visit.

Newman won a trophy for a fire prevention poster from the Needville Fire Department. Cory Walzel is a member of DARE (Drug Abuse Resis­ tance Education). This new program is directed to fifth grade students to let them feel good about themselves without using drugs. Bradley Vallet is active in the Needville High School Actors' Guild, recently participating in the production "Soft Soap." . L d N 106 O ge O.. , La Grange Annual Meeting Report Lodge No. 106, La Grange held its final meeting of the year on Sunday, December 9, 1990 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fayette County Savings and Loan Company Fellowship Room, with President Clarence Matula presidíng.

All officers, various other members, one member of another lodge, Mr. Leon Sefcik, were present as well as District I Director Andrew Vavra who contributed various helpful information and suggestions to our meeting.

After recitation of the Pledge of Al­ legiance and observation of a minute of silent meditation, the following items of business were conducted: Reading of minutes, report of the Auditing Committee for the accounts of the secretary-treasurer, a decision to discontinue dues, a view of our finan­ cial balance, discussion of different kinds of SPJST policies, discussion of the statewide project to raise money for an endowment of a Czech Chair at the Texas A&M University similar to the one at the University of Texas at Austin, discussion of SPJST college scholarship fund and its advantages to college-bound members and to the SPJST organization, discussion of the need to support these endeavors, a decision to let the State Office conduct direct billing of our policyholders, a decision to leave the stipend to our secretary-treasurer as before, presenta­ tion by Mr. Vavra of a plaque to Mr. Henry Schovajsa (in absentia) for his long years of faithful service to our lodge, a decision to re-elect, by ac­ clamation, all the existing officers for another year and tentatively, set March 17, 1991 as the date of the next meet­ ing.

Lodge No. 133, San Antonio The members of Lodge 133, San An­ tonio met on December 16th for their annual dinner and Christmas Party.

The chief cooks, Brothers Joe Spacek, Emil Matula and Louis Jasek were complimented on the delicious ham dinner served. Thanks also go to Sisters Viola Spacek, Evelyn Matula, Lucille Dlugosh and Alma Trilicek who assisted the cooks and served the meal.

After lunch, Brother Anthony Trilicek welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced our guest for the afternoon, District VII Director Thelma Hrncir. There were fifty mem­ bers and eight guests present.

Correspondencewas read from Sister Marcella Kleprlík, who wrote to thank all the members for their good wishes and prayers. Correspondence was also read from Sister Thelma Hrncir and Brother Howard Leshikar. Another let­ ter- was read from Brother Jerry Mikulas in regard to delegates to the 1991 Convention.

Brother Trilicek mentioned some problems encountered by the Czech

Reporter Miloslava Phelps with the publication of her Czech article. It was suggested that an inquiry be made through the District VII Publication Representative Betty Jurica. The secretary was directed to do this.

Members celebrating their anniver­ saries in December were Otto and Jane Hurta who were celebrating their 5 lst anniversary and Kathy and Richard Uribe who were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary.

The Membership Committee consist­ ing of Sister Grace Rohan and Alma Trilicek, and Brother Emil Matula ap­ proved the application of Kayla Lynn Mazac, five months old. She is the great-granddaughter of Viola Mazac Kurtz, and the daughter of Eddie and Ronda Mazac. Her father is a member of Lodge 133.

Brother Bill Pavliska extended greet­ ings from the Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Klinkovsky. Dates for the Tarok Tournament and "42" Tournament were given. Brother Schimcek reported that Lte and his wife, Frances, had entered an Open Tournament in Taroky to be held in Seaton.

Sister Thelma Hmcir spoke briefly to the members. She reaffirmed the stability of SPJST and urged members to make investments with SPJST. She outlined the guidelines for annuities held by members. She also announced that the Officers' Workshop would be held February 23, 1991.

Brother Emil Matula extended thanks to Sister Frankie Campbell for her dedicated service to the youth club.

Thanks was also extended . to Kathy Uribe who helped with the Christmas Youth Project. Assistant Youth Leader Cheryl Morrissey was unable to attend the meeting.

Czech Language Class At Alief Alief Evening School under auspices of Alief Independent School District is again offering a Conversational Czech course in the beginning of February '91 at Hastings High School. A shuttered store, saloon, post office, a two-story stone gristmill, a boarded-up fraternal lodge hall and an infrequently used Catholic church with its nearby cemetery mark the ghost town of Dubina.

Czech immigrants began settling in the area along Navidad Creek in late 1856. They named their community "Dubina" which means "oak grove." In the beginning, they lived in crude thatched huts and lean-tos. In 1858,

Joseph Peter, Sr. built a log house in which Roman Catholic services were conducted until 1877, when the first church was built. The parish soon counted more than 600 families, in­ cluding many from nearby Weimar, where no church had yet been erected.

By 1900, Dubina was a thriving com­ munity with a cotton gin, a mill, a general store and saloon, a blacksmith shop, a church and a school. In 1909 a tropical storm destroyed the church and, in 1912, a fire devastated the cot­ ton gin, gristmill, blacksmith and general store. Most of the town was later rebuilt, but the old volume of business was never regained. The com­ ing of the automobile and the develop­ ment of better roads meant the end of many small towns.
