Czech Chair Donations This is the final report for the donors to the Czech Chair Fund for the year 1990. These are funds 'that were received at the SPJST Supreme Lodge.

A check in the amount of $1,385.00 was mailed to the CEFT Treasurer.

Supreme Lodge Sponsors Scholarship Fund Drive November 10-December 25, 1990 The Supreme Lodge SPJST is sponsoring a Scholarship Fund Drive starting November 10 through December 25, 1990.

THE SPJST SOCIETY IS OFFERING A HELP FOR ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION TO ITS MEMBERS, THROUGH A TEXAS STATE TECHNI­ CAL INSTITUTE (TSTI) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

The funds received will be used to help members of our Society achieve a higher education. The purpose is to create funds in addition to existing funds; provide more scholarships annually, and to make members aware of the scholarships provided by our Society to our members.

THE TSTI SCHOLARSHIP CAN HELP MEMBERS WHO WISH TO FUR­ THER THEIR CAREERS THROUGH ENHANCED EDUCATION, OR FOR GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ENTER A TECHNICAL OR VOCATIONAL FIELD.

The scholarships provided by this drive will be awarded in accordance with the same procedure and criteria of the SPJST scholarship programs.

Sister Krizan was a very active mem­ ber of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cotton­ wood and we are proud she is able to celebrate the fact she outlived her SPJST life insurance policy.

In addition to her family, there are ten grandchildren one of whom, There­ sa Dobecka preceded her in death in 1982 and two others in infancy. There also eight great-grandchildren.

The Supreme Lodge and Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood extends best wishes for many years of good health.

The soldier, pioneer and Indian costumes worn by the participants in staging a re-enactment of Old Fort Concho with wagons, buggies, horses, mules and hacks made a proper setting for the articles and quilts from the SPJST Museum in the Czech Christmas House; there the aroma of homemade chicken soup, sausage and kolaches helped us enjoy "the good old days."

Katerina Krizan Celebrates 96th Birthday Sister Katerina Krizan celebrated her 96th birthday on November 23, 1990 at West Rest Haven in West, Texas.

Katie, as everyone knows her, celebrated with the rest of the Novem­ ber celebrants on November 7th at the West Rest Haven with a large birthday cake.

Sister Krizan was born to Tom and Katerina (Novotny) Vochoska on November 23, 1894 in Chlumetc, Czechoslovakia. She was one of four children, two namely, Adolph and Mary who were also born in Chlumetc and another brother, Raymond was born in USA. She attended school in Czechos­ lovakia to the age of 11 when her par­ nets and the three youngsters set out for America. They landed in Galves-

ton, Texas in 1906 and moved to the West community where some of the Novotnys were living.

Katie attended more school here until she met and married John Krizan on November 19, 1912.·fo the Cotton­ wood community, they started their married life in farming. They pur­ chased the farm and built their home in this vicinity.

To this union, there were three daughters born, namely, Esther Malina, Adelle Royal and Lydia Dobecka.

Brother' John Krizan died at a young age on June 27, 1932. Sister Krizan remained living on the farm with her family and proceeded in farming until 1950 when her daughter and son-in­ law, Robert and Lydia Dobecka, took

QUILT MADE IN 1920-1935 by Mrs. Joe (Theresa) Sefcik (Editor Sefcik's mother) displayed at Fort Concho also created much interest and admira­ tion.

With no further business, we went on to the door prizes. The day's door prize winner was Lydia Dobecka. The progressive prizes were next; first $10 winner was Mary Marek. (We usually draw names from the monthly lodge pot until we have a winner for the first $10 prize at our last monthly meeting of the year in December.) The other progressive prize for $10 winner was Betty Jean (Pavlas) Oriler; the third prize for $1 was Kathleen Dudik and the last two members weren't present.

The other fun-drawing door prizes (brought by some members as gifts), the winners were Karen Kroll from Cyrill and Christine Svrcek, to Lynette Gerik from Bill and Georgia Skerik, Eddie Hrabal from Willie Mae Schuetz, James Gerik from Robert and Lydia Dobecka, Peggy Dobecka from the youth club.

Our attendance at this party was good and thanks for coming and do come again when you can. The turkey supper was served at 5 p.m. and fol. lowing the meal, a short program by the youth was held and their last song was "Here Comes Santa Claus" and there he came, and the screams filled the ball. Santa came in and started giving out the bags of goodies to all the youth who were present and also the adults received bags. After all of this, the many, many gifts under the tree were passed out to all who's name was called and, believe me, there were lots of exchanging of gifts for young and old.

There were several winners from the youth club who were selling tickets on their Christmas items as their project. I think everyone was happy going home because it all turned out to be a suc­ cessful party.

In other news, that I would like to write about was a special birthday party held on November 22 at West Rest Haven for Sister (Aunt) Katie Krizan who became 96 years of age and received a fully-endowed SPJST certificate. District III Director Sid

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Members and Readers: This was our last meeting of the year, so it's so long to 1990; as al­ ways, our last meeting of the year was a very busy one.

It started off by President Johnnie Krizan calling on Tammi Dobecka to say the pledge to the flag and reading the SPJST Youth Club Pledge and all remained standing.

The minutes were read from our last meeting by Barbara Hykel. Treasurer's report was by Karen Kroll and Finan­ cial Secretary George Straten gave his report. All reports were accepted as given.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz read her "doings" of all they did since the last meeting. She also had a letter in the Leader's News recently. Now, they are working on Christmas items to bring and give each resident at the West Rest Haven.

At this time, the president recognized all the cooks who prepared the meal for our supper; it was baked turkeys and that good "ole" dressing with many different side dishes and plenty of good tasting Czech sweets brought by members. George and Josie Mae Straten baked the turkeys. A big thank you to all who helped decorate our hall. It looks beautiful; even the presi­ dent liked it who couldn't help.

At this time, the president also reported Brother Cyrill and Christine Svrcek donated money to the Therese Dobecka Scholarship Fund which was presented to Shirley Brem at our last meeting. Thanks to the Dobecka fami­ ly!

Next, the president called on Brother Svrcek to come to the table to conduct the election of officers. The voting was held individually. Those elected were: President=Johnaíe Krizan Vice President=Robert Dobecka Secretary=Barbara Hykel Financial Secretary--George Straten Treasurer--Peggy Dobecka Reporter--Edward Hykel Youth Leader--Willie Mae Schuetz Assistant YL--Peggy Dobecka Flag Bearer--Lydia Dobecka The officers expressed their thanks to the membership for voting for them and all said they would serve the best they know how; after all of this, the president thanked Cyrill Svrcek.

Others who attended this ceremony were her daughters, Lydia and her husband, Robert Dobecka, Es­ ther and her husband, Fred Malina, and Adele Royal; also Aunt Katie's great­ granddaughter, Celia Dobecka; Lodge 6 President Johnnie Krizan and Reporter Ruth Krizan. .

Sister Katie Krizan became a mem­ ber of Lodge No. 6 on October 1 O, 1915 and has been a member for over 75 years. All the members of Lodge No. 6 are very proud of her; she was always very active at our lodge in the years past and would always bring food for our activities which were held at our lodge. Congratulations, once again, to Sister Katie Krizan on her 96th birthday and wishing her many more. · This is my last letter ~s a reporter and Twonld like to say "so long" to all the members from other lodges who I met during my years as a writer; they told me they read my reports and en­ joyed reading my letters in the Vestnik. I was glad to hear that. I didn't realize people I didn't know and they didn't know me who cared to read my writing. I hope we meet, again, some day somewhere. With this thought: I wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Good Year. I will always remember you and think of you.

At this time, I would like to remind the members from our lodge about our next' board of trustees meeting which will be held January 4, 1991 at 7:30 p.m. and our monthly Lodge 6 meeting will be January 6 at 1 p.m. A meal will be served before the meeting prepared

Post Scriptum: Studies of Czech and classes of the same are vitally impor­ tant in perpetuation of our heritage as they bring forth the increased aware­ ness of all involved Czech-Americans.

Czech, the third langauge of Texas (after English and Spanish), belongs to the Slavonic languages which form the largest language group in Europe; its knowledge thus is a halfway step to learn the related Slavic tongues. As the Old Country is now free, the knowledge of Czech will be especially useful to many thousands of visitors to our ancestral land.

My report of the November meeting was sent two days after the meeting, evidently it was lost in the mail.

Our December meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky.

Bessie Reames led us to the pledge to the flag and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Alford Zapalac, brother-in-law of Bessie and Wanda Petr.

President Podhrasky welcomed the members and guests. We had guests from Czechoslovakia, namely, Anna Hoffman, Jarka Drahonovska, Jarka Bonzetova and Marie Fidlerova. We also had our husbands as gues~s and we want to thank them for helping us with the clean-up.

Every Tuesday morning, Eula Ganske from New Gulf comes to have Bible Study. Sorry to hear Eula is sick and will not be coming for awhile. In the afternoon, Lorene Novosad, Lydia Hortman, Vlasta Nowotny, Ida Gasch and Anna Stavinoha come to play so­ cial games with our residents. The KCs donated the prizes.

The Damon ladies, Catholic ladies, Immanuel ladies and the Presbyterian ladies comes on Thursday afternoons to have crafts.

Every Friday afternoon, Melva Hast­ ings, Freda Klawitter and Lydia Hortman come to roll hair.

Every Sunday morning, Annie Stavinoha and Rosie Kovar come to have rosary. The KCs come to give Communion.

Wednesday afternoon, November 7, the 6th graders of St. Michael's Church came to visit the residents.

Monday afternoon, November 12, the Hope Lutheran Church Women and Rev. Jensen from Beasley came to have services and brought cookies and had a social afterwards.

Tuesday afte?toon, November ~3 and 27, Elton T~elke came to enter!atn with the accordian and sang old-time songs with the residents.

Thursday morning, November. 15, Gladys Hix, Louis Smith, James Little, Edmund Brandl and Martha Marx w~nt riding to Rosenberg and surrounding , area. In the afternoon, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinet with the Fort Bend Humane Society brought dogs for therapy.

On November 16, the home had a bake sale for the residents' Activity Fund. Thanks, again, to those who so generously gave their tím~ and goodies .. It certainly was appreciated.

Volunteers Ida Gasch, Lydia Hortman and Melvia Hastings helped serve cake, ice. cream, punch and coffee to all.

The residents enjoyed all the ac­ tivities during the month of November.

SPJST State King And Queen Participate In Temple Christmas Parade

Congratulations to the winners and participants of the 1990 Christmas Or­ nament Contest. This year's ornament theme was "PIONEER DAYS." The youth came up with a variety of excit­ ing and new ideas to carry out the theme.

The ornaments will be displayed in the SPJST Museum during the Christmas Holidays. I want to en­ courage each of you to come and view the Youth Christmas Tree on Decem­ ber 16th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. when we will have the annual Museum Open House.

On Monday, December 3rd, State Queen Leslie Barnes of Lodge 84, Dal­ las and State King Jason Reese of Lodge 47, Seaton braved the cold to participate in Temple's Christmas Parade.

Over 5,000 people viewed the royal couple while they passed along the parade route. Even though it was a bit cold to be riding in a convertible with the top down, the royal couple did an

outstanding job in representing the Society.

Christmas

youth club needed to bring sweets and a $5 gift for a boy or girl.

Under new business, we are collect­ ing toiletry items for the soldiers in Saudi Arabia. We brought some items on December 3rd.

Practice for our Christmas Party was held December 3rd. We also filled candy sacks for the December 8 Christmas Party.

On December 6, we rode in the BeJlmead Christmas Parade. We had a Nativity scene.

On December 9, we went to the Moody Rest Home and decorated a door for Christmas. We met at 2 p.m.

We also performed our Christmas play for the Moody Rest Home on Decem­ ber 16th.

We discussed having our youth club Christmas party on December 19th.

We had a pizza party and exchanged gifts.

We will also have a cake walk on December 29 at our Jerry Haisler's dance.

Smantha, Susan and Sharon Hrabal are the daughters of Edward and Veronica Hrabal. Samantha, Susan and Sharon have one brother, Stephen.

Samantha likes Barbie Dolls, playing with make up and reading. She is in the first grade at West Elementary.

Susan is seven years old and likes to play with Barbie Dolls and read. She .also attends West Elementary.

Sharon is thirteen years old and en­ joys playing basketball, volleyball and track. She attends West Middle School and is a member of the 4-H, Band and Girl Scouts.

Our congratulations to you girls for joining the SPJST Youth Clubs and we are looking forward to seeing you at the District III activities.

We had ten members, eleven adults and one guest, Kevin Dluhos, present.

Secretary Martha Bartos read the minutes from our previous meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Danny Borak then gave the treasurer's report and collected dues.

An award of recognition was awarded to Martha Bartos and Kim Kacal for placing first place winners in the Christmas Ornament Contest which was judged at the District VI meeting at Sweet Home in October, for our age category groups.

We drew for door prizes. Darrin Dybala and Kim Kacal were our birthday celebrants for the month.

For our December project, we made Christmas scenes and brought them to the meeting. We brought Christmas gifts to be given to the Jaycees to give to the needy children as a charity project at Christmas.

We had our Christmas Party. We ex­ changed gifts and had a catered meal and then socialized together. We per­ formed at the SPJST Christmas Party on December 9th.

Our next meeting will be January 3, 1991 at Gold Room at Commercial Bank.

The December 7, 1990 meeting of the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club was held at 8 p.m. in the SPJST Hall in Hillje. The meeting was preceded by a social and Christmas dinner for all of our members and their families.

Members planned to attend the El Campo High School's Fall Production of "Pegora the Witch" on Saturday, December 15 at 10 a.m. Three of our members were in the play.

Members were also encouraged to at­ tend the Open House in Temple on December 16 from 2 to.č p.m.

Entry forms for the T-Shirt Design Contest were handed out, and everyone was encouraged to enter. The Samantha theme is "Save the Earth" and the deadline is January 3 lst.

Our charity project for the month was to collect toys to be given to the Jaycees' "Toys for Tots" program.

During the Christmas season, they help families who are less fortunate.

Members brought pictures showing holiday scenes as the monthly project.

For the next meeting, we will make New Year's Eve hats.

The meeting was adjourned. Door prizes were given. After the meeting, the youth enjoyed exchanging gifts as well as Christmas wishes. We also practiced for the Lodge 40 Christmas Party.

Povstáním jsme vzdali čest našim vlajkám; nosiči vlajek byli James Kor­ tis a Amy Kohutek.

Návštěvujsme měli Gertrude Kahlig, Della Marinek, Freddy Schroeder a Tammy Pechal.

Nemocné členy jsme neměli žádné.

Všichniúředníci byli přítomní jenom místo-předseda Wallace Jez. Sestra Dolores Škrabánek přečetla protokol a byl přijat tak, jak byl napsán.

Nové členy jsme přijali---Tom Merka III, Dorothy a Vernon Engleholm, Theresa Zavodný a Michael Psenčík. Úředníci a výbory podaly dobré zprávy.

Sestra Patsy Kostovský, vedoucí mládeže, podala dobrou zprávu.

Mladež měla vánoční program ve 3 hodiny 9. prosince, když bylo vánoční party pro členy.

Měli jsme také volby to co se nedodělalo v minulé schůzi, tito byli zvoleni: Výčepní (bar) -- Henry a Helen Janáček.

Na úklid a čistěni v síni jsou Gene a Ann Hejl.

Na prodávání lístků je Ruth Kohutek.

Na zábavní výborů je Louis Kohutek. Česká dopisovatelka je Emily Stuteville.

Anglická dopisovatelka je Katherine Smith.

Na revizni výborů jsou Frank Klinkovskýa James Škrabánek.

Narozeniny budou slavit Dorothy Pechal, Bennie Mikeska, Claudette Reese, Harry Gerbach, John Klecka a Dorothy Klecka.

Jednotlivú členové také přispěli na českou nadaci a jejich jména budou uveřejňena ve Věstníku. v Bylo navrhnuto aby jsme neposílali upomínky členům platit společenské poplatky, když už dostali 3 upomínky a bylo to schváleno všemi přítomnými členy.

Předsedkyně volebního výboru Milé sestry a bratři: Naše listopadová schůze, která se Viola Kurtzová navrhla, aby jsme při­ konala v neděli 18. začala ve 2 hodiny jali všechny zvolené úředníky na příští odpoledne. President řádu bratr An­ rok a bylo to schváleno všemi členy.

V prosinci budeme mít společný oběd, pečenou šunku se vším ostatním, které obstaráji bratr Emil Matula a Josef Špaček a sestrypřinesou zákusky a cukrovinky. Sestra Annie Stryk připraví nadílku pro děti a ozdobí náš vánoční stromek. Také Mikuláš tam přijde.

Po ukončení schůze jsme měli dobrou svačinu obkládané chlebíčky s hovězí rostěnou (sandwiches), kterou připravili bratr a sestra Špačkovi a všechny sladkosti které přinesly naše sestry. Následovaly hry a společná zábava.

Naše příští schůze se bude konat v neděli 16. prosince; oběd bude podáván ve 12 hodin 30 minut.

Dostavte se v hojném počtu a pomozte nám oslavovat Vánoce, narozeniny našeho Spasitele a proto je to největší svátek celého roku.

Aliefská večerní škola zahájí ve středu, šestého února 91, již 25. semester hovorové češtiny. Toto vyučování bude 12 týdnů, vždy ve středu, od 6:30 do 9.00 večer v budově High School Hastings North. Tato škola se nachází mezi bulvárem Bellairena jihu a ulicí Alief-Clodinena severu, na jihozápadní straně křižovatky ulic Cook Rd. a High Star Dr. v samostatném školím okresu osady Alief v jihozápadní části velkoměsta Houstonu. Inserovaný kurs češtinybude opět zaměřen na jed­ noduchou konversaci se základy mluv­ nice k rozšíření hovorových možností všude kde je zde v Texasu i kdekoliv jinde česká řeč používána.
